2023 / 41
Aperçu of the Week:
"They say in the Middle East: a pessimist is simply an optimist with experience."
(Ehud Barak, former General and Prime Minister of the State of Israel)
Bad News of the Week:
It was always such a thing when a new country was "discovered." Because that always applied only to the usually white seafarer from Europe, because - surprise! - there were, after all, in 99% of the cases already inhabitants on the spot. And in many of these places, unfortunately, the First Nations are still second-class citizens. For example in Australia. But that was about to change. At least that was the plan of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Unfortunately, he was not the only one to be bitterly disappointed. His idea was to give Australia's indigenous people more political influence with a constitutional amendment. They were to be heard only on matters that directly affect them ("voice to parliament"). Only heard - because everything would still be decided in the almost purely white parliament. So, if you want to see it that way, rather a symbolic gesture of respect. And yet a clear majority voted against the project in the corresponding referendum.
"For Prime Minister Albanese it is a heavy defeat," write the newspapers. What then is it for the Aborigines? Indigenous Australians are considered the oldest surviving culture in the world and have populated the continent for more than 60,000 years. They were there first. And yet only come last. Sad.
Good News of the Week:
Germany has a long checkered history with Poland. With dark and light chapters. One would like to speak of a community of fate. First the fall of the Iron Curtain, then accession to the European Union, all will be well. But then strange developments began in our neighbor to the east. Which can be associated with one name: Kaczynski.
The two brothers Lech and Jaroslaw with their PiS party (Prawo i Sprawiedliwosc / Law and Justice) have had a decisive influence on Poland's last 20 years. With their programmatic emphasis on nationalism, EU skepticism, social conservatism, right-wing populism, etc., they were a reliable partner of Hungary's omnipotent Viktor Orban and a declared opponent of Brussels and Berlin. This is also how they campaigned: they did not want to be told anything more from the European Union and especially (by name!) from Germany. A ridiculous distortion of reality. Or a bad joke.
Facing them in the election this Sunday were several opposition parties. And increasingly critical voters, who in some places took to the streets in their hundreds of thousands to take a stand for the independence of the judiciary, for example. Their figurehead, Donald Tusk, can in many ways be seen as the antipode of the Kaczynskis. Among other things, he is an avowed pro-European. Of course, after all, he served for five years as president of the European Council and another three as chairman of the European People's Party.
Tusk is now the real winner. Even if he only came in second place with his Platforma Obywatelska (Civic Platform) party. This is because, unlike the PiS, which is still the strongest party but suffered significant losses, he has the realistic prospect of being able to form a solid parliamentary majority with programmatically compatible coalition partners. "This is an epochal event, comparable to Joe Biden's victory over Donald Trump," writes the news magazine Der Spiegel. Good prospects for Poland. For its neighbor Germany. And for all of Europe.
Personal happy moment of the week:
My son is going to do more sports. And I don't mean esports. But basketball. In the coming week he will do his first workouts. With physical movement. And sweat. I also like the fact that he has already ridden his bike to school 90% of the time this school year, rather than taking the bus. Even if, I suspect, the main reason is that he doesn't have to get up until fifteen minutes later. Anyway, physical exercise is important for a 15-year-old. So I try to pay attention to that. Let's go!
PS: Now he has already been to basketball training for two hours for the first time. And seems to like it. And I like it too.
I couldn't care less...
...that families can now get a low-interest loan from the government to buy a house. For most of us (and especially in the Munich area) it is utopian to be able to afford home ownership either way.
As I write this...
...I am waiting for the new album of The Rolling Stones. For 18 years the probably longest active rock'n'rollers of all times haven't released any new songs. But next Friday the time has come: "Hackney Diamonds" will be released. I'm curious.
Post Scriptum
In the times of the Gaza war, you have to weigh your words carefully. Unlike the Ukraine war, there is no clear assignment of perpetrator and victim roles of two states here. Rather, the line must be drawn here between rulers who act irresponsibly and peoples who endure the consequences of their actions. Have to endure, there is no choice.
On the one hand, there are the terrorists of Hamas (not the Palestinians!), who, ideologically blinded, are causing inconceivable carnage among innocent civilians. On the other hand, there is an increasingly right-wing radical regime in the Knesset that denies the Palestinian people their right to exist and their territorial integrity (keyword: settlement policy in the West Bank). In between are two peoples who are experiencing unbelievable suffering.
Rarely do the EU and China agree, but their joint appeal for a two-state solution will once again go unheard. In this conflict, I cannot take sides with either side. I simply wish that the killing would stop. And that the rulers on both sides can agree on a sustainable peace in the interest of their peoples. But my hope will probably prove to be quite naive once again...

i would like to hear more about nerve’s original squadron! maybe a drabble or headcanons? 👀👀
YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO REQUEST THIS
NERVE X THEIR PAST SQUADRON - DRABBLE / HEADCANONS
After they joined, they were quickly deployed to America, back to their home country, and placed with a squadron.
A ‘squadron’ is a term for two or more flights (units) bunched together in one sort of team. In Nerve’s case, it was 2.
Their squadron was called The 176th Attack Squadron, but everyone had already agreed that was a stupid name, so they called themselves the Dovehawks. One flight was the Doves, and the others were the Hawks. Since both flights already had 14 people, Nerve sort of just.. existed in between. They were in both flights— mainly Hawk— but they were an authentic Dovehawk.
They flew A-10 Thunderbolt IIs. Nerve was upset about having to leave their Lassie behind after being deployed.
Nerve was considerably livelier and talkative with their original flight than they are now. They don’t think they’ll ever be like that again (unless i were to pull a few goofy strings)
Their flight members were actually very kind. It consisted of the following: (👽 means Nerve lost contact with them, ☠️ means KIA, and ❓ means genuinely MIA)
Fracture (👽) (37 Y/O American male, full name John Frazier) 🦅
Bearhug (👽) (34 Y/O Australian female, full name Lizzy Carlson) 🦅
Turtledove (☠️) (19 Y/O Dutch male, full name Cassidy Longlegs) 🦅
South (👽) (43 Y/O American male, full name Altan Kose) 🦅
Laylow (👽) (26 Y/O Lativan female, full name Agnese Kalnina) 🦅
Terrier (☠️) (30 Y/O Australian male, full name Joseph Klitzman) 🦅
Two Teeth (☠️) (56 Y/O United Kingdom male, full name William Sanders) 🦅
Softspot (👽) (28 Y/O American female, full name Hannah Sanders) 🦅
Boxcutter (👽) (18 Y/O American female, full name Hailey de Guzman) (AKA: Nerve’s best friend) 🦅
Kamikaze (❓) (24 Y/O Australian male, full name Alexander Tenorman) 🦅
Gimoteo (❓) (27 Y/O Australian male, full name Derek Tenorman) 🦅
Tiny (☠️) (42 Y/O American female, full name Vanessa Madden) 🦅
Pork (👽) (50 Y/O Australian male, full name Cosmo Barlowe) 🦅
Crow (☠️) (21 Y/O German female, full name Anna Fischer) 🦅
Nerve (❓) (16 Y/O American, first name Arkady (Аркадий), last name undetermined.) 🦅(🕊️?)
Baywatch (❓) (45 Y/O Polish male, first name undetermined but last name Adamski.) 🕊️
Seagull (👽) (30 Y/O United Kingdom male, full name Saul Gull) 🕊️
Kenny (👽) (25 Y/O American male, full name Kenneth Thompson) 🕊️
Bulldog (☠️) (29 Y/O United Kingdom female, full name Amy Deer) 🕊️
Ray (☠️) (40 Y/O American male, full name Raymond Jackson) 🕊️
FuFu (☠️) (26 Y/O American female, full name Bunny Blackburn) 🕊️
Button (❓) (53 Y/O United Kingdom male, full name Seymour Buttefield) 🕊️
Bomber (👽) (20 Y/O Australian male, full name Frank Kaczynski) 🕊️
Nine (👽) (32 Y/O United Kingdom male, full name Daniel Hudson) 🕊️
Screwloose (☠️) (50 Y/O Australian female, full name Mary Walsh) 🕊️
Saline (☠️) (24 Y/O Irish male, full name Fred O’Sullivan) 🕊️
Tombstone (☠️) (60 Y/O Irish male, full name Anthony Walsh) 🕊️
Wren (❓) (18 Y/O United Kingdom female, full name Raina Simon) 🕊️
Ant (❓) (18 Y/O American male, full name Johnny Hodge) 🕊️
(here’s a secret: i haven’t read up on the air force since i was in the 8th grade, making this story. i’m reading all these details on the planes and shit from a paper i found lying in my closet /srs. my memory fails me, as i have no fucking idea what a ‘general chief sergeant’ is, so while i read up on the air force i’ll just say that fracture is the ‘big leader’, baywatch is second in command, etc etc etc, and bearhug, ray, pork, and south are the ‘sergeants’ of the crew. nerve is fracture’s teacher’s pet. boxcutter is nerves best friend. )
“Nerve! There’s something wrong with my jet.”
Their brown eyes glazed down the form of the soldier just in front of the base entrance, attempting to study her facial expression from the goggles blocking her eyes. The flow of sunlight from the outside drenched the soldier and illuminated her gear, but caught her darkened goggles, sending an impossibly bright glint of light Nerve’s way.
Placing a saluted hand upon their forehead, they dragged themselves from their work, their legs threatening to give out as they did. Hauling themselves across the smoothed concrete, placing their hands on their hips as they came to the side of their comrade. They paused, knees slightly bent, studying the back of the plane to discover the issue, before turning to Boxcutter with an eyebrow raised.
“Wait, something’s wrong with your gear.” She pointed a crude finger towards Nerve’s chest, her eyes sliding down their form. Something.. wrong with it? They had double checked it this morning. What could possibly be off?
As their eyes met the tip of her gloved finger, she quickly snapped it upwards, sending Nerve’s chin aloft, head pointed towards the rafters.
“Fucking idiot.”
Nerve hesitated, before pulling down their mesh face mask and exerting all of the force in their molars upon her still-pointed finger.

DeSantis praised Fauci in spring 2020 for ‘really doing a good job’
Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis is attacking former President Donald Trump for "turning the country over to [Dr. Anthony] Fauci in March 2020," but DeSantis was praising the chief public health official at the same time in previously unreported quotes. DeSantis said Fauci was "really, really good and really, really helpful" and "really doing a good job." CNN's Andrew Kaczynski…

Hades had an appointment, but that meant Elliot had to get crafty about where he was going. Sent a faculty e-mail from the coach that the basketball team had to stay late for practice. That should give him enough time, and he had an alert on his phone when Anthony moved away from the house so he didn’t risk that slip up.
Elliot had grown a habit of locking two laptops in different spots that weren’t home. He couldn’t even keep his Ipad safe from Anthony at home. Today it was about business, but Elliot knew it was personal too. Amelia didn’t know the difference between Hades and himself, but she was soon to find out they were the same person.
He never dwelt on the feelings he had when she left home.  Because Elliot didn’t have time to feel things, he only had time to survive other people’s feelings. He kept the meeting spot vague at a posh little cafe where he had met his fake girlfriend a time or two to discuss payment. It’s the only place outside of DeLuca influence that hadn’t ratted him out.
Elliot wasn’t dressed as he normally would be if he were going out in public and wanted to be recognized. Instead he looked like he had fashioned his clothes from either Goodwill or Ted  Kaczynski with no little room for anything inbetween. Dark shades covered his eyes as he caught the familiar face. He copied the walk he normally saw Nick do as he made his way to the table set. The messenger bag with the laptop tapped against his thigh. It took him a moment when he seated himself full across from her, and lowered the dark glasses to give her a better look at his face.
“Amelia, it’s been.. five years has it?”

Notes 1-This was put together on April 15th using information from http://killedbypolice.net. This is a good source because it only takes names from confirmed news sources. 1.1-About half of reported civilian deaths by police officers do not include the race. There are most definitely more that we do not know of. 2-Police are not required to report the people they kill, so we know that there has to be more than this that is not reported. Currently the best government data we have on police killings is from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting but these killings are self-reported by law enforcement and participation in the database is voluntary – only about 750 agencies contribute to it, a fraction of the 17,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States. 3-This passes no judgment on guilt or innocence, just a full list. I am sure some of these names are actual criminals, but the world will never know other than taking the police’s word. Police are not the judge, jury and executioners and these people should be alive to face their crimes or prove their innocence in a court of law. (We have also learned from Walter Scott that police lie on the reports and plant evidence) 3.1-IF they were criminals, does not excuse the police from violating these people’s Fifth Amendment Rights. They were deprived of life without due process of law. Many of these people are shot in the back (which is against the law according to Tennessee v. Garner of 1985) or unarmed (see below). The major problem is we have violent White criminals like Ted Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh, James Eagan Holmes, Jared Lee Loughner, Dylann Storm Roof, Robert Dear, Jason Dalton and other who are all terrorists who collectively killed hundreds of people and were apprehended without being shot. Meanwhile, black people are being shot for non-violent crimes like jaywalking, having a busted taillight and so on. 3.2-Police should be able to deescalate a situation and use non-lethal force. They carry stun guns, billy clubs, etc. and wear bullet proof vests. If they are too afraid or too trigger happy, they should not be on the force. 4-This does not include police brutality cases like Floyd Dent, Martese Johnson or so many more. 5-This not include people like Travon Martin or Jordan Davis, who were killed by “stand your ground” laws by civilians. 6-This also does not include people like Lennon Lacy and Otis Byrd in what looks like lynchings 7-yeah, yeah … not all cops. I am sure they have a hard job, but it does not excuse this list or especially how long it is. There were 127 total police deaths in 2014, including unrelated car accidents, heart attacks and even one 9/11 related illness. It is MUCH more dangerous to be black than a police officer. 8-Yes, there were plenty of white people killed by police. “All lives matter”, BUT black people are 3-4x more likely to be killed by police than whites. In 2014, 47% of black people killed were unarmed when only 16% of white people killed were unarmed. There are deep racial disparities that come from a system of oppression. However, this list is important. Sure Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Freddy Gray get the headlines, but every name needs to be remembered.

La Voûte de LeFevre in #Columbus #Ohio La Voûte de LeFevre is a mashup of ancient stereotomic vault construction with contemporary computation and advanced fabrication. The vault is a compression-only structure calculated through a custom simulation program to determine how large each units opening should be in order to adjust its mass in relation to its neighbors. The project translates past methods of fabrication into contemporary culture. The purpose of this research is not to revert to an ‘antiquated architecture’, but to reengage a problem that may be unfamiliar in contemporary culture. This terrain produces something new, an architecture that is somehow ancient yet contemporary, heavy yet light, familiar yet alien. location: Columbus Ohio site: Banvard Gallery: Knowlton School of Architecture client: LeFevre Fellowshipsize: 15’ X 20’ material: Baltic Birch Plywood principal: Brandon Clifford + Wes McGee project team: Jake Haggmark \ Maciej Kaczynski \ Aaron Willette build team: Edgar Ascaño \ Kristy Balliet \ Katherine Bennette \ Beth Blostein \ Jenna Bolino \ Chris Carbone \ Tim Cousino \ Anthony Gagliardi \ Brian Koehler \ Darwin Menjivar \ Paul Miller \ Tony Nguyen \ Bart Overly \ Aaron Powers \ Steve Sarver \ Katy Viccellio \ Sean Zielinski .
