Review: Farsot – Life Promises Death (Lupus Lounge)
My review of Farsot's Life Promises Death, written for Heavy Music HQ:
Farsot, a German black metal band, have had a career spanning nearly 25 years. Despite not being very prolific, they have managed to create a unique musical world for themselves and an impressive musical perspective for their audience. Their fourth studio album, Life Promised Death, was announced after a seven-year hiatus following their applauded album, Fail·Lure.
Life Promised Death solidifies Farsot’s position as one of the most respected and influential storytellers in black metal, showcasing a brilliant blend of black metal with strong progressive and avant-garde influences. Farsot’s compositions have matured, resulting in a more relentless, colder, and more thought-provoking musical experience. The album’s songwriting complexity, the interweaving of different layers of instruments, melodies, and lyrics that challenge the existential philosophy of man and death, make Life Promised Death as one of the highlights of Farsot’s career.
Wow... okay so Sunn O))) is one of those bands that i have been on and off about for years. When they're on... they are fucking on, and right now they are fucking on. Sometimes I will go through phases where all i really want to listen to is a hype ass rap song, or a short and brutal grindcore song. Something easy, something familiar, melodic, singable. There is *Nothing* wrong with this kind of music, and a lot of my favorite albums of all time are this way. But sometimes you just have to pour yourself something stiff, whip out your favorite book, or even just roll something and sit back and take in something harsh, long, and beautiful. This is that album.
For the uninitiated it is pronounced SUN not Sun-Oh. Now that we have that borderline meme of a band explanation out of the way, this album is primarily made up of these elongated tremolo or just straight picked riffs that each note is dragged out to such an extent that it morphs into a new form. The distortion forcing the note to waver, rising and falling, beautifully in this droning procession of notes that hit you one after another. The vocals are just as harsh, screeching and also elongated so you can hear the inhales, and the pushing of the air out of the lungs and through the frayed and forcibly constructed vocal cords. This is an incredibly beautiful and emotional album. I recommend everyone give it a shot once. It might not be your thing, but it is an experience that is worth having, and one I love to revisit.
the debut album by Avant-garde Metal band Fleshvessel, "Yearning: Promethean Fates Sealed", which I lovingly illustrated over the course of a year, is out now on all platforms and formats
