Some thoughts about John Mandrake's 'introduction'
This is by far my favourite character introduction in the whole series specifically because it's written that way - as an introduction
John mandrake is introduced as a suave young magician/ politician who is popular with commoners and feared by his colleagues. He's built up in the introduction to be cool, detached and incredibly powerful; someone who is level headed and self assured.
He's immediately an interesting character.
But it's only by the association of the name that we know this is in fact Nathaniel - his manner and personality are so different to the boy we've read about so far:
Nathaniel the terrified 12 year old boy who summoned a Djinni in his bedroom for poorly thought out and hot-headed revenge.
Nathaniel the awkward goth 14 year old desperately trying to fit in with his colleagues and make a name for himself. All while slowly losing his morality out of fear of survival, and who's fear of losing control is manifesting in a unhealthy relationship with cleanliness.
It's only when Bartimaeus' explanation of how their relationship entirely broke down we see it happen in subtle changes and understand how he became John - through the extreme stress of running two departments, the constant war; through having to abandon his moral compass to keep his head above water.
But at first he's almost presented as someone else, another character that needs to have his rituals and habits explained to the reader because it might as well be someone completely different.
Ptolemy&Nat+Bart
Ptolemy and Nat give me the impression of the sun and the moon, warm and cold colors. The colors of their skin and costumes also contrast with each other.
They are polar opposites. But they are both stubborn and make the same choice in the end. They seem to be opposites, but they are surprisingly similar. I like this contrast between them.
Something about magicians in Bartimaeus Sequence erasing their own names for self protection is so Tasty. In order to perpetuate that violence, to treat demons (and commoners) as less than human, they must first symbolically make themselves unperson. So many cultures practiced damnatio memoriae as one of the worst punishments and they did it to themselves. If you are alive as long as your name is spoken they are dead long before they die.
Bartimaeus: yeah I can't stand humans or being summoned ideally I'd just be floating in the undifferentiated ether. The fact I immediately show sympathy and interest in humans who aren't magicians and clearly love conversation and talking, two things that cannot happen in an undifferentiated ether, are irrelevant.
Here's a project I've been working on for a year and a half. It took me a lot longer than I expected and the process of actually animating anything was just 40% of the time I spent on this.
Really hope you like it! Comments and reshares are appreciated!

A parody of a picture of a man trying to decide which girl to choose, hehe (Farrar might have been more appropriate for Bart's position).

When I told my friend “good luck” when they’re starting a book, I don’t mean “good luck with your reading! I hope you’ll like it 🥰♥️🌈” what I mean is “Oh boy, you’re in for a ride… you’ll need that luck🫣”
