Lady Well Killyon Ceremonies | Boyne Valley, Co Meath
The site of Lady Well in Killyon is typical of the sites of holy wells in the Boyne valley. There is a tumulus nearby which shows that the place was of importance in pagan times. The site of Lady Well in Killyon had probably been an important chief’s residence at the time of St Patrick, and was donated to Liadhán, a young kinswoman of the chief, who founded a convent there and built a church.…

Slightly torn on whether to do Connemara again in March, since there's still so much of Ireland I haven't seen, but I know it's my favorite region so far and it would be so nice to be able to wander more than I could on a bus tour (assuming I brave the driving thing this time). That also gets me pretty close to Wild Nephin, and that would mean, since Killarney was always a staple of the itinerary, this trip I can complete my life goal of visiting every national park in Ireland - even though I learned today one was added this year, my uncle and I stayed mostly around the Boyne Valley last November, so I'm ahead of the game thanks to the coolest tour guide. 😎☘️ So that gives me an approximate west-south-north triangle: Dublin to Connemara, Connemara to Kerry, Kerry to Cork, and then from Cork back to Dublin. Staying a little more regionally focused this time will mean missing out on things I wanted to do further north, including visiting my cousin's in-laws, but that's okay, maybe I can prioritize that next round. Now that I have a loose map of where I want to go, I can start figuring out how to get from place to place and what to see along the way! My mom was right, planning travel actually is almost as fun as the vacation itself.

'Twas down by Killarney's green woods that we strayed
When the moon and the stars they were shining
The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she'd be my love forever
Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any

Kerb stone 15: One of the most striking of all the kerb stones at Knowth, and one of the best known, this has been called the Sundial Stone. Martin Brennan in his 1980 book The Boyne Valley Vision (Dolmen) suggested that the large fanned symbol at the centre of the stone was a sundial, and that, in fact, the people who built the great monuments of Brú na Bóinne were the 'Master Diallers of the New Stone Age'. Australian engineer and author Neil L. Thomas, in his 1988 book Irish Symbols of 3500BC (Mercier Press) suggested that K15 represents a complex solar calendar, an "exact 365-day, sixteen month, four week month, five day week solar calendar".

As part of my Ceramics discipline I decided to research ancient Irish patterns and motifs. I wanted to include patterns in my bisque pieces that had links to Irish heritage because hurling is a traditional Irish sport.
Newgrange is a Neolithic Passage tomb in the Boyne Valley in County Meath. Kerbstone 52 and the Entrance Stone are the most decorated stones in Newgrange. They contain many geometric patterns such as spirals, triskeles, lozenges, cupmarks, concentric circles and wavy lines.
These designs were incised using sharp flint. Some were carved out in relief and others were engraved deeply using large stones, for example the cup marks.

According to legend, Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival, has strong links to County Meath in the Boyne Valley. Samhain began around 2,000 years ago to mark the harvest and a time of transition, with feasting and celebration as the long winter nights approached.

The gods of the Boyne Valley were watching over Mr Doolan’s 5th Year RE today as they visited Fourknocks and Newgrange. Ancient Pre-Christian monuments are a key feature of the Leaving Certificate Religion course. Experiencing the very locations of these amazing sites and touching the sacred carvings that date back over 5000 years, cannot help but give our students an added advantage in their preparation for the state exams. It is also pretty groovy to do. Fourknocks is particularly special as we had this ancient site all to ourselves, once we received the key from the local neighbour. The interpretive centre and museum at Newgrange has also had a recent development, which helped to make the experience highly immersive.

Collage and ink artwork of Newgrange   Newgrange, a 5,200 year old passage tomb located in the Boyne Valley in Ireland's Ancient East  It was built by Stone Age farmers, the mound is 85m (279ft) in diameter and 13m (43ft) high, an area of about 1 acre. A passage measuring 19m (62ft) leads into a chamber with 3 alcoves. The passage and chamber are aligned with the rising sun on the mornings around the Winter Solstice. The Stone Age (Neolithic) monument in the Boyne Valley, County Meath, it is the jewel in the crown of Ireland's Ancient East. Newgrange was constructed about 5,200 years ago (3,200 B.C.) which makes it older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza. The mound is ringed by 97 large kerbstones, some of which are engraved with symbols called megalithic art; https://art4you.ie/vendor/angelica-garcia/   Read the full article
