Great Barrier Oasis
On Thursday morning we woke up early and rushed to Wynyard Quarter to catch our ferry to Great Barrier Island. We chose the ferry instead of flights so we could bring our camping gear and food for the whole trip. The ferry was nothing like we envisioned. The majority of the open space was taken up by the carpark, with a single row of seats lining the port and starboard decks. We put on our sweaters and sat on the deck where we were able to enjoy the fresh air and get a tour of the Hauraki Gulf.
We arrived on Great Barrier Island just before 1 PM and picked up our rental car right from the port. From there, we went into the town of Tryphena to rent an additional fishing rod. The mulleted shopkeeper gave us a few tips of things to see on island and we quickly followed his advice. We went straight to the mermaid pools to check them out, but the tides weren’t right so we decided to drive the rest of the way to our campground. 
For the first two nights of our adventure we were staying towards the North end of the Island, near Port Fitzroy, at a place called Orama Oasis. The word oasis is often used as hyperbole, but this was the most accurate depiction of the word that I’ve ever experienced. Our campground was located on a patch of grass overlooking Karaka Bay. The grounds were filled with little villas, a rec center, a big shared kitchen, and private bathrooms with flushable toilets and hot showers. I could’ve stayed there for weeks.

After we toured the grounds, it started pouring. Greg and I unpacked the chilly bin and food in the kitchen while Aidan and David went rock fishing. There were several “work-ups” which is a swarm of birds eating small fish on the surface of the water. This is usually a good sign for fishing, as it means that there are likely a bunch of larger fish feeding below. We saw one of the locals urgently pull his tinney into the water and catch a fish within 4 minutes of getting into the water, on his first cast. 
Aidan and David had similar luck. They came back with three snappers that were big enough to keep! We watched them show off their filleting skills and then quickly set up the tents while there was a break in the rain. Greg fired up the grill and made us some fresh fish burgers for dinner.

We came back to the campsite to find a puddle in my tent! After about twenty minutes of sopping up water, wringing out the towel, and wiping stuff down, the tent was finally habitable again. We were all tired from the long day and passed out pretty early.
On Friday we slept in a bit and went for a hunt along the grounds for kayaks we could rent. There were plenty of kayaks but, to our frustration, none of them were for hire. We decided to go into Port Fitzroy to explore, where we found a lonely port and a burger shop that sold coffee. Up the hill was a general store where the entertainment for the cashier and guests was a brand new Roomba. If the main islands of NZ are a decade behind the US, then GBI is at least 3 decades in the past.

From the store we spotted a sign for a trek with a waterfall and decided to have a go at it. Warrens Loop Track consisted of a path through the bush, canopied by kānuka trees filled in with silver ferns. We made it to a waterfall that was bigger than anticipated, followed the path down to a road, and then to a campground by Rarohara Bay. Greg ran into one of his frisbee friends from Auckland who we continued to encounter throughout the trip. We ate our lunches at the campsite and explored the coast and then went to Whangapoua Beach. The guys embraced their inner child and had a blast bodysurfing in the waves. We walked the length of the quiet beach and found a pool of mini hermit crabs and snails to observe.

Back at camp, the guys went rock fishing while I stayed back to read and relax. I watched a surreal picturesque sunset over the bay and then started to get nervous that the guys weren’t back yet. They had to climb over oyster-lined rocks to get back and the tide was rising. I donned my headlamp and went out to search for them. I didn’t have to go too far before I found them. Luckily they were all fine, but so much for my relaxation! At least they got a few keepers. We were able to make fish tacos with the fresh snapper that were delightful enough to change my mood.

David made us all G&Ts with his fancy new gin and we played too many rounds of President to count. There was much debate over the Kiwi vs. American rules of the game with some negotiation and a little compromise.

As working remotely has become the new normal, hospitality group Global Hotel Alliance has begun to pivot to meet the demand for non-home workspaces – a kind of WeWork for executives. Their California-based Meritage brand is offering what they call ‘Office Zen’ at its Huntington Beach Paséa Hotel and Spa – an oceanfront workspace available 7am-7pm with highspeed wi-fi, two-line speakerphone and complimentary coffee and tea. Combined with the resort’s rigorous distancing, cleaning and sanitising policy, as lockdowns lift this may prove popular with executives who want somewhere more professional than home, but have abandoned the idea of traditional office life. The Global Hotel Alliance has 35+ brands with more than 570+ hotels spread across 85 countries in its portfolio, so if this proves successful, we could soon see the concept spread worldwide.
Business connectivity platform Okta has released its latest monthly report on apps and usage and found, to nobody’s great surprise, that between February and March, far more users adopted new functionality than usual. “We see growth in two major areas: collaboration tools, especially video conferencing apps, and network security tools such as VPNs that extend secure access to remote workers,” said the report. Zoom was the fastest growing app with 110% growth in unique workforce users in March over February 2020. (For comparison, Zoom grew only 6% during that same time period in 2019.) RingCentral ranked at #6 with 39% growth, and Cisco Webex took #7 with 37% growth. However, as firms tried to keep their information secure during the rush online, network security and performance tools also boomed. Palo Alto Networks Global Protect showed 94% growth in March over February, compared to 20% for that same period in 2019. Cisco AnyConnect  was close behind with 86% growth. Citrix ADC, which accelerates application performance and secures apps from attacks, had 56% month-over-month growth in that same period. Proofpoint Security Awareness Training was the fifth fastest growing app, with 40% growth. Proofpoint also appeared at #10 with 22% growth, representing the increased usage of their Proofpoint Protection Server, Proofpoint Secure Share, and ProofPoint Threat Insight Dashboard products. An unexpected transition to working from home often requires a new set of problem-solving skills. Many users are turning to Freshservice for their cloud-based IT service desk solution: between February and March of 2020, the number of unique users grew 25%. And LinkedIn Learning experienced 23% month-over-month growth, showing us that users are expanding their skill sets and possibly using this time to invest in themselves.
Police in New Zealand have been required to enforce crowd control measures at a popular fast food outlet after large numbers of people rushed to buy burgers following a relaxing of the country’s lockdown measures. The country spent almost five weeks under a strict, level four lockdown but eased into level three restrictions on Tuesday, meaning some children could go back to school and 400,000 people were able to go back to work. Highway 1 (I think)
The last 5 days of February I spent exploring the top of the North Island with Z. We drank prosecco in bed, fought giant moths, kissed in a tent, swam in rough water, and even today I am still finding Te Paki sand in my shoes. I am a meticulous planner, which is exhausting but its part of who I am, I have a bucket list, I have dreams, I usually like to do all the driving too, but this trip Zac was pilot and I was the co-driver with all the plans. 
On Wednesday night we left Auckland for Mangawhai, and we stayed in a little unit that wasn’t exactly in Mangawhai- it was down a wildly bumpy gravel road that was quite long and completely unexpected and I was a bit worried about the car but she survived. We arrived and lay around for a bit and talked about dinner and Zac ever so graciously agreed to drive to Waipu so I could try McLeod’s. It was amazing, it was a big Bucket List tick for me! I think the burger was better than the pizza, I honestly can’t wait to do a day trip up here and eat again!

We then drove back to our little motel unit and stopped to watch the sunset, it was magical, although that evening was very hot and I got barely any sleep.

We then headed north again, our second day was a pretty long day, a lot of driving and a lot of stops. I asked Zac if we could stop and look at the Hundertwasser bathrooms.

We then continued on to Waitangi, I’d actually never been onto the grounds before and I found the experience very enlightening, there were lots of stories I’d never heard before and I learned a lot. The grounds are well kept and when you look around Busby’s house you can see the inside of the walls and how it was made. Really interesting place.

Our last two stops on our second day were Rainbow falls and The Stone Store & Kemp House. I actually thought you could walk behind the falls but was sad to find out it would take some hard parkour to get across the rocks and I’m not a risk-taker so I just observed the wonderful scenery. 
The Stone Store is such a cool place to visit, and it was a nice place for our last stop. We then actually had to pop into a supermarket so we would have some food and back up water for when we went camping, we got so many pizza rolls!! 
Our accommodation for the evening was in Mangonui and looked over the water. We had dinner and the famous Mangonoui fish and chip shop while looking at the boats.

The more time I spend with Zac and the further into the world I explore with him, the more I learn about him and how to love him, and what I love about him. I love that he buys ice cream when we get petrol, and he carries a battery pack phone charger because I don’t, I love that he is creative and sees the world differently to me, and I love that he is a yes person (most of the time hehe).

Day 26: why yes! I know about art! And film cameras! And vintage Levi jeans! (the Melbourne hipster has met her match in Auckland?)
I went on a walk around Auckland, past the famous rainbow steps! Dropped off some film to be developed and bought a couple of rolls, and did some browsing in a few of the classic K Rd vintage and thrift stores.
I’ll definitely be back with more room in my suitcase so I can buy things!

My favourite exhibition was a collection of Louise Henderson’s work from across her career. She was born in France but says she felt like a bird uncaged when she reached New Zealand.

Her later works shifted dramatically, and she said that with this collection she wanted the viewer to feel enveloped by the New Zealand forest.

There was a really cool space where every wall was magnetic, and the middle of the room was filled with boxes of different coloured and shaped magnets.
It was up to the people at the exhibition to create and change the art on the walls, and I did a little rearranging on this piece here!

Two More Skip One
On the morning of the 3rd, we awoke to grey skies and the threat of rain. We were meant to go to Mt. Aspiring National Park, stay in the hut, then head to the West Coast, but there was a severe weather advisory for the rest of the week. Evan’s friend got trapped in Franz Josef for 2 weeks last year around the same time and had to get helicoptered out. We weren’t so keen on that so we decided to call an audible and go towards the nicer weather in Mount Cook.
Before leaving Queenstown, we had to make one last stop at Ferg. Greg had just bought new climbing shoes and was itching to try them out, so we went to the QTN location of Basecamp and did a mix of bouldering and top roping. Afterwards, we grabbed an early dinner and a few beers at Altitude Brewing Co before hitting the road again.
We got to our campsite on Lake Poaka late at night. It was right past Twizel and had minimal light pollution, so we were able to see the Milky Way. We played a few rounds of Spicy before bed.

The next morning, we got up and drove straight to the base of Mount Cook where we found a cute cafe with the most incredible view of the mountain. We sipped our coffees as we took in the sights. Then, we took off on the Hooker Valley Track which follows the Hooker River, crosses over 3 suspension bridges, and ends at a glacial lake. It was a crowded trek, but understandably so. The effort to reward ratio was off the charts.

We pulled off the main track and sat by a secluded alpine tarn to eat our smooshed PB&J’s. Greg spent a while getting the perfect pictures & time-lapses. I’d say he succeeded.

When we finished, we set up camp at the White Horse Hill Campsite at the bottom of the mountain where we had a quick snack and then tried to find a crag nearby to climb. This was an unsuccessful journey consisting of a sketchy bush hike lined with spear grass. We ended up turning around and heading back to camp before reaching the crag.
We threw together a random dinner with whatever leftovers we had in the van. It turned into a pretty solid rice noodle stir-fry which we took turns eating out of a big metal bowl. The irony of doing this in a pandemic world is not lost on me. We had yet another night of playing cards in the van before we went to bed.

The next morning we drove to the carpark for the Blue Lakes and Tasman Glacier Walks. Al showed me how to make pour over coffee while the guys slung the frisbee in the parking lot. Once we were caffeinated, we went to the not-so-blue lakes walk. The lakes are no longer blue because instead of being fed by glacial melt like they were when they were named, they are now fed by rainwater which hosts green algae. It was a bit sad to observe such a distinct consequence of climate change.
We did another short walk to the Tasman Lake which actually had the crisp blue glacial water we were hoping to see. Unfortunately, this glacier is shrinking by about 480 to 820 m a year. I felt lucky to see it at this point but disappointed that it wouldn’t be the same for future generations to observe.

Next, we got in the cars and drove to Lake Tekapo. Along the way, we stopped at the alpine salmon shop to pick up some sashimi and smoked salmon. When we got to the lake, we walked around and looked at the sheepdog statue and the Church of the Good Shepherd. I got carried away building my first rock cairn on the beach.

Eventually, we made it to Christchurch and got to take showers! For dinner and drinks, we went to Cassels & Sons Brewing where they had a 2-for-1 pizza deal. The pizza was quality and the vibes were hip.

The next morning we had brunch at another super hip spot called Addington Coffee Co-op which had a quaint shop attached to it. Once we were well-fed, we headed to the Cattlestop Crag for outdoor climbing with Evan and Al’s friends, Ryan and Kath. I struggled on some overhanging walls with tough starts but eventually completed a few (if you don’t count stepping on Ryan’s knee as cheating...).

Everyone was keen on getting Greg and I to try lead climbing. We were both terrified, but intrigued. It felt like we couldn’t say no so we went for it and it was a success! I’m so glad I tried it. It felt like such an authentic way of climbing. After leading the 10, Greg went and lead climbed a 13! So much progress in one 4-hour session.
For dinner, we all went to Ryan and Kath’s beautiful house for a BBQ. The night consisted of frisbee slinging, kitty petting, gear discussions, and chess playing. Shoutout to the Queen’s Gambit for being an inspiration.

The next day we had some smoked salmon on fresh Alourdough before hitting up a frolf course. Later, we went to Hagley Park and explored the botanical gardens. For dinner, we went to Eruption Brewing in Lyttelton and shared laughter and and good burgers. We popped into Wunderbar afterwards and what do you know, they had chess boards! We played a few rounds before going back to the house for our “two more skip one” night of spicy uno.

For our last meal of the trip, Evan and Al took us to the Mediterranean Food Co., which is a store and Italian restaurant. This was heaven to Greg. If only we brought bigger suitcases! We enjoyed some high quality pizza, pasta, and gelato before we said our goodbyes and made the trip back to Auckland.

This weekend Casey and I played tourist in Auckland for our three month anniversary, and it was wonderful! I can kind of see now why people rate it as such a great city! 
After we both arrived and checked in to the hotel on Friday night, we got ready and headed out to Crunch Tower Desserts and Drinks, which was down a cute little alleyway in Parnell. We shared some freakshakes and some waffles. It was delish! Especially the waffles, they were so crispy and delightful (this is the start of a post mostly about food, you’ve been warned). We then went for a wander to grab me a cup of tea, and then headed to The Basement which is a really groovy little venue, to watch Snort. I bought tickets to this comedy show online, without really much of an indication as to what it was about, but gosh, it was awesome! They basically would take a single word suggested by the audience and then turn it in to skits, all completely impromptu, it was hilarious. After that we had a nice walk back to the hotel through the city. 
The next morning we headed out for breakfast, and thanks to TripAdvisor found an awesome place called The Store. It was pumping, but they found us a table, and the service was excellent. I had a gnocchi - for breakfast! But it was delicious. And then after brekky we went round the back to their little bakery type thing and bought a doughnut for later coz they just looked so delicious! And they were! We headed back to our room for some chill time, before hitting the shops on Queen Street later. For lunch, we headed in to New Market and went to Burger Burger for shakes and burgers, both delicious! And then we enjoyed some wine and watched the rugby (Casey more than I) while we got ready for the evening. For date night we headed firstly to a new rooftop bar/restaurant called Seven - by the time we heard about this place we already had dinner plans, so we just headed there for some cocktails before dinner, they were really interesting and delicious! And the venue was awesome, though I pretty much love anything on a rooftop - we will definitely be heading back for dinner though! We then wandered to the Mexican Cafe near the Sky Tower for dinner, we shared some meals (and more drinks), ate way too much, saw a lady in an AMAZING flamingo dress, had a great time, and then taxi’d home to collapse in to a food coma!
Sunday morning after we checked out we headed on another breakfast hunt, and although we debated heading back to The Store for round two, we decided we better try something new so we found a place called Melba, which was also really nice! Better coffee too, I thought. Then we had a leisurely (and at points windswept) stroll through the city for about an hour and a half, we wandered some parks and cute shopping arcades and things, and then we headed to Moustache Cookie Bar for milkshakes and cookies, which were delish, as expected. Because the weather was still holding out we decided we would make the trek back to the carpark at the hotel rather than taxi-ing. Once we got to the car we went for a drive out to Mission Bay and looked at all the pretty houses out there, and visited the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial. Then we drove out to the Wynyard Quarter. Unfortunately by this stage it was rainy, so we couldn’t have a proper look around, but I am definitely keen to head back! We grabbed a late lunch at a little Central and South American place I can’t quite remember the name of - Casey’s lunch was great, and the drinks were awesome, but my lunch unfortunately was pretty average - but you can’t win ‘em all!
Sadly after that we said goodbye, but we are already planning our next Auckland getaway!

Auckland - Day 1
February 25th
Like I already mentioned, I was still running on my home schedule. So, having been up since 4.30 am I had no problem catching the sunrise 2 hours later. It was beautiful! And having the pleasure of watching it without having to leave the house was even better.

I spontaneously decided to video call my parents for a bit and with that unfortunately woke up Gitte just before 7.
We started the day off right with some muesli and fresh fruit and were out of the apartment by 9 am. First thing on the agenda was a stroll along the harbor front, then we walked up Queen street and walking through Albert park went to The Domain.

While the day had started out a bit chilly by early afternoon it had gotten quite hot. Even though it was supposedly only 22 degrees it felt more like 30. We had serious regrets about not having put on shorts.
And as the day progressed our food intake got less healthy, too. I grabbed a chocolate frosty from Wendy’s on Queen street and we had cupcakes at a place very close to the apartment. The cupcake each of us had, snickers flavor for Gitte and Jelly Tip for me, was so good we immediately decided to return some time during our Auckland stay.

After another quick stop at the grocery store we bought dinner. The host had left a menu on the table from a grill around the corner, so we decided to get something there and take it up to the room. I had a chicken burger, which was freaking huge, and some fries with aioli. Both tasted really good. Gitte got a falafel wrap.
According to an app we walked around 20 km today. That added with little sleep and the heat, at some point I had had a headache too and I’m just so tired I’m heading to bed now...it being not even 9.30 pm yet.

A Week in Christchurch: Part Two
My next few days were met with precision planning, I spent some time with my brother while I ran errands (getting a new drivers license, and new bank cards) then we saw a movie with the legendary Lewis Road Whittaker’s chocolate milk to accompany us. Sophie picked me up and we went out for dinner at Velvet Burger when we were turned away from the new restaurant at the mall because I didn’t have an NZ ID card to prove my 24 years. Ciders and conversation flowed and it was like I’d never been away at all. The following day I picked up Bryce and we drove out to Lake Coleridge as a new destination for us both. We took some selfies/scenic shots across the water - which was the bluest we’d ever seen, and then I drove us on further to Washpen Falls. We were greeted by a man on a motorcycle and a lovely French woman charged us the $20 entrance fee for the nature track. Taking the map in hand and water bottles in the other we trekked up the forest path lined by tree roots. A few stops for photos along the way, a bench amongst some tussock grass with an extraordinary view of the Canterbury Plains, and then we had finally reached the waterfall. More photos here, posing on a giant rock that had been placed very conveniently in the pool of water directly beneath the waterfall. After finishing the track in record time we drove back to the city via the Cookietime cookie factory. I bought several bags of cookies to enjoy and Bryce took some photos of me sitting in the Cookietime car. I fattened myself up on those cookies as well as a second Drexels breakfast - this time with Lou followed by another movie with a salted caramel choc top and popcorn that brought back 5 years of Hoyts memories. I caught up with Sam over an iced mocha when she could squeeze me in between jobs and as I was walking through the mall to go home I saw Laura shopping so I joined her briefly. Crossing off my friend catch ups all in one day! Lou and I caught up again before I had to head back to Amsterdam and work but I made the drive out to Spencer Park where she lives near the beach in a caravan. We had a drink lying on the sand in 25 degree warmth and then threw around a frisbee with our feet in the water. It was the perfect end to my short holiday at home. I flew to Auckland that night and stayed in an overpriced backpackers just off Queen St then headed out first thing in the morning to the supermarket to buy all the Vegemite, Milo, Tim Tams and Whittakers chocolate I would need to take to Europe. On the walk back to the backpackers to check out I discovered a small Coffix shack that was unfortunately closed but I was amazed anyway that an Israeli idea had come so far! I headed to the airport with a bus load of tourists and began my long trip back to Amsterdam with a flat white and muffin, then a stronger rum and ginger beer in the duty free shop. Bangkok was another easy layover for me and I spent half an hour on the phone to my colleague Viktoria telling me the gossip from work and how much she missed me. Onwards to London and my day consisted of storing my bag and then taking the tube into the city for a spot of shopping and lunch at my favourite fast burger restaurant - Five Guys. A delayed flight from London Luton back to Amsterdam and I finally dragged my suitcase through my door at around midnight. I unpacked immediately despite being about to fall over with exhaustion because the next adventure was about to begin - Olga was arriving in the morning to visit!
