There was nothing Jamie wouldn’t let her do. She waited as Reg dived straight into her open eyes, to drown in the sea that hides between them. Jamie did the same, finding the little green specks in Regulus’ eyes, and trying to navigate between the little branches sprouting. “Why do you keep coming to meet me?” 

Jamie fell silent, only for a moment before she answered, “I’m a poet.” 

“Being a poet turns you into a stalker then?” Reg questioned. 

“I’ve come to see a concert, I’m not a stalker,” Jamie told her. “I simply follow my muse wherever it takes me.” 

“Who’s to say I’m your muse?” Reg asked. 

Jamie shrugged, “It’s not something someone can choose.” 

Reg hummed shortly, “If I’m your muse that means I can read your scribblings then.” 

Jamie pursed her lips with a shake of her head, she said, “I’m afraid I can’t do that for you.”

Pitching a theory

Mermaids and mermen are the females of the species. They all have the same bits just different decorations. They all lay unfertilised fish eggs

Some mermaids live in a lagoon and will go find male fish, bring them to the lagoon to inseminated the eggs, then let them go

Others who live in the shallows will hide their eggs in amongst other fish's eggs. They'll go and gather their young once they hatch

Others will lay eggs on the sides of sharks or the underside of some driftwood and let it go off into the ocean deep to be fertilised when it is

A mermaid's human half will look like it's mermaid mother's. The dark skin of the lagoon, the pale of the deep, the myriad of appearances in the corals

Their fish half will look like whatever fertilised their egg

So, you can have a lagoon and a deep mermaid who were both fertilised by an eel, who would meet and although they don't know each other they call one another brother

Your society of mermaids in the corals look different in every way, including different tails. To the uninformed they would seem unrelated, but no, that is just the way they are

Some lagoon mermaids choose their fathers for the aesthetic. Fish with only the frilliest, most complex of fins are brought into the lagoon when they're laying. Other lagoons use more inscrutable reasons, judgements of worth or a quality humans don't appreciate make the choice

But the mermaids of the deep, the wild and lonely ones, they can get strange. Sharks, angler fish, a turtle

Then one egg rolls onto the sand and finds itself in a situation no one considered. A horse wanders by, having just finished with a mare...

Jane Austen Charted #21: Age Gaps Between Austen Siblings

So firstly, Jane Austen doesn't usually supply birthdates, we only know the Elliot family, Robert Martin, and Harriet Smith if I remember correctly, so all of these are estimates. It's possible that Kitty Bennet was born in November 1802 and Lydia January 1804 and that is still technically two years, though not 24 months.

However, still interesting how nicely spaced the children are in most families. I imagine people understood that having babies immediately after the other was bad for women's health. Also, breastfeeding was going through a renaissance among the upper class.

Some ages just aren't given, these are the families with enough data.

as for fic recs, really just comb through my bookmarks and see what piques your interest. i tend to only bookmark stuff if i know i'll want to reread it later or if there was a part that really stuck in my brain somehow. otherwise i kinda hesitate to rec fics? everyone likes what they like and idk what that is, and it's so personal, and sometimes you have to be in the mood for something, that a universal rec is so hard! ahhhh i'm sorry this is so wishy-washy.

wrt to naruto fic inspo, i feel like i read every si/oc fic out there up to 2020. (probably not true given the immensity of the nrt fandom, but you get the idea.) what an incredible, amazing, creative genre of fic. i say the following with nothing but love and sincere respect: some of the si fics out there are a lot more immature than others, or didn't hold up to the initial draw when i reread them, but 1) if it's not my thing i can just leave and 2) there's so much charm in everyone's vision! power fantasy or trope deconstruction or world-building interrogation--i love it!

i've mentioned this in the comments (and maybe on here?) at various points, but i'll say it again: tcba is at least as much a love letter to naruto si/oc fic as it is a naruto fanfiction. sure, it's my take on the concept, but it's a fic that probably doesn't make sense unless you're already at least a little bit into naruto si conventions. (the chuunin exams being the least of the fic hurdles lmao) and that's basically to say, tcba couldn't exist w/o all those other fics and authors.
