Another commission from a while ago! A fellow DnD player asked me to turn a scene from their game into a comic.

(What do you call people who are your dnd pals by nature of having overlapping player groups...? DnD-players-in-law? Step-DnD-friends?)

I'm going to make my response it's own post because I think the point is important

As someone who is autistic and has BPD and CPTSD and loads of trauma yes you sometimes need to change how you interact with others to keep people around

When I was 13 I hit the few friends I had when I was angry

I had to change that in order to keep those friendships

When I was in my early 20s if I was losing an disagreement with my husband I would threaten to kill myself. My husband told me it hurt him and was cruel and manipulative behaviour, because it was.

So I worked hard to change that to keep my relationship

It's easy to say "I shouldn't have to change for others" and that's true to an extent. You shouldn't change your interests or passions or dim your light. And you should have space to be imperfect and flawed and not have to pretend your ugly bits aren't real. But if something you are doing it causing other people harm you kinda need to change that.

That's called "living in a society"

People adapt to each other and make space for each other in their lives. You adapt to them and they adapt to you

You start being more diligent about throwing away the empty toilet roll because it really bothers them. They start warning you before they run the blender because you hate loud noises

I stopped threatening to kill myself because I was mad I was losing an argument and my husband stopped being so vocally judgemental amount media he personally dislikes

There is a certain type of person who heard the phrase "your emotions are valid" and took that to mean "my emotional reactions and my behaviour are always objectively correct because my emotions are valid and if you have an emotional response or react to what I'm doing negatively then you are wrong and you can't be hurt because my emotions are valid"

And that's a recipe for disaster

Your emotions are valid to feel. They are how you feel and there are reasons you feel the way you do

However, your reactions and behaviour are something you can learn to control and can be irrational

We live in a society and we as people change each other as we interact and that isn't necessarily a bad thing

#important as hell #we need to give way #we are all walking our own path #doesnt mean its valid to elbow others out of the way to make it easier for ourselves

Alright I know the gag of people asking for spoilers has been run into the ground by this point but I think it’s still funny so here goes:

Hey can you describe the upcoming plot in very specific detail? Actually maybe you could draw it so it’s easier to follow the action. Although drawing and writing all of that at once might be a lot to handle, so you could release it in batches every once in a while instead of all at once. It would be like some sort of webcomic! Then we could read the updates and learn the plot as we get new pages! What a neat concept, am I right?

idk man, that seems like a great concept, but I'm afraid it's a bit far-fetched.

Do you really think anyone would read that? Like, pay attention to the dialogue and understand what the characters are saying? Figure out small bits of foreshadowing in order to theorize effectively about what could happen next? Consider larger themes and put them together with how the characters act to understand the author's intended meaning beyond just the surface-level, at-face-value reading and shallow interpretation of only what is immediately apparent on the page?

It feels like it could be something... but I just don't know.

i have a rescue greyhound and the 3-3-3 rule is no joke. Dude still is just naturally an anxious and timid creature, but he just about turned into a different dog at the 3 month mark

Yeah it's amazing what time can do! :D but also, greyhounds are great. Congrats on your spindly creature.

so ive been following you for years now and i love your comic but mostly what i see now adays is your awesome reactions and asks and stuff - which is great! - but i decided to break down and read your comic on tapas. i didnt realize how much i missed and the impact of just sitting down and reading it is much more intense. youre a very talented storyteller and i knew that but im still blown away by this. thank you so much for sharing your skills, time, energy - especially since i saw you recently say you basically do this and work and nothing else. which makes me wonder what are you gonna do when you're done with WD!Steven? like do you have other projects youd like to work on and i just missed you saying so? whatever you do take care of yourself!

I do indeed have SO many projects I want to work on.

Unfortunately, I'm a bit committed to WDAU at the moment. I am trying to draw other stuff on the side, but it's very difficult to fit stuff in.

One project I wanted to do was a little slice of life comic series about my partner and I living in Japan as a mixed couple.

Another was an original comic that I still hope to have the time to launch someday.....

And there are actually other projects, like an SU ttrpg that I wanted to put out, which is currently on hold because... Again... I'm too busy to finish it.

The reason I haven't talked about these projects much is because I feel incredibly embarrassed about posting anything that isn't at least some level of completed-ness. I don't want to announce something that I'll never get to finish. So unless I have a good head start on something AND I know I have a few things lined up to share, I kinda keep quiet....

I would really like to, but realistically.... I don't know if I have the time. Each liveblog takes a long time and I barely have time to draw because of puppy business.

So... maybe yes? But not soon, I'm afraid.

Let me preface this by saying I want all the dog updates (dupdates?) all the time, but also it would be very funny if you only posted Wednesday updates on Wednesdays. (How is the settling in going? Does she let you pick her up, and if so does she enjoy it?)

Hello friend! She's settling in nicely! And yes, she absolutely does let me pick her up. In three weeks we've graduated from "running away when I come near her" to "will climb into my lap herself and settle there". 😂

We've also graduated from 'scaredy puppy' to 'feral child with an insatiable thirst for adventure". At this point, she lets me reach into her mouth freely, which is great, because I have to do so often to remove the nuts/rocks/plants/dung/beetles she picks up and carries with her on walks.

I am also happy to report that I have many more pupdates coming! I just have to find the time to draw them in a funny way.

And I am, in fact, planning to post Wednesday only on Wednesdays... :) it just seems fair.

Do you have a unique childhood memory? Like something you believe has only happened to you?

Nah. One of the beautiful things about humanity is that even though we all have unique memories and experiences, we are never singular in the way we experience the world. There will always be someone, no matter how far, who understands what you went through.

I did, however, partake in the occasional delicacy of red ant acid by licking a blade of grass and sticking it on an anthill for them to angrily spray, only to then shake the ants off and suck on that grass while I wandered about. It was sour.

She's adorable, she'll hopefully adjust well. What breed is she, or is she a mutt?

She's a standard mutt, yeah! Her siblings were all different colors and one has floppy ears so it's a bit of a mystery. We have a hunch she's at least part Kai ken, a Japanese breed, but it's difficult to say for sure.
