'It seems that not a week goes by without another talented and successful artist revealed to have some connection in or around Croydon.
The latest is filmmaker Andrew Haigh, whose much-praised movie All Of Us Strangers is set in Sanderstead where he grew up and in the centre of Croydon itself (the “unloved south London borough”, as The Guardian described it in its film review)...'

Croydon
Croydon is a large town located in south London, England. It is the seat of the London Borough of Croydon, and is one of the largest commercial areas in Greater London. The city is home to a wide range of shops, and a lively night economy. There are many museums and attractions in the city, as well as a large sports complex.
The town’s name is derived from the Old French word croie dune, meaning “chalk hill”. It is located on the northern edge of the chalk hills known as the North Downs. The area is a major centre for both the labour and temperance movements. In the early nineteenth century, Croydon was a thriving commercial district of London. Public houses were the sites of early labour meetings. However, Croydon also had a strong temperance movement. Georgina King Lewis, an early member of the Croydon United Temperance Council, set up a dry center for the labour movement in the town. Learn more.
The town is home to several political parties. The Conservative Party controls the council, with approximately 45% of seats being held by Conservatives. The Lib Dems hold just one seat in the town. Croydon Borough Council is divided into 24 wards, and all of the seats on the council were up for re-election in the 2006 local elections. The Conservatives took 10 seats from Labour and one from the Liberal Democrats. This makes the Conservatives the majority party in Croydon.
Croydon has several theatres, and many community arts groups. The town has a large, landscaped green space that is adjacent to the town hall and Clocktower art centre. It is also home to several small comedy venues and community arts groups. The Spread Eagle Theatre is a modern 50-seat studio theatre, which collaborates with the Old Joint Stock Theatre in Birmingham.
The city’s history dates back to the 18th century, when the town became an important stop for stage coaches. The town was also the endpoint of two early commercial transport links with London. The Surrey Iron Railway arrived in Croydon in 1803, and it was extended to Merstham in 1805. The Croydon, Merstham and Godstone Railway followed in 1809. The Croydon Canal branched off the Grand Surrey Canal at Deptford. Later, in 1839, the London and Croydon Railway began running between London Bridge and West Croydon.
The town is also home to several historic buildings. The Croydon Town Hall is the city’s third town hall, which was built in 1895. The town’s first town hall was built in 1566, and the second one was constructed in 1808 and demolished in 1895. The current town hall was designed by local architect Charles Henman and was officially opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales on 19 May 1896. The building is built of red brick from Wrotham in Kent, with green Westmorland slates used for the roof.
In the past, Croydon was a bustling market town. It was the gateway between Brighton and London, and was home to the Surrey Iron Railway. In 1809, it was followed by the Croydon Canal and then the London and Croydon Railway. In the early twentieth century, Croydon opened an aerodrome, which operated until 1959. Sadly, this historic site was badly damaged during World War II. The last scheduled flight to Croydon departed from Croydon on 30 September 1959.
A great place to also visit is:

MAGNET, part 1
Tumblr media
I have joined MAGNET! Who they? They are the Museums and Galleries Network for Exhibition Touring. This is a network of 11 UK regional museums who are experimenting with sharing resources to develop stunning touring exhibitions over the next 4 years. This is led by the Horniman Museum and Gardens who are using the exhibition ‘Hair: Untold Stories’ as a pilot. After the Horniman display from Spring 2022 the exhibition will be packed up and travel to Sheffield Museums and Tullie House in Carlisle. This pilot is paid by a grant from the Art Fund.
I have suffered some déjà vu about MAGNET as this is what I was asked to do for Croydon Clocktower museum exhibitions over 20 years ago. However, that all halted as potential museum partners could never sign up to  formal agreements as we were all victims of the first wave of 21st century cutbacks in UK local councils.
My job now is co-ordinating the ‘Hair’ tour as well as helping with the logistics of developing new exhibitions developed by the partner museums. Strong ideas include: Sustainability, Gender and Colour. Another interesting topic bubbling under all this creativity is the eco impact of touring exhibitions (we also looked at this at Croydon Clocktower) which should come under the title of: Legacy.

parc central residences at east
Croydon has a long and diverse history stretching back to the Bronze Age. Modern day Croydon has a bustling centre with excellent facilities and a prosperous business community - it is home to over 20 'blue chip' companies - has good links to central London, whilst also providing an easy escape to the country.
With a range of property on offer to buy or rent, it attracts diverse residents. The area has a variety of flats, including classic Victorian and Edwardian conversions and modern apartments and flats in purpose built blocks. Two bedroom flats to rent in Croydon will cost on average around £900 per month, depending on the location and the property itself. If you're looking to buy a two bedroom flat, expect to pay around £160,000. Houses in the area are also varied, with a good range of detached houses as well as Victorian and 1930s terraces and semis. A three bedroom house in a good location will be around £240,000 or more to buy, whilst renting a similar property will cost around £1200 per calendar month.

Croydon is now the second-biggest shopping destination in the region, after central London. Shopping Centres include the Whitgift Centre and the Centrale. It offers good nightlife with a variety of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and cinemas. There are several other smaller local venues for comedy and community events too so you're never short of options.
Despite its lively core, the area has more than 1000 hectares of green space and woodland so it's not hard to find some peace and quiet. The North Downs and Surrey Countryside are also within easy reach.

Croydon is located on the on the natural transport corridor between London and the south coast and has good access to the M23 and M25. There are numerous bus routes, with most buses serving West Croydon Bus Station. The rail network connects the area to many major towns and cities across the UK, as well as Gatwick and Luton Airports, along with high speed links to the City. The main station for these services is East Croydon Station. West Croydon Station is on the East LondonLine operated by London Overground. The lightrail system, Tramlink, also connects Croydon to the surrounding area.

'Bones of Croydon' exhibition Saturday 4 March 2017 - January 2019 by david sankey Via Flickr: In 2014, human remains were discovered during building works beneath the driveway of a family home in Riddlesdown. The police were called and a sample of the bones was sent to a laboratory in Florida for carbon dating. The results showed that the bones dated from AD 670 - 775, meaning that this person lived and was buried in the Croydon area during Anglo-Saxon times (AD 410 - 1066). Subsequently, the remains of an almost complete adult skeleton, along with the incomplete leg bone of a 'sub-adult', were accessioned into the Museum of Croydon's collections. In 2016, we commissioned a 'Human bone report' to find out more about these skeletons and what they could tell us about the Anglo-Saxon period. This was conducted by Dr Rebecca Redfern at the Museum of London's Centre for Human Bioarchaeology. The ‘Bones of Croydon’ exhibition, displays the human remains recovered from this site along with a selection of Anglo-Saxon archaeological finds from elsewehere in the Borough, giving an insight into life and burial practices in Croydon over 1,200 years ago. The name ‘Croydon’ has been suggested as Anglo-Saxon in origin, derived from ‘Croh denu’ meaning crocus valley. Over the past hundred years and more, evidence of Croydon's Anglo-Saxon history has been discovered from several Anglo-Saxon burial sites, some of which is included in this exhition. The three main known Anglo-Saxon sites, at Lion Green Road, Riddlesdown Road and Park Lane / Edridge Road, were included in Historic England's Archaeological Priority Areas in Croydon report. With potential future excavation and research at these sites more Anglo-Saxon history in Croydon could still be uncovered... www.museumofcroydon.com/ixbin/indexplus?record=ART9105 , Riesco Gallery, 4 March 2017 - January 2018. The town is served by several rail links but the East Croydon station is the busiest of them all. Opened in 1841, the transportation hub serves both the National Rail network and the Tramlink, and is used by over 30 million people on an annual basis.
Bromley
Situated at about nine miles from the intersection of Charing Cross, Bromley is a popular London district with a population of about 72.000 people. The district has a rich cultural heritage is home to several landmarks that are related to the British Military.
Woolwich is strongly associate with the Arsenal Football Club as the team’s first stadium is located in the area. Rental fees in the neighbourhood are higher than the ones from the above-mentioned areas but are still more affordable than in most parts of the city and are below the average for the Borough of Greenwich.
