A whole volume could well be written on the myths of modern man, on the mythologies camouflaged in the plays that he enjoys, in the books that he reads. The cinema, that "dream factory," takes over and employs countless mythical motifs—the fight between hero and monster, initiatory combats and ordeals, paradigmatic figures and images (the maiden, the hero, the paradisal landscape, hell, and so on). Even reading includes a mythological function, not only because it replaces the recitation of myths in archaic societies and the oral literature that still lives in the rural communities of Europe, but particularly because, through reading, the modern man succeeds in obtaining an "escape from time" comparable to the "emergence from time" effected by myths. Whether modern man "kills" time with a detective story or enters such a foreign temporal universe as is represented by any novel, reading projects him out of his personal duration and incorporates him into other rhythms, makes him live in another "history."

So I was watching Krory's arc the other night when a thought hit me: This story is familiar. Pretty blonde lady living with a vampire (allegedly) in an isolated castle....I've seen this before.
Actually, I've seen it since...
Tumblr media
Same aesthetic, just 10+ years later.
I've made this joke before but...if I had a nickel for every time I've seen a pretty blonde woman go to live with some vampire guy in an isolated castle, I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.
At least Dracula and Lisa had a happier ending than Krory and Eliade did.

Was there something in here with him? He paused, face expressionless, his entire body listening. No ... probably not ... definitely not. This time there was no thrill along the nape of his neck, no prescient frisson of intuition and warning to make him reach for the gun, as he sometimes did, and prowl carefully around his lair, searching for signs of unwelcome visitors.
After running through his wake-up routine, he drifted a bit, gaze spooling absently across the littered surface of the coffee table, where case files, congealed pizza, a half-empty beer bottle, and a damp TV Guide reflected a stark but grayish strobic light, their irregular cover blanketing a lower strata of older and dustier debris—skin mags, mostly, shuffled in with stacks of comics. Vamperotica. Squee. Sisters of Mercy. The latest Fortean Times, bookmarked with a section of last Sunday’s Times, folded open to the crossword, fully filled in with anal-retentive ink, annotated with a cryptic "18 m" along the margin. A Patricia Cornwell novel. The Complete Works of Gaius Petronius. An egg of Silly Putty. A water pistol realistically modeled after a police handgun. Two empty burrito wrappers. The Washington Blade, opened to the personals, dotted with red balloons and doodles of flowers. A necktie dotted with goldfish and tomato stains, still loosely noosed.
Is this me? Mulder thought.

FOOTNOTES
"Arystar Krory" is Hoshino-sensei's take on the name of infamous English occultist Aleister Crowley, and should probably be pronounced as such. The katakana spelling is アレイスター・クロウリ areisutaa kurouri. I am begging you to read the linked wiki; Crowley was a very colourful character. [ ♠ ]
Mircea Eliade was a writer and religious historian from the same era as Crowley. Please also read this wiki, Eliade's work was fascinating (especially the bits about theophany, encounters with or observable manifestations of God). I would really love to know if Hoshino's actually read any translations of his work; I would not be at all surprised if she has. [ ♠ ]

It is a well-known fact that through their creations artists often anticipate what is to come-sometimes one or two generations later-in other sectors of social and cultural life.

“There is a body of ritual and teaching which is supposed to bring about a decisive change in the status and aftitude of the novices. In those "rites de passage," a boy is separated from his mother and passes through a series of ordeals that take him from childhood and bring him to adulthood. He becomes a responsible member of his tribe. The initiation marks the end of a period of life and the beginning of a new phase, a vita nova. The highlights of the mystery - if the paradoxical expression is permissible - are the rites of "death and resurrection," as Frazer and other anthropologists call the drama, or as it is otherwise named, of "death and rebirth." Characterization of the rites makes us see that there is no contradiction between those two descriptions. For the primitive mentality, initiatory death provides the clean slate on which will be written the successive revelations whose end is the formation of a new man. Mirca Eliade, whose recent book deals with the religious meaning of initiation, points to the primitive belief that a state of being cannot be changed unless the previous form of existence is first annihilated. Therefore, death in the initiation is indispensable for beginning a new life. It is remarkable, however, that in many primitive tribes the symbol of this initiatory death is darkness or night, sometimes the belly of a monster or even of a womb.” - Theodor Reik, ‘The Creation of Woman’ (1960) [pages 88, 89]

Time in Goncharov (1973)
Time in Goncharov (1973) is partially about the concept(s) of the Eternal Return.
Everything has already happened before and it will all happen again, forever. It’s a cyclical and cosmic trap from witch Goncharov tries to escape; the film is basically about him trying to escape the illusion of existence (Maya/Samsara) and attain enlightenment or divine liberation (Moksha).
At the same time, there is the Eliadian concept of the Eternal Return (the idea that One wants to go back to the original state of divine bliss, before the beginning of everything). This is why the characters in the film are so nostalgic about their past (Eliade wrote about the ‘nostalgia of the origins’); they basically want to go back to the divine bliss that they were in before they were born into the physical trap of material existence...
More on this later!
