LUCIANO ROSSETTI: VENT’ANNI DI NOVARA JAZZ E ALTRI SCATTI (parte II)

(segue) Naturalmente, tra le foto di Luciano Rossetti esposte in occasione della XX edizione del Festival, ognuno di noi potrebbe scegliere quella più vicino al proprio sentire (o al proprio vedere), qualcuno potrebbe essere affezionato ad un particolare concerto o ad un musicista tra i tanti che si sono esibiti a Novara in questi venti (brevissimi) anni. E così non mi sottrarrò al gioco di scegliere la fotografia alla quale sono emotivamente più vicino. La fotografa è certamente quella di Jaimie Branch scattata da Luciano Rossetti nel novembre del 2018 nel concerto di Jaimie al Piccolo Coccia di Novara. Perché? Naturalmente non solo perché Jaimie Branch è prematuramente e improvvisamente scomparsa qualche anno fa, ma perché la fotografia mostra una difficoltà, quella di comprendere davvero la personalità di questa magnifica trombettista di Huntington (NY). La fotografia la ritrae in primo piano, anzi in secondo piano rispetto alla sua tromba, che è in primissimo piano e appare un po’ sfuocata. La fronte di Jaimie è imperlata di sudore, porta il consueto copricapo di lana pesante e l’immancabile tuta sportiva un po’ macilenta, una “mise” in perfetta consonanza col luogo dove viveva (Brooklyn). Ma Jaimie sembra celarsi dietro la tromba o forse svelarsi con essa. Ma nella mostra ci sono altre foto che sono anche tappe in un ideale percorso nel festival novarese, come quella del 2009 che ritrae Roberto Ottaviano con Han Bennink che più che un batterista sembra essere un voce di un coro gospel. Per venire a scatti più recenti mi piace ricordare la fotografia del contrabbassista Ernst Reijseger al termine di un memorabile concerto in solo nella Basilica di San Gaudenzio mentre si appresta a lasciare la scena contornato da un ambiente vorticosamente sfuocato che rende palpabile non solo il movimento del musicista, ma evoca mirabilmente il turbinio dei suoni ancora nell’aria dopo il concerto. Sono altresì molto affezionato alla foto del grande pianista e compositore Alexander Hawkins e al suo divertito sorriso dopo il concerto in solo nella corte di Casa Bossi nel 2021, dove la laccatura del pianoforte contrasta fortemente col muro scrostato della casa. Non è un’impresa di poco conto descrivere con le parole una fotografia, soprattutto se si tratta di fotografie pregne di senso come queste di Luciano Rossetti che prima dello straordinario solo di contrabbasso di Adam Pultz-Melbye mi ha fatto dono di un catalogo di una sua precedente mostra a Seriate (Bg) del 2020? In quel catalogo sono raccolte fotografie scattate in giro per il mondo a grandi personalità del jazz come Arvo Pärt, Wadada Leo Smith, Peter Brötzman, John Patitucci, Michel Petrucciani, Butch Morris, Lee Konitz, citando così un po’ a caso. Anche qui tra le tante foto, qualcuna, per qualche misterioso motivo, resta nell’anima, forse per quello che Roland Barthes ne “La camera chiara”, chiamava il “punctum” di una fotografia, ovvero quel punto misterioso, non necessariamente il più gerarchicamente significativo di uno scatto, ma quello dal quale non si riesce a distogliere lo sguardo. E non può non restare nell’anima, quel piccolo spazio tra due trombe che si fronteggiano, quella di Gabriele Mitelli e quella di Rob Mazurek immersi al tramonto nel mare nei pressi di Masainas in Sardegna nel 2018. Un momento di poesia catturato da Luciano Rossetti e che mi piace serbare nel cuore e condividere con Voi (e con lui).

Ernst Reijseger & Alan 'Gunga' Purves, 'TA!' CD (Nimbus West Records)

'Cello and Scotch Tape', one of this duo's earlier discs, is one of my favourite albums of Dutch free improv; it's, strangely, a heavily groove-oriented collection of pieces by two supple and playful musicians that I return to semi-often. This disc seems mostly cover a lot of the same ground as that album, but the recording quality is a bit middling, without a lot of juice (the other album is quite great-sounding in a kind of charmingly hackneyed way), so it doesn't quite grab one as much. Also, this disc seems to present a full concert, and as such it's less succinct and comes across a bit more like a sampling platter of their predilections, rather than the other album, which, while still quite diverse, benefits from a certain focus lacking herr; still, a worthy and potent document of these two masters, and if I hadn't heard the other one first, I'd probably be equally gobsmacked by this one.
