Song Review: Midnight North feat. Amy Helm and Brian Lesh - “Songlines” (Live, Nov. 10, 2023)

“Songlines” is a tune that wants to strut. But as a balladic shuffle about a fractured family, it is unable to do so.

Borrowing sounds from the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band, Midnight North wrote and recorded the song with Amy Helm and performed it live on Nov. 10, 2023, with Helm on co-lead vocals and a guesting Brian Lesh on guitar. The second-generation band sounded sweet as Helm - daughter of Levon - sang in harmony with Elliott Peck and Grahame Lesh - son of Phil - on the chorus:

Pass the lyric down to a troubled heart/broken choir sings to light up the dark/where’s your brother now, where does he stay/and the songlines remain

It almost works splendidly. But with its somewhat-clunky lyrics and restrained melody, “Songlines” comes off as more of a promising work in progress as opposed to a finished track. Yet, with Leshes and a Helm involved, evolution is possible if not inevitable.

Multimediale Rauminszenierungen im Dialog mit einer über 60.000 Jahren alten Kultur: Der nächsten Sonderausstellung im Humboldt Forum liegt ein besonderes kuratorisches Modell zugrunde. Songlines: Sieben Schwestern erschaffen Australien wurde unter der Leitung von Margo Neale, Senior Indigenous Curator des National Museum of Australia, Canberra, ausschließlich von Vertreter*innen Indigener Communities konzipiert und kuratiert. Mit einem innovativen multimedialen Ausstellungsdesign, zeitgenössischer Kunst und Performance erzählen sie eine der zentralen Schöpfungsgeschichten des australischen Kontinents neu. Die Sonderausstellung Songlines: Sieben Schwestern erschaffen Australien bietet eine sinnliche Begegnung mit der einzigartigen Kultur, den Tänzen und Gesängen, Bildern und Objekten, mit denen Indigene Communities ihrem Verhältnis zur Natur und Landschaft, zu ihrem Land Ausdruck verleihen. Workshop Spaces, Filmtage und Gastspiele mit Indigenen Künstlerinnen sowie Führungen ergänzen das Programm. Die Ausstellung beruht auf einem zehnjährigen Forschungsprojekt zur Bewahrung Indigenen Wissens, das von Vertreterinnen Indigener Communities in Zusammenarbeit mit dem National Museum of Australia und der Australian National University initiiert und geleitet wurde.

Zur Bedeutung der Songlines

Songlines sind epische Indigene Erzählungen, die für die Entstehung des australischen Kontinents von grundlegender Bedeutung sind. Als kulturelle Routen durchziehen sie das Land und bilden ein Netz von Geschichten, die die Aktivitäten der Schöpfungswesen in ganz Australien „kartografieren“. Durch Gesänge, Erzählungen, zeremonielle Darbietungen oder Felskunst überliefern Songlines kulturelle Werte sowie religiöses und ökologisches Wissen von Generation zu Generation. Als Wissenssystem halten sie die Rechte Indigener Australier*innen an ihrem Land wie auch ihre Verantwortung fest, für dieses Land zu sorgen und es zu bewahren.

Die Erzählung der Sieben Schwestern

Im Zentrum der Erzählung: Sieben Schwestern, die sich einem männlichen Verfolger mit magischen Fähigkeit listenreich entziehen. Ihre Reise führt sie von australischen Wüste ins Universum: Auf der Flucht vor ihrem formwandelnden Verfolger durchqueren die Frauen drei Wüsten und fliegen schließlich in den Himmel, wo sich ihre Geschichte im Sternbild des Orion und der Plejaden widerspiegelt. Eine Art multimediales „Firmament“, der eigens für die Ausstellung entwickelte multimediale Kuppelraum, erlaubt ein mehrdimensionales Erleben der erzählten Geschichten und der von ihnen eröffneten Wissens- und Erfahrungswelten. Bis zu 30 Personen können hier im Sitzen oder Liegen virtuell nach Walinynga (Cave Hill) reisen und diese seltene Felskunststätte der Sieben Schwestern in einer 360-Grad-Ansicht erleben.

Der Ausstellungsparcours

Der Ausstellungsparcours ist somit selbst erlebbar wie eine Reise, die wie eine große imaginative Karte auf dem Boden eingeschrieben ist. Die Besucherinnen folgen der Route der Sieben Schwestern durch Gemälde und Objekte, Fotografien, Filme und Installationen. Begrüßt werden sie dabei von den sogenannten Virtual Elders, lebensgroßen Videos der Mitgliederinnen des Indigenen Kuratoriums. Margo Neale, Senior Indigenous Curator, National Museum of Australia: „In diesem großen Drama voller Intrigen, Geheimnisse und Schönheit geht es um Leidenschaft und Gefahren der Schöpfung, Begehren, Liebe, Flucht und Überleben. Wie alle universellen Erzählungen dieser Art hat sie im Laufe der Zeit nichts von ihrer Relevanz eingebüßt. Ihre Lehren sind auch heute noch von entscheidender Bedeutung für Bewegungen wie Black Lives Matter, Me-Too und andere Umwelt- und Klimabewegungen. Indigene Australier*innen haben diesen Kontinent seit mehr als 60 000 Jahren nachhaltig bewirtschaftet. Doch nur 250 Jahre nach der britischen Ankunft befindet er sich in einem kritischen Zustand. Wie kommt das? Die Antwort liegt in den Songlines.“

Das Vermittlungs- und Veranstaltungsprogramm

Ein gemeinsam mit dem National Museum of Australia entwickeltes Vermittlungs- und Veranstaltungsprogramm vertieft und erweitert die Themen der Ausstellung, die anschließend im Musée du Quai Branly in Paris gezeigt wird. Zur Eröffnung von Songlines sind eine Woche lang Indigene Kuratorinnen und Künstlerinnen der Ausstellung im Humboldt Forum zu Gast: In Künstler*innen-Workshops und Führungen ermöglichen sie einen persönlichen Einblick in die Geschichten und Objekte der Songlines-Ausstellung. Im Juni 2022 zeigt das Humboldt Forum populäre Filme Indigen- australischer Filmemacherinnen. Die Filme werden von Künstlerinnen, Kuratorinnen, Wissenschaftlerinnen und in anschließenden Gesprächen mit dem Publikum diskutiert. Im Oktober werden verschiedene künstlerische Positionen aktueller Indigener Performances und Theater-Installationen aus Australien im Humboldt Forum gezeigt und die Themen der Ausstellung in einem performativen Rahmen weitergeführt. In Auseinandersetzung mit den Medien Malerei, Performance, Film und Multimedia-Installationen werden in Führungen Indigenes Wissen und soziale Erfahrungen für ein internationales Publikum sichtbar. Für das Vermittlungsprogramm stellt das National Museum of Australia zudem Objekte bereit, die auf die Lebenswelt der vertretenen Communities und ihre Geschichten verweisen. Begleitend zur Ausstellung erscheint im Hirmer-Verlag ein umfangreicher Katalog (372 Seiten, 300 Abbildungen, 24,90 Euro). *Minor Spoilers* You have to know the overwhelming joy and love I feel when I discover that authors I loved during the Sherlock days have written Good Omens fic. It genuinely to me feels like coming home. So a reminder to all fic writers, your works will be remembered so fondly by so many even if it's been twelve years (!!!!!) after they've read it.

Crowley has tempted Aziraphale to a night of smoking the Devil's Lettuce. I loved the relationship to drugs they both have, of course they've tried them all! Why not! For most of their existence these substances haven't been criminalized. It's a great lighthearted scene that made me smile and want to smoke and eat Sushi with Aziraphale. Dream blunt rotation <3

What this writer has always done well is making smut fun. It can be hot and filthy, but also playful and joyful. There is so much love here! "Crowley is the All-Time Muff-Diving Champion" indeed! Also, as a broader praise for the Good Omens fandom, I am obsessed with how everyone plays with gender/efforts. There is so much variety and I am so thankful we can get any combination and it always works. It's honestly one of my favorite parts of our fandom.
