AO3 / FFN
Pairing - Ladynoir, Adrinette & Ladrien
Prompt - ‘Protect’
Summary -
"That's different!" Chat Noir snapped, eyes now watery. "That's different...because not once have I endangered a citizen like that. So tell me, why? Why are you acting like this? Why are you being so overprotective of me? Why are you being so reckless? What's going on!?" The distress and concern for the love of his life took over and the tears finally seeped down his mask, his shoulders trembling and his fangs digging into his bottom lip.
For a split second, all that Ladybug saw was white and the moon shattered in pieces.
She averted her gaze, not even budging when her partner slumped his head on her shoulder and brought her into his tight embrace. Her fists remained clenched against her sides, her mind flooded with nothing but blue and white and white and blue. "I'm selfish, that's why." Her quiet answer had the boy dart his head back to face her, eyebrows furrowed under the mask and emeralds glittering from shed tears. His heart tightened from the fatal storm he witnessed within her eyes, observing the harsh pain and suffering that dwelled deep within her soul. "I'll try my best to make sure no one else gets hurt again...but if I have to make a choice," Her next words made and broke him all at once. "I'll always choose you. Always."
~(x)~ . . . "How...how could you?" His icy tone was laced with venom and sheer betrayal, clawed fingers digging into his trembling palms in a white-knuckled grip and teeth clenched to the point where his jaw was close to clicking out of place. "How could you, Ladybug!?" His partner clad in red remained rooted on her spot, standing tall and unflinching despite their close proximity and the way he towered over her with his larger frame. Her stormy eyes continued to hold resolute and lacked any regret whatsoever, driving the feline hero absolutely insane. This time, raw desperation clouded the fury within his eyes and his hands shot to her shoulders, his grip firm enough so that she couldn't run away without a word. But not hard enough to hurt her. Never would he go out of his way to ever hurt his Ladybug. . "I saved you, that's what I did." She finally answered, her voice unwavering and cool and confident, baby blues gleaming like blistering ice under her mask and shadowed dangerously by her long lashes. It made her look apathetic and incredibly cold and Chat Noir absolutely hated it beyond comprehension. "Is that it? Can you let me go now? I have work to do back home," She shrugged off his hands effortlessly, not even acknowledging the bafflement plastered on his face. "That's it? No, no, no! You should have saved that civilian! Why did you choose to push me away from the akuma instead!? Mon Dieu...there was so much blood and-" "And?" Again, her curt, hardened answers were like blades tearing through his veins, making the flood of words in his mind dissipate instantly. "Besides, the cure fixed everything. No one got permanently hurt. Why is this such a big deal?" The lack of sympathy in her voice transitioned to one of pure fatigue and Chat Noir couldn't help but bring his hands back on her arms once more, pulling her closer towards him so that he can lean his forehead on hers. "Ladybug..." His emerald eyes were pleading yet full of confusion and tender concern. "Our job is to protect Paris and its citizens. It always has been. You should prioritise them over me, always!" Finally, a sharp gleam of anger flickered in her eyes and turned her blues into an inferno of rage, burning down the ice-cold front she wore seconds ago. "Who are you to say this to me!? Especially after all those times that you have sacrificed yourself in order to save me-" "That's different!" Chat Noir snapped, eyes now watery. Always." ~(x)~ "Wow...this character is so much more intense than I thought he'd be," Adrien mused out loud, placing the book he was reading down on the grass and shuffling further against the tree trunk so that he could fully relax. He flashed a silly, goofy little smile at his quiet companion who paused from working on her homework to glance at him with a soft grin of her own. It was just Adrien and Marinette who sat under the shade of the generous tree during their lunch break, the former more than pleased to have spent some one-on-one time with the latter even if it was just lounging in comfortable silence. The boy couldn't explain it in words (he didn't think that there were any in all the dictionaries in the world that could sum up his feelings) but her presence was just so comforting and just so peaceful and he couldn't help but unwind around her with ease. He hoped that the feelings were mutual for her with him but judging by the distant, cheerless look in her eyes as she observed their surroundings in the park and the lack of energy in her tiny frame, she was not loosening up at all. He could only internally pray to whatever reliable gods or higher powers out there for an inkling of an idea or advice or anything he could do to alleviate her deep bereavement and get her to smile that sweet grin she used to wear in what felt like centuries ago. "Hey, Marinette~?" He tried to act charming and cute, resting a chin on her slim shoulder and fluttering his long lashes. A playful smirk was quick to play on his lips when she raised an amused (and very attractive) brow at him. "How far would you go for the person you love?" He gestured towards the book, indicating that the ruthless main character inspired his bizarre question. He expected a pretty blush and her cheeks turning to that beautiful sakura colour whenever she was quite flustered around him. He expected a ramble of words, perhaps jumbled up together in a soup which often had him have to use his brain to decipher (well, the remaining brain cells that weren't occupied by her adorable features). He even expected a quippy, sassy response or even an endeared roll of eyes. . He didn't expect the melancholy to come back by tenfolds, her baby blues dimming and her skin ashen. Adrien lifted his head back up, not knowing what else to do other than place his hands on top of hers and willing to give her an ounce of comfort with all his might. "Who knows...maybe I'd destroy the moon and flood the entire world," Marinette whispered as if she just spilt the biggest secret of her entire life. When she met his gaping, bewildered expression, she forced a smile back on her face and squeezed his hand. "Got you~ that was just a joke, Adrien. You should have seen your face," . Though he wore a matching grin to put Marinette at ease, the boy couldn't help but internally decipher that her answer was the key to her sadness... ~(x)~ "No!!!" Chat Noir snapped out of his brooding, forlorn state on the abandoned rooftop, misery immediately replaced with attentiveness by the sound of a familiar (very, very familiar) voice of raw defiance. First, he saw a horrified Marinette speeding across the tiles on the roof a few buildings away from him. Then, he saw her encased in a bright light of brilliant red and white. ZOOOOOOM! And then her yoyo snatched the despicable yet sneaky dark butterfly right in front of his face, the tool almost grazing his nose. . All that the boy could hear was his own heartbeat pounding intensely within his shivering frame, a high-pitched ringing insistent within both sets of his ears as he observed his Lady purify the terrifying butterfly with a rage so mighty, he could feel the fire radiating from her as if she was the sun. "Chaton! Hey! Chat Noir! Hey!" She pulled him down to her height by cupping his face desperately with both of her strong hands, her frightened blues glittering with absolute concern and fear for her pouvre partner. "Who hurt you!?" Chat Noir remained mute, severely overwhelmed to the point of buckling to his knees and falling into her open arms with his whole body shaking and shivering and trembling. "Oh, mon Chaton. I'm so sorry, so, so sorry. I couldn't protect you and your smile, oh," All he could do as she sobbed into his golden hair was silently grip her body tight towards him and cry wordlessly in the comfort of her chest where all he could hear was the beating of her heart of gold. ~(x)~ Thirty-nine butterflies. Ladybug had caught and purified at least thirty-nine butterflies that cold, bitter night as Adrien continued to soundlessly break down within her arms on her balcony, his hands clawing at her suit and his tears soaking her neck and hair. The heroine did everything she could to tame the brutally ferocious, outraged dragon within her, the shrieking monster wanting nothing more than the blood of Le Papillon splattered all over her hands and the delicious shatter of his bones beneath her feet and his vile head rolling on the floor. To bring him back to life and then kill him over and over and over again in the most torturous and excruciatingly painful ways no mortal would be able to comprehend. How dare he go after her beloved partner? How dare he continue to send his treacherous insects after him one after the other? And... How dare he choose to terrorise the world over protecting the one person he should love as much as she does? . "Marinette...I'm okay now...I'm so, so sorry for breaking down like this and not being strong enough-" Adrien's sombre words were halted by his partner kissing his tears away tenderly and her hands lovingly stroking his messy, dishevelled hair and her fingers soothing the tense muscles on his stiff shoulders. "You did nothing wrong. You never did anything wrong, mon Minou. You're too good, too precious, too wonderful for this world," She pressed a searing kiss on his forehead, bringing him as close as possible on her lap so that she could pepper more comforting kisses on his face. His tears continued to stream down his face as she kept vigilant for any more akuma butterflies that dared to make their way towards them again. Her mind was a maelstrom. Chat Blanc was making more and more sense and the burning, agonising fury against her Chaton's horrific excuse of a father was a hellfire that coursed within her veins. She needs to destroy that monster. She needs to tear him apart. All so that her partner never has to experience such pain ever, ever again- "Hey, I'm okay now," He pulled back much to her dismay, slipping off her lap and taking all the soothing warmth away with him. However, when he flashed a genuine smile (albeit timid and small), the affection came infusing back into her system. "Can you detransform? Please? I want to see you, Marinette," He held onto her hands protectively, bringing them to his chest. She unravelled her transformation wordlessly only to let out a quiet grunt when he pulled her into his arms in a manner that made her believe that he was never going to let her go (and she definitely didn't mind if that were to be the case). She couldn't help but melt into his touch as he stroked her hair with his fingers and inhaled her scent greedily. "As hectic as today was, I'm so, so happy it's you," He murmured happily into her dark locks, lips trailing from the midnight strands to her supple cheek. "You're the silver lining to all of this," His satiny soft lips then paused at the corner of hers. "Thank you," . She met him halfway with her own lips. ~(x)~ One snoozing Adrien was gently tucked into her bed, Tikki sweetly snuggled next to him so that she could keep an eye out for any more butterflies waiting to attack him in his sleep. Marinette delivered a tender peck on his peachy pink lips, lightly smiling to herself when his body fully relaxed after her touch (both of them sporting kiss-bruised lips from their spontaneous and very enthusiastic kissing not too long ago). She stepped away from her now peaceful Chaton and nodded to Plagg, the little God more than aware of what plans were being concocted within her head. "This ends tonight. He shall never hurt him again," Marinette vowed, earning a pleased nod from her tiny companion. "Say the words kid. Let's go and give that monster hell." "Plagg! Transforme-moi!" . . . ~(x)~

Miraculous, Simply The Best (Ch. 2)
Ch. 2: What Is Up With Ladybug?
Summary: Chat wonders why his partner has been so... nervous and fidget-y around him, lately.
Yes, I somehow shockingly posted a second chapter the day after the first one, but after the initial reception to the first chapter as a stand-alone, I decided I should probably just post the first two or three chapters this week and THEN transition to a weekly schedule. It'll also help me get a grasp on how much people like it and where the story is headed. I DO have a plan for how this is going to end and a lot of plot points/middle bits, but I'm still working out some details as I go, so.
Anyways, there's a ton of Ladynoir in this chapter! Plus we get a slight bit more insight into the main conflicts we're gonna be looking at in this fic. I don't touch on all of the main conflicts, but we're definitely dipping our toes here. Enjoy!
You can also read this on my ao3 or my ffn. But if not, then just:
Ch. 2: What Is Up With Ladybug?
Adrien couldn’t stop thinking about that night.
The one where Hawkmoth took all the miraculous.
I mean, not necessarily that I’m all that worried about Hawkmoth, Adrien thought, as he packed up his stuff and waved bye to Nino.
It had nothing to do with him. It had already been six months since then, and they had already gotten so many of the miraculous back. They even got the snake! That was a hard one, for sure. Adrien zipped up his bag and tossed it over his shoulder, heading outside.
No, he meant what he said that night. He knew that, together, they would defeat Hawkmoth one day. He was no match for them. He just couldn’t get her out of his head. I mean, she was-
“Wow, it’s Ladybug!” He heard a small child shout from across the street.
He whipped his head in the opposite direction of where the Gorilla was waiting for him, and saw her swinging from her yo-yo string across a building, in the direction of where there seemed to be a giant green plant monster straight out of Avatar: The Last Airbender wreaking havoc on some innocent buildings.
Oh, crap.
He quickly tossed his bag into the Gorilla’s arms, spluttered out some half-assed excuse about having a stomach ache, and ran like hell back into the school, as many students were running out.
She had been so weird since that night. Aside from breaking down crying into his arms several times, breaking his heart, because she felt so guilty about the miraculous being stolen by that stupid butterfly man, she was just acting very strange lately.
He had always loved her, he thought, as he ran into the closest locker room and called out Plagg for his transformation.
He still loved her. But when she had told him last year that she was an interested, and he had noticed that she had been going through some personal emotional stuff-
That she decided not to share with me… Adrien grumbled, in his head, still somewhat bitter about that-
He had decided to leave her alone and respect her feelings. If they were going to be together one day, she wanted it to be because she was in her right mind and was ready to commit to him. Not because he pressured her into it like a jerk.
Adrien, now as Chat Noir, launched himself out of the window he had just pried open, and leapt after his lady.
But he supposed that that was nearly nine months ago, how. She’d been acting differently since that night. She even stumbles over her words and has actually been blushing when he flirts with her.
Maybe there was hope for them? He wondered.
“Where have you been, Chat?” Ladybug demanded, breaking him out of his thoughts. “I’ve been holding this guy off for like 20 minutes already.”
“Sorry, lovebug,” He replied, sheepishly, and flirtatiously, whacking the plant guy with his staff as his arm came towards her. “I was a bit busy.”
She sighed, ignoring his ‘lovebug’ comment in a way she wouldn’t normally, and turned back towards the monster, tangling it up in her yo-yo. “Well, at least you’re here now.”
Or maybe he was reading too far into it. He wasn’t sure, if he was being honest with himself. He had wrongly assumed she might have liked him back when they were 14, and he just ended up embarrassing himself. Besides there was the also the issue that he was experiencing some conflicting feelings for-
No, he needed to focus. He had an akuma to fight.
“So, what’s this guy’s deal, M’lady?” Chat asked, as he and Ladybug chased after the giant plant monster. “Not-” Ladybug yelped and dodged a blast of his powers, which seemed to either turn people into plants, or turn plants into sentient creatures he could control. “Ugh. Not entirely sure. Something about environmental activism? But I can’t find an akumatized object. It might be underneath the plants of his body.”
“Hmm… then the usual plan?”
“Seems like.” Chat grinned, and launched himself onto the monster’s head. He bent over so he was looking upside down into its giant blue eye. “Hey, Swampbutt. What’s your problem?”
The monster roared, speaking in a deep and booming male voice. “My name is not Swampbutt! It’s Aloe du Spectre!”
Aloe du Spectre or whatever his name was swatted at his face, trying to smack Chat Noir, who just kept crawling around like a cat. It roared again, slamming into several buildings while it struggled to catch him. Chat could see Ladybug swinging below, obviously trying to figure out a plan. Her thinking face was cute, with the way she always knotted her eyebrows together.
“But you didn’t answer my question, Aloe-head.” Chat scoffed.
“Aloe-head?” Ladybug mouthed to him, incredulously.
Chat grinned bigger, shrugging in a ‘I couldn’t think of something better’ kind of way. She rolled her eyes. “I asked what your problem was. Why are you turning people into plants?”
The monster growled, finally knocking Chat off his face. Like any decent cat, he landed gracefully on his feet on the roof of a building 2-3 stories below.
“Nobody took my research seriously!” Aloe du Spectre roared again, trying to grab Ladybug who was running by his feet. “I just wanted to help decrease Paris’ carbon footprint. But the mayor refused to fund my green architecture project. Hawkmoth understands me though, and he’s gonna help me paint the whole city green!”
“Weird thought process, but okay.” Chat quipped. “You know we’re gonna stop you though, right?”
The monster slammed its foot on the ground hard, making everything shake and knocking Chat over. Oof.
“Just give me your miraculous and I’ll make sure to turn you into a nice plant, cat boy. How about some catnip?”
Chat couldn’t help but laugh. “Ha, good o- ah!”
His laughter was cut off by a yelp as the monster smacked him off the building. As he fell, he tried to grab his staff before realizing he had dropped it off the otherside of the building. Before he could even begin to think of a Plan B, he heard a zipping noise, and found himself falling into Ladybug’s arms.
“My hero~” He swooned, making kitty-cat eyes at Ladybug. She looked down at him, wide-eyed, and whipped her head back, before dropping him close to the ground and leaping up to fight the monster. Adrien could’ve sworn the tips of her ears were pink.
“Very funny, Aloe du Spectre. But, as you and your stupid boss may know, I haven’t given up these earrings before, and I don’t intend to do it now.” She whipped her yo-yo at Aloe du Spectre, and it managed to go underneath his vine-y exterior before flying back at her, knocking her down.
She rubbed her head and then met eyes with Chat. He raised his eyebrows. “Oh, so it is just like Avatar.”
“Seems like. Which means his akumatized item must be underneath the vines. I suspect possibly in the middle.”
“Lucky charm time?” Chat asked, as soon as the monster started charging off, towards Mayor Bourgeois’ hotel.
“Yup.” She answered, before jumping up to her feet and raising her yo-yo towards the sky.
“Lucky Charm!” Ladybug called out, before a pair of garden shears fell into her hands.
“Garden shears?” He asked, incredulously. “Wouldn’t a machete have been better?”
Ladybug shrugged, her pigtails bouncing. “I don’t make the rules, I guess.”
“Well, do you have a plan?”
Suddenly, a shriek that could definitely only have been a pissed-off Chloe Bourgeois sounded off in the background, towards the hotel.
“No, but I guess I’ll figure it out once we get there. Let’s move!” She declared, swinging off into action.
***
Once they arrived at the hotel, they found the Aloe du Spectre holding Mayor Bourgeois in his hands. “Ladybug! Chat Noir! Thank goodness!” Andre cried, clearly desperately trying to escape Aloe du Spectre’s grasp.
“Don’t worry, Mayor Bourgeois!” Ladybug yelled up towards him. “We’re gonna get you down as soon as possible!”
“No, you won’t!” The monster yelled, slamming his other fist down onto the hotel, sending some rubble down towards the superhero duo. Chat wrapped his arm around Ladybug’s waist, and used his staff to propel the two of them up and away from the debris, onto the roof of the hotel, by the pool.
“Yes, we will!” Ladybug shouted, grabbing her yo-yo and flinging herself down in a kick to the monster, her superhero-enhanced strength combined with the force of the jump making the kick quite powerful, making the monster stumble and drop the mayor.
Andre screamed, and Adrien flung himself towards him with his staff, catching the mayor just in time. He safely placed him into the doorway towards the penthouse, where Chloe, her half-sister Zoe, and Sabrina were waiting.
“Daddy!” Chloe exclaimed, grabbing onto her father.
“Guys, you should definitely evacuate the building. This akuma is huge and I think you’d be much safer hiding at ground level.” Chat told them, in his best superhero voice.
Chloe rolled her eyes, challenging him. “And who are you to tell me what to do? Ladybug? I’d rather stay right here! This is my hotel, after all.”
Chat scowled, annoyed by his friend. “Zoe?”
Zoe chuckled, ushering the other three down the stairs. “On it.”
“Hey!” He heard Chloe shriek before Zoe slammed the door.
He turned his attention back to Ladybug and Aloe du Spectre. She was trying to knock him down and restrain him with her yo-yo but it seemed to be proving difficult against a 20-story tall plant monster. But, as soon as Chat tried to rush over and help, Ladybug was swatted over and flung towards him.
He opened his arms to catch her, but she slammed into him, knocking them both to the ground. As she landed on top of him, they both rolled over, eventually turning Chat over on top of her, as he tried to hold her closer, protectively, and their faces were knocked closer together, making their lips slightly touch.
Chat’s brain short-circuited and he was sure that his entire face turned bright red. But when he looked down at Ladybug, her entire face was red, too.
“Um, I’m-” She stuttered. “I- Me-”
“I’m so sorry, LB!” Chat shrieked, sitting up as soon as he could, gently pushing her off. “I didn’t mean to!”
“Oh-okay, um, it’s-!”
He helped her up, but she looked away, with her hand held firmly against the bottom half of her face. Her skin matched her suit, and even her ears were bright red. Huh?
“Well, let’s get the akuma! You should him chest cataclysm! I mean, uh, you should! Cataclysm! His chest! The monster!” She blurted, waving her hands animatedly in a way that definitely reminded him of someone he couldn’t quite put his finger on.
“Um… okay.” He said, blinking. “But what about the charm?”
“I saw an amulet under his vines while I fought him. I think the garden shears were to snap the pendant free.”
Slowly, Chat nodded, and reluctantly ran into action. But as he cataclysmed Aloe du Spectre, he could think of nothing but how much he rather liked the idea that he might have made her blush like that.
***
Hawkmoth slammed his cane against the wall of his lair in anger, roaring out in frustration and creating a rather large hole in the drywall.
“Gabriel?” Nathalie asked, from the facetime open on his tablet nearby.
He growled in annoyance. Those annoying little brats. They had foiled him once again. He had been so confident ever since that night that they stole the rest of the miraculous, but he just kept losing.
He sighed, in despair, dropping to his knees in front of Emilie’s glass coffin. He had failed her yet again.
“Sir?” Nathalie’s voice jarred him out of his thoughts.
“Yes, yes, what is it, Nathalie? Can’t you see that I’m not in the best mood right now?”
“I know, Gabriel. I’m on your side.” She reassured him gently, through the video call. “But maybe we’re approaching things all wrong. Maybe instead of focusing on bombarding them with akumas and dark miraculous users in the hopes Ladybug may once have a bad day, why don’t we try to pick up on their weaknesses?”
“Their weaknesses? Nathalie, you don’t think I’ve already thought of that? I told you, Ladybug only made the one mistake when I stole the miraculous earlier this year.”
“No, sir.” Nathalie clarified. “Not their mistakes. Their weaknesses.”
Gabriel shifted, standing up and picking up the tablet, looking at Nathalie, from where she sat in her bed on the camera. “Go on.”
***
After the akuma victim, an architect and botanist from Nice who was trying to convince the mayor to approve plans to refurbish some newer Parisian skyscrapers to be covered in lush greenery and run on solar panels, was assisted and pointed in the direction of Mayor Bourgeois, who decided to hear him out, Chat and Ladybug were alone once more.
Adrien knew he had to talk to her. He had to know why she’s been responding to him so differently lately. He-
“Well!” Ladybug shouted, suddenly, before Chat could even turn to her and ask to speak. “Pound it, Chat!”
She grabbed his hand, formed it into a fist, and made him artificially fist bump her.
“Uh- pound it, My Lady, but-” He began, only to be caught off.
“Sorry, Chat! Gotta run! My earrings are beeping!” Just as she said, her earrings beeped once with perfect timing. “Bye!”
“Wait!” Chat shouted, grabbing her hand.
She froze, turning to look at him, but seemed very nervous, looking away almost immediately at literally anything else, her cheeks getting that pink twinge again. As much as he enjoyed the idea that it might be because of him, he also wanted to make sure he wasn’t accidentally making her uncomfortable.
“What’s up?” She said, clearly trying to be as nonchalant as possible. It wasn’t really working.
“What’s with you?” He asked, letting go of her wrist.
“What do you mean?” She responded, fiddling with her soft, raven-feather-colored pigtails. She looked up at him innocently, with those big, bluebell eyes. Chat’s heart skipped a beat. God, she is so cu-
Focus!
“I think you know what I mean.” He said, trying to sound as stern but gentle as possible. “You’ve been acting really weird and fidget-y around me.”
“What?” She said, raising her eyebrows. “ME? Ladybug? No! I’m not being weird.”
“Please, Ladybug.” He pleaded, grasping her hands gently, and looking her straight into those beautiful, cerulean eyes. “Please just tell me if I did something wrong. You’ve been acting this way for months. I thought we had worked through our issues back in the beginning of the year.”
Ladybug fidgeted, clearly affected by his begging. She sighed, lifting one hand to caress his cheek (Oh, God, I never want to forget how it feels when she caresses my cheek-), and squeezing his gloved hands with the other one. His heart was beating fast in his chest.
“Oh, Chat.” She sighed out. “I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. You haven’t done anything wrong. You’re right. I- I’ve been weird. I’m sorry.”
Chat lifted up one of his hands to hold the one of hers caressing his cheek. He relished the moments she was physically affectionate with him. “But what’s going on? Is something wrong?”
She sighed again, tucking one of his loose strands of hair behind his ears. “I’ve just had a lot on my mind, is all. You’ve just-”
Suddenly she looked into his eyes and turned fully red, seeming to have just become aware of herself and the intimate touch between them. She snatched her hands back quickly, covering her mouth momentarily. Chat’s heart mourned the loss of her hands on his cheeks.
“I mean, I’ve just maybe forgotten that I can rely on you sometimes. I just got thrown off earlier with…” He didn’t think it was possible, but Ladybug’s cheeks turned even redder under her mask, bright enough to match it. “That thing that accidentally happened earlier. That’s all.”
Adrien sighed. Maybe he was actually just overthinking. But he felt a bit relieved that she wasn’t mad at him.
“So... you don’t hate me?” He asked, giving her the fake kitten eyes.
“Oh. My God.” She laughed, a real laugh for the first time in a while, and shoved him away playfully. He must have had the stupidest lovesick grin on his face. He loved the sound of that laugh more than anything in the entire world.
They sat messing around and giggling there for a moment before her earrings beeped again, at the same time as his ring.
“I guess I actually have to go now.” She said, getting up from where she had been sitting. “I have some math homework to do tonight, anyway.”
“Huh, me too.” He nodded, before looking at his ring. “Hey, have you noticed we seem to have more time before detransforming lately?”
“Yes, I have noticed that.” She nodded, touching her earrings passively. “I guess we’re just growing up.”
“Growing up?” He asked, looking at her quizzically, offering her his hands in a ‘help’ gesture.
“Well, yeah,” she explained, rolling her eyes and helping him up. “Master Fu told me that once we become adults, we probably won’t ever detransform involuntarily unless we get seriously hurt in battle. We only had a time limit on the miraculous because we were kids. But as we get older, we’ll have more time and more control over our powers.”
“Woah…” Chat gasped, looking at his gloved hands before animatedly jumping up and grasping hers again, with stars in his eyes. “Do you think we’ll get cool new powers, too?!”
She laughed, but then seemed to think about. “I… don’t actually know. I guess I could check the grimoire.”
“Oh, hell yeah!” Chat exclaimed. “I hope I can like… make an explosion with my hand and point it at someone! Like in Dragon Ball!”
“I highly doubt it works like that, you weeb.” She laughed, ruffling his hair, before she turned towards the horizon. “Anyway, I actually really have to go. But I’ll see you on patrol tomorrow night?”
“Of course! Unless another akuma attacks, in which case, I’ll see you sooner.”
“Please don’t speak that into existence.”
Chat laughed. “Bye, buginette.”
“Bye, minou.”
He waved as she leapt off into the distance, watching her for a moment, before leaping off himself in the opposite direction. He really did love her so much.
Which is why he felt all the more guilty that he had been thinking all day, every day, about his classmate, Marinette.
“They’re both out of your league, anyway,” Plagg told him later that night, once they were both getting ready for bed. He yawned. Yeah… I guess so.
***
Unbeknownst to Adrien, though, as he got into bed that night, he was being watched, as well. By that same, tall figure.

20 Questions: Writer’s Edition
Thanks, @kasienda!
I was going to do this any way but its nice to be asked.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
24
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
103908
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Four if you count AUs.
Tenchi Muyo (GXP)(WIP)
Miraculous (24) with AUs in BHA and Spirited Away
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Something There That Wasn't There Before: Post Reveal Post Relationship seen from Nino's PoV.
Square Dance: Magical split personality Love Square shenanigans.
Flash of Insight: Alya PoV at the end of Gang of Secrets
The Very Best Butter: Alex gets her Miraculous.
The Education of Luka Couffaine: My first long fic to get to completion.
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Always. Comments are a gift, I like to leave a thank you.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Easy peasy, Home is Where the Heart Is: Rips your heart out and stomps it to pulp in just 581 words.
7. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
That's harder. It’s a Beautiful New Day! is pure fluff end to end and leaves the .
8. Do you write crossovers? If yes, what’s the craziest thing you’ve written?
Not yet, just inspired AUs. Though one might be crossover material. (the BHA one).
9. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
I don't think so though I got one very... odd comment on And Now for Something Completely Different.
10. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Not outside my own head, but I do try to make T stand for tantalizing.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No :(
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
Not yet! It would be fun though. The closest I've got is contributing to the @alwaysandforeverzine which is structured as an in world magazine with articles about the LadyNoir and Adrienette weddings. This meant I had to fit my story into a shared chronology. Preorders open to 30 Nov 2021.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
After myself and my wife, 🤔 The one that has stuck with me the longest since I first read A Princess of Mars when i was 5-6 is Dejah Thoris and John Carter.

Misery Loves Company. I started it almost 15 years ago on FFN and I'm still stuck in the same place.
16. What’s your writing strengths?
People tell me its description and character.
17. What’s your writing weaknesses?
My dysgraphia. It makes everything so much harder. It's such a struggle to just get words out that I rarely have much slack in my stories or energy to revise.
18. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic?
Only when the thought does not translate or to show when some one is hearing a different language. I use Japanese honorifics with Japanese speakers because English doesn't work the same way.
19. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Misery Loves Company for Tenchi Muyo:GXP. It was something to do in the middle of the night while I tried to get my baby son to sleep.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
Like picking your favorite child.
The Education of Luka Couffaine probably as my longest and most complicated story structurally and thematically. I have an 89 song 6 and a half hour play list that goes with it to capture all of the song references. I can't write Luka PoV with out a bunch of songs.
I'm offering a fic request to anyone who comes up with a good guess at the content of the playlist.
Taging @sing-in-me-oh-muse, @gale-gentlepenguin, @chocoluckchipz, @graaythekwami and anyone else who wants to play.

Day 27 - Secrets
Marinette let out yet another annoyed sigh, and Chat couldn’t help but ask as he wrapped his arms around her from behind, "All right, that's the third one. What's wrong purrincess?"
A softer sigh escaped her, "It's just," she turned around to face him, "I'm sick of Lila, Kitty. It's been nearly a month since you let everyone know you were dating someone, and Lila has been dropping hints for days that it's her."
He tried to smile, "Ignore her mon coeur."
"I can't!" She said frustratedly, "She is driving me crazy! I swear she is purposely doing it when I'm around, like she KNOWS something."
"Hey," he whispered lovingly, putting his hands on either side of her face, "we have been nothing but careful. There is no way she knows the truth. We went five months without saying anything, and no one was the wiser. Let her spout her lies,"
"But everyone believes her." She said, pulling his hands from her face, "You can see it in everyone's faces that they know what she is implying, and you should hear the things she says about you."
He rubbed the back of his neck, thinking back to all the things he had heard Lila saying. If truth be told, he was getting sick of it too. He wanted to try and be the bigger person, and just leave Lila to her lies, but seeing how upset his purrincess was, maybe it wasn't the right route to take anymore.
"I can only imagine." He relented, pulling her back into his arms and staring down into her beautiful bluebell eyes, "So, what do you want to do? I'm game for a little of this, or a little of that." He wiggled his eyebrows at her and she giggled, "Oh I'm sure if I set my Kitty after the rat, you'd have far too much fun."
"I do quite enjoy a game of chat and mouse." He said with a smirk, "but you're my favorite mouse to catch." He squeezed her closer and a light blush dusted her cheeks much to his delight.
She completely ignored the comment and told him, "Unless we flat out reveal our relationship, I really don't know what to do. She is a master manipulator, and she'll turn anything I say in her favor. I say anything, and by the time she's done, she'll even have ME convinced that you are dating her."
"Hmm," Chat mused, his eyes suddenly sparkling in mischief that instantly made her suspicious. She stared at him hard as a wide grin spread on his face, "I think I have an idea. It might be a bit risky, but we won't have to tell anyone anything."
She knew this probably wasn't a good idea, but asked anyways, "What's your plan?"
'They should be on their way to the bakery from Alya's any minute now. Have fun Kitty ;)' Marinette's text read, making him grin.
He stretched out of his comfortable position on the rooftop, getting to his feet and checking to make sure the small package was securely in his pocket. With the bait in hand, he started vaulting quickly across the rooftops.
Most people were going about their day, but he was glad that a few people noticed him. This was the one time he wanted eyes on him. This way, there were a few witnesses at least.
He found Alya's cinnamon scent, along with Nino's musky herb scent. They were close. He smiled wider, spotting them just across the street. He couldn't have asked for a better set up. He vaulted straight across their path, letting the small package drop directly in front of them.
Alya let out a small gasp in shock, instantly looking around. He jumped down instantly, feigning relief, "Oh thank god it didn't fall far." He picked up the small box and saw Alya's eyes widen in joy, "Chat Noir! This is yours?"
"Yeah, sorry about that." He said sheepishly.
Alya was already pulling her phone out of her pocket, Nino shaking his head, "No sweat man. It must be important."
Chat nodded, smiling down at the little box, "It is."
Alya had her phone pointed right at him, "What is it? A gift for your mystery girl?"
He smiles into the camera, "We can't hide anything from the great Ladyblogger, can we? Yes, it's an anniversary gift for my girlfriend. I would have hated to have lost it."
Alya's face lit up with the joy of the scoop, "Anniversary huh? One month? Three, a year?"
Chat smirked, "Now, now Ladyblogger, you know the rules. You don't get any details. I told you the truth about having a girlfriend, but that's all you get."
Nino chuckled at Alya's obvious disappointment, "You did promise you wouldn't pry Als."
"What's the harm in knowing how long they've been together?" Alya tried, but Chat shook a finger at her, "Tisk, tisk, fur shame Ladyblogger. No details means no details," he added it for good measure, "or Ladybug would have my tail."
Alya asked again the same thing she had the first time, "And, Ladybug is NOT your girlfriend?"
He sighed, "No, m'lady is the best, dearest friend I could ever ask for. I do love her, that will never, ever change, but she is NOT my girlfriend."
Alya looked just as disappointed as she had the first time, "Right. Ruin my LadyNoir ship why don't you."
He saw the smirk on her face and knew what was coming, "Since you won't give me details about her, maybe you'll give us a peek of her gift? I'm dying to know what it is."
Jackpot.
He held the small box protectively, "I don't think that's a good idea."
"What are the odds that I know her Chat Noir? There are thousands of people, of girls, in this city. Odds are, I'll never see, whatever it is, ever again." Alya tried, knowing that she would actually see whatever it was on Lila at school soon enough. Lila would be tickled to know that she had run into Chat Noir and knew what the gift was before her.
Chat looked at the box with a frown before looking up at her, "No recording."
Alya beamed, putting her phone away. He told them the second the phone is in her pocket, "You have to swear you won't say anything about this to anyone, at least until Monday morning. I want it to be a surprise."
Nino and Alya instantly agree to keep their silence, and he reluctantly opened the small box.
It's a ring, a white gold band that looks like a tiara. The middle of the tiara is heart shaped, and the small diamonds lining it don't overcrowd it. It was a simple design, but absolutely beautiful.
"Wow, that's legit dude." Nino told him, impressed, seeing the usually suave and confident black cat looking nervous, "You think so? You think she'll like it?"
"Without a doubt man." Nino said without a hint of hesitation.
Alya nodded, thinking that it was a little simple for Lila's usual style, but knew it was true anyways, "It's absolutely adorable. She is going to love it."
Chat gave them a bright smile, "Thanks." He lifted the ring out of the box, showing them the inside, "I even had it engraved for her."
There, etched into the white gold, was an elegant script that read 'My Purrincess'.
"Do you really call her that?" Alya asked, teasing.
Chat put the ring back in the box and nodded not the least bit embarrassed, "Every opurr-tunity I get." He told them again, "And you won't say anything right?"
They nodded again, "Not a word." "We'll keep your secret dude."
Chat gave them a quick, two-fingered salute before vaulting back up to the rooftops and disappearing as he headed for home. He landed in his room and pulled out his baton, texting her happily, 'The secret's been planted purrincess.'
It didn’t take long for her response to come through, 'Good job Kitty, now will you PLEASE tell me what the secret is?'
He laughed to himself, proud of all the secrets he was juggling at the moment, 'Tomorrow mon coeur. I promise.'
Monday morning, Adrien walked into school with a pep in his step. Not only had he managed to surprise his purrincess with the ring for their sixth month anniversary, but she had finally relented and asked to know who he was under the mask.
She had cried when she saw that it was him, which he'd panicked about initially before she explained that they were happy tears. They knew it was going to be a dangerous road going forward, but it was working out for the best. Adrien wasn't allowed to have a girlfriend at the moment, but there was nothing stopping Chat Noir from continuing to date her.
Marinette hadn't batted an eye when he told her that as Adrien, his father didn't want him to date anyone right now because of the brand. To his mild surprise, she actually thought their dating in secret would be for the better anyways. This way, they could date out of the spotlight, and not paint a bigger target on their backs for being together.
Lila’s too sweet voice immediately broke through his thoughts, "You sure you are okay Alya?"
He only looked around for a few seconds before seeing Lila walking towards the stairs with Alya who was frowning, "Yeah, everything is fine. You are sure you didn't see anyone special this weekend?"
Lila giggled, making him roll his eyes, "You know I can't tell you if I did or didn't."
He followed behind them at a safe distance, keeping his smirk to himself. He knew what Alya's problem was. There was no ring on Lila's finger.
"H-Hey Adrien. Good morning."
He turned instantly, smiling brightly as she walked up to him slowly, "Good morning Marinette."
They smiled secret smiles at each other before Marinette held out a small box to him, "Oh, I brought these for you."
He took the box as he told her softly, a slight blush on his cheeks, "You didn't have to do that." He opened the box and saw the small array of goodies. There were chocolate covered croissants, a couple of cheese danishes that he was sure weren't going to make it past the first hour if a certain kwami got a hold of them, and his favorite passionfruit macarons.
She said it somewhat teasing, "Well if you don't want them, I'm sure someone else,"
"NO!" He told her, holding the box to his chest, "I want them."
She giggled and leaned up, pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek before whispering it, "I thought so Kitty."
He whispered back with a grin, "Careful purrincess, or someone might see."
She tapped his nose with a wink, "I know how to keep a secret. Trust me."
They laugh before heading upstairs together to class. As they took their seats, with Lila nowhere in sight, Alya told Marinette instantly, "Someone looks extremely happy this morning."
Nino snickered as Adrien pulled out a chocolate croissant, "Here too."
Adrien took a bite and melted against his seat, "Don't judge me Nino." Nino laughed anyways and turned to Marinette, "Where's the treats for everyone else?"
Marinette's response was instant, "You ate them all this weekend when you and Alya came over. Adrien didn't get any since he had that photoshoot."
Adrien nodded instantly, "Exactly! I missed out and deserve these."
The girls giggled, Marinette's right hand going to cover her mouth. The tiara ring twinkled beautifully in the light, and Adrien made his move as he saw Alya eyeing it in shock, "Hey, that's new, isn't it?"
Marinette blushed instantly, looking at the ring on her middle finger, "Oh, uh, yeah."
"Can I see?" He asked innocently. She held her hand out to him, Alya and Nino both leaning closer to get a better look. Adrien thumbed the ring lightly, the shocked exchange of looks between Nino and Alya didn't go unnoticed.
"Wh-Where'd you get that dudette?" Nino asked, trying not to sound nervous.
Lila walked into the room at that exact moment as Marinette answered, "Oh, someone special gave it to me last night as a surprise. It's pretty, don't you think?"
All three of them nodded, and Lila of course, stopped to add her opinion, "Wow, that is such a cute ring Marinette. It's simple, but perfect for you." She said it with a slight flair in her tone, "MY special kitten gave me a ring when we first started dating. I can't wear it out of course, it's so big I'm sure someone would try to steal it."
Adrien saw the slight scowls on Nino and Alya's faces, knowing that they knew now that Lila was lying. He asked them concerned, "Are you guys okay?"
They both instantly smiled, trying to act like nothing was wrong. He smiled at them, before turning back to Marinette, "Do you mind if I take a closer look at the ring?"
Marinette pulled it off and held it out to him. He started commenting on it out loud, making sure to keep Lila's face in his peripheral, "The band is white gold, not silver or a gold-plated overlay either. You can see the Maker's mark for 20 karat gold, which is the highest quality of white gold out there."
He smiled to himself, seeing Lila's face harden, "And the design is simple, sure, but elegant. The tiara is beautifully crafted and the way the heart is integrated into the design is genius."
He held it up to the light, the diamonds catching and sending small prisms everywhere, "The diamonds themselves are flawless and colorless, easily D quality, not one has a bit of cloud or yellow tinge. Based on how many there are, despite them being smaller, there is at least a carat and a half worth of diamonds here."
Lila looked like she was practically seething in jealousy now, and he brought the ring closer, adding it innocently, "Whoever gave this to you must love you immensely. Even the inside engraving of 'My Purrincess' is flawlessly done."
She took the ring back from him, putting it back on her finger quickly as she said it hushed, "You weren't supposed to see that."
He glanced at the others, seeing the surprise on their faces before he faked it himself, lowering his voice, "Purr-incess, that sounds a lot like, are you the one dating Chat Noir Marinette?"
Marinette blushed heavily but didn't say anything to confirm or deny it. Lila stormed off towards her seat without another word, Alya asking her again, "Are you?"
Marinette smiled at her, saying it calmly, "My boyfriend just has a thing for cat puns, that's all."
Adrien grinned at her comment, giving her a small wink as Nino and Alya held knowing stares.
Marinette grinned happily, knowing that his plan had worked, and glad that their secrets were working out after all.

20 Questions: A Miraculous Ladybug Tale by DearestMrIcarus
FFN Link / AO3 Link
DearestMrIcarus’ FFN / AO3
Fandom: Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir
Characters: Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir //  Marinette Dupain-Cheng | Ladybug
Rating: T
Summary: It has been 5 years since their first encounter, and Ladybug has become tired of Chat's incessent begging for a reveal. She offers him a chance to play 20 Questions, followed by a chance for him to guess her identity, with a CATch, if he doesn't guess her identity correctly, he must stop pushing for a reveal.
-------------------------------
“It’s not a secret that I am a huge fan of Miraculous stories that focus on the Marichat portion of the Love Square™, and this story was one of the first I encountered as I was entering the fandom.  The premise is devilishly straightforward: on the eve of their fifth anniversary as heroes, Chat asks one time too many if he’ll ever learn Ladybug’s true identity.  Ladybug, who has grown weary of his desire to unmask her, surprises Chat with counterproposal: she’ll grant him twenty questions – answered with a simple yes or no – to guess her civilian identity.
The catch?  If, after asking all twenty questions, Chat still doesn’t know who Ladybug is, he’ll promise to never press her again about her identity.  It turns out to be a risk the feline superhero is more than willing to take, and though the story initially seems like it would bend toward a traditional LadyNoir angle, Chat cleverly makes his task ever more complex by leaning on his alter-ego’s friend, Marinette, for help.  For her part, Marinette finds the more time she spends with Chat, the harder it becomes keeping her secret safe from his intense feline curiosity – especially when she starts to wonder if that spot in her heart long reserved for Adrien is actually meant for another.
I had the pleasant misfortune of reading the story as each chapter was published, forcing me to wait eagerly for the welcome email that the next segment was now ready to consume.  Re-reading it again recently, I can still feel the simmering tension, ratcheting ever higher with each question asked: will this be the one when Chat finally knows?  Will Ladybug manage to evade his feline sleuthing successfully?  Or does she even want to?  Unexpected and delightful character development abounds as the two heroes tango around each other and their full cast of friends, including marvelous supporting appearances by Nino and Alya that help keep the action light and flowing.
Set against university-aged versions of our favorite heroes, and a remarkably vibrant version of Paris – with, of course, an ever-vindictive Hawkmoth hovering over everything – Twenty Questions is a wonderfully engaging, completely bingeable story with more than a few surprises that will keep the reader guessing until the final chapter.”

picture me (just like this) - Chapter 2/2
Still for @lnc2 (I know it's no longer strictly Marichat, but I don't think you mind some Ladynoir). :D
AO3 + FFN
Summary: Chat Noir’s finished Ladybug’s gift.
She didn't forget about the photos.
(Or what they meant to him.)
Chat Noir on his part hadn't uttered a single word about the project or any plans for a gift exchange to Ladybug—unlike his usual M.O. of telling her anything and everything under the sun that didn't possibly have to do with identities—so she easily deduced that it was indeed supposed to be a top-secret surprise for herself. Of course, that wasn't exactly a possibility at this point. (Not that Chat had to know such.)
He did, however, try and show Marinette the finished product, and whilst it was extremely tempting to agree, she'd forced herself to impose some sense of curtailment on her eagerness in the end. So instead, she'd insisted on waiting until Ladybug saw it, as it would be more special and intimate for her to be the first one to see it before anyone else. She'd figured she already technically ruined her own surprise, so the least she could do was wait and keep as much suspense as she could—even if there was a desperate desire to just sneak a little peek.
(But he'd sounded so giddy over the phone about it; so she could be patient for him.)
That didn't mean she arrived to patrols without bated breath and searching eyes. According to Tikki, her patience sucked.
Eventually, he showed up one evening with the precious little cargo tucked underneath one arm, and she had to contain the urge to squeal and make grabby-hands.
"What's that?" she blurted as his boots touched the rooftop.
According to Tikki, her acting skills sucked too.
Chat made a show of glancing down confusedly. "You mean this?" He gave it a little shake.
"Yeah, is it a gift?"
Tikki may have been somewhat right.
Chat didn't seem to notice though. "Maybe. Maybe not," he wheedled, rocking on his heels.
"Well, it sure looks like a gift to me," she huffed, impatiently crossing her arms.
"Somebody is the curious cat tonight."
"And unlike you, I deserve my satisfaction," she sniffed primly.
"And someone's not going to deserve her gift instead," he taunted.
"Told you!" she grinned, putting forth her hands expectantly.
"You did not!" he retorted, yanking back the present against his chest. "You were just being nosy."
"Was not."
"Were too."
"I don't see how I was being nosy when it's my present."
"But you didn't know that at first."
She scowled. "I had a feeling."
"How?" he pouted.
"Uhh," she stammered. "Well, who else would you be carrying a gift for?"
"Ah ah ah, I think," Chat declared, hiding the present from her line of sight behind his back, "you just don't want to admit you like my presents. And didn't want this to be for anybody else."
"Pffft," she scoffed, waving a hand, "sure, the diamond earrings and Chanel bag were some nice momentos, but they're a little flashy."
And extremely expensive. And the nicest things she owned that had to stay tucked away in her closet because he refused any of her vetoes, and she couldn't be seen with them without raised eyebrows and questions; but she did admire them from time to time. They were sweet gifts nonetheless.
"Alas, she has specific taste," Chat said, inching the gift back out into view.
Her eyes automatically followed the movement of it. "Please," she blinked very kindly up at him.
He sighed. "Who am I to resist the wiles of my Lady." He dropped the gift into her hands with a flourish.
She grinned triumphantly, appraising the book-shaped object covered in her favorite shade of pink and black polka dotted wrapping paper, topped off with a cute little white bow in the middle.
"I will warn you," Chat informed, astoundingly shy all of the sudden, "it's no diamonds or Versace; in fact, I sort of made it, so it's definitely nothing amazing—"
"Don't be silly—I bet it's one of your best gifts yet," she winked, slipping a finger under one of the folds on the backside.
She was pretty sure it could look like a three-year old did it and she would love it still.
Encased in the wrapping was a simple black leather book with the title Adventures of LB and CN and a yin and yang symbol in the corner.
"Uh, I actually was able to commission Nathaniel to do a little edit of the yin and yang symbol to fit our themes...since, you know, we're like yin and yang?"
She nodded, smiling as she softly grazed a finger over the area.
Flipping open the book, there was the dedication on the first page:
For My Lady, My Partner, My Best Friend
She was certain her cheeks couldn't stretch any further.
The first few photos were definitely from the beginning of their partnership. Like their first fist bump, first pose for the press, and one of their first selfies even—they all were lined against the pages, showcasing the novelty and surrealness that encompassed the first couple of weeks. She shook her head in amazement. Even as it felt so long ago, it was as if it were just yesterday she opened that little box of change and responsibility.
It was clear as she continued that Chat had arranged them in a linear-timeline, as the photos became newer and more comfortable. The photos he had first shown her that night in her room were peppered amongst others she noted, and there were quite a few more photos in between. If she were more courageous and self-disciplined, she would ask him to tell her what they meant to him again. And if she were honest enough with herself, she really wanted him to answer the same way he had that night, just so she could see that sparkle in his eye again—honest, hopeful, yearning, all in a way that made her feel warm and funny inside. He'd talk all night if she'd ask, and she would sit beside him and listen just because she could.
By the time she was about halfway through, more photos including other members of the team started popping up. Viperion and Pegasus posing ridiculously back-to-back, Carapace atop Chat's shoulders, Rena pranking Kim with an illusion, there was even a picture of Queen Bee cracking a reluctant grin and peace sign—they all were moments that somehow got captured. Some of the group photos had little descriptions underneath or beside the photos, like, "Goofing around with our buddies—the gargoyles," or "Ice cream and hang with the gang." Some were left by themselves, with little decals matching their respective kwami-animal theme sprinkled throughout.
"I actually got some of these photos from them," Chat said as she landed on a selfie of Viperion and Ryuko. "I mentioned to Rena what I was doing, so she offered to have herself and the others send some photos as a contribution."
If anything, the thought of her team each pitching in some of their own photos was even more touching, and her cheeks were already aching from all the smiling she was doing.
"That was nice of them."
It truly surprised her—the amount of pictures that had been taken and printed so she could relive them all, each photo recalling each moment with clarity and affection.
But to finish it off, at the very end was a photo of her and Chat sitting on a rooftop, her head on his shoulder and their backs to the camera as the sun set; two figures against the fevered oranges and yellows of the sky, side by side. Underneath read—
Ladybug,
No matter what happens, I hope you can look back upon this with fond memories and remember some of the best times. Because my best times are when I'm with you. So here's to all the memories—even good and bad—and many more that will stand the end of time, just like us. You and me, against the world.
Your Partner, Chat Noir
By the time she got to the ending line, it was becoming too blurry. She swiped a knuckle under her eye, not wanting to risk a single teardrop lest it mar the precious page.
"Oh my god, you're crying! I messed up, didn't I— I'm sorry, this—"
She effectively cut off his rambling worries as she threw her arms around him, hugging him fiercely. "You didn't mess up a thing. I love this."
"You do?"
She fervently nodded her head against his shoulder as she laughed, the ends of his hair at the nape of his neck tickling her cheek. "I do. This is amazing."
"On par with Versace?"
"Better," she corrected, running a hand over the front cover reverently. "This is the best gift ever, Chat." She already knew its rightful place where it belonged; nestled in between the two dried roses in the box tucked in the secret corner of her closet.
He grinned, looking simultaneously shy and pleased as he stood before her. "Well, I thought you could use something that'd bring a smile to your face."
'And—and she just looked so happy, so carefree, standing under her umbrella in the rain with a smile that could turn any cloud in the sky away as she explained. I couldn't help but take a photo, because I knew then that as long as I know her, I'd always try to get her to look like that. Happy.'
"You make me happy."
The words slipped past her lips, unbidden, honest, and completely unchecked; but she wouldn't take back the words for anything.
"I do?" he blinked, voice colored with surprise and wonder, as if any foresight to insert the usual flair of charismatic self-assuredness into his tone disappeared.
And maybe, that was why it only felt right to be honest: "Of course! I—I may not say it often enough...but you're my partner. My best friend. You've always made me happy."
Because when he'd noticed she was feeling down, he'd taken the time and effort to make something special for her, just to try and cheer her up. And sometimes, she really wondered why she drew that line for herself, and when it had become so blurred. Especially when he looked at her like that as she held what she knew was going to be one of her most treasured possessions for the rest of her life.
It turned out she didn't have to ask again. "It goes both ways, My Lady; you make me the happiest Chat around." It was said with earnest veracity—the same veracity he'd wielded when talking about her on her chaise that night—eyes sparkling and honest, his smile hopeful and yearning. A photo wasn't necessary when her brain already committed that look to her memory.
She stepped forward. "Well," she said, before stretching onto tiptoes so her lips could meet the smooth curve of his right cheek. "Thank you again, Chat Noir. I'll cherish this forever." She pulled back, the tips of their noses barely grazing— "And the book."
Smiling, she launched off the rooftop, a blushing open-mouthed Chat Noir in her wake. As she landed on the facing building, she slid her yo-yo open and pressed the camera icon, giggling as the yo-yo audibly clicked.
This was definitely a memory for the books.

Lifetime of love
AO3 / FFN
Pairing - Adrinette + Ladynoir
Prompt - ‘Generational Knowledge’
Summary -
"How...how did you open this up? The technique has been lost for thousands and thousands of years! Only passed by to one another by generation to generation!" He demanded enthusiastically, hands on her shoulders and shaking her tiny body. "This can't be done by pure luck alone! I refuse to believe it! O-Or are you one of those super smart middle schoolers I see on Internet articles who can do anything they set their minds to-"
"M-M-Monsieur! I can assure you that I was just playing around. You're making me a little dizzy," Thankfully, before the curator could rattle what was left of her working brain cells, a very firm pair of hands gripped his wrists and then tugged him off the girl. The man was met with sharp emerald greens which he met by having to look up a bit since the teen was much taller than him in comparison (unfairly so too because dammit, he's in his mid-twenties and this boy is probably fifteen at best!)
"Shake her up any further and she'll turn into a dizzy, babbling mess," Adrien teased, gently pushing Marinette's face into his chest and holding her securely and protectively. As if they're longtime, inseparable soulmate lovers.
(Or, wielding the miraculous of creation and destruction enables the users to inherit their predecessors’ knowledge and information and all sorts of things)
~(x)~ . . . She was all instinct and muscle memory, her mind not clearly registering with what her body was doing when she picked up the ancient artefact that the curator introduced to her class during their trip to le musée. Her ears were deaf to his inquisitive and wary questionings which soon then turned into bewildered gasps of awe and utter delight as she brought the fragile contraption to life. What was once a seemingly dull and forgotten machine was now something so much more and just absolutely magical. The curator was gobsmacked. As if all she did was look at it, Marinette nonchalantly placed the item back in its original place, only for the curator to pick it back up with unadulterated shock and hands trembling with awed bewilderment. "How...how did you open this up? The technique has been lost for thousands and thousands of years! Only passed by to one another by generation to generation!" "Shake her up any further and she'll turn into a dizzy, babbling mess," Adrien teased, gently pushing Marinette's face into his chest and holding her securely and protectively. As if they're longtime, inseparable soulmate lovers. "Humans are known to lose and discover skills and techniques time and time again. And Marinette in particular is especially smart. Very, very smart. It's no wonder she worked that thing out so easily," "Oh, I do apologise for being so desperate and silly. I just...wow...she's a literal miracle worker. I'd love for you to have a look at the other stuff we have, Mademoiselle. Marinette? We have so many interesting artefacts and your tinkering and curiosity would be a great assistance for us all," The curator pleaded, hands clasped together and eyes shining like a golden retriever. Much to his confusion and Adrien's endearment, Marinette barely slurred out an answer and still swayed on her feet. "Oh no, Monsieur. I think you broke her," Adrien giggled, the curator on the other hand immediately panicked on the spot animatedly and sprinted away to fetch her some water with apologies being repeated over and over again. "And there he goes~" He brought themselves to a bench nearby, the blond glad that the rest of their class was still distracted by the exhibition and were too far away to have noticed the little commotion. He had her all to himself now, his inner kitten purring with shameless delight. "Adrien? Ermm..." Marinette gained back her bearings, her face cutely timid and her baby blues like sparkling glitter under her dark lashes and midnight hair. "Hehe...I guess I just got in the zone and just had to figure that contraption out," A beautiful pink bloomed in her cheeks when Adrien squeezed her hands tenderly, placing one of his own on her soft face to cradle it sweetly and his eyes just full of warmth and adoration. She didn't know what to make of this soul-searching expression, as if he knew every single bit of her and that he undeniably loved what he saw. "You really are amazing, Marinette," The 'My Lady' went unspoken under his tongue but the way he breathed out her name was full of absolute love and reverence. This time, her face erupted in red and all that she could do was hide her face in his chest, making him laugh in return and hold her tight. His Lady was just too cute. ~(x)~ Chat Noir knew that his Lady was spying on him as he scribbled away translations of a lost piece of writing from thousands of years ago (which he photographed from the exhibition they visited not too long ago as civilians), his lips resting in a playful smirk as he felt her pretty eyes bore into his frame whilst hiding behind a chimney a good distance away. It was frankly just too cute and the feline within him was practically begging to pounce on her and kiss her face all over. "Come on out, Marinette~! I know you're over there," He finally spoke after finishing with the translations, faux ears flicking from the sound of her surprised "Eeep!". The hero then turned around as she finally showed herself, her walk awkward and her face plastered with fake confusion. "Mari-who? It's just me, Chat Noir," The maniacal laugh that left her pretty pink lips said otherwise and he couldn't help but hopelessly sigh with endearment and love. Placing his hands on hers and bringing them to his mouth for a tender, traditional kiss, he kept his emerald greens on her. "Your Chaton is feeling a little hurt that you think he's that dumb," He batted his long lashes, eating up the adorable redness that crept up on the apples of her cheeks and turned her complexion into a beautiful bloom of sakura and plum blossoms. "Ma-ri-nette~" This time, he nudged his nose with hers, grin widening when her body relaxed at his touch and a kissable pout remained on her dewy lips. Sweet, sugary, rosy lips that begged to be kissed over and over again until all she could rasp is his name- "Chat Noir...how? Comment tu sais? Do you realise how much time and effort I put in to keep you off my trail? All the plans I had to come up with?" She lightly scolded, allowing herself to be embraced in his willing arms whilst he laughed in the crook of her neck, more than delighted. "Because I'm your smart Chaton. Yours. All yours~" He purred, both of them sinking to their knees on the rooftop and holding each other tight. "And time and effort my foot! You always invite me over to your balcony whenever you see me. You're practically saying 'Oh it's me! Your Lady! Can't you tell as I kick your ass in UMS?'" His false falsetto earned him another playful slap on the chest which he simply laughed off merrily. "Maybe I just wanted to spend time with my partner- and I do not sound like that. Hmmph!" She muttered, pushing him away by pressing a finger against his nose and then her eyes landed on the translations he was working on. Her baby blues widened when the understanding clicked in. "Oh- you...you too, huh?" He turned back slightly to pick up his work, placing them in his Lady's hands who looked at the pieces with wonderment. "One of my predecessors wrote this," Chat Noir sighed happily, tail curling around his Lady's waist as her face reddened even further the more she digested the information, virtually blending in with her iconic super-suit. The boy was merely a pinch away from trying to make her even redder with his lips alone. "It's...it's a love letter...a very passionate one...oh..." She couldn't help the squeak that left her, now hiding her face in her hands as she came across the more intimate and amorous parts of the writing, the girl was far too embarrassed to keep reading and the air was suddenly too hot. Way too hot. "Mmhmm, for his Ladybug," The softness in her partner's voice had Ladybug watch him again, their eyes meeting and trapping one another under their gaze. "She was his wife. They had a family...and they grew old together. It's...it's nice to see," He then became despondent, his grip on her hands tightening and his belt tail becoming flack around her torso. She realised why. "He's one of the few ones to have had a happy ending, right?" Ladybug smoothed her fingers through his golden hair, letting him rest his forehead on hers. "I'm sorry," "Why are you apologising? It's not your fault," "I know...but most of my predecessors survived because of yours sacrificing themselves to save them..." "Because all of us love all of you. One way or another. Be it family, friendship, rivalry...and..." His plush lips were now brushing hers, their fingers entwined and their hearts beating in tandem. "The way I love you, Marinette," From the soft feathers of his warm lips upon hers, Ladybug was no longer able to hold back. "Adrien..." And then the rest of her words were swallowed by his loving kisses. . . . ~(x)~

United By Love, Rain And Forgotten Umbrellas
Her eyes as blue as the merciful drops from the heaven. His eyes as green as the happy grass enjoying the heavenly showers. A tale of how forgotten umbrellas in the rain bring together the four lovable sides of the Love Square.
Chapter 4: When Our Paper Boat Floats in the Water of Love

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Will you go to the ice sculpture gallery with me?”
Silence reigned in Miss Bustier’s classroom. A silence so heavy, so dense, you could cut it with a saw.
Such was the silence, that the fifteen children in the room could hear the cars outside on the road honking, the hum of the desktop computer and the soft squeal of someone shifting on the cushion they sat on.
Fourteen pairs of eyes turned to the petite blonde girl in the back. “Sorry,” Rose whispered, shrinking a bit in her seat as Juleka patted her back comfortingly.
The attention shifted back to the front. Specifically, to the two dorks over whose just a friend relationship most of the class had bet nearly three whole months of pocket money.
“Mat do you wean?” Marinette blubbered, her eyes bulging out at how stupid her words really sounded that moment.
The boy smiled. “What do I mean?” he replied, chuckling as the girl felt her cheeks heat up. “Will you go out with me? Like a….uhm, a date? If you want?” His hand reached up behind his neck, a sheepish smile crawling on his face.
Silence again. Well, near silence, considering a brown-haired Italian girl in the back was gritting her teeth too noisily.
Marinette blinked, then blinked again. This must be a dream. It had to be a dream!
Was Adrien Freaking Agreste really asking her out?
Her brain started its quick mathematics (with a speed that she wished she possessed in Ms. Mendeleiev’s pop quizzes). Adrien asking her out = Adrien having feelings for her = 99.54% chance of Adrien eventually falling for her (given her clumsiness might account for the 0.46% uncertainty) = Adrien and her getting married in future = Emma, Hugo, Louis along with her dream house, a cat, NOPE, a hamster being a reality and the cute little hamster would finally get the name she had decided 3 years ago, that was-
“Marinette? Will you?” Coming back to reality, the girl saw the question swimming in Adrien’s eyes.
Oh goodness, it really was happening! Why was it happening? She couldn’t be so lucky. Yeah, there was-
  “NO WAY THIS IS HAPPENING!”
Shocked silence. A resounding facepalm. Green eyes clouded with the pain of rejection.
Bluebell eyes bugged out with the realisation that she had just spoken her thoughts out loud at the worst time possible!
Mon Dieu! It is too early to put that 0.46% uncertainty in action!!
Clasping her hands over her mouth, Marinette did her best to undo the blunder, “MEEP! I-I-I did-didn’t me-mean th-that! It wa-”
Her messed up words were drowned out by the class’ sudden uproar.
“Of course you didn’t mean that!”
“No way she just rejected him after all these years!”
“Girl, girl, girl…”
“Marinette, you couldn’t have meant that! Fairy tales aren’t supposed to go like that!”
“Ridiculous, utterly ridiculous! Accept that proposal, Dupain-Cheng, I’m not losing like that!”
“Alya, I won! Now give me my….”
The triumphant voice trailed off as Lila noticed the scathing glares her peers gave her.
Silence reigned in the room again, this time tensed, as the attention shifted back to the front.
Marinette was still freaking out at the stupidest mistake of her entire life when a sigh nudged her back to reality.
 Adrien was speaking.
“It is okay, Marinette.” He shrugged.
Okay? Nothing is okay! I messed up big time!
    “Adr-Adrien..”
“I get that you do not like me…”
Of course I like you! I have not been romancing all your photos, ads and cutouts for practising Romeo and Juliet!
“...You have told me the same on many occasions…”
Just to prevent you from knowing that I have a universe-sized crush on you! Seriously, I thought about things and I feel. Freaking. James Bond style. Stalkerish. Is that even a thing? And no Alya, you DO NOT GET TO FACEPALM knowing how idiotic things happened between me and Adrien in the wax mueseum!
 “It is-isn’t like tha-”
The boy smiled ruefully, “I know you are saying this just to make me feel better. But I am all good! I know you have feelings for Luka…”
Luka? Luka Couffaine? How the hell did he strum his way into this mess?
“...and that he feels the same for you..”
 Her eyes bugged out. “WHAT?”
LUKA FEELS THE SAME FOR ME? BU-BUT, IS-ISN’T HE…
“My brother has a boyfriend,” a quiet voice spoke from behind.
  EXACTLY! Thanks Jules!
“Oh!” Adrien seemed...surprised. But catching himself, he continued, “Still, I know you see me as just a friend and…”
  Just a friend.
Just A friend.
  JUST A  F...R...I...E...N...D…
Something raged inside Marinette, hearing those Three. Damned. Words. “Oh goodness, I SWEAR on the name of EVERYTHING holy and lovable!” she screamed, shocking everyone in the room. “Fuck this Just a Friend drama and..,” Grabbing a petrified Adrien Agreste by his collar, Marinette kissed him on the lips, pouring out the frustration of all the years into that one sweet gesture.
As she pulled back from the dazed-but-certainly-ecstatic blond, the class erupted into wolf-whistles, cheers of “HELL YEAH! IT HAS BEEN TOO LONG!” and thunderous applause, perfectly masking out the angered string of Italian words being spewed out from an unknown corner.
“So...so I take that, as a yes?” the smirking Agreste asked the now-flustered girl.
“OMG! You guys just made me a fortune! I am going to celebrate! The Adrinette ship is finally sailing!!!” Alya squealed, counting the thick wad of Euros Lila tossed at her, grumbling.
Adrien couldn’t help but laugh as the love of his life hid her flushed face in his jacket.
Three years back, Marinette had caught his attention right from their first interaction. On later thought, he had found the feeling refreshing. The feeling of not being treated as the Adrien Agreste, but just like some random new kid.
Somehow, the clumsy girl who got herself caught in the umbrella had found a special place in his heart. Her opinions, her advice, her happiness, everything, big or small, had mattered to him. He simply had been in denial of his feelings for way too long.
And it was his sheer luck that Marinette waited for him. That even though she had multitudes of people who cared for her and showed their affection for her, she ultimately chose him.
Alya was partially right. Adrinette was finally sailing. But it was not a ship.
  No.
Adrinette was a paper boat. Tiny and meagre, yet a true beauty in its own. A paper boat that sailed in the rains. The rains that had brought them together.
Yes. Adrinette was a paper boat that now sailed in the waters of love.
 Everything was just purr-fect.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is followed by the development of the Ladynoir side of the square in the next chapter, so do make sure to read that if you are following the fic!
With that, Mini Scat!

Trivia Tuesday: 6/2/20 - The Monsters That Made Us: Introduction, Summary, Some Fun Facts & A Sneak Peek
Tumblr media
Note: I do not own the banner. It belongs to the lovely @ao3commentoftheday, and so do the other banners for my writing posts that I’ll end up using for my WIP Wednesdays and Six Sentence Sundays.
Fandom/show: Miraculous Ladybug
Title: The Monsters That Made Us
Summary: He’d taken the oath to help his father defeat their enemies just before he’d turned fourteen as Chat Noir, wielder of the Cat Miraculous, and years later, at the age of twenty, Adrien Agreste comes face-to-face with his father’s arch-enemy, the beautiful masked heroine Ladybug. He begins a secret friendship with her behind his father’s back, getting to know more and more about the girl who saves the city and holds them together, her seeming to be able to do it all to the citizens, but is faced with a great amount of stress in reality. Soon enough, Chat Noir finds himself falling in love with her, and finds an escape from the toxicity of living in infamy with his father, truly becoming good and redeeming himself deep down - all with Ladybug by his side.
Rating: T
Pairing: LadyNoir with minor Adrienette (mostly them as friends, as LadyNoir is the main focus for this AU)
Chapters planned: 27
Wordcount/goal: Over 100.000
Fun facts:
In this, Adrien did admire Ladybug as a civilian. He kept it a secret from his father, however; as he wasn’t sure how Gabriel would react and didn’t know if she was ‘good’ to them or not. So when they actually meet, he’s charmed instantly by LB and really likes her.
I got the title of this from the song ‘Wolf at Your Door’ by Chloe x Halle. It’s from the lyric ‘the monsters that made us, they wrote down your names’, and when I was listening to it while brainstorming ideas for this AU, I had to make it the title. Or at least incorporate it in.
Enemies-to-friends-to-lovers LadyNoir is a god-tier concept and I had to write something about it. So, have a fluffy AU with banter, villain!Adrien, a redemption arc for our cat son and cynical asshole Chat Noir.
On topic of him being an SOB at first, while he continues to redeem himself, he does become the sunshine baby we all know him as in canon. You’re very welcome. 😊
Adrien’s redemption will come through his love for Ladybug. He realizes he’s more than how Gabriel has treated him all his life, and realizes that he can do more than helping his father achieve a goal that Gabriel manipulated him into.
Nathalie isn’t Mayura in this. She’s married to Gabriel and does help him (kinda like Lila except she’s his spouse), but she doesn’t have the Peacock Miraculous because this Nathalie actually has a bit of self-awareness and doesn’t want to end up like Emilie.
Adrien has the Cat Miraculous because Gabriel stole it from Fu (who’s identity Gabriel’s been aware of since he found the Butterfly. It’s more of a side plot that I don’t wait to spoil, but is still very important to the main story itself). However, since Gabriel is a dumbass bitch, he thought he took the Ladybug Miraculous and was originally going to give it to Nathalie considering it’s not damaged, but ended up with the Cat instead and persuaded his son to join him in his villainy.
On topic of Adrien/CN redeeming himself from his love for Ladybug, he doesn’t do it for solely that reason. He does it because she taught him how to be a better person, and he wants to continue that with her by his side.
Adrien did to go Francoise Dupont, but he wasn’t in Bustier’s class. However, he does know Nino and the rest of the guys, and is introduced to the girl squad at Chloe’s party.
Lila is in this, and she does still play the role of helping Gabriel. She’s also Felix’s girlfriend in this AU, and he’s probably the only person she actually cares about.
And finally, a spoiler alert: Nino bitch-slaps Gabriel at the end for all of the times he was a dick to him.
If you wanna know any more about this AU, feel free to send an ask in my ask box right here! It’ll be up next Saturday on AO3 and FFN, and you can find me there (links are in the typed names of the sites and in bold) too.
Hope everyone who read this enjoyed! Check my blog tomorrow for my WIP Wednesday post that talks more about some more WIP ideas in my head.

Fic Writer Tag Game
tagged by @im-the-king-of-the-ocean
...it feels like I just did something very similar to this very recently but I’ll do it again I guess. This time I’m gonna include Fanfiction.Net, though, just so I can give different answers. That being said, I’m only going to link to the AO3 version of the fic
Fandoms:
These days, it’s almost all Tales of Arcadia, but my AO3 also has some Miraculous Ladybug, SPOP, and RWBY as well as a crossover with The Hunger Games. In addition to the above, my FFN also has some PMMM, Tai Chi Chasers, Sailor Moon, iZombie, Harry Potter and Voltron Legendary Defender in there.
Number of Fics: 98 on FFN, but only 60 of them ever got transferred to AO3.
Fic I Spent the Most Time on: I know I said I was torn between two fics last time, but honestly? I spent hours looking up the effects of PTSD, solitary confinement, and various forms of torture for the Juliet Dies; Life Continues fics. There’s a reason why when I finally publish Juliet Survives in This I’m gonna contain two disclaimers: one for the Dead Dove Do Not Eat and another for the fact that I’m using magic and the fact that Claire’s not entirely human anymore just so I can find a way to make it so that Claire has a good reason for not being any worse off. The other fic I was writing I only did some research before going, “nah I’m bastardizing Arthurian legend”
Fic I Spent the Least Time on: *looks at old writing and cringes* Raked over Crimson Waves, probably...
Longest Fic: Every Ghost in Me is the longest fic I’ve ever written at a proud 10,188 words... and somehow it’s a oneshot.
Shortest Fic: For actual fics, it’s A Shop Infested on AO3 and Arme Harry on FFN. Though, A Shop Infested is also the shortest English actual fic on FFN for me as well (yes, I have one (1) fic written in German.) However, this doesn’t count my poetry. On AO3 it’s Isn't It Ironic? On FFN it’s In My Arms.
Most Hits: On AO3, it’s I Bet You Kiss Your Knuckles (Right Before They Touch My Cheek) with its 1741 hits. On FFN, it’s Dare, which has 15,174 hits. Though, for comparison, Dare was written in 2015; I Bet You Kiss Your Knuckles (Right Before They Touch My Cheek) only has 348 hits on FFN.
Most Kudos: I Bet You Kiss Your Knuckles (Right Before They Touch My Cheek)
Most Comments: On AO3 my collab with Tuna, Birds, Bees, and Blood Magic, has the most comments, but Juliet Dies in This has the most threads. On FFN, it’s still Dare.
Most Bookmarks: Birds, Bees, and Blood Magic holds this title on AO3. The closest similar thing we have on FFN is favorites, so that title goes to Picked the Wrong Girl.
Total Word Count: On AO3, my net word count is 82,299. On FFN, I had to break out excel, and my net word count would be approximately 136,615 words. Approximately because I can’t separate the fic from the author’s note.
Favorite Fic I Wrote: You can’t make me choose... but it’s probably one of those jlaire hurt/comfort fics I’ve written. Or for that matter, the LadyNoir hurt/comfort fics I used to write when it comes to FFN even though I decided not to move them off of AO3... wait a second. I have a type. Oh no I have a type when writing and shipping and that type is the person who’s associated with light and goodness comforts the person who’s associated with darkness. I mean I’ve written outside of this type many a time but let’s face it so many of my shippy hurt comfort fics more or less boil down to this description.... how did I not realize this before.
Fic you Want to Rewrite or Expand on: I will never actually finish it but every so often I still want to go and give With the Distance Amplified a proper ending. Other than that, I kind of want to go and expand upon I Bet You Kiss Your Knuckles (Right Before They Touch My Cheek) despite the fact that I don’t want to have to watch ML canon to do so properly... oh, and also? I really need to finish the 3Below interlude to Juliet Dies; Life Continues.
Share a bit of a WIP or Story Idea you’re Planning on: so earlier today I posted a Krexie ficlet... I need to do some more editing so that the fic makes me nearly cry as much as the ficlet did and write all the other scenes because the fic is much more than just the kiss but here is the kiss from Krel’s POV:
There is a very full bowl of cat food, and multiple bowls of water. Krel follows Archie, and he finds Douxie, sitting on the floor, curled in a blanket, back to the door. Archie meows and runs away. Douxie doesn’t look up, and so Krel walks around him. Douxie’s head is bowed, and he is typing frantically at his phone, and then erasing what he wrote. There are tear tracks on his face, though they are hard to see, when most of the tears probably crawled into the cracks. Krel kneels in front of him, trying to see what Douxie is typing. The movement catches Douxie’s attention, and he startles. The blanket falls away from Douxie as he scrambles to his feet.
Normally, his reflexes are better. Not so clumsy. Not almost falling over his own long, cracked limbs. Krel reaches out to help Douxie stabilize himself, but Douxie uses a wall instead.
Douxie rips his earbuds from his ears, and for a second Krel can hear a woman singing from the earbuds before Douxie silences the music he was listening to. Douxie takes a breath. It is wet and shaking.
“Krel, why are you here?” Douxie wraps his arms around himself, and Krel isn’t sure if Douxie is cold from wearing a sleeveless shirt or just uncomfortable.
“I saw your text; I worried.”
“I’m sorry.”
Krel takes a large step towards Douxie; Douxie takes a small step back.
“Douxie, you, we’re gonna break the curse, you’re going to –“
“I’m going to die today,” Douxie whispers, looking at his own feet. Krel looks past the soft shorts Douxie is wearing to Douxie’s ankles. They have been taken over by cracks, and they’re advancing.
They are out of time. Douxie is out of time. Krel feels his lower lip start to tremble, and he tries to make it stop.
“You, you should probably go,” Douxie says like he doesn’t mean it. “I don’t… I’m not going to make you watch me die.”
“I’m not going to make you…” Krel can’t bring himself to say the word “die”, like saying it aloud will make it true. And that’s silly, that’s superstition, that’s not scientific, but every scientific way Krel has tried to save Douxie hasn’t worked. “I’m not leaving you alone; I don’t think you want to be alone right now.”
“Then can you-“ Douxie breaks off into a coughing fit. “Can you hold me? If that’s okay?”
Embrace your mistakes, like Mother would have said if she were not dead.
Krel takes another step towards Douxie, and Douxie does not step away, rather, he leans into Krel, unwrapping his arms from his own torso. They take one, two, three steps backward, to where the blanket lays abandoned on the floor. They sink to the ground, arms around each other. Krel cannot save Douxie, but he can make sure that Douxie is comfortable. Douxie clings to Krel with a surprising amount of strength. Krel ignores the urge to wrap his fingers around Douxie’s neck, just so he can keep track of Douxie’s pulse. Krel cards his fingers through Douxie’s hair instead. His other arm wraps around Douxie’s torso and his hand rests on Douxie’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” Krel says, hating how his voice sounds when he’s about to cry.
“It’s not your fault, all of you did your best,” Douxie says, voice choked and so very scared. Krel feels his shirt starting to grow damp. “I don’t want to die; I wish we had more time.”
“Me too,” Krel says. A tear slips down his cheek, and he tightens his grip around Douxie’s torso, like he can keep Douxie from slipping away.
Douxie jerks, and Krel fears Douxie might be convulsing, but he’s just pushing himself up so he can look Krel in the eye. “Krel, I…” Douxie coughs, turning away, and when he turns back his glowing eyes are so much dimmer. “I love you.”
Douxie goes slack in Krel’s arms, closing his eyes. Krel presses his lips against Douxie’s and hopes.
A couple tears escape Krel’s eyes as he tries not to think of how he still doesn’t know for sure if he loves Douxie the way the curse wants him too, if he’s too late and he should have kissed or at least told Douxie sooner instead of waiting.
Krel closes his eyes. Douxie’s lips are chapped or cracked or maybe both, but they are still. Passive. Krel exhales through his nose; Douxie’s lips feel dead.
Krel is about to pull away, but then Douxie starts kissing him back. And it isn’t much, just a firm press that wasn’t there before, but it is enough to convince Krel that maybe it isn’t too late.
