Meta Platforms Inc plans to end access to news on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada once a parliament-approved legislation requiring internet giants to pay news publishers comes into effect, the company said on Thursday. The legislation, known as the Online News Act, was approved by the Senate upper chamber earlier on Thursday and will become law after receiving royal assent from the governor general, a formality. The legislation was proposed after complaints from Canada’s media industry, which wants tighter regulation of tech companies to prevent them from elbowing news businesses out of the online advertising market. “Today, we are confirming that news availability will be ended on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada prior to the Online News Act taking effect,” Meta said in a statement. Facebook had telegraphed such a move for weeks, saying news has no economic value to the company and that its users do not use the platform for news. [...]

Okay, look, they talk to a Google rep in some of the video clips, but I give it a pass because this FREE course is a good baseline for personal internet safety that so many people just do not seem to have anymore. It's done in short video clip and article format (the videos average about a minute and a half). This is some super basic stuff like "What is PII and why you shouldn't put it on your twitter" and "what is a phishing scam?" Or "what is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS and why do you care?"
It's worrying to me how many people I meet or see online who just do not know even these absolute basic things, who are at constant risk of being scammed or hacked and losing everything. People who barely know how to turn their own computers on because corporations have made everything a proprietary app or exclusive hardware option that you must pay constant fees just to use. Especially young, somewhat isolated people who have never known a different world and don't realize they are being conditioned to be metaphorical prey animals in the digital landscape.
Anyway, this isn't the best internet safety course but it's free and easy to access. Gotta start somewhere.
Here's another short, easy, free online course about personal cyber security (GCFGlobal.org Introduction to Internet Safety)

"He didn't have anything to hide, he didn't do anything wrong, anything illegal, and yet he was still punished."

"At least 60% use their name or date of birth as a password, and that's something you should never do."

"Crossing the road safely is a basic life skill that every parent teaches their kids. I believe that cyber skills are the 21st century equivalent of road safety in the 20th century."

Having to explain to my mom that 5min crafts is a content farm/what that is. That sure they have some genuine hacks, but a lot are genuinely dangerous and bad
It's like I'm not trying to be the parent, but I've been on the internet daily since I was 9 years old and you respectively have only been on it for maybe 8 years? Consistently? And only on Facebook. Like man the shit I have seen has aged me a lot more mentally than I care to admit.
It's so hard too bc I know I should like a know it all/conspiracy freak when I tell her not to get a reddit bc she's gonna get sucked into a WS cult and get radicalized, or when I tell her Facebook reels is the same as tiktok. Which she has continuously forbade me to have since it came out (bc evil chinese company. It's okay when it's an evil American company though). That she needs to be careful and not just believe whatever she sees, but it's like for once I DO know more and I DO need to be the adult.
Like I remember having so many fucking talks to get her out of that SAVE THE CHILDREN shit and debunking the wayfair shit, and the Hillary Clinton shit, and all this shit. I constantly am telling her "nope that's antisemitism in disguise, heres why" ab stupid theories and shit and why they're harmful and it's like I want to fucking scream
Idk where I was going with this but like god I'm tired
#and she gets mad when im 'parenting' her and its like well then fucking use your brain!!! think before you share shit! ask questions!!!!#had to explain that the reason jfk had a diff coffin on air force one wasn't like a body swap but bc the first casket wasnt secured right#and the man was LEAKING in the fucking casket and they had to get a clean easier to transport one#that it was his family that didnt want it open not the gov like the man had half a fucking head at that point!! what did you expect?!#and then shes like well how do YOU know all this shit. how do you know YOURE right and Its like bc i check my sources?? bc i know how to??#bc i actually use my brain and dont sit in a digital echo chamber validating what i want to hear#thankfully we dont actually get fox in our house somehow (god probably) and we dont have cable so she cant watch fox & friends#but Facebook is it's own fucking up hill battle and it's like go back to playing 1010! and shit on your phone instead#and she stays on Facebook for that dopamine hit and its like i know you have adhd and your dr doesnt believe you but for godsake#i stg she's the reason my body hair is still turning white. it initially stated bc my dad was causing us so much fucking stress and then#it lessened a bit but now im finding more and more like my body is eating the pigment sgdgdgdgd#im gonna go gray by 35 i stg i have ONE white hair on my head and have gotten several on every part of my body like eyebrows and armpits ect#the funniest is leg hair like oh okay go grandpa#ANYWAYS im tired and i guess i needed to get this out#marquilla

In light of an uptick in the discussion about banning Tiktok, and "all apps steal your data!" I went into a bit of a search on how much data, comparatively, the different apps collect.
Tumblr media
Link to source: DailyMail (I know. But their source is Internet 2.0, a reputable cybersecurity organization.)
So uh. Yikes. Like, I know people talk about how much of your data FB collects, but compared to Tiktok??? Even compared to Instagram, which is also owned by FB! You'll want to delete quite a few apps of higher concern before deleting FB for collecting your data.

Deleted my Instagram art account yesterday (@/luciolefire_art) and all of my posts on my main Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Why?
Meta's new AI shit is trained on all Instagram posts, and there is no opt-out. You can't turn it off, and you can't stop it from using your work (and images of YOUR FACE AND BODY) to feed into its own images. It's implemented into the Instagram and Facebook search bar too-- and on Messenger you can't even search emojis/stickers without GENERATING MULTIPLE AI IMAGES.
The fact that my face, my art, and various pictures I've posted throughout my life on multiple accounts are being used to feed a generative AI is a horrific dystopian concept.
Fuck Meta.

A quick FYI on the risks of mobile apps using in-app browsers. Some apps, like TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, inject JavaScript code into third party websites that cause potential security and privacy risks to the user.
So when you click a web link it doesn’t just record you clicking the link, but EVERYTHING you then do in that browser session [x]

We are Chosen
We saw “The Chosen”, Series 4, 5 & 6 on Sunday night at the theater. As we watched the beauty of Jesus and his disciples and their comradery, I was reminded of the importance of friendships. But I also saw Jesus, in the movie, become quite frustrated at those knuckle-headed disciples who kept messing up. Oh, the patience of Jesus! Oh, that we had His fortitude AND patience! Yesterday, I blogged…
