HypnoToad! 👁👁 Check out that camouflage! I believe this is a Coastal Plains Toad/Gulf Cost Toad. (Incilius Nevulifer) I was doing some gardening a few months back, when I was in Louisiana, and came across this toad. It was found under a pot that I had set on top of the mulch, in the flower bed. It took me a few days or so before I finally got around to planting the new purchases and this one made itself at home in the meantime. I careful moved it to another pot and continued with my gardening. I’m sure being forcefully moved out of its room in the middle of the day garnered a less than stellar review rating. 😅 It rained really heavily that night. The next day, I checked around for this toad and it was gone. Another beautiful home that I walked by in La Jolla, California. I mean look at that magenta colored bougainvillea! It is humongous! They do so exceptionally well there. Swipe to see the bougainvillea and the front door from the other side! We can grow them in Austin, too, but they need to be protected from the frost, so I have seen people growing them in pots and bringing them in over the winter time. The Monster Gourd by MullensBranchFarm

This is a terrible picture of it, but it's our current monster gourd. It's particularly great because the vine grew over a corner bush, and it hung gourds like a real life set of christmas ornaments in fall colors. This one happened to get a lot more water and rain than previous batches and is easily twice as big already as any of our others. Gourd season. =] For future notes, in terms of : Grow what grows without you fighting for it's life, gourds are a go. They've been neglected, pest attacked, came down with diseases, all sorts of stuff this year and still made us a small pile of gourds. My kind of plant. The kind you can egregiously neglect and it still makes something for you. I'm not personally capable of caring for any sensitive and delicate kind of plants this year, or honestly almost ever, with my general tendency to be distracted in key need water times of year or disappearing acts, so the decorative gourd vine gets my fullhearted stamp of approval.   Plant seed. Water if you remember. Neglect generally. Occasionally weed. Produces. Winning plant right here. Uses: Decorative fall stuff. They really are pretty. Ate some seeds last year. Made paper from the dried husk, but it's rather intensive and not recommended, can use the dried husk as planters, temp bowls, cups, and sort of bird houses. Not the best thing ever, but for the amount of effort expended in its survival, it's freaking great.

3/4 cup of dried beans left to soak in the fridge too long - sprouted. So we planted them. As you do. 🥴🙄🙃 That was last spring. ⚜️ The bean vines ate the entire front porch whole, their sticky tendrils stopped the rocking chair in mid-rock and gobbled up another chair like so much green expansion foam. Being on the front porch was like being in the witness protection program - nobody could even see you. Unfortunately, you’d also be surrounded by a sea of green fingers all reaching for you and pulling at the cloth of your clothing. I had to pull my skirt free many times. 🌱🌱🌱 ⚜️ These crazy vines were LOADED with bean pods. Loaded!! ⚜️ Today, we took back our porch from the beans and their sticky fingers. It took a few hours to hack them down, they had grown clear up the porch to the roof. It’s insane that 3/4 of a cup of beans would have this incredible yield! ⚜️ We both sat down and started shelling beans. Um. This isn’t exactly an interesting activity. We both shelled beans forever and ever, amen. Coda, chorus, verses 1-12, chorus, chorus. We didn’t even get them all shelled. ⚜️ I feel a little guilty about that. All this bounty, and neither of us with the time or will to pick the beans out from between the squidjy stringy pods. We’ve really been keeping the dehydrator busy these last few days between drying tea and beans, and the popcorn is getting ready to harvest as well. ⚜️ This garden thing is work, but it’s also really quite interesting. And I can’t believe I’m saying this, but beans fresh out of the pod are really quite beautiful. They dry into dull little hard things, but right when they are fresh, they are really kinda pretty and cool. ⚜️ Next time you put beans on soak, please remember to make your recipe the following day - because those things are a force of nature and are fully capable of eating the porch right off your house. Keep your wits about you. These beans mean business!
