A Rose By Any Other Name || Part Two
Tumblr media
part one part three
series pairing: tommy shelby x reader, hints of john shelby x reader, hints of tommy x lizzie
summary: After your interaction with Tommy, there is a rift between you and Lizzie but an apology and the Epsom Derby threaten to strain your friendship further.
warnings: 18+ minors dni, mentions of prostitution, mentions of sex, alcohol consumption, typical peaky blinders content, (slow burn sorry)
author’s note: Thank you to everyone who read part one and interacted! There's no smut just yet but be patient it's coming (and so are Tommy and reader ;) !!!) Also I picture Thelma to look like Queenie from Fantastic Beasts but interpret her however you please <3 Enjoy!
After the ordeal with the Shelby brothers, The Garrison felt off-limits. Lizzie wasn't exactly pleased when she found out, and so you and Thelma decided to spend the night at The Marquis of Lorne.
The Marquis was packed, wall to wall with rowdy men and women from the BSA. You weren't planning on working tonight but, if the right man came along, you were in no position to turn him down.
The only upside of the job is that you didn't work in a whorehouse. People, however cruel, were even crueller to whorehouse whores. There was a strange level of acceptance, as if the men soliciting you could forget you were a working girl because they met you in places they meet regular women.
"Apparently there's a secretary job going," Thelma looked around the room at the smartly dressed women, "At the BSA."
"Have you applied?" You asked, sipping your gin. Employment was a sore subject between the two of you. Nobody whores unless they're desperate.
Thelma shakes her head and fiddles with the placemat under her glass. She draws her bottom lip between her teeth, her eyes fixed on the table.
"I wouldn't get it anyway."
"Why not? You can type, you can count, you're friendly-"
"I'm a whore," Thelma interrupted, amusement and hurt swimming in her eyes, "These women in here would be my colleagues. They don't think I'm worth the sheets I was born on... Sorry, we're supposed to be having fun."
Thelma blinked quickly and sat up straight, grinning, "Fuck it. Fuck them all."
She raised her glass and you met her toast.
"Fuck them all," You laughed, taking a large swig of your drink. The clear liquid burning your throat as you swallowed and exhaled.
Offering to get the next round of drinks, your attention was pulled by a heated argument by the bar. Two men in suits were subjected to verbal abuse from a drunken BSA worker.
One of them was a Blinder. You recognised him from The Garrison.
In a split second, fists were flying and knuckles were bloody. The Blinder and his friend were outnumbered but they held their own. Fruitlessly, the owner yelled from behind the bar for them to stop.
A table was knocked on its side as two men wrestled onto it and landed on the floor. Glass shattered somewhere in the room and the patrons of the bar tried to run.
Grabbing Thelma's hand, you yanked her to the exit. The crisp cold air of Small Heath seeped through your coat as you hurried towards Garrison Lane.
"Y/N?" Thelma asked once she realised the direction you were headed in.
"The Peaky Blinders need to know that two of their men are outnumbered," You replied, compelled by the power of the gangsters for the first time. They would fix this.
"What about Lizzie?" Thelma was now walking alongside you, matching you step for hurried step as you turned the corner.
The amber lights of The Garrison illuminated the pub and you rushed towards it like a moth to a flame.
Yanking the wooden door open, you pushed your way through the crowd, looking back to check Thelma was still with you. The door of the snug was open and three of the four Shelby brothers sat playing cards. Lizzie was tucked into the corner, chatting to Esme.
You lingered there for a moment before knocking lightly. All eyes turned to you, and Thelma gave a little wave. Lizzie's eyebrows shot up but she quickly neutralised her expression.
"Hello lovely," Arthur's voice boomed as he leaned back in his chair, "What do we owe the pleasure?"
"There's a fight at The Marquis. A Blinder and a boy. They didn't start it," You answered, the night's drinking deterring any nerves.
"But we'll finish it," John tossed his cards onto the table.
The three brothers got to their feet but Finn was shoved back into his seat.
"Nobody breathes a bloody word of this to Polly," Arthur threatened, his booming voice bouncing off the walls, "We will tell Tommy when he's back, alright?"
No Tommy? You assumed Lizzie turned down your offer tonight to spend her time with him. You were more confused than hurt, but the Blinder family was a family you had no desire to understand.
"When- When will Thomas be back?" You held your head high despite a wave of embarrassment rushing over you, "I owe him an apology."
"Don't know. Rich women are mad for working class cock these days," Arthur chuckles deeply, gulping down the contents of his glass and slamming it down, "I reckon he'll be back tomorrow."
Out of the corner of your eye, Lizzie shifts in her seat and straightens the skirt of her dress.
"I shall see you tomorrow then," You confirmed before the two men from The Marquis stepped into the snug, with scuffed knuckles and bloody collars. They smirk and grin at each other.
"We'll leave you," You nodded and disappeared out of the snug, back onto Garrison Lane.
Thelma giggled, "They certainly are intimidating."
You laughed a sigh of relief, surviving another interaction with the Shelby brothers. The door of The Garrison swiftly swung open and shut, as Lizzie joined you, pulling her coat on.
"Yeah yeah I'm a fool," Lizzie scoffed, sadness in her eyes.
"Who's the rich woman?" Thelma asked, hooking her arm around Lizzie's. Your eyes widened.
Lizzie lit a cigarette, "May Carleton. A toff who trains his horse. Rides his cock too. You don't have to apologise. I'm well shot of him."
Despite her foolishness when it comes to Thomas Shelby, you appreciated her forgiveness but there wasn't a world where you weren't going to apologise.
Three of the Shelby brothers witnessed your declaration and frankly you were afraid of the consequences of not following through.
The following afternoon you found yourself walking towards Shelby Company Ltd. There was a Blinder stood by the door, smoking a cigarette.
"Hello. I'm here to see Mr Shelby. Is he here?" You asked the gruff-looking man, who looked you up and down. Making his decision, he pushed the door open, eyes not leaving your body.
Being a whore really does get you in anywhere.
Inside was a foyer with gorgeous paintings decorating the walls and another set of double doors with Shelby Company Ltd embossed on the frosted glass.
With no sense of direction, you pushed through the double doors to find a few steps leading you down to two desks, facing one another.
"Y/N?" Lizzie's brow furrowed as she rose from her desk to greet you at the bottom of the steps, "What you doing here?"
"I promised Arthur and John I'd apologise. Is he here?" You winced.
"They won't cut you," Lizzie smiled, laughing softly, "He just got back. Oh, this is Michael, he's Polly's son."
Lizzie motioned to the desk opposite hers. The boy from The Marquis sat behind the large desk in a clean, pressed suit.
"Hello Michael, I'm Y/N," You reached for his outstretched palm and shook his hand.
"I remember," Michael smiled, youthful mischief danced in his eyes, "Thanks for the help last night."
"You looked like you needed the help," You joked, pulling a laugh from him.
"Alright, Tommy isn't paying you to flirt with my friend," Lizzie teased, guiding you to the doors of Thomas' office and knocking. After a moment, she pushed the door open and you followed her in.
"Y/N to see you," Lizzie announced, leaving you alone with him before he could respond. Thomas sat behind his desk, staring at the phone with a cigarette hanging from his lips.
The door closing jolted him from his reverie and he moved an opened envelope into the top drawer of his desk. Thomas cleared his throat and looked to you, taking a drag from his cigarette.
"Take a seat, Miss Y/L/N," His gravelly voice rumbled from deep in his chest, motioning to a chair opposite with his hand.
Sitting in the plush leather chair opposite him, you crossed your legs and braced yourself under his burning gaze.
"Drink?" He nodded to the glass decanter of whiskey on his desk, an already half-full glass sat beside it. Thomas rose to his feet and rounded the desk, retrieving another glass from a cabinet by the window.
Finding your words, you nodded, "Yes. Thank you Mr Shelby." Maybe a drink in your system would loosen you up.
A soft scoff fell from the man's lips as he poured whiskey into your glass, pushing it across his desk towards you and collapsing into his chair.
"None of that, alright?" He stubbed out his cigarette in a glass ashtray, the smoke floating in the air in one wispy streak.
You sipped your whiskey and swallowed hard, "Of course Mr- Thomas. I stopped by to apologise... about the other night. You went out of your way to help me and it was wrong of me to- to slam the door in your face. So I'm sorry Mr- Thomas."
Thomas' blue eyes scrutinised you as silence hung in the air between you. Fiddling with the glass in your hand, you cleared your throat and ruminated over your apologetic words.
Worry washed over you as you entertained the possibility that he didn't accept your apology.
"Would- Would you accept a drink on me by way of apology?"
Thomas' head tilted to one side at that. A small smile toyed at the corner of his lips. You shifted in your seat under his gaze.
"That won't be necessary," He shook his head once and the metallic click of his cigarette case opening sounded in the space between you. He ran a fresh cigarette along his plump lips, deep in thought for a moment.
"Have you ever been to the races, Y/N?"
Your brows shot up and your breath caught in your throat. Was he asking what you thought he was?
You shook your head and Thomas nodded, "I'll pick you up Saturday 9 o'clock."
Was this his was of accepting your apology? A favour for a favour? You weren't going to get on his bad side a second time and so, with confusion and apprehension, you agreed.
"I don't have anything nice to wear," You shyly admitted, a weak attempt to save yourself from further involvement with the Shelbys.
Admittedly, you were intrigued by the man before you. It brought a sense of shame but there was something captivating about the Peaky Blinders, especially Thomas Shelby.
Thomas reached into his pocket and thumbed through a sizeable roll of notes. He set two notes onto the table and tapped his index finger against the paper. Okay so you were definitely going to the Epsom Derby.
"9:00 Saturday, alright?"
"Yes Mr Sh- Thomas."
"Since we're going to Epsom together, you can call me Tommy, eh?" A small smirk tugged at the corner of his pink lips as he leaned back in his chair.
"Of course. I'll see you on Saturday Tommy," You smiled politely and made your leave. Anxiety rose within you as you passed Lizzie's empty desk, anticipating her reaction to your alarming news.
Wondering how you were going to tell her the man she loves is taking you to the races, you hurried out of the building and headed home.
You've only encountered Thomas Shelby on two separate occasions and it was clear that he was going to be the death of you.

“It looks like the one you had when you were little, mama!”
Those damn words started it all.
The salt and pepper chihuahua Eva arrived in Small Heath with had been old and sickly, but well cared for but the witch who had had Xoco since she was eleven years old.
It had a diamond necklace, for fuck’s sake.
Now this dog, also named Xoco, had been foisted upon him when the girls and their mother went shopping while he was meeting with the ministry of trade during their holiday in Mexico.
He had said no, Eva’s younger cousin Maddy, had given her two xolo dogs named Aristotle and Pesechat thus bringing them to four fucking dogs.
This did not include Charlie’s cats, their horses and the other animals that they had taken in at Arrow House.
“No, means no, sweetheart.” Tommy had been adamant, stood his ground and soon the matter was forgotten.
Except it wasn’t.
Flora cried the entire drive back to Chapultepec Castle, Diane glared at him until he sent them to their room, and even worse, Eva claimed to have a headache that night.
The first two he could weather; Charlie had gone through a phase where his tantrums had him questioning whether he could break his rule about no corporal punishment.
Thomas Michael Shelby enjoyed sex far too much to have his wife deny him.
Those months they were separated had been torture, but not enough to consider cheating on her because then she would kill him --- and he would have let her. And now having her deliberately do this while he is having to actually work this entire week is just cruel.
“Fine, the girls can have the rat they found on the street.” He said the next evening after Eva upped the ante by not wearing a damn thing to bed.
This had been preceded by Florence stealing all his glasses and Diane cutting holes in his pockets and both girls joining together to ruin the meeting he had before noon.
They returned home with the ugliest and most annoying dog he has ever had.
And yet, unlike the rest of the dogs –especially Cyril, that fucking traitor--- Xoco ,with it half-bitten little ears, incessant barking and need to leave to do her business outdoors through only the front door, had stuck to him like glue.
“That is the ugliest thing I have seen. Is that a diamond collar?” Ada said when she sees the little dog following him into the office and laying down protectively in front of his desk.
As if little Xoco could be of any protection.
“Yes, the girls picked her up in Mexico. She likes me for some fucking reason.” He said knowing his sister is trying not to tease him about it as he rubs his eyes.
This is made much worse when Xoco barks and snarls at his sister as if she were to attack him.
And when Ada doesn’t back off, the lapdog proceeds to attack.
It is a funny sight, seeing his sister shriek and retreat because a dog the size of rat is threatening to bite her, going as far as jumping at her hoping to get more than just her ankles.
“Call her off, Tom. This isn’t funny.” His sister said going as far as jumping into the chair to avoid being bitten by the little beast.
And he does, only after having a good laugh he hasn’t had since before France.

Ever since you were ten years old, everyone around you commented on the same thing.
You would marry the boy next door. Tommy Shelby.
He had been your playmate since the most tender infancy, being born one day after the other, you being the oldest of the pair, which you would use against him every time you had the chance.
He had treated you like another mate, despite being the only girl of the Watery Lane’s rascals gang. He taught you to climb trees, shoot rats with a slingshot and whistle different tunes to attract birds. You taught him how to feed said birds from his hand and to steal sweets and fruits from the market’s stands while you distracted the owners.
Everyone down Watery Lane noticed the special connection you two seemed to share. While some neighbours advised your mother that boys and girls should not mix up, for fear of spoiling your upbringing and reputation, others smirked for themselves and augured a future where you two shared a house down the road and half a dozen children swarming around you.
You were 13 when Thomas taught you to ride your first horse, your knees trembling as you tried to hold onto the shiny chestnut colt he had borrowed from a Lee boy during the fair. Sensing your uneasiness, and fearing you might fall and injure yourself, Tommy hopped onto the animal’s back behind you, circling your frame with his arms as he held the reins and led the beast into a peaceful trot down the bank of the river. When you let the horse rest, you two sat together under the leafy branches of an oak, in a tattered blanket you had brought from home, and snacked on blackberries from some nearby bushes and clear water from the spring. He gave you a makeshift bouquet of wild poppies and daisies; you had never felt your heart leap so strongly in your chest.
He was your Tommy and you were his Poppet.
Often you two would sneak out in the middle of the night and let your hearts run free. From climbing onto rooftops to bathing in the cut, or sneaking to his Uncle Charlie’s yard to help Curly deliver a foal, the night was yours to own and do as you pleased, away from judging comments and criticising eyes. Even if it lasted for just a few short hours, they were just for the two of you, the King and Queen of town.
The years passed, the two of you grew, so did everyone around you. As everyone expected, you became his sweetheart, and he became the envy of the block, having the sweetest piece of woman Small Heath could offer on his arm. The days flew by, the months became years, and people began to murmur. Why weren’t you two getting married? Why hadn’t Tommy proposed? The nagging gave way to the gossip. Maybe one of them lacked commitment? Maybe Tommy had found a fault with the lady? Or maybe she had found flaw in perfection?
Truth be told, none of you were in a rush. Tommy wanted to build a career and business before focusing on a family, and you had no desire to dedicate your young years to become a housewife. None of you had much money to spare anyway, and you wished for something a bit better than borrowed clothes and an appointment in the registry office. You may not be engaged yet but you had dreams. You wanted a nice party and a pretty dress, and he wanted a celebration that would be remembered for years. And in order to achieve the stars, you had to be patient.
But life had other plans.
You knew about the unrest in the continent. You heard the news of the assasination of the archduke and his wife. But you and everyone around you carried on as usual, too preoccupied with daily life to worry about those living thousands of miles away. Sure, a member of a royal family had been murdered, so what? How could it affect you, in a small town on an island not even remotely close to them?
You had held onto those hopeful thoughts all the way down to that day. You were in your parents' kitchen, chopping vegetables for dinner when a young boy ran down Watery Lane, tightly clutching a piece of paper, and hollering at the top of his lungs that the Kingdom had declared war on Germany. People rushed towards their homes in such a haste you would have believed they had the troops on their tails. You tried to keep up with dinner, but your hands trembled so violently you sliced off the top of your index.
You didn’t see any of the Shelby brothers for three days.
And when Tommy showed up, he knocked on your door like he would do any other day, leaning into the doorframe, with his hand stuffed in his pocket like he had been away for just half a day. You would have smacked him with his cap if you hadn’t been so happy to see him. Truth be told, you had already experienced nightmares of the war generals sneaking into town in the middle of the night and dragging him out of his bed and straight into Germany.
You two sat in the small kitchen, your hands laced around a cup of tea and his hands over yours.
“Where did you go?” Your voice trembled at the end
“Tried to run away”
That answer took you aback. You hadn’t expected something like that from him, and by the expression he bore, neither did he.
“After the declaration, Polly told us to leave. Pack our bags, get on the road with the Lees or the Boswells, lay low until things have calmed down, no matter how long it takes. And we considered it, honestly. She wouldn’t let us go out the house, in case the recruiters came. I actually thought about running away, but that's not who I am. That’s not who I want to be. I don’t want to go down in history as one of the cowards. I want to be one of the heroes. So I will be enlisting”
That’s all it took for you to break down crying. You knew Tommy had a knack for hopeless causes, and he always seeked for the greater good. You had dreaded he would want to enlist before the war office came to drag him. But you had hoped you’d have a bit more time.
“Hey hey, no need for tears, I am not dead yet, am I?” His dark humour didn’t help, making you in fact cry harder. He placed his index under your chin, gently lifting your face so you’d met his gaze “I will go. I will fight. And then I will return and we will get married with all the pomp and pageantry you deserve”
And so he went off for his training alongside his brothers. Two weeks before he was due to depart, he asked for your picture to carry with him, close to his heart. You agreed, only with the condition that he’d take a photo with you, so you too would have something to carry close to your heart. He protested, but agreed nonetheless. Anything to help ease your pain. You got four pictures, two of you wearing your best Sunday dress, and two of you together, him standing behind you with his hands on your shoulders.
The last day you had, you decided to ditch everyone around you, packed a basket and went to the river, for the sake of the old times. With a bottle of beer, a bunch of fruit and the same blanket you used ten years prior, you dedicated the last hours for yourselves. There was a lot of kissing, and also a lot of tears. Tommy promised over and over he would return, and entertained you with stories of the future that awaited you, with a nice house, a dog, and no less than three children playing in the garden.
As the sun began its descent, tinting the waters and the sky of a deep red hue, you pulled from your pocket a small box, neatly tied with white ribbon, and presented it to him. Tommy raised his eyebrow, but without asking, undid the bow to reveal the present.
Inside, nested in white cotton balls, laid a locket. Oval shaped, with a smooth, silvery surface. Tommy popped it open, only to find inside a picture of yourself on one side, and on the other, a lock of your hair shielded behind glass.
“I know you have my picture” You explained, meeting his puzzled gaze “But pictures can get wet or be lost or destroyed. I want you to have me close, as will I” You pulled out from your neckline your own locket, heart shaped, containing his picture and an empty space. Tommy got the hint. He grabbed his pocket knife and snipped the strand which usually fell over his forehead, just a small curl, enough to fill in the space. Now he had as much of you as you had of him.
“This is a promise locket. Because that locket and that hair is mine. I am lending it to you, so you have to promise to come home to give it back” Despite the painful tightening in your chest, you managed to crack a smile. Tommy leaned in for a kiss, his hand resting on the curve of your hip, slowly descending as the kiss deepened.
Five minutes later, the heart locket was the only thing you had on.
~
4 years of waiting. Four years of anxiety, sending letters every month, and getting replies every 3 to 4 months. Opening the front door every time the mailman walked down the lane, hoping that this time he’d stop at your door, while at the same time drearing receiving a very different kind of letter. The first two years, his letters were filled with sweet nonsense, pouring his love in the paper and adding small anecdotes of the trenches. But over time the letters became shorter, colder. You tried to blame it on the stress, the lack of time, any excuse at all, while you eased your worry by keeping busy helping Polly with the business and looking after Finn and Ada.
It wasn’t until the first days of 1916 that he was granted leave, and you saw him for the first time. You were the only one waiting in the station, since the kids were at school and Polly didn’t want to close the shop. The train came to a halt with a screech, and soldiers poured from the doors like an avalanche, onto the open arms of weeping wives and mothers. You scanned the crowd for him, panic bubbling in your stomach when you couldn’t find him. Perhaps he had missed the train? Or his leave had been cancelled? The station had almost emptied completely when you saw him, but you had to look twice to recognize him. Could that be Tommy? Your Tommy? His sunken face and gaunt complexion resembled more a man on his deathbed than a twenty something year old. He sported a thin cut alongside his left cheekbone, and walked with a limp. He had seen you too, but made no effort to approach you, waiting for you to run to him. When you clashed into his chest, he circled your frame with his arm, but his body felt stiff, and the embrace cold.
Still, you wiped your tears and got the best of the ten days he would be home. You cooked his favourite meals, forewent a few commodities to afford him a bottle of nice whiskey, and generally went out of your way to make his visit pleasant. But something seemed off in him. Something had changed. Not only had his body thinned and his voice deepened, perhaps the effect of cheap spirits and toxic fumes, but something deeper seemed to be off as well. The only way you could describe it was that he had lost the joy to live. Good food and drinks had no effect on him, and not even when you laid on his bed, tangled in his sheets wearing only your promise lockets, did he show any more emotion. He had also begun to sleep during the day and keep vigil at night, his pale eyes fixated on the wall until dawnbreak.
You didn’t see him again until the end of the war.
For months, no letter arrived, nor from him nor from the war office. You heard at home the horrors of the battles of Verdun and the Somme, only known through those who lived it, since the newspapers refused to publish anything that could tamper with the people’s spirits, and even the letters sent home were subject to censorship. The more days passed, the more your worry grew. You were forced to remind yourself that no news was better than bad news, and perhaps Tommy just hadn’t found the time to write, or had run out of pencil and paper.
It wasn’t until the beginning of 1917 that you heard from him again. He had received leave and decided to spend it in the north of France, claiming he didn’t have enough days to make the journey back worthy. You tried to understand, but you felt the pain in your heart nonetheless. Perhaps it felt too painful for him, coming back home knowing he’d have to leave once again. Perhaps he wished to rest and did not want to make the journey home and back for just a couple days.
Perhaps he had found a better company in France.
You pushed those unfounded accusations to the back of your mind, keeping them under lock and key. How could you think that way of Tommy? He loved you, and he would never betray your trust like that.
Right?
His lacklustre writing got you through the war, still clinging desperately to every strand of his love you could. When peace finally came, you awaited eagerly for his return and for your life to go back to normal. But you couldn’t have imagined what normal meant.
You gave the army a man and they gave back a corpse. A living, breathing, soulless corpse. If you didn’t know better, you could have sworn they sent you the wrong man. This…person, the thing he had become, he wasn’t your Tommy. He wasn’t the one you had fallen in love with.
None of them came home the same, truth be told. But obviously your attention focused on the one you cared about. You could bear some aspects, like the nightmares and the initial paranoia. But some became unmanageable. The opium, the alcoholism, the violence.
The coldness.
It felt as if romancing a snowman. Everything inside Tommy had gone cold; not just his joy to live, but also his relationships with others. With his aunt, with his brothers, and with you. He hadn’t ended things with you, perhaps out of respect for your unwavering loyalty, but he might as well have and once and for all end your misery.
You slept with him for several nights after his return, but he would always be gone before you awoke, and would only take you to his room after dark, as if you were a cheap alleway whore and not the one he had wanted once to marry. During the days you seldom saw him, with his mind buried in the business, or perhaps still buried in the French mud. You had simply faded into the background of his life.
For your own sake, and to not let ten years of your life go to waste, you endured. You could turn a blind eye to his crooked ways, and even could pretend that the pretty barmaid from the Garrison wasn’t batting her eyelashes at him every time their eyes met, much to his apparent delight. You could pretend that you didn’t hear from Arthur that Tommy caught the fucking clap in France.
But you couldn’t deal with the violence.
His anger, rarely incurred before the war, seemed ready to lash out at any moment now. Even the slightless things sent him into madness. His hand didn’t waver to shoot an inconvenient person, or to blind them with those godforsaken blades he had sewed into his cap. It became the murmur of the town that the new copper was after him, and they even said he had killed two men inside the Garrison, before leaving with the pretty barmaid.
One particular day, he gave you a train ticket, and offered no more explanation that I’d do you good to be away for the day. Go to London, buy some clothes, get some fresh air. Of course you threw the ticket in the fireplace and stayed home all day, knowing he would be up to something if he wished to get rid of you so desperately. News reached you about the shootout in Garrison Lane. Orchestrated by a certain Billy Kimber after Tommy tried to sack him from the races. You knew he had been shot, but didn’t attempt to go and see him. He’d have plenty of company in the afterparty to keep the mind busy and the body warm. But you? You have had enough. You could ignore anything but this. This was just the beginning, and things would only get worse from here. And you hadn’t lived through a war, only to live the rest of your days in another one.
If this was the path Tommy wanted to take, you’d have to swallow your feelings and go the other way.
~
You were bent over your coarse kitchen table. Beads of sweat gathered at your temples and rolled down the crook of your neck, getting lost in the valley between your breasts. The curves of your body swayed in a slow cadence. You had spent the last 15 minutes working on that bread dough, kneading the sticky lump into shape, while the unforgiving summer sun heated up your tiny kitchen through the opaque window panes. The last thing you wanted to do was light up the stove, but homemade bread was considerably cheaper than store bought, and in the current situation, every penny counted. Oh, what you’d give to be laying under the shadow of an oak, enjoying the breeze and dipping your feet in the river.
A knock on the door pulled you away from your thoughts. You weren’t expecting any visitors, at least not any that would simply drop by unannounced. The force of habit made you open the door without looking through the peephole, and you found the entrance blocked by the imponent presence of the one and only, Tommy Shelby.
Not Tommy. Thomas. He had long ago stopped being your Tommy.
“Mr. Shelby, what brings you here?”  The formality in your tone made him flinch. Four years had passed since you walked away, and he still couldn’t get used to it.
“Mr. Shelby? My my, (Y/N) I believed ourselves to be past those formalities”
You were ready to tell him you were busy and send him off, but he decided to push past you and into the house, displaying his lack of care for social formalities.
“Make yourself comfortable, why don’t you?” You crossed your arms over your chest, watching him take a seat in the chair your husband sat in.
“Your husband came today to my office, you know?” Husband. Tommy had never used his name, Daniel. The few times he spoke to you or inquired to others about you, he only called him that. Husband. Trying to turn him into an object and not a human being.
“Did he now?” You asked, uninterested, as you wiped the table clean and covered the dough with a cloth to rise.
“Asking for money” Tommy spoke slowly, letting the words drag to test your reaction “A considerable sum, in fact” He had a triumphant smile, as if he had caught Daniel doing some evil thing and was now exposing him to you “Any idea why?”
You hesitated with your words, unsure on how to proceed. But he would find out sooner or later anyway.
“Babies are an expensive business and we need more space” You turned to face him, seeing the colours drain from his face. His pale eyes scanned your figure, stopping over your belly, covered by a white apron.
“You…”
“Why did you come here Thomas? To tell on my husband, hoping to expose him? To make me upset? What is it that you want?”
He stood and grabbed your hands, making you stumble and forcing you to hold onto him for support.
“That means this is our last chance” You were taken aback by the urgency in his voice.
“What do you mean our last chance?” You tried to step away, but he only held you tighter “We left our last chance behind many years ago. When you almost left to be with Grace in New York. When I told you I would be getting married. Now-”
“Is not too late yet” He cupped your face, and much to your dismay, his touch still sent sparks coursing through your skin “We can be together. We can be happy. I would raise your child as my own and no one needs to know”
Your knees trembled. Your mouth dried up. Had he come here, into your home, first wanting to put you at odds with your husband, and now to ask you to elope with him?
“Tommy” You spoke softly, hoping to reason with him “That is not okay. We cannot do that. Our time has passed. I have Daniel, you are due to marry Grace and have her son. Your son” He raised his eyebrows, puzzled. Officially Charles was the son of the late Mr. MacMillan, but you were no fool. The Shelby eyes never lie.
“Screw your husband. Screw Grace. I know you love me still. Isn’t it all that matters? I need you. We can grab our things and get away. Start over. Be together as we should have. Leave behind the gang, the business, our pasts. ”
Your lips trembled. A tear threatened to spill off the corner of your eye. A knot tightened painfully around your windpipe, making it hard to breathe.
“Tommy, I.. We…No. Is not the right thing. You can’t abandon your boy. And Daniel, he deserves the world, I couldn’t break his heart like that”
Tommy slammed his fist on the table “For fuck’s sake. Do you want to be happy? What is so good about Saint Daniel? He took you from me!”
You immediately became defensive, feeling anger seep into you, replacing your softer emotions. He actually had had the nerve to question your husband, instead of questioning how his own doings drove you away. You took a step back.
“He makes me happy. He loves me. He is a nice man. A nice, good, honest, hard-working man. He…”
“He’s not me. That’s the point, isn’t it? He’s safe. He is honest. He would never hurt a man, let alone kill him. He’s everything that I’m not”
His eyes scanned the room, going from the flowers Daniel had brought you and were now in a vase, to the embroidery frames with sweet little messages hung on the wall, and the two armchairs in front of the blackened fireplace; over the mantelpiece stood your wedding protograph. You saw longing in his features, longing at what his life could have been if circumstances had been different, if things hadn’t gotten in the way, if he had been different, if…
“Tell Daniel to forget about the loan” He couldn’t mask his defeat. Tommy had aged years in just a moment. He had never lost a fight, nor being kept from what he wanted. He had never known defeat. “It's a gift, for the baby. I’ll rip the paynote and we will forget about it” He opened and closed his mouth, wanting desperately to say something else but not daring to “If you ever need anything, and I mean anything at all, just call me. It doesn’t matter when or where, I’ll come to you. I’ll always come to you”
Tommy hesitated in the soles of his feet, not daring to breach the distance between you two. In the end he leaned closer, just enough to brush a kiss on your forehead. His lips lingered more than it was wise, and you caught a glimpse of silver peeking out from between his clothes. A silver necklace. Blinding pain shot through your chest, making you gasp for breath. You tried to reach out and touch the necklace, but he had already pulled away. He fixed his cap and left.
You rushed to the window, your teary gaze following him until he had disappeared from sight. Even after all those years, your knees trembled and your stomach tickled with butterflies in his presence. Heart aching for the man he had stopped being a long time ago. For the Tommy who had been buried in France and replaced with a new one. One you never knew.
Feeling weak and shaky, you went into your room and reached into your nightstand, pulling off the bottom of the drawer to reveal a small silver chest. It had been a while since you last opened it.
Inside were no riches or jewels or great secrets of the State. Only a bunch of pressed poppies, two lovers smiling from a faded picture, a dull heart locket, and all the dreams of what life could have been.

Yeah I can confirm zendaya is really great one of her best performances and really adds a needed depth to chani and shes easily the most emotionally complex character but more so zendaya really shines here particularly how conflicted she is both paul but also to her people. However I would be remiss to negelct the fact that this might be timothees best performance never knew he had it him, truly dark but absolutely magnetic. Austin is also amazing my jaw was dropped everytime he was on screen and this is one of the best villan performances since the joker in the dark knight, soooooooooo good will be remembered as cinemas greatest villans. Austin is gonna prove all the doubters wrong such a beast. Also rebecca and javier top tier performances particualaty rebecca a freaking force of nature on screen. 9/10
P.s. florence may have small role but makes the most of it, her eye acting is off the charts able to convey so much with the little screen time she has. Cant wait to see zendaya and florence in messiah really two of this gens most talented actresses on screen together its gonna be good.

Heeeyyyyyyy!!!! So glad our girl SHINES in this!!! 😁🙌🏾 Sounds like Z really brings it in this! I'm so glad! I know some people online were being negative and saying that she was going to be the weak link in the cast, so I'm so GLAD you and others are saying that Zendaya is a standout in this! WOOO HOO!!! 🙌🏾
However I would be remiss to negelct the fact that this might be timothees best performance never knew he had it him, truly dark but absolutely magnetic.

Well alright Timmy Tim! 😅👏🏾 I've been looking to finally see Timmy in a role that really "wows" me, and it seems like "Dune: Part 2" is finally it! I have heard that Timmy really stands out. Sounds like he goes a little to the "dark side" himself in this lol. I have heard that in Messiah his character is actually not that good... 👀
Star Wars SO stole from Dune lol 😂 It's the same thing.... "Fear is the mind killer".... "Love and attachment leads you to the Dark side". Anakin Skywalker was supposed to be "The Promised One" who would bring "balance to the force" lol..... Paul Atreides was the promised "Messiah" who would help the people, but turns lol. Etc....
Austin is also amazing my jaw was dropped everytime he was on screen and this is one of the best villan performances since the joker in the dark knight, soooooooooo good will be remembered as cinemas greatest villans. Austin is gonna prove all the doubters wrong such a beast.

Wowwwwww.... Anon, don't play with my emotions like this! 😭 Heath Ledger??? 😭
P.s. florence may have small role but makes the most of it, her eye acting is off the charts able to convey so much with the little screen time she has.

Florence always delivers, so I wasn't really worried about her lol. 🤭
This is exciting Anon! I really can't wait!
Let Dune Week begin! 😁

So there is this wlw monster girl manga called "Beauty and the Beast Girl" by Neji and I love it so much. One of the best monster girl yuris you will ever find and yes, Heath (monster lady) and Lilly (human lady) do fuck here and then but it feels like its done to help show how much they love and trust each other and not for the sake of horny. Finally some good fucking food!
So anyways my confession;
There is two side doujinshis and they are both short and sexy. In the second one I read, Heath decided to get a bit experimental and used her tail like a cock and... now I really want more content of monster women fucking their human girlfriends with their long and/or thick tails but they feel hard to find... I want a big monster lady to tailfuck me...

Hi, any recs with businesswomen?
Contemporary or fictional are also good but I am more interested in historical. Their struggle to establish themsleves and staying firm in the face of heavy disapproval and sabotage from everyone, tells us how much comfortable we are living of course women still face so many problems but we are much better off than them.
Something along the line of Nora Robert's Bride Quartet (Though I only like Vision in White, rest are kind of boring) so as a group or even if fmc is doing it on her own also works.
Thanks
For sure!
Lorraine Heath actually just did a book big on business--In Want of a Viscount. The heroine essentially inherited this invention/floundering business from her father, and the hero is a part of a group of investors she's pitching to. Her passion about being a businesswoman is a big part of the book.
Sierra Simone's Molly O'Flaherty books are big on how passionate Molly is about her business and what she's done to keep it afloat. She runs a shipping company. The series is VERY racy and SA does factor in as part of Molly's backstory that still haunts her, so be aware. However, I found her romance with Silas, the friend she realizes she's been in love with a long time, quite touching. And also hot.
When a Duke Loves a Woman by Lorraine Heath has a heroine who runs a tavern and is determined to stay independent, which is a big part of her internal conflict. She's also lower class, which I love.
In Grace Callaway's Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels, the heroines are all a part of a lady detective agency, basically (it is Charlie's Angels But Victorian). It's super delightful and I was really into the female friendships. The first four books are about the "employees" for want of a better word (I mean I honestly don't know if these girls get paid lmao) but the last one is about Charlie herself, who runs it. I really loved her attitude.
Melissa and The Vicar by S.M. LaViolette stars a heroine who runs a brothel (fairly and ethically). Looooove this book, though the heroine was sold into the trade as a child so be aware. M
In Which Winnie Halifax is Utterly Ruined by Alexandra Vasti focuses on a heroine who runs her own farm, which is why she's in the plot predicament she's in (to avoid issues, she made up a husband who happens to have the hero's name, and when he finds out years later that he apparently has a wife it's problematic). Not a huge part of the book, but an aspect I found added a fun spin to the romance.
The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy has a really interesting take. The heroine doesn't initially run a business, but she's American and inherits a castle that's basically crumbling and very in the red financially. So she's like "well, we either sell it or we make it financially feasible", which puts her at odds with the hero, a duke who a) doesn't want to admit she's inherited over him and b) is horrified that she wants to do things like give PAID TOURS!!! GASP! of the castle.
Hotel of Secrets by Diana Biller is GREAT on this front. The heroine runs her family's hotel, which has been passed down through the generations. But it's about to go under, so she's also scrambling to find a way to keep it afloat. It's a huge part of her character.
A Caribbean Heiress in Paris by Adriana Herrera--another great fit. The heroine is in Paris to essentially sell her family's rum distillery to investors and get them on board. An excellent example of what the historical romance genre can do with businesswomen if it wants to try.
Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas--the heroine is still in the early stages, but a huge part of her character is that she wants to build a BOARD GAME EMPIRE!!!!
Devil in Disguise by Lisa Kleypas--the heroine runs a shipping business she inherited from her late husband.
Brazen and the Beast by Sarah MacLean--a big part of this book is that the heroine is very excited about getting into the family business and pushing forward. Daring and the Duke also has a heroine who runs a business; she's a madame, but her club caters more to women. Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover also features a club-owning heroine.

HR with criminal heroes please
Sure, with a couple criminal heroines added in for good measure:
The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian: I'm halfway through this book and I'm in love with Kit and Percy; Kit used to be a notorious highwayman and Percy tries to hire him for a heist except Kit can't do it anymore, so he decides to teach Percy how to pull it off instead
The Last Crimes of Peregrine Hind by Sierra Simone: Another highwayman hero; Peregrine is out for *revenge* against the Duke of Jarell except he accidentally kidnaps the duke's younger brother Alexander..... who is very much into this entire kidnapping situation, and Peregrine.
Earl of Every Sin by Scarlett Scott: Sandy aka Alessandro aka EL CORAZON OSCURO is a Spanish guerrillero during the Napoleonic wars and deeefinitely a war criminal based on what some of the other heroes in this series say about his activities during the Peninsular War.
Her Wanton Wager by Grace Callaway: Gavin Hunt is a gaming hell owner with criminal beginnings and a lot of criminal goons so I think he qualifies; he is trying to find the heroine Percy's brother to make him pay his debts, but Percy negotiates with him to hold off by agreeing to a bet that he'll leave her brother alone if she can't be seduced. This is one of my favorites by Grace and I'd highly recommend.
Devil of Downtown by Joanna Shupe: The hero in this book is notorious kingpin/gentleman gangster Jack Mulligan who falls HARD for do-gooder/rich girl/wannabe cop Justine. Immaculate bad boy/good girl vibes.
Sarah MacLean's Bareknuckle Bastards series has 3 siblings all of whom jointly run a criminal enterprise out of Covent Garden. They're all stellar (and super hot) but Brazen and the Beast is by far my favorite— he's the king of the underworld and she's a kickass businesswoman who accidentally meets the hero while he's tied up in her carriage. Spoiler alert, this isn't the last time he's tied up in this book 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas: We're veering into mostly "used to be a criminal" territory here; Derek used to be a criminal as well as a prostitute at some point in the past and he used that money as capital for his gaming hell. He's one of those heroes who is painfully aware of his background which is why he thinks he isn't good enough for Sarah Fielding (and Lily Lawson for that matter).
The entire Scoundrels of St. James Series by Lorraine Heath consists of heroes/a heroine who used to be pickpockets/street urchin criminals. Here are my favorites in the series:
Surrender to the Devil by Lorraine Heath: One of my all time favorites by Lorraine; Frannie used to be a pickpocket before she was taken in by her friend's noble grandfather. The hero Sterling is immediately drawn to her despite her past (or perhaps in part because of it) and despite the instant chemistry, she really makes him work for it, which I so appreciate.
Between the Devil and Desire by Lorraine Heath: Another former criminal/thief, Jack Dodger someone ends up being named guardian to a young duke and basically has to co-parent with the dowager duchess Olivia. This has another variation on the class-difference trope— Olivia haaaaaates how attracted she is to Jack and Jack thinks she's a stuck-up prude, and yet they really can't help themselves.
Also! Lorraine's The Duke and the Lady in Red features a heroine who is a con artist and tries to pull one over on the hero, except he ends up offering her a looooot of money to sleep with him for a week.
I keep saying I'm going to reread this because the last time I had pandemic brain, but Scandalous Desires by Elizabeth Hoyt has a (river) pirate hero!

The new Monster High designs are cute but they feel just like really... sanitized? If that makes sense? Like, they’ve got no bite to them, no edge. And not to be a stickler for ‘oh grr it was better in the olden days’ since I recognize that me being an adult means that this is not aimed towards me, but part of the reason the original monster high dolls were so unique was because they were dark and had edgy fashion and weren’t overly cutesy like everything aimed towards girls is.
That said I love everything about Frankie, they are perfect and I refuse to hear a bad word about them (/lh) and Draculaura’s cute. I like the half and half look for her hair, I really like the shape of her eyes/eyeliner, and her big sunhat but I wish her outfit had more of a Victorian feel to it. And I will never understand the witchcraft thing. New reboot really said Casta Fierce? Never heard of her. I like how Cleo’s skintone is darker since she is Egyptian, and the gold eyes are cool and give her a more unnatural feel since she’s, y’know, supposed to be a monster. I don’t have any strong opinions about Deuce but I do like the snakeskin jacket and his painted nails. But I will always be so mad that they broke him and Cleo up and are trying to pair him with Clawdeen. Like I know Clawdeen was only confirmed a lesbian by a comment from the creator on Instagram but god fucking dammit Mattel. We’re not talking about Heath. And I’m sorry but I don’t really like what they did with Clawdeen although I do like the dog nose. Though I think that mostly has to do with me having the og version of her as my favorite character when I was younger so I will always be partial to that depiction of her. Also the half human thing they did with her... I’m really sorry but I don’t like it since like... werewolves are kinda already like that. Like, y’know human by day beast by night. But I dunno. And then with Lagoona... I’ve got mixed feelings about her. With her being from a Mayan civilization, I actually do think that the pink skintone works really well for her since it reminds me of a pink river dolphin but I think the change from original Lagoona to new Lagoona is pretty jarring which might be why a lot of people don’t like her. Though I will admit she is incredibly cute. I actually do like Torelai though her forehead is kinda big and I don’t like the implications of her description given what happens in the movie regarding Clawdeen being half human. Very icky. I also do not have any strong opinions about Bloodgood though I think her design is actually an improvement over how she originally looked mainly because I really love her new hair and all the horseshoes.
But honestly I’m just really sad about the loss of edgy goth fashion here. And the fashion is just lowkey really boring since it’s basically just normal clothes. Like the whole point of the original was giving them crazy, edgy alt fashion and now they’re just kinda bland.

i Got some questions for the werewolf au.
If volo is in the modern time is there a little Cynthia daughter of volo and cogita.
Do the werewolf in the au follow the same rules as other werewolf like full moon transformation and what happens when a human is attacked, bitten or scratch by a werewolf do they have werewolf side effects like gain a effects or 2 from the werewolf like hair growth, claws or sudden personality change or full werewolf transformation like in the movies.
I asking this because in the au Kieran takes a liking to Florian and be very clingy to him digging his claws into Florian's skin to Florian's likings and have to wrapped the scratch wounds. How would the teal mask story go without the Pokémon.
Is there a academy the twin players go to.
How would ms briar and her ancestor heath fit in the au both of them study the most important story plot in paldea, terapagos, tera crystal and area zero.
Nemona's family is rich and she have a who older sister taken over the family business and story for the au the older sister have a frame photo of her and her younger sister playing together when they are younger on her work table.
Even though Nemona's family is rich and snobby they still missed their Baby girl when she was lost during a camping trip in the forest, they set up a missing posters for her and pay high class trackers to find their nemona alive and would increase the prize money on her birthday and the day she disappeared, even though they are snobby rich on the outside they are sad on the inside missing nemona they would pay any amount of money to get there nemona back.
The family would go to the same place where nemona was first lost every year on her birthday where they leave a piece of her favourite birthday cake flavor and a birthday present as a offering if she passed away in the forest.
And the character Billy and o'nare in the teal mask dlc are heavily implied to be nemona'parents.
Any idea for perrin looking for the blood moon beast.
Is the trip to kitakami in the au still a field trip for the students to be looked after by ms briar.
Random thought. The fact that briar called jacq quite charming and like it when he be delightfully direct this sounds like briar has a liking to jacq and
what do you think of in the au briar having feeling for werewolf jacq.
Jacq the layed back cool fun teacher and briar a high class lady with manners with a serious lack of fun.
HOLY COW THIS IS A LOT! but thanks for your time typing this :D Sorry it took so long to answer, I needed time to sit down and look this over.
Like I mentioned before, Lycan's Plight (werewolf AU) does not take from the canon pokemon-verse, so pokemon and anything to do with time machine and the great crater does not exist in this world. Werewolves, in this world, do not infect other human if they are bit or scratch, but there has been experiments on a "what if" if human and werewolf DNA can combine (like with Arven, for example). Also, wolves can transform into their beast form at any point, without the aid of a full moon, but their strength does increase when there is one! -Easier to control their beast form.
The story with the twins (Juliana and Florian) and the sibling wolves (Carmine and Kieran) hasn't grown yet, just waiting for the second DLC to drop, but once I finish that, I could tackle their story in the AU.
I am actually in the camp of "Billy and O'Nare have nothing to do with Nemona and her family), so in the AU, they are not related either; although, I was thinking of an idea that one of them may have a werewolf fur coat... twisted, I know! Maybe they may know of the wild child and maybe know who her parents are. I do like the idea that her parents coming back to the place they last saw her in hopes she might return. Funny enough, something similar happen to Geeta when she was a pup; she was separated from her pack in a terrible snow storm and was alone until she found Rika.
Perrin will stay human and maybe wants to take photos of werewolves, maybe even finding proof that the wolves do live like humans did long ago, living in clans and having a culture; not all humans are bad.
As for Briar and Jacq, well, there has been cases of human and werewlves forming a "forbidden relationship", so maybe she might have a little bit of feels for the fuzzy Jacq lol
