Now, listen. For the most part, the English version of Guilty Gear Xrd is accurate. The majority of changes come from things that won’t make sense when translated literally, or to just make the sentences flow better in general/match a character usually talks. That said, there are a few times when it goes in genuinely a different direction to the original, and Bedman has… a particularly interesting instance of this!

So we all know his final lines, right?

“…this is all the life I have…left… …Must…atone.”

For the most part, these lines are used as a means of proving Bedman was ‘actually a good person’ and all that amongst fans. His desire to atone- well, the thought that he must atone at least- shows not just guilt, but willingness to change and fix what he’s done.

Well! This part is…quite different in Japanese, in terms of what he means!

“残りの命では、これが…… せめて……  ……罪…”

That last word, “罪”, is what I want you to focus on. This quote mentions nothing of atonement. That word’s meanings aren’t many, but they all have a pretty clear pattern to them: crime, sin, sentence, punishment. Bedman isn’t saying here that he must atone, he is saying that he is being punished for what he has done. Not that he should do anything about it, no, he acknowledges that he’s done something wrong and that’s… it. He dies calling himself a sinner, not wishing to be something other than that. So what does this mean for Bedman as a character? Well not very much if you've been reading the JP dialogue. But tl;dr: it's yet another crack in the idea that Bedman is truly a good person deep down.

Pulling her features in her to a neutral expression, she surveyed her surroundings; dismayed to realise she didn't know where she was or who she was talking to. Still, she wasn't about to give the other woman the upper hand.

Playing the other woman's question over in her mind, she thought about how best to get the information she needed without giving away she didn't have a clue what was going on.

"But of course, dear," Missy smiled, eyeing the curly haired woman up and down. "So tell me, what have you done to earn the pleasure of my company?"
