I know I always bitch about volunteering for dog events after we put on a big one but I'm going to bitch about volunteering for dog events.
Tldr: Treat your volunteers nicely or they'll quit.
Bitching under the cut.
There are certain people at our events who have strong opinions on how lure opping should be done and they are not shy about sharing criticisms. They're all the super hyper-competitive Whippet People. And like, I'm human. I mess up sometimes. If I don't stop the lure deep enough over the finish line that is 100% on me and I generally go "oh fuck" when it happens. I don't make that mistake often (like, once or twice a year), but it happens-- and it specifically happens because I really don't want to run the super fast dogs into the back wall, so I slow the lure early because judging distance is hard.
The non-Whippet People will let me know, I'll apologize, they'll say 'great!', and then we'll move on with our lives. The Whippet People will let me know, and then they'll ask their friends to let me know, and then every time they walk past me for the rest of the day they'll go "now remember that the dogs have to be going full speed over the finish line!" And they'll also bring it up the next day. Multiple times.
I asked a whippet person (lowercase letters) who lure ops for advice and she was like "yeah it happens" and gave some good advice and said I'm doing a good job. She said everyone messes up sometimes and shared a couple of her goofs.
So I don't need people to say thanks or give me accolades or anything. That's not why I'm volunteering. I volunteer because I enjoy dog sports, and dog sports run on volunteers, and if people stop volunteering then there will be no more dog sports and that will suck.
But I am not going to lie, when certain people, who do not lure op, only offer criticism, and bring that criticism up over and over and over, including when I am not making mistakes, and they never ever mention when I am doing a good job, which is the vast majority of the time, it makes me want to say "okay, you fucking do it" and walk to my car and drive home.

Okay but for real, please download Merlin, the Cornell-based bird-logging app. It is so great. It will tell you about birds in your area. It will make you so insufferable on hikes and outings. It doesn't have any comments section so if this site gets nuked do NOT try to find me there but know that that's where I'm hanging. Having a great time birdwatching. Logging the bluejay that bullies my cats. Helping researchers track where birds are for climate change-related population monitoring. 10/10, highly recommend getting a life and doing some silly birdwatching.

been thinking a lot about communal living and communal parenting which means I’ve been reading the Supernuclear substack since I found it and I can’t stop thinking about this post about raising several babies in a small intentional community. Supernuclear is by these people who started the community, Radish, and talks about the nuts and bolts of starting and running Radish (rules, financials, community building) as well as featuring stories about what worked and didn’t work in other communities. im thinking through the class assumptions of Radish, and some of the other communities Supernuclear features sound frankly unpleasant (thinking of this expensive- and disorganized-sounding college-dorm-ass small weed farm)
BUT! as someone who wants babies but is really scared about how demanding it is with the State Of Everything, i LOVE this post. Radish has “baby happy hour” every day when the babies are picked up from daycare and they hang out in the communal area with other people in the community. parents can spontaneously ask to leave a baby monitor with other folks so they can go out without paying for a sitter after their kid is asleep. “Even with a newborn, we see friends 5-7 nights a week. We go out to dinners and parties on a whim. And we have a dozen friends who are invested in our kid, share in their milestones, and feel 100% comfortable watching them for a hour or even a weekend.” girl the dream…….

After many years, guess who decided to try their hand at bookbinding again?
That's right, me! And of course I chose I giant of a fic, because I am nothing if not ambitious XD. I think it's 3 inches or more thick, and came to a whopping 1088 pages! The fic is Count Your Blessings by @madmothmadame , a Founders Era Tobirama centric fic and I cannot recommend it enough <3 <3 <3
My cover fabric and end paper are pretty simple, one part because I thought it suited the story, one part because I had them on hand, and one part because I'm a raw beginner and that's about as good as I could manage XD
It took a lot of waffling on my part (graphic design is NOT a great skill of mine) but overall I ended up really happy with how the title page came out - if I had the artistic skill to paint/draw it or the supplies to transfer it, this would have gone on the cover as well. Alas, for now it shall remain inside only.
A little detail that gave me some grief, as I waffled on font style and size a bit, but ultimately I'm really pleased with it - I used a plum blossom branch as the scene break throughout the book. If you've read the fic, you probably know why I picked that particular image for this and the title page ;)
I realized after printing that some of my paper had gotten a bit aged, even though it was stored in the printer. I wasn't about to waste the paper, ink and time for a reprint though, so I left it. Since the book is for me, little things like that are no bother. I was just glad I didn't fuck up in the printing or signature sewing order X'D
I included the authors notes from the end of each chapter as a bonus section at the end, so they'd be preserved with the story but not breaking up the flow of reading the book ^_^
Final view, this time from the spine - think I left the gap a little to wide between the cover boards and spine but eh, again this is just for me and only my third binding ever (and certainly the largest! XD) so I'm still really pleased overall.
A very fun experience, and I'm looking forward to my next re-read of the story, where I'll be doing it with my very own chonky boi version held in my hands :3

Hi.
Still bopping around just the brain got overwhelmed and needed less stimulation for a while so it’s been a lot of alone time with easy books and clearing off the dvr (do people still call it that?). Slowly I’m starting to feel closer to normal again though and I hope to be back here more soon.
