Intouchables and Last Twilight

So, when I was first watching the Last Twilight episode, something was bugging me about the choice of having Day in a wheelchair. Because it was a choice. And as I kept watching it, I kept feeling like I was missing something. My memory is terribly slow with these things, so it wasn't until I went back that I got it. Intouchables. So now, for some context. Intouchables is a french film from 2011 that tells the story of a french rich businessman that, after becoming quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, hires a young black man to be his carer. This is based on a true story. (Yes, there is an american version, but I haven't seen it so I can't speak to it.) If you've never watched this movie, go watch it, cause for sure Aof has watched it.

You can probably already see the parallels just from this small synopses. I'm gonna say too much about the movie, I'm just gonna talk about the similarities so far.

So we got our two main characters. Philippe and Driss. Philippe is our basic older rich white guy, with the palatial mansion and a hundred people servicing his every need. Also he's quadriplegic. Driss is the opposite side of all of this. He is poor, he lives off of unemployment benefits, his house is small and cramped, shared with family. So, Driss needs to look for a job to get the benefits, but he doesn't actually want the job. He just needs to show that he's looking for one. All he needs is a signature. Anyway... So he goes for an interview.

I think you can spot Driss.

While he's waiting for the interview, we see the other man being interviewed.

And at some point he's had enough.

And he simply bursts into the room.

I mean, one is a palatial living room, and the other is basically an office but you the picture. This next part in the film is slightly different in the show, because Driss is not even phased by the vision of the man in the wheelchair. He's much more interested in Magalie, the secretary, but we couldn't have that in our bl.

After this, the similarities continue. Because both Driss and Mork don't want the job, but both Philippe and Day are intrigued by this guy that just walked in and that doesn't seem to be interested in the actual job. Also because both Driss and Mork don't really act like what Philippe and Day are used to people acting around them.

[I beg of you. Even if you don't watch the film, just watch the interview bit. Because it's brilliant. Driss is brilliant] So Driss eventually leaves, to return another day for the signed paper. And Mork just leaves. And the next scenes are basically the same, we're shown the circumstances that will eventually lead them both to want the job. There are other parallels between Driss and Mork, and their circumstances and environment, the smoking and the drinking, the fighting... But for now this is it. I'll be re-watching the film this weekend so I might have some other thoughts but I wanted to get this out. I don't know if the show will continue to parallel the film, so I'm not going to say anymore about it. But I'm keeping this is mind for the next episode, because from the previews I have a feeling this is gonna continue. Also, I adore this film and everyone should watch it.

14 avril : l’anniversaire du Dr Ambedkar, l’un des fondateurs de l’Inde actuelle

C’est le 134e anniversaire de Babasaheb Ambedkar et son aura n’a cessé de grandir ces dernières années. Cet homme, né dans un milieu défavorisé et qui sera l’un des premiers intouchables à faire des études supérieures, à bénéficier d’une bouse pour étudier aux États-Unis et à Londres, et à se hisser au plus haut niveau de l’État indien dont il a participé à la fondation. Il fut député, ministre de la Justice, du Travail… On lui doit pour l’essentiel la constitution indienne, notamment les articles sur la laïcité, la lutte contre les discriminations. Très jeune, il a lutté contre le système des castes et, une fois au gouvernement, il a mis en place une discrimination positive.

Bhimrao Ramjo Ambedkar est né le 14 avril 1891 à Mhow (appelé aujourd'hui Ambedkar Nagar) dans le Madhya Pradesh. Son anniversaire a été fêté publiquement pour la première fois à Pune en 1928 par ses partisans. Mais il a fallu attendre 1990, à la veille de son centenaire, pour que le Dr Ambdekar reçoit à titre posthume le Bharat Ratna, la plus haute distinction civile indienne. En outre, la période 1990-91 avait été déclarée « Année de la justice sociale ». Certains État de l’Inde célèbrent le 14 avril une journée de l’équité. Babasaheb Ambedkar (son surnom) est particulièrement vénéré par les intouchables qu’il appelait les datits, et basses castes dont il était (car sa famille était de la la caste des Mahars) ; mais aussi des bouddhistes, car un an avant sa mort, en 1956, il s’était converti au Bouddhisme pour protester contre le maintien de l’esprit des castes (pourtant abolies par la constitution) et la sur-représentation des hautes castes au sommet de l’État. Il avait entraîné avec lui la conversion en masse de plusieurs centaines de milliers d’intouchables.

Ambedkar Jayanti n'est pas une fête nationale en Inde. Mais, c'est un jour férié dans 25 États et territoires de l'Union indienne (sur 36) , dont Andhra Pradesh , Bihar , Chandigarh , Chhattisgarh , Goa , Gujarat , Haryana , Himachal Pradesh , Jammu-et-Cachemire , Jharkhand , Karnataka , Kerala , Ladakh , Madhya Pradesh. , Maharashtra , Odisha , Pondichéry , Pendjab , Rajasthan , Sikkim , Tamil Nadu , Telangana , Uttarakhand , Uttar Pradesh , Bengale occidental…

Ce sont ces deux dernières décennies que le culte d’Ambdekar a pris de l’ampleur. Le jour de son anniversaire, les gens se rassemblent devant les statues et les mémoriaux du Dr Ambedkar pour lui rendre hommage. Les autorités indiennes ont fini par s’y plier et à déclarer, localement, la journée du 14 avril comme fériée. Les écoles et les universités organisent des séminaires, des conférences et des discussions pour informer les jeunes générations sur la vie, les philosophies et les contributions d'Ambedkar. Les processions et rassemblements publics sont très courants dans le cadre des célébrations. On organise chaque année un marathon, « Run for Ambdekar » , des spectacles de danse et de musique traditionnelles illustrant les thèmes de l'égalité et de la justice sociale ajoutent une dimension culturelle aux célébrations. On prononce des discours et organise des débats sur des questions liées à la justice sociale et à la discrimination de caste.

Il n’est pas vraiment dans la droite ligne de l’Inde de Narendra Modi mais son culte n’a cessé de grandir ces dernières années. On célèbre aussi l’anniversaire de sa mort, chaque 6 décembre, Mahaparinirvan Diwas.

『最強のふたり』　Intouchables

めちゃめちゃよかった…！！！予告と批評からお涙ちょうだい的な展開で終わるのかと思ってたけど、ちゃんと距離感を保った友人として続いていく終わり方で気持ち良かった。はじめのドリスを観ていた時は、デリカシーゼロの薄氷を踏むような発言や態度でひやひやした。フィリップからするとそれが心地よかったのかな。気を使われすぎると疲れるもんね…。私はドリスみたいに振り切った人にはなれないな。あそこまで人の顔色を窺わず自由に機嫌よくふる��えるのスゲ～。

価値観が全く違う、普通に生きていたら決して交わらないようなふたりがお互いを知りあって新しい挑戦や趣味嗜好が増えていくところが好き。タイトルの"Intouchables"とあるように、人生において触れ合うことがなかった二人が出会う。ドリスが会社面接で絵を気にするようになったり、フィリップがタバコを口にするようになったり、お互いの生活圏に少しずつお互いがいる。すごい良質なブロマンスじゃん…。なんで今まで観なかったんだ…。正直、ドリスが去った後新しい介護人に触られたり面倒を見られるのを嫌がるフィリップにめちゃめちゃ萌えてしまった。ひげはやしっぱなしにしてたってことは、シャワーとかの身の回りのケアすらさせなかったってことだよね。ドリスが来るまでそのいじけムーブしてたのか…かわいい…。二人の間にはきっぱり友達として境界があって、お互いに好きな女性がいて、依存しあってるわけでもないのに、たまにしっとりした雰囲気を感じるのちょっとドキドキしてしまった。夜中に発作おこしたフィリップを落ち着かせてるところとか！ドリスがフィリップにタバコ吸わせるシーンとか！！！コメディだから疾走感があって、気づいたら観終わってた。面白かった。

Intouchables and Last Twilight

Part II

So, as I suspected the similarities between these two works continued with the second episode. Because of the preview I was already expecting that to be the case when Mork started to work at the house. This episode only really mirrors the film in the first scene but since I did this last week, I thought I'd just do it once more. Also because I have a feeling that this will be the episode where the similarities end. Last Twilight being a BL, and the film being very much not, I think any similarities from here on will be very mild, if at all. By this point I think everyone is familiar with the film I'm talking about, if not go check part 1 here, or even better, go see the film.

The similarities in this episode are really only present in the first scene of the episode. I almost didn't make this post, but then I thought, might as well.

So the second episode of Last Twilight begins with Mork arriving for his first day of work.

So as soon as he enters the house, just like Driss he's given a tour and the specifics about what's expected of him.

Again, obviously there are differences, because Philippe lives in a palatial estate and Day lives in a house.

I also found it interesting that both Philippe and Day had a bad night just before Driss and Mork were coming in.

Another similarity was how both Philippe and Day had really high hopes for their carers. Although their motives are very different.

And this is basically where the parallels end.

For a couple of different reasons.

Philippe and Day's disabilities are very distinct. Which also means that Driss and Mork's jobs are very different.

Their willingness to have a caretaker at all is the complete opposite of each other. Also because of the above point.

And, of course, this is a BL.

So that's pretty much it for episode 2. If I missed anything, please let me know. Also since this is a post about parallels in Last Twilight, I just wanted to share another film that I think shares some similarities with LT.

Nhẹ nhàng và sâu lắng, tinh tế và lắng đọng!

Câu chuyện kể về hai con người, họ gặp nhau tại thời điểm đen tối nhất trong cuộc sống. Driss một anh chàng da màu, người pháp gốc phi, lớn lên trong một gia đình đông con và sống ở khu ổ chuột tại paris. Ở nơi đó người ta chia sẻ nhau mọi thứ từ miếng khoai tây rán đến điếu thuốc còn hút dở. Bao bọc cái nghèo ở đấy là tình người, sự chia sẻ và bạo lực. Bạo lực và ma túy luôn vây quanh họ, chực chờ để nuốt chửng tâm hồn họ. Driss vừa ra tù sau 6 tháng bị bắt vì tội cướp nữ trang, ở anh luôn có một chút gì đó vẻ bất cần hiện lên trên nét mặt và cách hành xử. Nhưng sâu thẳm a là một người anh, một người con có hiếu, biết quan tâm tới gia đình mình. Cảnh film bắt đầu khi Driss bước về từ nhà tù nơi giam giữ a, về nơi a sống, nơi a thuộc về, nơi gia đinh a ở. Màu của cảnh film có chút hòa xám và một bản nhạc được hiện lên gợi cho ta thấy một bầu không khí ảm đạm, một sự cô đơn ,lạnh lẽo...Philip là một tỉ phú giàu có da trắng người pháp, ông sinh ra trong một gia đình giàu có, có học thực và địa vị xã hội nên ngay từ nhỏ ông đã được dạy rằng "hãy đạp lên người khác mà sống". Phillip có một người vợ xinh đẹp và đó cũng là tất cả của đời ông cho đến khi vợ ông bị chuẩn đoán mắc bệnh nan y và qua đời. Sau đó không lâu ông bị tai nạn dẫn đến liệt gần như toàn bộ cơ thể, với sự tiến bộ của y học các bác sĩ khẳng định ông sẽ sống tới 70 tuổi với một chi phí vô cùng đắt đỏ. Đối với 1 tỉ phú thì đó không là vấn đề.. Nhưng kèm với đó ông luôn bị đối xử một cách thận trọng, người ta bảo vệ ông quá mức, ông không thể tự mình làm bất cứ điều gì mà đều phải nhờ tới người hỗ trợ. Ngay cả người bạn th��n của ông cũng đối xử với ông một cách thương hại như vậy .Điều đó làm tổn thương phillip bởi vốn ông từ một người có tất cả, một người có địa vị và quyền lực bỗng bị biến thành một gánh nặng. Cái tôi quá lớn đã làm ông vỡ vụn từ bên trong, ông sống như một cái xác như chỉ để tồn tại và chờ ngày để chết...mọi thứ cứ thế trôi qua cho đến một ngày ông gặp Driss. Họ đã chữa lành tâm hồn nhau bằng tình bạn, sự bất cần, âm nhạc và hội họa, định mệnh đã đưa họ đến với nhau một cách tình cờ!

5 avril : la Journée de l’égalité en Inde

Ce Jour de l'égalité (Samata Diwas, समता दिवस) correspond à l’anniversaire Jagjivan Ram, populairement connu sous le nom de Babuji, qui était un combattant de la liberté et un leader du mouvement dalit (ou « intouchables » ainsi qu’ils étaient appelés autrefois). Il est né le 5 avril 1908 dans une famille de harijans ou dalits.

Jagjivan Ram a été élu député sans interruption de 1936 à sa mort en 1986, sans doute un des records mondiaux en démocratie. Responsable du portefeuille du ministère du Travail, il a été le plus jeune ministre du gouvernement intérimaire dirigé par Jawaharlal Nehru en 1946, avant même l’indépendance de l’Inde. Il le sera à nouveau sous Indira Gandhi, puis ministre de l’agriculture et à ce titre, il dirigea la Révolution verte dans les années 1960 et à nouveau dans les années 1970. En tant que ministre de la Défense pendant la guerre indo-pakistanaise de 1971, a joué un rôle déterminant dans la naissance de la nation bangladaise…

Mais ce qui a été surtout retenu de sa langue carrière politique, c’est son combat de plusieurs décennies contre le système des castes et pour le droit des Dalits. Dès 1928, il rassemblait des dizaines de milliers de manifestants dans ce but. En 1935, il exprima son soutien au sein du Mahasabha hindou pour que les dalits puissent entrer dans les temples et boire l'eau des puits publics. Deux trois qui leur étaient jusque-là refusés. Jagjivan Ram rêvait d'une société hindoue démocratique et sans caste. Il s’est activement impliqué dans le groupe de pression pour l'amélioration des couches les plus faibles de la société. L’intouchabilité a été abolie par la Constitution de 1950, mais les quelque 200 millions d’Indiens qui sont issus de cette couche de la population demeurent encore dans leur très grande majorité  en bas de l’échelle sociale. De nombreux préjugés défavorables subsistent à leur égard. L’égalité espérée par Jagjivan Ram est bien loin d’avoir été atteinte. Cette journée du 5-Avril est là pour le rappeler.

L'anniversaire de Jagjivan Ram (Babu Jagjivan Ram Jayanti) est célébré chaque 5 avril par l’Union indienne, mais ce n’est un jour férié que dans les États indiens de Telangana et d'Andhra Pradesh. En 2008, pour son centenaire, des célébrations nationales appuyées avait été organisées. Narendra Modi lui rend hommage chaque année.
