It gives the Player the option to keep all of the artificial junk that Team Danganronpa stuffed into their head under the condition that they win! It’s an optional prize, but who wouldn’t want to keep their very own—very special—Super High School Level talent!?” A single checkbox makes Shuichi Saihara’s world spin. After six years(?), I have finally returned to rewrite my post-game, saiouma fic which you can read [here].

The story follows, Shuichi Saihara after the events of V3. He discovers that the killing game was all a virtual reality simulation and all of his friends are alive, except anyone who didn't survive til the end AND sign off on keeping their in-game memories before the game has been reverted to their pre-game state.

It's a story of self-discovery in the wake of an identity crisis sprinkled in with the frustrating romance of two teenage boys!

It's been an arduous five months of work, but I've come to deliver 60K+ words to you, dear reader! Even if you have already read this fic in the past, I would strongly encourage you to give it a once-over/another chance. I have VASTLY improved the pacing, plot, characterization, and grammar, and I'm quite proud with what I've been able to create! I used to be very insecure with my writing style but in the past six(?) years, I have improved in both my confidence and prose.

Adding onto your recent meta about the Pregames, one line stuck out to me. Where you said for the pregames that are supposed to be 'real people' they sure feel a lot more like caricatures. I'm really glad you brought up this point, especially considering the Pregames are supposed to represent the Danganronpa fandom, which is us. I feel like the understand the Pregames better, you need to world-build a little bit as to what their 'outside world' is like. It's heavily dubious what Tsumugi said about the outside world being peaceful and non-violet. With how people people were willing to sign away their lives so easily, the pregames feel more like su//c//dal teens that need a fuck ton of therapy. Many people in the 'real' DR fandom (at least from whom I met) have many personal issues that cripple their mental health and make them turn to fiction as a escape from their harsh life. I mean.........who hasn't thought "I wish I could live in that fictional world?" before?

The Pregames are really supposed to represent us, the Danganronpa fandom. So it actually makes me greatly concerned that people would 'self-project' the 'accepted fanon' of Pregame Shuichi being a sadistic yandere, Pregame Kaede being a nihilistic bully, Pregame Kokichi being a uwu femboy cinnamon bun, etc. It really does come to show that people would put shipping characters into a trope rather than using these pregames as their self-projection canvases

And while everyone in the Danganronpa fandom isn't the same, no version of the pregames have to be either. There's many pregame stories on Ao3, which has probably influenced and encouraged the misconceptualizing of the pregames. I understand that none of them have a canon personality, and since Ingame Saimatsu and Saiouma can never happen canonically, people will turn to the pregame AU to make it happen the way they want it. Then again, it is totally okay to write whatever an author wants, but it does take away good character discussion when the Pregames are boiled down to *insert name's* love intersted

Anyways, sorry for rambling. But yeah, here is my two cents about your essay. Great thoughts and I appreciated reading that very much as a pregame V3 enthusiast

But ya I do agree that the pregame characters are supposed to represent us. And deciding the characters' personalities based on tropes and shipping only is really funny when you can just Go Replay The Prologue and see the character is Nothing Like That Trope

Like, in the prologue Kokichi asks reasonable questions very clearly which is very different from uwu stuttering "pwease dont huwt me" fanon pregame Kokichi (Who probably would've been silent tbh). Kaede has a bit of a temper (and so does ingame Kaede) but is still nice to people around her (Shuichi is the obvious one) which. Y'know, if she was the popular bully girl like in fanon she probably would've insulted absolutely everyone without hesitation right? But she doesn't. Yandere Shuichi (Like, unironically) straight up squicks me? Because the way I see it, people decided he's like that because of his audition tape. Like, good job guys, you took a guy ranting about his kinda fucked up interest and decided he's a homicidal maniac who obsesses over Danganronpa and his uwu soft boyfwiend who needs pwotection at all costs. I'm flabbergasted that people don't realize what picture they're painting of themselves, since they're also Danganronpa fans, but aside from that... As someone who also rants abt their interests like that it just. I hate it DJKSANKJDSNFANFDJS

These characters are a lot more similar to their ingame selves than people give them credit for haha

I'm curious about your Lucky Student Kaito, don you have any headcanons about him?

oh boy DO I?? buddy you might regret opening this can of worms

(ultimate lucky student kaito)

ultimate lucky student kaito comes from an au of an au of an au, for lack of a better way to phrase it. but i’ll give you the general backstory without any ship-related specifics, because i feel like with a bit of tweaking, lucky kaito could fit into the plot in a gen setting. :-)

since this is v3, hope’s peak doesn’t exist. as such, kaito’s “ultimate luck” isn’t because he won the HPA lottery. rather, it’s implied that kaito was chosen by the ultimate initiative because of his exceptional luck.

of course, this is a lie, because danganronpa is a television show. the real reason kaito has been given the title of ultimate lucky student by the creators is because he’s “lucky” enough to keep his memories from before, even while in the killing game. this means that he knows that all the other students’ talents, personalities, and memories have been fabricated, and that they all auditioned/signed up to participate, just like he did. of course, he’s not allowed to tell anyone what he knows, as that could interfere pretty significantly with the killing game. if he tried to tell anyone, there would be some very serious consequences—which monokuma makes very clear to kaito when he first wakes up.

(this is also a vr au because i would be too sad otherwise, so kaito knows that none of them are really dying. doesn’t really lessen the impact much, though.)

also, something important to note is that this version of kaito has my interpretation of what kaito’s pregame personality is like, since he wasn’t given a new personality by danganronpa. there are some similarities between him and astronaut kaito, but also some pretty significant differences.

for example, lucky kaito doesn’t have a “hero” persona. he’s much quieter and more serious overall, and tends to keep to himself throughout the game for fear of getting close to anyone and accidentally revealing that he knows far, far more than he should.

the only person he really befriends is shuichi, but even that is quite a bit different from what happens in canon. this does change events somewhat, but the biggest canon divergences don’t happen until later in the game, and those are all pretty specific to the au he was created for, so i won’t talk about that right now.

he’s still hotheaded, still gets worked up easily, but he’s not as optimistic or energetic as astronaut kaito, so he doesn’t fall for things as easily. he especially doesn’t have any tolerance for kokichi’s shenanigans.

i also headcanon that kaito knew at least a couple of the others prior to the game, namely shuichi and kokichi. seeing the differences between their pregame and ingame selves really throws him for a loop. this is also why he’s quick to befriend shuichi despite his withdrawn nature, and why he’s less tolerant of kokichi’s antics. (not that canon kaito is tolerant of it, but he does tend to get caught up in it, while lucky kaito is more likely to just tell ouma to cut his bullshit.)

kaito’s “luck” tends to manifest itself in mostly negative ways—or at least, that’s how he sees it. after all, how is it lucky that he’s basically forced to isolate himself, to keep himself separate from the others, to lie to them and pretend he has as little clue as to what’s going on as they do? even before the game, kaito would never have considered himself lucky. if anything, he’s pretty unlucky. so being named the ultimate lucky student feels like a sick joke.

i have a lot more thoughts, but most of them are specific to the original plotline of the au i created him in, so i’ll leave you with this for now. thank you so much for asking! :-)

:O hi!!!! i thought i answered this but apparently not sfkjdk

i dont have much figured out for pg!kokichi (except id die 4 him), so in-game it is!!!!

general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life 

hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang

best quality: his confidence!!!! believable lies take a lot of confidence, and his mastermind 'reveal' wouldn't've been nearly as convincing if he lacked the confidence to pull it off. kokichi is confident in his own abillities and judgement, and i dont think he would've survived as long as he did without it.

worst quality: his mistrust of others. throughout the course of the game, kokichi remains distant from the other characters, even falling into an antagonistic role to drive the others away. we don't learn anything of his inner thoughts or feelings from his freetime events, even though he thinks of shuichi as (at least somewhat) trustworthy. we only see his true feelings a few times, namely in his conversation with kaito in chapter 5.

ship them with: i dont think he's secure enough for a relationship in the killing game, but he would be cute with shuichi!!! or rantaro, or both, or maybe kaede!!

brotp them with: hmm, kaito n him seem like they might be good friends!!!! and kaede. nd shuichi.

needs to stay away from: tsumugi. and maybe maki
