" DEAD LAXMIIS " The greatest Sri Lankan underground punk band that never happened. (Swipe to see all 👉) . . . Back in 2001, the central city of Colombo, Sri Lanka was suddenly disrupted by the presence of an all-female punk rock band. "Dead Laxmiis" arrived with the intention to make a statement, and they certainly did. Their music was loud, distorted, and high-energy — a beautiful contrast to the traditional climate of the city. Despite opposition from traditionalists, Dead Laxmiis quickly rose to become one of the most influential underground punk bands in the area. The band had two driving forces - "Yadvi" and "Pig Crusher Pink", or "PCP" for short. Known for their theatrical makeup and politically-charged lyrics, these two women were determined to speak out about issues such as social equality and women's rights. Together, they pushed Dead Laxmiis to become a powerful symbol of female empowerment in the face of adversity. The band had a short-lived career, disbanding in 2003. They only managed to record one EP called "Amma! I started the fire!". #deadlaxmiis #punk #srilanka #lka #colombo #jaffna #contemporary #contemporaryart #saskiafernandogallery #muvindubinoy https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm8XHpfINti/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I think that many Indian wedding photographers, especially those from Tamil Nadu, are overhyped. I have seen some people from Sri Lanka hire them for a high price, hoping to get more creative and better quality work than our local photographers. However, I don’t agree that professional photography is all about creativity.
I would not hire a so-called candid photographer who only uses wide-angle lenses, thinking that they are capturing the real emotions of the events. To be a professional photographer, you need to balance your own artistic vision and your client’s expectations. This means using your creativity in a moderate way.
To me, a skilled photographer is one who possesses a solid understanding of the core principles and discipline of their craft. They know how to harmonize their own vision and their client’s expectations. They use their creativity as a spice, not as a main dish. Photographers have the huge responsibility of preserving the memories of people’s most precious moments. Even a famous photographer who ignores the fundamentals of photography, while producing artistic photos, would not be my choice.
I am sharing these thoughts because of a recent incident involving a well-known photographer from Tamil Nadu, who came to Jaffna for an event last month. The final output of the images was far from satisfactory. Moreover, this photographer was accused of harassing someone on Facebook, and screenshots of the harassment were posted by the victim. So, instead of merely promoting the idea of supporting local talent on social media, let's take real actions to do so. - D

"AMMA! I STARTED THE FIRE" (The story behind the album cover) . . . "Amma! I started the fire" was the first and the only EP from the Sri Lankan all-female punk band Dead Laxmiis. The album art is based on a photograph taken by one of the band members Yadvi when she visited the Nallur festival in Jaffna, somewhere in the early 2000s. The legend says it's Yadvi's mother's older sister dancing in the photograph, who took care of Yadvi after the passing of Yadvi's mother. Yadvi was 4 years old when her mother passed away. The EP's title "Amma" is referred to Yadvi's aunt instead of her biological mother because the aunt was the mother figure when Yadvi was growing up. Yadvi's "Amma" whose name is unknown was the one who introduced traditional oriental music and culture to Yadvi, especially Villu Paatu, is an ancient form of musical story telling method performed in Southern India, where the narration is interspersed with music, an art of the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, as well as North-East Sri Lanka. You can hear this influence throughout this EP, which interpolates elements of crust punk and horror punk. The band's most notorious member, PCP (Pig Crusher Pink), created the Dead Laxmiis logo with the face of the goddess Laxmi with two crosses on her eyes signifying the cynism of the band towards the nativity of the common belief of capitalism. #deadlaxmiis #ammaistartedthefire #punk #srilanka #lka #colombo #jaffna #contemporary #contemporaryart #saskiafernandogallery #muvindubinoy https://www.instagram.com/p/CnL-d6kIFTb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The biggest Hindu temple in Sri Lanka's Northern Province is called Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil. Lord Murugan, who is represented by the holy "Vel" in the Sanctum, the main shrine, and by Shanmugar, Muthukumaraswami, Valli Kaanthar with consorts Valli and Deivayanai, and Thandayuthapani, without consorts, in minor shrines, is the presiding deity in the temple. It is appropriate to refer to it as the Hindu spiritual hub of Jaffna. 2.5 kilometers (km) northeast of Jaffna's city center is Nallur. The 'Jaffna Kingdom,' a late medieval and early modern Tamil principality, had its capital at what is now Nallur.
The Tamil terms "Nallathu" and "Ur," which mean "excellent" and "location" or "town," respectively, are the source of the modern name "Nallur." The name of the capital at the site of Nallur was original "Singhai Nagar," which is also spelled "Cinkainakar" in Tamil. Interestingly, this refers to "Lion City." The lion (singha), a representation typically associated with the Singhalese, was really the name of the Tamil royal city. Up until the Portuguese took control of Jaffna, every monarch of the Arychakravarti dynasty went by the name "Cinkai". Ukkira Singhan, the Jaffna Kingdom's founder, was also known by this name. In a sense, the term "Aryasingham," which means "noble lions," may be used to refer to the Jaffna Kings dynasty, also known as the Aryachakravarty.
The most well-liked deity among Tamils is Lord Murugan, who was once a shepherd and warrior god in Tamil Nadu's (southeastern India) hill area. More than violence, beauty defines his character. This Tamil deity was revered in South India before Brahmanic Hinduism. The Brahmins, however, understood Murugan to be the regional Tamil version of the pan-Indian warrior god Skanda, Lord Shiva's son, during a protracted peaceful period of adaptation of Brahmanic elements of northern Indian origin beginning in the early centuries A.D. This process is sometimes referred to as Sanskritization. He is also known as Subrahmaniya and Kartikkeya in India, among other titles.
