Happy Pioneer Day!!!

To anyone looking to honor their early mormon ancestors today, I'd like to ask :

Where are your seer stones?

Your family grimoires?

Tarot cards, palm readers, tea leaves?

Talismans? Divining rods?

Do you at least understand your star chart?

Sadly many of these practices have disappeared among Mormonism, and we've picked up the general Christian attitude of fearing, hating, or discrediting them. But I think today of any day is a good time to remember these magical practices that Joseph Smith and the first few generations of Mormons practiced, taught, and had faith in. It's odd to think that a modern day Christian witch might have more in common with them than a modern day mormon.

Daily Spells: July 24th

Peppermint Purification Spray

You’ll Need:

A large clear glass or pitcher filled with water

Several handfuls of peppermint leaves

A spray bottle

If you've ever seen mint growing in a garden, you know it's has absolutely no boundaries - it will merrily creep through fences and out of pots. Fortunately, mint is a very useful herb, especially in purification magic. The mint family includes a variety of different plants, from peppermint and spearmint to comfrey and catnip. Use peppermint or any of its relatives do a bit of household purification for the summer months, especially on hot days when you're trapped inside.

Place the glass jar out in the sunshine first thing in the morning, and add the peppermint leaves. Allow it to steep in the sun all day, then transfer the water to the spray bottle. On days when everyone's a bit cranky and sweaty and stuck indoors, spritz it around the house to purify the air and the spirit, saying “Fresh and clean, minty green. Rejuvenate from here to there, it's time for us to clear the air.”

Today is both Salt Lake City and Detroit’s Birthday! I recently learned that Detroit was founded on July 24, 1701. Salt Lake City was founded July 24, 1847.

In Utah we celebrate July 24th as Pioneer Day; the Day in 1847 that the Mormon Pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley. I want to acknowledge that enslaved people, “owned” by the Mormon Pioneers, actually entered the valley several days earlier to pave the way. Their names were Green Flake, Hark Wales and Oscar Smith. Despite growing up in Salt Lake City and educated by the Utah school system, this is a fact I did not know until this week (read more: https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2022/07/22/monumental-day-black-pioneers/). Non-Mormons celebrate Pie & Beer Day. To observe the holiday, and honor my two cities I got some Detroit made pie (crumble) and Michigan made beer (cider).
