No gushiwensday this week but I’ve translated some Li Shangyin to cheer on Laurence. Here’s another of his untitled poems.

The east wind shushes, ushers in a light rain; outside, over the lotus pond, soft thunder rolls. The golden toad gnaws the lock of the incense burner while its fragrance suffuses the room. The jade tiger descends into the well on its silk rope and returns with water. Jia Shi lifts the curtain to peer at young Han Shou, but Fu Fei leaves only a pillow to the King of Wei. Self-absorbed lovesickness drowns out the flowers of spring and an inch of yearning becomes an inch of ash.

无题·飒飒东风细雨来              

飒飒东风细雨来，芙蓉塘外有轻雷。 金蟾啮锁烧香入，玉虎牵丝汲井回。 贾氏窥帘韩掾少，宓妃留枕魏王才。 春心莫共花争发，一寸相思一寸灰！

Li Shangyin is being a woman again. I’ve noticed he likes to do this. Why? Who can say! This poem outright states its thesis in the last line, yet it’s also very opaque and Li’s intentions are largely left as an exercise for the reader. I’ll talk about my interpretation line by line, because I get very definite Vibes and I’ve tried to infuse them into my translation.

The east wind... thunder rolls --- the poem starts strong with an onomatopoeia for the soughing or whistling of wind (sà sà!). I’ve pulled it together with the last character of the line (来 arrive) for shushes/ushers. Broadly, this is a peaceful pleasant image, but it also keeps the point of view character stuck inside.

The golden toad gnaws the lock --- according to Gushiwen a toad was a popular decoration for the lock of an incense burner, yet Li has added 啮 gnaw or bite---or even erode, which kind of gives the impression that it’s uselessly trying to destroy the lock.

The jade tiger... water --- a decoration for a well rope that also incorporates the image of a tiger, something powerful and wild, leashed by civilized silk that shouldn’t be able to hold it back, to meekly make repetitive trips down and up the well.

Jia Shi... Han Shou --- Jia Shi of Western Jin fell in love with one of her father’s vassals, Han Shou. I didn’t completely understand Gushiwen’s notes on this but their romance involved a gift of fragrance and they were allowed to marry. I’ve added that she’s lifting the curtain to imply a lack of barriers between her and her sweetheart.

Fu Fei... King of Wei --- in contrast, Fu Fei (aka Empress Zhen) was married to her beloved’s (the King of Wei’s) younger brother, and only after death was she able to express her love, leaving him a jade belt and a pillow embroidered in gold. In the same way the Jia Shi allusion faintly echoes the incense burner, I wonder if Fu Fei holds a faint echo of the jade tiger. Anyway, I think these lines are meant to span the gamut of how well being in love can work out for noble ladies. Not clear if this is the same person or what, but Gushiwen says she drowned herself in the Luo River and became a patron god of it?

Self-absorbed... flowers of spring --- this was quite a difficult line to translate! The original reads literally something like “if lovesickness doesn't share, flowers strive to make themselves heard.” The description for the flowers, 争发, seems to be sort of like “striving/debating to issue/send a message.” The phrase “flowers of spring” just kinda sounds nice, and references the idiom 春心 “spring thoughts” for being in love.

an inch... of ash --- I wanted to preserve the striking original wording rather than trying to interpret it.

I could just stop there really, I love it so much...but I do have more I can say 😂

I'm a little confused about Zheng Ze Shou staying over at Fu Li Gong's place - I though they were living together since we've seen them having breakfast together a few times...but that was obviously just Li Gong staying at Ze Shou's place, no? Or have I missed something?

Anyway, these idiots (affectionate) in love are gone for each other - Li Gong is more aware of his feelings than Ze Shou is but it's there. And I'm hoping we get a confession by the looks of the trailer for next week...but then I'm not sure how the rest of the series will look if we do...but I trust that it will be good.

And now the second couple are getting interesting. I loved their conversation in the bar, it felt like a normal adult conversation, with Jian being so open and honest about himself, his divorce, and love for coffee. The jump to the next morning was a bit jarring but I understand that the show wants to make things ambiguous for the audience as well as for Jian...although I hope they don't leave it too long before they talk about what actually happened because that feels wrong, it's unfair to Jian to not know what might have transpired...

And all the cameos! I'm not sure I would have recognised the two from See You After Quarantine? if I hadn't already seen someone's post about it but Jin Yu Zhen and Shi Lei from Be Loved in House: I Do!?! Amazing. Now if we could have them reconcile and NOT actually get divorced that would be great, thank you.

For fun, what are your top ten (or less if there's not enough) "unhealthy/toxic" ships that you love (not Mork/Pi).

I mean, I hate MorkPi so that definitely wouldn't be on this list. Worst pairing ever. Literally. Ugh. WORST. Abusive asshole of a pairing.

But toxic pairing I like... I can do that!

1. LeoFiat: (mostly in TT2, tbh) they've gotten a lot healthier in DSN but still. Their start was a firedumpster and I loved every second.

2. Jiang Jin Teng/Shao Yi Chen: Omfg I love these two SO MUCH and their relationship is SO FUCKED I mean, both in the original and in the reincarnation/rebirth, seriously. Love them to death, though.

3. Zhan Jun Bai/Yu Tang Chun: No limits to how fucked up this relationship is/could be but SO GOOD as a severely fucked relationship built on literal murder, lies and being held hostage.

4. XingSi/YongJie: Yes, they're stepbrothers. Yes, YongJie is fucked up in the head. I don't care, they had fantastic chemistry and XingSi just took over once he decided to get into the relationship. So good.

5. Pei Shou Yi/Yu Zhen Xuan: I could argue either way for this couple regarding the unhealthy/toxic elements but I suppose an obsession and a man who considers himself incapable of human emotions/connection can't be too healthy.

And this is where I start to get lost in terms of unhealthy. I've never watched TharnType so they don't get on the list, I despite MorkPi enough that I will happily rip them to shreds given half a second and Kengkla doesn't even GET a pairing name because he's an absolutely bastard... and I just don't know. I know there are probably others that are unhealthy but these are my tops.

WBL meta 1 on the final episode of season 2.

I think I’ll split the meta on this finale into more readable bites again, stay tuned.

First: On hopeful endings when nothing ever ends. A quick love letter to a Show.

Show, I expect there’s no slap hiding in a preview these next days. Or in all the bonus content, till -hopefully- a season 3 with more stories and lessons, characters’ depths and over all experiences to explore. Even though an arc feels like it has been completed.

Because Show, you have made your point with that slap the last time. You made us happy, to make us sad, to lead us back to happy, but we felt the hard walk there. I do love you for the multi-dimensional experience you created and let us be part of. It was emotional work, happy work, sad work, unifying, dividing, boundary setting, and elating.

I applaud your kind message: Happiness is still possible after working through the impossible hardships, and after all, you wanted us happy, wanted a sense of catharsis for us. Right?

I am not saying in the end, although I do feel, that that arc is completed, a learning experience, for the characters and the viewers.

You did make us so inclined viewers put in the emotional work as well, alongside your characters, with your publishing patterns and air dates and editing, teasers and omitted parts as means of your storytelling, so thank you for that hopeful episode, we need that happy breather and you know it. Possibly because you need it, too. It’s human, right?

You even pulled that arc in tiny inside that episode again, with Pei Shou Yi and Yu Zhen Xuan’s story, when you showed that compilation of all their happy scenes from the music video, that, with that editing just there, could not be true. And I once more readied my tender, sinking, battleworn heart for the worst, for the bad ending for the quota, for a ‘yeah, well that’s life, not everything ends happy’-kinda-slap.

And for sure, it was not real, ‘just’ imagination, the easy happy was taken again. For a blip, hope suddenly felt like it cost something again, maybe too expensive to invest in.

I love that you chose to turn that around, though, Show, after that frightful moment of crashed hopes, just before I’d almost already arrived at acceptance in a crash course of the five stages of grief within minutes, because you want to tell THAT story:

The one that happiness is possible, see above. Your own take on it is possible. Not a U-turn, not complete fulfillment of happiness, but a start, an ever new hope, a tentative first step on a unique journey that will go on.

The human diffucult yet easy kind of happiness that sometimes is just a heap of work on the way to getting there, but lies already in so many steps along the way, fulfilling itself by walking the walk.

With Shou Yi and Zhen Xuan’s unusual story, set up to be further explored, hopefully, but the point is made nonetheless: You don’t let us stay in that dark place, you’ll allow us to move on, with a careful nudge upwards, not downwards, although it’ll mean work.

Like letting someone else in. Into the place you live, into your life. To see what follows.

I love what you chose to be, Show. You’ll stay welcome in my life.
