Influenced by What’s Gaby Cooking a main course salad cause I’m just not eating enough salad in the winter. The first picture is a combo of items marinating in homemade Italian dressing. This has chick peas, purple onion, cherry tomatoes, roasted red peppers and green olives. The dressing is lemon, red wine vinegar, chopped shallot, salt, pepper and olive oil.
After those items marinated I added the chopped little gem lettuce, chopped radicchio and avocado. I quickly heated up Trader Joe’s prepared lemon pepper chicken in a frying pan and added the hot chicken to the salad.
Very satisfying and yummy for a main course salad!

In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
Last week we savored the first of the heirloom purple artichokes, ‘Violetto Chioggia,’ from Northern Italy. We favor this later maturing artichoke over the traditional globe artichokes despite the wicked thorns (which I snip prior to cooking). We find these purple artichoke leaves tender and meaty with a delicate artichoke flavor.
If you’d like to give them a try, Territorial Seed Company offers seeds. They report it to be hardy to USDA Zone 6 and above. Visiting in the Pacific Northwest, I see artichokes grown as annuals for farmers’ markets.
Check out the poem, Ode to the Artichoke by Pablo Neruda featured with other ‘choke photos in an earlier blog post.
I find cross sections of vegetables enchanting; cf. an artichoke above and last week, a radish. With embarrassment, I admit this nearly 1.5 pound beet has rolled around my produce drawer for almost a year. Surprisingly, it was in near perfect condition and last week was the star of Russian Beet Borscht from the original Moosewood Cookbook.
Ignoble carrots harvested for the occasion did add flavor and texture. I grew them from palletized Bolero seed and had many misshapen, squatty and fat carrots despite stellar growing conditions. I’ll be back to regular seeding of Bolero in the fall.
I direct seeded Little Gem lettuce in late January then thinned and transplanted to two rows about two dozen plants. In cool spring weather and plenteous rain they’ve thrived. I harvested the first two for a meetup with my sisters. In my haste, I forgot to snap a photo.
I harvested a mountain of Catalina spinach from a ten inch row, leaving plenty for another vegetable side later this week. High quality spinach in April is not typical in my garden. I’ve continued succession sowings so we’ll see how long I can keep this gig going.
My contribution to the meetup dinner with my sisters was homemade apricot ice cream. Last June, with our abundant crop, I froze several containers of prepared mix so the final steps only required heavy cream and almond flavoring. Apricot season is less than two months away and finally, the weather has warmed so we all welcomed the lightly sweet and flavorful dessert.
The bearded iris are spectacular this year. Here the bouquet for the church entry.
Check the What I’m Planting Now page as I think spring in the garden. Then head to Harvest Monday, hosted by Dave at Happy Acres Blog and see what garden bloggers around the world harvested last week.

Cherry, how 'bout 2, 6, 11, 19, and 20 for Rapper Connie? He's a gem! 💎💎💎💎
hi Cas, my love!!! Thank you so much for the questions! Now I hadn’t written much for him but he def holds a special place in my heart! 🥹🫶🏾
2. Does your character often indulge in the things they like?
absolutely! Sometimes a little too much. He loves a little devil’s lettuce and liquor. A couple of his favorite vices..including women! (although he’s not exactly Armin-level of promiscuous). He definitely likes entertaining them. He also loves video games and when he and the guys are not making music, they’re in an Apex lobby acting like teenage boys.
6. What is your character’s fondest memory?
ooh, this is a good one! (lil spoiler here) so Connie was the very first artist that EJ ever collabed with and the project they worked on, a joint EP was Connie’s big break so to speak. A lot of his family was still in the Dominican Republic at this point and he was still trying to make it as a rapper. He remembers being with his boys in the studio and on FaceTime with his mom and brothers when it was announced that their lead single had gone #1 and was Grammy nominated in the same night. His mom was telling him how proud she was and crying. That to him was greater than any award ever!
11. Who are your character’s most important people?
hands down, his family and his boys! He adores his parents..for how hardworking they were, providing for him and his brothers. Even though they weren’t wealthy growing up by any means, they gave them the best life they could and taught them hard work. His brothers are his world and he’s an uncle so he adores his nieces and nephews too. Literally spoils them rotten with gifts. Of course, his friends mean everything to him. He often says that if it wasn’t for them pushing him to do music, he’d probably be in jail or dead because he got involved with the wrong crowd at one point. But they saved him.
19. Does your character have any friends? Best friends?
he and the rest of the Dead Boys Society are like brothers. EJ, Armin, Jean, Ony…they’re his second family. But he’s super close with Sasha! The second they met at Armin’s yacht party, that became his right hand. They’re always in tiktok videos together, being silly and stupid. (his fans SWEAR they’re dating, esp after she stars in one of his vids) but there’s no way. They’re literally twins. Him and Ony are always side by side, doing something insane. 😭 their interviews constantly go viral because they always have something slick to say.
20. Does your character have any significant others?
like I said, Mr. Connie loves the ladies but there’s one in particular that catches his eye whilst they’re on tour. And that’s the Pole Assassins’ hairstylist. She catches his eye and he’s been smitten ever since. They aren’t exactly an item or yet or anything but ya never know, that might change. 🤭

Saint Seiya AU where everything's the same but...
okay, so- I was browsing Wikipedia looking for material to make more historically accurate shitposts.
As I do...
Pisces Aphrodite's symbol, much like the goddess he's named after, is the rose. A red rose specifically.
However, did you know that another symbol of the goddess Aphrodite is lettuce?
fucking
✨L E T T U C E 🌈🥬
it's okay if you don't know where this is going
so-
Saint Seiya AU where everything's the same but instead of Aphrodite's powers being based around and channeled through roses, his powers are based around and channeled through LITERAL LEAVES AND HEADS OF LETTUCE
------------------------------
Fuck a rose, mans is walking around with a whole leaf of lettuce just hangin. out. his. MOUF
You can't tell if he's late to anime school or late to the salad bar.
HE'S NOT EVEN CHEWIN IT, IT'S JUST THERE-
Imagine him standing there looking all cool and beautiful yet intimidating (as he does), but instead of holding a rose, it's a whole head of Romaine.
Walkin around the sanctuary with iceberg lettuce leaves tucked behind his ear instead of something normal like an anemone or narcissus (flowers, other symbols of Aphrodite).
Just out here looking botanically confused.
------------------------------
Shun and Seiya get to the Pisces Temple and it's just a farm...
🥬🥬 A LETTUCE farm 🥬🥬
Pisces Farmodite AU???
And he has all different kinds planted.
There's butterhead, frisee, arugula, mesclun, little gem- You Name It
Seiya runs ahead as usual.
Instead of it being a long stretch of rose-covered stairs up to the Pope, the whole way up is covered in liek, idk... Endive???
For those of you who may not have looked into the food facts of lettuce (you not missin out on anything), lettuce is basically nutritionally-bankrupt, crunchy water.
Specifically, raw lettuce is like 95% water.
Instead of Seiya being slowly poisoned to death, he's having his Flintstone gummies siphoned out of his body until he dies of malnutrition.
Shun gets hit in the chest with BLOODY RADICCHIO
Instead of a white rose sapping out his blood, Shun gets hit in the chest with a white, translucent leaf of lettuce.
Once the leaf has completely sapped out his blood, it looks like this:
Tumblr media
------------------------------
Imagine Aphrodite being the Bubba Gump of his universe.
Instead of him obsessing over all the ways you can cook shrimp, it's over all the different kinds of lettuce and how best to prepare them.
------------------------------
Away from the whole lettuce thing...
There are many animals associated with the goddess Aphrodite. Among them are hares, bees, fish, and geese.
I can't decide which idea I like more:
Pisces Beephrodite/Bee Keeper Aphrodite AU - Aphrodite with his usual roses and flowers but he also keeps bees as pollinators and as his lil striped buzzy frens.
Pisces Bunphrodite AU - Where everything's the same but he just has a pet rabbit. It can also be combined with the Pisces Endive-phrodite (Lettuce Aphrodite) AU where the bunny/bunnies live on the lettuce farm and it's their favorite snack.
Pisces Aphrodite but with a Ranchu Goldfish AU - Where he has a ranchu goldfish that just kind of floats there... It's the center of his universe and if you even look at his fish wrong, YOU'RE DEAD.
Untitled Goose Game - In which Aphrodite has the most ornery pet goose on the face of the planet. It only likes him. And much like the Ranchu AU, this goose is the center of his whole world. Aphrodite doesn't care if his goose just stole your identity and ruined your credit score. Keep his goose's name...
OUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH
goose is probably named Rutherford or smth

Tokyo Mew Mew New Ep 18 Toughts
Again this episode left me without words, i don’t know how or where to start. Guess I’ll start by saying what i liked the most
Number one gotta be kid Ryou playing scientist in his dad lab. not that the original depection of him was bad but this time I feel like he’s really into science, his father steps, the mew project everything
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original japanese subs said UMA which stands for Unidentified Mysterious Animal
Tumblr media
ACTUAL SCIENCE AND UMA DNA LET’S GOOOOOO
Tumblr media
From Keiichiro biography card,
Tumblr media
this confirms his adoptation into the Shirogane family
The foreshadowing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ryo’s father acknolodging his a must better scientist and researcher than him
Knowing the burdens Ryou will have if he continues the follow his foosteps
Aoyama nightmares continue, everything is under this blueish grey atmosphere, Darkness and ugly thoughts are consuming his mind
The Chimeras
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They appeared cause Ryou was researching UMA? Or where the aliens already stablished on Earth? I hope we get answers to this
They have a gem, so it’s probably they were infused with an alien parasite by either the aliens or whatever Ryou was researching had escaped the lab
Family
Tumblr media
Even though the shirogane family interaction with Keiichiro was short, i loved it, somehow I felt like he was a cared for member of their family and because of that the outcome was more emotional.
Tumblr media
THANKS GOD, NEW DIDN’T MADE IT LOOK LIKE A SUICIDE LIKE IN THE MANGA OR A RANDOM FIRE STARTING LIKE IN THE ORIGINAL. She tried ... :( Mew Project The rest develops like in the manga and the original with Ryou having memorized everything but this time we get a glimpse into the research
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They went to every spot that had the RDA they needed for research, based. We also see this two characters growing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I never about this because how cat Ryou looks in the original, but IS HE SUPPOSED TO BE A BLUE RUSSIAN?
Tumblr media
Having Ichigo mention us, the mews, just  confirms what I’ve been saying, he cares for all the same way
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A bit of character development on Ichigo side, she’s feeling guilty for the way she treats him, despite him caring for their safety even if its his fault that they’re in this situation, what a loop.
Tumblr media
I love that they keep focusing on green enviromental solutions, more care for the enviroment, animals, plants, etc like we’d seen at the end of every TMM volume with WWF, this is the basic idea of TMM.
Tumblr media
Nice plot idea for the aliens
Tumblr media
It’s still a enemy of the day kinda of plot but with some truth behind its actions I LOVE IT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can confirm this, I live near a river (Rio Tejo) and since the waters are more clean now every year we get visits from a dolphin family (will share videos later)
Confrontations
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More Pie x Lettuce confrontation, YES YES YES, let’s develop this please, I want them to have a debate with each other
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lettuce stepping up, Ryou worried with her safety,, all it took was for her to stand firm in her belives, she was the best Mew for the job and she belives she can handle it then she’ll try no matter what, I know its hard to see but when Ryou’s looking at the red sea we can see a white thing moving, its Lettuce and Masha being swept away, that’s why Ryou says this line
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love how she relied on everyone trusting her to find the courage to keep going.
Tumblr media
Preverance wins
Tumblr media
The rainbow detail, thanks to the (mew) aqua and being sunny :’)
Tumblr media
MVP, and the day is saved
Tumblr media
Having the Nlue Knight not wanting Ichigo to fight anymore and only protecting her keeps following like the manga, I’ll share my thoughts when the reveal episode is released, to avoid spoilers for non-manga readers.
Tumblr media
I loved Ryou’s reaction, as far as they all know, he can’t be trusted, he might be a manipulative character. Altough..... this leave little space to Ichigo wondering his identidy, because RYOU AND KEIICHIRO ARE RIGHT THERE
Tumblr media
<3, Ichigo seeing her teammates are evolving, its so sweet
Tumblr media
Aoyama ruining the mood XD but after what he witnessned on TV is normal for him to think that way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I intreperted Ichigo line to what Aoyama said before, she’s not wondering about her relationship with him she said she’s happy being near him, she’s wondering about the planet’s conditions
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This reverts back to episode 1, what can she do to protect the planet
I wonder what kind of approach will TMMN take to make Ichigo mind at ease, will it end with the final Mew Aqua, will it continue and develop to A La Mode? If she decides to follow alongside Aoyama’s dream, I hope they give us  a glimpse into A La Mode story.

*Holds up some lettuce, yarn, a soul gem- and a wheel of cheese for good measure* Could you throw a moon or two at this man? He’s really getting on my nerves. I mean seriously, look at the smug grin- how can he surround himself with so many of those statues, yet I can’t cross an empty without knocking over every object ever.
Sure you may not be the best Daedra to ask, but that whole Baar Dau thing was er, inspiring! Plus, I doubt another moon or two’ll bother the inhabitants of Vvardenfell all that much!
This seems like a very drastic measure for one man.
In other words, I love it!
But it's not something for nothing, little mortal. It takes a lot of effort on my part to convince a moon to hurl itself down onto Tamriel.
I have a certain task that needs doing. Dangerous. Dark. Hilarious. In other words, it's a good time all around! Interested?

*cracks knuckles* I literally did crack my knuckles right before I started to type this. I can literally ramble about my garden and gardening in general, you have just opened up a giant post. The thing I am most excited about this year is strawberries, very excited they are a new addition this year and I pre-ordered some red and some white ones. They spread via runners so within a year or so I will have a nice huge patch of them. Strawberries are both the cheapest and easiest berry to grow, though not technically a berry. Another new addition is peanuts! I wanted something with a long storage capability as well as something high in protein, while also not being too difficult to grow, peanuts fit the bill. I am also going to try sweet potatoes in a larger quantity this year, last year I just had one to plant that had been donated by the food pantry and I just could not produce much with it and it was also crowded with normal potatoes. I am still growing potatoes this year, I saved some potatoes from my fall harvest and they are going to be good to plant towards the later half of March. I am excited to replant my purple viking variety but I also got my hands on the all mighty kennebec. Perfect ratio of starch to make a good soup potato or a good fryer, also high yields!! I also plant to grow carrots, cosmic purple and lunar white. Radishes are going to make a return but I am adding a yellow variety instead of just de 18 jours radish. Everyone who knows me knows I will be attempting corn again, we had such a good result last year and it gave us a lot of food, I would like to triple production to donate excess to the senior center. I am growing moonshine, glass gem, and of course the ever amazing and personally endorsed damaun ks super sweet corn. I had so much success with tomatoes that I am branching into new varieties. Yellow, purple, orange, everything but red really. Going to go with some micro dwarf varieties like orange hat and patio choice yellow, the regular sized plant cherries I will be growing include yellow pear and bosque blue bumblebee, regular size slicers will be sart roloise, and kentucky beefsteak. Last year I grew many many many extra tomatoes and donated them by the bucketful to the senior center, family, and neighbors. And I was only growing a couple varieties last year. Pumpkins will be planted again, moranga, Rouge Vif D' Etampes, and of course the flat white boer pumpkin. I grew a crap ton of the white boers last year and they were a wonderful food source and the extras I gifted to people for decorations. I would like to try burdock root if possible. I have plans to grow a bibb lettuce mix, little gem lettuce, and merlot. For cabbage I am just trying one variety, a faster growing one good for early in the year so I can start gardening sooner, red acre cabbage. I failed with beets last year but now armed with more experience I hope to tackle the mammoth red mangel beet, it can literally grow to sizes larger than a toddler. If I can grow these I will be able to feed many many people beyond just me and the elderly lady I care for. Seriously though, google them, they are H U G E. I also want to grow some much smaller albino beets. For squash, other than pumpkins, I am growing yellow crookneck, candy roaster, honeynut, lemon squash, and golden zucchini. Hopefully I can fend off SQUASH VINE BORER. I would have had a lot more success with squash last year had it not been for SQUASH VINE BORER. In my gardening, I have many powerful enemies. The squash bugs that resemble stink bugs, and have the same stink power, the swarming Japanese Beetle, cucumber beetles, tomato.... horn... worms... the ceaseless devourer, but only one is my arch-nemesis and that one is SQUASH. VINE. BORER. And, my absolute favorite veggie, the sturdy and vigorous veggie that never lets me down, the cucumber. Varieties this year include poona kheera, dragon's egg, and pick-a-bushel. With this wonderful variety I shall grow many pounds of cucumbers, especially the high yielding pick-a-bushel. I hope to donate many of these. Now, for flowers, we don't have too many, but we do have a few. They are essential in attracting and supporting local pollinator populations but also in feeding birds. I am growing a few different types of sunflowers, the birds and pollinators go nuts for them. Chocolate cherry, russian mammoth, short stuff, and double sunking. If you are a novice gardener I cannot recommend sunflowers enough they can take some serious neglect and bad weather, droughts, storms, heat. They are so great, the senior center took some cut blooms for decoration and I still had enough for the birds and enough to save many seeds. I am also growing marigolds again and nasturtiums, which are also edible. I also was gifted some celosia seeds to try. For green beans I am growing two bush varieties, cantare and jade II green beans, they have excellent rust resistance which was a big issue for me last year. For onions I am only really going to try one variety and that is borettana, it grows fast and somewhat small, good for a beginner. Sadly I cannot actually grow any root vegetables in my clay soil, so all the potatoes/tubers/peanuts/carrots/radishes/beets cannot actually be cultivated here. The clay soil is hard and compacted and I dont have compost and soil to soften it up. I wanted to grow them in tubs, and I have a friend helping me get some to grow in, but I still have to raise over 100 dollars to get enough soil and mulch to fill them all. I also still have to get the cabbage, onion, some of the corn, some of the sunflower, and some of the tomato seeds. I do have two tubs filled so I can at least plant several potatoes. I am going to grow as much as possible and exhaust myself in the garden because I have a lot of people that get food from me and I cannot let them down. Anyway I hope that answers your question, may have over answered, lol. I hope you have a nice day too.

Last week I made tacos with ground Turkey which can be bland so I spice up the meat. I had lots of left overs so for lunch I warmed up the meat, added some Korean type sauce to it and made these little lettuce wraps. They were delicious and I was so glad to use up the leftovers. I love this lettuce that I found recently. They are little gem lettuce wrapped in a package with 3 little heads of lettuce. They’re very tasty and crisp. The crisp is similar to romaine but they’re much tastier than romaine. They are the perfect size for sandwiches or wraps.

In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
In this year’s winter garden I trialed a new way to grow kale. We don’t use too much and I have few takers in the ‘hood. Instead of devoting a four foot row to it, I planted my starts of Black Magic kale in a 15 x 15 inch block. Small space gardeners devise ways to grow veggies intensively. One start went in each corner about 12 inches apart and the fifth in the middle. I harvest lower leaves as needed.
In the photo above lettuce grows on either side of the kale block in well-amended soiI. Blue flax drapes over the kale adding a whimsical touch. I favor Black Magic because it is very mild, similar to Lacinato and last year persisted into late spring with no aphids. Most of my brassicas succumb to the pest by early April.
I harvested a full kitchen tub of these and a few other lettuces but neglected to take a photo. It’s the season when lettuce tends to bolt so in advance of that I delivered lettuce to a half dozen neighbors.
I suggested my friend, Betsy bring a basket when she stopped by. She selected Pomegranate Crunch lettuce, celery, parsley and thyme. She is a cook whose skill and creativity I admire and learn from.
I harvested more Nagami kumquats from the heaviest laden branches. Sliced crosswise, these will simmer in a half-strength simple syrup to top waffles, pancakes or a simple cake.
Leucadendron Gold Strike, the plant a gift from my uncle’s protea ranch in Valley Center. This was today’s church bouquet. Similar bouquets last for weeks with water changes.
Check the What I’m Planting Now page to see what’s been planted in the space opened by the cauliflower harvest. Harvest Monday, hosted by Dave at Happy Acres Blog has returned. Join in and see what garden bloggers around the world harvested last week.
