All You Need to Know About Matchups!
CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE WAITLIST
Hi y'all!
This account is solely for matchups for several different fandoms. That means requests for imagines, oneshots, headcanons, etc. will NOT be taken.
Here are some basic things to know about requesting a matchup!
Unless otherwise specified for a certain fandom, a request yields one romantic pairing AND one friendship pairing as well as information on why I think you work well with the individuals I choose. Of course, if you only wish to receive either just the romantic matchup or just the friendship matchup, just let me know!
You can request matchups for several different fandoms at once! For each fandom you request, I will match you up with one romantic partner and one friend unless you request differently.
You can ask to exclude any character(s)!
Where can I request a matchup?
Requests can be made in the MATCHUP REQUESTS/ASK ME ANYTHING tab.
What do I need to include in my request?
Required
Fandom(s)
Your gender and/or pronouns
Your sexual orientation and/or preferences
Description of personality
Optional (but definitely helps me out!)
Description of appearance
Hobbies
Personality alignment (Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, Hogwarts House, etc.)
What you would look for in a partner and/or friend
Any other information you think would be helpful – the more you provide, the more I can work with!
Now with that out of the way, onto the fandoms!
Listed directly below is a shortlist of all the fandoms I take requests for as well as some extra information as needed.
Disclaimers

Sometimes Memory Alpha picks the worst photos to represent a character. For example, this one. Identified only as a sciences crew woman in “The Alternative Factor,”  this young lady looks like the last person in the world you would want to approach. That look would freeze winter in its tracks. But did you know this episode was not her only appearance?
Tumblr media
But actually, she has quite a pleasant smile and seems to be on good terms with Charlene Matthews and her assistant.  One thing we can determine by both photos is that she has quite a distinctive hair style. And that makes it easy to identify her throughout the several episodes she is in.
Tumblr media
Going by production order, this young crew woman first appeared as part of the audience in this scene of “The Conscience of the King.” Sadly, it is impossible to determine where she is because of the lighting. Even sadder, she is never given a name in any episode. So our only recourse is to either make up one or call her by her stage name, Carey Foster. And since the only made up name we could think of was Yeoman Side Flip.... well, yeah. Carey Foster is a much better choice.
Tumblr media
Foster appears for the second time in “The Squire of Gothos” (in the upper left corner) merely as one of those crew members who blend into the background on the bridge. Although she is certainly going somewhere in a hurry.
Tumblr media
Her appearance in “The Alternative Factor” was her third as a science crew woman. Not only does her hair style stand out but so do her long legs. Those legs might be part of the reason the crewman is grinning while he is watching her carry her coffee starting with the moment she pulls it out of the food synthesizer slot and all the way up to the moment she joins Lt. Masters and her assistant. Btw, watch this scene on your own and see if you can identify the crewman who seems so entranced with her. One odd factoid worth noting - according to Star Trek Fact Check (http://startrekfactcheck.blogspot.com/) , it appears that Carey Foster along another extra were upgraded from background extra to performer. Which we believe means they both were paid SAG wages. The blog backs this up with notes from the production sheet. That’s a nice little bump in salary, so evidently (as the blog surmises) both Carey Foster and another extra by the name Tom Steele were part of a deleted scene in which they both had a line. We don’t even see this male extra in the final version so we can’t tell if he is the same Tom Steele who was an extra in “Bread and Circuses.” At least Ms Foster’s part was kept in the scene after the deletions were made.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next time we see her is in “This Side of Paradise” when she is part of the crew who beamed down to Omicron Ceti III to join Spock, McCoy, Sulu and the others who have already decided to stay there rather than serve on the Enterprise. In the first photo, you can easily identify Carey from the back of her head. But if you aren’t sure, take a look at the second photo where she turns slightly to the side and you can tell it is the same crew woman.  Also, take a good look at the hair of the young lady in front of her. We can’t be positive, but the color and style of her hair looks very much like that of the red skirt in the front of the audience at the end of “The Conscience of the King.”  How frustrating that we recognize her in that episode but cannot identify where Carey Foster appears.
Tumblr media
Carey exchanges her science blues for technical services red in “The Devil in the Dark.” She is practically the first person the captain sees when he exits the turbolift and returns to the bridge at the end. And yes, that is definitely the same actress as the science crew woman we saw in “The Alternative Factor.” One look at that hair...
Tumblr media
In “Errand of Mercy” Carey Foster is still in her red uniform and appears to be handing Captain Kirk a tricorder instead of a clipboard just before the Klingon attack at the start of the episode.
Tumblr media
We could not make a positive ID but we are almost sure this is the final appearance of Carey Foster in “Operation Annihilate.” The hair is close to the right color and there certainly is an upturn in her hair where it hits her shoulders. Production notes verify she is in this episode, according to Memory Alpha. However, we can’t promise you this is her. Still, she has had an amazing run. Carey Foster appeared in a total of seven episodes, which is pretty good for an extra. Not many of the ones who played a unnamed crewman got called back for more than two or three episodes. Why was this actress so lucky?
Tumblr media
(Above - two early publicity photos of Carey Foster. Note the hairstyle in the second photo)
Possibly because she first appeared in several episodes of The Lieutenant, the first television series created and produced by Gene Roddenberry. After all, Joseph D’Agosta was The Lieutenant’s assistant casting director and became the casting director for Star Trek’s entire run. This could easily be a coincidence but then many actors who appeared on Star Trek also appeared in The Lieutenant including Gary Lockwood, Don Marshall, Leslie Parrish, and Nichelle Nichols.  Actually, Carey’s first Hollywood break was through her talent as a dancer. She had always wanted to dance since she was a young girl. She was so talented, she was allowed to enter an elite dance studio at the age of eleven, where she was given a full scholarship. On the day of her audition, she encountered her role model, Leslie Caron. Two of her dance studio classmates were Annette Funicello and Liza Minelli.  At age 16, she auditioned for a part in West Side Story. She and the other girls followed the directions of both Jerome Robbins and Director Robert Wise and she was one of the lucky ones chosen for a part. However, because her young age required a tutor on set and specific work hour requirements, she and some other young ladies were let go. But even though her dance career got off to a rough start, Miss Foster still found work dancing in industrial entertainment films (which were the subject of a fascinating documentary called Bathtubs Over Broadway).
Tumblr media
A choreographer friend got her a stint working at the recently opened Cal-Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe. Frank Sinatra was the owner and she recounts that he took the younger dancers under his protective wing, asking them to point out anyone who bothered them. From there, she landed a spot as one of the dancers seen on The Dean Martin Show.  With more exposure, Carey was able to successfully land work as a dancer in several Hollywood movies. Above is her appearance as one of the Winter-A-Go-Go dancers in the movie of the same name.  She is the second dancer from the right (in front of the young man in the green sweater).
Tumblr media
There was another better known actress in this movie by the name of Julie Parrish, who played DeeDee. She is the young lady dressed in purple in the promotional poster to the left. We know her as Miss Piper, the assistant of Commodore Mendez in “The Menagerie,” Part One.
Tumblr media
Carey Foster also appeared in similar roles in Annette Funicello’s Pajama Party and Elvis Presley’s Kissin’ Cousins. Carey is the one in the teal top above. At the bottom of the photo you can see a girl with a yellow bikini top. That is the female lead of the movie, Yvonne Craig. Carey remembers Elvis as being very personable and starved for conversation with the younger cast members. Annette Funicello, on the other hand, was stand-offish and didn’t spend much time socializing on the set. Ms Funicello’s name is probably not familiar to many people outside of us Baby Boomers who remember her as the darling of many a Walt Disney production.
Tumblr media
Not listed in her IMDb credits, but confirmed in an interview with Carey Foster (as Emmy Lou Crawford) in the Santa Barbara Sentinel, was an appearance in the 1969 blockbuster hit, Hello Dolly! She is the lady in the yellow dress seated to Barbara Streisand’s left. This would have been one of her last appearances in Hollywood, although she was an assistant choreographer on 1969′s television special for Jack Benny’s birthday celebration. By that time, Carey was married and had a family. Her husband, John Robert Crawford, had a one film Hollywood career. Howard Hawks hired him based purely on his race car prowess to appear in Red Line 7000. The only thing noteworthy about that movie was the appearance of up and coming co-star James Caan. Together they had one daughter, Sean Crawford. Hollywood was losing its appeal and Carey Foster was now becoming more interested in making sure her daughter had the best education possible.
Tumblr media
To achieve that, Carey Foster went back to using her real name of Emmy Lou Crawford and became a certified Montessori instructor. And of course, a dance teacher. Now she and her daughter Sean have opened their own studio, Inspire Dance. From that smile on her face, Emmy Lou seems to revel in encouraging young dancers just the way she was growing up.

The killing of Rhonda Hinson Part 36
Editor’s note: This is the continuation of a series about the Dec. 23, 1981, murder of Rhonda Hinson.
By LARRY J. GRIFFIN
Special Investigative Reporter
For The Record
Stanley [Nelson]…did it because he couldn’t bear the spiritual imbalance created in his hometown—and in America—by murder victims being abandoned by the justice system, and by their families being condemned to perpetual pain and grief. –Author Greg Iles commenting upon the Civil Rights cold case investigative reporting of Stanley Nelson, Editor of the Concordia Sentinel in Ferriday, Louisiana.
“I talked with Mark Turner today by phone. He informed me Greg McDowell accepted his invitation and will come on Friday, January 26, 1996, around 6:00 PM,” Detective James “Flash” Pruett noted in his synopsis of activities, dated Monday, Jan. 22, 1996.
Immediately, Flash called the SBI office in Hickory to speak with Roy Brown relative to executing the plan to record the home visit of Greg and Jane McDowell with Mark and Faith Turner.  “Roy had given me the date of January 27, 1996, as the date he could do the covert recording.  Roy said he would be out of town and unable to do the recording.  He said he would ask Don Riechard to assist me,” the detective recorded in his case file notes.
But before the plan could even “get off the ground,” it hit a snag.  Later in the day, Detective Pruett received a phone call from Roy Brown requesting that he come to the Hickory SBI Office for a conference.  Flash wrote of the meeting:
“I arrived around 1:00 PM.  He sat with me in the conference room and told me he had called the Attorney General’s office about my plans to record the suspect’s voice.  Roy said the AG was extremely upset and told him to immediately stop.  Roy quoted the AG as saying the information gained would be illegal and would not be admissible in a court of law.  Roy quoted the AG, saying it would be ‘fruits from the poisoned tree.’  The AG further instructed Roy to call me to his office and do a written memo to the effect the SBI is no longer part of this covert recording.”
[Note: In 1996, former N.C. Governor Mike Easley was the state’s Attorney General.  Ostensibly, Roy Brown did not speak directly with Easley; instead, he spoke with and was quoting the reaction of Assistant Attorney General John Waters.]
Detective Pruett left the SBI Office and immediately phoned District Attorney David Flaherty at his office in Newton.  He was informed that Flaherty was in his Lenoir office; but when he called that location, the DA was out for lunch.  At length, Flash succeeded in reaching Flaherty who invited him to Lenoir to discuss the plan. The detective arrived at 3 p.m. He summarized the consultation in his daily notes:
“I met with him in length and brought him up to date on the investigation.  My main objective was for him to call the AG’s office and ask about the recording issue. Flaherty said he did not see any problems….He said it was not ‘fruits of the poison tree.’  He could not see any illegal actions in my plans.  He called the assistant Attorney General, John Waters…John was busy and said he would call back.  Approximately thirty minutes later he called.”
Tumblr media
Curiously, Mr. Waters denied saying any of the plans were illegal or ‘fruits of the poison tree.’  He averred that Detective Pruett’s strategy was ‘clever and completely legal,’ albeit simultaneously devious.  Moreover, he indicated that if the suspect was convicted solely on the strength of information garnered from the recording, a Court of Appeals may overturn the conviction.
It was clear to the Burke County detective that Assistant Attorney General Waters’ main focus was to distance himself from any involvement in the execution of the surreptitious sound recording.  He maintained that the ‘Agent’ [Roy Brown of the SBI] should not have contacted him in the first place; his doing so made the assistant attorney general a part of the investigation.  Though officers have immunity from civil litigation stemming from an investigation, Waters affirmed, he himself did not—that fact prompted his official vehement reaction against the plan earlier that day.
David Flaherty concurred, saying that he could not become part of the investigation either; however, he pledged to continue to assist Flash in his efforts.  The DA recommended that those initiating and executing the plan should contact the county’s attorney relative to the civil liabilities of the case.
Clearly, when Detective Pruett left the DA’s Lenoir office, he was prepared to proceed in an effort to extract some admission that would either implicate Greg or his father, Charles.
Upon his return to the Burke County Sheriff’s Department, Flash informed Lt. Calloway that the SBI would no longer support the plan to record the McDowell’s evening visitation with the Turners.  The lieutenant suggested that they contact Buddy Noles of Western Piedmont Community College (WPCC) for assistance, while stipulating that the plan should move forward.
The following day, Tuesday, Jan. 23, 1996, Detective Pruett traveled to the Raleigh area to interview the William Clements family. After arriving in the Capital City, he consulted the phonebook to obtain a phone number for the Clements.  Upon securing both a number and an address, he drove to White Oak Road in Garner and located the small brick home of Ruby and William Clements.
The Clements knew the McDowell family; Charles was their pastor at New Bethel Baptist Church in Garner before he took the pastorate at Wilkies Grove Baptist Church.  Their son, William “Billy,” married Charlene McDowell but was divorced from her at the time of Flash’s interview, though the estranged couple shared two children.
Most importantly, however, was the fact that Greg McDowell lived with the Clements Family in Garner in 1981 during his first semester at North Carolina State University.
Flash knocked on the kitchen door, and Ruby Clements greeted and invited him inside.  Of the interview, the detective wrote:
“I tried to make friends with her before I asked about Greg.  She was very guarded and very supportive of Greg McDowell.  In fact, she said, ‘Are you the detective that harassed Greg all those years?’  I told her no, but she continued to resist the interview.  She said she didn’t know anything and couldn’t help me.  The husband was also interviewed in the master bedroom with Ruby. He is suffering from several strokes and has a memory problem.”
During the hour-long interview, the Clementses offered little information other than confirming that the young McDowell roomed with them during his first college semester and averring that they never saw him with a gun.  In fact, the session was so unremarkable that Flash decided not to file a formal interview detailing the scant information gleaned.
From the Clementses’ residence, the detective drove to Raleigh’s SBI Lab. He noted in summary:
“I met with Gene Bishop, Chief Firearms Examiner, in the break room of the firearms section.  Gene brought a file with him, but I did not see the contents.  He said the old file was in archives and I would need John Suttle to be with me before I could view them.  I wanted to resubmit the negatives for 8 X 10s of all the contact prints. Not all negatives were used for enlargements and I wanted larger pictures to look at different parts of the crime scene.”
Flash requested that he be allowed to view the bullet recovered from Rhonda’s body during the autopsy.  Mr. Bishop excused himself, walked back into a secure section, and returned carrying a small brown envelop.  The Chief Firearms Examiner emptied the contents into the detective’s palm—the projectile used in the killing of Rhonda Hinson.  Flash noted that it was, “a long bullet with a mushroomed point.  It is remarkably intact with numerous identifiable points….”
Though he was scheduled to be out of the office on Thursday, Jan. 25, 1996, Detective Pruett busied himself with preparations to record the McDowell/Turner social event the following evening.  He met with Buddy Noles of WPCC to request that he do the recording before meeting Mark Turner at his Valdese residence at 2:30 p.m. Mr. Noles identified the best location in the residence to install the equipment.  Wireless transmitters would be hidden in the curtains of “the room adjoining the living room….”  The actual recording equipment was to be ensconced in the crawl space.  All agreed that the installation would take place the following day before the evening assignation.
“I talked with Mark for some time in the living room of the home,” Flash noted in his case file records.  “He was unsure if he should assist in recording his best friend’s voice.  I told him it was completely voluntary.  He agreed to go ahead with the recording. He said he wanted, ‘to do the right thing.’”
On Friday, Jan. 26, 1996, at 2:30 p.m.—three and one half hours before Greg and Jane McDowell were to arrive at the Turner’s Bouchard Avenue address—Pruett and Buddy Noles met with Mark to install the surveillance equipment per their plan.  While Turner signed the consent-to-record form in the basement, Noles installed the equipment in the crawlspace.  The trio of men then climbed the stairs to the target room where wireless transmitters were placed on the window-side of the curtains.  Once the installation was completed, Buddy Noles left—Flash stayed behind and talked with Mark and Faith Turner “for some time.”  He wrote of their interactions:
“They were worried I thought Mark was the shooter because of his having possession of the sweatjacket.  I explained Mark didn’t have the other items apparently left in the victim’s car.  My statements seemed to ease their minds and they soon began talking more freely. They both felt Greg was the shooter, just from reflecting on their December 1981 memories.”

“It could mean trouble” Women of Star Trek #16: “The Alternative Factor” Lt. Charlene Masters
Ah, “The Alternative Factor.” Season 1 of Star Trek is filled with excellent episodes, and frankly, this isn’t one of them. It’s got an interesting premise - two parallel universes and two combating versions of the same man - but it’s told in a way that even after several re-watches it still doesn’t make much sense. However, this mediocre episode has one redeeming quality, and her name is Charlene Masters.
Tumblr media
I’ve discussed in previous entries how the original series struggles with diversity, at least by contemporary standards. But we must keep in mind the show’s creators had to make do with the restrictions put on them. (Remember, for instance, that NBC pressured them to get rid of Number One, from the pilot episode “the Cage” because they didn’t want to show a woman with so much authority.) So it’s nice to see gender/racial diversity in the show, even if it comes in the form of minor characters. Charlene Masters, for example, only appears in a handful of scenes and only in this episode, but her presence is notable. Besides Uhura, it is quite unusual to see a black, female officer with speaking lines in the series. (The only other one I can think of is Yoeman Zahra in “Operation: Annihalte!”)
We’re introduced to Lt. Charlene Masters briefly in the first act. She approaches Kirk on the bridge after the strange “winking” phenomenon, with a report on the dilithium crystals.
ASTERS: Whatever that phenomenon was, it drained almost all of our crystals completely. It could mean trouble.
KIRK: You have a talent for understatement, Lieutenant. Without full crystal power, our orbit will begin to decay in ten hours. Re-amplify immediately.
MASTERS: Aye aye, sir.
So we learn immediately that Charlene is in charge of the Dilithium crystals for the ship. I’m not sure why she’s wearing a blue science uniform instead of red for engineering. Uniform color aside, this is a really important job. I mean, later in the episode, Kirk literally calls the crystals “the very heart of the power of my ship.” That being said, Lt. Masters must have one of the hardest jobs on the whole ship. That’s pretty impressive.
A few seasons later we see Masters in the Rec Room, relaxing with another female officer. A redshirt engineer comes in and greets her:
ENGINEER: Hi.
MASTERS: Hi. Coffee?
ENGINEER: Is that an order, Lieutenant?
MASTERS: I know what you mean. Re-amplification finished on the dilithium crystals?
ENGINEER: Yes. Ready and waiting.
It’s a very short exchange, but here’s what we learn: this unnamed engineer is Master’s subordinate who assists her with the dilithium crystals. They have a professional relationship but they also appear to be friends. And neither of them seem to like the replicator coffee, apparently.
Unfortunately Lazarus overhears this conversation about the crystals and follows them to the room in engineering where the crystals are housed. There he knocks them both out using some kind of tranquilizer. Kirk is of course furious, not just because Lazarus took some crystals, but also attacked two members of his crew, who as I mentioned, have extremely specialized and important jobs. If they get incapacitated, what would happen? How many other crew-members have the training to replace them? My guess is very few.
Unfortunately Masters’ problems don’t end there. The other Lazarus decides he needs crystals too, so he tampers with some high voltage circuits in the corridor outside the crystal room, causing a fire. Masters and her engineer assistant notice the smoke and hurriedly attempt to find the source. Masters orders him out as she tries to fix it:
MASTERS: The energizer has shorted. Get out of here. Sound the alarm.
ENGINEER: Come on. You, too, Lieutenant.
MASTERS: No, I've got to stay -
ENGINEER: We've got to get out of here. The whole thing might blow!
Masters tries to do the brave thing by staying behind, but the engineer disobeys her order and brings her with him as the room fills with smoke and flames. In the corridor, coughing and struggling to stand, Masters alerts the bridge of the fire.
Sadly, we don’t see Masters for the rest of the episode. Although she doesn’t have much of a story arc as a supporting character, but it would’ve been nice to see her at least one more time. She’s a character with lots of potential: she’s smart, brave, strong-willed, and doesn’t like replicated coffee. What more could you ask for?As I said before, this episode is rather confusing and uninteresting. If it were re-written from her perspective, it might be slightly more entertaining. I’d call it “Charlene Masters and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.”
That’s all I have to say about this episode, folks. I hope you enjoyed it: share and comment if you so desire. Next time: “The City on the Edge of Forever”

Women of Star Trek blog entry #18: “Operation: Annihilate!” Yeoman Zahra
Tumblr media
Before Whoopi Goldberg, there was Maurishka Taliaferro.
Most Trekkies know the story: Whoopi was inspired by Lt. Uhura as a child, and became a great Star Trek fan. When she heard that a second Star Trek series was going to be filmed, Whoopi Goldberg approached Gene Roddenberry for a role on his show, and after some convincing, she became Guinan, the hostess of Ten-Forward. The rest is history.
But Whoopi is not the first black female celebrity to be featured in Star Trek (nor would she be the last!) Twenty years before, a young celebrity model named Maurishka Taliaferro took interest in a brand new sci-fi series called Star Trek, so much so that she wanted to appear on it!  And that is how we got Yeoman Zahra in Operation: Annihilate!
Sadly, we don’t learn very much about her character. She’s in several scenes throughout the episode, and she’s part of the landing party to Deneva, but she has very few lines, and she’s not even mentioned by name, only rank. (We learn her name from the credits.) But as I mentioned before in my entry on Charlene Masters in the Alternative Factor, the appearance of people of color, especially women of color, on the Original Series, is still significant given historical context. Clearly, Maurishka saw something in this series that Whoopi Goldberg saw as a child - a vision of a future where people were not judged by gender or race, but by their character - and both women wanted to be part of that vision.
So while there’s unfortunately not much to discuss about Yeoman Zahra, I wanted to tell the story behind the woman who played her, especially since it’s Black History Month! Maurishka has a Memory Alpha page and an IMDB page, which I used as sources for this post, but sadly there wasn’t all that much I could find about her. If anyone else knows more, please leave a comment! I would like to know more about her and how she got a role on the Original Series.
BONUS ROUND!! (airhorn noises)
No, we’re not quite done yet! There’s one more woman who features in this episode who requires an honorable mention:  Aurelan Kirk.
Tumblr media
Kirk’s sister-in-law appears briefly in the first act. She, like the rest of the planet, has become infected by the “horrible things” from another galaxy. Her husband is killed resisting them, and while on board the Enterprise, she just lives long enough to give Kirk some exposition. She dies screaming in his arms. I know it’s supposed to be a sad scene, but since we didn’t really get to know her - or the relationships between her, her husband Sam and Jim Kirk - it lacks the emotional punch we’re supposed to feel. Kind of disappointing, really.
Once again, thank you for reading!
Up next: Amok Time
