Kept putting this one off because, well, I don't really know why. And clearly that was a mistake, because this is a lot of fun.

Scientifically, I don't know very much about this 'congenital insensitivity to pain,' so I can't say much about the scientific background of this movie. However, in terms of cinematic effect, this story is a great deal of fun.

Sure, you wonder a bit about his grandfather (Mahesh Manjrekar, in an excellent performance) teaching him about anatomy and saying 'ouch' and karate, but not teaching him about how others perceive pain or the issues of things like murder and violence (as a kid, especially). Sure, there's fighting back against bullies - which is what essentially all of it was - but his fighting back after pushing her father off the roof makes it clear that that part of his education was clearly lacking. And clearly his father was not going to be the one to teach him, not with him still upset about the death of his wife (they never did find that chain chor) and uncertainty how to deal with his pain-impervious (insensitive, I think, more than indifferent) son.

Radhika Madan's entry scene - hell, all of her action sequences, are absolutely brilliant. I know this is about him not feeling pain - but that also leads to general overdramatization (furthered by him telling this story in a pseudo-unreliable narrator sort of format) like getting shot and repeatedly stabbed (though, again, impervious pain, so if it was going to happen to someone in the movie, it'd of course be him), but her fights scenes also just seem more intense because of it. Also, her constant use of the scarf is awesome. Her personal life is clearly a mess, largely because she'll stand up for others but not herself, but the minute her mother really stands up for her is amazing. (Her father, meanwhile, is an asshat of the worst kind, and Atul is no better.)

Gulshan Devaiah, who frequently shows up as a villain in movies, does the same here - eventually. But first, we get to see him as the one-legged 'Karate Man' who inspires our hero and eventually becomes a big part of his journey in this movie. He has some pretty kick-ass sequences too, using his one leg (sometimes with a crutch, sometimes without) to not just hop around, but also to straight up kick ass. His go as the 'cliche psycho villain' is also brilliant, especially at the end when he's refereeing their match. (The scene where he asks for a cigarette and gets slapped by his henchman is also hilarious.)

Quirky storytelling, and obviously a background plot that has never been seen in Bollywood before (the fighting, of course, has, as has the idea of fighting through numerous bad-guy henchmen to get something back from someone who stole it), but this 'pain insensitivity' bit is used with this story telling to make this story really stand out. And awesome acting, and action sequences, on top of it. Brilliant movie that is A LOT of fun.
