You're telling me the girls from H2O: Just Add Water were literally lost at sea and had to be found by their local nautical team (I assume something like the Australian version of the Coast Guard) and they never thought to lean into the potential trauma aspect to that?
Their community/friend group isn't even that large, surely everyone heard some kind of rumors about the incident. Mako is said to be shark infested and Zane almost died in one episode trying to break his dad's record.
When Emma quit the swim team and her family didn't know why or maybe when her family was about to go on their annual family trip to the water park (or something), why didn't she just sit them down and tell them something like "You remember when I was lost at sea? Some stuff happened and I can't really handle water anymore."
Her mom cares about her, her dad is said to be her hero, and her brother is a sweet kid. Emma could tell them something vague about how she "freaks out" when any liquid touches her or being around it makes her nervous.
She deserves to be able to vent to her mom! Even if it's not the full story, having support from your family goes a long way when your going through something.
Cleo can't do the dishes and her sister is suspicious about how she cleans her fish tank. As someone with an annoying younger sibling and used to be an annoying younger sibling, her sister still cares deeply about her. Her dad is very protective of her, it's mostly about boys, but I'm sure that extends to most aspects of her life too.
I'm sure they would be understanding if Cleo said something about water being overwhelming now after the incident on Zane's boat. This also could give her dad a more "valid" reason to be so protective about boys (not saying he had no reason, dads will be dads)
That one episode where they were all convinced Cleo was getting married to Zane, that would be crazy from their perspective. To be a protective father seeing your daughter go through something after some snobby rich kid pushed her out to sea, then finding out the same snobby rich kid is convincing her to sneak out and see him in private.
She could say the same thing at work, People see her as the odd one out wearing gloves or something. Then they find out she has a crippling fear of water, but loves the ocean enough to try to over come it.
I just checked the wiki about Rikki's dad, he sounds like a dick, but she could still say she has problems with water. I've always felt like Rikki would be unofficially adopted by the other parents (mostly Emma's parent, just cuz I've seen them interact more).
If they all just said they had trauma (which I wouldn't even consider a lie, cuz I would consider that traumatic) they could have avoided so many conflicts and be able to talk with their family about their struggles.
The episode where it was raining when they were about to leave for school and they pretended to be really sick. Just ask Emma's mom to call in and say their gunna be a little late because of the rain and wait it out. Bam! Excused absence from a caring mom!
(This is admittedly mostly about Emma and her family, cuz they seem very close)
If something happens and she needs to hide away to dry off, she can text her mom that she needs a moment. Like someone spills a drink on her at a some kind of function, like a neighborhood barbecue or a gathering at the JuiceNet Cafe, she goes to hide in the bathroom and lets her mom know.
Just being able to be slightly honest and get support about the changes in their life could lift the weight of the world off their shoulders.
I'm trying to re-watch the show and everything would have been so much easier for them if they could just be a little more honest.

The Calm Before the Storm Chapter 1: Securing the Future
Ami and Makoto are finally going to tell Ami's mother about their relationship, but how will she take it? Meanwhile, a new love blooms between the Guardian of Fire and the Guardian of Beauty.
--
“Alright, Mako, just breathe. You’ve got this!”
“I don’t know if I can do this.”
“We’re running out of time to figure this out.”
“I know!”
“Just take a deep breath.”
“Okay… okay… gaaaah!” The brunette cried out, throwing her hands up in frustration and scattering clothes across her floor.
“Mako, hun, picking out an outfit for dinner should not be this hard.” Minako said while looking down at her friend who was all but in the fetal position. When Makoto had asked her to come over to help her get ready for tonight Minako expected her to be nervous, but she had no idea it would be this bad.
“It’s not just dinner, Mina! It’s-”
“Dinner with Ami’s mom. Yes, I know, you’ve told me.”
“And… and we’re gonna-”
“Tell her that you two are dating. Again, I know, you’ve said it about twelve times in the hour I’ve been here.”
“And I still have to figure out what flowers to bring, what I’m gonna say when I meet her, Ami said I didn’t need to bring a dish but maybe I should anyway?”
“Mako, I’m sure it’ll be fine. I doubt Ami’s mother expects you to be perfect.” Minako said, trying to reassure her friend.
“Yeah, but she probably also doesn’t expect me to be dating her daughter.” Makoto shot back, “I’m already fighting an uphill battle here! Y’know because… because…”
“Because you’re not a boy?” Minako finished for her friend.
“Yeah.” Makoto said, slumping down onto the floor next to her pile of clothes.
“Oh Mako,” Minako began, sitting down next to the brunette, “Ami’s mother is a smart woman, I doubt she would be so close minded.”
“Yeah, I bet a lot of people think that when they come out to their parents… doesn’t mean it’s always true.” Makoto said back, “And even if she’s okay with it as a concept, that doesn’t necessarily mean she’d be okay with her daughter dating another girl. Or at the very least she’d probably prefer Ami to be with a boy.”
“Well, knowing Ami, she’s fresh out of luck there.” Minako said with a slight smirk, “Mako, you are a lovely girl. If Ami’s mom doesn’t see that, then that’s on her.” The blonde continued, resting her hand on her friend’s shoulder, “And I hate to tell you, but whether or not she’s able to see it probably isn’t gonna depend on what you wear or what kind of flowers you bring.”
“I know, I know! But if she’s like… I dunno, on the fence, then maybe I can win her over if I do everything right, y’know?”
“I mean, I get what you’re saying, but you understand that that’s impossible, right?” Minako replied, “The only way you could do everything right is if you could somehow see the future, which-”
“MINA THAT’S IT!” Makoto shouted excitedly while grabbing both of Minako’s shoulders, “You’re a genius!”
“I am?” Minako asked as she saw Makoto spring up and run out the door while throwing on one of the many jackets which had been strewn across the floor. “Hey, Mako, wait up!”
“So let me get this straight.” Rei said, rubbing her temple in frustration, “You want me to use, and I quote, my ‘weird psychic powers’ to tell you how to ‘not screw up’ your dinner with Ami and her mom?” The raven-haired girl questioned while looking at her blonde and brunette friends who had burst into her room just a moment prior, with the former still being out of breath from the run over to the temple.
“Uh… yes?” The tall brunette replied, timidly.
“NO! That’s not how that works!” Rei shouted indignantly.
“Aw, c’mon Rei, you’re telling me there’s nothing you can do to help?” Minako questioned, wiping some sweat off of her brow.
“It’s not a party trick. I can’t just-”
“Please Rei.” Makoto said, grabbing Rei’s hands and looking down at her with big puppy-dog eyes, “I really really really want this to go well. Isn’t there something, anything that you can do? Please, I’ll do anything.”
Rei looked into Makoto’s pleading eyes for a moment, before eventually lowering her head and letting out a large sigh.
“Very well.” The miko said, unable to resist her friend’s cry for help. She was then promptly smothered in a massive bear hug from the taller girl.
“THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!” The Guardian of Thunder squealed in gratitude.
“Mako… need… oxygen…”
“Oh, sorry.” Mako said, letting her friend go. After taking a moment to catch her breath, Rei led Makoto and Minako to the sacred flame. Rei sat directly in front of the fire, while the other two sat closely behind her.
“Alright, if I’m gonna do this, I need to be able to concentrate. Understood?” Rei asked, to which the other girls simply nodded in agreement. “Alright.” The shrine maiden said, closing her eyes.
"Rin”
“Pyou”
“Tou”
“Sha”
“Kai”
“Jin”
“Retsu”
“Zai”
“Zen!"
With that, the sacred fire erupted in front of them.
“Are you getting anything?” Makoto asked.
“Shh!” Rei shot back at her, “I’m getting some images, but they’re fuzzy. I see you at the doorway wearing… wearing your green blouse.”
“Green… blouse…” Rei heard from behind her, along with what sounded like a pencil writing on notebook paper.
“Where did you get-?” Minako began to ask, confused, before being shushed by Makoto. With this, Rei continued.
“I see you holding a bouquet of light purple flowers… yes, lilacs, I believe.”
“Lilacs…” Makoto muttered, accompanied by more scribbles from her pencil.
“Yes… it’s all very fuzzy, but I can tell Ami’s mother appreciates the flowers… dinner seems to go mostly smoothly…”
“What do you mean mostly?” Makoto asked, concerned.
“Make sure to keep your mouth closed while you chew.” Rei shot back, leaving Makoto embarrassed.
“Hmm… can’t make out too many finer details, but I see Ami walking you out the door at the end of the night… you both appear quite happy…”
“We do?!” Makoto exclaimed with what appeared to be a mix of relief, joy and disbelief. With that, Rei’s eyes shot open and she inhaled sharply, similar to a person who had been holding their breath underwater.
“Rei!” Minako exclaimed in concern, before the raven-haired girl turned around to face her friends.
“I’m good, don’t worry.” Rei said, reassuring her friends, “But more importantly, Mako” she began, looking at the brunette, “from what I could gather, you don’t have anything to worry about. Just relax and be the wonderful girl that Ami fell in love with. Well, and also that whole chewing thing, make sure to remember that.” Rei finished with a smirk.
“Okay, thank you so much Rei.” Makoto said before bolting to her feet, “Oh man, I still have so much to do before tonight. I’d better get going, I’ll see you guys later!”
And with that, the tall brunette bolted out the door to go finish getting ready for her dinner. After she had left, Minako looked at Rei in confusion.
“I don’t get it.” The blonde girl began, “I thought you said seeing the future wasn’t that simple, how were you able to pull it off?”
“Well it was pretty simple, actually.” Rei said, turning to her friend and giving her a sly smirk, “I didn’t.”
“Wait, what?”
“Reading the future isn’t something you can force, it’s something you have to let come to you.” The miko explained, “The most I can do on command is read energies, everything else? It comes and goes.”
“But what about all the-” The blonde began to question, scratching her head.
“What, you didn’t think you were the only one of us who could put on a performance, did you?” Rei said, rising to her feet and offering a hand to help her friend do the same, “I could tell the dinner will go fine… probably. But that’s not what Mako needed to hear. So I gave her some vague information, making her feel like she had more control of the situation than she did before talking to me, and BAM! Instant confidence boost.”
“Oh, like the psychics at the mall you always complain about?”
“Do not compare me to them.” The Guardian of Fire shot back darkly, earning a chuckle from Minako.
“Sorry, sorry. But seriously, it’s sweet of you to do that for her. You’re a good friend, Rei.” The blonde said to her friend.
The raven-haired girl looked down at the ground and sprouted a bittersweet smile at the compliment, “Yep… that’s me… good friend Rei.” She said weakly.
“Rei?” Minako asked, concerned.
“Sorry, sorry.” Rei said, shaking herself out of this state. “It’s just… is it wrong for me to be jealous?”
“Jealous of what?” Mina asked, although Rei could tell she fully knew what she was asking.
“Well it’s just… like… don’t get me wrong, I love that Ami and Mako are happy together. But…” She trailed off, awkwardly rubbing her arm.
“But?” The blonde inquired, prompting Rei to continue.
“Well, when Mamoru and Usagi got together, we stopped seeing her as much, but at least we all had each other, y’know?” The miko said, nervously fidgeting with her hands.
“Well us single pringles gotta stick together after all.” The Guardian of Beauty responded.
“Yeah. But now… Usagi’s off with Mamoru, Ami and Mako spend most of their free time together and… I dunno. I’m not mad or anything at them, I get it but I just… I wish I had that too, y’know?” Rei trailed off, looking down at her feet. “And you’ve got your own stuff going on and I guess I feel… lonely. Is that bad?” She finished, looking back up at Minako.
“Is that bad?”
Minako was stunned at what she was hearing. Not so much that Rei was jealous of Ami and Makoto, as Mina had felt a similar jealousy seeing their relationship blossom over the last couple of months. No, her surprise instead came from two factors. The first being that Rei was seemingly experiencing it to a much worse degree. Sure, Mina had felt lonely from time to time seeing her friends go off in their own directions, but she was normally able to distract herself through extracurricular activities or music. It seemed like this was not a skill Rei possessed, however.
The second factor that surprised Mina about what she was hearing… was that she was hearing it at all. While she had certainly gotten better over the time Minako had known her, Rei still had a tendency to put up barriers between herself and others which kept her from genuinely expressing her emotions. Mina supposed that was just a testament to how bad this had gotten.
“No, Rei, of course it isn’t.” The blonde finally responded gently, “And… I’m sorry that I haven’t tried to make more time for you.”
Rei looked slightly taken aback by this, and if Mina didn’t know any better, she would swear she saw a light blush cross the miko’s face.
“W-What do you mean?” Rei stuttered out, “You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Maybe, maybe not. But to tell you the truth I’ve kinda… felt the same way. But I know that you’ve been busy with the shrine and with school and I guess I just felt… intimidated?”
“I’m intimidating?” Rei inquired with a small smirk.
“Well you’re not not intimidating, that’s for sure!” Minako shot back. If she was being honest with herself, Rei’s busy schedule wasn’t the only thing that intimidated Mina about spending time alone with her, but that… wasn’t important right now.
“Heh, not sure whether I should take that as an insult or a compliment.” Rei said with a smile. A smile Mina loved more than she loved most things on Earth or the Moon. A smile she wanted more than anything to preserve. When mulling over those thoughts, the blonde was struck with a sudden impulse.
“Do it, Mina.” Her brain instructed her.
But she couldn’t possibly.
“You won’t get a better chance than this.”
She wouldn’t dare.
“You know you want to.”
Well, of course she wanted to, but-
“If you don’t, you’ll-”
“Okay, fine! Just shut up, dammit.” Minako thought, ending the tug of war within her mind.
“Welllll,” Mina began, her heart rate quickly beginning to accelerate, “I guess there’s only one thing for a couple of lonely girls like us to do on a Saturday night.” She said, placing her hands behind her back and leaning in closer to Rei.
“What would that be?” The Guardian of Fire asked, tilting her head in confusion.
Suddenly, Mina took both of Rei’s hands in her own and looked her directly in her wide amethyst eyes. “Go out with me?” Mina blurted out. She couldn’t tell if she was asking, ordering, or something in-between.
“W-what?” Rei stuttered out. This time Mina was sure she saw a blush come across the miko’s cheeks.
“C’mooooon, it’ll be fun!” The blonde prodded. “It’s not like you’ve got anything better to do! And when was the last time we hung out, just the two of us?”
“Mina, that’s very sweet, but I don’t need to be your pity date.” Rei responded, her cheeks still tinted red.
“Aw, don’t think of it like that. Think of it like you’re saving me from a night of boredom. So, if anything, it’s more like I’m your pity date.” Minako said, unsure if Rei’s grandpa had decided now was a good time to start playing one of their ceremonial drums, or if that was just her heart about to explode out of her chest.
Rei let out a sigh before looking into Minako’s pleading eyes with a small smile, “Okay! Okay! Just let me grab my coat. So, are we heading to Crown like usual?”
“No, I’ve got a better idea.”

hi ghost, how are you?? 💐
i know you said not to get our hopes up for a dive sequel, but as an alternative, would you consider writing headcanons here on tumblr? things like what minayeon/dahmo/sahyo do after their kids have grown up, minayeon discussing having a second kid, what each could does after a fight, etc. i love the idea of small discussions in the form of headcanons ngl
also minor brain rot, i’ve been thinking about the dive kids for a few days now and these are my thoughts/questions :) i love when writers expand more on their work involving other characters, so haha here it is:
1) i could totally see sakura hanging around haruto a lot because she views him as “the brother she never had” 🥺
2) i know this probably might (or not) show up in the ending chapters, but i would love to see how sullyoon tries to bond with sakura and haewon. example, does she find sakura intimidating? is she more comfortable around haewon? and also in their teenage years, would she ever feel slightly insecure that she didn’t grow up with them straight from birth?
3) what do you think the kids love languages are? and how would they like to be loved? by that i mean, since sayho are pretty big on grand gestures, would their kids grow up to expect that from their future partners?
4) eunchae going through a goth phase… i can already imagine her blasting Slipknot when dahmo are out the house and her sisters being done with her (for some reason i could also see her talking about this with jisung, probably because he learns to be very open minded from chae)
hi friend!! i am doing well, how are you??
that wouldn't be such a bad idea, i'll have to see but i may be open to it if i have the time! it'll definitely make me wanna write more about them too haha
your brainrot is always welcome here 💗💗
1 - she definitely does! she was secretly hoping her third sibling was a boy but haruto will most certainly serve as a brother she never had, that being said mako idolizes sakura so much, she sometimes gets jealous of how close sakura/eunchae are and tries to do everything her oldest sister does like soccer, basketball etc, and sakura sadly doesn't always realize how much mako looks up to her
2 - i can say now that sakura/haewon/yoona shenanigans are coming up 100%! without giving too much away i'll say she fits pretty seamlessly in with them (mirroring the j-line a lot) and they become a trio really quickly. at first she is intimidated by sakura, she's loud and popular but as they get older sakura relies on her a lot (much like mimo), she finds that talking to haewon about emotions and feelings is way easier (sakura has a thick skull to put it nicely), so much like misa, haewon/yoona are really close in that regard and yoona is very protective of haewon and her feelings. at times she would feel insecure having not known them from the beginning, but not too much because in many ways it does feel like she has known them forever :)
3 - haewon is very much the opposite of her parents' love language, she tries not to be materialistic which is hard when one mom works in fashion and the other is a model/influencer haha but i think her love language would be words of affirmation, she's a really high strung kid so she just needs someone to bring her back to earth, for sakura it would probably be physical touch or acts of service and she doesn't realize how much acts of service really effect her, and for yoona it would be quality time, she's shy and to love someone she wants to know every single thing about them
4 - eunchae is really going to drive her parents mad (mostly dahyun) in her lil goth/emo phase haha she begs her parents for a drumset for her birthday and they regret it instantly, she'll deff be getting cool music recs from jisung and chae she probably sees chaeyoung as the coolest person ever with tattoos etc.

Calling (+Character information)
I was a lonely child. Every adult knew it from the moment they see my eyes. They have blue eyes shielded away by special contacts. I had to do the same thing. The other kids knew I wasn't like them.
My brother is always at the guards guild to follow in Dad's footsteps. Protecting the village from the beasts outside. He has hazel eyes. Dad has stark blue eyes cloaked in green; mom has blue eyes and her's are cloaked in purple. Me, I wasn't left much of a choice. I decided my eyes would be better cloaked in an earthy brown. It's not fair!
I understand that I could unintentionally harm the other children cause of my strength. I understand my situation is completely different from their own overall, I don't think it's right when the remaining SOLDIERS of shinra come I have to be in my room so my parents can 'talk' to them.
They won't tell me why. My brother won't cause, "they told me not to. It's something they have to handle, not us."
Ugh. All I want is to know so I'm aware of what's going on and why I have to deal with hiding. They could just say 'Shira is dangerous. We don't want them to hurt you cause you're not proficient in combat yet.' it's all I'm wanting.
Alas I don't want to end up arguing with my parents so, I keep my annoyance within the wind.
Yet again I feel it.
The pull to the mako flooded mines near the village.
Tomorrow I'll be fourteen years old. I'll be able to go out freely without sneaking around. I can't wait any longer.
I'm going to go the mine tonight. I have to figure out what's been calling me for years and why it's been so strong as my birthday comes closer.
_________[Character information]_________
Full name: Luna Starlight
Nicknames: Lune, Lulu, Starling, Starla.
Birth date:
Month: ▓▓▓▓
Day: 7th
Year: ▓▓▓▓
Birthplace: Steelclaw village
Appearance
Eye color: sky blue
⤷Eye contact color: dirt brown
Hair color: copper brown
Tattoos: hummingbird wings (located on her back), a black panther clawing into skin (left upper arm), thirteen talley marks (upper chest).
Tattoo meanings
Thirteen talley marks:
⤷1.) The number is a reference to when she first encountered mako.
⤷2.) The marks being on her chest where anyone can see is more based on Steelclaw's tattoo tradition. Each mark represents the 'paths' a person takes in life. Her first one was given after she woken up and recovered from mako poisoning. This is a big deal as this later leads to her path of being a SOLDIER.
⤷3.) Personalized meaning of all is her beliefs in life. Blessings, consequences and lessons taught. Blessings are neutral yet bare consequences when taken hold lessons for those who are willing to learn.
Black panther clawing into her upper arm:
⤷The black panther is from her being one of the very few women in SOLDIER along with how her close comrades see her in combat. Sly, uses shadows for cover, and her reflexes in battle making her difficult to take down.
Hummingbird wings:
⤷ the biggest representation of her bond with her comrades. She's not the same as them in body or mind yet in spirit they're all the same. No matter what, she'll carry them if need be. Even in death she carries their memories.
Apparel, weapons, accessories.
Clothing:
Lunar wares a spaghetti zip up leather crock top adorned with two large pockets on each side. A belt made of an unknown scaled hide, chaps, and fingers less biker gloves.
Her footwear is a personal made piece consisting of metal plates held together with a thin mesh. These segmented plates allow movement as she walks, runs or is ible; the segmented sections are located on the bottom of the feet and toes. The upper part is one whole piece shaped to fit over and accommodate the ankles. These are called Skaldids.
Weapons.
Sword - Calvary
Calvary is a basic sword given to her on her fourteenth birthday. Calvary is a common starter sword in the guard guild to have.
Bows - hunting bow
A bow that's proved to be trustful over the years. It's not as strong as it used to but still packs a needed punch.
Ammo - arrows
Arrows are a flexible type of ammo as far as Lunar is concerned. She knows some basics in making arrows able to possess special types of effects through Flaking (a method to use materia in smaller weapons or to entirely infuse with a weapon. Like the name suggests, this is by breaking materia into flakes, shards, or a powder.). While she needs more to work with it's a start to something good.
Accessories
A gray feather
Lunar keeps this feathers in her hair. She says it's a gift from someone special. She's not outright answered anyone who asked who this someone is.
Personality
Lunar is a whirlwind. She can be calm and lay back on slow days, helpful to anyone who needs a hand, or something fierce when it comes to training, missions or someone who challenges her.
This comes with down sides.
Stubborn, tends to let anger get the best of her, gets taught up in small details, and attempts to prove herself when it's not needed.

How would you describe your relationship with your grandparents? (Mako!)
Family Questions!
Tumblr media
“Pretty good I’d think.” No hesitation, just a sun-bright smile from the caramel-haired girl. “I don’t talk to them anywhere near as much as I do my parents, and I feel a bit bad about that, honestly. They actually live in the country, though, so if I can get a day or two to grab a couple trains, I can pop by and visit them. I really should... Maybe next weekend...”
A pause, if only for a shake of her head to clear her thoughts; making travel plans in the back of her mind would just get her distracted! “Mmm... My grandmother is kind of stubborn, a bit like her son - My dad. She’s logical and thinks things through before doing anything, but she likes to have fun, too! The last time I visited, I remember a surprise slushie party; she’d gone out and bought a bunch of different flavored syrups and an ice shaving machine, and we spent the day experimenting and joking around. Grandpa’s on the quieter side and spends a lot of time reading and doing crosswords, but he loves hearing stories. Doesn’t matter if you’re just telling him about a trip to the mall, he wants to hear it. Probably why we get along so well... He’s always encouraging me to tell him what’s on my mind in full detail.”
She really needed to call them... Right, focus, focus~! “I’ve.. Talked to my Mom’s side a lot less, unfortunately. The one to ask about them would be my cousin, Rin - She’s more involved with them than I am.”

Imagine taking in Mako and Bolin off the street and Mako becoming protective over you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warning: Brief street harassment which some readers may find triggering
You were home alone one day when you heard a noise in your back garden. You peaked through the blinds and found two men crouching low in your flower beds obviously hiding from someone. You figured it was the police until you saw Shady Shin’s gang members poking their noses around. You watched curiously and saw the boys made no movement towards the house or to steal anything, they were just hiding but the gang members were rapidly getting closer. So, not really thinking, you opened the back door and hissed at them to get inside. The smaller of the two bounded inside but the taller one paused before sighing and following. You shut the door and turned off the lights. “Who are you and why...” the smaller one started but you shushed him as the gang reached your house. They peaked over the fence but not finding anything moved on. “They’re gone but I wouldn’t go out so soon” you explained turning to face the two men and you finally got a good look at them. The tallest one was very obviously fire nation, chiselled chin, paler skin, amber eyes. The smaller one looked younger and definitely earth nation by his stature and features. They looked very different but there was an air of similarity between them. “Why did you help us?” the older one asked and you just looked between them “are you brothers?”. “We are!” the smaller one cried “Nobody ever works that out! I’m Bolin and this is my older brother Mako”. You nodded looking between them “I helped you because I didn’t want the gang to get you, I don’t know who you are or what you’ve done but I’m pretty sure you don’t deserve what they’d do if they caught you”. Bolin nodded “they’re mad cus we left the gang, we were only in it until we paid off our debt but Shady Shin wanted us to stay so we ran off”. “Bolin!” Mako cried “shut up!”. “Why? She’s not going to go rat on us after she saved us”. The older brother eyed you suspiciously “but what does she have to gain by saving us?”. “Maybe she just wanted to help?” you replied and Mako frowned not believing you. “Look my family will be home soon, my mom and dad are both pretty smart, they’ll be able to get you out of the city and somewhere safe so just sit tight for a while okay?”. Mako looked like he wanted nothing more than to run away but he glanced at Bolin who was sniffing the air “are you cooking something?”. You smirked and led him to the kitchen “it’s only cabbage soup but there’s plenty if you want some?”. “Yes please!” Bolin cried and Mako sighed “Bolin....we can’t pay her”. “You don’t need to pay me” you told the fire bender “my parents would kill me if I charged someone in need”. “We don’t take charity” the older brother snapped and you sighed “well don’t think of it that way, think of it as being a friendly neighbour”. Bolin stared at Mako pleadingly and Mako sighed “fine Bolin you have some but I'm okay”. “Suit yourself the offers there” you shrugged and led Bolin to the food.
While Bolin was eating you noticed Mako standing weird and frowned “where is it?” you asked and Mako jumped. “What?” Bolin asked but you kept your eyes on Mako “where is it?”. Mako looked down “i don’t know what you’re talking about”. You rolled your eyes “my dad’s a nurse, I know how someone looks when they’re injured”. Bolin gasped “they did stab you! Mako why didn’t you tell me”. “They didn’t stab me...it’s just a scratch” Mako said as Bolin started to tear up. You took out a first aid kit and put it on the table “if you show it me, i can help before my dad comes”. “No” Mako said “i’m fine”. You rolled your eyes “i’m not going to hurt you, just let me help”. Mako sighed and lifted up his shirt. Bolin gasped “ow no Mako you’re going to die!” and Mako glared at you. “No he won’t Bolin” you said calmly “he will need stitches which I can’t do but I can clean and bandage it till my dad gets back, okay?” you asked Mako. Mako seemed very angry at the whole situation but sighed “fine” and allowed you to approach him. You had just finished cleaning the room when the door went and your parents and 3 younger siblings all walked in. Everyone paused and you turned to them. Mako threw his shirt down immediately and Bolin stood up so quickly he almost knocked the table over. Your parents took in the situation and nodded “what's happening and how can we help?”.
You explained the situation to your family and they agreed to help. Your father stitched Mako up and you helped as your mother talked through their options. Your parents didn’t even ask what the brothers had gotten into or why they were involved with the gang in the first place. They just asked questions to assess how the brothers could get to safety. Your mother asked if they had any other relative that could help but Mako shook his head “we don’t have any other family”. “Well, we do have some distant relatives in Ba Sing Sei” Bolin added. “But we’ve never even met them” Mako cried “why would they take us in?”. Your father went to speak when someone knocked loudly on the door. “Stay here” your mother said and your father nodded “y/n finish this off for me”. Your parents headed to the door and you worked on sealing and bandaging Mako’s wound.
As you were working you heard the door open and your father ask “can i help you?”. “We know you’ve got them so let us have them or else yeah?” a voice responded and Bolin froze “that’s Hulo and Chehe!”. Mako stepped forwards and you grabbed his arm “no don’t, you’ll make it worse”. I’m not letting your parents endanger themselves for us” Mako cried and gently removed your hand. After commanding your siblings to stay put, you and Bolin scrambled after him. You saw your parents arguing with two men but they paused when they saw Mako. “Ahhh decided to give yourself up eh Mako? You always were the smart one”. Mako stood up taller and didn’t let the pain of his wound show “don’t hurt any of them, we’ll come with you” he spoke confidently. “Not a chance” your mother said and she stepped right in front of the man blocking Mako from his view. You saw the man pause at your mother’s act and they frowned recognising her voice. Your mother was well known in the community, she owned a store not far from your house and was well-liked for being a kind woman always available to help others. You knew she’d helped some of the gang with their wounds before and sure enough so did the men. “You’re the woman from that store, you patched me up once after a fight....I didn’t realise this was your house Ika”. Your mother nodded “it is and anyone in it, is my responsibility”. “Yeah but see they’re shady Shin’s men....”. “They said they paid their debt” your father piped up “this isn’t Shady Shin’s territory, if he lets them go he won’t be bothered by them ever again, we’ll make sure of it”. The men looked at your father and then to your mother “you can promise that?”. Your mother stared back at them “you have my word”. The men stared before looking away “that sounds reasonable but if we see either of them near our territory....”. “We understand” your mother nodded and the men walked away. Your parents closed the door and Bolin cheered “you saved us!” rushing to hug them. You laughed as did your siblings who had not listened to you but Mako just stared. “Why did you do that?” he asked “you know they could just come back now you’ve stood up for us?”. “Then can try” your father smiled “but me and Ika are known for being able to handle ourselves, we’ve always left the gangs alone and they’ve left us alone too, I think we’ll be okay”. Your parents led you back to the kitchen but Mako wouldn’t budge. “But why risk it?” Mako asked “for someone you don’t even know! You put all your children at risk” Mako said gesturing at you and your siblings “just for 2 strange boys? Why?”. Your father frowned but your mother shrugged “because we hope that if something happened to us another person would do the same for our kids” she said simply “the world’s a cold place but it only gets colder if we turn our backs on those in need, I’m not sending you or your brother back out there because it’s the right thing to do, it’s that simple”. “Really?” Mako asked and your dad nodded putting his arm around your mother “yes”. Bolin grinned “i think i’m going to love it here” and Mako frowned “we’re only staying for one night”. Your father went to argue but your mom silenced him with a look “if you say so but you can have a room in the attic for as long as you need it, it’s not charity. We can help you find good jobs and you can pay a small fee for the room and food. But if you’d rather go out in the cold and make it on your own...that’s okay too”. Mako looked down and you smiled at your mother and how clever she was. Your family started dishing out food and you smirked as Bolin took a seat at the table for seconds. Mako let you finish bandaging his wound but didn’t sit down, he stood by the window. Your mom glanced at him and then at you “y/n why don’t you show Mako the room, the two of you could clear out some of the stuff in there?”. You nodded and looked at Mako “this way”. Mako followed you through your house and you smiled “our house is nice but it has a few quirks you should probably know about” you explained “don’t step on the 8th step, the living room door doesn’t close properly....ow and you’ll probably have to bend your head on all the stairs but it’s a good home. Small and crowded but nice” you said and Mako nodded in response. You could see why nobody figured Bolin and Mako were brothers, they couldn’t be more different. You could hear Bolin downstairs chatting loudly while Mako just followed you silently. You reached the attic and flicked on the light. “Wow, this is bigger than I expected” Mako said and you nodded “my mom used it as an office but now it’s mainly storage”. Together you and Mako managed to clear most of said storage and revealed the two beds in the back of the room. “You’ll need new bedding and it might smell a bit musty but we can air it” you said smiling and Mako paused “why are you all so nice?”. You paused “I don’t think we are....we just do what anyone would do”. Mako shook his head “no you don’t...trust me I’ve met a lot of people and they’d sooner chase me and my brother away from their lawn than give us a meal and a bed”. You shrugged “my parents both came from humble beginnings but they had kind people who helped them, maybe that’s why they’re like they are....either way I’d say stop questioning why life’s throwing this at you and maybe just say thank you?”. Mako looked down and nodded “I’ve been rude, I apologise. Thank you for...this, it all happened because you let us both in...so thanks”. You grinned at how awkward Mako was when you heard footsteps and Bolin and your parents appeared. “This is our room?” Bolin cried and you laughed how everything amazed him. “For as long as you want it” your father nodded and Bolin dove on a bed “and we get our own beds too! Mako this is amazing isn’t it!”. Mako nodded and turned to face your parents “thank you for everything”. Your parents blinked in surprise and you smiled just a little bit proud. “It’s no problem” your mother replied and Mako looked down “if it’s okay with you...the plan you said before, could we maybe try that?”. Bolin gasped in suprised and your parents smiled. “Of course” your mother smiled “for the next few days just lay low and rest up and then in the next few weeks we’ll find you a job you like and go from there, sound good?”. Mako nodded his head and looked from your parents to you finally “yes, thank you”. You smiled “no problem” and Mako smiled softly back trying to return the gesture. Your parents smiled glancing from you to Mako. “We’ll let you boys sleep now, let us know if you need anything, bathroom’s second door on the right and there’s food in the kitchen if you get hungry”. “We’ll be okay” Mako said seeing Bolin’s eyes light up at the thought of thirds “thanks again, see you in the morning”. “Good night” you smiled and Mako nodded “good night”. “Good niggggght” Bolin sang and you laughed before following your parents downstairs. “I think we’re going to like it here” Bolin said sleepily into his pillow and Mako nodded “yeah maybe”. “They’re all so nice! I can’t believe y/n just saved us like that and her parents, they’re all something special aren’t they?”. Mako nodded “they sure are”.
2 months later
The house was definitely more crowded with Bolin and Mako in it. The attic was just big enough for them but between you, your 3 siblings and your parents, the two men were noted. The house was always bustling with movement or noise and Mako and Bolin fit right in with that aspect. Bolin was loud and friendly so got on with everyone easily and even Mako began to open up and talk more. The brothers were both very polite and while they laid low from the gang they offered to help in the house as much as possible. Even when Mako got a job (your parents refused to make Bolin work given he was only fifteen) he still pitched in with the chores like you and your siblings did. The main things the brothers did was help your mother with the store and shopping. They were now the strongest people in the house so it made sense but you also got the idea they were protective over your parents after what they’d done for them. You saw the way Mako would give up his chair for your ageing father or how Bolin would pass your mother the first bowl of food and grew fonder of the brothers every day.
Bolin soon felt like another brother but Mako didn’t. There was something about him, his calm attitude or insanely handsome features, that made you excitedly nervous to be around him. You soon realised his cold exterior was an act he had to wear to protect him and Bolin but there was no need for it anymore and you noticed it rapidly slipping away. The more relaxed and genuine Mako became the more you liked him and the closer you became. Bolin would often rush right into whatever game your brothers were playing, being loud and boisterous like them, whereas Mako and you would usually end up on the outskirts avoiding the conflict. You soon came to love the evenings you spent sat in a corner of the living room together and knew you had a small/huge crush developing. You blushed easily around him and both seemed to awkwardly get caught in situations that made your feelings even more obvious.
For instance, one afternoon you were heading out to meet a friend when Mako and Bolin appeared with your mother and the food shopping for the week. You jumped spotting Mako so suddenly and he smiled making you feel weak “hi y/n, sorry didn’t mean to scare you”. “It’s fine....” you smiled back and went to retreat back up the hall so they could pass when Mako shook his head “it’s okay I think I can squeeze past!”. You stepped closer to the wall and Mako tried to bustle past you. He lifted the bags above your head trying to pass you when Bolin crashed into him trying to turn in a hallway too narrow for his broad shoulders sending Mako crashing into you. Mako tensed trying to stop himself from hurting you and managed to not put all his weight on you. He sighed and shot you a nervous smile as you were trapped against the wall by him “sorry”. “It’s not your fault” you smiled back “stay still I think I can slip out”. You tried getting out from under his arm but that was hard. Mako tried lifting the bag but it started to rip so you told him to stop. You ended up having to climb out under his arm and above his leg. Mako was blushing bright red when you managed it and you too felt flustered. You came into the living room to let Mako pass and then stood awkwardly by one another. "So you’re heading out?" Mako asked. You nodded "yes i’m meeting my friend Geho, i should be back late". Mako nodded resisting the urge to warn you about taking the main road not the back streets, a habit he’d gotten into with Bolin that had apparently passed onto you too. You almost sensed that and smiled "i’ll be careful" and Mako smiled "good" and tried not to watch as you walked away. Mako liked you too.
Later that evening your mother realised she’d forgotten to get the meat from the butchers and Mako and Bolin offered to go and fetch it. The shop would be closing soon so Mako and Bolin hurried to the store as quickly as they could. The streets were largely empty and as the brothers stood in the butcher waiting something caught their eye. "Is that y/n?" Bolin asked suddenly and Mako’s head shot around. Sure enough there you were walking, or more like running down the street in the direction of your house. "Who is that?" Bolin asked and they watched as some boy hurried after you calling after you. "That’s her friend Geho” Mako said recognising the boy but he frowned “something is not right". When you lifted your head slightly and Mako saw you were crying he shoved the list your mother had given him into Bolin’s hands and rushed after you. He jogged over to you at a fast pace but when he saw the boy touch your shoulder, trying to make you turn around and face him, he exploded in anger. "Hey" he yelled "get off her!". The boy looked back around just as Mako grabbed him by the shirt and threw him away from you against a wall. Mako held the boy off the floor being taller and growled fire on his fingertips. "Dude what the hell?" the guy cried trying to get free and you spun stound. "Mako it’s okay! Don’t hurt him". Mako frowned "but he was bothering you". "Well yes" you nodded and Mako glared until you touched his arm "Mako it’s alright, he'll leave me alone now, right Geho?". The man glared at Mako "don’t think your boyfriend here will give me much of a choice". "Geho it’s not like that..." you started but the boy swore and just walked away "fuck you y/n". Mako glared and went to follow him when he realised you were still crying. "Y/n" Mako said softly "are you okay? Do you need a tissue? A hug?". You took Mako’s last suggestion and buried your head against him. Mako wrapped his arms around you and rubbed your back saying soothing things. Mako held you tightly for a while before it started to rain and he frowned. "Come on let’s get you home" Mako said putting an arm around you and you nodded "thank you".
Mako got you home, upstairs and into your room without any of your family noticing. You sat on the edge of your bed not bothering to remove your coat, scarf or shoes and Mako frowned "y/n what happened". You wiped your eyes and looked at him "i just lost my best friend". Mako sat beside you "how?". You sniffed and Mako looked at you "y/n?". "Geho asked me out...he’s apparently liked me for a while and i had no idea! I told him i didn’t feel that way and he got angry and aggressively persistent. He was trying to convince me to give him a chance and getting madder that I didn’t want to when you got him away from me". Mako raised an eyebrow "he got mad at you for not liking him?". You nodded and Mako shook his head. Mako went to comment on how stupid that was when you sighed "i mean maybe it was my fault, maybe i was too friendly and gave him the wrong idea, I should’ve noticed he liked me...". Mako almost produced fire that idea made him so angry. "No" Mako said firmly "y/n you did nothing wrong! Being friendly is no invitation for a guy to try something with you and you’re not supposed to always know how he feels. He’s a grown man he could just tell you..." Mako trailed off realising that applied to him too and coughed "and to blame you for not liking him...y/n he’s an asshole and you deserve way better friends than him". "But he’s my oldest friend" you sniffed and Mako shrugged "well if he’s a true friend he'll come back and apologise, i think he should beg for forgiveness personally". Mako relaxed to see you smile slightly. "And if he doesn’t then who needs him? You don’t need guys like that around you y/n, nobody should ever treat you that way". You smiled looking up at Mako "how are you so sure?". "Because it’s common courtesy, because it takes nothing to be polite. After all, friends should never blame you for your feelings or things you can’t control, because you’re the kindest sweetest person i know and if anyone does ever treat you that way i will put a stop to it". You smiled softly "like today? You were like a knight in shining armour, you just appeared out of nowhere". Mako smiled "i’m just glad i was nearby, when i saw him reach out for you...". You tensed and Mako frowned "but you’re okay, you’re safe" he rushed to reassure you. You nodded "thanks to you". "You know i can teach you some stuff" Mako told you "so you know what to do if a guy tries to grab you like that again". "You can?" you asked and Mako nodded "there’s actually a lot of ways to get out of holds and to reverse them on the person, I can show you a bunch of ways to protect yourself". "You’d help me with that?" you asked and Mako nodded "of course!". You smiled "thanks Mako that’s amazing! I’m so glad i met you". Mako’s heart lifted and he smiled "i’m glad i met you too". He wanted to tuck that piece of hair behind your ear but didn’t want to touch you and scare you after what had just happened. "I think i’m going to shower and then go to sleep" you announced and Mako nodded standing up. "Thanks for today" you smiled at him and Mako nodded "no problem and if you need me, for anything, even if it’s just to have someone with you until you fall asleep...just call me". You smiled "thanks Mako" and he focused on your watery eyes and red nose and just wanted to comfort you. "Can i hug you?" he asked and you blushed but were so pleased he asked for permission. "Yes" you smiled and he wrapped you in a hug. You hugged him tightly feeling safe there and when you seperated Mako was worried to see you were crying again. "Y/n are you alright...". "Yes you just make me feel safe" you smiled through tears "that’s all". Mako blushed and felt so proud he made you feel that way. “That makes me glad to hear, I’d do anything to keep you safe and well....all your family” he trailed off and you smiled. “Well you do so thank you...for being you I guess?” you said awkwardly and Mako laughed. “No problem...I meant what I said, just bang on the ceiling if you need me” Mako said as his room was above yours. “Thanks Mako” you smiled and Mako nodded leaving your room.
Mako closed your door softly and walked to his own room. Bolin burst in soon after and gasped “where’s y/n? Is she okay?”. “She’s alright, her friend was harassing her but I got him to leave her alone, hopefully he’ll never go near her again but if he does....”. Bolin laughed “I can imagine what you’d do to him for messing with y/n given your feelings for her”. Mako blushed looking away “is it that obvious?”. “Ow yeah to everyone apart from her” Bolin nodded “but maybe not after today”. “I’d have helped her regardless” Mako explained and Bolin nodded “yeah I know...but I don’t think you’d be so emotional and protective, all i’m saying is she might’ve noticed that”. “Maybe” Mako nodded “but after what she’s been through the last thing I want to do is to put any pressure on her”. Bolin nodded “i get that, so just let her come to you, or wait for enough time to pass and then ask her out”. Mako nodded “I think the first option” and Bolin smirked “chicken!”. Mako shook his head “you didn’t see how upset she was, I’d do anything not to see her cry again...I’ll let her come to me if or when she wants to, I’m not going to stop showing I care about her but I’m also not going to force her to decide anything, I’ll be here if she wants me” Mako said adamantly. Bolin smiled “aww my big brother all in love, so cute”. Mako blushed and pushed Bolin away from him. “You’re an idiot” he huffed and got into bed turning the light out. Mako listened as Bolin pottered around the room and he sighed. “You’re not an idiot Bolin you’re just...accurately annoying” Mako clarified. “I know” Bolin smirked and Mako rolled his eyes. Bolin was exactly right, Mako had fallen for you hard and he’d do anything to protect you. He meant what he said though and wouldn’t pressure you in any way, he’d wait for you....as long as it took.
____
I only recently realised Mako was only 8 when his parents died and he became Bolin’s guardian which made me really sad...so I wanted to write something where someone looked after Mako for once.

KAGEYAMA TOBIO Unlike most parents, Kageyama's job as a professional volleyball player didn't allow him the luxury of doing what most moms and dads do with their kids. It's not as if he's neglected his parental responsibilities, he's the type to spoil his four-year-old Kaito with gifts and toys, he was just unfortunate to not have enough time to spend with him.
But on a particular day off, the stars seemed to have aligned when you asked him to pick up Kaito from daycare. Kageyama looked forward to this opportunity and he had planned an afternoon for a long overdue father-and-son bonding. However, due to his celebrity athlete status, Kageyama was mindful of being swarmed by fans so he took it to mind to wear his best disguise (see: black cap, black shades, white shirt and jeans, finished with a denim jacket).
As soon as he's parked across the daycare center, Kageyama immediately earned the attention of the moms who were also waiting for their children. It didn't help that when he stepped out of the car, they all swooned over him and recognized that he was the star setter from Schweiden Adlers. And when the bell rang and footsteps came running from the building, all the kids also stood in awe as they noticed the familiar tall person who they looked up to and only watched in the TVs. But to Kageyama, the one attention that only mattered was that of his son's.
"Kaito, over here!" He waved over the little boy, and seeing his father's presence in the crowd, Kaito sped off to where Kageyama was. He welcomed the young boy with open arms, peppering his cute face with kisses and lifting him up from the ground. The audience that have gathered were starstruck to see the usual stoic player break his facade and become a doting father to his adorable mini-me.
"You made it, Papa! I thought Mama was joking when she said you will fetch me after school," the child said through his fits of giggles.
Kageyama pressed his forehead to his son's and whispered, "I never break my promises." He put Kaito down and held his hand as they began walking to their car, saying goodbye to his classmates. "Now, let's go get some ice cream!"
USHIJIMA WAKATOSHI   It was the first summer festival that you wouldn't be attending  with your family, and your five-year-old daughter, Isuzu, was extremely heartbroken. What she didn't know was that you've made Ushijima promise that he would still bring her to the festival and catch the fireworks show.
So there they were standing at the entrance to the festival, your husband and daughter are clad in matching yukatas that you prepared. Ushijima was wearing a midnight blue yukata that was adorned with white stripes and strapped to his waist with a white sash. Meanwhile, your little girl was donning a pink yukata with blooming flower patterns. For her finishing touch, Ushijima tied her hair up in a bun and used a beautiful kanzashi that he gifted to you to tie it up. Before they left home, he sent you a photo and bragged about his hair tying skills.
The father-and-daughter duo leisurely strolled around the venue, checking out booths and trying different food stalls. The people around them gushed over how Ushijima was wrapped around his daughter's fingers, complying to her requests and winning her stuffed toys from games. And when the announcement about the fireworks show blared through the speakers, they joined the crowd to the viewing area.
Ushijma noticed how Isuzu was jittery from the spectators that have gathered in the viewing deck. He bent down and wiped the tears that were forming on her eyes, "Princess, don't cry. I'm here." Isuzu only clung tighter to her father, and it was then that he decided to offer his back to her.
"Come, wrap your arms around me and hop on. I'll lift you closer to the skies." The young girl stopped her crying and smiled a little, moving to his back and encircling her arms around her father's strong shoulders. Ushijima helped her adjust and secured her on his shoulders, making Isuzu gasp as she was now safe and towering over the crowd.
Her eyes flitted above as she heard the sounds of fireworks and enjoyed the colorful sparks that were painting the evening skies. Ushijima reveled in how his daughter was looking at the clouds in awe, clapping and laughing along with each bright explosion. But what he would treasure the most was how his precious Isuzu was glowing under the fireworks light.
HOSHIUMI KORAI The Hoshiumi household was a lively and loud one. Chaos often ensued with the twins, Mako and Kohei, and the youngest girl Nanami, as they were currently at that age where they always seemed to be full of energy and liked to run around the house. And Korai was the type of dad who would join in on the fun and play with his beloved children.
Moments of peace and quiet would be found at night when the kids are tucked in bed and getting ready to drift off to dreamland. However, they wouldn't be able to have a proper good night sleep without their father reading them a bedtime story.
It was another night when you returned home late and opened the door to dark, silent house. A sliver of light can be seen coming from the kids' door upstairs and you assume that it was bedtime for them. You tiptoed carefully and was nearing their room when you heard the gentle voice of Hoshiumi reading a passage from The Little Red Riding Hood. You leaned on the door and watched your boys and little girl enjoying a classic tale.
When Hoshiumi finished reading, he turned to the kids and saw the twins passed out and snoring. But his princess seemed to be wide awake, and terrified at the thought of the wolf eating Little Red Riding Hood. "Papa, will a wolf come and eat you and Mama?" She asked with her trembling voice.
You and Hoshiumi chuckled at her question, but your husband put the book down and scooted closer to Nanami. He hugged her, patting her head so slowly as he assured, "If you become a good girl and listen to Mama and Papa's warnings, then no wolf will come to eat us." He kissed the top of her head, "Now, go sleep. I'll be here, I'll never leave your side."
The little girl seemed to relax in his hold and Hoshiumi turned towards you at the door. He sent you a sweet smile, "I'm sorry, love. You'll have to sleep alone in bed tonight." You shaked your head but sent him a flying kiss as you closed the door to the kids' room, smiling at the thought that Hoshiumi always seemed to be the perfect father to your kids.

Maybe a Korra x reader who has the powers of she ra
Tumblr media
(Female Reader)
You were a non bender and had been friends with Korra way before you found the sword. The two of you had been friends since childhood, before Korra and her parents even knew she was the avatar. You were even there when Korra found and took in Naga. When Korra was sent to the White Lotus compound, the White Lotus had tried to end all of Korra’s friendships so she could focus on her training, but you would sneak into the compound almost every night. The guards were usually asleep half the time you snuck in, so it was never that hard to sneak past them.
You were there for Korra when she would reach new achievements, mastering water bending, fire bending, earth bending, etc. You had managed to befriend Katara, who had been the first to recognize the looks of love that you sent the avatar (reminding her of how Aang looked at her). So you didn’t have to sneak in as often the older you got and would just go with Katara instead.
You didn’t go to Republic City with Korra, which broke your best friend’s heart. But she understood why, your mother had gotten sick from an unknown disease and someone had to watch your family bakery until she got better. The two of you would send letter through out the time of separation and all was going well, until your mother passed.
---
Her death had been sudden but not surprising. You had lied to Korra that your mother was getting better when in reality, the last family member you had was slowly slipping away. Not even Katara could heal your mother. You went into a deep depression soon after your mother’s funeral and threw yourself into work. The more you worked, the less time you were alone with your thoughts, the less time you were stuck in an empty house. Slowly, but surely, your letters to Korra were blander and less frequent. Your love for her never faded, but the excitement in your life had.
Finding the sword was your saving grace. You didn’t know how much longer you could last, all the days slowly meshing together into a mess. You had gone on a walk, not something you did often because it left you alone with your thoughts. But something had been, seemingly, calling out to you, urging you to walk. When feeling the urge, you didn’t hesitate to follow it, maybe it was the spirits calling you home to be reunited with you mother.
A cave, a freaking cave... Is what you thought as you stood outside of it. By now, the snow that was falling softly had picked up and you knew you wouldn’t be able to return home until it had calmed. You walked slowly into the cave, trying to make sure there was no wild animal inside of it. As you were checking the cave, a light caught your eye. You followed it to its source, interested in what shone so bright in a cave so dark.
The sword was stabbed into the ground, vines wrapped around it. The light was coming from a bright blue crystal in the middle of the hilt. Who would leave such a beautiful sword here? You wondered as you walked closer to it, looking for traps or even a dead body. When you found nothing, you grabbed the sword and pulled it from the stones and vines. As soon as it was released, a surge of power blasted you back and into the cave wall, knocking you out.
---
You kept and studied the sword after you had woken up in the cave, sword still in hand. You told no one else of what you had witnessed or found and studied in silence, continuing to run your bakery in the day time and practice with the sword through the night. The Legend of She-ra is what the sword was, or supposed to be. You read through the book that most people called a fantasy novel and not non-fiction. You read about the adventures of the best friend squad and a world called Etheria, that was filled with princesses and magic.
You had been confused of the reason that the sword had ended up on Earth but by doing more digging, you found that over thousands of years ago your earth had been Etheria. The magic of the planet slowly effecting everyone and giving them the ability to bend. You learned about how there was light and dark magic, what Raava and Vaatu were made of. How someone named Prince Peekablue created the spirit world with the last of their magic for loved ones to wait for each other before finding eternal peace. Having used their magical powers to see beyond perception to make what they imagined a reality and how the spirit world only became stronger and visible as the magic of the spirits grew.
You read how when the last She-ra, Adora, died the sword wouldn’t work again until it was needed. You read how the sword was hidden for generations until the last of Adora’s bloodline had died out and the sword was lost to the world. Luckily, there were instructions on how to use the sword and practice with it for when it was found. You thanked the spirits that Catra, Finn, and the other authors of the book had left such important information.
---
When Korra returned to the Southern Water Tribe, you weren’t there. After greeting her parents and showing her friends were they would be staying, she ran off towards her best friend and crush’s house. She had missed you since she left the South Pole and even more when you both stopped sending letters. She had tried to get over you and date Mako but it ended almost as fast as it happened. She hoped that being back at the South Pole would rekindle your friendship and maybe even let it go beyond that if she convinced you to return to Republic City with her.

“Korra! Slow down!” Bolin yelled at the avatar as she ran towards your family bakery. Korra just rolled her eyes at Bolin, “C’mon, if you keep up with me, I’ll get you some food. They have the best kale cookies in the world!” Bolin’s eyes lit up at Korra’s proposal and he managed to keep up with her the rest of the way. Both of them ignoring how Mako and Asami rolled their eyes at the two’s childish behavior.
Korra reached the door to the bakery and attempted to enter, being confused when the door wouldn’t budge. “What the...?” Korra muttered as she looked through a window in the building to see that it was empty with chairs put on the tables. Bolin was sad that he wouldn’t be getting any cookies. Korra noticed someone standing across the street and ran over to ask about the bakery. “Excuse me? Excuse me!” “Huh? Oh wow your the avatar!” The kid said as Korra got their attention. “I... Um, yeah. Do you happen to know why the bakery’s closed?” The kid looked around Korra and at the building she was motioning to. “Oh, yeah. The bakery hasn’t been open for almost a month! It sucks too cause they had the best muffins.” The kid said with a frown, causing Korra to frown as well. “A month...” She mumbled to herself, what had she missed while she was away?
Korra tried your house too but you weren’t there. She let her friends go do whatever as she went to Katara to try and find you. “Katara!” Katara looks up from what she was doing and gave Korra a kind smile. “Korra, what can I help you with?” “Do you know where y/n is? Or her mom?” Korra asks hoping Katara knew and not liking it when Katara gained a frown on her face. “You mean y/n never told you? I had just assumed...” “Told me what?” Korra asks, worried at Katara’s reaction. Katara lets out a sigh before responding, “Korra... Y/n’s mother passed away. Y/n hasn’t been the same since. A lot quieter, more reserved...” Katara just trails off, not knowing what to say, while Korra feels like the air got knocked out of her. “What...” Korra says, not really asking, with tears in her eyes. Your mom had been like a second mother to her growing up and hearing that she sick was bad enough but finding out she was dead and that you were dealing with it by yourself, hurt more than she could imagine. Katara pulls the young avatar into a hug trying to comfort her. “Y/n has been gone for almost a month. She told me she would be safe before she left. She didn’t want me to worry.” Katara says, hoping to lessen the worry on Korra.
---
You had left to go to the swamp where the Bayan-grove tree was located. You wanted to go to the spirit world and learn more about magic. You knew that only air benders were supposed to be able to go to the spirit world, but with the new knowledge of magic, you hoped you would be able to as well. So you went to the place most tapped into magic. The tree had grown right over where you read the heart of Etheria was located before all the magic in it got released. You meditated and practiced with the sword everyday, wanting to master using the sword and the other things it could turn into. You hoped that going to the spirit world could connect you with Mara or Adora or anything to help you know that you were the one meant to get the sword, that you were doing what you were supposed to do with the sword, and that you were ready to use it if need be. You weren’t able to enter the spirit until Korra opened the first spirit portal.
---
You spent days in the spirits with a spirit that went by the name of Swift Wind. He was an alicorn that was the previous She-ra’s animal companion, similar to how Aang had Appa and Korra had Naga. You had inquired about when you would be able to get an animal companion but Swift said that it had to happen naturally. You didn’t know how long you had spent in the spirit world but it felt like days before you felt a sudden shift through out the spirit world. “What was that?’ You ask Swift Wind as you felt a sudden disheartening feeling. Swift Wind lifts his horn into the air and you watch as his eyes get big. “Vaatu has escaped.”

A brief followup to this piece, where Mako calls Lin “Mom” because he’s delirious in an ambulance.
Mako wakes up with a sudden jolt, surprising Kya when he tries to jerk upright and fails at it with a small exclamation. "Mako! Mako, honey, it’s okay," she says, standing quickly so he can see her. He visibly calms a bit, but his entire body remains stiff. "Kya?" He questions, voice strained and dry. Kya brushes his hair back from his forehead. "Where’m-" "You’re in the hospital," she tells him gently. "Lin found you yesterday; you’ve been asleep since then." Mako blinks at her, clearly trying to process the information, and she suddenly feels woefully inadequate. She wishes Lin were here for him now that he’s awake, if only because she knows Lin’s presence would ease the anxiousness she can see in his every muscle. He’s not panicking, at least, but the way he’s scanning the room reminds her of Lin after a particularly brutal nightmare. It makes them both look so much younger than they are. Mako is pretty self-reliant. She can count on one hand the number of people he would willingly accept help from. Lin is the one who’s close to him, the one he trusts like a parent, and Kya has never begrudged either of them that relationship. Mako is her son because he is Lin’s son, and therefore Kya loves him like one. That doesn’t mean he has to accept her as another stand-in mother, and she’s okay with that. But she can see how unsettled he still is, pale and washed out by the hospital lights, and she just can’t let it stand. Slowly, so he has a chance to stop her, she leans over and hugs him. To her surprise, Mako’s shoulders relax almost immediately. He leans into her and gingerly lifts his arms to return the embrace. He sucks in a pained breath, the movement aggravating one of a hundred injuries, but he doesn’t pull away. Her heart swells thinking about the trust inherent in the action. Three days is a long time, and triads are creative. Kya doesn’t want to imagine what could have happened to him, but she’s spent the last two days doing exactly that. Every injury rips at her heart. Eventually, she feels his posture change and knows she’s got to lay him back down. "How are you feeling?" She asks, brushing his hair back again. "Arm hurts," he admits quietly. Kya nods, making a mental note to find some more painkillers and another compression sleeve. "M’tired." "Then rest, honey. I’ll be right here." "Kay," he murmurs, eyes already drooping shut. For good measure, he reaches out and holds on to Kya’s hand. She’s on the side of his bad arm- Lin and Bumi both prefer someone on their bad side when they’re laid up, she had figured Mako would be the same- and so that’s the hand he uses. The arm that hurts. Her eyes are suddenly welling up. Every so often, his grip tightens in what she can recognize as a muscle spasm. His scars don’t typically affect his mobility too much, but they haven’t been properly cared for in days, and she knows from experience that makes it much worse. Gently, careful not to wake him, she draws a bit of water from the pitcher on the nightstand and runs it over the compression sleeve he’s already wearing. It’s a bit of an awkward stretch; he’s holding her right hand, so she has to cross her left arm over it to reach his arm. She finds she doesn’t mind.

Blended - 3
Note: Why hello - thanks for staying tuned and being here to check this out. Leave a note what you think. :)
Title: Blended
Previous installment here and chapter one here.
Legend of Korra, Lin/Tenzin, Modern AU, no bending
Blurb: A modern AU with no bending where Lin finds herself with three kids, where Tenzin is Mr Big Shot CEO, where Mako is an overprotective son, where Ikki endears herself to Lin, where Bumi is the cool meddling godfather/uncle and where Pema is out of the picture.
Multi-part, WIP
---
Another teenaged boy joined the first boy and Lin.
Lin ruffled the other boy’s hair in greeting.
Probably noticing Tenzin’s thunderous expression, Jinora turned around.
The first boy gave a half-smile then saluted her. The young girl rolled her eyes as she smiled back and saluted.
Ikki, to his surprise, gave an enthusiastic wave that the boy returned. “Is Mako joining us?”
Mako. Tenzin filed the name away for future review.
Ikki knew him? Just how close are they…
Jinora shrugged. “Mom won’t let him.”
“Oh?” Tenzin’s tone of practiced disinterest came into play.
Jinora rolled her eyes. “He could be quite overprotective.”
Tenzin frowned as both girls turned their attention back to their meal.
How dare that slip of a boy even presume that he was going to do something unsavory.
Lin slipped back into the booth, carrying a root beer float with two straws. “Mako sends his regards.” She nudged the drink towards the two girls. “Anyway, so thought of any questions, sir?”
Sir?
Tenzin cleared his throat as Lin waited with an amused smirk. “You can call me Tenzin, not… sir.”
Not awkward, not awkward at all.
“Okay then, Tenzin.” The emphasis on his name was somewhat derisive.
“Hmmm, yes – I think Ikki would be in good hands.” He paused, thinking of questions to ask.
How is Mr Lin taking this? Where is he? Is he in the picture? Why isn’t he mentioned? Is he okay with having a sleepover at their house? Did he mind that there was a young pup hovering around his woman and child? Or, heaven forbid, is Mr Lin that boy?
He heard that plastic surgery does wonders, and some ethnicities do tend to age better than others.
“I take it you don’t have any questions?” Lin finished her drink by now. “Well, then. For tomorrow, we will be heading out anyway so I can bring Ikki to your house, or we can meet at the mall.”
There was a challenge there. After all, it was a conglomerate in the mall industry that was the root of the demise of their long-term relationship.
“Sure, let’s go to the mall.” And they agreed on a time and place to meet the next day.
Lin waved the waiter over and requested to have the leftover food of the girls to be packed home (“You’ll both remember your unfinished waffles later tonight when you’re finishing your project so best to take it home.”).
Tenzin motioned for the check.
“Already taken care of.” Lin nodded.
“You didn’t have to.” Tenzin mumbled weakly, putting his wallet back in his pocket.
He was met with a shrug. “Consider it as a belated welcome gift to this city.” Lin stood up once the leftover food was brought over by the waiter, and they all prepared to head out.
Tenzin was well-aware of the two boys from the other table following them.
“Mako, Bolin – please help Jinora and Ikki with their things while I get the car ready.” Lin walked over to where she was parked to turn on the air conditioning.
For his part, Tenzin led the children to his car, surreptitiously watching their interaction.
Ikki gave one of them (Bolin, was it?) a high five while Jinora was quickly exchanging words with Mako.
As he was pulling out the key from his pocket, a hand shot in front of him.
“I’m Mako.”
He shook the hand without hesitation. “Tenzin.” He clicked his key to unlock the car and opened the trunk, where the overnight bag of Ikki is as well as the other art supplies of both girls.
The other boy came forward now, extending his own hand. “Bolin here.” He grinned widely, a touch friendlier than Mako.
Tenzin grasped it and introduced himself as well. He handed Bolin one of the heavier bags while Ikki and Jinora went forward to get their lighter ones. Mako, meanwhile, hung back and was sizing him up from the looks of it.
Only, he wasn’t sizing him up apparently.
Mako moved silently to pick up the bulkiest of the materials so that Jinora did not have to carry it.
The young girl beamed up at him, saying. “That’s why you’re my favorite brother.”
Brother?
“Hey!” Bolin grumbled from the other side as he swung on his back two duffel bags. “What about me?”
Correction: brothers?
“You’re my favorite brother-friend.” Ikki punched his arm.
Bolin laughed boisterously while they went off to Lin’s car.
Ikki turned to face her father quickly who was bringing up the rear. “Don’t tell Meelo.”
Tenzin raised his hands in surrender. “Of course not.”
“Well, technically, I’m not your brother so…” Bolin wringed his hands worriedly. Thinking that maybe Tenzin would say something about it.
So… brothers.
Tenzin had a lot of questions while Lin and her children loaded the things of Jinora and Ikki into their trunk. The boys were a lot older than Jinora. Much, much older… Something that did not quite sit well with him.
Before he knew it, Tenzin was left at the parking lot as they waved good-bye at him as the car sped off.
 ---
Pema settled herself at a quiet corner in the coffee shop. She placed down her bag beside her and let the waiter place the tea tray on the table.
She checked the time on her tablet.
It was time for her weekly call with her daughter.
Ever since the divorce, she and Tenzin tried to figure out a way to co-parent despite being a couple of countries apart. One of the things they agreed on is that they were not going to let their children bounce from one household to another a lot during the school year. Another is that Pema would continue to consistently remain in contact with the kids through a weekly video call. This also linked to their eventual agreement that Ikki was to have her own (child-locked and parental monitored) phone.
It was something that Pema looked forward to every week.
For all the differences that she and her ex-husband had and the reasons that they went into the marriage, Pema does not regret her children with him.
“Hi Mommy!”
“Hi Sweetie!” Pema found herself smiling at Ikki’s toothy grin. “How are you doing?”
Ikki, as she expected, launched into this enthusiastic story about what she had been up to since the last time they chatted. When she was in the middle of gesturing and talking about her big sister-little sister project, other voices wafted into the call - voices that Pema was unfamiliar with.
Pema leaned closer to peer into the screen, brows furrowing, only noticing that the background of Ikki’s call was different.
In the background, someone (a male someone) let out a loud whoop.
Ikki paused to take a deep breath and Pema interjected. “Dear, where are you right now?”
“Oh-oh-oh! That’s what I was going to tell you next, Mommy!” Ikki waved her hands excitedly in front of her. “I’m on a sleepover with Jinora! At Jinora’s house!”
Pema was surprised but did not let it show. She did not want to dampen Ikki’s delight. She would not be that mother (she would not be her mother). And, well, at the end of the day, she did trust Tenzin’s parenting decisions. “That’s great. How is it so far?”
“It’s fun! She has two brothers. Two brothers, Mommy! And not two Meelo’s too. They’re very nice. Her mommy is really nice also – not like Korra’s uncle. Korra’s uncle is grumpy at home but nice outside. Jinora’s mommy is nice both outside and at home.”
Pema had to bite back a smile at Ikki’s commentary. Having crossed paths with Unalaq during her marriage with Tenzin, she did not particularly enjoy spending time with the politician. Everything was mostly for show and behind closed doors, to family, the man could be quite cold and standoffish.
There was raucous laughter from Ikki’s side and Ikki looked to the side, to someone or something off-camera.
“That’s Bolin, Mommy. Jinora’s older brother.” The view shook a bit as Ikki was likely moving her phone around to show her mother the view of the room. “And that’s her brother, Mako.”
Pema could see that they were probably in some sort of study room. Behind Ikki, there were two computers set-up, each with a teenaged boy sitting in front of it wearing a headset.
“And here’s Jinora.”
The view moved again and a familiar girl who she has talked to in previous calls waved at her. Jinora was beside Ikki and was in the process of gluing something to a small card.
Ikki placed her phone steady again and went into detail about the project they were working on, and Pema could see the door at her side opening.
“Bolin, Mako – no yelling, you know Ikki will be on a call right now.” The woman who entered the room hissed audibly at the teenagers.
“Sorry, Mom -.” The stocky boy started to apologize then trailed off, inaudible to Pema’s ears.
What struck Pema most, however, was not the amount of glitter that Ikki and Jinora were putting on their projects, or the two boys punching each other’s arm when they probably get a point in their computer game. No, it was the woman who stood watching their game, hands at her waist.
It was a woman that she has never met but was quite familiar with.
Pema was left pondering how her daughter landed at a sleepover at Lin Beifong’s house.
 ---
“OMG – is that – is that a background image of the Fire Ferrets’ place?  Where did you download that?! Can you send it to me? Pleaaaase! Didn’t know you’re a fan of the Fire Ferrets!!”
Ikki read and reread the message of her cousin Korra at their chat.
It did not make sense to her.
What background was she talking about?
She scrolled up to the last picture she sent which was of her and Jinora holding up their project with their final touches completed.
Jinora nudged her, noticing her preoccupation. “You, okay?”
Ikki wrinkled her nose, showing her phone screen to Jinora. “What’s a Fire Ferret?”
“My ears are tingliiiing - did someone say Fire Ferret?” Bolin jumped in between them, his hand cupping his ear. “You don’t know who the Fire Ferrets are?” At Ikki’s slow head shake, he clicked his tongue and placed his arms around the shoulders of the girls. “I can’t believe Jinora didn’t tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
Jinora rolled her eyes good-naturedly. “I don’t think Ikki would have been interested.”
“Don’t you put down her possible interest in esports!” Bolin flicked his sister’s nose with affection. “The Fire Ferrets is today’s up-and-rising, the ones-to-watch-out, most promising esports team!” He followed up with a faux-whisper, “At least that’s what eSports Unlimited.com says in their latest ranking article. Impressive huh?”
Ikki just blinked up at him.
Bolin did not let that deter him. “And, what’s more – you’re looking at one of them now!”
“Cut it out, Bo.” Mako sighed from his position at his desk, having taken off his headset. “I hardly think Tenzin would like Ikki to be exposed to the wonderful world of esports at her age.”
“And, you’ll be right at that point, kid.” All four of them faced the door, where Lin had peeked her head. “Tenzin would not be keen on prolonged screen time and neither would he appreciate if we bring his daughter back with darkened eyebags. Bedtime now, kids!”
The pronouncement brought a cacophony of complains.
“But, Mooom -.”
“Please Ms Lin – I-.”
“Mom, we’re too old to have a bedtime.”
“Kids – please, we’re going to need to wake up early.”
“We can still wake up early – our body clock’s fantastic.”
“No.”
“Yeah, we’ll even prepare breakfast for everyone.” A punch. “Ow! What was that for?”
A snort. “Speak for yourself.”
“I’m holding you all to that then. I’ll head on – good night, kids!”
A door closes and another punch. “What was that for, now?”
 ---
Little did they know, while Lin was having a smidge of trouble getting the kids to get to bed, across town, a certain businessman was having trouble sleeping.
After dinner and after tucking Meelo to bed (with two bedtime stories read), Tenzin found himself exhausted from the week (and day) he has had. And so, he had gone off to prepare for bed but was unable to find a comfortable position to sleep.
Who was he kidding – he had a lot of thoughts running through his mind.
Feeling restless still, Tenzin got back up from bed and went to pull out his laptop.
He scrolled through various folders until he found what he was looking for. His fingers tapped swiftly on the keyboard, the password a muscle memory. However, his cursor hovered over the ok button, unable to belie his hesitation and uncertainty.
Tenzin paused and asked himself if he really wanted to do this.
Eventually, he pushed through and out popped the window showing files upon files. Scanned documents, audio files, slide shows, videos, saved emails and photos.
One of the reasons why he managed to bring back the White Lotus Corporation to life is his tenacity, his dogged determination to see things through. Tonight, it is this same tenacity that brought him to go through his past as he started to go through old photos with one Lin Beifong. He went through the photos and emails – trying to see, trying to look for a clue at what point did Lin start showing or possibly start getting involved with the boys’ father, at what point in their relationship did he not become enough.
Tenzin would later come to wonder if he should have just let sleeping dogs lie.

Note: Dundundun. Misunderstandings upon misunderstandings – my favorite genre. Haha! Hope all is good with you reading from the other side of the screen. Just a note here – Pema won’t be a nasty bitch here, and no hating gonna happen. Trying to make this as light as possible, so no overly angsty~ plot lines. Crossing my fingers this experimental story works out fine haha.
Share your thoughts, theories, feelings, anything about this story with me. 😊 I am trying to get back to writing so this might not be up to my usual length or content. Happy to hear from you though.

The Transfer Part 9
*This bih is 4k+ long so to read it fully just follow them link*
“What if they don't like me? What if they think I'm annoying? What if-”
“Enough!” Lin raised her voice exasperated.
You had been pacing for the last ten minutes waiting for the ferry. You were rethinking the piercings and the short sleeve blouse. You kept your hands on your arms in an attempt to cover up. You felt too vulnerable for your liking and the anxiety started getting to you.
“Everything is going to be fine Y/N. Stop overthinking it. They are all very accepting of everyone’s differences. You won't be the reason they stop thinking this way.” She offered her knowledge. “The ferry is almost here, come down. Everything will be okay.”
You nodded, you were still nervous but not as much. The ferry arrived and both of you got on and some people started to stare at you. Lin would stare at them back until they got uncomfortable and minded their own business. You placed your hand on your lower back, the stress was making your stitches hurt, Lin saw this and placed her hand above yours.
“Is it hurting?” She asked softly.
“It happens when I get stressed, but if I apply a bit of pressure it helps.” You answer, you take your arm off but she keeps it on. You tried not to think of it too much but the warm blush was already spreading to your ears.
Soon the ferry arrives at the temple's docks and you both get out. You can see the long road ahead and sigh. You start walking alongside the earthbender until you reach a long line of stairs. You took the first step holding tightly onto Lin, a few more steps and you had to take a moment to breathe.
The chief looked at you and used her bending to make a platform under both of you. “Hold on.” She said as the platform started moving upwards. After a few minutes both of you were finally in the courtyard of the temple. A young girl with long hair and two buns made her way to you. She smiled and started asking questions rapidly.
“Are you Y/N? How old are you? Are you a firebender? Do you like animals? Can I see your tattoos? How many tattoos do you have? How many piercings do you have?”
You stood there a moment collecting the information before smiling back at her.
“Yes, 25, yes, also yes, sure, like 15? A few.”
She scanned you up and down and grabbed your arms. She started looking at them and flipping them to see the full picture.
“You're so cool and pretty!” The girl charmed as she stared.
“Ikki, leave her alone, she's tired.” Lin growled.
The girl seemed unfazed at Lin’s antics.
You chuckled “It's alright Chief. So you're Ikki? Nice to meet you, I like your buns.”
“It's my signature hairstyle.” She smirked as she touched her hair. “Come on, dinner's ready.”
You followed the girl inside where a tall man with blue arrow tattoos and a tan woman with short hair greeted you. Your eyes widened when you realized who the people in front of you were.
You bowed deeply and immediately winced. “Master Tenzin, Avatar Korra. It's an honor to be blessed with your presence.” You said formally with a smile.
“It's an honor to meet you officer Y/N, we've heard so much.” Tenzin said softly.
“Yes! But due to your back injury we would prefer you not to bow. It could hurt you more.”
You blushed and nodded. “I'm just in such awe to meet such incredible people.”
“We are very happy to meet you too.” A new feminine voice said.
You look up to see the one and only Asami Sato.
“Miss Sato!” You automatically bowed again and winced.
Asami laughed. “Let's go take a seat, I think your back would appreciate it.”
The heiress took your hand and guided you to the table where Kya, Amara and Pema were sitting. You also saw Mako and another man with green eyes sitting next to him. Lin sat on one of your sides while Asami sat on the other. There were two more kids, another girl with arrow tattoos and a boy with short black hair.
“Y/N this is Bolin, my brother.” Mako said, introducing you.
You reached over and shook his hand. “A pleasure to meet you Bolin, Your brother has told me great things about you.”
“Aww bro really?” Bolin said with teary eyes.
Mako scoffed. “You've already met Korra, Amara, Kya and Asami, so she's Pema.” He said pointing to the woman near Tenzin. “She's Tenzin’s wife and mother to Ikki, Jinora and Meelo, the kids next to her.”
“I'm happy to meet all of you.” You said smiling. The pain started once more and you tried to reach behind you but the position was awkward.
Lin leaned into you. “You need help with that?”
You blushed but nodded, her hand went to your lower back applying steady preaching. You sighed in relief. “Thank you” You could see a blush as she nodded and couldn't help but grin.
“So, Y/N…” Korra started. “Let me start by saying that I LOVE your style.”
You smiled. “Thank you Avatar Korra.”
“Just Korra is fine.” She looked at Asami. “You look really cool, I mean when we saw the pictures in the newspaper it was blurry so we didn't get to see the details.”
“But your tattoos are amazing! It makes you look even more beautiful than you already are.” Asami finished.
You were blushing profusely. “Oh thank you honestly. They are just as much part of me as my hair.”
Kya knew the two women were enjoying flustering you. So she charged in to help you ease your nerves.
“How are you finding the city so far?” The waterbender asked.
“Oh! It's been really cool!” You smiled. “I haven't been able to see a lot since I'm working a lot but there's a cafe I'm falling in love with. It's close to the precinct and they sell the best strawberry and cream biscuits I've ever tasted.” You gush.
“Oh you like sweets? You have to try Kya’s fruit tart, it's the best thing ever.” Korra responded smiling.
“Yeah! Oh and you should go to a noodle place we know, they sell the best noodles!” Bolin said to you.
“I'll definitely try it out!”
You had been in the conversation so long that you didn't even notice Lin’s hand off your back. You looked at her discreetly but she was focused on a conversation with Kya.
“Are you single?” Meelo asked boldly.
“Yup.” You said looking back at him.
“Do you like boys or girls?” Ikki asked.
“Women.” You answer carefully.
Lin looked at you and took a sip of her tea. The gesture didn't go unnoticed.
“Me too!” Bolin said smiling.
“That's nice to know Y/N, we'll have to introduce you our clubs and places.” Kya sais smiling.
“So Y/N, tell us about yourself. What's your story?” Asami asked.
“My story?” You looked at her quizzically.
“Yeah, who is Y/N? What happened that made you end up here as a police officer?” Korra asked.
“Oh well I think that story is far too long and boring.” You chuckled.
“We are listening.” Pema said softly.
You suddenly felt every eye in the room looking at you, your nerves grew and you started feeling anxious again. You looked up at Lin and she gave you a nod.
“Okay well, I'll go chronologically? So it doesn't confuse anyone so much?”
“Sure!” Korra said happily.
You smiled. “Okay here we go. My name is Y/N L/N, I was born here in Republic City but I've lived in Ba Sing Se since I was a child. I'm a firebender like both my parents.
“When I was born my mother moved us to Ba Sing Se, when I was two my father left us. I have no memories of him and can't remember his face, I just know that his departure hurt my mother greatly. My mom was a strict woman, everything had to be perfect for her including me. She would spar with me from the moment I could bend, it was something we bonded over… or I thought we did.
“She wasn't very emotional, hugs and kisses we're definitely not her language. But that didn't mean I didn't love her greatly, she and my father will always hold a place in my heart. I grew to respect my element and be thankful for my life and the things I was given. I loved making friends and taking care of animals.
“When I was seven my mother left and I was all on my own. A farmer took me for a while until a real foster family could take me in. and honestly? It was the worst. I ended running away from them and later on ended running from every single foster family I ever got. I became an orphaned runaway.”
“So you're an orphan?” Mako asked.
“Yup!” You said like it was nothing.
“We are orphans too!” Bolin said.
“Me too.” Asami said more shyly.
“I mean it's not bad, I took care of things.” You responded, taking a sip of tea.
“How did you survive on the streets so young?” Lin asked.
“I joined a local pack of kids. We were all stealing and getting into trouble. I was very slick with my hands, could take your socks without taking off your boots.”
“Literally?” Bolin asked.
“Literally, you’d be surprised.” You laughed.
Lin looked at you sternly.
“Hey, I had to stay alive somehow. Besides, it caught up to me. I would always have trouble with the law and one day Chief Lei Ba got sick of my shenanigans and arrested me after stealing cabbages-”
“Cabbages?! From all the things to steal, why cabbages?!” Mako asked in disbelief.
“It wasn't for me! I found a goat gorilla in a cage! Poor thing looked awfully skinny and someone had to feed it!”
“Okay, okay what happened next?” Kya asked intrigued.
“Well he took me in, handcuffs and everything. It was like every other time. He took me in, arrested me, wrote about my crime, scolded me and sent me off. Only this time he didn't send me off. He took me to his office, sat me down and threw a few logs onto his fireplace.”
Lin wondered if this was the part where something bad happened that made you fear fire. She was on the edge listening to you.
“He looked at me-” You continued. “And took my file that was filled with my transgressions and threw it on the fire.”
“What?!” Amara asked, amazed.
You laughed. “Let me finish! He scolded me about what I did and after that we stayed quiet. He then told me he had found a family in the Fire Nation that would adopt me and give me a new life. They were soldiers themselves but had a few kids and agreed to take me in, per the chief’s request. I guess they were friends or something. Or, he would take care of me and take me off the streets, he was going to be strict and there would be a lot of rules but those were the only options I had.”
“And you chose to stay.” Lin responded.
“Yup, I chose to stay. It was hard at first but I made it out and thrived. He took me in as his own and gave me a new life. I became his shadow and did everything to try and make him proud. I graduated school early and as soon as I grabbed the diploma I was running down to the academy’s door enlisting myself. He almost had a stroke when he found out.”
“But, I was first in my class. Worked my a- buttoff every day. Did extra, worked more, fought more, study more and at the end it was all so worth it.”
Lin could see the shine in your eyes as you talked.
“I remember the day of my graduation. When the chief gave us all our badges, I was the last one in line. The runt of the litter. He shook my hand, placed my badge and looked me in the eyes and-”
You felt your eyes water. “He said… I'm so proud of you Y/N. So very proud.” You wiped a tear that fell from your eye. “I managed not to cry until after the ceremony but when we were walking back home we hugged and I cried for hours.”
“The first day everyone already knew me, I mean, I'm the chief’s daughter so it's not like I was a stranger. But finally, finally I felt like I had a family again. The rest is history.” You smiled.
Bolin was crying like a little kid while Lin looked at you with glossy eyes.
“Wow, that's… it reminds me of my own story.” Mako said smiling. “This job means a lot to me too.”
“It's more than a job, it's who I am. Helping people, being there for the ones in need, it's… it's my calling.”
“Wait wait! What about the tattoos!?” Ikki asked expectantly.
“Oh my tattoos?” You chuckled. “I got drunk one night with the rest of the officers and we got our badge numbers tattooed. I woke up with the ink in my arm, it was just the numbers and it made it look like I was some sort of prisoner so I went back later on to add some flowers around it and that's how it started.”
You showed the old tattoo on your arm.
“What's your favorite tattoo??”
“This badgermole someone very special drew for me.” You said showing your bicep, it was a scribble drawing of a badgermole’s head.
“It looks so ugly! Badgermoles dont look like that!” Meelo said with no filter.
“Meelo!” Pema scolded.
“It looks like it's been drawn by a child.” Asami said looking at it.
“Yup, little Eliah. That kid will stay in my heart forever.”
“Ooh! What's the story?” Bolin asked, resting his head on his palms.
“He was a sick boy that wanted to be a police officer, so I convinced the Chief to make him an honorary officer. He agreed as long as I was the one taking responsibility for him. So I did, made him my little partner. We did traffic stops, tickets, arrests, chases.”
“You took a child to a chase?” Lin asked.
“I always took care of him!” You said quickly.
“He was the sweetest. I remember how happy he was being a police officer. But of course he got worse until he was on his deathbed. We would visit him every day and bring some reports to tell him how things were going that day. He asked for my favorite animal and I told him. He drew this-” You said pointing to your bicep. “And I got it tattooed. My artist even made a stencil so we could have matching tattoos. When I showed it to him he was ecstatic laughing and as vivacious as ever. It made me so happy.”
“He passed away two days later and we gave him an official police burial. With escort and everything. We laid him down with the rest of our fallen officers and we watched over his mother. He was the only family she had so it was hard for her but we stood by her. A year later she died of the same illness.”
“Wow…” Kya said with wide eyes. “That's a lot…”
“You must be proud that you allowed that child to have the life he wanted.” Tenzin spoke.
“He was our little brother.” You said, sighing.
“I'm going to get a lot of tattoos like yours!” Ikki said with a smirk. “It's going to be so cool and I'm going to look tough like you and aunt Lin!”
You smiled back at the young girl. “You can be just as tough as the Chief without tattoos. She doesn't have any and she can strike fear in anyone by just narrowing her eyes.”
The earthbender looked at you in a glare. You chuckled nervously. “See? Terrifying.”
Ikki crosses her arms. “But I want to have cool tattoos like you!”
You thought about it for a moment before smiling. “You sure you want tattoos like mine? What's wrong with the blue arrows? They are super cool!”
“No they aren't! They are so boring!”
“Hey!” Jinora said offended.
“Besides, I want many different ones instead of just one full tattoo.”
You nodded. “You know, when you reach adulthood, I know an artist that does amazing work and has been in the industry for decades.”
Ikki beamed. “Really?!”
“Absolutely-”

Do you have any theories/headcanons as to why Lin is so reserved with her emotions?
And do you have any theories/headcanons for the Kya's want to travel the world rather than settling somewhere?
-Y❤️❤️
I mean Lin is reserved with her emotions because everyone in her life has hurt her in some way shape or form.
-/-
Kya is half air nomad. It’s in her blood.
Toph:
Toph has never given her positive affirmation. Lin has been trying so hard to get some sort of praise from her and nothing. Toph never gave her attention and when it came time to have her back (when Suyin caused the scars) Toph basically betrayed her and covered for Suyin and made it all go away. Everything except the scars that will be permanently displayed on her cheeks.
I want to head canon that maybe...just maybe Toph didn’t realize the extent of the damage Suyin had caused to Lin. Toph could have thought that Lin was over-exaggerating on the markings. Also think for that reason she didn’t let Lin get immediate treatment from a healer which was crucial for healing time and less scaring to occur. Only giving Lin time to just “slap a bandage on and toughen up.”
Suyin:
Suyin was a brat as a kid. She valued her freedom and because of that she legit thought she was invincible and could get away with anything because her mom practically owns the city.
Suyin is the baby which frankly only further pushes the whole. Baby gets what she wants. Doesn’t apologize for any of her actions or thinks that a simple “sorry” erases everything. Lives in a “Me” world.
Suyin get’s in trouble for driving as an accomplice. Suyin gets send to go live with her rich grandparents who will spoil her with immense gifts. While Lin just stays in the city and continues to groveling work. Forced to get used to the markings Suyin left which she never apologized to Lin for.
Tenzin:
Tenzin left her. That’s the short version.
Tenzin was her best friend turned romantic life partner. Lin knew Tenzin since she could sustain memories. Every life moment it was always her and Tenzin, they were only a year apart so they grew up together. Later started to date and they grew up being each other’s support systems.
Although yes they did have love for each other, I feel like that love was always platonic. They confused that love for romance because everyone around them basically teased them of their hidden crushes. Once that idea gets put into your head it’s kind of hard to not think about it and your brain starts to be like “okay yeah maybe they are on to something”. I feel like it was more on Lin’s side than Tenzin. I think Tenzin for sure had a massive crush on Lin.
back to the reason... Tenzin and Lin are both so career driven that they worked tirelessly to become someone their respectful parents would be proud of. Lin as a police officer and eventual Chief of Police and Tenzin being a councilman and representative for the Air Nation.
Once Aang’s passing Tenzin got more pressed by himself (I’m sure from the rest of the world too) to start producing the next generation of air benders. Although I would like to believe that Tenzin respected and supported Lin’s wishes on her career goal. I feel like he wanted Lin to put a pause to help him carry his goal first. Which Lin was adamant on not doing. She never wanted kids and was never going to change. Tenzin probably hoped that after time Lin might change and in turn caused many fights and arguments. Tenzin hope he could have the best of both worlds, Lin and kids. unfortunately that wasn’t the case so after two decades of being with Lin he had to break up with her.
Tenzin is such an awkward bean so when he broke up with Lin he definitely broke up. Like cut off all communication with Lin, because he probably thought that would be best for Lin. The only time they would talk would be professional meetings when they had to see each other for council meetings. Security and protection details for the Air Nation. They went from best friends and each others support systems to practical strangers. Which was honestly worse, imo. Lin didn’t just lose a boyfriend. She lost her person. The one person she could rely on for anything. The person who knew her likes and dislikes. The one person she wasn’t afraid to let down her walls, let down her hair and let it flow. The one person who wouldn’t judge her when she cried or laughed. So when Tenzin left, it broke Lin. More than anyone could it was Tenzin that really caused Lin to close up and say no more.
-/-
Kya
Kya is half air nomad.
Kya is a spiritual being and likes to live in harmony with nature. She's fun-loving and had a strong sense of humor.
I feel like Kya often liked the idea of traveling the world to interact with other peoples and getting to know other cultures. Without the attachment of being the “Avatar’s daughter”. She wanted to be known as Kya and just Kya.
Which she did accomplish as she became a renowned healer in her own right. All of her years of traveling I’m sure spent learning on different healing techniques and properties to improve on. Kya is easily the best healer in Legend of Korra, which I’m sure her mother is beyond proud. She managed to keep Jinora alive for weeks despite her spirit no longer being tethered to her body and was capable of treating Bumi's head wound without water ever touching him. She even managed to heal Korra, Bolin, and Mako simultaneously with her spirit water. Three people at. the. same. time!!! The only thing that ever posed too big an issue was the metallic poison in Korra in season 3.
Kya is a person who would rather experience it rather than read about it or listen someone else share their life. She is open to listen to the stories but she wants to go out there and experience it herself.
Kya doesn’t have a problem with settling. She can stay at a place for a couple months at a time. The most maybe a year because she gets the itch to go set off to a new adventure.

Ninjago/Avatar The Last Airbender au :)
(more like Legend of Korra au at this point tho, its based in the future, like 2 generations past Korra, but its still more like the Korra era tbh, though i compare some of the characters to atla characters)
Lets talk about Lloyd first. 2 generations of avatars after legend of Korra, the avatar would be from the fire nation, it turns out to be the fire lord himself’s son, and this this is Lloyd. Very ‘if Zuko was the avatar-’ energy. So, Lloyd is the avatar, at the time im thinking he’s still mastering all the elements, he’s done firebending and a little bit of airbending so far, he hasnt done any training in waterbending/earthbending but he can do really minimal stuff, like similar levels to what katara could do in season 1 before they got to the northern water tribe.
Garmadon, the main villain, is of course the firelord, and of course that means that Lloyd has ninjago-movie-level/Zuko-level daddy-issues. Harumi is an Azula equivalent, im just saying, Garmadon adopted her in ninjago and she never had a healthy relationship with Lloyd anyway, so, ive decided they’re siblings now and they hate eachother.
Kai and Nya are very similar to Bolin and Mako from legend of Korra, they live in republic city (which is the equivalent of ninjago city), the two of them are of course firebenders and waterbenders, and they do pro-bending for a living, but I like to imagine that unlike Bolin and Mako, theyre on opposite rival teams.
Jay lives in that metal city from Korra, i think its called Zaofu, yea that. His parents, Ed and Edna, are retired higher-ups in the earth kingdom’s government, and they are both really good metalbenders, Jay was seemingly adopted from the fire nation, and is a firebender with an affinity for lightningbending. The Walker family are among those making the most innovative technology of its time, probably around the same level as our generation, because theyre able to use Jay’s lightning as electricity.
Cole also lives in Zaofu, he’s an earthbender but not a metalbender which must make things quite difficult, I imagine he’s great friends with Jay because they’re both different in a place full of metalbenders. When Cole’s mom died, i think Cole would move to republic city, looking for somewhere that doesn’t remind him of his Mom, and so a place where loads of people have different bending abilities must sound great.
He ends up befriending Kai and Nya after getting a job at the probender’s gym and then stopping one of those earth disc things that was going to hit someone in the head during practice, the smith siblings convince him to become a probender himself, and they end up fighing over which team he gets to join (ive also decided that Cole finally gets his long awaited gay love intrest and that he’s in Kai’s team ao Cole joins that team so that he can get closer to him).
Zane was made in Zaofu, by doctor julien who was a very close friend of the Walkers, Zane knew Jay and and Cole well. Zane moved to the northern water tribe after discovering that he was a waterbender and wanting to get proper training in order to be able to forfill his canon goal/purpose of being able to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
When Lloyd was 12 he ran away from the fire nation, fearing some big attack that Garmadon and Harumi were planning, so he went to seek allies to help him fight, and maybe learn the other elements too. He saw a pro-bender’s match being publicised and decided that these strong buff looking ppl were a good place to look for allies and people to help him train. He ends up meeting with cole, who was the most inclined to talk to some random ass guy who messaged them saying that they had to meet and form an alliance, they end up forming team avatar 3.0.
Cole contacts Jay, whos still in zaofu, saying that he and this group of people are going arround gaining allies to fight garmadon. They are next going to the northern air temple to gain air nomad allies and get lloyd some better airbending training, and, just like in canon, jay was trying to learn how to fly (yall seen his backstory where he jumped off a building to test out a glider?) but yeah because of that jay was like heck yeah dude i’ll meet u there, and he later joins the group
This is of course, nearby the nothern water tribe (both got north in their name), so while Lloyd was learning airbending, Jay, Cole, and Nya went on ahead to the Northern water tribe, because Jay and Cole wanted to reunite with their best friend Zane and Nya wanted to see if being there could improve her waterbending abilities. Cole and Jay’s connection with Zane made things easier to form an alliance with the Northern Water tribe, they arranged for Lloyd to go there at some point to learn waterbending after he’s done at the Northern air temple and to get some of the strongest nothern water tribe waterbenders to come help when garmadon/harumi do that big attack thing. Lloyd doesn’t get to go there in time though because Garmadon/ Harumi do the thing and the gang need to stop them asap.

Day 23: Argument
“Nice of you to show up.”
Pearl sighed. Of all the people she didn’t want to have to deal with today, her oldest brother was right there on top. “And hello to you too, San.” She held up a hand in warning. “Let me just stop you right there, before you launch yourself into whatever heartfelt speech you feel it’s your familial duty to throw my way. I’m not here for you. I’m not here for anyone but Granny. So let’s just say our hellos and avoid each other for the rest of the party, hmmm?”
“And you think that’s it.” He crossed his arms and glared at her, channeling his inner Uncle Mako for all he was worth. San may as well have been Uncle Mako’s, for all he resembled Dad in the old personality department. Although, come to think of it, Uncle Mako had always been kind to her. No need to drag good old Uncle Mako into it.
“I know that’s it. Because I’m an adult now, San. And adults can choose to walk away. Like this. Watch and learn.” She turned around and walked away from him. Fucking San. The older he got, the more the stick up his ass was turning into an entire forest.
“Walking away is what you do best,” he shot after her, but she just waved a hand and kept going. For the genius of the family he wasn’t very original with his insults.
She hadn’t wanted to come at all. Family events were not a good time. Dad would invariably cry; Mom would do that thing where she was forcing herself into politeness when everyone knew she wanted to tear down the roof, San would be a dick and the rest of her family would either ignore her or try to make awkward conversation. The only exceptions were Bu, who genuinely tried to reach out and was the most decent out of all of them and Sayuri, who could genuinely give a fuck what anyone else thought and who, for reasons that had always escaped her, actually seemed to enjoy her company. Naoki was snide, Meili was holier-than-thou, Zhi just stammered and was awkward and the Flowers always presented a united front so who the fuck ever knew what they thought individually about anything? The Temple cousins were fine, as all that went, but she hardly knew them and they were mostly too young to bother with anyhow.
Granny, at least, was straight up about what she thought. And had always been nonjudgmental. And for fuck’s sake the woman was turning ninety. That was worth the celebration, or at least some of it. She’d most likely cut out early. It made it easier on everyone.
“Are you even going to speak to her?”
Oh for the love of fucking Raava. San was in full Family Patriarch mode. He’d lengthened his stride and had caught up with her. That’s what she got for not ducking into the toilet until he left.
“Her being…?”
“Cut it the fuck out, Pearl.”
She stopped then, weary of it. Him. Them. All of it, everything. “And this is your business how, exactly? Who fucking died and made you the moral police? Because apparently you’ve gotten it into your stubborn fucking earthbending head that I need to somehow justify myself to you and newsflash! I don’t.”
“You sure as fuck need to justify yourself to your daughter,” he ground out, his nostrils getting all white the way they did when he was about to pop his top. People thought San never got angry but that was because they’d never lived with him. It just took him longer, that’s all.
“That might be the case. But that’s between me and her. Not you.” She could get pissed too. “Go fuck yourself, San. Nobody needs you playing the hero except for Zhi, maybe. And he replaced you with his pretty desert boy, right?”
She could see him physically walking himself back from losing it; he closed his eyes and took deep breaths, trying to soften his jaw. Just like Uncle Mako. If she didn’t know her parents and Uncle Mako better she would have wondered. “Zhi has nothing to do with this.”
“No. You have nothing to do with this, San. Which is the problem, isn’t it? You don’t like it when you can’t reach in there and control everything.” She scoffed. “Just like Mom. But you can’t. Whatever there is between my daughter and me is something for the two of us, and not you.” She shoved herself right up into his face. “It’s a bitter pill, I know. But you’re the one who pulled it out of the bottle, so you’re the one who gets to swallow it.” She started walking again. She’d make her apologies to Granny later, come back next week when everyone else had gone. But now it was time to go.
San grabbed at her arm and she automatically brought up her wind, blasting him back. She might not have been able to move him otherwise - San was a dick, but he was a powerful dick - but she’d surprised him and he hit the wall and bounced off it. She stared at him. “Do not ever do that again. Ever. I am not yours for the grabbing.”
She’d expected him to come for her but he surprised her again. “You’re right. Sorry.” He put his hands up in the sign all three of them had done as children to show they meant peace. Not that either of them had ever really gotten physical with Bu. That was off limits. Like so many other things with Bu. “Pearl. Don’t fucking run off again. Everyone’s happy you’re here.”
Her laugh was so bitter she nearly choked on it. “Nobody is ever happy I’m here. But I told Grampy I’d make it, so here I am.”
“I don’t get it. Just help me get it. Why?” San stepped towards her and suddenly he looked like Dad, his eyes filling. “Why? She was just a baby, Pearl. Just an innocent baby.”
She could feel her own tears coming and fuck, that pissed her off even more. “So was I. I was sixteen when I got pregnant. Not much older than she is now. I didn’t even fucking know I was pregnant, that’s what kind of a baby I was. I was out there on my own and-” she cut herself off and stepped backwards. “Never mind. You’ve made it clear for years you don’t care.”
“Pearlie-” he started, and that drew a choked sob out of her. “Pearlie. I know you were young. But Mom and Dad would have never kicked you out. You had to have known that.”
She stared at him for a long time, wiping her tears angrily off with the sleeves of her wingsuit. “You know, you weren’t around a lot when I was little.”
He scoffed and shook his head. “What are you talking about? Of course I was.”
“No. You were always off with Zhi. You spent more time at Uncle Mako’s than you did at our house.” At his expression she threw out a hand. “San. You did. Mom and Dad shuttled you off there all the time. Fuck’s sake, you had a bed in his room, your own dresser, your own clothes. It was as much your room as it was his. There were days - weeks! - when you just didn’t come home, you’d go straight there after school with Naoki and back again the next morning. Mom would take Bu and me with her to the Island and it would be days without seeing you.” She shook her head, looking at him, scowling in denial. “I remember when I was little asking Dad if you were actually our brother or if you were our cousin. That’s how often you weren’t around.”
“It wasn’t like that,” he said, but she could see he was thinking about it.
“It was exactly like that. And at home? It was all about Bu. Everything was about Bu.” She shut her eyes and blew out a breath more forcefully than she’d meant to, sending a silver vase full of flowers right over with a weighty thud. “Look, I know it wasn’t his fault. He didn’t ask to be sick. I mean, I get that now. But as a little kid?” She drew herself up. “Pearl! Be gentle with Bu, he can’t run. Pearl! Don’t get Bu upset, remember his breathing! Pearl! Fuck right off and be content with whatever crumbs are left after Bu gets his!” She threw her hands out. “All my life, for as long as I can remember, it was always about Bu. I was just the afterthought. And you had a refuge at Uncle Mako’s. But I had nothing, San. Nothing. Do you remember my fifth birthday party? There I was, with my cake and everyone paying attention to me for once, when Bu stopped breathing and that was it. Party over. It wasn’t like it was the first time. Or the only time. Both of us got shoved into the background for Bu. It’s just that in your case, Uncle Mako and Uncle Wu tried to make it up to you. But nobody ever tried to make it up to me.”
He watched her now, not saying anything at all.
“Yeah, I wanted to go out on my own. I thought that if I went somewhere else, somewhere where it was just Boom-Boom and me, people would take me as I was, not Bu’s afterthought. I was a sixteen year old dumbass and Mom was absolutely right, I wasn’t old enough to handle it. But it was the first time where I felt seen. As me. As Pearl. Not a Beifong, not an airbender, not the little sister of the sick kid. And yes, I made some pretty stupid decisions, and yes, I got pregnant, and yes, when I realized it I should have gotten in contact with Granny, at least. Fuck, I could have gone to the Firelord, she would have taken care of me. But I was young and I was scared and if I am being perfectly, brutally honest here, I didn’t want to go home and have everyone pay attention to me because I fucked up, because I had done something irresponsible and stupid.” She tried a smile, but it came out all wrong. “I wanted to come home and be treated like an adult, like someone who knew her shit.” She scrubbed at her eyes again. “I was so scared, San. I had her in some buttfuck nowhere Fire Nation village with a midwife who wasn’t kind to me at all. She was horrible to me, she shamed me and she didn’t even sew up the tears I’d gotten when Emerald finally came out, didn’t even bother to clean me up. Do you know what she told me when I was laying there on the mat in her disgusting little hut, covered with blood and almost passing out from all the pain?”
San shook his head, his eyes never leaving her.
“She told me I didn’t deserve her. And I told myself that I didn’t care. I told myself that it didn’t matter what she said, that Emerald and I would be fine, that we would travel around the world together, best friends, and I’d never ignore her just because someone else was sick and needier.” She shook her head and scrubbed at her eyes. “I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing. I wouldn’t stop bleeding and my milk wasn’t coming in and she wasn’t eating, and I was so scared. But one thing I knew was that if I took her home to Mom and Dad, they’d fix it. They’d take care of her. Hadn’t they always taken care of Bu? And that’s where I went. And you know how it was, Mom put everything into motion, got a midwife and everything Emerald needed, no question at all. I knew they’d take good care of her. I knew she’d never want for anything, ever. I knew they’d love her and keep her safe. And I left, because I was still scared, and confused, and pretty fucking sure I couldn’t take care of her. And I couldn’t have taken care of her, San. Not then. It’s a vicious truth, but it’s still a truth.”
“They would have helped you,” he said, his voice quiet.
“Yes. They would have. But it would have been about her. And I would have gone back to being Invisible Pearl, shoved into the background. And I couldn’t take it. It was the whole reason I’d left home in the first place. So I left again and I tried to figure out who I was and who I wanted to be. I was still young and I didn’t know what I was doing. I have made a shit ton of mistakes, San. More than you could possibly know. I got pregnant again. Two years later.” She scoffed. “Can you believe it? Stupid Pearl, who should have known better. I was at least smart enough to take care of that immediately. I wasn’t going to do it to another child. At least I learned that much.”
“Do Mom and Dad know?”
She shook her head. “Nobody knows.”
“Pearl.” He sighed.
“By the time I felt like maybe I could make a go of it she was settled with Mom and Dad. And happy! She’s happy. She’s not invisible Emerald, shoved into the background. They love her, so much, and she loves them. I’m an irresponsible asshole but not enough to what, bust in there and demand they give her back? Like she was a pair of gloves I’d forgotten? I made my bed, San. I’ve slept in it. Every single night I sleep in it.” She ran her hands through her cropped hair. “It’s not fixable, not now. I’m not saying that out of self-pity, I’m not saying it to fucking disregard my own responsibilities. It’s not fixable. She’s not mine any longer.” She closed her eyes. “And despite what everyone thinks, I do love her. That’s why I brought her home.” She opened her eyes to look at him. “I could have left her, you know. Left her in the Fire Nation, no one the wiser. Nobody even knew I was pregnant. I could have given her to some farming couple who wanted a kid, or just fucked off from that little village with her laying there, not even with a blanket, because that fucking midwife wouldn’t even begrudge me that.”
“You wouldn’t have done that,” he said, with all the assurance that San always had.
“Why not? Look at Zhi. Fuck, look at Meili. I don’t see people slagging off Yumi for handing her over to Uncle Mako and Uncle Wu. I bring my daughter home to my parents, home to a place where she’ll always be cared for and loved, home to her family, and I’m the family criminal. Seventeen years old, the family criminal. Well, it’s something I guess. I mean, I didn’t blow up a fucking city like good old Uncle Baatar but you’ve all been judging me for years. So don’t you comment on why I never come home, San. Don’t you even dare. You’re why, you’re all why. You all can honestly just go and fuck yourselves.”
She didn’t know what she expected, but it wasn’t for San to pull her into his arms, holding her tightly. “I’m sorry, Pearlie,” he said, and the worst part of it was that she knew it was true. She knew he’d be sorry if she ever told him but she didn’t want anyone’s pity. She wanted them to recognize her sacrifice, to acknowledge it, to understand it and to stop fucking judging her. She’d underestimated him, though. “I’m sorry I never asked. I should have asked. I should have listened.”
“Oh fuck you,” she sobbed, and he just held on tighter. “I really hate you sometimes.”
“Okay,” he said, and hugged her even tighter. “That’s fair.”
And then she was half-laughing, half-sobbing. “That’s fair? What the fuck is wrong with you?”
He laughed a little then. “I don’t know. Put it down to the stick up my ass.” He rocked her back and forth, just the way Dad had always done. “Pearlie, she’s fifteen now. Soon to be sixteen. She’s old enough. She should hear this from you.”
“You think I don’t know that? I didn’t even want to have this conversation with you. I sure as fuck don’t want to have it with her.” She wiped her nose off on his tunic. That’s what he got.
“It’s not about you.”
She sighed. “I know that too. Trust me. I know.”
“Not now, it’s Granny’s birthday. But come home. You can stay with us if you don’t want to stay with Mom and Dad.”
“Oh, I am not going to stay at Mom and Dad’s, Mom and I would murder each other and that would not help.” She put her head down on his chest. “Sayuri inherited that house next door. She told me awhile ago I could stay there, there’s room for Boomster in the yard. Although I’m guessing the neighbors on the other side wouldn’t thrilled.”
“I somehow doubt Sayuri even stopped to consider that.”
“Oh, I know she didn’t.” They shared a snort over their brilliant, wholly not giving a fuck cousin.
“Just come, Pearl. I’ll talk to Mom.”
“You’re a brave man, San Beifong.”
“She likes me better.”
“Wow. Just wow. Wooooooooow.”
He chuckled but pulled back to look at her. “Please, Pearl. Not for me, not for you, not even for Mom. For Emerald. She deserves that much.”
She sighed. “I know that. But I can’t pretend that I’m going to suddenly move in and act like none of this ever happened. I get that’s the resolution other people want but it’s not the one I want. And I have no idea if it’s the one she wants, either.”
“Fair enough. But at least talk to her.”
“Vaatu’s hairy sack, you are so pushy. Like. One hundred percent pure grade Beifong pushy.”
“I’ll own that.”
“San Beifong, the I’m the oldest of my generation and I know best pushy.”
“I am the oldest of our generation. And I do know best.” He pulled back and flicked an eyebrow at her and she flicked one back in return. “Give me your word, Pearlie.”
“Fuck off.” She glared at him.
“I know you won’t break it. Give it to me.”
He’d not let up until she did, she knew that. San was the most persistent person she knew. Fucking earthbender. “I will come to Republic City.”
“And talk to my daughter.”
She sighed. “And talk to my daughter.”
“Give your word.”
“I give my word as a Beifong I will come to Republic City and talk to my daughter.” She flicked out a hand. “But that’s all, San. I’m not promising anything more than that, so do not ask me.”
“Fair enough.”
“Fine.” They stood there, the two of them, glaring at each other. Nobody who looked at them would mistake them for anything but siblings; they both had Dad’s clear green eyes, his messy cowlicked hair, his strong brows and the determined slant of his jaw, although thankfully hers had been softened somewhat. San was handsome, and she was as well; she’d never be pretty, but she’d never cared much about it. Emerald didn’t much look like her at all, looking like a Beifong mixed up with whatever Fire Nation boy had sired her, her high cheekbones and the paleness of her skin a testament to her mixed heritage. She had Dad’s green eyes, though. She’d hoped, when she’d named her daughter, that she would. “Now if you don’t mind, I need to have a fucking drink. Or ten.”
“I could also use a fucking drink. Or ten.” San let go of her then. “Can I have one with you?”
“I don’t know. Are you going to fucking push me or let me be?”
“I am the pushiest. You told me so.” He smirked at her.
“Asshole. Do what you want.” She broke away from him, walking slowly. She knew, once he’d righted the flowers she’d knocked over, he’d catch up with her.

unpopular avatar universe opinions
like i said i think katara and mako are more alike, the way their stories align. dead parent(s), the way they deal with their trauma, being left to take care of their brother, and they way the fandom treats them. while sokka and bolin are praised for how many girls they get, katara and mako are suddenly “hoes” and “for the streets”. the way some of the fandom makes fun of kataras necklace and makos scarf.
mako doesn’t need to be the funny one on season one and two because he was worried about bolin and keeping a steady job. HE HAD A MORGAGE AND A MINOR TO RAISE.
i like the bending in lok better
i don’t like zutara at all. if i had to pick an alternative relationship for kataang it would probably be taang and haru/katara. don’t attack me
while i do like the theory that suyin is sokkas daughter, i think bataar being suki and sokkas son makes more sense
i think that with the way things play out it makes more sense that sokka died young rather than dying old. we know that aang died before sokka and we know that sokka was their to help protect korra from the red lotus when she was a kid that would be like 71 years old however the way no one mentions him it would seem he died a lot earlier
i saw a tiktok that said atla would be better if sokka was the bender instead of katara and all i would like to say is i think the guy is wrong
i see a lot of gaang vs krew posts and ultimately here’s my judgement
korra vs aang: korra wins, aang is a pacifist. he would always be on defense leaving korra to be on defense, something korra is very good at
bolin vs toph. bolin would win because toph has a bunch of disadvantages a) she’s blind and b) bolin can lavabend and toph can’t. toph relies on her feet to see when she’s not grounded onto a substance she’s comfortable with or when her feet are damaged or hurt she can’t see. i think what would happen is bolin wouldnt fight toph bc she’s twelve and a lot smaller so he would try to block and put distance between him and toph and would end up in a circle of lava
asami vs suki. suki wins, suki is a trained warrior it’s unfair to asami because she was trained to be able to defend herself while suki was trained to be on offense and defense
mako vs zuko. some of y’all are about to be real mad at me but it must be said MAKO WOULD WIN because even though zuko can redirect lightning he needs to be a safe distance away and be stable or things start to go wrong as we see with his and azulas agni kai and mako really does rely on moving around when he fights and being somewhat close to his opponent
we all know mako being a cop doesn’t make sense but mako as a social worker or teacher👀
hating a character for being a cop is undoubtedly super stupid because the police was not created for the same reason as it was in america bc it’s set in asia.
funniest line in lok is “in that hunk of junk? no thanks, i’m allergic to drowning” runner up is “this is the first time i built a timer so it might run a little fast”
i truly believe that mako is at least top 5 smartest characters
mako and jinora are the best older siblings in the avatar universe
also some how mako is the mom, tired dad and supportive older sibling of their friend group
i don’t hate bataar jr. he’s quite handsome and i feel bad for him
please don’t attack me i’m sensitive

Before Anything Good pt. 2
Mako x reader (she/her pronouns)
Summary: Barely one month of living on the streets, and Mako has grown skeptical of anything good that’s offered freely to him. When the girl from the other side of town calls him stinky and demands he take a shower, he might just be right about his newfound cynicism.
Word count: 2.2k
Warnings: brief implied abusive relationship, language, dialogue heavy, Bolin being comedy relief, this is literally just filler goofiness lol
A/N: New game, drink water every time anyone is called stinky hehe I was going to update this on the weekend but got too excited! also can we get an F for my keyboard pls it doesn’t want to cooperate anymore,, anyway pls let me know if there are any errors!

Tumblr media
After exchanging transactions and names, the three sat on a bench outside with a hefty bag of baked goods. Bolin bounced in his seat as he patiently waited for the girl, who introduced herself as Yn, to pass him his bread before eating her own. She reached into the bag with the napkin, making sure to hand over one of the bigger pieces. Grabbing at it with greedy hands and an appetite to match, he immediately scarfed down the brioche, but not before he said his thanks. He sighed in delight as the fluffiness of it melted on his tongue. “So good!!”
Mako found himself smiling at Bolin’s infectious grin. “S’that so? Want a bite of mine?” He angled his spongy bread towards the younger one, who happily chomped on it. He returned his gaze forward as he continued to chew on his bread, the treat staving off some of the hunger.
Yn giggled at the interaction, wanting to join the fun, and tugged on Mako’s sleeve. “Want a bite of mine?” Before Mako had a chance to respond, she had already shoved her bread into his mouth once he had turned towards her. After breaking the piece off, she lectured, “You should eat more! These will go bad if you don’t finish them! It’ll be a waste.” She ignored Mako’s flushed face, assuming he just needed water, and passed him his cup.
Once he cleared his throat, Mako choked out, "Didn’t you ever consider the germs! You could be sick!”
“I’m not sick!” She cried defensively. “If I cared about your germs, I wouldn’t have offered you any of my bread!”
“Did you think that I might care about germs?!”
“I- Well, I-,” she immediately paused, her cheeks flushing as she looked down sheepishly, “-did not think about that. Sorry?” She looked back at him, the fear of losing her newly made friend reflecting in her expression.
“That’s okay! Mako’s just shy with girls,” Bolin helpfully announced. “Like when that one girl who lived across the street tried to offer some fruit and Mako just threw them-”
“You can eat the rest,” Mako blankly offers, the remaining bread shoved in Bolin’s mouth. At Yn’s gaping mouth, Mako grabs the wrist holding her bread before guiding the food into her mouth. “You should, too.” A playful grin itches the corners of his mouth as he tries to keep a straight face. "It's not good to waste your food." He reaches into the bag to grab a different type of bread as if nothing happened and proceeds to chew on it.
“Thaz nawht neigs!”
At her muffled yelling, Mako’s eyes glint playfully. “What’s that? I smell really good?” She shoved him away the moment he tried to lean closer to her.
Once she swallowed, she reprimanded Mako’s behavior, claiming it’s not good to interrupt people talking.
Mako shrugged, leaning against the wall. “Not really. When you have a brother, it’s okay to be mean.”
Her eyes narrowed, taking in his words. “Then, what about a sister? Would you be mean to her too?”
He takes a moment to ponder. It was nice forgetting that he was an orphan and just enjoying food in the company of another. But he thinks back to the days he'd chase Bolin around the house and wonders if he'd also chase Yn around if she'd been there. After all, a friend wouldn't be too different from a sibling, right?
“I think it’d be okay to be mean to them, too.” Yn’s head nodded approvingly at the answer, humming appreciatively that there was no special treatment between siblings. “Not sure, though. I never really thought about it until now.”
“What about you, Yn? Do you have a brother or sister?” Bolin chimed in, now on his second bread.
“None! But I’d like a sister or brother sometime! I think it’s neat to have a friend like that around all the time.”
“Yeah, you can think of it like that. Or it’s someone annoying you all the time.” With another shrug, Mako pops the rest of the bread in his mouth and dusts the crumbs off his hands.
Bolin clears his throat, climbs onto his knees, and holds Mako by the shoulders to steady himself before burping in his face. The immediate cringe his brother wears is enough to satisfy him, a triumphant grin settling on his face. “Or someone you can annoy all the time!”
Yn’s bark of laughter suddenly ends when suddenly the same cringe on Mako embraces her face. “Oh, you two are really stink-” but the other two don’t hear her finish her sentence as someone shouts her name over the stomping of ostrich horses in front of them.
The lady towering over Yn from her seat inside the carriage looks frustrated, worried, and tired all at once. She hugs the girl the instant she exits the carriage, her eyes clenching softly in relief before she reopens them to look her form over. Making sure there aren’t any visible signs of dirt or scratches, she sighs. “Sweetie, why did you leave my side? You’re lucky I found you before anything happened!”
Yn puffs her chest and sits up straighter. The moment the word “mother” had left her mouth, Mako suddenly felt like he shouldn’t have been here, shouldn’t have gone for the bread, should be leaving, should be running. He stiffens when he makes eye contact with her mom, her eyes scanning their tattered clothes and thin coating of dust, settling on the scarf wrapped around Mako's neck with some form of recognition and pity. The pity. This was the exact moment he hated experiencing when parents realized their kids were around them, the orphans. Mako makes an effort to hold back a scoff, suddenly remembering how it wasn’t proper social etiquette to be rude to those related to the one who have shown you kindness.
“Mako, can we?” He turns to see Bolin holding his hands together in plea and lips pouting.
"Uh..." Shit, he was not listening. "I don't know, Bo…"
“Please, I insist. Any friend of Yn is welcome to have dinner with us anytime.” The look in her eyes was hesitant compared to the shakey upward turn of her mouth. “I won’t make two orphans pay, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
Although they were the same words spoken to him earlier that day, they didn’t feel as sweet coming from the lady than it did from her daughter. Why did she have to mention they were orphans? Did she know them? their parents? the culprit?
“Mako,” Bolin whispers. Tugging his sleeve close enough so that the other two wouldn’t hear, he continues whispering. “House. Stuff. Steal?” Mako’s face remained neutral, but Bolin’s idea did strike a chord… Maybe they had a collection? They wouldn’t notice a thing or two from it missing… Mako assumed position by crossing his arms and making an indecisive face, hand resting on his chin to pronounce the effect. “It’s free dinner! Just this once, please?” With his acting turned up by a notch, Bolin slings himself onto Mako’s shoulders with the biggest puppy eyes he could muster.
“Well… I could never say no to free food,” Mako returns stiffly. Gee, why couldn’t they just be natural. Even Bolin’s pout turned into a grimace.
“Then let’s go now!” With no time for them to worry about how bad their acting was, the two of them were suddenly seated in the carriage on the opposite side from Yn and her mom. Yn bounced in her seat and swung her legs, her head tilting from side to side as if she was picking and choosing from a jar of questions to ask them, but only held back because of her mother being in the same space.
The brothers shifted their eyes around the cart, not wanting to make eye contact at her mom, but not quite wanting to look at Yn either. Instead, Mako fiddled with the ends of his scarf while Bolin asked for another piece of bread. Smart, at least he wouldn’t be asked to talk if he was eating.
“Mother?” Yn’s tongue poked against the inside of her cheek, hesitant on whether she should ask something or not. At her mother’s inquiry, she continued, “Is this what kidnapping looks like?”
Everyone turned to the sound of Bolin’s choking, who could barely hold the bottle of water being handed to him by Yn’s mother while Mako slapped his back harshly until he calmed down. “K-ki-kid- you’re kidnapping us?” He stared at the water and bread questionably. “Are these poisoned?! Am I going to… going to… melt… from the inside?” The tears in the corner of his widened eyes began to roll down at the thought of a painful death and he turned to Mako, barely comprehensible. “I told you! We shou-shouldn’t have come!”
“You’re the one who wanted to go!”
“You’re the one who let us go!” Great. Now he was sobbing.
Exasperated, Mako groans. “Fine! If it makes you feel better-” he takes a large swig from the same bottle Bolin drank from earlier, “-now we’ll both melt from the inside!” Once Bolin’s sobs calmed down, he quickly added, “Better?” Bolin’s nod of approval stopped at the sound of Yn’s laughter on the other side, her mom simply covering her mouth with a little twinkle in her eyes.
“I wanna melt from the inside, too!” Yn plucked the bottle from Mako’s hands before chugging the rest, saying something about how poisoned water tasted better than regular water.
“You’re free to leave anytime after dinner, by the way. We’ll even arrange a carriage to take you back,” Yn’s mother offered.
Mako nodded slowly, the look in her eyes now seeming more genuine than it had outside the carriage. “Thank you. We’d really like that.”
The rocking of the carriage and the stomping of the ostrich horses filled the silence afterwards. With nothing to do and the presence of her mother making her hold her tongue, Yn studied the two brothers’ features. She wasn’t sure of what the definition of pretty for boys was, but she was sure these two were it.
Bolin was on the cuter side with his stubby nose helping his thick eyebrows emphasize his expressions, chubby cheeks filling like chimp-monkeys, and bright emerald eyes practically glowing as if untouched. Mako, on the other hand, had a more slender nose, the arch of his eyebrows curving naturally just before abruptly being pulled up to a mountain peak and dragging downwards on the thicker end, his cheeks close to hollowing out from lack of food, and golden eyes tinted and narrowed in suspicion every now and then. The apples of both their cheeks an angry pink and peeling from being sunburnt, paling in comparison to the deep red and soft cotton of Mako’s scarf.
That couldn't have felt nice if they just left it alone… She sighed and started folding the empty bag of bread, wondering if her mother had any mud masks she could spare at home.
--
“And that’s how you turn off the sink!” Yn finished her explanation to the boys with a proud face, the bathroom lights adding just another bright layer to her eyes.
“We know how to use the bathroom...”
“Then get to brushing your teeth! Your breath-”
“Stinks. We know.”
Yn’s grin widens at Mako’s admittance, skipping out of the bathroom to help her mom prep for dinner. The dinner prep was simple since neither brothers had any special dietary needs or restrictions. The sound of the door unlocking was enough to stop her from turning on the stove to cook the chopped ingredients. Running to the door, she greeted her father with a slight bow and offered to take his coat and hat back to his room.
Just as she exited her father’s room, she heard her name from Mako’s distressed call. “Can you get us towels? And some clothes?” His head was sticking out from the door and his damp hair clung to the sides of his face as he looked around frantically.
“Oh! Sorry, how could I forget? Just wait a bit!” She’s about to turn the corner into the kitchen to ask her mother about the washed clothes, stopping when she hears the hushed whispers that could only belong to her parents.
“No, those two kids! They’re San and Naoki’s kids!”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“Spirits, woman, do I have to spell everything for you? Did you see the damage of their house? They must have gotten some money from selling stuff. Money that they’re hiding.”
“They’re just kids. When are you going to stop pulling this stunt?”
“I’ll stop when I stop. Now, where have you been seeing them hang around?”
A heavy air of silence hangs around the area, and Yn nearly looks around the wall before her eyes widened at the familiar sound of a harsh clap thundering off the walls of the kitchen. Her hands flew to cover her mouth to repress her gasp. With shaky steps, she was barely able to turn around without tripping on her feet, the sound of her heartbeat pounding in her ears and blocking off the rest of their conversation as she made her way back to the bathroom.

A/n: I did not need 1.7k words before getting to this point in the story but I couldn’t help it LOL this part was split once again :”) also some pieces of dialogue are based on conversations in real life and I thought it fitted the three of them nicely as kids! kinda surprised myself this chapter because i always cringe at what i write but this was kinda cute lol Let me know what you thought of this chapter!!
