Concept art for an unused enemy design for Super Mario RPG, shared by the game’s Monster Character Design Supervisor, Kazuyuki Kurashima.
Concept materials reveal that this enemy was intended to belong to a faction of enemies that included Octolot, Remo Con and Jester. Together, they would have been called the "Puzzling Grunts" and have been subservient to Jinx. In the finished game, the group has been completely split up, with Jinx becoming a non-antagonist boss, Octolot being a Forest Maze enemy, Remo Con and Jester becoming Booster Tower enemies, and the one in the artwork being scrapped.

This is a weird enemy. Maybe not so weird in principle, but just weird in the sense where I can’t help but wonder what the design process behind these things was.
So... lemme just see if I’ve got this straight. This is an octopus enemy found in the Forest Maze. You know, the forest. Where you find octopuses. They’ve got two horns and yellow cheeto tentacles, but also two tentacles that serve as arms. They’re also flying enemies, not because they can fly, but because they’re holding onto two disembodied Koopa shells. With bat wings.
Y’know what? Sure. I’ve seen weirder.
According to their Psychopath Thought, Octovader is a “part-time typist”! I’m guessing this is because of their many arms. That is admittedly pretty funny, Mario RPG, but I’ve still got my eye on you...
Okay another custom hat I did that came out much better! I am going to be selling the design as a t-shirt too as per demand of IRL peeps hehe! Also got another commission request for this design!
I love painting on hats <3
Also, his smile was so cute that I couldn’t crop him out like I said I would.
With Octolot, I tried to building the model to meet design features rather than just going as low-poly as possible and then adding details in via textures. This is most noticeable around the eyes and brow when seen from various angles. By the way, the shape of the markings is somewhat inspired by some of the squirrel villagers in Animal Crossing.
hello may i steal the idea about the Lanceloct where Oct gets big and starts a thing with Lance and then Jed cannot do anything bc he is small and helpless i love it so much (and after weeks of them dating and Jed bein all sad somehow Jed gets big and rushes towards Octavius and Oct is having a fight with Lance and after Lance leaves Jed just comforts his friend and agdhhdjjsjd im probably gonna make fanart of thjs later)
DO IT!!! GET ALL THE SAD AND SALTY JED YOU WANT!!!! XD
But please make the happy jedtavius ending I’M BEGGING YOU!
Oh boy, It’s a bonus recolor for Octolot! The classic Octorok from The Legend of Zelda looks a bit like Octolot, not to mention the similar name, so I went ahead and made a texture for it. I considered changing the shells to be green, but they stood out too much and just looked like Koopa shells, so I left them red. This particular design comes from Four Swords and The Minish Cap. I also had planned a recolor based on Splatoon, but it didn’t turn out so well. Maybe one day I’ll make another recolor based on the other Octorok designs, like the one in Ocarina of Time.

Another enemy from Super Mario RPG joins the Subspace Army! This strange, magical octopus monster is another one of my favorites. In fact, I have been wanting to model this guy since as far back as 2011, but back then I was too intimidated by its organic shapes to even try. Octolot and Octovader can use an impressive amount of elemental magic, which would make them dangerous enemies in Subspace Emissary. I can't help but imagine them behaving like Skuttler Mages in Smash Run.
The proportions of the model are based very closely on the sprite, though I made some changes to the design of the eyes and the position of the legs. The design of the legs are inspired by the Octolings of Splatoon, though I did not go so far as to add suction cups. The mouth has a lot of polygons so that it doesn't look too bad when stretched large amounts. I should probably mention that the mouth here is stretched to twice its normal height.
With the shells on its staffs, I tried to make their contents and origin seem enigmatic. Besides the obvious bat wings, the shell looks like Buzzy Beetle shell, but has cracks running through it that form a Koopa Troopa shell pattern. If you look on the underside, you'll also see six leg holes. And yes, there are little octopus mouths inside the shells. By the way, the bat wings are just flat renders of Kebako's wing, which in turn comes from Meta Knight.
