A Doomed Pretenders Project: An Introduction

Hi!

I've always been slightly hesitant with starting a directly War of the Roses project (despite the excellent ranges of miniatures and example projects to draw inspiration from), partly because I'm never quite sure where to begin with one, and what to use as a 'hook'! I tend to get a bit indecisive over which factions, liveries and time periods to choose. I kept finding myself gravitating towards the pretenders and rebellions in the early Tudor period instead. The potential narrative tropes that can be applied there, like hidden princes and secret conspiracies which lend themselves really well to alternate-history scenarios and definitely captured the imagination!

Using that premise as a base, I've decided to (mostly) split this into three different periods (to correspond to three different pretenders):

- Lambert Simnel, as Edward VI, with the Stoke Field rebellion in 1487

- Perkin Warbeck as Richard IV with his assorted attempts on the throne through the 1490s

- Richard de La Pole, also as Richard IV, with his planned invasions of England under Louis XII and Francis I

This would let me have a fairly wide set of options for figures and conversions to cover the early Tudor period, and a range of different factions I could use to represent the actual (or hypothetical in alternate history scenarios) support given to each of the pretenders over the roughly 40 year period until Pavia!

For a start, I decided to refurb the miniature I painted up to represent Perkin Warbeck, the middlest pretender, back in 2019 as part of my Burgundian project on the Lead Adventure Forum. I wasn't too happy with his old head, so I swapped that out for a new one for the new project!

I've based Perkin Warbeck on this (near) contemporary sketch of him (which happens to look like that one Handsome Superman image), combined with the portraits we have of Edward IV, Richard III and Henry VII:

I added little white rose patterns onto his outfit to imply his Yorkist claims, where I thought that if Warbeck was insecure about people believing his claimed identity he would try to compensate by putting Yorkist symbolism all over himself to help convince people. Another part of starting this project was to have an excuse to paint up some of the Perry WotR Irish range! I really like the figures but didn't really have anywhere to slot them in before, so this seemed like a nice justification! All three pretenders had at least some connection to the Fitzgeralds of either Kildare or Desmond, and even if only Lambert Simnel had any substantial support, it's not too outlandish for either Perkin Warbeck or the de la Pole brothers to field an Irish contingent in an alternate history scenario!

The Editor and the Policeman

"The editor and the policeman", Andrew Edwards first story for Daily Science Fiction, posits an interesting and unique conjecture which like so many interesting and unique conjectures seems obvious once posited.

Thus. Commissioner Gordon and Perry White have been on to their respective superheroes’ secret identities for a very long time. Obviously. They'd have had to be total incompetents to have not caught on. So they take care of their assets and cover for them and worry about their mental health and keep their alter egos under observation. Just in case.

The story is nicely done. The author relating to the audience what has transpired, and the superheros' impact on the lives of their two guardians, as they discuss matters in their annual meeting. Exposition, yes, but the conversation flows nicely, with a nice touch at the end about a recipe.

Ban Summers is the homebrewed lo-fi indie project of Edward Perry (formerly The Boy I Used To Be). After being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and M.E., chronic illness led to him concentrating on recording many songs in his bedroom in Portsmouth using just his laptop, guitar, microphone and occasionally an amp.

Ban Summers music shares his experience of being disabled in modern Britain, with songs such as Day In/Day Out revealing the day to day of his life with the chorus including the line “I made plans but my body made other plans”.

His home recordings have culminated in debut album Ban Summers (2019), released on cassette and zine with Brutalist Records, and Bean Summers (2022), an album and coffee in collaboration with Low Tide Coffee Co. Just six months on he returned with the scuzzy yet dreamy Drifting and then Couldn’t Give A, which includes voice clips from fans, friends and family, with a brand new album completed and to be released soon.

Edward also presents Dis, a monthly radio show playing fellow disabled artists on Unmade Radio, which has been running for over two years.

Liberal candidates won only three seats in Monday's provincial election on Prince Edward Island, but that will be enough to replace the Green Party as the province's official opposition.

Liberal Leader Sharon Cameron was not among the winning candidates and will not have a seat in the legislature. In a speech late Monday night, however, she said she still plans to hold the government accountable.

"I'm still going to be a pain in the ass, and there's a pain in the ass somewhere, but I will be a pain in the ass." Cameron said she is confident the three Liberal MLAs will hold King's "feet to the fire," especially when it comes.

"We better make them pay attention; we'll help our opposition become much stronger as we move toward 2027." The Liberals finished third in the popular vote at about 17 percent, compared to the Greens. The Liberals earned 29 percent of the popular vote in the 2019 election, while the Greens had 30 percent.

"The thing that I'm most grateful for is that we're back," Cameron said. "It's fair to say this is not the night we hoped for when the campaign began, but going into this election, we all knew it was going to."

Keeping their seats were Liberals Hal Perry in District 27 (Tignish-Palmer) and Gord McNeilly in District 14 (Charlottetown-West Royalty). McNeilly said his feelings about the results were mixed, "but I know one thing: The people of Prince Edward Island are not as happy as these results would seem to the doors. There's a lot of pain out there. So I don't really know how any of us can really celebrate.

McNeilly pledged to do whatever it takes to hold the PC government to account as a member of the Official Opposition, citing health care and affordability as "crushing" issues in his district.

"We know what we have to do, so we're excited to be there with Hal Perry and Rob Henderson; they taught me a lot, and without them, I don't have a chance tonight to work together to do whatever we can for our districts, and now for Prince Edward Island."

McNeilly said he and the other two sitting MLAs will need to see what happens with the party's leadership now that Cameron didn't win her seat.

Before the campaign began on March 6, Cameron ran against Green Party Leader Peter Bevan-Baker in District 17: New Haven-Rocky Point finished a distant third behind Bevan-Baker and PC candidate Donalda Docherty.

The Liberals had four seats when the election was called by PC Leader Dennis King, who will now have a second term in government. The Liberals lost District 24: Evangeline-Miscouche, held by longtime MLA Sonny Gallant, to PC candidate Gilles Arsenault. Gallant did not reoffer due to health reasons. The Liberal candidate who replaced him in the district, Pat MacLellan, finished second.

2022 marks the 140th birthday of Edward Hopper. On this episode, we learned about about the events celebrating this extraordinary artist, who was born in Nyack, NY.

Kathie Bennewitz, executive director of the Edward Hopper House, joined host Clare Sheridan to discuss the new exhibition at Hopper House, "Edward Hopper‘s Boyhood on the Hudson River and Emerging Artistic Vision," on view now through March 26, 2023; a new documentary about Hopper, "Hopper, An American Love Story" that was screened on November 16, 2022, at Rivertown Film; and the Whitney Museum’s new exhibition "Edward Hopper’s New York."

About our guest: Kathleen Motes Bennewitz, executive director of the Edward Hopper House, has extensive experience with Connecticut museums and nonprofits and has won several awards, including the Connecticut League of History Organizations Award of Merit in 2019 and 2020 and the Leadership in History Award, the most prestigious national award given by the American Association of State and Local History (AASLH), in 2017. She holds degrees in art history from Princeton University and the University of Delaware. After curatorial positions at the Amon Carter Museum and Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, and in education at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, she served as director of exhibitions and programs at the Greenwich Historical Society (the historic site of the Cos Cob art colony) and Fairfield Museum and History Center. She has curated exhibits on American art and artists over her career and in Connecticut at the Lockwood-Matthews Mansion Museum, Norwalk Historical Society, Westport Historical Society, Westport Library, and Westport Public Art Collections. She and her husband, Scott, have twin adult daughters.

About the Hopper House exhibition: Curated by Carole Perry and Kathleen Motes Bennewitz, with Lynne Z. Bassett, this new exhibition, on view through March 26, 2023, showcases childhood drawings by the artist on loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art and works from private collections, including the Arthayer R. Sanborn Hopper Collection Trust, alongside Hopper’s school notebooks and artmaking materials and artworks by family members from the Museum’s Sanborn-Hopper Family Archive.
