Best Friends: Arrow 1x19 Review (Unfinished Business)
“Unfinished Business” takes a hard look at Oliver’s friendships with Tommy and Diggle, as one relationship crumbles and the other finds stronger footing – after a few missteps.
Prepare yourselves. I might write about the flashbacks this week because Shado provided an information download which was sorely needed.
Let’s dig in…
Oliver and Tommy
Oliver revealed his true identity to Tommy three episodes ago and it feels like their friendship has been a bomb waiting to explode ever since. A girl who partied at Verdant dies from a Vertigo overdose, which puts Quentin hot on Tommy’s trail and Oliver hot on The Count’s. This poor girl sadly is the catalyst for the explosion between Tommy and Oliver we’ve been waiting for.
Tumblr media
The “evidence” that convinces Quentin Tommy is dealing Vertigo isn’t exactly irrefutable. The girl texted Tommy before she died, which Tommy easily explains because he receives texts from hundreds of people every night trying to get into the club. Her request for a “hook up” is not for Vertigo as Quentin believes.
The second piece of evidence raises the eyebrows, but Tommy has an explanation – albeit a shady one. There is ten thousand dollars missing from Verdant’s operating budget. Quentin believes Tommy used it to buy Vertigo, but he used it to bribe the zoning commissioner into skipping their inspection. Bribery isn’t great, but it’s a far lesser crime than dealing a deadly drug. L*urel could drive a truck through all that room for reasonable doubt.
Tumblr media
This episode is another Merlance highpoint. L*urel believed in Tommy one hundred percent and he called her baby. Just leave me to my grave to die a happy woman.
Tumblr media
After Tommy refuses Quentin entry into Verdant without a warrant, the detective comes back with one and it leads to a heart stopping moment. He wants to specifically look at the sub level not listed on the inspection’s floor plans. Ever the dutiful detective, Lance pulled the county records and knows it exists.
Tumblr media
In my mind, I know this is not the way Oliver’s vigilante hideaway is getting discovered, but the panic in Oliver’s eyes always sends me to Stressville USA. Especially when he types the code!!! He’s shooting those panicked looks at Tommy who is as cool as a cucumber.
Quentin enters the The Hood's bunker and there’s no bunker! How Tommy moved all that equipment and replaced it with bottles of booze I will never understand. We simply have to believe in the magic of television y’all. Tommy is not going to rat Oliver out and he quite literally saves his ass.
Something Oliver should have known, but his lack of faith in Tommy is evident. It’s something Tommy cannot tolerate, not after everything that’s happened between them. He cannot believe Oliver thought he was dealing drugs out of the club.
Oliver doesn’t understand why Tommy wasn’t honest about the bribe. Oliver loses me right off the bat. Team Tommy all the way. Let’s list out the things you have not told Tommy, Oliver and we’ll see who has the longer list. YOU HID YOUR SECRET SUPERHERO LAIR IN THE CLUB YOU OPENED WITH TOMMY AND NEVER TOLD HIM ABOUT IT. A bribe is chump change in comparison to that lie.
Tumblr media
Tommy: Let me ask you a question, pal. What have I done in the last six months since you’ve been home that would lead you to believe that I would sell drugs?
Oliver:  In the last six months? Nothing. But before I left you played hard. You played with bad people who were into bad stuff.
Tommy: So, did you Oliver. But I changed just like you did. Now you put arrows in people who do bad things.
Oliver gets owned in this argument, because Tommy is right. He refuses to see that Tommy has truly changed, but still expects Tommy to understand he has.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Oliver’s changes are a tougher pill to swallow. Tommy cannot understand how Oliver can kill people so easily and, quite frankly, wasn’t one hundred percent sure he wouldn’t end up with an arrow in him if he told Oliver about the bribe.
Is this insane for Tommy to be wondering? No, I don’t think so. We know Oliver doesn’t kill easily. We know he’s fighting a nightly war and there is a steep cost to this mission.
However, Oliver has not opened up to Tommy about what happened the five years he was away and he’s not Mr. Joe Here’s What I’m Thinking about being The Hood today. Killing is something Tommy cannot understand, but Oliver expects him to accept it with little to no explanation. Then he has the nerve not to trust Tommy? Seriously?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: @htbthomas
What Tommy thinks of him is a verbal gut punch to Oliver, but he deserved it. Unfortunately, this fight is not one Oliver can fix with a simple apology. Tommy has reached his limit and who can blame him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tommy: This club is important to me, but to you it’s just a front. You want me to keep your secret, help you be this thing you’ve become, but you refuse to see me for what I’ve become. I’ve got just a bit too much self-respect for that. I quit.
Tumblr media
BOOM. YASSS MY SON!!! Way to stand up for yourself Thomas. I was so proud of him telling Oliver where to stick it.
Tommy: I’d prefer we skip the I-told-you-so’s, but the nightclub wasn’t really working out. I guess I need something more boring, stable… I guess what I’m saying is - I need a job.
Tumblr media
TOMMY WHAT ARE YOU DOING??!!! WORST. DECISION. EVER.
Tommy is back in the arms of the Big Bad Malcom Merlyn. For one brief shining moment, Tommy stood tall on the moral high ground, but not five seconds later comes plummeting back down to work with the sludge of the earth.
Tumblr media
Source: @fogsblue
Tommy has every right to be pissed at Oliver, but his father is not the answer. That man is a hellscape. Whatever positive changes Tommy has made he is in real danger of a serious backslide. Now that Tommy is on the outs with Oliver, Merlyn can lead his son right to his very own villain origin story. And Tommy may lose sight of who he really is.
Oliver and Diggle (Felicity)
Oliver is firing on all cylinders tonight with his bros. After accusing his best friend of being a drug dealer, Oliver pitches a hissy fit over Diggle not being available the second he’s needed.
John is distracted because he’s consumed with avenging his brother’s death and killing Deadshot. While Oliver was trying to stop a hostage situation with a man high on Vertigo, Diggle was handing over information on Deadshot to a friend from ARGUS.
Tumblr media
Hello Lyla! This is her very first Arrow appearance. These two had more chemistry in this single scene than any scene with Diggle and Carly.  I don’t know what obsession this show has about siblings dating the same people, but it’s enough already. I have to deal with this crap on The Vampire Diaries.
Oliver is furious Diggle ignored Felicity’s phone call. John hilariously tells Oliver not to get his panties in a twist. He’s completely fine. Oliver pretty much puts his hands on his hips and says, “You couldn’t have known that!” They sound like an old married couple.
John is a little put out Oliver is not more understanding. He thought Oliver would understand his vendetta against Deadshot, since Oliver is walking around with a whole damn list of names from his father! But that’s right. It’s a mission. Not a vendetta. Where’s Helena? We need her around if we’re debating this again.
Tumblr media
Diggle chooses to be more specific and reminds Oliver The Count almost killed Thea, so his fervor over getting this drug and criminal off the streets may be a little personal too. Oliver says nothing because it’s true.
Diggle: I can’t move on with my life knowing that he’s still out there. I thought if anybody got that it’d be you.
Oliver doesn’t say anything here either because that’s true too. #TeamDiggle.
Felicity and Oliver discover there’s a new antipsychotic drug added to Vertigo, which makes Oliver believe The Count didn’t break out of the asylum like he thought. Maybe he faked his escape like he faked the crazy.
Close, but no. The Count really is three paper plates short of a picnic. It’s his DOCTOR and a very burly orderly who are manufacturing Vertigo. Honestly, I did not see that one coming.
Tumblr media
It’s a Vertigo episode, so Oliver is getting drugged, but this time Diggle does show up to save him. He takes out the horse sized orderly, and Oliver kills the doctor with three arrows. It’s not often The Hood requires more than one to get the job done, but his vision was a bit wonky, so he used three just to be on the safe side.
Both the orderly and the doctor had to die because they knew Oliver Queen was The Hood. Those are the rules. The interesting choice Oliver made was not to kill the Count, who is babbling like a toddler on a telephone.
Arrow uses this moment to draw a very important distinction between Diggle and Tommy. After the boys return home, Oliver wants to know if Diggle is ok. He’s the killer in this family, not John.
Diggle: I’ve killed before Oliver. It’s just been a while.
There is no judgment from either man. It’s just quiet acknowledgement that killing is necessary sometimes. But that doesn’t make it easy.
Tommy’s anger towards Oliver makes him blind to his humanity. Oliver is not a psychopath. He does not kill for the enjoyment of it. He is doing what is necessary to save the city from some really bad people. Tommy takes it too far believing killing is easy for Oliver. He’s furious Oliver doesn’t see the change in him, but the truth is Tommy doesn’t see the change in Oliver either.
This is something Oliver never had to explain to Diggle. John does see the change in Oliver. He stood by quietly as Oliver grappled with killing The Count. Diggle didn’t make any speeches. He simply left space for Oliver to make that decision on his own.
If Oliver chose to kill The Count, John would’ve understood that choice as well. He wouldn’t call him a murderer. John encourages Oliver to make different choices, but he also meets Oliver where he’s at. Maybe Oliver would open up more to Tommy if he offered less judgment like John Diggle.
Diggle is curious why Oliver didn’t kill The Count and he tells him the truth. There just didn’t seem to be a point with the Count chained up and lost to madness.
There are two things Oliver is not saying. He was convinced earlier in the episode that he made the wrong decision allowing The Count to live and was just a teensy bit mad.
Tumblr media
Source: @lucyyh
But he couldn’t fire the arrow in the end.
Felicity’s gentle reassurance that locking The Count up was the right call hit her intended mark. If killing is truly a last resort, then Oliver has to utilize other methods of dealing with criminals. Oliver has shown more restraint ever since Felicity joined the team. He hasn’t stopped killing, but he does listen to her.
Tumblr media
Source: @lucyyh
The second is Oliver believes killing an unarmed man in that condition would be wrong – like stabbing someone in the back. He’s not a threat in that condition and The Count truly didn’t have anything to do with the Vertigo being unleashed on the city again. There are rules to war and those rules keep his humanity intact.
John Diggle has Oliver’s back, so in return Oliver will have his and is making Deadshot a top priority. Couldn’t we have just done that from the beginning and skipped their couples fight?
Neither Oliver or Tommy can see the other for who they truly are. Yet, people Oliver met barely a year ago have more faith in him than his childhood best friend and vice versus. Sometimes history stops us from allowing change in the people we love.
You can see why Oliver is keeping his identity secret from his family and L*urel. It's not just about their safety. He's afraid they will all react like Tommy.
But there's no baggage with Diggle and Felicity, so Oliver has a clean slate. They can see Oliver for who he truly is. It's becoming clearer with every episode that Diggle (and Felicity) are Oliver's best friends.
Shado
Like Felicity, Shado is a breath of fresh air to Team Island. She is beautiful, kicks ass and knows a thing or two about a bow. Oliver has been helpless majority of the time. I am not expecting him to become a super secret agent man like Slade Wilson in a couple of months, but he does need to perform a function on this team other than dead weight.
Tumblr media
Shado takes it upon herself to teach Oliver how to shoot, but she does not start with the bow. She begins by telling Oliver to slap a bowl of water. Like the idiotic American he is, Oliver is annoyed, but doesn’t really have anything better to do, so he slaps the water in the bowl. By episode end, his hand is strong enough to pull the bow string. This woman accomplished more in a day than Slade Wilson did in months.
Tumblr media
She also provides some much-needed Yao Fei backstory. He was general in the People’s Liberation Army (the Chinese communist army).  The military committed a massacre and chose Yao Fei to take the blame. They sent him to Lian Yu for the rest of his life. Fryers knows this and wants Yao Fei to take the fall for whatever he’s going to do.
And we thought The Count was nuts.
Tumblr media
Source: thearrowgifs
As for Shado, she spent years searching for her father. A man told her he knew where Yao Fei was, but kidnapped her instead and brought her to Lian Yu as leverage over Yao Fei. It took nineteen episodes to get that information. Yeesh.
Shado: I’m worried, this island, what he must have had to do to survive. That it changed him.
If this sounds ominous it’s supposed to. Not all change is good. That’s true for all of us - even Oliver Queen.
Stray Thoughts
“You could’ve just said he was nuts.” I like sassy Quentin.
Maybe it’s my whole Buffy history, but Shado and Slade sparring felt very sexually charged.
Budget cuts and the CAMERAS are the first to go in jail?!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This will always be one of Diggle's best lines.
TOMMY HAS FELICITY’S PHONE NUMBER. Oh, the fics this detail launched.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What did we ever do in the bunker without this perfect gumdrop of a human being?
“What’s happening now isn’t your fault.” Felicity should’ve tattooed this on Oliver’s arm. It would save a whole lot of time.
“My mom does yoga.” Ollie is just so… Ollie.
1141 is the passcode to the bunker. The Green Arrow was created November 1941 (11/41).

Sam being a whole ass creeper but so smooth.
Please let me know what you think <3
🍬🍬🍬
Your keys jingle as a car skims by on the wet road, streetlights blurring in the hangover of the last rain. You shove the keys in the slot and wiggle, jamming against the stubborn lock. You hear a step and a shadoe casts beneath the yellow haze of the urban hue.
You rip the key out and fumble to grip the small can dangling from the keyring and aim it at the stranger. You squeal as he catches your hand and holds it above you, directing the spray away from him. You try to pull away but they hold you unbendingly.
"Candy, it's me," the warm voice is familiar but does little to calm your nerves, "hey, hey," he lets you go and shields himself with open hands as you swing at him, "it's me. Sam."
"Sammy?" You stop and lower your keys as you clutch the strap of your purse across your shoulder, "the fuck?"
"I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have come but… it just seems like there's never a good time for us to chat anymore–"
"Sam, this is not okay," you back away from him, "how do you know where to find me? Jesus Christ, book a slot, don't just show up at my place and–" you unzip your purse shakily and fish around for your phone, "don't," you warn as he tries to come closer, "I'm calling the cops."
"Don't do that, sugar," he pleads, "it won't do you any good– what I mean is I'm not here to hurt you."
"Then why the hell are you here?" You unlock your phone and he sighs.
"Fine," he crosses his arms, let's wait for the police," he calmly back up and leans against the brick. Go inside and get warm, I'll be here."
You frown in confusion and dial anyways. You point your keys at him and move cautiously to the door. You quickly shove the key in and twist it, pushing inside and falling back against the wood to slam the door. There's no resistance from the other side as you turn the latch back into place.
You tell the operator your address when they pick up, and wait, watching through the peephole. Finally you see the blue and red flash and hear the whoop of the single siren. The cruiser stops by the curb and the officers get out.
"You call?" The first officer's voice is muffled behind the wood.
"Nah, she's inside," Sam approaches the officer and they shake hands as if they know each other.
"She a problem? Thought you were off duty."
"You know Falcon's always on the hunt but nope, it's just a misunderstanding–"
You open the door and poke your head out, "I called. I…" you step out and take a breath, "look, he just showed up and I don't know him."
"Sure she doesn't," Sam says, "you guys know me," he pulls out his phone, "I got the chat right here, okay?"
He lights up his screen and your chest drops. What the fuck, he can't mean–
The officers laugh as they read the bubbled messages and you rush forward to hide it behind your hand, "Sam!"
"Mystery solved, little spat," the second officer chuckles, "sorry about that Wilson."
"Not at all," Sam grins and gives a half-salute.
The officers get back in there car and you swallow down your fear, "Sam, what do you want?"
"Just a live show, sugar," he says as he smiles and waves at the cruiser, "I got your tip and everything."

Unit Teambuilding - Challenger (Alt) Gloria
Again with alt.  Then again, I have no idea what else to call this.  I went with Stadium since it’s the sports attire, but I guess Challenger is the common term?  Not a fan of the sports aesthetic, but we all know that.  But hey, at least she got Shado-...no.
General Overview Challenger Gloria comes in as a Fire Tech pair, with the ability to type shift into Fighting or Flying, by using her Max move once.  Using said Max Move additionally applies -2 rebuff to the target.  Her moves are Pyro Ball, Bounce, and High Jump Kick.  Pyro Ball is a 4-bar move with high damage, but 85 accuracy.  Notably, Gloria does not self-buff accuracy outside of specific grid nodes; her trainer move is a standard +4/+3, but with +1 evasion.  Depending on type, her passives change.  Fire gets Fuel Economy 2 and Brawn Sync 5, so a good natural boost to sync and an incredible -2 on gauge consumption.  Flying gets Piercing Blows, and -2 cooldown when using a quick move, such as Bounce, which functionally gives -1 as it’s a two-turn move, but the frontloading nature of this effect could have implications.  Fighting gets Piercing Gaze so you never risk killing yourself off High Jump Kick, and an unspecified amount of healing per hit.  Her grid focuses largely on the damage angle of each type, but notably has the option for Slippery Slope 9 to boost evasion every time a foe misses, and +2 physical moves up next when a miss happens.  With Bounce, both are guaranteed.
What is interesting about Gloria is the alleged versatility.  Any sync type can be used when fighting off-type, such as Gauntlet, and thus any set of passives can be chosen based on the team at hand.  If you’re running with slower options, Fire keeps gauge under control.  If you’re worried about gimmicks but don’t have something to check it, Flying has Piercing Blows, which still impacts your Pyro Ball.  If you’re worried about Latias’ evasion crap, Fighting ensures you hit.  Gloria can mix and match her skills at will, but only makes the selection one time, so it’s important to consider what you want and what the team is calling for.
And with those positives out of the way, I can cut to the chase: I do not respect this Gloria.
I’ve outlined the central issues in a separate post, but the short of it is that Gloria doesn’t add anything unique, and has severe sync issues for longer fights.  Most Techs operate in a building up fashion.  Once their conditions are fulfilled, they sync with obscene power forever after.  Gloria is the inverse.  She gets one burst to apply rebuff, and her sync is only good while it’s applied.  When it’s not there, her sync drops to a third of her damage.  Her DPS is also calculated based on rebuffs being present, and without them...it’s good but not great.  Pyro Ball and High Jump Kick are relevant, but don’t outperform previous heavyweights like SS May or SC Diantha.  Bounce is just bad DPS, only achieving relevance through very specific means.
Gloria is a gun with a single bullet.  Max Move, -2 rebuff, highest sync nuke in all three types when the rebuff is applied.  Great.  Without that rebuff?  She’s barely worth talking about as a sync nuker.  Once that sole target is dead, Gloria’s utility is dual strike.  Provided she’s on Fire parameters, or is spamming Bounce for some reason, Gloria’s gauge control is divine.  High Jump Kick as a one-bar spam?  That’s ludicrous.  Gloria excels by ensure the demise of center, and relying on allies to keep up DPS pressure for the sides.  Which isn’t a terrible strategy.  I do not mean to imply Gloria is terrible and never worth pulling.  But I want you to look at this kit, and tell me that this is top meta.  Gloria is good, but far from a demand.  The general community elevated her to the most meta relevant pick this month, and were talking about the next step in powercreep and all these things...and apparently a lot of people who pulled her are realizing she didn’t hold up to that expectation.  Pull her if you like her, but you’ve gotta recognize her limitations.  Because they are there.
EX and Move Level? While Tech usually means EX, Gloria’s sync is so abysmal without Rebuff that I honestly think you could do fine without it.  Her DPS is more her focus, and you don’t need EX for that.  Some will argue for evade tanking, and there the 20/20 stats are helpful.  Move level...I also have some trouble with.  Gloria’s DPS is also not exceptional, and her grid offers squat for direct DPS.  That said, I would argue the value of 2/5.  Pinpoint Entry is really useful given her moves can miss, and Slippery Slope is the skill to acquire for evade tanking.  If going Slippery Slope, 3/5 is an option for the +2 physical moves up next effect on a dodge to augment DPS.
Team 1: Alt Gloria, Gordie/SC Steven/Silver, H!Caitlin What’s that, a pair that caps crit and-you know the drill.  This time H!Caitlin is actually optimal, because she fixes accuracy issues for free.  What a hero.  Gordie is chosen for a very significant reason.  Fire Rebuff.  Gloria relies on rebuff, but her Max Move is its own nuke.  Gordie can apply a Fire Rebuff to foes, allowing Gloria to get her multiplier back.  He also sets Sun with his own Max Move.  As an alternative, SC Steven works for literally any of these damage types, and his Buddy move drops defenses rapidly.  But, if you want to aim for Dual Strike, Silver’s a decent pick.  His DPS isn’t fantastic, but his sync sets sun, and the combined DPS can blow past sides, while Max Move into Gloria’s sync will easily shred center.
I will mention two other dual strike components: SS Hilda, and SS May.  These two are worth noting, because Gloria works well with them as dual strike components for Fire.  That said, SS Hilda’s 4-bar spam means you’ll want more gauge support, while SS May in 3v3 fights is also very demanding for defense drops.  The two of them together in CS is a nightmare, because once a target is down, you start on the next one with nothing.  SS Hilda is also so powerful for 3v3 content that frankly, she wants Sun more than Gloria.  You can do SS Morty, but without him, other comps are preferred.
Team 2: Alt Gloria, H!Caitlin, Colress/Anni Steven/Summer Liza I say this entirely dependent on how the cooldown work.  Two-turn moves have a particular drawback, but it can be worked around.  Specifically, if you reach sync before the second half of the attack queues up, you can sneak in a Support EX to double that damage.  Gloria’s rotation is her trainer move, then Max Move to go Flying, then Bounce.  Given Bounce’s -2 cooldown, if this applies similar to SS Ethan’s trainer move, where the cooldown activates before the attack and animations complete, Caitlin can throw in a Support EX for a sure denial on left side, maintaining pace.  Another denial on right, then nuke center, which is where the Max Move should be aimed.  Colress is here to drop defense for the best odds of success.  While Dual Strike is possible, especially given the lack of gauge consumption for Bounce, I feel like there aren’t too many options to use with it, but you can throw in Anni Steven for a DPS complement, or Summer Liza for a sync complement (and DPS, she’ll manage well with Caitlin).
Team 3: Alt Gloria, Aura Cynthia/Marley, BrunoNC Hop Fighting aligns much better to Gloria, as far as Zone is concerned.  On the one hand, Aura Cynthia pumps defenses to maximum, which works well with the evasion Gloria starts with.  Since Gloria’s sync is bad after the rebuff is gone, Cynthia can just hog it for Zone benefits.  Cynthia is also exquisite at facilitating Dual Strike, which is Gloria’s favorite thing.  That said, Fighting is what Gloria does worst at for Dual Strike, given the lack of Fuel Economy 2, and 3-bars for her move.  But Cynthia makes up the difference, and the option for Bruno is very tempting (though man we need more Fighting pairs).  Alternatively, NC Hop can be used for the dual strike and field component, given his abilities.  In that case, bring Marley.  Team Sharp Entry saves Hop a turn of buffing, and she can cap speed to better manage the gauge.
Final Thoughts Stadium Gloria is an interesting case of great tools in the wrong place.  Type Shift is divine, but only doing it once on Max Move is a far cry from the Greninjas.  Being able to apply Rebuff is nice, and -2 is devastating, but only on one target by using an explosive Max Move is an incredibly limiting way to set it up.  With a complete lack of other team-based tools, Gloria relies on her sync, which is cut to a third its damage without a rebuff, and her DPS, which is adequate in Fire and Fighting but lacking in Flying.  Her best role, then, is dual strike.  Fire and Flying handle Dual Strike excellently thanks to low gauge cost for the damage she deals, but Fighting still feels reliant on others.  Gloria seems like an odd pair whose only standout trait is building evasion into +2 physical moves up next per dodge.  With this, she can contribute in a way beyond her competition.  But getting Slippery Slope and Phys Boost +2 is...a lot of energy, and highly RNG reliant.  To get both, you give up Haymaker entirely.  And she doesn’t really have multipliers for DPS.  Most of her focus is on-type, which is bad in the current meta.
So forgive me, but how in the hell is she the fan favorite right now?  I don’t even mean by “people like Gloria/Cinderace” standards, the latter of which will always be a mystery to me.  I mean people have been arguing on Reddit constantly that she’s the next evolution in powercreep, and it’s like...are we looking at the same pair?  This isn’t just not the new broken, it’s not even that good.  I really, truly do not see whatever it is others are seeing.

American Heroes [Part 4]
June Shingenchi (nee Rimokan) | Remoti
Part time but well respected scientist and hero, June is a woman of success but is also very tired. And she's fortunately that she's found time to be wife and mother despite her busy schedule. She's half White, half Japanese with lemon yellow hair, tan skin, and dark brown eyes. She is the niece of the hero Stop Motion.
Primary Quirk: Remote Control - June has the power to remotely control any and everything at any distance by simply moving her limbs. Not only does this make her a threat, but it makes her very powerful as well.
Secondary Quirk: Super Genius - June's intelligence and other mental skills are extremely heightened and enhanced beyond that of standard genius level intellect.
Selene Thiam-Yonaga | Remnant
Selene is the elegant Senegalese-American goth witch goddess heroine we deserve and need. She operates in New York at night and is quite a sight for the eyes. Her wife is the heroine Nocturne (Kurobi Yonaga) and they have three children together: Raven, Shadoe, and Moon.
Quirk: Abyss - Selene can create a dark, shadowy mist that she can use in a number of ways - one being teleportation. She can even turn her body into this mist and become intangible to others but they are tangible to her.
Richard Sween | Dynamo
One of the children of the late Motion Man, Richard has risen up to the challenge of continuing his father's heroic legacy. He also works part time as a detective/private investigator alongside his wife Bolster (Michaela Law-Sween). Despite his busy life, he always makes time for his daughter Winnie.
Quirk: Dynamic - Much like his sister Force (Carolina Sween Toyomitsu), Richard has almost godlike control over physical forces. Unlike her, however, his powers are more focused around doing things like absorbing, generating, negating, and enhancing physical forces.
Michaela Law-Sween | Bolster
The wife and partner of Dynamo (Richard Sween), Michaela knows how to keep up with her quick thinking husband at all times. When not fighting crime, she's solving it as a detective/private investigator. And she's not doing either, she's raising her daughter Winnie.
Quirk: Reinforce - Michaela can reshape and reconfigure any inorganic matter she either touches or that enters her biofield. This includes inorganic Quirks as well.

Happy birthday to actress Dolores Mantez, born on October 17th 1936. Dolores played SHADO Moonbase operative Lt. Nina Barry in 23 episodes of UFO and made more appearances in UFO than any other actor who wasn't Ed Bishop.
Gabrielle Drake only appeared in 10 episodes in the first half of the season/series. Both Dolores Mantez and Antonia Ellis (her real name, she played Joan Harrington). wore the purple wig more than Gabrielle did.

365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
May 28th - Red Arrow
Emiko ‘Emi’ Queen was born to Robert Queen and Shado on Starfish Island. She was kidnapped in her infancy by her father’s enemy, the villain known as Komodo. Komodo would go on to train Emiko for years with the Outsiders' Arrow clan, leading her to believe he was her father.  Under Komodo’s tutelage, Emiko came to be a highly skilled combatant and truly superb archer.
Later, Emiko accompanied Komodo on a mission to slay Robert Queen’s son, Oliver, who was now operating as the superhero Green Arrow.  Emiko discovered her true origins and she killed Komodo so to save the life of her half brother.
It was Emiko’s mother, Shado, who had told her the truth of her parentage and she drew Emiko into a complicated scheme to assassinate Green Arrow and Black Canary so to appease Shado’s masters among the assassins’ group known as The Ninth Circle.  At first it appeared as though Emiko was following through on her mother’s plot, yet it was later revealed that Emiko was acting on her own accord; all part of a desperate gambit to save the two heroes from The Ninth Circle.  Thanks to the aide of Henry Fyff and John Diggle, Emiko was able to pull it all off and Shado’s plans were dashed.
Emiko later established herself in Seattle as a costumed crime fight going by the name Red Arrow.  Shortly thereafter, Emiko was recruited to be a member of Damian Wayne’s newest iteration of The Teen Titans.   She remained with the team for a time, developing a close relationship with her teammate, Kid Flash.  After a mission goes awry and Emiko was forced to kill the villain Deathstroke, she decided to leave the squad and returned to Seattle to fight crime alongside her brother and Black Canary.
A version of Emiko Queen features int he Arrow television series portrayed by actress Sea Shimooka.  The heroine first appeared in the pages of Green Arrow Vol 5 #18 (2013).

"You won't find someone as special as her Min Yoongi" your boyfriend's mother whispered while smiling gently at the sight of you stirring the spicy chicken in the pot. You grinned in victory when not one drop of hot oil popped out and hit you. The delicious smell filled your whole apartment, today was a special day. You and Yoongi were celebrating six months of being in a relationship together. Time had flown by and you couldn't believe that you had met the amazing artist six months ago.
The two of you had immediately become serious, the musician had never been so in love with someone, you had started out as his masseuse as he was recovering from his shoulder operation but the two of you instantly clicked and before you knew it, you were crazy about the South Korean rapper. Keeping your relationship a secret was challenging at times but all of those worries instantly flew out the window the second you were back into each other's arms.
Yoongi's mother loved you so much too. She had seen her son go through the roughest times in his life. His surgery was one of them, he felt like he was a disappointment and a burden to BTS and this made his anxiety shoot through the roof. The fact that you suddenly swept into his life and made him realise that there was so much more than letting your own negative thoughts. That was one of his biggest battles and thanks to you, it became easier to handle his inner demons and chase them away for good.
Ï know mama" Yoongi smiled and looked back at you again, this time you were doing a happy dance because the food was coming out better than you had initially had thought. You turned around and gave your lover and his mother a happy wave before checking the something in the oven.
"Everyone loves her and I know that she's the right woman for you, my son. Don't hurt her and make sure to keep her happy, a happy wife means a happy life", Yoongi's mother continued to gush over you. She had seen the way the two of you looked at each other, your eyes showing  nothing but pure love and adoration for one another.
"Okay, I can take a break for a few minutes" you breathed while joining them on the couch. "How's your shoulder, hun?" you asked your boyfriend and gently ran a hand through his soft and smooth dark hair while smiling at him. Yoongi's cheeks flushed a crimson red while he gave you a cheeky grin and slightly moved his injured shoulder. The action made you scold at him, "The doctor said that you have to keep it completely still!.
Yoongi's mother laughed in adoration while watching you continue to lecture her son. He laughed loudly before leaning in and giving you a soft kiss on the cheek, still being shy at showing physical affection in front of someone else. Holding hands in public was more than enough to keep him sane and grounded but he just couldn't take the cuteness of your scolding.
When his lips left your cheek, you couldn't help but mouth "I love you" in Korean. The rapper sighed and mouthed the words back in English before closing his eyes and letting out a soft sigh, his pain medication had kicked in and he was getting sleepy.
"Come, let me tuck you in and I'll wake you when the food is done"you whispered and then stood up so that your lover could lie on the couch and get comfortable. His mother copied your actions and then went to check the food. "I love you so much [Y/N]" Yoongi whispered one last time, the words leaving your heart fluttering and your stomach doing happy flips.
You quickly leaned down and gave your boyfriend a peck on the lips, loving to feel his soft ones pressing harder against yours. You drank in the delicate sensations before pulling away and making sure that he was tucked in. Yoongi's eyes immediately closed as he fell asleep, the thought of you as his wife lingering in his mind while he zoned out the rest of the world.

Tarot 101: Using Personality Types to Understand Court Cards
Tumblr media
One of the ways we might read court cards, as I discussed in the previous part of my Tarot 101 series, is to look at them as people. A pulled tarot card might represent yourself or someone in your life, or you might even choose to select a court card as a signifier to intentionally represent yourself or someone else in a reading. But how do you choose? We can personalize and analyze the qualities of each card to understand how a selected court card might represent one person or another, but one interesting way of attaching personality these cards that has been discussed is using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test.
What is Myers-Briggs?
Tumblr media
By Jake Beech - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test (MBTI) is a “personality inventory” test used to make Carl Jung’s psychological research “understandable and useful” for people (Myers & Briggs Foundation). The test asks subjects to identify preferences based on the four dichotomies from Jung’s theories:
Favorite world - used to define Extraverted (E) or Introverted (I) personality types
Information - used to define Sensing (S) or Intuition (N) personality types
Decisions - used to define Thinking (T) or Feeling (F) personality types
Structure - used to define Judging (J) or Perceiving (P) personality types
When the result of each of these dichotomies is defined, a personality type is expressed in a four character “code” (Myers & Briggs Foundation).
(You can take the MBTI test here.)
What About Court Cards?
There are sixteen possible MBTI personality types (you can learn more about each type from the Myers-Briggs Foundation here). There are also sixteen court cards in a standard tarot deck with four face cards in each suit. The personality types can be more broadly attached to suits overall. For instance, Wands and Cups are both intuitive (N) suits, but wands are thinking (T) while cups are feeling (F). Swords and Pentacles can be paired in the same way. Both Swords and Pentacles are sensing (S) suits, but Swords are thinking (T) while Pentacles are feeling (F) (TarotX).
Using the MBTI personality codes can help us understand the ways that the suits interact with in a deck and how the different court cards differ from one another. As an example, we can look at the Knight of Wands and the Knight of Cups. Both intuitive individuals, but the Knight of Wands takes more time to think logically while the Knight of Cups is more considerate of people’s feelings and emotionally driven consequences.
It is also useful for breaking down stereotypes that are often embedded in the court cards, such as masculine power over feminine individuals with the implication that the Kings are move valuable cards than the Queens. (Plot twist: they’re equally capable and powerful cards, they just operate differently.) All MBTI personality types are equally valuable, and the court cards are too. Knowing your own MBTI personality type (or other’s) can be useful for getting a deeper understanding of the way court cards function should you choose to read them as people. It can also help you select signifiers by selecting the card that matches your particular personality type or selecting a card with a personality type you’d like to embody. For instance, if you are INTJ (Queen of Wands), you may choose to signify that you want to be more extroverted by placing an ENTJ (King of Wands) card.
Understanding and using MBTI tests and types and understanding Jung’s theories (which have been used to develop modern understandings of tarot and shadow work) is one way that you can continue to deepen your readings and give yourself more resources for approaching readings beyond card keywords.
