The Tedependent Masterpost

Essentially my deluded ramblings as to why I’m a Tedependent truther 😊

DISCLAIMER: I love TL and no matter what direction the writers take S3 in I will be on board! This is just a theory from some lil' details I noticed 😊Also so that if I turn out to be right I can say I told you so :o but if I’m wrong uhhhh.. you never saw this

Some various important notes before we get into it:

Firstly, I think it’s pretty likely that sexuality will come up in some form in S3. It fits in really well with the previous themes of the show (masculinity, mental health, relationships with fathers etc). TL has tackled some other issues such as the portrayal of mental health in sport but they haven’t mentioned sexuality yet despite it being a big topic (there’s only 1 out gay footballer… which is INSANE.. there’s a LOT of homophobia in football). So it makes a lot of sense for this to come up during S3. A lot of people have also theorized that Colin is gay and although I’m not going to go into that now I think it’s pretty likely and considering that Colin was one of Nate’s main “victims” (for want of a better word) it’s also likely that he’ll be more prominent in S3, perhaps even being a big part of Nate’s comeuppance. There’s also various rumours of Trent (and some say Colin too?) being seen filming at a gay nightclub in Amsterdam…

Interesting stuff....

In terms of whether or not Ted will have a romantic relationship in S3 I think it’s pretty likely through the “rom-communism” speech and how generally wholesome the show is that Ted will end up in a relationship at the end- especially as it would be very satisfying for Ted to start the show in a bad relationship and end it in a healthy one. Also the teaser dropping on Valentines is very…… interesting. Despite this it could be argued that Ted has to go through more personal growth before he’s ready to be in a long term relationship and with Ted most likely leaving for Kansas at the end of S3 he might not be in a good position to get into a new relationship. This is probably one of the biggest holes in this theory- whether Ted is ready for a relationship in S3. If he is though, I can think of someone who would be a very good option…

Before we talk about Trent though (yes there still is more to address) we need to address the other main option- Rebecca. I think it’s pretty unlikely that Ted will end up with Rebecca. Firstly it’s very cliché and the writers know that people expect Ted and Rebecca to end up together. They teased it in S2 before the Sam bantr reveal which felt to me like the writers saying that they know it’s what people expect but that they’re choosing not to go that direction. Speaking of Sam, although he and Rebecca technically ended S2 not together it’s very clear that that arc is not over yet and that’s still something that has to be dealt with in S3. Ted and Rebecca’s relationship is an incredibly valuable representation of close friendships/platonic relationships between men and women, and I think the writers understand this too:

To be clear, I don’t have any problem with people shipping Tedbecca! I actually think it can be quite a cute ship, I just don’t think it’s likely to happen in canon.

Now onto the fun bit! All the evidence!

I don’t think it’s in question that Trent is gay so I’m not really going to cover that here apart from saying that he leaves the pub with a man he’s seemingly on a date with an if you’re still not sold that he’s gay… just uh…. Just look at him..

First some quickfire evidence:

Ted calls Trent “baby”! s2 ep3 3 mins in! crazy stuff

S2 ep1 at about 6:20 Ted says “Trent Crimm, bringin’ that heat”- a reference to the very spicy Indian food they ate together

They speak more often than we see off-screen- we have the iconic “love our chats!” line implying that they have conversations outside of the show and Ted makes Trent’s daughter biscuits (s1 ep9 27:40), showing that he’s not only met Trent’s daughter before but is meeting her again soon to give her the biscuits

Slightly less quickfire evidence:

There’s a lot of similarities between Trent and Rebecca- this post details some of them, but there’s also similarities in lines- in s1 ep3 Ted says to Trent “watch your back Gay Talese there’s a new iconic profile about to be typed up by one Trent Crimm” then on s1 ep9 Ted says to Rebecca “watch your back Kate Moss there’s a new bad girl on the British modelling scene”. They also have very similar hair (look at the first two gifs of the above post), and the only two people Ted makes biscuits for on the show are Rebecca and Trent’s daughter. I believe this is a way of twisting the expectation that Rebecca and Ted are going to end up together to have Ted end up with someone similar, but not who people expect.

Some silly little scene analysis:

The first scene I’ll be talking about is s2, ep7, at about 31 minutes in. Before I go into depth about the details of this scene I’d suggest you rewatch it first, but I couldn’t find a clip of it on Youtube so just go to that timestamp. The first line in this scene is very strange- it’s Mae saying “If music be the food of love play on, give me excess of it”. This line seems completely pointless- it’s not really a joke, nor does it serve to further the plot or develop Mae’s character. But as I will repeat many times and cannot emphasise enough- lines in this show don’t get used lightly. This line is actually the opening line to Shakespeare’s most famous romantic comedy, Twelfth Night. And this line is used at the beginning of a scene with Ted and Trent when there’s seemingly NO REASON for it…. (I’m not going to get into the Shakespeare analysis now but if you want me to I will make a post about it :D)  We then see Trent saying goodbye to a man he’s on a date with- who has a moustache, no less. And THEN he says “of all the pub joints” which is a reference to the line “of all the gin joints” from the film Casablanca- and (mild spoilers for 3) the episode title of ep 8 is “We’ll never have Paris”, another reference to Casablanca. They end off this scene with Trent saying "Love our chats!". This line is reminiscent of when Ted asked Trent "What do you love?" in the Indian restaurant in s1 ep3, and also implies that they are closer than the show makes them seem.

Another very suspicious moment came at end of s2 ep12, which is the VERY LAST scene with Ted in the whole of S2. It’s also sandwiched in between the scenes about the other 2 major romantic relationships in the show- we get Sam and Rebecca, then Trent and Ted, then Roy and Keeley… Which in my opinion is a deliberate way of laying out these scenes to imply more about Trent and Ted’s relationship. Before I go on to talk about it here’s the clip for context: https://youtu.be/fF3A7XSk2HU (it’s pretty low quality so if you want to you can watch the clip at 44mins into s2 ep12). I think Trent waiting outside for Ted speaks for itself, but then there’s the line about the bike accident, where we learn that Trent doesn’t know how to ride a bike. Lines in this show are rarely used lightly and this is likely suggesting that we’ll get a scene of Trent learning how to ride a bike (potentially in Amsterdam?!). We then learn that Trent - and now I want you to listen closely on this part- has thrown away his entire career in journalism and his chance to ever work in journalism again by telling his boss that he revealed a source. And why did he do this? For Ted (...mostly. he has other reasons for leaving as well but...). Not only is this literally insane but by having Trent quit his job the writers have removed the only major barrier to Trent and Ted being in a relationship- whereas previously this might’ve been unethical because Trent was a journalist covering Richmond, that’s now no longer an issue. And then Trent has locked his keys in the car- which shows either how flustered he was when waiting to see Ted or could be implying that he’s here to stay.

Sorry for low quality but look at them. That is a normal way for two straight lads to look at another guy right?

Conclusion:

Some would say that I'm mad. I'd argue that if you look at the evidence there's a solid chance that Tedtrent could happen in Season 3- the sneaky little references to Casablanca and Shakespeare as well as literally the whole of their last scene together sold me the most tbh. It's hardly debatable that Trent has a crush on Ted, but I believe (hehe) that it could be reciprocal- there's not much evidence that Ted is bisexual, (references to queen and the frequent appearance of their songs as well as the choice of NSync's song "Bye bye bye" which is frequently used on the internet to mean "Bi bi bi") but then again, there's not much evidence that he's not. I feel like I could go on and I've definitely missed some things but this post is already far too long (1.6k words) and I need to stop!

I’d be interested to hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions, and feel free to drop a comment telling me how deluded I am because in all honestly I probably am…. Or am I………….. guess we’ll find out in season 3!

EDIT: ohhh my god I forgot- The scene w/ Ted and Trent at the end of s2 happens in the Richmond car park- just like Roy and Keeley in s1. And Ted met Michelle in a car park :)

HI. HELLO. I'm normal and chill about this show. Its a horror ttrpg show :-)!! Trope that never fails of What if a town was weird. Three childhood friends meet back up where they first met in their home town of sleepy Galloway, Louisiana. Its set in the past, a lot of jokes about old music and drugs etc etc. It only starts to get scary late into ep1 but when it hits it Hits. Charlie is genuinely a fantastic game master its incredible. Its about repression and the past and fucked up creatures in the woods and swamp. Also deeply a queer allegory blows a kiss to the sky For Rolan Deep, yes that is unfortunately his real name. Its a tragedy and a fuckin fantastically written one. And no you dont have to watch te video!!! The video is mostly just character art its a podcast :-)!! I think ep one is on spotify? If not theres an audio file somewhere i can send you. Ehehe ty for asking

180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us

This first ep just wow. I have really high hopes for this. If the quality continues it might just end up being the best thing I have seen so far.

21 Days Theory

Is this anything special? No. But do I like it? Yes. The only thing that worries me is that it’s only going to be 4 eps. We had 2 eps so far and we are only on day 3/4 of the bet. I feel like they will rush the ending.

The Eclipse

This show came in with a bang! First ep and I am already loving this. Had problems with sound mixing in ep1 but the director promised to fix it.

Unforgotten Night

Communication kings! Kamol has no secrets and he keeps telling Kim that he can ask him anything he wants.

War of Y

The angst in this BL. But this is good. Way better then some other director who claimed to be all about the dark side of BL. But I can see people not liking this show because they wanne keep on being in denial and pretend te BL world is all rainbows and sunshine. Because those people use BL as an escape from real life. So we can’t have their escape to be kinda harmful for the actors in it.

We hebben allemaal wel al eens gehoord van South Park en hun vele conflicten, maar is de kritiek wel zo terecht als mensen zeggen? Ik bekeek de afleveringen en vroeg aan een aantal mensen wat zij ervan vonden. 

Wat is South park? 

S9 ep1: “Mr Garrison’s fancy new vagina” 

S12 ep5: “Eek, a penis!” 

S18 ep3: “The cissy” 

S23 ep7: “Board girls” 

Wat vinden mensen? 

Wat is South Park? 

South Park is een animatieserie over vier jongens in het kleine dorp met dezelfde naam. Het is gemaakt door Matt Stone en Trey Parker en eerst uitgekomen in 1997 op de zender Comedy Central. De show heeft ondertussen al 26 seizoenen en 326 afleveringen en dit is nog lang niet het einde van de serie. 

Seizoen 9, aflevering 1: “Mr Garrison’s fancy new vagina” 

In deze aflevering krijgt Mr Garrison een operatie om de vrouw te worden die hij nooit kon zijn. De operatie wordt accuraat beschreven en is dus goed onderzocht door de schrijvers maar het gedrag van de nu Mrs Garrison is heel stereotiep. Ze gaat direct naar de winkel voor tampons, is snel emotioneel en gedraagt zich overdreven vrouwelijk. Maar als ze beseft dat ze bijvoorbeeld geen maandstonden kan krijgen, voelt ze zich toch niet echt een vrouw. 

Wanneer Mrs Garrison de vier hoofdpersonages tegenkomt, wordt Kyle nieuwsgierig. Hij vraagt aan zijn moeder Sheela wat het betekent om transgender te zijn, ze legt uit dat de buitenkant van een persoon niet altijd toont wie die van binnen is en daarom kan je een operatie uitvoeren om meer te lijken op de persoon die je zelf ziet. Deze omschrijving is heel mooi verwoord maar Kyle neemt het anders op. Kyle besluit zijn uiterlijk aan te passen door zichzelf groter te maken en zijn huidskleur te veranderen, ook wel “transraciaal” genoemd.  

Deze aflevering geeft de boodschap dat ondanks de veranderingen aan hun buitenkant, ze nog steeds hun geboortegender zijn maar is dit de schrijvers hun mening of willen ze aantonen wat sommigen denken? 

Seizoen 12, aflevering 5: “Eek, a penis!” 

Mrs Garrison heeft spijt van haar transitie, hij vindt zichzelf nog steeds een man omdat hij geen kinderen kan krijgen. Volgens hem is dat wat je vrouw maakt ondanks niet elke vrouw de mogelijkheid heeft om zwanger te geraken. 

Seizoen 18, aflevering 3: “The cissy” 

Eric Cartman, een van de hoofdpersonages, doet zich voor als transgender omdat hij denkt dat vrouw zijn veel voordelen heeft zoals properdere schooltoiletten. Hij is al gekend als een ruziestoker en wordt dus naar de directie gestuurd. Ze maken een nieuw toilethokje voor transmensen maar wanneer anderen dit ook beginnen te gebruiken wordt hij kwaad. 

Seizoen 23, aflevering 7: “Board girls” 

“Strong Woman” doet mee met de jaarlijkse sterke vrouwen competitie maar neemt er een transvrouw deel die net aan haar transitie begonnen is. Nu blijkt die de ex-vriend van “Strong Woman” te zijn en zou die in transitie gegaan zijn om haar terug te pakken.

Wat vinden mensen? 

Na een bevraging bij enkelen blijkt de term “transraciaal” toch niet zo gekend te zijn. De meesten waren van mening dat het niet kan bestaan. Het is niet mogelijk omdat het voortkomt uit je familie en bloedlijn dit kan je niet zomaar veranderen. 

Wat vinden de respondenten ervan dat mensen beweren dat je ongesteld moet zijn om echt een vrouw te zijn? Ze hadden allemaal een uitgesproken mening over dit onderwerp. Er zijn oneindig veel eigenschappen die iemand vrouw kunnen maken. 

Ik stelde ook de vraag of transpersonen welkom zijn in het openbare toilet naar keuze, de antwoorden waren unaniem en zagen er geen problemen in. 

Het deelnemen aan sport door trans personen brengt vaak verschillende meningen op. Velen vinden dat het zeker moet kunnen als er rekening gehouden wordt met de hormonen.

"I will kiss you" (threatening) - A Meta on Ayan's Flirting

I feel like in BL there's sometimes these characters who'll immediately make flirty comments to their love interest from the start (often even before the characters have really connected) just because it’s a BL and needs romance and flirting by force of genre.

And that usually tends to annoy me bc it often just feels so forced, but this time I absolutely LOVED Ayan’s flirty behaviour towards Akk all throughout episode 1. Because unlike most BL characters, Ayan isn’t being flirty for the sake of being flirty. Neither is he trying to make Akk fall in love with him. No, on the contrary: all his flirty behavior is a strategy with the aim of getting rid of Akk.

Hold on, I’m gonna elaborate. (And buckle up, because this is going to be long.)

So, the series immediately establishes the two opposing characters:

Akk – the rule keeper

Ayan – the rule breaker

We immediately know there is going to be a conflict of interests between them and that the story will take us to them resolving this issue.

Part 1: Teachers’ Bathroom scene

I want to start with the scene in the teachers’ bathroom. Yes, I know Ayan doesn’t actually make a flirty comment in that scene but I think it’s still an interesting scene to take a look at as it’s their very first interaction and introduces us to their dynamic in this episode. And what is their dynamic? Well, Ayan is just minding his own business and it’s Akk who keeps bugging him, threatening him, attacking him, never leaving him alone. Which leaves Ayan in a position where he has to defend himself.

We immediately get introduced to this pattern in the scene in the teachers’ bathtroom. Although really we have to go all the way back to the car accident. As it’s only been one episode, we as viewers don’t yet know what Ayan was really doing and whether he had a hand in the accident or not, but for now we can assume he was minding his own business and definitely wasn’t bothering Akk personally. It’s Akk who spots him and immediately has it out for Ayan, running after him, following him all the way to the toilets and snapping at Ayan for breaking a school rule first thing as soon as he’s caught up to him.

This is “attack” no. 1, initiated by Akk. However, Ayan remains completely unimpressed and sasses back. So Akk “attacks” again: “Why aren’t you wearing your school uniform?”

Ayan is still not having any of this “you gotta follow the rules” shit, so he firmly informs Akk that he has no interest in doing so. With that, the conversation is over for Ayan and he pushes Akk aside to exit the bathroom.

However, Akk isn’t yet done with the conversation, so he starts round 3 of “attacks”, trying to establish his authority as a school prefect.

So once again Ayan is forced to defend himself against Akk who just won't leave him alone. He does so by getting sassy again and bringing up the car accident from earlier.

Three times Akk was bothering Ayan, three times Ayan needed to find a way to make Akk lay off him. This is a pattern, that will follow us throughout the episode.

Part 2: “Catch me if you can”

Now here is where the flirting starts.

Turns out that Ayan will be in the same class as Akk and Akk immediately requests that Ayan shares a desk with him. Thanks to the incident in the teachers’ bathroom Ayan is very well aware that Akk’s offer didn’t come out of the goodness of his heart, but Ayan accepts the seat nevertheless. And Akk doesn’t plan on hiding his intentions anyway. In fact, he very explicitly threatens Ayan: “Whatever you’re here for, I’ll be watching you. Keep that in mind.”

This absolutely is an attack on Ayan’s boundaries of personal space, and now Ayan’s had enough. You wanna get all up in my personal space? Fine, two can play at that game.

I love how you can just see the moment he takes the decision to play when that tiny smile that forms on his face.

And what does he do?

He puts his hand on Akk’s thigh, turning Akk's threat into a challenge: “Catch me if you can.”

And it works. Akk is quick to push Ayan’s hand off, looking kinda uncomfortable. Ayan smiles smugly. He's won. And now he’s got a weapon against Akk.

Part 3: “You punch me once. I kiss you once.”

The scene starts out with Ayan about to enter the school. He’s standing there, minding his own business, lost in thought when–

Akk strikes again. Still bugging Ayan about the school uniforms. Ayan, rather annoyed, retaliates by questioning Akk’s world views. This pisses Akk off and he aggressively grabs Ayan’s collar.

It’s the first incident of physical violence between them and it’s initiated by Akk. Even Ayan calls him out on it: “Is the rule keeper breaking the rule by using violence against me now?”

And seeing as Ayan definitely didn’t like having violence used against him, he launches into a counterattack. However, he doesn't punch back, he doesn't use violence in return. No. Ayan has just figured out a weapon and he’s going to use it: “You punch me once. I kiss you once.”

Weaponized flirting. We love to see it.

Anyway, he makes some kissy faces at Akk to really drive home his point, trying to get Akk to let go of his hoodie. And while Akk isn’t pushing Ayan away, it still works insofar that Akk completely freezes. He goes into error 404 mode and finally shuts up.

Then the school announcement calling all the prefects cuts through, which pulls Akk out of error mode and makes him look away towards the school. He still hasn’t let go of Ayan, though, and when Akk turns back, Ayan is still leaning closer, challenging him. Now that Akk is able to move again, he finally pushes Ayan away. He finally lets go of Ayan's collar, resulting in a satisfied smile on Ayan’s face.

Ayan has the upper hand. Akk can’t quite accept defeat just yet and threatens violence again: “If I didn’t get called, you’d get hurt.” But as usual, Ayan is not impressed and only taunts him: “What a shame. You just missed a kiss from me.”

This exchange keeps going for a bit, with Akk threatening violence while Ayan keeps behaving aggressively flirty:

Akk: “What a jackass! You’ll have to deal with me one day.” Ayan: “Bring it on. Right here. Right now.” Akk: “Shut up. Don’t you think I wouldn’t hit you.”

With that last sentence Akk gets physical again, pulling Ayan’s hood with force, still not leaving Ayan alone.

So Ayan doubles down. He plays it cool, stands his ground and gets even more into Akk's space than before: this time, he’s the one grabbing Akk by his collar, pulling him closer as he goes “I just love people who are cocky.”, blowing another kiss at Akk for good measure.

This time Akk doesn’t freeze but pushes Ayan away immediately and walks off.

Ayan has won. And to rub salt into the wound, Ayan calls after Akk again to make one last kissy face at him.

You can tell it’s a strategy, because Ayan completely drops his flirty demeanor as soon as Akk is out of sight and goes straight back to business, back to where he was before Akk had interrupted him.

Part 4: Ayan writing into his notebook

I was actually gonna skip this because not much is happening here. But in the end I did quickly want to point out that here we have once again the pattern of Ayan minding his own business (writing into his notebook) and Akk interrupting him (showing up with his friends, bugging Ayan about not being in class). Ayan defends himself with a sassy comment. Lucky for Ayan, Akk and his friends leave shortly after that as they get distracted with prefect duties. Ayan doesn’t get flirty with Akk in this scene, since Akk doesn’t bother him long enough for Ayan to be forced to bring out the flirty weapons in order to get rid of Akk.

Part 5: notice board scene

This scene is actually kinda funny, bc Ayan’s flirt-to-get-rid-of-Akk strategy works, but entirely on accident.

Anyway, let’s start from the beginning. Ayan is minding his own business as usual, looking at the flyers on the notice board when Akk (who followed Ayan after class) disturbs his peace again, this time by getting physical right away, grabbing Ayan’s shoulder and turning him around while asking “What do you think you’re doing?”

Ayan is startled and you can see how for a moment he tries to figure out what to do.

In the end he decides to stay friendly, telling Akk somewhat of a truth: “Just looking at these leaflets. They’re interesting.” But in the end Ayan can’t help himself but irritate Akk just a little bit after all. “The World Remembers gang is so cool. The next Hyde Park is going to be so much fun.”

This irritates Akk indeed, who snaps at Ayan: “Don’t you even think about joining them.”

Ayan retaliates by implying feelings. “Are you worried about me? Are you afraid i’d be cursed like them?”

This starts an argument between the two of them. Akk voices his suspicions of Ayan, Ayan questions Akk's views on rules, Akk isn’t having it and deflects with “Who sent you to mess with this school?”

And this is where it gets funny. Because this comment makes Ayan roll his eyes and then he’s ready to get into some more arguing… except he suddenly notices Akk’s tilted pin and gets distracted. He’s like hold on, I really gotta fix that before we can continue our argument, but what he doesn’t expect is that this first moment of genuine connection, this first display of care overwhelms Akk. Akk quickly leaves the scene. You can tell that Ayan didn’t mean to fix the pin in an attempt to get rid of Akk from the way he watches Akk walk away with a confused face all like Huh?? Weren’t we in the middle of a fight just now?? Aren’t we going to argue some more??

Compare this with how smug he's looked so far whenever he was flirting on purpose.

Part 6: Foreign Language Department Scene

Ayan is off doing his own thing again, looking around the foreign language department and actually acting kinda shady for a change. Akk finds him in the hallway and calls out to him: “What are you doing? What are you doing here?”

For once, Akk isn’t just a minor annoyance in Ayan’s life but rather in that moment Akk’s appearance is very inconvenient for Ayan. He needs Akk gone asap, so instead of arguing or making up an excuse Ayan immediately launches into a flirt-attack, so that Akk will leave quickly as he’s done all these times before. “You’ve been following me everywhere. Are you into me, prefect?”

Spoiler alert: this time this strategy won’t work.

See, the thing is that Akk actually kinda is into Ayan now, whether Akk is aware of it or not. He’s been obsessing over Ayan all episode, constantly searching for him, researching him, thinking of him, getting close to him. And then the pin. Something happened to Akk when Ayan tried to fix the tilted pin, and it affected Akk so much, to the point where he couldn’t focus on his homework while the uniform with the pin was still in sight.

Plus, by now Akk has also gotten used to Ayan’s flirty comments. They don’t hit him out of nowhere anymore.

So when Ayan asks if Akk is into him, he does take a moment, still unsure how to deal with it, but he doesn’t look very surprised or shocked.

He swallows, and then decides he won’t be backing off. In fact, he even takes a little step closer to Ayan when he says “I’m not a friend you can play with.”

Ayan still needs Akk gone, though, so he tries again: “Do you think of me as more than a friend, then?”

And Akk falls back into his old habit of threatening violence again. And it’s actually pretty funny because he tells Ayan “If you don’t shut that foul mouth, it will get punched by me.” knowing full well Ayan said he would kiss Akk if Akk were to punch him. And Akk's saying this in the context of something LGBT having already happened to him during the pin-fixing moment, too. (Wanting and asking for a kiss much @Akk? lol)

So we get this bit of fun dialogue where they’re partly bickering and arguing, partly trying to win superiority over the other (Ayan needs superiority so that Akk will leave, Akk needs superiority so Ayan will comply to the rules and respect his status as a school prefect) and partly genuinely flirting while also slowly moving closer and closer into each other’s physical space as both of them refuse to back down.

Ayan: “Do you think of me as more than a friend then?” Akk: “If you don’t shut that foul mouth, it will get punched by me. You’re small but talk so big.” Ayan: “I’m small and what? What can a big guy like you do to me?” Akk: “I can do more than you think.” Ayan: “Do you even know what I’m thinking?”

It’s only when someone walks past that Akk pushes Ayan away. However, Akk doesn’t leave, not this time. He stays right there in order to continue arguing and to continue bugging Ayan: “What are you doing in a teacher’s room this hour?”

I know I just said something about them “genuinely flirting” while the entire point of this post has been all about how Ayan’s flirting is a strategy to get rid of Akk. Let me tell you, there’s no contradiction here, though. I said what I said. While their little exchange from above might have ended with an air of genuine flirting, the reason why Ayan started flirting in the first place was definitely to make Akk leave. And how do we know? By what comes after.

Because during that little exchange from just now Ayan learns that the flirting is no longer working. Akk isn’t backing down, he’s not running away this time. So as soon as their bickering is interrupted and Akk starts the entire argument anew by asking Ayan what he’s doing there, Ayan drops the act and changes his strategy. From then on Ayan doesn’t make a single flirty comment to Akk for the rest of the scene and tries different things instead.

First he tries a believable excuse, claiming that he's seeking advice from an English teacher. This strategy doesn't work either, because Akk calls bullshit on this claim and doesn't believe him. They bicker, then Ayan brings up the flower pot and the school curse to rile Akk up. Ayan also insults the school, which pisses Akk off and he falls back onto physical violence again, aggressively grabbing Ayan’s collar, pulling him closer and snapping at him.

Akk continues to ask “Seriously, what did the school members ever do to you? What did we do to you? Why are you ruining our reputation?”

And now Ayan is angry. Instead of trying to make Akk leave, Ayan now shoves off Akk’s hand and walks away himself.

In conclusion:

All throughout Ep. 1 Ayan was flirting with Akk with the purpose of pushing Akk away. And I cannot WAIT to see him go from

“I will kiss you” (threatening)

to

Okay I have a bunch of thoughts for the Wot Finale.

Warning! Show Spoilers for the whole season and Mild Book spoilers mostly for comparing characterisations between book and show (no plot)

This was probably the episode that left me with the most mixed feelings. However, I definitely think that my viewing is strongly coloured by my reading of the og story as a book reader.

I watched the entire show twice once with a non-reader friend and my non-reader parents. And while they do have some critiques they were very engaged and overall enjoyed the finale, so te season was definitely as success.

I personally enjoyed quite a lot of the changes and additons. Some personal favourites include the Moiraine stilling/shielding, Amalisa as a trained but weak channeler harnessing the power of wilders Egg, Ny and turning the Eye into a trap by Ishy in which he tries to tempt Rand.

However, there a lot of small things that definitely bothered me. This includes the Fake-out Nyneave, Loial and Uno death, Egwene's wonder healing, basically having all the men of Fal Dara die just for the woman to completely destroy the trolloc army (like I get the need for dramatic stakes, but why couldn’t the channelers join them at the fortress?), also Lan needing to be told Moiraine's "tell" seemed very silly (like he is a master tracker and traveled for decades with her... but he couldn’t follow her?)

Ultimately though these minor issues didn’t truely detract from my enjoyment of the episode.

However, I finally realized why I personally can't enjoy this adaptation as much as I wanted to. And most of this comes down to Rand's characterisation.

(He and Nyneave are my favourite characters, though so there is a clear bias here)

This whole season has reduced a lot of focus on Rand's character journey for the benefit of the other 4 Emond's fielders. This I actually really liked as the show has much less time to set them all up as main characters and definitely benefited from giving each of them more to do early on. This of course meant they had to streamline Rand's journey for it to still work on Tv.

To do this they decided to focus on Rand's relationship with Egwene, and while they definitely improved this relationship by a lot, it ultimately always felt like one of the least interesting beats in Rand's journey to me.

While they did touch on Rand's relationship with Tam, his friendship with Mat and his Aiel looks, these things never really came up during his big moment in the finale episode. In the end his big test came down to not taking away Egwene's free will and recognising that her ambitions are bigger than a simple farm life.

Which is fine I guess, but Rand pretty much let her chose her own fate already in Ep1 and reaffirmed her decision to become an Aes Sedai in Ep 7... which made this whole moment feel kinda hollow to me.

This, to me at least, is just much less interesting than his struggle in the books, where he feels alienated and isolated due to always having been set appart physically coupled by his discovery of his adoption and that he ethnically belongs to a group of people that are feared/hated in his community.

This made me personally really connect with his character as this is definitely something I can relate to a lot.

This whole struggle is of course a lot harder to portray on screen, but I feel that if they had used Ishy's temptation in the last episode a little more cleverly they could have shown us this identity struggle. Maybe by bringing in Tam and letting Egwene leaving him behind for bigger things play into his feeling of alienation.

Added to that I wish they had given Rand something to demonstrate not necessarily his power but the utter destruction that he could cause, as his fear of his own potential madness and the danger this represents is central to his character arc (at least to me).

Ultimately, I think a lot of this comes down to different interpretations of the books. Rafe has said multiple times that he intense to preserve the characters and their essence. However, the issue is that what makes up these characters is still highly subjectiv. So this probably means that what made me attached to Rand's character wasn’t what the writers saw as vital to him and that is fine. It doesn’t mean that it is bad adaptation or that Rafe and his team didn’t respect the books. It just means that their vision isn't mine.
