Midwest Gymnastics rocketed to national prominence after one of its founders, Jess Graba, coached Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee. But three former gymnasts said at Midwest they experienced public weigh ins, verbal berating, and at times were left to practice dangerous skills unsupervised.
There has been a SafeSport report filed against Jess Graba and Alison Lim at Midwest Gymnastics.
Watch This Space: The USAG International Elite Committee in the Olympic Year
Since USAG governance is a thing @darthmelyanna and I keep harping on I thought I'd show one of the reasons we care about the makeup of this committee. This is where selection procedures and petition rules are written.
The coach representatives are voted on by the coaches who have athletes at US nationals that year. Please notice how many times the meeting goes ahead without the athlete rep (if a coach rep is missing they get an alternate). Also Kim Zmeksal as the Athlete rep when she was coaching elite athletes is a thing that happened.
If you are going "wait these people all have a conflict of interest" you are right. It's by design. This was the system they came up with to replace the 1992 selection that brought so much unwanted attention.
“ Everyone is talking about Asac being a bad choice for Team Coordinator for the US, and here I am, thinking that honestly, as long as she's not an abuser, I'm good. Standards are low. “
I am going to try to be less…callous in the new year. I am just truly unpleasant, especially to people who express romantic interest in me. So even though their interest in me bugs me, I want to be more pleasant about it. Sounds great.
However!!
I was raised by:
- A high maintenance mother from New York
- An absentee addict father from Compton
- USA Gymnastics
So, you can see that I’m going to have an uphill battle. I am sadly the tiktok audio where the voice says “Oh? We’re being rude? Awesome, cool…my fucking turn.”
doctor who coming back in the year of 2023 when terfism and biological essentialism and transphobia are on the rise and making one of THE most hyped up episodes by bringing back fan favorites david tennant and catherine tate. all about being trans
showing rose being bullied and her grandma struggling to get it right but still being supportive. and shaun and donna being the greatest parents by being ready to burn the world down to protect their daughter. the doctor asking for the meep's pronouns AND IT'S NORMAL???
and all of that is brilliant to see rose as a trans character and it is important to the narrative. BUT THEN. ROSE BEING TRANS SAVES DONNA'S LIFE BY TAKING HALF OF THE METACRISIS. BECAUSE THE DOCTOR IS MALE AND FEMALE AND NEITHER AND MORE. AND THAT IS INTEGRAL TO DOCTOR WHO AS A WHOLE. and it saved donna's life
to see doctor who be so BLATANTLY trans and nonbinary at the core of the series. the multiple references to the fact that before fourteen, thirteen was a woman. so to see this? trans people stay winning. thank you doctor who for doubling down on the importance of the doctor being trans because oh my god I am so emotional about this
"both sides are suffering" really? because one is buried under rubble without any access to food, water, sanitation products, no fuel for ambulances, no electricity to support incubators for preterm babies, no proper beds or equipment for major surgeries, using vinegar as disinfectant, relying on phone lights to operate, has run out of body bags, had their largest bakery which received humanitarian aid bombed immediately after while the other is dancing and feasting and rejoicing and making tiktoks in clean clothes and brightly-lit rooms with electricity...
Apropos of nothing and largely influenced by my parasocial emotions, this is my current, non-expert prediction for the USA WAG team at the 2024 Olympics.
TEAM and ALTERNATES: Jordan; Simone; Jade; Shilese; Suni; Leanne; Konnor
OTHER SERIOUS CONTENDERS (in order): Trinity; Kayla; Joscelyn; Skye; Tiana; Zoe; Addison; Lexi; Nola; Katelyn; Gabby?????????
"humans were meant to-" "we were put on this earth to-" no we were not, the telos is a trap, find a less obnoxious way to phrase whatever point you want to make i am begging you
i just read about the "narcissism of small differences," aka the idea that the more a community has in common, the more likely the people in it are to engage in interpersonal feuds and mutual ridicule because of hypersensitivity to minor differences perceived in each other, and i knew there was a reason my time in academia and fandom felt oddly similar lmao
USAG International Elite Committee Minutes for November 18, 2022
The main thing discussed here are changes to the TOPS program as well as changes to the elite compulsory exercises. If you have a child or athletes who that applies to it's worth a read.
For general fans the interesting information here is the makeup of the committee. Kelli Hill retained the chair despite retiring from other coaching. Slava and Marnie Futch have been on the committee before but the addition of Brian Carey is worth notice.
Because he was the Worlds Team head coach for 2022 him now serving on this committee means that he joins the fairly short list of people who could potentially replace Hill when she steps down (you have to have served on the IEC which Carey had not done before and have been either a coach or assistant coach of a worlds or olympic team). Given the list of people who could replace Hill is either full of very terrible people (literally) or people who would never take the job it's a notable addition.
disappointed but not surprised seeing how al fong was continually defended for years by the “but he’s changed!” narrative every time someone brought up how two of his gymnasts died
