Structured vs Unstructured Interview
You've probably heard the term 'unstructured interview' before. What does it mean exactly? How should you prepare for it? Learn more: https://blog.hirenest.com/structured-vs-unstructured-interview/
Unstructured interviews are often used by recruiters or hiring managers who want to get a better understanding of candidates. They ask questions without giving them much guidance beforehand.
This type of interview is usually conducted over the phone or via video chat. The interviewer asks open-ended questions and lets the candidate talk freely. This method allows the recruiter to see how well they communicate and interact with other people.
Tumblr media
In this article we will discuss some tips to help you ace unstructured interviews.
It's important to note that most companies don't conduct unstructured interviews anymore because they find them too inefficient. Instead, they prefer structured interviews where they give you specific instructions and guidelines ahead of time. These types of interviews tend to be less stressful and allow you to focus more on answering the question than thinking about what to say next.
The best way to prepare for an unstructured interview is to practice at home. Try asking yourself questions like "What would I do if I were interviewing someone?" or "How could I improve my communication skills?". Then try talking through each scenario with a friend or family member.
If you're looking for a job, then you'll likely face many different kinds of interviews. Some employers may invite you to come into the office for a one-on-one conversation; others might send you an email inviting you to apply online. Others still may require you to fill out a form and submit it along with a resume.
Differences Between Structured and Unstructured Interview
The interviewee may not always know what he/she wants to say. This is called “unstructured interviewing.” In this case, the interviewer has to ask questions in order to find out what the person wants to talk about. You can find out more in our article: https://blog.hirenest.com/structured-vs-unstructured-interview/
The interviewee will usually feel uncomfortable if the interviewer asks too many questions at once. It is important to give him/her enough time to answer each question before moving on to another one.
The interviewee should be given plenty of time to think about his/her answers. If the interviewee does not seem comfortable answering a particular question, it is better to move on to another topic rather than pressing him/her further.
How do I choose a career?
There are several factors that influence our choice of careers. These include personal interests, family responsibilities, financial considerations, and opportunities available. Some people may find certain jobs more interesting than others, but they all require hard work and dedication.
A career change is often necessary because we grow older and develop new skills and knowledge. This means that we must constantly update ourselves so that we remain relevant in our field. Career changes can be difficult, especially if we lack experience in a different area. But this is why we need to take risks and try out new things.
What are the advantages of a structured interview?
The most important advantage of a structured interview is that it provides a standardized way to evaluate candidates. This helps ensure consistency across interviews and makes it easier to compare candidates against one another. It also allows recruiters to identify trends in performance during the interview process. For example, if a candidate consistently answers poorly on a particular question, then this may indicate they lack the necessary skills to perform well at work.
A structured interview should include a combination of both behavioral and cognitive tests. Behavioral tests measure a person’s ability to do specific tasks, while cognitive tests assess whether someone has the knowledge required to complete those tasks. These two types of tests provide different information but together help determine whether a job applicant will succeed in the role.
Cognitive tests are often used to test applicants’ reasoning abilities, memory, attention span, problem solving, and critical thinking. They are typically administered using paper-and-pencil tests, although some companies now offer computerized versions. Some employers prefer to administer cognitive tests through phone screens because they believe it gives them better insight into a candidate’s personality traits.
In addition to testing for cognitive skills, many companies conduct behavioral assessments to see how people behave under pressure. Common examples include the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Hogan Development Survey. Both of these tools attempt to classify individuals based on their behavior and preferences. While these tests aren’t perfect, they can give recruiters valuable insights into how a potential employee would fit within the company culture.
What are the advantages of an unstructured interview?
The main advantage of this type of interview is that it allows candidates to demonstrate their skills without being constrained by a rigid structure. It also gives employers a chance to see if they like working with someone who has different ideas from them.
This approach is particularly useful for people who don't want to do formal interviews but still want to show off their skills. For example, if you're applying for a job at a company where you've worked before, then you might not want to spend too long talking about what you did last week, because you'll look like you're bragging. Instead, you could talk about something you enjoyed doing during your previous role.
Interviewers should ask questions that will help them understand whether the candidate's strengths match the needs of the organisation. They should try to find out why the person wants to work for them, what motivates them, and what makes them stand out from others.
Conclusion
In order to understand what makes one candidate more qualified than another, interviewers need to ask questions that help them learn about the candidates' strengths and weaknesses. This type of interviewing technique is called structured interviewing. It's also known as behavioral interviewing. Behavioral interviews are used by recruiters to find out whether someone has the skills needed to succeed in a particular job. They're also used by hiring managers to determine whether a candidate is right for the company.
A common mistake people make when they first start working from home is not having any structure at all. If you don't set aside specific times for work, you'll never finish anything. And if you do manage to stay focused, you won't be able to concentrate long enough to actually produce quality content. f you want to know more about Structured vs Unstructured Interview:  Which Is Better 2022?, read this article: https://blog.hirenest.com/structured-vs-unstructured-interview/

'forced conformity is killing the kids'
Mike Wheeler ST5 Theory/analysis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we've all seen the new BTS of Finn Wolfhard on the set of Stranger Things dropped and OH MY GOD. THE DUALITY FROM LAST SEASON.
I have to TRY write about it ATLEAST...because wow I have a lot of potential thoughts, sorry it's once again unstructured, messy, and repetitive but stay with me please!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen ALOT of people happy we're getting s1-2 Mike hair back but guys .....it's not a good thing!!!!!!!!!! Mike is going THROUGH IT.
______________________________________________
In Season 4 it's acknowledged that Mike is finally coming into his own a bit, Eddie says he was wearing 'whatever his mom bought him' when he first came to highschool, but in episode 1 when we see him for the first time in S4, he's clearly been influenced by Eddie and has figured out what style he likes and what he's interested in, he's in a DND club, he's comfortable being known as an uncool nerd, he's growing his hair out (yes I DO believe it's because he idolised Eddie, I have more to say about that in a second)
basically: his hair and his outfits, aswell as pretty much the way he acts in Hawkins (NOT California- he goes back to pretending to be something else) in S4 represents the ideology non-conformity and his sense freedom in this new persona
he doesn't feel lost in highschool anymore, he's doing what he likes with his friends (DnD) and he's proudly wearing his hellfire shirt around school/Hawkins, basically, he's accepting that it's okay to enjoy 'different' things that aren't considered the norm, and it makes him happy, he feels comfortable!
_____________________________________________
But now in Season 5, from the pictures we've seen, it looks like he's fully reverted back into his shell, I guess I understand why tbh I don't blame him:
he comes back to Hawkins after everything and everyone believes he's in a satanic cult- townspeople probably treat him badly and Jason's team mates probably blame Eddie and the rest of hellfire for Jason's 'disappearance' (death). They directly connect him with all the horrible things that have happened to Hawkins as of late
...which is probably what the BTS of them walking towards Mike are about, they probably keep harassing him no matter how he acts and Mike just wants them to leave him alone, let's face it:
High school has probably gone full circle back to middle school for Mike and he's getting bullied/mistreated again. So he feels his only option is to remove himself from Hellfire and become 'normal'.
Hellfire might maybe even be blamed for the gates being opened. Last we heard, the townspeople were hunting down Eddie and the rest of hellfire, and the graffiti on Eddie's grave in the S5 pics shows that he's still very much hated.
Mike probably got harassed by multiple people who don't believe Eddie's dead, or believe Mike was in on it and are out looking for him, or think Hellfire contributed to some satanic ritual causing the 'earthquake' and thus Mike is also a target and it's dangerous for him.
So I think part of the style change and haircut is due to THAT, he doesn't wear his hellfire shirt anymore because he doesn't want any affiliation with the club.
As Finn Wolfhard has said in previous interviews 'mikes just trying to act as normal as possible' so by seperating himself from Eddie/Hellfire and becoming more conventionally 'normal' he won't be treated like an outcast.
He won't be assaulted, bullied, blamed, or worse if he conforms. He has a greater chance of everything becoming better/easier while living in Hawkins if he does this, he might have even given up DnD aswell- so yeah he's gonna be pretty MISERABLE in season 5
___________________________________________
Alot of people wanted to see his reaction to Eddie's death, I think we'll definitely be seeing the lingering after effects of it, and alot of Mike's arc will kick off because of the aftermath of the vilification of Hellfire.
Only few people know that Eddie died to try protect Hawkins, Eddie was a role model for Dustin and Mike, but they're grieving him in COMPLETELY different ways
Dustin decides to honour him by taking up a similar style and proudly wearing his hellfire shirt, and is also probably trying to sway the town's opinion on Eddie and prove him innocent.
....But Mike seemingly decides that he DOESNT want to end up like Eddie anymore: dead and hated, known as a satanic freak.
Someone he idolised is now deceased, he doesn't know how to properly handle that fact, it's intimidating that someone he looked up to do much could be so hated, and in turn has caused the reaction from Mike that is basically 'if my idol is treated as such a horrible outcast, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps, where would that leave me?' he's feeling lost and hopeless, especially with the state Hawkins is in, so he probably decides the best thing to do is just blend in. Be normal.
It probably scares him that even merely his interest in DnD and all these other factors immediately make him a target, as far as townspeople believe- Mike is one of the kids who was close with a brutal serial killer, they probably think he's just as 'messed up as Eddie the freak was' for staying friends with someone who'd do such horrible things
I think Mike just wants to hide as much as he can right now, he has ALOT on his plate and doesn't need the rest of the town out to get him.
so if anyone asks: he'll probably say things like 'I didn't really know Eddie! I would never join a cult like that, I didn't know!' or something to try seperate his name from the hellfire club.
Mike will end up picking protecting himself and hiding his true identity and values/traits rather then living exposed and vulnerable; yet true to what he actually believes is right....And that is the opposite of what Dustin is doing,
Dustin is a proud hellfire member and friend of Eddie, he's picking what he thinks is right over self-preservation from the town, he's still wearing his battered shirt, now HE'S the one growing his hair out, he still adores Eddie and misses him (so does Mike probably, but he feels he CANT outwardly publicly show support or stand up for him)
I do wonder if this will cause some sort of tension between Dustin and Mike, because Dustin is doing the opposite and becoming more like Eddie instead of distancing himself from the hellfire name, he might feel betrayed that Mike 'gave up' on Hellfire, and maybe accuse him of not even caring about Eddie or his death?? Idk!!!!!!!!!! I feel like Dustin will also be going through it this season 😭😭😭
_____________________________________________
I do also think Mike will try to be clinging alot to El this season (I mean, before they inevitably break up which I believe will probably happen kinda early on if it actually happens at all)
this is also because just the idea of having a girlfriend corresponds to his idea of conformity and being 'normal'. He just wants to be a normal guy, his life is nothing out for the ordinary, he's not interested in satanic things like dnd and hellfire, he's just a normal person. A normal person who is PROBABLY a target of Vecna in season 5 😓
I believe his arc for this season will be trying to breakout of these notions of conformity in exchange for things he actually likes and is interested in, we saw him sort of branching out in season 4, but I think THIS time it's happening for real, and he'll end up fully embracing his own views and interests after some sort of emotional arc-which will also probably be part of the M*lev*n break up (not censored because I'm against them/hate them I just don't wanna clog the tag for others 😭😭) OR set off by the breakup
Throughout season 1 he was told he liked El, or others assumed it, so I think he assumed it aswell, they just never broke up because El ALSO thinks having a boyfriend is normal and expected, and because Mike was the boy she was closest to she assumed it was romantic feelings (and he kissed her in S1 which probably contributed to her assuming they were romantic feelings)
Alot of the people around her are also in relationships, and she watched alot of TV with happy romantic couples so she thinks it's more normal to HAVE a boyfriend then to NOT have one, I think Mike and El kinda stayed together because they think they're SUPPOSED to by these social standards,
They obviously care about each other alot, and mistook it as reasons to just stay together, she wants to be a normal girl because only being a superhero isnt good for her, she needs to be 'Jane Hopper' and not '011'. I do think she definitely needs to be single for awhile and find herself, even if her and Mike are to be endgame, she NEEDS at least some time to gain some experiences outside of living her life as a superhero, (Mike also needs character development outside of being 'Els Boyfriend's)
Which is why it was vital that her time with max in S3 existed, so El could realise her value and that there is a life outside having a boyfriend- I think Mike needs a similar moment aswell, a wake-up call of sorts where he can take a step back and consider maybe rather than letting society dictate his actions, he makes decisions for what he wants for himself ('we make our own rules')
_____________________________________________
If m*lev*n is endgame then sure that's great for them, but I genuinely don't know what big character arc could be in store for Mike that doesn't involve a breakup and themes of non-conforming, it doesn't even have to involve Byler endgame at all (although I AM a byler truther)
I think Mike learning that it's okay to let go of that romantic relationship if he doesn't feel that way anymore is a big step for his character, or atleast taking a break so he can work on himself, anything along those lines of actual development on himself rather then on his relationship- El and Mike have been romantically paired from the start, he needs to learn that it's OKAY to breakup with someone if thats what he feels is right, (side note: I DO believe El would/will be the one to breakup with him 😭)
I don't think he realises that he'll be able to stay friends with El, it's not 'shes my girlfriend or else she'll hate me for breaking up with her. No other options'
he doesn't want to lose her because he cares about her but he can't find a way to balance that romantic relationship alongside his other friendships. So I think for his character to develop they have to breakup, even temporarily, but obviously that's only my opinion if M*lev*n is endgame then oh well, it's endgame, but I think they would be a really awesome platonic duo and I'd like their relationship alot more if it was that way
______________________________________________
I think later in the season he'll realise that living this way not actually what he wants, and he doesn't want to give up who he is, or pretend to be something he's not- because he IS a nerd who likes DnD, and he does support Eddie, he cared alot about him because he idolised him, and i think season 5 is about him learning that that's okay and he doesn't have to feel so much pressure to conform by societal standards, bro needs a better grief process, forced conformity GOT HIS ASS 😭😭😭
What I'm trying to say is: all of this, and his new look is a safety net of sorts, he's still pretending to be something he's not because he feels he HAS to, otherwise it's dangerous for him in Hawkins because of hellfires reputation, but he's also acting this way because of other factors that I haven't really thought through yet LMAO
I believe season 5 will probably be him accepting those things about himself and embracing it, maybe also undoing his emotional repression along the way, I guess I would describe it as coming of age and I think if it's handled well it could be really beautiful in a way
OH MY GOD I RAMBLED SO MUCH AND IT ISNT EVEN A SOLID THEORY JUST A COLLECTION OF THOUGHTS😭
Sorry that was long and repetitive but uhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah..........anyways Mike Wheeler ily keep ur head up king please don't die in S5‼️‼️ stay safe‼️‼️

So, I started a new unstructured legacy gameplay... and my recent lookbook creation: Emilee Marsters is back as the founder! Komorebi Magazine recently did an interview with her, so I decided to post the issue for you. Sadly the second page of the interview is missing (because I'm laaaaaazy... there's also typos, but honestly fuck it). 👽

I just know that a dedicated, unstructured interview with Bart Nickerson would be approximately as unhinged as "Yuri Made Me Human" and in roughly the same ways

Nothing, just every time I sit around to think about ADHD I inevitably see all the abuse I've been through in front of my eyes again.
Now I just want to go cry in a corner.
The truth is that... I don't have any superpowers. I'm a 2x dropout. I cannot remember years of my life and the memories i have are extremely fragmented and difficult to put together. If I didn't have ADHD I wouldn't have been abused causing trauma that will never go away. I barely graduated high school - it took me 7 years instead of 5, I was too depressed to get out of bed at a certain point -and for some reason I thought I could do physics. And I can understand very difficult concepts, they don't fly over my head. But my country universities are completely unstructured. I got told "do these things in a three months time", so I couldn't keep up (and I also had chronic pain). I just cannot. I need a degree to keep going with my career but at this point I 100% believe it's over my possibilities, so I don't think I will ever reach the role of a SOC manager or a CISO.
I struggle daily to daily because all my energy goes to my job and when I'm done I'm exhausted. I have to make my boyfriend that does a physical heavy job (he is a factory worker) do 70% of the stuff because I just cannot. I do want to, but everything goes out of the window because I spent my whole day trying to focus. And he needs to double check because I forget. I forget to do laundry, I forget to take out the laundry and it then smells bad and I need to rewash it, then I forget it again. I don't miss my cats stuff because they are annoying.
While I'm actively monitoring I sometimes forget what I'm doing. And with sometimes I mean twice a day. Then I remembered and I have 10 alerts to analyse and then I get distracted again. It doesn't compromise the quality of my analysis for a miracle. Because I triple check everything, but I'm slower than my coworkers.
I called a customer yesterday because I contained his asset from the network (which is a very invasive operation) and I couldn't remember for the sake of my life if he disabled the email only or the whole o365 account. I still don't know. And it's a problem because I need to report to my coworkers and I will definitely look like an idiot if I gave them the wrong information. (They know about my ADHD and are very understanding)
I say"I need to reply to that email" and it's four months and now it's unacceptable to do this.
I recently failed a job interview because I forgot crucial information at the wrong time. I rely a lot on my notes and mindmaps which are great if you do intelligence analysis, but not that great when people expect you to remember everything.
I forgot to pay my water bill for 6 months because it got lost. I misplaced it, everyone thought it was being paid and it wasn't. (Idk how I didn't get my water shut off. Learned my lesson and now it get out directly from my bank account).
I forget to call my family for weeks because to me time makes no sense. Which is the reason why I struggle so much with my very necessary self study things. I need to get them done. I don't have the brain parts required to do that.
It's so awful, I get help but it cannot change the biology of my brain. I hope I will get some sort of "cure", although I rationally know it's impossible.
I'm scared to have kids because no way I'm condemning someone else to the amount of daily struggle I have. Especially my own child!
This is what living with ADHD actually looks like. Failing over and over again, and if you have good people around they will not mind that much, but I admit I wouldn't give me half of the slack my loved ones do to me. It's not the secret of any success, it doesn't make me "creative" or anything. In fact, I would have written how much stuff if I could finish what I start! How many things could I have done! I'd be a physics professor now. I'd have a PhD or something. I wouldn't have lost a decade of my life (1/3 of my life) to depression and anxiety.
Not that I have a bad job, I love my job, I earn more than I would have if I actually stayed in physics. even if things turned good for me that doesn't mean I don't miss what I could have been.

INDYCAR 101 PART 3 RESOURCE MASTERPOST: a 2023 guide to indycar by @thiemrossi
hi, hello, happy race week! If you want to start watching indycar this season but don't know where to start, this is for you. I couldn't cover everything, so I tried to focus on the drivers because there are so many unrecognized great personalities in indycar. If you have questions about anything on here or other stuff I didn't mention, feel free to ask me, I'm happy to help! This will also be multiple parts, so I'll link them all below
PART 1 PART 2 PART 3
This info was originally on slides, but I am just going to share it as text here. So, part 3 is a "how to find out more" masterpost.
Tumblr media
Where can I learn more about drivers? (Long-Form Content)
Off Track with Hinch & Rossi Podcast & Bonus content on Youtube
The Vibe: Long-form, unstructured, casual, funny, feels like 3 friends hanging out & talking
Weekly podcast (Thursdays) with best friends Alexander Rossi (current IndyCar driver) and James Hinchcliffe (former driver, current NBC commentator) where they discuss their lives, IndyCar, & other racing with a healthy dose of banter that descends into wonderful absolute chaos in the off season
Fun for new fans & a great way to get to know two key personalities in the series especially if you listen after a race weekend
But you will miss inside jokes (which make it more fun) if you haven’t listened to the old episodes, so I highly recommend going back and listening to those if you have time
Speed Street Podcast with Conor Daly & Joey Mulinaro (full episodes also on Youtube)
The Vibe: Long-form, semi-structured, funny, honest, & casual but also journalistic
Weekly podcast (Wednesdays) with friends Conor Daly (IndyCar Driver) & Joey Mulinaro (Comedian, Journalist) with commentary and interviews from all racing series
Great way to get to know Conor & the drivers he interviews plus get great insider insight into race weekends
Conor also just talks in a very entertaining way that I find very funny
Dinner with Racers Podcast
The Vibe: VERY long-form, unstructured, casual, personal
Hosts Sean and Ryan get to know various figures in racing through long form unstructured conversations over dinner
These guys REALLY get drivers to open up & are very funny with it
All of the IndyCar driver/series figures episodes are great I highly recommend them
Trackside Podcast/Radio Show
The Vibe: structured, journalistic, informative
Weekly Indianapolis Radio Show with NBC commentator Kevin Lee and IndyCar VP Curt Cavin with series news and driver interviews (also available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts)
They're probably the best series news podcast imo because they discuss things in an engaging way & give info we may not have heard yet
The Marshall Pruett Podcast: This Week in IndyCar
The Vibe: structured-ish, journalistic but can be casual
Weekly updates about the series, answering questions, driver interviews
Marshall has great insight but his podcasts can be hard to listen to because he rambles and talks slow, but the info is generally good & accurate

How to watch IndyCar
United States
All practices, qualifying, & races available live & on replay with a Peacock subscription
All races (except Toronto which is Peacock exclusive) are also broadcast live on network TV on NBC or USA network
Canada
TSN & TSN+ (this is new I think)
Australia
Stan Sport *looks* to be similar to peacock they’ll carry practice, qualifying, races & replays this season
UK
SkySportsF1 broadcasts most of the races but from what I understand they won’t cut to IndyCar if F1 post-race is still happening & have also heard they sometimes replay the F1 race over indycar :/
According to IndyCar, you can subscribe to IndyCar Live to watch practice and qualifying but no clue how much additional cost that would be or if it actually works
Latin America (except Belize and the Carribean Islands)
ESPN (unclear if they’ll carry all sessions)
Elsewhere:
Check here
if your country does not have a race broadcaster IndyCar live will probably be available & even if they do, it might still be available to watch practice and qualifying
Here's NBC's graphic with the race schedule but download the IndyCar app!!! it is the most helpful race weekend resource to have!! It has all the session times & driver radios are free to listen to during races if you make an account!! you can also listen to the radio feed of the whole race (at least in the US) & check championship standings live!! it's one thing this series does right!! download it!!

ever since i saw that performance video of johnny poll dancing, i keep thinking of him at a playground at those polls where you’re supposed to slide down on lmao
Hiii, oh my gosh I love that so much I need to see that, I love seeing them play on playgrounds its so cute I just want a vlog where they're doing nothing but playing at a playground and having lunch just super wholesome sweet activities. I want more unstructured chill vlogs those are just always my faves.
Okay so this is last time I mention boyfriend promise but last night we were talking about weight cause his grandma gets on him about being too thin. And I said as long as you feel okay than that's all that really matters and just do what feels best and I brought up how even though I'm plus size when I go to the doctor she tells me my blood work is perfect and she hasn't ever suggested I lose weight after my first visit only to at most maintain my weight and she just tells me I need to eat more and he said "you really do" and I said but its so much work and after taking care of my aunt I don't have the energy to cook most days and he said "well someone has to cook for you and I'll do it" and he's so sweet and I'm getting a little better at eating but he's really so sweet.
Also while I'm here i love the Just Trish podcast but every episode they talk negatively about their bodies and I just can't watch it for my mental well-being. I can only finish interview episodes. For me I never wanted to be skinny the first woman I saw as absolutely beautiful was my 4th grade teacher who was really tall, plus size and super pear shaped and to me I thought she was the ideal and I realized in 11th grade i never hated body I hated the way I was treated because of it. I'm actually so happy i grew into a tall plus sized pear shaped woman (not super pear shaped maybe one day) and constantly hearing that negative body image it's so draining to hear and honestly so annoying that I just skip those episodes entirely its always the ones with Trish and Oscar so I just watch the ones with Trish and a guest instead. Okay I feel like this is my first time in a while, i just kept yappin so I'm gonna stop here sorry for the paragraphs.

somehow it’s noon already!! but it’s been a productive morning. in my earlier research i’d been so focused on their first-gen numbers i somehow missed or didn’t fully register the fact that fully 40% of this school’s incoming students each year are transfer students from two-year colleges, which is obviously !!! a specific student population with unique needs that i should be prepared to address in whatever presentation i put together! so i did some initial research and reading in the secondary literature + then also reached out to two former advisees who transferred from community colleges and always had a lot to say about the types of support structures they wished they’d had. they were v happy to help so i set up calls with them tomorrow and on wednesday so i can pick their brains on how to effectively engage & support transfer students in undergraduate research. i made a promise to myself earlier in the week that i would only do rabbithole-style research if it felt like the topics would’ve been fascinating to me even if i didn’t have this interview, but i actually DO find this question super interesting and it’s also a fun excuse to reconnect with former students i haven’t caught up with in a while.
also man i just feel really happy and so much more like myself when i’m in this mode. my brain is WORKING again! i’m overflowing again with thoughts and ideas! i do think that trying a job outside of academia was a valuable life experience for me... and i do realize that this particular job is not representative of ALL non-academic jobs (if i didn’t have such a difficult manager i might’ve been able to stick it out here a lot longer). but also: i feel like you gotta pay attention to what energizes you vs. drains you in this life! and i am so energized by teaching, mentoring, program design, and doing any kind of research on those topics. i also feel my heart LEAPING at the thought of being immersed in a university community again. it’s funny because i get all the petty academic politics stories from macky and i knoooow how difficult & prickly & impossible academics can be but idk! as far as lightly dysfunctional work environments go, i find this form of dysfunction familiar and comforting! and i feel like the joy of working with students is sufficient recompense for the at-times harrowing experience of working with other academics lol. i’m just ready to be back in a place that i love and i’m really excited about this school in particular.
i was rereading the job posting earlier this week and thinking about how much more work it’s going to be than my current barely-anything job, which i know will probably cut into my loooong leisurely walks and my hours-long cooking sessions and my ability to lie around in bed for hours every day. it’s been nice in some ways to have so much time to do non-work things and to really get myself into good routines with cooking/exercising/etc, but i just DO NOT THRIVE when i have too much unstructured time and i am really, really starved for the casual friendly daily social contact i got from my old job. i feel like too much unstructured time = more time wasted because the time doesn’t feel valuable to me.
and idk i need people time! i need relationships with others! i need it both in a social energy and in an intellectual way... like, my conversations with students and the interpersonal conflicts you have to navigate and the unexpected things that come up in a teaching/mentoring relationship provide so much grist for the ol’ reflective mill. i feel like part of the reason i’ve felt sooooo bored and so annoyingly self-absorbed the past six or seven months is that i just don’t have enough INPUT you know?? i need all those interactions to spark new ways of thinking about something or new ideas or new interests to research. otherwise i’m just stuck in my own head, endlessly turning over my small cares and petty little resentments, without anything to challenge me or push me out of myself or force me to recalibrate the way i’m viewing a situation. anyway idk it’s all good data! as i am always telling students even bad or meh experiences can teach you something useful about who you are & what you need to thrive!!

CDC Rigs Its Own Monkeypox Case Reports by Not Including Questions on Airborne Transmission
CDC Rigs Its Own Monkeypox Case Reports by Not Including Questions on Airborne Transmission
By Lambert Strether of Corrente.
This short and sweet post will have two parts. First, I will show that the CDC Monkeypox case report form omits amy questions about airborne transmission. Then I will show why that’s a bad idea, inexplicable given CDC’s previous documentation on this point.
Caveat: I am not saying that “Monkeypox is airborne.” To my knowledge, we don’t have epidemiological studies of the same quality we have with Covid; the kind with seat charts and diagrams of airflow (as in the famous Skagit Valley chorus study, but with many others); that is the kind of evidence I rate highest, most of all because such studies show me how to imagine the ground and what to do. However, we do have sufficient information not to rule out airborne transmission altogether, as I will show. That CDC does this a priori — and at the start of what we all hope is not the start of another global pandemic on the order of Covid — is mind-boggling, or would be mind-boggling if we had not, by this time, had plenty of experience with how “The Centers for Disease” operates. They have form. * * *
First, let’s look at the CDC case report, “OMB No. 0920-1011.” We have the “Short Form,” designed to be filled out by state or local health officials. We also have the “Data Dictionary Codebook” (same OMB number), which documents the database fields that will be populated by Short Form data entry. Both are embedded in the Appendix to this post. (The name “Short Form” suggests the existence of a “Long Form,” probably populating database fields unused by the Short Form, but if such a form exists, I haven’t seen it.
From transmission, the key section in the Short From is “History of Possible Exposures.” Here it is:
Tumblr media
As you can see, the structured portion of the form (i.e. checkboxes and radio buttons) does not permit any representation of airborne transmission (certainly not a “fleeting contact” such as has occurred with Covid); airborne tranmission is ruled out a priori[1].
An interviewer desperate to somehow cram information about airborne transmission into the form could use the following text fields (“location of exposure,” “additional details”):
Tumblr media
However, exactly because such data would be unstructured and unstandardized, it’s not likely to make it into any reports generated from the database.
We now turn to the Data Dictionary Codebook. As you can see, fields on the Short Form are mapped to fields in a database. Here is an example of how the documentation is structured:
Tumblr media
As you can see, the basic structure is a series of field/value pairs, mutually exclusive (ORed radio buttons) or not (ANDed checkboxes). Hilariously, I found this field while searching for “air” (“prairie”); no such luck. “Prairie Dog” strongly suggests that the Data Dictionary dates from no later than 2003, when “All people infected with monkeypox in this outbreak became ill after having contact with pet prairie dogs. The pets were infected after being housed near imported small mammals from Ghana. This was the first time that human monkeypox was reported outside of Africa.” But no doubt our thinking, and our fields, have been updated since that time.
We can also see from this example that the CodeBook contains many fields that are not used in the Short Form. Here is another example:
Tumblr media
The word “mask” does not appear in the Short Form.
I scanned the entire codebook, and I can’t find any fields that would store data relevant to airborne transmission in the general case. (You can check my work in the Appendix.) For example, the famous Japanese 3Cs — closed spaces (with poor ventilation), crowded places (with many people nearby), and close-contact settings (such as close-range conversations), are highly structured and would lend themselves well to representation in a database. Here are more suggestions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We can conclude, then, that CDC simply is not enquiring into airborne transmission of Monkeypox. They have ruled it out, a priori. However, if you go by existing literature — including from the CDC itself — there’s plenty of reason consider it a real possibllity. To that literature we now turn. * * *
First, from KHN, “CDC Posts, Then Deletes, Guidance On Airborne Risks Of Monkeypox“:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it removed the recommendation that travelers worried about monkeypox should wear a mask because it was causing confusion. Although public health officials have been linking many of the cases in this outbreak to close sexual contacts, monkeypox can also be spread through the air for short distances.
This is one of KHN’s handy wrap-ups. From the New York Times, “Monkeypox Can Be Airborne, Too.” So why not collect data on airborne transmision of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
Then there’s Nature, “How does monkeypox spread? What scientists know.” What we “know” seems solid:
Several studies… show that few people contract the disease from an infected household member with whom they didn’t have sexual contact. This finding, paired with the data about viral load, suggests that respiratory droplets and airborne particles probably aren’t the primary transmission route… If corroborated by further research [which CDC has decided not to do, because reasons], it could call into question whether people should isolate for the entire duration of infection, which might be difficult because the illness seems to take up to a month to resolve, she adds.
But what we “know” melts into air:
Even if the virus can be sexually transmitted, it’s unclear how large of a role this mode of transmission has, compared with simply being in close, skin-to-skin contact with a person or inhaling their respiratory particles [gawd, they can never say “aerosols”] — which also occur during sex.
Put more pointedly, during sex — hear me out — people share air, so any theory of skin-to-skin contact has an enormous confounding factor. So why not collect data on airborne transmision of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
Now let’s do a (frankly cursory) review of the literature on airborne transmission of monkeypox.
CDC, “Smallpox & Other Orthopoxvirus-Associated Infections.” Here is CDC scrubbing it:
Tumblr media
CDC, “Hospital Respiratory Protection Program Toolkit“:
Tumblr media
CDC, “Potential Exposure to Person with Confirmed Human Monkeypox Infection” (via):
Tumblr media
CDC, “Monkeypox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo“:
Tumblr media
Coughing and sneezing is possibly droplets (loogies, ballistic). Talking (like singing) certainly includes aerosols, i.e. transmission is airborne.
But wait, there’s more from the CDC:
Tumblr media
GOV.UK, “High consequence infectious diseases (HCID)“:
Tumblr media
And finally, Clinical Infectious Diseases, “The Clinical Characteristics of Human Monkeypox, and Risk Factors for Severe Disease.” Figure 1 lists the upper and lower respiratory tract symptoms — arguably related to breathing, not touch — the researchers studied.:
Tumblr media
Oddly, the CDC’s “Short Form” has eliminated all these symptoms, even coughing:
Tumblr media
Again, why not collect data on airborne transmision of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
* * *
In list form:
1) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
2) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
3) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
4) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
5) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
6) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
7) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
8) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
9) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
10) Why won’t CDC collect data on airborne transmission of monkeypox, if only to rule it out?
And so forth. One hesitates to use the word “farce” for CDC”s “science” here, if only because stronger words come to mind.
NOTES
[1] CDC might not be so strong on transmission, but hoo boy! Did they lavish attention on data structures for gender and race (although not, naturally, proxies for class like income or education level).

Psychopathology, Ch 3 pt. 2
Identify the three major types of clinical interviews.
Unstructured interview: a clinical interview in which the clinician adopts their own style of questioning rather than following any standard format.
advantage: spontaneity and conversational style
disadvantage: lack of standardization
Semistructured interview: a clinical interview in which the clinician follows a general outline of questions designed to gather essential information but is free to ask them in any order and to branch off in other directions.
Structured interview: a clinical interview that follows a preset series of questions in a particular order.
advantage: highest level of reliability in reaching diagnostic judgments
Most interviews cover these topics:
Identifying data = This is information regarding the client's sociodemographic characteristics: address and telephone number, marital status, age, gender, racial/ethnic characteristics, religion, employment, family composition, and so on.
Description of the presenting problem(s) = How does the client perceive the problem? What troubling behavior, thoughts, or feelings are reported? How do they affect the client's functioning? When did they begin?
Psychosocial history = This is information describing the client's developmental history: educational, social, and occupational history and early family relationships.
Medical/psychiatric history = The clinician elicits the client's history of medical and psychiatric treatment & hospitalizations: Is the present problem a recurrent episode of a previous problem? If yes, how was the problem handled in the past? Was treatment successful? Why or why not?
Medical problems/medication = This refers to a description of present medical problems and present treatment, including medication. The clinician is alert to ways in which medical problems may affect the presenting psychological problem. For example, drugs for certain medical conditions can affect people's moods and general levels of arousal.
Mental status examination: a structured clinical assessment to determine various aspects of a client’s mental functioning. Typically includes the following features:
appearance = appropriateness of attire and grooming
mood = prevailing emotions displayed during the interview
level of attention = ability to maintain focus and attend to the interviewer's questions
perceptual and thinking processes = ability to think clearly and discern reality from fantasy
orientation = knowing who they are, where they are, and the present date
judgment = ability to make sound life decisions on a day-to-day basis
Describe the two major types of psychological tests – intelligence tests and personality tests – and identify examples of each type.
Psychological tests are structured methods of assessment used to evaluate reasonably stable traits, such as intelligence and personality. Tests of intelligence, such as the Wechsler scales, are used for various purposes in clinical assessment, including determining evidence of intellectual disability or cognitive impairment and assessing cognitive strengths & weaknesses.
Objective personality tests, such as the MMPI, use structured items to measure psychological characteristics or traits (ex. masculinity, femininity, anxiety, depression). These tests are considered objective in the sense that they make use of a limited range of possible responses to items and are based on an empirical, or objective, method of test construction.
Objective tests are easy to administer and have high reliability because the limited response options permit objective scoring. However, they may be limited by underlying response biases.
Projective personality tests, such as the Rorschach and TAT, require individuals to interpret ambiguous stimuli, based on the belief that a subject's answers shed light on that person's unconscious processes. However, the reliability and validity of projective techniques continue to be debated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Objective tests: self-report personality tests that can be scored objectively and that are based on a research foundation.
Objective personality tests, such as the MMPI and MCMI, use structured items to measure psychological characteristics or traits (ex. masculinity, femininity, anxiety, depression). These tests are considered objective in the sense that they make use of a limited range of possible responses to items and are based on an empirical, or objective, method of test construction.
Objective tests are easy to administer and have high reliability because the limited response options permit objective scoring. However, they may be limited by underlying response biases.
Tumblr media
Projective tests: psychological tests that present ambiguous stimuli onto which the examinee is thought to project their personality and unconscious motives.
Projective personality tests, such as the Rorschach and TAT, require individuals to interpret ambiguous stimuli, based on the belief that a subject's answers shed light on that person's unconscious processes. However, the reliability and validity of projective techniques continue to be debated.
Describe the use of neuropsychological tests.
Neuropsychological assessment: measurement of behavior or performance that may be indicative of underlying brain damage or defects.
Neuropsychological tests are formally structured tests used to identify possible neurological impairment or brain defects. The Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery uncovers cognitive skill deficits that are suggestive of underlying brain damage.
Tumblr media
Identify methods of behavioral assessment and describe the role of a functional analysis.
Behavioral assessment: the approach to clinical assessment that focuses on the objective recording and description of problem behavior.
Methods of behavioral assessment include behavioral interviewing, self-monitoring, use of analogue or contrived measures, direct observation, and behavioral rating scales. The behavioral examiner may conduct a functional analysis, which is used to identify antecedents and consequences of problem behaviors.
Self-monitoring: the process of observing or recording one’s own behaviors, thoughts, or emotions.
Describe the role of cognitive assessment and identify two examples of cognitive measures.
Cognitive assessment: measurement of thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes that may be associated with emotional problems.
Cognitive assessment focuses on the measurement of thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes to help identify distorted thinking patterns. Specific methods of assessment include the use of a thought record or diary and the use of rating scales such as the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire and the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale.
What a thought diary is meant to identify:
the situation in which the emotional state developed
the automatic or disruptive thoughts that passed through the client's mind
the type or category of disordered thinking that the automatic thought(s) represented
a rational response to the troublesome thought
the emotional outcome
Tumblr media
Identify methods of physiological measurement.
Measures of physiological functioning including heart rate, blood pressure, galvanic skin response, muscle tension, and brain wave activity. Brain imaging and recording techniques, such as EEG, CT scans, PET scans, and MRI and fMRI, probe the inner workings and structures of the brain.
Physiological assessment: measurement of physiological responses that may be associated with abnormal behavior.
Describe the role of sociocultural aspects of psychological assessment.
Tests that are reliable and valid in one culture may not be so when used with members of another culture, even when they are translated accurately. Examiners also need to protect against cultural biases when evaluating people from other ethnic or cultural backgrounds. For example, they need to ensure they do not label behaviors as abnormal that are normative within the person's own cultural or ethnic group.
