SIX HOURS UNTIL DAWN
Synthya closed her eyes, relaxing in the bathtub, taking a deep breath. She finally had her long-awaited moment of calm and peace where she could just chill and log off from the real world, resting in this nice and warm bath. At first, she had been listening to some music, various genres, her headphones in her ears but she eventually took them off and let herself slid in the water, bubbles coming up to the surface when she breathed out, just listening to the silence. It was really relaxing and after some time to herself, she was convinced she would be ready to fully and truly enjoy this winter getaway, looking forward to spending more time together with Josh. After what had been probably like a minute underwater, she emerged, gasping softly for air as she wiped her eyes when suddenly, the door slammed shut and she turned around with a jump. All the candles installed around the bathtub had gone out and she thought of a simple draft that would have caused the door to slam so abruptly, but the windows were all closed in the room, and she didn't think she had left the door open. On the contrary, even though she didn't lock it, she remembered having closed it. She wrung out her hair.
“Hello? Josh...? Guys?” Synthya called but her question was met by religious sience. She sat there, chills aready appearing on her shoulders, just waiting for a response, looking around, confused and after a dozen of seconds, she stood up and got out of the bath, wrapping herself in a towel. Upon walking to the chair where she had folded her clothes, she found nothing and frowned. This was getting weird. She didn’t understand if this was another of Chris’ prank, maybe Josh was involved in that one, or if she had just put her clothes somewhere else and somehow forgot. She was really trying to think of the possible scenarios as she looked in the bathroom, see if it was just her mind playing tricks on her or if they were actually gone and in which case, someone had in fact taken them away, for an unknown reason. She sighed and gave up on finding her close anywhere nearby. She secured the towel wrapped around her body and ventured outside of the bathroom, taking her phone to use the flashlight as she walked to Hannah’s room, thinking of grabbing a bunch of clothes in last resort because maybe walking around, naked, with only a towel wasn’t the best but when the door to her late best friend’s room turned out to be closed, she swore under her breath, resigning himself to wandering around like this.
Upon taking a better look around, she realized there were ballons tied to the stair’s guard railings with arrows drawn on it with a black marker pen or something, indicating a direction. After she saw this, she grew more annoyed than scared as it started to really look like a stupid prank and she figured that if she played along, she would get to the end of it quicker, so she climbed down the stairs, following the ballons, calling out to Chris, Josh and Ashley as she wandered in the empty living room. As she came by the turn off TV, she heard a sudden and very brief high-pitched squeal and jumped on her feet but when she looked at the screen, there was nothing. It was just pitch black. She shot a last gance in the room and walked away, climbing down the last fight of stairs and the ballons led her to the room before the basement, lighting her way with her phone’s flashlight and she arrived in front of the cinema room, frowning in confusion. The double door was wide open.
“Guys? Are you there?” She asked again, as she walked in the room, feeling a little more uneasy. “Hey, come on, now. I want my clothes back. Can someone please answer to me? This is not cool!” She screamed when the door slid shut behind her and she stepped away when suddenly, a distorted voice came from the speakers set on the sides of the screen.
“Hello Synthya. Looking for me?” She frantically looked around, getting freaked out, not so sure it was a mere prank anymore. “I don’t think you’ll have much luck by looking, Synthya. You’re only going to see what I want you to see.”
“What the hell… Josh, Chris… Ashley, if this is you, it’s not funny anymore.” The only response she got was the weird voice laughing at her and carrying on.
“I have quite a lot to show you. Open your eyes.”
“Oh my god.” She stared at the screen showing her relaxing in the bathtub. She swallowed harshly, feeling a lump form in her stomach.
“She’s quite beautiful, isn’t she. A beautiful bathing bird… do you think she has any idea what lies ahead? Do you think these were the last happy moments of this creature’s life?”
“Why are you showing this to me...?” Her voice was shaking.
“Why are you watching?” The voice retorted and she glanced behing her at the projector. When she turned around, back to the screen, she had the horror to see Ashley and Josh, tied up on a wall, a moving circular saw mounted on tracks, cutting Josh in half, screaming at the top of his lungs.
“Josh!” She cried out, putting her hand on the back of the chair in front of her. “OH MY GOD! Josh—" She was cut off by her crying and fell to her knees, sobbing as she looked away, unable to watch her boyfriend being murdered, his guts falling from his torso. She couldn't take anymore and when the weird psycopath spoke again, she slowly stood up, her cheeks wet from the tears.
“I’m going to give you ten seconds… Nine…”
“No, no, no no no...” She walked back to the door, trying to get her shit together but she couldn’t help but cry. She couldn’t believe Josh was dead.
“Eight. Seven.”
“Please no.” She yelled, her face distorted with tears, grief and utter fear. Suddenly, someone entered the room and she let out a scream, trying to get away from the psycho
“Synthya. Sy-yn?” He titled his head, cracking his neck, holding a gas bottle by his side.
“You killed, Josh! You fucking monster!” Synthya growled, frowning in anger and without thinking twice, she reached out to a vase by her side, and threw it hard at the mysterious man who protected himself with the gas canister and she took to her heels, running towards the adjacent room. It was a bedroom. Holding her towel in place, she closed the door behind her and lit the room with her phone to which she clung desperately. She knew that hiding here would be stupid and he would find her on the spot, so she went to jump over the bed and at the same moment the psycho opened the door and slowly walked in but as she was frightened and panicking, she didn’t lose any time and rushed out, running down the hallway and down the steps to the basement in a hurry. She saw many spots where she could hide but it wasn’t very clever as she was sure he would find her, so she kept running in the basement, breathing heavily. She ran into a door with no handle and whimpering, she looked around and pulled down a wine rack, rolling to the side before it fell on her and pinned her to the ground, to the psycho’s mercy to do whatever he had planned to do to her. She noticed a handle had fallen from above the rack, she crawled and grabbed it before standing up and hastily open the door and slam her behind her the moment he came right behind her. Her fingers found the door hatch and she locked the door. He slipped his arm through the opening, trying to get it open but she managed to close it, screaming.
Synthya caught her breath and turned around, walking away to the door at the other end of the room. She turned the handle, but the door remained closed, so she started to slam into the door with her shoulder, groaning. Her sole hope of saving herself from this madman was to manage to open this stupid door and after just one hard bump of her shoulder, the door gave in and she fell as on the other side, the floor was no more so she fell one level below and hit her head, wincing. She brought her hand to her forehead and there was barely any blood, so she sucked it up, grabbing her phone to light her way through the concrete rubble and stood up, chills running down her back. She kept on going, rubbing her arm, trembling slightly from the ambient cold. Reaching the end of the hallway, she found herself thinking between continuing to run down the hallway on her left or hide beneath an old elevator shaft on her right. She ultimitaly chose the second option and jumped down, turning the flashlight off and closing her eyes, swallowing harshly, sticking to the wall as much as possible so he wouldn’t notice her. When she heard footsteps approaching, she held her breath, keeping her eyes shut, biting her lips so hard she felt the metallic taste of blood in her mouth.
“Here little kitty. Here pussy pussy.” He paused, turning around, looking for her but when he swore, she knew she had saved herself, at least for now. “Fuck!” She waited to hear the footsteps receding and she breathed out, cuping her face in her hands, silently crying, releasing all the pressure, her body shook, but not from cold, from all the tension and stress this had put her through. She had lost Josh, seen him get torn apart and was then chased and mocked by a fucking psychopath and she had no idea what he wanted to do to her, but given what he did to Josh, it wouldn’t have been anything pleasant.

Lodge’s basement, 3:05 AM
FOUR HOURS UNTIL DAWN
She crawled through a rather long and narrow air vent, scratching her elbows and knees against the surface, so much that they were covered in a very thin layer of blood. Synthya lit the room beyond the opening with her phone’s flashlight, checking the area she was setting foot in before sitting and pushing the vent with her feet and carefully getting out, looking around her fearfully, worried that the psycho would find her there too, and the fact that just at first glance, she noticed it looked like a sort of workshop didn’t help her calm down, but she couldn’t hear anyone so she let out a small sigh of relief and began to explore the premises. Anything she could learn on this crazy dude would be helpful. Glancing behind her, she noticed a cork board with a map but only the top corners were pinned on it. She frowned, approaching slowly and she lifted the bottom corner and found plans of Josh getting cut in half with little annotations to the sides of the drawings.
"What?" She mumbled. “This can’t be right…”
Little arrows were showing various areas of the drawings, noting head hole, pig blood and latex model. She was quite dumbfounded and stepped away, shaking her head. She didn’t understand. She had witnessed Josh’s gruesome death. Synthya took a deep breath and walked to a desk. She ignored the circular saw put on it and the numerous papers pinned on the wall and opened a drawer, grabbing a file stored inside. She put it on the desk and opened it, and inside, she found Josh’s medical records from his time at the hospital from exactly a year ago, everything was in there. The young woman couldn’t quite understand why this psycho would have all these confidential documents. She took a step away, shuffling her feet to a shelf where she found a phone just lying there. When she turned it on, she saw a photo of herself as the lockscreen’s wallpaper and realized it was Josh’s phone. It was a picture of her in a black dressing gown and only he had this picture. She unlocked it, of course it was Josh’s, it didn’t even have a password and she scrolled through a rather heated conversation he had had with his therapist, well, Josh was being quite heated and angry, telling Dr Hill off until he just stopped answering the shrink’s texts. The latter seemed worried and concerned for him, talking about a “plan” he had told him about and which he advised him against. Synthya stared at the phone, not really understanding what this was about. All she could think about was that Josh was dead, murdered in a horrific way and this asshole made a whole game of it. She couldn’t help but hear Josh’s screaming to death and she shook her head, putting down the phone.
She walked across the room in a heavy silence, now finding a sort of memorial cork board with pictures of Hannah and Beth and little notes here and there. One that stood out was NEVER FORGET, written in red ink. Synthya let out a heavy and trembling sigh and she walked away, following a corridor and climbed down a flight of stairs. She approached a door, her head right at the level of the opening and she got shivers down her spine, reflexively recoiling, silencing her breathing and widening her eyes in fear as she watched the psycho leaning over a table, his back to the door, looking at a bunch of CCTV footage of all around the lodge and the property. She gulped and walked, scared that he would see her. Maybe he was looking for her on all those cameras and it freaked her out that she was right behind the door, so close from him and he had no idea. Down the hallway, she found a voice recorder left alone on a table and pressed the play button, wondering what it was about. It sounded like the psycho rehearsing a speech until the voice changed, as if the voice changer had been turned off and her heart almost missed a beat when she heard Josh’s voice. She turned it off instantly.
“Holy shit… what… no… This is insane…” She shook her head, taking a shaky breath, running a weak hand through her black hair.
There was no way Josh was behind all this. She saw him die. She saw it. It was crazy and fucking impossible. Even though, deep down, she knew it made too much sense for it all to be just a coincidence, but she wouldn’t admit it to herself. She didn’t want it to be true. She couldn’t understand why he would do all this, and why he would put her through this, chasing her down in the basement. It wasn’t him. It was just impossible. As she walked to the stairs, she glanced at the door worriedly and climbed up the steps, hoping to finally find a way out of there, and maybe some clothes on the way because she wasn’t sure she could make it out in the cold with barely a towel on. She was freezing. The first door she encountered was locked so she walked to another one down the hallway. A double door looking somehow resembling that of the high school cafeteria. There was mess behind that double door; furnitures broken and knocked over, stuff spilled on the floor. She found a camera set to the side, a light on the floor and a dummy on a chair, with an awful clown mask on its head. In another context, it wouldn’t have been this creepy and strange to see a dummy dressed up in her clothes. All the clues and things she found would have led her to think it was Josh’s doing but she really had a hard time accept what was probably the truth. All she had hoped for this weekend was to spend time with Josh and everything had been ruined. She thought of just undressing the dummy and get her clothes back but when she saw her bag hanging from the doorknob, she only took her scarf back, because it was her mother’s and she refused to just leave it here. She suddenly felt a hand grab her ankle and she let out a yelp, stepping away, looking down at a vent on the bottom of the wall.
“Mike!” She kneeled down, holding the towel in place. “What are you doing down here? There’s a g—” She sighed in relief. “Thank god you found me.”
“It’s okay. You’re okay.” He whispered, his eyes going from the bruise on her head, her red eyes and bloody lips. She nodded, trying to hammer this into her head. For now, she was okay. Wandering around in a dark and scary place was better than being actively followed by a psychopath.
“I don’t understand… How did you get here? How did you find me?” She wondered.
“There’s some fucking maniac up here on the mountain—”
“Yeah, I’ve noticed.” She said softly, cutting him off.
“He lives in this like, web of tunnels… I was down there trying to ger out and I found this grate and saw you.” He explained.
“This guy you’re talking about… he attacked me. Chased me down in the basement and he… he showed me these videos too,” Her voice started breaking and she glanced behind her, terrified that he would somehow hear her and get her. “and one of them showed Josh being killed… just… ripped apart by this huge fucking sawblade…”
“Jesus Christ!”
“I think he is living down here, and whoever the hell he is, he’s obsessed with Hannah and Beth. But here’s the crazy thing: I found these plans, like, blueprints for a crazy machine just like the one Josh was in, but it’s fake… it was for a dummy. That—” She stared in the void and exclaimed. “Tha means Josh might not be dead!”
“Synthya, hey, slow down…”
“Also, I found his phone, like, on a shelf, just lying there… there was a whole conversation with his doctor, and… he was talking about a “plan” that was like, a “bad idea” and now he’s dead!”
“What the fuck is going on around here… There’s a door here, it won’t open.” He showed a door on his left, behing the one from which her bag was hanging. “Can you unlock it from your side?”
“Wait a sec’.” She stood up, grabbing her backpack and opened the door. She removed a wooden plank across the door Mike was talking about and opened it.
“Hey…”
“Jeez, you look like hell.” She observed, stepping in the room with him. She must have looked like hell too with the blood on her face and her eyes all red from crying.
“Nice to see you too.” He watched her walk to the back, behind a shelf, putting her backpack to the ground. “What are you doing?”
“Well actually, the towel didn’t turn out to be the best outfit for fighting off killer maniacs, you know? And I’m gonna turn into a fucking ice cube. Do you mind? Mike?” She gestured her hand for him to turn around just so she could change with some of the spare clothes she had packed.
“Oh. Uh, right, my bad.” He nodded, looking away. She changed into a plain T-shirt, a red-hooded jacket, a pair of black jogging pants and tied the drawstring at the waist and put on her dark sneakers. She also tied the scarf around her neck.
“Okay. Done. Let’s put things to bed.”
“Amen to that.” She picked up her phone, checking how much battery was left and she nodded to herself. Her phone wasn't going to die any time soon. They barely took a few steps when they heard muffled voices coming from a distance.
“What was that?”
“Is that crying?” They glanced at each other in confusion and walked to the door across from the one she had opened for Mike and put their shoulders against the door and gave a heavy knock. It gave in and opened to a room plunged in the dark, but they could perceive chains hanging from the ceiling and two people seated at a table near a light on the floor. Synthya was about to light up the room with her flashlight to see who it was but a spotlight on the ceiling came on and she recognized Chris and Ashley, tied to the chairs. Two sawblades were hanging right above their heads. Synthya saw them look to the side as Ashley cried and she saw the psycho walk towards them.
“Noo! No no no! Get away!” Chris had a gun in his free hand and tried to shoot him down, but nothing came out except some drops of blood, which was probably fake.
“Oh Chris… Oh Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris.” He shook his head, walking around the table.
“What the fuck?!” Chris looked at the gun. Mike and Synthya approached, having no idea what was going on. It all seemed so off.
“Oh, you’ve heard of blanks before. I mean, really?” When the psycho took off his mask and revealed who was actually underneath, Synthya froze, staring at Josh in disbelief. She was torn, wanting to scream and cry but not being able to produce any sound for some reason. She had to face it and admit to herself that he was indeed the one behind all this but in spite of everything, she still didn’t want to believe it.
“…Josh?” Chris spoke. Synthya snapped out of her thoughts and staring when Mike put his hand on her shoulder for a second and they walked closer to the table while Josh laughed, hysterically, walking in a circle around the table, and smiling as if there was something hilarious.
‘Oh, very good! Every one of you! You got my name! And after all you’ve been through! Good, good-good-good. I mean how does that feel?” Mike and Synthya went to Chris and Ashley, undoing their ties to free them. Whatever it was with Josh, something wasn’t right. Synthya knew he hadn’t been doing well, for a long time but she had never seen him like this, so erratic. “Right? How does it feel? Do you enjoy feeling terrorized? Humiliated? I mean, panicked? All those emotions that my sisters got to feel once one year ago! Only guess what? They didn’t get to laugh it off! No! Nope! No no no! They’re gone!”
“I don’t know if you noticed this, Josh, but none of us are laughing.” Mike retorted bitterly.
“Oh come, come-come-come-come. Why the long faces? Come on. It’s good to get the heart racing every now and then, right? And race they did, I mean, every one of you, just pitter-pat-pitter-pat! I hope you appreciated my little phantasmagorical spectacle! I mean no detail too small! No opportunity missed! It was such a delight to play the puppet master to- to all of your Pavlovian panic! And all that gore? I mean, gore, there was gore galore!! Fake bodies… I mean, God, that shit was expensive! And no retakes! Nope, nope, nope, only double takes! Oh, you should have seen your faces; Hook line and sinker. For every little stinker!” He cheered.
“Josh…” He cut her off, pointing her finger at her and laughing as he started talking.
“And you really had to run away! I mean, you hopped away like a rabbit and poof, you were gone! I wanted to put you away from all this, but nope! Nope!”
“You knew I would run; I mean… Of course, I would. Oh, God, I am sorry, I should have been more there for you... you're crying out for help, Josh... You wanted me to catch you, didn’t you?”
“Oh sure, I’m totally just crying out for help.” He retorted. “Help me! Oh, help me! Help help! Come on! And you’re so so so so sorry, right? Come on! It was just for fun! I mean you got a little of egg on your face, right? Nobody got hurt—”
“What are you talking about you ass hat?” Mike spoke. “Jessica is fucking dead!”
“What?”
“Did you hear me?! Jessica is dead… and you’re gonna fucking pay you dick!” He walked towards Josh, and Synthya yelled at Mike when he hit him hard on the head with the gun in his hand. She kneeled down by Josh’s side as he lied unconscious on the ground, and she let out a heavy sigh. This was definitely not the chill weekend she had hoped for.

listen i love until dawn as much as the next person but oh my god are they are a horrible group of friends
i'd much rather be around the awkward ass gen z quarry cast
like holy shit
dylan will literally die for his "work friend" that has a crush on the same boy as him
meanwhile ashley is like "oh my crush? who was put in what we thought was a horrible life or death situation and made a split decision? sorry bro, have fun being beheaded by a monster"
just omg the until dawn cast is so ruthless. literally the only one i would ever be friends with is sam, matt, and MAYBE chris if he's on his best behavior

authors note;; hii ! I heard about this game sooo long before it came out and im SO happy its getting hyped. i love nick, he's mine by the way.
pairing; nick furcillo x reader
pronouns; she/her reader
warnings; moma witch, haven't checked for grammar mistakes.
Tumblr media
summer had been a long two months with nothing but insecurities and jealousy on nick's end. watching y/n spending so much time with someone like jacob really got his eyes rolling. were they flirting? were they friends? there is literally no way of telling.
i mean, of course jacob has his obsession with his want-it-to-be-more-summer-fling, but y/n is absolutely stunning. the prettiest girl at Hacketts quarry - if not the entire world. she is also so, so, very kind ... to nick, especially. is she just being friendly?
jacob has the great idea to steal the rotor arm to the car they were supposed to leave in. he told y/n he would do it to get more time with Emma. or, well, he didn't say that specifically ... but it's true. that is what he wanted.
"jacob, thats ridiculous. you seriously think one more night will make her change her mind about you?"
"hey, you never know. will she be able to resist all of this-?" he said as he (palms up) put both his hands to the side of his chest before lowering them at a steady pace (hopefully you understand what im describing. if not, try it and youll understand).
"- hell no. no chance."
y/n let out a chuckle at his gestures, putting her hand up to make him stop. while doing this, she shook her head and looked down - this only lasted for a couple of quick seconds.
"whatever you say, champ."
over the summer, y/n and jacob had grown incredibly close. jacob did and said so many cringe things that would normaly give her the ick completely - but he was such a sweetheart .. pretty funny, too. you see, when someone you grow to enjoy the company of continuously does cringey stuff - it turns funny, in a way? charming, maybe? but she could never see him as more than a friend.
"don't you shame me for my summer desires,"
"summer?" y/n interrupted, along with a chuckle.
"because i know you, l/n. you've got that thing for nick, and you know you wouldn't hate another night with the guy." he didn't care about her interruptions or her jokes. he knew he could make emma see and understand what he is: boyfriend material.
"i've got no such thing. for anyone."
"oh, but you definitely do." he said, pulling the rotor arm.
"shut up. focus on that rotor arm of yours."
-
later, the group was sitting around the fire, ready to play truth or dare. ryan didn't even want to be out here - he told the group multiple times that the way to have a party would be to listen to Mr. H and stay inside. it was a full moon too, and they should be (at least a little) scared after all the stories he has told - which includes the full moon.
the game was boring for a few rounds, before someone decided to spice it up. it was first done by a dare from emma, asking ryan to kiss either dylan or kaitlyn. it was an obvious pick on his end: dylan.
"alrighty, who should i pick.." ryan said, before he was quickly interrupted by kaitlyn, letting him know that she, along with jacob had not been picked yet.
"Kaitlyn, truth or dare?" ryan spoke, looking over at Kaitlyn. He wasn't exactly the coolest one in the group, but truth or dare can't be that hard to ace.
"Truth. Definitely truth."
"what do you want to be when you're grown up?"
"emma?"
"dare."
"you have to kiss.. jacob.. or.. nick."
emma went on to choose nick, and y/n was immediately set out. emma knew as well as the nsxt person that she was definitely interested in nick - so why would she do that? i mean, theyre not the best of friends but come on. thats just mean.
not only did she kiss nick, but she sat down on his lap and held his head. he even wrapped his arm around her. was he interested in her? emma? not y/n? jacob had said countless of times that by the end of summer, y/n would have nick nailed down like a foot trapped in a bear trap. his expressions didn't always make sense, but he tried. but he was also wrong, because nick seemed to enjoy that kiss more than jacob would.
"thank you, nick." emma said, walking backwards away from the man. y/n looked down on her feet, sitting on her hands. nick looked down too, but glanced over at her - but only for a second. he knew he had messed it up, and if there was any chance that she liked him? it was slim now. it was a good kiss, but he closed his eyes for a reason. he closed his eyes to imagine someone else sitting on his lap and holding the back of his head - thats why when he opened them again: he looked so baffled.
emma's stupid comment about how good nick was at kissing didn't help much. y/n quickly got up from her seat, walking off.
jacob got rather angry, making some comments before he walked off too.
"I guess I should probably ... go after him." emma said. "you should probably go find n/n." and without any hesitation: nick got up and walked after her.
walking around the forest alone, y/n found herself getting more and more freaked out. she thought she could hear an old womans voice saying "she took everything from me". it might've just been her imagination, seeing as how scared of the dark y/n genuinely is and how they aren't even supposed to be here ... i mean, they were told to keep inside. might it have been for a reason other than the obvious ones?
walking further down the forest path, y/n stopped. it felt like someone was watching her from the deep depths of the forest.. but maybe it wasn't so deep in? maybe whatever was watching her was closer than ever. it sure felt like that, anyway.
"something's here!"
"something's here!"
the voice repeated.
the woman sounded desperate - scared? warning?
"y/n.."
the same voice whispered.
"y/n? you out here?"
but this time, it was nick.
"Nick!"
"y/n? shout again!"
"i'm over here!"
"i'm coming!"
only seconds later, nick came walking towards her. his pace was normal, but he was a bit out of breath. not enough to notice, but it was because he had shouted multiple times before while jogging and walking.
"hey." he said, coming a bit closer.
"hello.. uh, hey." y/n only said 'hello' in situations where she found herself being awkward or the scene was somewhat awkward. this was certainly one of those.
"you uh.. you ran off."
"i didn't really run." y/n said, letting out a nervous, short chuckle. she walked a few meters off to sit down. nick followed, sitting down too. his back was faced hers, but it was right above hers. if he turned his head, he'd be looking straight at her.
"i guess the game just got a little intense." y/n continued, lookibg straight ahead. she was aware of where nick was sitting, and how looking slightly to the right would make them look at each other.
"I .." nick didn't know what to say. and even if he did, how would he ever word it right?
"Yeah .. I know what you mean."
"So.. you and emma then?"
"she just really wanted to make him jealous." he responded, looking between her and the forest. he wasn't the best at holding eyecontact when something was on his mind ... more specifically - when the person he was looking at was on his mind. he kept thinking about the kiss, and how it was y/n he visualised.
".. you think?" it was obvious emma still liked jacob deep down. why else would she go out of her way to mess with his feelings and keep him interested? unless she was just a bitch like that.
"Uh, i mean .. yeah. why the heck else would she kiss me like that?"
y/n refocused her attention onto something else and looked away. this conversation wasn't helping at all so far.
"I guess."
"i was just playing along. really."
"yeah. it was just a silly game." y/n turned her head once again, looking directly into nick's eyes.
"yeah." nick said, nodding his head slightly. you almost wouldn't even notice it unless you payed great attention.
the silence stayed for a few.
silented silent silence.
the silentness was pretty silent, but it kept on going for a little while longer.
the duo just gazed into each others eyes, before nick started closing in the space between them. he slowly moved closer and closer, tilting his head to the side - still keeping the eye contact. only a few seconds later, their lips met. there was no more eye contact, as they both closed their eyes to take in what was happening. something so long waited for, so long overdue .. but it finally happened. the voices in the woods - the feeling of being watched - it all went away in this moment. nothing mattered but their lips on each other. emma wasn't wrong: nick sure is good. and he was even better now, as he was doing it with the person he imagined doing it with.
y/n pulled away only far enough for them to look at each other. a chuckle escaped both persons lips before nick went in for it again. normally, he would be the taller one but because of how he had to use his hands to keep himself up, PLUS how y/n was sitting higher, he was a bit shorter right now - something that gave him much easier access to y/n's lips.
nick took one of his hands and placed it on y/n cheek, still kissing her.

Curveball - UNTIL DAWN REWRITE Chapter Four
[UNTIL DAWN-MASTERLIST]
Previous Chapter / Next Chapter
Summary: Things escalated extremy quickly and the things they found out... well, it was a hell lot of hard pills to swallow for a bunch of young adults that thought they were going to have a chill week end in their friend’s lodge. There was no time to waste crying and complaining. Synthya had made up her mind, she was going to find Josh no matter what, even if it led to her ultimate demise, she wouldn’t be able to live with herself if she didn’t try to save him after he turned out not to be dead... and then was snatched away by a Wendigo. She would get the both of them through the night, or she’d rather not survive this. Her thoughts weren’t really with her family on that one.

Mount Washington’s Lodge, 04:23 AM
THREE HOURS UNTIL DAWN
After the bloodcurling revelation in the basement, where Synthya and Mike found Chris and Ashley tied to chairs with sawblades hanging down from the ceiling right above their heads, they had found out who was hidden underneath the psycho’s mask and it was a shock for all four of them. They saw Josh die in a gruesome and traumatic way, screaming to death only to find him laughing erratically at the whole situation. He seemed so detached from what had happened. About fourty minutes ago, Chris and Mike led him to a shed further away from the lodge. The two argued with Synthya as she wanted to come with them, fearing something might happen outside but she ultimately stayed at the house, keeping company to Ashley until Chris came back alone, having left Mike to guard Josh there. She was restless, to say the least, extremely worried and unable to sit down, she kept walking back and forth in the living room of the lodge, fidgeting her fingers nervously. The cold was the least of her worries right now. The three of them just stood there, in heavy silence until they heard a high-pitched scream outside the lodge, echoing through the mountain and a minute later, Emily was screaming frantically, pounding on the door, begging to be let in.
“Is that—?” Ashley timidly wondered, sitting on the edge of the couch.
“It’s Em!” Synthya stopped in her tracks, and the two girls ran to the door with Chris.
“Let her in! Quick!!” He opened the door and she fell to the floor, gasping.
“Shut the door! Oh my God—Shut the door!!” Chris closed it right away and Synthya and Ashley dragged her inside and helped her get back on her feet before leading her to the living room as she caught her breath, recovering from what had happened to her out there. Seeing her like this instantly reminded Synthya of her own state after she was chased by this creepy stranger a year ago. “I didn’t think that I’d make it—”
“You were screaming bloody murder.” Chris said.
“You look totally wiped—” Ashley observed.
“There was something—” Emily spoke, cut off by her sobbing.
“Where’s Matt—"
“Come sit down, sit down--” Synthya advised, sitting beside her as they settled her on the sofa. Ashley kneeled in front of her, a hand on her lap, concerned for her friend. Synthya wasn’t really close to anyone but Chris, Josh and Ashley but still, she was a quite sympathetic and forgiving person and never liked seeing anyone being completely freaked out like this.
“Did you guys split up?”
“A monster—It’s a monster--!” Emily cried out, too freaked out to hear Ashley’s questions.
“Are you okay?” Chris inquired, standing in front of the three young women.
“I’m fine, I don’t feel anything. I just need to calm down. It was moving so damn fast—”
“What?”
“I just had to get away—”
“Away from what?” Synthya asked.
“Th-there was this thing, whatever it was--!” Ashley straightened up and sat next to her.
“Em, Em, you can relax… Josh was messing with us… but we—”
“You’re not listening to me.” She shook her head, letting it fall forward.
“Wait Em… Where’s Matt? Is he okay?” Chris wondered. She looked up at him.
“Matt, oh, God…” She lamented. “We couldn’t use the cable car, so we climbed to the tower and then it fell and we were down in the mine, like way down, down in this terrifying freaking mine shaft…”
“Hold on, hold on…” He tried to slow her down.
“And then, it was Matt and me down there and… Oh, God, I think that Matt might be dead.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, what mine shaft?”
“I— I was walking down there, in the mines, and it was dark, and I found this pile and… there was Beth’s head!” Synthya felt a cold sweat running down her back, staring at Emily, processing what she just said. She knew they were dead; she saw them fall down a cliff but hearing that was rather unsettling and upsetting. Beth, and Hannah, were her best friends.
“Whait, what?!” Chris exclaimed while Synthya now stared into space. She softly closed her eyes for a second, swallowing harshly.
“Beth’s head. I found it.”
“Oh my God.” Ashley curled up on the couch. They were all shocked and taken aback by her statement.
“I think they fell down there.” She continued, in a lower voice. Synthya thought of saying that the twins fell down a cliff, but she let the words die in her throat and remained quiet. “But the worst part is I don’t thnk Hannah died, like, from the fall, not right away…”
“What? What do you mean?”
“I don’t know… I feel like she was down there… like, starving to death… for weeks… when we were all up here looking for her… we had no idea!”
“Jesus, that’s… horrible…” Chris shook his head, sighing. He glanced at Synthya who was staring at her feet, her jaw clenched.  She looked even paler than before, troubled by the discovery. “Are you okay, Synthya?”
“Uh?” She raised her head, snapped out of her thoughts. Ashley and Emily were looking at her and she nodded, trying to get her shit together, clearing her throat. “I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.”
“Listen.” Emily spoke. “In… In the tower there was a radio and I—I got through to someone, but that was right when the tower collapsed!” Out of the blue, Mike ran in the room and Synthya stood up at the sight of him. The only thought that crossed her mind was that he left Josh on his own in the shed. She felt a sudden urge to yell at him, but she was so dumbfounded and disturbed by what Emily had told them, she just stood there as they hugged. He seemed relieved to see her safe and sound.
“What about Matt?” He frowned in worry, looking around.
“We’re trying to figure that out…” Ashley replied.
“Mike—”
“And there was this “monster” that was chasing her…” Chris added, inadvertently speaking over Synthya trying to get their attention to ask about Josh.
“She’s all messed up, guys.” He held her shoulders somehow tenderly.
“Mike!”
“What?” The moment he looked at Synthya, someone banged on the back door of the lodge and every single one of them turned their head in confusion kind of freezing in place for a second. Mike lowered his voice, glancing at Chris from the corner of his eyes. “Who the fuck can that be?”
“Josh?” Synthya and Emily looked at Ashley.
“Jess?” Chris thought.
“It’s not Jess.”
“Sorry man… but who is this?”
“I don’t know… We should check it out.”
“I got your back.” Chris said, touching his shoulder. Synthya stared at the back door, taking a step forward. When no one moved along with her, she gazed at Chris and Mike, motioning for them to come and even though she knew Chris would probably want to ask her to stay there with the others, she wasn’t about to wait for something to happen again. Mike pulled out his gun and the three of them carefully made their way to the back door. He held up the weapon, pointing it at the door. “Uh… let me have the pistol. Cause you can take whoever it is through sheer good looks. And muscle and all that… Just, uh—”
“I think I should have the gun.” Synthya cut him off with a straight face and Mike looked at her.
“Actually, yeah, no you’re right, give it to her.” Chris agreed. “I saw her at the shooting range, she… she can definitely hold a gun.”
“All right then.” Mike handed the gun to her, and she aimed at the door, one finger right above the trigger in case she had to shoot whoever was out there.
“Okay, I’m gonna open the door. You ready?” Chris asked and both Mike and Synthya nodded. His arms hanging down his body, he fidgeted his fingers nervously and jumped when Mike urged him.
“Just do it already, whoever it is has probably gone by now.” Chris eventually approached and the moment he turned the doorknob, the stranger kicked in the door and Chris fell backwards. A man walked in, staring at Synthya who held him at gunpoint, even though he didn’t really seem that impressed. She frowned, uneasy as she glanced at the weapon in his hands.
“Stop right there! Freeze—" She tried raising her voice, but he suddenly reached for the gun and almost twisted her wrist. While Chris was getting up, Mike grabbed her arm and dragged her away from the stranger.
“All right, all right… take it easy grandpa.”
“Okay. Everybody just calm down.” The stranger spoke. Synthya noticed he had a scar across his right eye, the pupil of which was milky white and when her eyes lingered on his weapon and clothes, she noticed a pair of goggles around his neck and a flame thrower in his hands and suddenly, it all clicked in. The man that was chasing her and the twins in the forest a year ago with the flame thrower. She shook her head as she stepped back, a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. He walked towards them, pushing them back to the living room and she felt threatened, and when he rose his voice, she couldn’t help but be startled. “Now just move over there. Go on, move! Let me say what I came to say.” She stared at him with restless eyes, uneasy. “I’m just here to tell you what you’re up against being back on this mountain. You should never have returned. I don’t know why you did after what happened last year.”
“You mean with Hannah and Beth?” Ashley asked shyly.
“Yeah, how could you know without being involved—” Chris added. Synthya parted her lips to say something, but she gulped and let herself fall on the couch, staring at the floor. The stranger turned towards them.
“You hold onto your horses. I don’t take kindly to you kids coming back up here on my mountain.”
“Your mountain? Huh, I’m sure the Washingtons would be very surprised to hear that.” Mike retorted and the man laughed.
“Well, this mountain don’t belong to me, it’s true. But it don’t belong to the Washingtons. This mountain belongs to the Wendigo.” He went on to explain.
“What the hell’s a wendigo?” Mike wondered. There was a brief silence of confusion among the five friends and Synthya raised her head, glancing at the stranger. She looked away when she crossed his gaze and he narrowed his eyes, staring at her. She was quite uncomfortable with the man that chased her in the forest just glaring at her. She was also very confused as to why he would be there trying to give them advice and why he looked somehow less scary than in her memories.
“I knew I’d recognized your face.” He took a step towards her, and the others turned their faces towards her. She eventually held his gaze, frowning. “You’re the one that was with the two Washington girls that night. You fell over the cliff, and I pulled you up.”
“What is he talking about?” Chris wondered.
“Why would you chase us down and then save me?”
“I wasn’t the one chasing you in that forest.” She was a little dumbfounded at his answer. “It was the wendigo.”
“What—?”
“That’s what I’m trying to warn you about and listen, because I’m only going to tell you this once. It doesn’t matter if you believe me or not. I got reasons I want to… Get it off my chest…”
“See? I told you!” He waved at Synthya and the Stranger. Synthya was still trying to process what the stranger said and trying to understand that he was never the one after them and that all this time it had been some monster was very hard. “He’s guilty as shit! Guilty of something!”
“There is a curse.” He said, his back to them. “That dwells in these mountains. Should any man or woman resort to cannibalism in these woods the spirit of the wendigo shall be unleashed. You’re gonna need to fing somewhere safe.
“Wait…” Synthya spoke, starting to grasp how bad the situation was if there really were creatures roaming around. She stood up and faced Mike on her left. “Josh… What about Josh?”
“I… ran off and left Josh when I heard screaming.”
“Where did you leave him?” The stranger inquired.
“In the shed…”
“Your friend will already be dead.”
“No…” Synthya brought her hand to her hair, shaking her head. She couldn’t believe Josh might be dead, really dead this time.
“No… No, he can’t be… We were just with him!” Chris got up.
“A lot can happen quickly on this mountain.” The stranger shook his head.
“No. I’m gonna go get him.”
“I’m coming with you.”
“You can’t go out there!” Ashley disapproved.
“I’m supposed to be his best friend and I let him down.”
“No… he let you down, Chris. You too, Synthya – he let all of us down.”
“I don’t care.” He retorted.
“We’re going to get him.” Synthya added, her jaw clenched. “And y’all can hate him, when he’s safe and sound too.”
“I’ll go with you.” The stranger calmly said, stepping forward.
“We don’t need your help.”
“Going alone is suicide.” He warned Chris and he and Synthya just shrugged agreeing to go with out there with him. “The rest of you- get down to the basement. Be safe. Don’t go outside until we’re back.” He came in front of Chris and Synthya and they held his gaze. “You don’t seem to understand the magnitude of the situation.”
“Well, we’re going to get Josh, aren’t we?” Chris replied.
“No, I’m going to get Josh. You’re going to help me. Do you understand?” The two friends glanced at each other and slowly nodded. “You need to follow me. And do everything I tell you.”
“Okay.” Synthya mouthed, looking at Chris, shooting up her eyebrows as they followed the stranger to the front door in silence, leaving the others in the living room. He stopped before opening the door and got a shotgun hanging beside the flame thrower tanks on his back and turned to them, handing it out to Synthya.
“That’s the end you point towards the thing you want to kill.”
“Yes. I do know how to use a shotgun, man.” She sighed, annoyed.
“I know. That’s why I gave it to you.” She was surprised by the confidence in his voice. He had probably heard Chris say she knew how to hold and use a gun, or maybe he was up there on the mountain and saw them at the shooting range earlier in the evening. He opened the door and Synthya took a step forward to follow him when she heard Ashely’s voice and she glanced to her left. The latter came up to Chris, worried, and kissed him and Synthya was torn between being excited for the two as they finally shared a kiss, and being saddened by this sight, reminding her of her own relationship with Josh. She wanted to find him, and she wasn’t even religious, but she never prayed so hard for something. This was the only thing left to do, hoping he wasn’t dead, and she and Chris would get him back and then, she would get him the help he needs, even if it means that he’ll hate her for it. She was ready to do anything to help him and she wouldn’t be able to live with herself if she just waited for dawn with the others, safe in the basement. She was going to face her demons and she didn’t like one bit, but it was for something worth fighting for. Synthya stepped outside and the stranger glanced at her, noticing Chris was still inside. She looked around at the dark woods surrounding them and swallowed harshly. “We need to hurry, son.”
“I’ll see you soon.” He said to Ashley before heading out, joining Synthya and the stranger in the snow. “So… so tell us. You’re the expert on these things. What’s… uh… What’s a guy gotta know…?”
“You just be careful. You follow my lead. And you stay near your friend, she’s got the gun.”
“Yeah, I’ma breathe down your neck. I’ll become like your shadow.” He joked, trying to hide how nervous he was feeling, and she briefly chuckled. Normally, she would have laughed because it was funny but right now, they were both extremely worried and anxious, unsure about what was going to happen. Nonetheless, it was reassuring to have one another to go and rescue Josh, if he was still alive.
“So, how do we kill these things? How many times do I have to shoot it before it’s dead?” Synthya asked as they climbed down the stairs.
“Well, you’d be shooting a long time.”
“You mean this shotgun won’t even kill it? Is it why you have a flame thrower? They’re sensitive to fire or something?”
“Right on the mark.” He nodded, walking down the path in front of them. “The shotgun will slow it down. The fire, they fear it, and it can kill them if you have to… See their skin if like… it’s like tough armor, unless you burn it off first.”
“That’s gross…” Chris remarked. “What are these things like? I mean, are they just crazy unpredictable or can you figure out what they’re gonna do?”
“Well… they adhere to some patterns… like any animal… or human.”
“Wh- you mean, like how? Ike they’ve got schedules?”
“Well, they only hunt at night.”
“Why?” Synthya asked after being silent for a minute, listening.
“I didn’t ask.” The strange responded.
“Any, uh, pro Wendigo tips? Like if I rub garlic all over me, they won’t be able to smell me or something?” Chris then went on to ask, his uneasiness growing as they got deeper in the woods, and close to the shed.
“They’ll still smell you.”
“Anything like that?”
“They can’t see you if you’re standing still. It’s like toads… sight is based on changes of movement in their field of vision.”
“So, if we don’t move… We’re basically invisible.”
“Yeah, well, I wouldn’t recommend testing it out… unless you have no other choice.” They then fell into silence for a moment until they were about 60 feet from the shed. They walked around it and Synthya tightened her grip on the shotgun, ready to pull it up and shoot it a wendigo appeared in front of them.
“If these things… Wendigos… are, or were human…  do they still have some aspect of humanity in them?” Chris wondered and they stopped in their tracks for a second.
“Well, they retain certain things.”
“I mean is it really right to kill them?” The stranger tittered. “Maybe they can be cured or—”
“They surrender human rights the moment they eat one another. There is no cure. There is no redemption.”
“I mean if they’re still human I don’t know if it’s a right to hurt them—”
“If they’ve done anything to Josh, I’m not gonna hold back. That much I know.” Synthya declared and the stranger gave her   a glance before looking at Chris. Good thing she was the one with the gun.
“You’ve got good survival instincts. Lucky your friend’s there, cause when you’re staring one in the face, it’s them, or you. You feel free to take the high road. You won’t be on it for long.” they resumed their walk and came to the shed door, wide open and inside, a broken stool was knocked over next to a wooden a lamp oil and a pool of blood. Synthya widened her eyes in panick, assuming that it was where Josh was supposed to be.
“Oh my god… is it his blood? What the fuck happened?!” She inquired in fear, staring at the ground and Chris squeezed her shoulder, looking around.
“He’s gone…! We’re too late!”
“Shh! Quiet!” The stranger suddenly shushed them, and they turned to him as he lowered his voice, taking a look outside the shed. “We gotta go. Right now.”
“We gotta find Josh – he could still be out here!” Chris insisted.
“Ha-ha! First, the Wendigo, he’ll render you immobile.” He approached them, almost whispering before gradually stepping away again. “And then he strips the skin off of your entire body, piece by piece, and then he keeps you alive and aware and feasts on your organs, one piece at a time.”
“So, the Lodge, then.” Chris said, reluctant to go back just now. Synthya sighed, closing her eyes shut for a second. She couldn’t believe they were giving up so quickly and that they were leaving Josh out there on his own and in the confused and disorientated state he was in.
“Let’s go now, it might still be near!” He instructed and quickly jogged out. Chris and Synthya joined him and the moment they got near him; he ordered them to stop moving. They glanced at each other as they stood as still as a statue and after a few seconds, the stranger decided to take a careful step forward. Synthya’s heart missed a beat when she saw this slender and inhumanely tall figure in the distance. “Run! Go! Now! Now!”
“Holy shit what the fuck?!” Chris swore, stopping in his tracks abruptly when the stranger used his flame thrower and the Wendigo jumped away. Synthya was feeling this lump in her stomach again and her throat was getting sore and uncomfortable. She wanted to dig a hole and break down but there was absolutely not second to waste, and she just tried to get a hold of her breathing accelerating, getting prepared to shoot at the creature if needed. She had the gun, and she needed to be ready to use it, no matter how scared and frightened she was.
“We’re right out of the pen— We gotta get out of here!” The stranger peeked around when suddenly, the Wendigo came out of nowhere, jumping right on him and sliced through his throat, cutting his head off. Synthya screamed at the top of her lungs to the point her whole mouth felt completely dried, her eyes widened out of terror, his body fell down to his knees and then lied flat on his stomach while she stared in absolute shock at the head and the pool of blood growing around it. When Chris rose his voice and called her name, she just pivoted her body like she was on auto mode and shot in the Wendigo’s direction, pushing him away from them. He then grabbed her arm as she sobbed frantically, this vision of horror engraved in her mind, and they ran back to the lodge as fast as they could. They ducked underneath a fallen tree, and she turned around to see the Wendigo on it, ready to jump at them and end them the same way it killed the stranger. She immidietaly shoot and they resumed running to the lodge like they became track stars. As they approached the front of the house, another Wendigo popped out of the blue. She shot it without wasting time, sniffing, and they made their way to the door and Chris started banging on it. Ashley arrived and opened it for them.
“Guys!! Oh my god, what happened?”
“We gotta go, that thing was like right behind us—” The Wendigo hopped over to the door and jumped on it, breaking through the glass as they fleed.

Old hotel, 04:47 AM
“Oh my god! Guys! Thank god!” Emily sounded overly relieved to see Chris and Synthya walk pasted the door along with Ashley. They were all in a sort of small room in the basement, closed by thick mesh walls. Opposite to the door, there was a desk and half a dozen screens displaying CCTV footage of the cameras set around the house. Mike closed the door behind them. Synthya took a deep breath in; she wasn’t sobbing like crazy, but her eyes were red and despite being naturally pale, she must have looked like literal corpse, staring into space and just following Chris to sit down.
“It’s not so good up there right now…"
“Understatement of the night.” Mike said, he was exhausted too. Synthya rested her elbows on her laps and cupped her face in her hands, letting it all sink in. She was already traumatized enough, she didn’t want the sight of the stranger’s severed head to be there when she would cose her eyes because until someone came to get them out of here, she had to be fully there in order to survive and help Josh as well. She could work on everything that happened that nigh when she would see her therapist again. She closed her eyes, trying to concentrate and raised her head. “Where’s the flame throwing guy?”
“Ah… yeah… He, uh… He didn’t make it…”
“Oh no… What happened?” Emily slightly shook her head, resting her hands on her hips.
“The thing it… it tore him apart… Right in front of us…”
“All right… these all the doors?” Mike inquired, walking around the room, warily looking around.
“Yeah.” Ashley nodded.
“Are you sure?”
“What are you looking for?”
“Another way out.” He walked to the screens and watched.
“Mike… I don’t think that’s a good idea. We should stay put until dawn. At least we’re safe down there—" Emily stated worriedly and he turned to her instantly, cutting her off.
“Oh? Yeah? All wrapped up like a little present with a bow on top for that thing to tear us apart on Christmas morning?”
“People will come for us. In the morning.” Ashley said.
“You don’t sound so sure.”
“That is what will happen… right, Em?”
“Uh, yeah… I mean…”
“Well, you can wait.” He retorted. “I’m leaving.”
“Mike… There’s no key for the cable car—” Emily said.
“Josh.” Synthya glance over at him as he mentioned his name. “He’s gotta have it. One of his dirty little tricks. If that fucking thing got a hold of Josh… then we’re shit outta luck.”
“I don’t know, Mike… it’s possible…” She shrugged.
“What’s possible?” Synthya stood up, staring at them.
“It may have taken him down to the mine… I saw some horrible stuff down there… I think it’s where that thing lives… and…” She turned to a table along the wall and bent over a map spread over it, taking a look at it. She went silent for a second, picking up a book to see the map better but didn’t say anything else. Synthya walked over to Emily.
“Fuck it.” Mike exclaimed. “I’m gonna get that key. Right from that thing’s goddamned bedroom, and then I’m gonna get us all the hell out of here.”
“What’s all that?” Synthya asked, seeing a whole bunch of stuff over the table.
“It’s that old guy’s bag.”
“That guy was prepared for anything…”
“Not quite.” Mike commented.
“What is this place?” Emily wondered, pointing at an old map.
“Oh my God. I was down there. It was horrible.” He explained. “There had been a cave-in. In the fifties I guess, and these miners got trapped down there. Some of them survived but… like… fifteen of ‘em didn’t make it. There was this reporter and I think he figured out there had been some, like, big cover-up going on. I found these plans – they knew the mine was a death trap, but they let the miners keep working anyway. And… I’m not sure what it means but I found this chair, with dried blood all over the place… like somebody’s been tortured…”
“Michael, I’d like to maybe focus on how we’re going to get the fuck out of here please?”
“I’m just saying it’s weird how much crazy shit’s gone on up here…”
“What’s weird is that there’s a tunnel leading from the lodge to the Sanatorium, see?” She pointed at it on the map.
“That’s how I got back here.”
“I saw this. When I was down in there. That’s where it lives.”
“Em…” Ashley stood behind Emily and brought her hand to her shoulder, worried, for some reason and she then pointed at her, walking away. “Em, what is that…? What is that? Em, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god—”
“It’s nothing.” She tried calming her as Mike and Synthya stepped away from her as well. “I just – it bit me, and—”
“It bit you? What bit you?” Ashley cut her off.
“The, uh… the Wendigo. It’s nothing, really, it’s not a big deal—”
“Are you okay?” Synthya asked.
“Yeah. It doesn’t hurt anymore. Really. It’s not that bad.”
“Em… if that thing bit you…” Mike frowned. The situation was already tensed, learning that Emily got bitten by a Wendigo didn’t help lighten up the mood. She tried assuring him she was fine, but he didn’t seem to want to hear it or believe it. “Emily, if the Wendigo bit you… You could turn into one of those things.”
“I don’t think it works like that, Mike. It’s not fucking vampires.” Synthya came to stand next to Emily. She had no idea how this whole Wendigo thing actually worked but according to what the Stranger had told them, it wasn’t this way. One had to eat another human’s flesh in order for the spirit of the Wendigo to possess their body, or something like that. And with everyone really nervous and scared, regrettable mistakes would easily happen, so she watched Mike.
“He said it was from eating each other, remember he said that!” Ashley cried out. “It happens if it bit you, you’re gonna turn into one and—"
“Yeah, Ashley, from eating each other, not biting each other!” Synthya cut off Ashley, raising her voice in annoyance. She could see where this whole argument was heading from a mile away. “Emily didn’t eat fucking human flesh; she’s not going to turn into a Wendigo! Think for a second!”
“Emily… you can’t stay here. You’re putting us all in danger!” Mike yelled.
“Hey, Mike, just cool your head, okay? It doesn’t work like that. It’s definitely just a bite.”
“I’ve seen what these fuckers can do. I don’t want to see it again.” Chris spoke in a calm voice, seriousness on his face.
“Chris, come on, man!” Synthya looked at him in disbelief. “I’ve seen what they can do too, but the stranger never said you coud turn into one with just a fucking bite!”
“What is this, guys? What are you doing?” Emily asked, looking at each and every one of them.
“Door’s right here.” Mike pointed at the door on his right. “I’m letting you do this voluntarily.”
“Oh no,” Emily walked up to him. “you’re just making yourself feel better about sending me to my death since you know there’s a Wendigo out there ready to rip me to pieces like it did with—"
“Okay, oh my god! Will you just go!? Go! Get out of here!” Ashley aggressively told Emily and Synthya sighed. She so wanted to tell her to shut the fuck up but when she saw Mike grab a gun and aim it at Emily, she widened her eyes.
“Mike… calm down.”
“You’re going to shoot me?” Emily couldn’t believe it. “Mike…? Me?”
“This is the safe room, Em.” She started crying and begging him, but he wasn’t listening. “It’s not safe as long as you’re in it. Not for us. I’m really sorry.” He held the gun up, clenching his jaw, distressed at what he was about to do when suddenly, Synthya just stepped in front of the gun, staring at him. He grumbled, trying to get her to step away and just let him do this but he could see that she wasn’t moving any time soon and he let his arms fall down along his body, letting out a heavy sigh and walked in a circle. “Shit… Fuck… Fuck…”
“You did the right thing.” Synthya declared before checking on Emily, who was wiping away the tears that rolled down her cheeks.
“Alright, you keep an eye on her… if you see anything weird… you guys know what to do. And no one leave, okay?” Mike instructed. “It’s not safe out there. I’ll be back soon.”
“Hey, Mike. Wait a sec’.” He was about to leave the room and looked at her, stopping in his tracks. “You want to find the keys and I want to find Josh. I’m coming with you.”
“Synthya, you’re brave and all, but you just came back, I don’t think you—”
“It doesn’t matter what you think about it. I’ll rest when I find Josh.” She declared and he knew there was no way he could talk her out of it so he just shrugged, reluctantly inviting her to leave the safe room with him. She knew very well that she was still a little shaken from what happened with Chris and the Stranger, not so long ago but she couldn’t just wait around, until dawn finaly came and just pray that Josh would come out safe and sound. She woud rather die along with him if something happened, than never know what his fate ended up being. Either she saved the both of them, or none at all. Living with the fact that she preferred to save herself rather than go after him would be worst than having to become his caregiver, whatever other serious underlying menta illness he had. She didn’t know what to expect of him and their relationship once all this shit would be over, if they did survive until dawn, but whatever it would be, she woud live better knowing he was alive.
