Not surprised since this is the site that only talks about racism and thinks it’s a big deal when they see it demonstrated in the cartoons and comics they like *coughs* dungeonmeshi *coughs* (for example at least. I haven’t seen THIS many white ppl talk as in depth about racism on here as much as these fandom nerds, man. I stg. Like “Ohhhh, so you all DO acknowledge that racism is real? Just not in real life even if you could feel it slapping you in the face at high speed. Gotcha.” It’s crazy.

Tumblr is like, 90% white and is extremely centered around them. That’s why you barely see stuff that’s important to black and brown people ever trending here or being talked about. It has to be something incredibly huge to the point where even white people can’t ignore it like they usually do, to talk about it here.

They only talked about George Floyd here because the topic of his death became world news. Even people in other countries were talking about it. Before him, it was probably Ferguson and Trayvon Martin… most of them are still trying their best to ignore the genocides because it’s a “touchy subject.” What do you expect from white people who live in their own bubbles of comfort and refuse to pop it with a needle??? They find comfort in their privilege and faux ignorance (they love playing stupid to avoid conversations about important things outside of fandoms like, are these mfs born with half a brain dedicated to fandom or what.) you’re not wrong at all but i guess im just used to mcs having absolutely no backstory, feelings, or definitive character traits. the plot just happens to mcs, mcs don’t make the plot happen. even though expectations are higher for blades its still choices with all the limits and misses opportunities of any other book. i cant really think of an mc that feels like their own character before the book and plot starts, besides maybe cop mc in the first book and th:m mc

Just wanna start off by saying I’m so sorry that I never actually responded to this! I could’ve sworn I had already posted, but found this fully typed up sitting in my drafts just now 😵‍💫 But yeah anyway…

See I don’t normally have a problem with “blank-slate MCs” though. I actually prefer them because I can use my imagination to create a backstory and (ideally) give them the traits I want through my choices. My main problem is that the few choices we are allowed to make usually just don’t matter beyond like a slight variation in dialogue as a result. And even bigger than that, there isn’t much diversity in the options we’re given to begin with.

I think if those problems didn’t exist, Blades MC was allowed to react to whatever happens on a deeper level, and our so-called friends showed more concern through their actions, then the story would be a bit better for me. However, I will say that I also think that’s the bare minimum, especially considering the fact that the writers already gave MC a partial backstory but decided it wasn’t important to have that affect present MC and the story for whatever reason.

Doing that worked in a series like TRR/TRH because, in the grand scheme of things, that MC’s backstory didn’t really matter and the plot was a little more cut and dried. But with Blades, the stakes are incredibly high and everyone is basically questioning the meaning of life and existence itself, what morality means in a world where things are a lot more gray than previously thought, and the roles they play in that world. So although I usually don’t mind it, I don’t think keeping Blades MC’s background from affecting anything significant really works.

Not sure where I’m going with all this though because none of it really counters your point. You’re right that it’s still Choices after all, so our expectations should be a bit lower even for a book like Blades. But it still sucks because I feel like PB really didn’t have to push too much further to make it an outstanding story. They were the ones who gave themselves all this material and then just didn’t follow through :/

So I recently decided to restart Phantom Hourglass once again and I think the one thing they always surprises me a bit every time I play is just… how kind of really terrible Ciela is to Linebeck throughout the whole game.

Like sure, he’s a dick who needs to be knocked down a few pegs and all of that at the start but… she’a very consistently dismissive and rude and usually the one to spark arguments with him.

It’s been a bit since I last played through all the way so my memory’s a bit fuzzy, but she really is very consistently harsh towards him, even while others may change their opinion, like Oshus. Ciela never really seems to give him a chance or the benefit of the doubt, at least not to his face, and even when he really starts getting into his character development and genuinely trying to be nicer and braver and better she still continues to all but bully him up until the end.

Again, it’s been a bit, so I might not be totally accurate, but there are two bits that have always stuck in my mind as just… testaments to the fact that yeah, she’s kind of really terrible to him at times.

The first being when Link finds Linebeck near the Temple of the Ocean King after he gets the Phantom Sword. Linebeck is effectively almost done with his arc at that point, and really genuinely opens up to Link about how he’s felt about the quest and how he feels and… you can tell in this scene that he’s being genuine in trying to express his honest feelings and come to terms with them and let Link know in some roundabout way how much their time together has meant, but once it’s all said and done Ciela latches onto his telling Link not to die and uses it almost as an excuse to make fun of him again, disregarding everything he said in favor of essentially telling him ‘Link’s going to be fine, shut up and fuck off,’ and even when he goes to leave and asks her very genuinely to take care of Link and calls her by name, she just sounds surprised about him calling her by name and moves on.

Ciela never really acknowledges that Linebeck changes- not until the very end, and when she actually does, it’s always in a sarcastic or joking sort of tone until that end. She ignores any sign of him being kinder or less egotistical and just acts like he’s the same jackass that she and Link met at the beginning of the game. Not to mention, I can’t imagine how painful it must be to finally gather up the courage and honestly express your feelings like that only to get ignored and mocked for one throwaway comment! All things considered, that’s a shitty move!

The other thing is less about anything she says, but more about implying how Linebeck feels about her. One of the last things he says to her after Bellum is defeated is ‘You’ve always got to get the last word, don’t you?’

I don’t know. That line itself, paired with being right after she doesn’t entirely take seriously his wish to have his ship returned to him… I feel like it just… sums up how Linebeck probably feels about her.

Honestly, with just those two examples alone, I could go on for a lot more about how kind of terrible she was, but this is long enough as is.

I do like Ciela and I think she’s great, but when it comes to how she treats Linebeck… there’s a lot there.
