One day I'll find a better quality version of this clip but omg. It's a TNT from 4 26 1985, so he hasn't even been with the WWF for a month and he's already causing chaos.

Pro Wrestling Illustrated: 1995 THE YEAR IN WRESTLING. March 1996
COMEBACK OF THE YEAR RANDY SAVAGE: 20,036 votes
This wasn’t supposed to be an eventful year for Randy Savage. The “Macho Man” was going to devote himself to his broadcasting duties and compete in the ring only occasionally, right?
Wrong!
It didn’t happen, and that’s why Savage has won Comeback of the Year.
Savage stunned the wrestling world when he left WWF for WCW but not as a wrestler/broadcaster, but as a wrestler, period. The rumors immediately began: Was he back to form an alliance with his old WWF friend Hulk Hogan, or was he going to begin a vicious feud with his old WWF enemy Hulk Hogan?
At first, it was neither. His primary focus was on defeating another old hated foe, Ric Flair. Although Savage suffered his first WCW loss to the “Nature Boy,” at The Great American Bash, he beat Flair in most of their matches around the circuit and beat him decisively at Bash at the Beach. In the process of those matches, and several against Big Van Vader, Savage proved that ring rust had not at all eaten away at his legendary skills.
“Randy’s probably in better shape now than he’s ever been,” said Sting. “I’ve really been impressed. What impresses me most though, is his enthusiasm. After all these years, he still gets excited about matches.”
In tag team matches, Savage looked just as sharp, teaming with Sting and Hogan for several memorable encounters. Both Savage and Hogan have admitted there was some tension between them on those occasions, but most observers believe it is a tension that worked to the team’s advantage.
“They both were trying to prove to each other who the stronger part of the team was,” said Broadcaster Gene Okerlund. “That made the team more dangerous.”
For Savage, though, no comeback will be complete without a World title, which means friends won’t necessarily be friends for long. He might have to go through the “Hulkster” to get that WCW World belt.
“Savage came so far this year, so you can’t expect him to play second banana to Hogan,” wrote Perry Christopher of Dayton, Ohio. “I’m sure he has a lot of respect for Hulk, but he won’t let anybody keep him away from the World title.”
There’s no more coming back for Savage. He is back. Unless of course we create a new award: Comeback Broadcaster of the Year.
RUNNERS-UP
THE HEAVENLY BODIES: 9,863 votes
First runner-up: For most of the year, the Bodies were completely overlooked in the WWF. Then they decided to go back to their roots. Within three days, they won both the Smoky Mountain and USWA tag team titles. Tom Prichard and Jimmy Del Ray gave notice to all those who were beginning to believe they didn’t belong in the big-time anymore.
SAVIO VEGA: 7,931 votes
Second runner-up: At In Your House I, Vega rescued his old friend Razor Ramon from an attack by Jeff Jarrett and The Roadie. That brought acclaim to a wrestler who, until early-1995, hadn’t done much for a long time. In June, he advanced all the way to the finals of the King of the RIng. In Puerto Rico, he used to be TNT. In the WWF, he has star potential.
THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR: 5,784 votes
Third runner-up: One of the most popular wrestlers of the early-1990s, Warrior hadn’t competed for two years when he defeated The Honky Tonk Man in Las Vegas back in July. Since then, he has wrestled a series of matches in Europe for the Catch Wrestling Association. It’d be no surprise to anyone if he capped his comeback with a move to a major federation.
VOTES FOR OTHERS (29,450)
Some of the top vote-getters who did not capture a runner-up spot include: Chris Benoit, Marty Jannetty, Kamala, Raven, and Dick Slater.

When Championships mean everything
Tumblr media
One of my favourite aspects to wrestling are the championship belts. It's a prop in the story that holds significance. It means the champion is the number one man or woman; they are the best of the best. When the belt is on the line, the match becomes far more significant or so it should. It can elevate a wrestler’s career and establish them as a legitimate star.
Seth Rollins cashing in to win the WWE world heavyweight championship comes to mind as a pivotal moment in Rollins' career and made for a worthy WrestleMania moment.
Kenny Omega's belt collector gimmick was grandiose. I wish it stuck around for longer as it made Omega feel like a powerhouse.
I won’t lie, I did shed tears when Kurt Angle won his first WWF Championship at No Mercy in 2000.
At this present time, Roman Reigns has been Universal Champion for 1138+ days. This adds value to the Tribal Chief, the belt and hopefully to the person who defeats him.
Unfortunately, it's rare that a championship belt means something and adds value. WWE and AEW have so many different belts that the importance becomes diminished. There's also the problem when the belt becomes hot potato; the TNT championship had this issue for a while. I also believe this is why the 24/7 died. It was a prop used for comedy. It had no meaning, and anyone could win the title, even Peter Rosenberg held the strap.
I like the idea of not knowing when a title will change hands. I believe a title should always raise the stakes and add drama to the mix.
At this point in time some belts do mean something; WWE Universal Title and the TNT Championship are great examples of using championships perfectly.
I hope this trend continues.

Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone were introduced to join Excalibur for AEW Dynamite.Taz was introduced as the special guest commentator to join Excalibur for AEW Dark.I almost didn't go because I wake up at around 4 am for work, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see the first AEW show in Philadelphia, and to support this incredible company. Yesterday was the third episode of their new weekly TNT series, AEW Dynamite. I look like an absolute dork, but this is what a happy wrestling fan looks like.

The show was phenomenal, and it developed into a new promotion that has made professional wrestling fun again - All Elite Wrestling.Ĭody is a really awesome dude. That all changed just over a year ago when Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks self-funded a show called All In. I began to wonder if I had just outgrown wrestling. These days, companies like ROH and TNA are a shell of their former selves, and the only programming I truly enjoyed was NXT. As for the new material, the wrestling matches themselves were usually very good, but the storylines, the writing and the commentary was so horrible that it became hard to watch. I subscribed to the WWE 24/7 premium channel, and then the WWE Network when they moved to a streaming service, but I found that when I had time to watch, I would gravitate toward the older shows that I watched when I was a kid.

I ended up going to just about every ROH show in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey for the next few years, and as I became more familiar with their wrestlers, I was exposed to other promotions that they worked, like CZW and Chikara.Īfter college, I started to work for Nestle and I didn't have as much time to keep up with pro wrestling as I once did. I bought tickets and had an incredible time. Then, in 2005, I saw that Kenta Kobashi was scheduled to appear in a Ring of Honor show in Philadelphia. I still kept up with it, but not like I did when I was a kid. I was burned out a little bit in the early 2000's after WCW and ECW went out of business and the WWF/E product started to be disappointing with poor writing and continuity. When I first got on the internet in the late 90's, I joined a couple of tape trading message boards where I got my first exposure to lucha libre and puroresu. I mainly watched WWF when I was in elementary and middle school, and I got into WCW and ECW in the mid 90's. I've been a fan of professional wrestling since before I was in Kindergarten. Until then, I will always have a quarter and a few minutes to forget about the modern world and just play. One day, the last of them will stop working and these once iconic parts of our culture will truly have disappeared. I imagine that some of them haven't been moved in decades and have become as much a part of the permanent surroundings as the restaurant booths and cash register that they stand watch over. Not a lovingly restored cabinet at a retro arcade, but a game that is still in service at a public place, waiting to be played, and periodically emptied of its quarters. Once in a while, I come across a machine out in the wild. Now, in 2019, arcade cabinets become almost as rare as jukeboxes or pay telephones. I stood there for over an hour breaking bricks with the paddle and remembering what it was like to find these games all over town, in every town. I stopped at a gas station in Ohio and there was an Arkanoid machine. It was 2002 and I was driving on I-80 West from Hazleton to Omaha. I remember the day that it occurred to me that they had almost all disappeared. Their disappearance was so slow and gradual that I didn't even notice it happening. They were outside convenience stores and gas stations, and in the entrance way of drug stores and grocery stores. They were in the lobbies of diners and restaurants. When I was growing up in the 80's, it was not at all uncommon to see arcade machines all over town at various places of business.

The entire bar scene with Terry on TNT is so frigging good. I love this middle aged, crazy man and his silly antics (who can also absolutely kick my ass)
The way he picks up that first chair and completely flubs it and then recovers immediately had me howling xD
