the story about the witch in the woods became the story about the silver-eyed warrior in the woods.

those born with silver eyes are destined to lead the life of a warrior.

the huntsmen academies exist solely to train the next generation of defenders that will live and die to protect the lifestyle they’ve become so accustomed to.

do you believe in destiny? <- ruby is haunted by these words she did not hear for months after pyrrha’s death.

the hound had a silver eye. he should have been dead. he wasn’t.

the ozlem girls did not have silver eyes; ozma’s later children—the ones he had after the completion of several death/return cycles—did. (i wonder if it matters that salem is the one who killed him; by her hand, “thus began a long and painful cycle of death and rebirth for ozma”) (she rises from the ashes there too, before burning him) (phoenix imagery)

honestly the grimm reaper / scythe symbolism is the weakest connection linking silver eyes to death, for all that it’s the most conspicuous one.

pacing and muttering transcendence under my breath. psychopomps. grief. the harvest; the death that brings life.

huntsmen live and die to protect a lifestyle.

much to think about. silver eyes are meant to guide, to heal, to bind together, to… transcend the ordinary boundaries between life and death. the cat is unable to go home to the tree until they’ve been killed. ruby rises from the roots in a burst of silver-white radiance, eyes aglow. it’s about love, grief, remembrance.

not really about the grimm at all, except insofar as humans see grimm as existential enemies and unfeeling monsters. the glare mutilates cinder when she kills pyrrha, but she escapes it unscathed when there is no fresh blood on her hands. the legends distort the truth. you were born to hypnotize them all, show them gods and deities/bind and keep the people on their knees, but truth will rise revealed by mirrored eyes.

…i really do want to know what happens when that light touches salem. she’s carrying so much grief and the story thematically needs her to cry. you know?

& the god of light is grieving his brother. hmm

Rumors of the Woods of the Kingdom of Amity

There were rumors about the woods of the kingdom of Amity. You could hear them at any inn or tavern you went to in any town within a hundred miles of Amity’s border. You could hear them from storytellers and mendicants begging for their meals. You could hear them whispered between children trying to scare one another, or old women doing the same.

They went like this:

The woods were home to bandits, displaced and deserting soldiers from beyond the southern sea. Hungry people, some of them, desperate for money and not seeing any other way to it. Well fed brigands, by other accounts, gone fat off the misfortune of others.

There was a horrid beast in the woods, a chimera or dragon the likes of which had rarely been seen outside of ancient heroic legend. It stalked anyone who entered the woods, and if you were unfortunate enough to be selected as its prey, you would never be seen again.

The trees moved on their own, others said. They whispered to one another. They had eyes. Sometimes, they had teeth. They would lead you astray, if they could. Move while you weren’t watching. Confuse your path.

Or, perhaps, it was the ghost fire that danced between the trees that misdirected travelers and led them to uncertain dooms. They were more common in swampier lands, marshes, bogs, and the like, but who knew the preferences of ghosts except for ghosts themselves?

But, no. The woods were haunted, yes, but by the pale ghost of a child, murdered before his time. Or was it the ghost of a young man? If you were polite, he would lead you to safety. But if you asked too many questions…

But they also went like this:

Once, the Conqueror King swept across the land with his thrall armies, seeking to make all the kingdoms of the world his own. He marched into the woods of Amity. He did not march out.

The woods were large enough not only to lose armies in, but towns, cities, kingdoms. And, for those brave enough to dare them and the kinds of risks always associated with ruins, kingdoms’ ransoms. Assuming, of course, that those kingdoms did not still live, in one fashion or another…

The princess would disappear into the woods for days on end, not to be found unless she wished it. She would return with flowers in her hair and fruit in hand, no matter the season, her secrets kept tight behind smiling lips.

Some said there were elves and goblins in the woods. Small, clever folk who would trade the fantastic for the mundane, blessings for curses, memories for skills, truth for lies, and other, stranger things besides.

Other rumors spoke of the oldest tree in the forest, and how it had been grown from a cutting of the tree of life itself. They said the waters of the pool it grew by could take you to strange lands, body and soul together.

And, as with any rumors, many of them were false. Much… but in this case, not all.

“Hey, Tucker.”

The felter’s apprentice jumped about a foot, then craned his neck to look up and backward at the branch Danny was currently lounging on. “I hate it when you do that.”

Danny grinned and propped his chin up on his hand, clearly displaying his unnaturally white teeth. Especially the canines. “Really? I love when you do that?”

“What? Jump out of my skin.”

“Maybe,” said Danny, his smile inching just a little wider, until it was at the edge of what was possible for a human face. He could take it wider, if he wanted. He didn’t. “Aren’t you going to ask me how I am? Aren’t you going to ask me what I’ve been up to?”

“I know what you’ve been up to, you menace. It’s not like the bounty hunters you’ve been tormenting have been quiet.”

“Aw, you love me. It’s Walker’s fault anyway, not mine. Nothing’s making him send anyone.”

“Isn’t he, like, your grandfather or something?”

Danny shrugged and stretched languidly, like a cat, and reversed himself on the branch, fingers growing into claws so he could climb his way down the tree until he was sitting on a particularly prominent root. Not the ground. He tried to avoid that, when at all possible. His tail lashed back and forth.

“But that’s not all that’s been happening.”

“Oh, gods, please tell me you haven’t started another bizarre rumor.”

“Are they really rumors if they’re true?” asked Danny.

“Ninety percent of them are crap. There aren’t any elves in here, or magic immortality trees.”

“Well, I suppose that’s a matter of opinion,” said Danny, tilting his head to one side.

“Your curse doesn’t count.”

Danny made an offended noise in the back of his throat.

Tucker sighed. “Is this something we’ll need Sam to fix?”

“Why do you assume there’s something to fix? Why do we need Sam to fix it? She’s the one who broke things in the first place.” Danny tsked, then put on a disturbingly accurate impression of Princess Samantha of Amity, “Why don’t you look in the mysterious pool, Danny? Why don’t you try out the red vial, Danny? I want to see what will happen, Danny.”

“She didn’t say that.”

“That’s not what I remember,” huffed Danny, turning around. “Maybe I should just do this by myself.”

“Okay, okay, I give up. What have you been up to?”

“The tops of the trees!” Danny burst out laughing.

“Wow… it’s just like the same joke you’ve told a thousand times,” said Tucker. “But, seriously.”

“Seriously,” repeated Danny, “I found the Labyrinth!”

“Wait, really?”

“Yeah! The part of the Deep Woods it was in finally opened– Hey, where are you going?”

“I’ve got to get Sam,” said Tucker, walking quickly the way he’d come.

“Well, yeah,” said Danny, crawling back up into the trees and bounding along tree branch by tree branch, “I want her to come, too, exploring weird ruins is kind of her thing, but you don’t have to– Tucker!” The plaintive cry was more of a shriek than anything else. Tucker skidded to a stop. “You know I can’t leave the woods. Don’t you at least want to know where the Labyrinth is first?”

Tucker skidded to a stop. “Yeah, sorry, buddy. But I just realized– The reason for all the weird cursed weather lately. The frogs and toads and all that. There was something in the Labyrinth that could do that, I remember reading about it. If someone got into the Labyrinth before you…”

“They could have gotten it,” concluded Danny.

“Sam needs to know.”

Danny clacked his claws against the branch he was sitting on. “Alright,” he said. “I guess I’ll need to go into the Labyrinth to talk to the spirits there.” They’d be old ones, slow with age and memory, bound to tree and stone and the ancient meanings carved into once-worshiped rock.

“Yeah? But you were going to, anyway, weren’t you?”

“With you guys,” said Danny, “and it’s no fun if it’s work.”

“Yeah… sorry about that. Look, how about after all of this, we go chase down the river-spire and see if we can’t find those ice sprites again?”

Danny’s ears pricked forward, fur shivering out of his skin at the remembered winter-chill. He soothed them away. Stupid shape shifting not working right.

“Promise?”

Tucker hunched his shoulders slightly. “Well, we’ll try, anyway.”

A little too wise to the ways of creatures like Danny to trust even Danny with a promise. Too bad. Danny chittered, then shrugged.

“I’ll take it. You know how to call me once you get Sam.”

“You say that like I didn’t just do it ten minutes ago.”

Danny shrugged. “Hey, you never know. Humans have bad memories. That’s why there are all those rumors.”

rubbing my hands and dropping a new au of the scarpulse variety fantasy au. scar is an elven necromancer who the village is afraid of (something something "he's the reaper". he's your resident last life coded urban legend that is very nonthreatening) and impulse is the village's demon hybrid blacksmith!! magic is generally disliked since people who are able to harness it is a rarity, and people are scared of it. impulse also has magic thanks to hybridity but he hides it <3 scar has his disabled thanks to rune embroidered gloves they are very sweet once they get together <3 scars design to me is a mix of his elven skin and last life. long white hair with brown streaks, black and gold cloak, like three layers of clothing, the whole thing. (something something the less layers he's wearing the more confident he is) anyway yeah they live in my head rent free. impulse went into the forest bc he was bored and didn't come back for three months because he was fucking the resident elf OKJIUYRF the village thought he was dead -tn (hey im still alive, crazy. also feel free to make this angsty. i mean. scar is last life coded its going to be angsty no matter what)

Impulse has never felt like he belongs. Having to hide such an intrinsic part of himself his entire life isn't easy. But it means he's learned to have an open mind about things. He's sure people would think differently of him if they knew the truth. But he knows he's not a bloodthirsty creature out for souls - why should he believe other stereotypes?

He doesn't realise who Scar is when he follows him into the forest. Only that a customer had left something behind at his blacksmith, so he hurries after him as the sun sets and the workday comes to a close. The customer is one of his favourites, actually. Impulse always enjoys having a natter, and whilst the guy pushes it with his bartering, it's impossible to be mad. He's got charisma to him, and no fear of using it. Impulse is jealous.

He didn't expect the crooked tower where Scar lives. Nor the undead flowers lining the walls, or the skeleton of a cat that greets him at the door. Literally, it meows at him and brushes his leg.

The elf comes rushing down shortly after, feet clicking beneath a call of, "Jellie! Come back here."

Impulse watches as the cat crosses the threshold of the tower and transforms. Though translucent, it's like a new skin has formed. Soft fur and grumpy looking eyes turn to meow at her apparent owner. Said owner who is looking at Impulse with his mouth hanging open in shock.

Impulse gives an awkward wave, mumbling a, "Hi, I just wanted to return this to you. You left it at the shop, and I know you usually have it on you so I thought you might miss it and I didn't want you to worry-"

Scar interrupts him by threatening his life and everybody he's ever loved if Impulse tells a soul. Impulse stares at Scar as if he's grown a second head that can't tell Impulse is a head or two taller than him, far more muscular, and that's whilst looking human.

Hey, a secret for a secret, right? It's been a long time since Impulse met another magical folk. This will be the start of a blossoming relationship, he's sure of it!

Idk if Icebergs are still popular, but does a NaruHina Fic Iceberg post sound fun to you?

Basically, there's like 5 or 6 tiers (there should be a template readily available in google images) and you assign specific media (in this case, NH fics) to each tier, descending from tame tho troubling to 'stare into the abyss'-level awful. 😅

The order of the fics within each category sorta matters to me, but if I thought about it harder, I'd probably change things around, so the order's not that important. And in general, the categories go from NaruHina getting hurt, to NaruHina hurting others, to NaruHina hurting each other. With a few exceptions! But if someone else were to rank this, they might categorize things differently.

It's all just my feeling. As you can see. By the category titles.

A curious Hinata finally had enough and followed him to an underground house. A house she finds herself trapped in, with a dark Naruto. Curiosity Killed the Cat.

part one

Back in black bitches, hello again. CW: I make allusions to shooting an orangutan, but none are actually shot. Is that kind of day here at König Brainrot HQ.

Queer.

His name is Leopold Königsbacher bc I feel Leopold is a horrid name to saddle a gawky weird-ass little kid with, and it doesn’t get much better as an adult. Hates being called Leopold or Leo, someone called him Poldy once and he never talked to that person again, but he depending on the person, he will answer to Lee.

I personally see his face as looking something like Jeremy Allen White’s, but y’know. Significantly more roughed up.

Sub-point: he could honestly be any weird lookin’ white guy with creepy eyes, it doesn’t matter.

Unlike the data mined Ghost face reveal, which I love with all of my heart and keep in a locket on my neck, I can’t accept the data mined König face reveal bc it looks too much like dudes I grew up with. All I can think is, “That man has dip in his lip and a spit bottle in his shirt pocket.” Which is a shame bc it is a good face.

Callsigns as I understand them aren’t really supposed to be related to a person’s actual name, but they can be kind of mocking in nature. So I picture him getting König from his last name was intended for mockery and to degrade him. King of a pile of shit, basically.

Hyper aware of doing anything that could be seen as embarrassing by other people. Movements, weird vocal tics or flubs, how he’s standing, what he’s looking at. Breathing. Avoids doing it if he can, but if that’s impossible, he’ll do them aggressively, bc generally people will avoid someone aggro. When an asshole does something embarrassing assholeishly it becomes scary.

Crooked ears.

Just kinda crashing through life with half-assed ideas instead of plans. He was really banking on becoming a sniper, and that achieving it would suddenly kick some enlightenment and maturity into his ass thereby fixing him. Probably expected that he’d have a house, spouse, and fam by now in the alternate reality where he succeeded. Since he didn’t, he’s just sorta fuckin’ around in a holding pattern as a bachelor in a suburban rental he pays too much for.

Ambivalent towards cats. True neutral. Can take them or leave them.

Fuckin’ loves bears though. Loves a dumbass lookin’ sun bear and will chew your ear off with sun bear atrocity stories.

Also is a rat/ferret/lizard/snake dude. Tell me he has any distinct feelings on feeding pinkies to an albino morph ball python and I will assert that he is thinking, “Food für baby 😊”

Oh my god did everyone else know that emojis could get smalled? Am I the last person to find this out?

I’m giving him this one from me too: he will shoot an orangutan on sight. Hates them. Creep him out hardcore. All other primates are good to go, but orangutans are born destined to rot hell.

Starcraft player, former disgusting League of Legends player. S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Metro, and CS:GO aficionado. VTMB and Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas lover.

Doesn’t fuck with alcohol or alcoholics, but had/has a binge drinking problem - the duality of man. LOOOOVES uppers though, and doesn’t know that Battle Rage is just Military Meth, he’s somewhat strung out on it when he doesnt take leave as often as he should.

Buys shoes and clothes in bulk when he finds them in his size. Has 3 sets of tennis shoes in the back of his closet and 6 pairs of hiking boots/regular boots for KorTac work.

So I'm copy-pasting my own essay I added onto another post to post on my own. But the amount of people out here who truly DON'T understand the historical importance of WTNV, from a queer media perspective, boggles me.

I want you to imagine the year is 2012. Gay marriage won't be legalized for another three years. A podcast starts to make the rounds, your friends are watching it so you think sure. Let's check it out. And then you here the narrator start to talk about the new scientist in town. And right there, in the first introduction, they make it clear. "And I fell in love instantly." There was no building up, no hiding it, no queerbaiting. Right there in the first episode they told us that Cecil was Gay and in love with Another Man.

And if you weren't there then there arent WORDS for how ground breaking this was at the time. How amazing it was for the tumblrbase, consisting largely of closeted/ discovering pre-teens, to hear this. The finale of Legend of Korra, where two women holding hands was GROUND BREAKING?? That wouldn't happen for another two years. This wasn't an everyday occurrence and hell, I would argue even today, a whole decade later, there still aren't many pieces of media doing it like wtnv was (and still is).

Not to mention in horror media, queerness is traditionally used to notate something scary. The scary lesbian woo'ing another woman and killing her was a horror trope for a reason. In media queerness is used as almost exclusively as a corrupting, disgusting, force. But Cecil's queerness wasn't just loved, it was celebrated within the media itself. His love interest was a 'normal' guy from out of town but Cecil's oddities are why Carlos loves him. Every aspect of Night Vale is odd, is queer, and that queerness becomes acceptably mundane in a beautiful way. The entirety of Night Vale of a concept was taking all that was Queer and celebrating it.

And in greater terms of media, Welcome To Night Vale is what single-handedly changed podcasts from 'the thing your dad listened to' to something interesting and accessible to young people. It practically introduced the concept of narrative podcasts and is still the roadmap many of them use today. Massive media like The Magnus Archives, The Penumbra Podcast, and hell I would argue even the popularity of other media like TAZ? It only happened because WTNV brought not just an audience to podcasts, but a QUEER audience. A queer audience who, once they were old enough, only needed a mic and cheap editing software to start making their own queer content just as fast as they were consuming everyone else's.

But back to 'sexyman'. Again. Tumblr's base is 12-14. And we're given not just the first gay character most of us have ever seen. But a dutiful boyfriend who loves his husband and his cat. Who gets into silly little squabbles with his silly little nemesis. Who's CHARMING. Of course the internet fell in love. But beyond his personality. He had the Homestuck/ Bill Cipher/ Wheatley bonus of not having a canon design. People keep mentioning he's faceless as a weird element but that was the DRAW back then. It was an INTEGRAL part of the appeal. Sure, the basic 'blonde white twink' design was/is the most popular- it was 2012- but some people got creative. No matter what your attraction was too, you could picture him looking like that. He's a good boyfriend AND he's hot?

Sure, The Onceler was insanely popular and so was Sans. But people were either lusting for them or Hated them. But Cecil?? Cecil was our hot gay mentor. He was the closest thing a lot of younger queers on tumblr had for an adult queer role model. He was the basis for so other tumblr sexymen.

Okay. alright, I needed a separate post to go in detail, because now I'm pumped! BTW I only quickly looked up the bijuus’ references to have some guidance, so they might not be all exact, I also went a bit by their appearaces alone.

Unfortunately I can’t fit the number of tails, but this is a great excuse for me to ramble about these lovely myths to anyone interested.

Ichibi Shukaku, the shapeshifting tanuki - I might be probably forgeting some, but I decided to go with an animal I like. It kinda matches how bloodthirsty Shukaku was in the begining, but it’s a bird instead. Matinta Pereira is a little owl (sometimes mistaken or also described as a potoo) that brings the news of death. Sometimes it takes the shape of a witch, other times is an old man seeking petty regenge. Another nice detail: since both tanukis and kitsunes are somewhat tricksters, the Matinta is actually sometimes related to the creature I chose for Kyuubi too.

Nibi Matatabi, the cat ghost - The obvious here would be to go with the Alma-de-gato (Cat soul) which is literally a shadow or spectral cat that appears to haunt children who misbehave, silently staring into their souls with (literal) burning eyes. Totally fits and I’d be happy with it. BUT if we take what looks the most like the beast in the series and just overall vibe, I’d have to go with Boitatá. Nothing to do with cats, just a giant fire snake with its body covered in eyes. This myth is actually closely related to the will-o'-wisp so many times the fire is made blue

Anon says “Boitatá would make a fucking awesome bijuu let’s be honest” and that is true! Boitatá IS one of my favorite myths for a reason! Not only it looks badass the legend says the snake protects fields and forests from anyone trying to set illegal fires by blinding them, or driving them into madness or just straight up killing them.

Sanbi Isobu, the sea demon - Here I picked the Ipupiará who’s basically another sea demon, though more humanoid, kind of resembling a mermaid, but more of a walrus shaped one. There are multiple stories and creatures similar to this one, but I like the older and more murderous version for this. Option TWO is another one of my favorites (another giant snake, of course it’s another snake): Boiúna, the black snake. A huge, river long, pitch black snake with flame red eyes, that just scares anyone living by the rivers by sinking ships or straight up swallowing them. Neither of these has any moral or motivation, they’re just beasts.

Yonbi Son Goku, the monkey king - For this one I went with the idea of an “Imposing monkey-like creature” and got: Mapinguari, this huge, smelly, man devouring monster. These monsters, mostly known in the amazon region, easily stand at over 2 meters tall, sometimes depicted with a single eye in the forehead and with a huge mouth full of razor sharp teeth stretching all the way to the bellybutton. They attract the prey by screaming like desperate humans and deceiving people to go help. To have this one as a source of power is nice, but wouldn’t be nearly as respectable as the original.

Gobi Kokuou, Hanging horse head and ghost whale - Okay so a horse. that’s easy: Mula sem cabeça, literally a Headless horse, with fire coming out of its neck. This one is widely known in the country so it has many MANY variations, but the shape is what matters here, so ‘only head horse’ for ‘no head horse’. Not sure how to fit the whale ghost part :(

Rokubi Saiken, the shellfish ogre - Alamoa! I’ve been told not many people know about this one?? But searching for this shellfish ogre, the wiki description fits quite perfectly with the Alamoa. She is a storm (thunder? lightning?) ghost, who appears on stormy nights dancing naked in the beaches of Fernando de Noronha. She is very pale and with near white blonde hair and attracts fishermen with her beauty and treasures, only to trap them and turn into an skeleton before killing them.

Nanabi Choumei, a rhinoceros beetle - This one was surprisingly hard, but let’s go with a simple one: Minhocão (literally big worm). Huge worm like creature living in rivers or underground that also goes around sinking ships. I would also take the ‘lucky seven’ joke and turn it around by using Caapora (out of the numerous names, this is the one I’m most familiar with), who is said to bring bad luck! Caapora can be an angry little girl, a creature with red skin and hair or even a cyclops, they ride a boar (queixada) and cause depression and bad luck to whoever meets them.

Hachibi Gyuki, the cow demon - Immediate choice: Boi Bumbá (with many name variations). It’s an annual performance/celebration telling the story of death and ressucitation of an ox. There’s a lot of dance and colorful outfits involved so it makes for a nice visual for a magical beast. BUT I also remembered a more regional one called Boi Vaquim: a winged bull with golden horns and diamonds for eyes that spits fire. How badass is that?

Fun fact: ‘boi’ is the actual portuguese word for bull/ox, but in native tupí language ‘boi’ stands for snake so we have the snakes boitatá and boiúna.

Kyuubi Kurama, the kitsune - Absolutely NOTHING to do with foxes, but I’m going to pick Saci! Simply for the trickster nature. Sacis are probably the most famous supernatural creature in brazilian mythology. They vary in shape (can be human or have goat horns and beard or bird foot), size (from tiny little fairies living in flowers to 2m tall with scales and claws), power (can create small tornadoes, grant wishes, spoil food), nature (they go from harmless and inconvenient pranks to kidnapping children and beating up animals to death), but the base look is of a pitch black humanoid creature - most times a black boy - with a single leg and red pointy hat. Option two for visuals: Maned wolf.

🪸 erghan diado (song of schopsko) by bulgarian state television choir: we are starting off this list so insanely strong. i have no idea what made spotify assume i would like this but they were 100% correct. apparently this choir performs modern arrangements of traditional bulgarian folk melodies, and this song is from one of their most recognized projects. four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🪸 choreomania by florence + the machine: i was surprised to see this song was written before the pandemic, but it turns out that welch based this off of the dancing plague of 1518, where 400 women danced themselves to death. what a cool coincidence that she released a song based on a phenomenon ppl theorize occurred as a result of plague-related stress post-covid. obsessed with the behind-the-scenes info, and the song is catchy. four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🪸 becky by be your own pet: HOLY SHIT. ohhh no. “i heard u talked a lot of shit abt me / to ur new best friend / but it doesn’t matter anyway / cos i’ll find a new best friend / … but, you know, i gotta say / i loved going to your slumber party” this is fucking me up. childhood friends are like runaway cats u keep hanging up missing posters but u’ll never get them back. “he doesn’t miss carol not really or rather he doesn’t miss the woman she’s making herself into. kid carol tho … he misses that version of her sometimes” etc etc. this is reminding me so much of those homoerotic friendships i had at 8 with other girls that always ended in catastrophe, but i still remember their landline numbers. five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🪸 bury a friend by pomplamoose: i’m pretty positive this was recommended to me based on my obsession with loveless’s version of happier than ever. i love a good cover, and that one is fabulous. it adds a brutal new dimension to an already angry song. they bring a great alt rock/emo pop twist to it that i adore. despite how good a cover this one is, i can’t say i love it—i might be a little biased; eilish’s original is haunting and nightmarish and it puts everything it can into creeping u out. i don’t think this cover adds any new flavor the way loveless’ does. it mostly makes me want to listen to the original again. one star ⭐️

🪸 the ghost of chicago by noah floersch: this song is appealing to my love of the midwest. it wasn’t what i was expecting going in but i like it! it’s cute. i know it’s meant to be a “i like this girl so much that she haunts me” kinda ghost song, but tbh i like the idea of the narrator falling in love w an actual ghost much more. it reminds me of this wip i have where—no. i shan’t say. it’s a secret. three stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

🪸 dizzy in sunlight by the blasting company, ashley nguyen dewitt: now THAT is how u make a dreamy, sunday-afternoon-esque song. the lyrics remind me of a mary oliver poem. “wade in the water / mud covered feet,” “the wind and my mother / they both hold me upright / …oh what a feeling / as the waters / rush over me,” “my sister riding her bike from the store / my grandfather smoking his pope out on the porch / …this life spills over me / and rocks me to sleep”. completely and utterly lovely. five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🪸 in dreams by sierra ferrell: i love the country and folk elements in this. i’m currently on a country music fixation and this is right up my alley. such a sweet-sounding love song, i added it to one of my playlists right away. four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🪸 neutral spirit hotel by local news legend: omg this reminds me so much of some of my favorite penelope scott songs—sweet hibiscus tea comes to mind; both of these songs are folksy and have this self-deprecating element to them. “i think i say i’m quitting drinking every other week / but it’s so hard to stop / when it’s the only thing that let’s me sleep” dean winchester type shit (sorry). three stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

🪸 down in the willow garden by the kossoy sisters: HELL YES a strong finish!! this is a traditional appalachian murder ballad about a guy facing the gallows after poisoning his sweetheart and throwing her body in a river. is me liking this song a loss for feminism? in case you haven’t heard, lizzo (and two other members of her tour) have been named in a lawsuit from three of her former dancers, alleging that that lizzo has sexually harassed them and created a hostile work environment. in the wake of this news, hundreds of lizzo’s fans are feeling betrayed in realizing that the woman who has built her career and her brand on making women feel empowered and loved, no matter their body type, shape, or color, is actually fatphobic and racist in private.

i think it’s important to note that, for the remainder of this post, i am strictly talking about how artists treat their fans, recent or older scandals notwithstanding.

after reading this news last night and this morning, i’ve had a lot of thoughts regarding women in music and their relationships to their fans. we’ve seen similar situations of fans fleeing from fandom when stars stray lately: ariana grande, doja cat, and now lizzo.

i will say, it was always very refreshing to see the rhetoric and love and acceptance from lizzo for women, for black women, for all black people. it always made me happy that there was finally someone, besides the obvious stars like beyoncé, on the stage who could represent often-sidelined groups that way and help them find strength and joy. it’s incredibly upsetting to think that may have just been a marketing decision, that her fans who found trust in her may have been pawns to her fame. that’s not a way to treat fans. this, in the wake of the fallout of doja cat and her fans, just shows that there’s not many artists who view fans as humans. i think that’s why there’s not a lot of lasting pop music women anymore. if you look at the careers of taylor swift and beyoncé, they’re still here because they treated their fans, time and time again, like they mattered.

fans want connection, that’s why we seek out music and artists with stories like ours. what a lot of musicians forget is that fans can make a career, but they can also break it. regrettably, i haven’t followed beyoncé for her entire career, but i can speak to the experience of being a lifelong taylor swift fan. i won’t say she’s NEVER disappointing (white feminism, performative activism at times, dating matty healy…) but i can say she has ALWAYS known that her fans are everything to her career. from 13-hour long meet and greets to the 1989 secret sessions to talking to her fans online to releasing or performing certain songs because her fans ask for them, sending fans money to pay rent or their tuition… nearly all she does is for her fans or dedicated to them in some way. her loyal fans are how she survived 2016, when she nearly lost her career. staying true to her fans is how she’s bounced back from losing her masters and how her career has rebounded to be better than ever before.

being a smart businesswoman and having musical talent is only part of the career. fans are CRUCIAL to a lasting, enduring career and no women in music have shown that better than taylor swift and beyoncé. taylor and beyoncé are undoubtedly THE stars of this generation and it’s not only because they’re incredible businesswomen and very talented, but also because they know and recognize that fans are more than monetary value and seat fillers at concerts. it’s actual connection with fans that allows stars to remain stars and newer artists don’t seem to realize that. lizzo is sitting somewhere right now, realizing that she’s lost hundreds of fans, and IF she recovers legally from this lawsuit, her career will still never recover. no artist has even a hope of being as famous or as lasting as taylor or beyoncé if they don’t follow the perfectly laid steps. and, to be fair, there’s artists on slightly lower levels of fame doing their careers right too, who very well may become household name musical legends like beyoncé and taylor. halsey, harry styles, sabrina carpenter (as far as i know), i would’ve likely said ariana grande prior to her whole homewrecking scandal (only because ariana’s fans loved her and she seemed to love them, but she is very problematic to the general public).

i think there’s a disturbing trend in music, especially pop music, where anyone can become famous but they tend to forget that fans are the ones buying or streaming the music, the ones selling out concert venues, the ones spreading the word... fans are the key to a career in music.

I’ve had a lot of fun recently coming with with female mercenary characters for TF2. I really liked where the concept art was going with making them all individual characters rather than simply “if the characters were women”

The design style is fantastic for distinct simplicity so I tried limiting myself to basic colours and shapes to make these

and I’m pretty confident they pass the silhouette test!

Heavy

Name: Marie Jarrett

Age: Mid 30s-40s

Height: 6’5

Nationality: American (Hawai’i)

Bio: Raised in Hawai’i, growing up she developed more and more drastic measures to fend off the tourists swarming her home. Land mines, electric gates, guard dogs, none could stop them for long until she picked up her trusty minigun to send her message. But even still, she hears the click of cameras in the night.

Eventually, she left her home to explore the world. Enthralled with the image of seeing different wonders across different countries, she’s always disappointed. She’s travelled every continent and still finds nothing that lives up to her expectations. No place, no person. She’s outgoing and open to new experiences, only she usually hates them.

Mercenary life is a great opportunity to earn money, see sights, meet new people and kill them after they don’t meet your expectations. She hates New Mexico and takes every opportunity to destroy the buildings and insult her employer’s tastes. She finds some people she tolerates within the mercenaries as she hasn’t yet visited where they live. However much she hides it, she has a deep, instinctual fear of the Engineer.

Soldier

Name: Linda Smith

Age: Early 40s

Height: 5’10

Nationality: Canadian

Bio: Canada’s perfect woman… or so she claims. The star of war propaganda posters and clearly decided for the role because of her great tactical assets. She’s there to motivate people into the fight. To spread the glory of Canada and inspire her allies. She believes she has higher orders than anyone else she’s working for (ignoring the fact she hasn’t heard from them for a good few years) and is determined to follow them to the letter. She may have lost the letter but she remembers it good enough.

She represents the ideals of Canada: polite, friendly, apologetic, and pacifistic. None of these are contradicted by how she throws around rockets. That’s not what Canada means. She’s superior to everyone around her and graciously educates them on how to improve through example. She loves her French and British allies and will kindly tell the Americans how to be better.

She’s motivating and actually fairly competent, it’s just that competency might be misdirected. She’s damn good at rocket jumping, shooting her shotgun, and supporting her team, it’s just that you really need to get it in her head when she’s meant to be doing it.

Scout

Name: Patricia “Pat” Herald

Age: 50s-60s

Height: 5’4

Nationality: English

Bio: In her years, Patricia has learnt fear… and she’s learnt to laugh in its face. She wakes up at the crack of dawn, ready to leave at the drop of a hat, boots polished and laced the night before. Her years have taught her that with a gun and Jeremy by her side, she can survive!

The postal route of Appleby-in-Westmorland.

She’s been chased by geese, dogs, cows, elderly ladies, and when her postal route had her delivering post during the war, she developed a taste for blood. Nothing will stop her from delivering her post on time. Every day before 6am, every postbox will have their letters and parcels. One chucked across barbed wire, another house jumped over a river, another house miles into the country with dogs on her heels, she WILL get there and she’ll get there FAST.

But after a couple of decades, she needs a change of scenery, and the Gravels wars are just the holiday she’s needed. With her trusty black and white cat by her side (ignoring the yowling and scratches) she reckons it’ll be great time to enjoy herself.

Pyro

Name: Nikephoros Papadopoulos

Age: Late 20s

Nationality: Greek

Bio: Survival of the fittest. Nature gives and nature taketh away. If you’re not prepared for that, well, Pyro is more than happy to teach you the lesson. They embody the old values of the Greek gods: f*ck or fire. She indulges her every whim and unfortunately for the people around her it often involves arson.

One year for the Olympic games, she was given the noble title of torchbearer. On complete coincidence, the Olympics shifted to primarily water sports. Underwater sprints became the hot new trend!

She’s merry and chatty, never missing the opportunity to talk to other people about herself and her world view. She can’t wait to spread her gospel to help other people improve themselves (though she always gets a laugh out of those who go out screaming in the flames). She can’t help it if she has a sadistic side.

Engineer

Name: Mikawo Kojima

Age: Early 20s

Height: 5’0

Nationality: Japanese

Bio: Japan’s early-rising industrial revolutions in technology are best exemplified in Mikawo, a young upstart determined to rise to the top, learning everything she can and building the best of the best. Unfortunately, she’s never been the most creative but when you happen upon other people’s blueprints and happen to construct them first, what does it matter who came up with the “concept”?

At first, she appears to be every bit the quiet and demure young woman people expect, only when silk hides steel, that steel is a massive automatic sentry gun. She’s motivated by a distinct contempt for the people who get in her way. Especially those who try to be better than her. She enjoys the flexibility of English, especially the cusses, and she has no reservations about swearing up a storm, even if she still refuses to give a straight rejection, preferring instead to give a small “I’ll think about it.”

Demo

Name: Qingzhao Zeng

Age: Late 40s

Height: 5’3

Nationality: Chinese

Bio: The Zeng family has a long-standing family trade in demolitions and explosives, traced down the line all the way to the Song dynasty. Luckily, Qingzhao has sisters so, you know, it’s not all that important. She doesn’t even have to stop smoking and drinking. She hasn’t blown herself up (that much) so clearly, it’s working. Precision is for other people to worry about. She’s apathetic to a T, having seen everything. Measurements come from the heart. A pinch of gunpowder there, a splash of paint there.

Her family has a deep-seated rivalry with the DeGroots. Long ago in ancient China, a Zeng matriarch woke up in a cold sweat, a message from the stars to let them know of their Scottish rivals. Due to being a continent away from each other, the families have actually met each other only a handful of times, but the hatred needs to be kept up because, what if?

Turns out, Qingzhao has met Tavish even before finding employment under the Mann brothers. One drunken night, the two of them had a short, whirlwind friendship, sharing secrets and declaring each other to be their best friends. Luckily for them, they both forgot the night, merrily hating each other as tradition dictates. However, headaches and flashes of this terrible night haunt them both. Could they really get over centuries of hate and become friends?

Absolutely not.

Sniper

Name: Ansa Aaltonen

Age: 27

Height: 6’2

Nationality: Finnish

Bio: Snow. Sugar. Cocaine. Her life is run by many white powders. Ansa is a professional sniper, with a sharp eye and a steady hand… when she isn’t also high as a kite, lost in the snowy wilderness of Finland and screeching to the sky. When you’re up in the dark and cold, you need something to give you a little pep in your step. It just so happens Ansa liked having a bit more pep than most.

She’s there for a THRILL. There’s nothing better to get your heart pumping at 200 beats per second than a good headshot, embracing the chill, and a hit of sugar. She no longer feels the cold or heat or even pain, shrugging it off until she collapses. It just makes her feel alive. She’s efficient, fast, and determined to get her kicks.

She has an unusual taste, living off fermented fish and tree bark. To most people around the Finnish wilderness, she’s nothing more than an urban legend, but she’s very real and she’s looking for some excitement, happily found in employment in the Gravel wars.

Spy

Name: Yvonne Pleshette [Real name N/A]

Age: 30s

Height: 5’8

Nationality: American (California)

Bio: The silver screen calls to his woman and she’s happy to answer. She trains herself to act in every possible role she can, having a wide range of accents, body languages, and backstories. To truly test herself, she gave up her identity long ago. Lately she’s been going by the name “Yvonne.”

The world of Hollywood is cutthroat and full of backstabbers so she learnt to cut throats and stab backs. While some people tell her the terms are metaphorical, nothing else has given her more roles. Living the mercenary life is simply gathering research for her roles (and earning some much-needed money in the process).

She presents herself as a classic film star, despite being a minor name at best, mostly because she’s always changing it. She has high standards but a cheapskate personality. She’s a bit of a bitch, happily criticising others, especially if they’re working with her. What can she say? She’s a diva.

Medic

Name: Susan Monks

Age: 30-40s

Height: 5’7

Nationality: American (New Jersey)

Bio: The American Healthcare system. Is there a more glorious sight? The exploitation of pain. The money. The debt. The fear it strikes into the entire population it’s designed to help. To Susan, there’s nothing better. She squeezes every last drop from the people she helps, working on a purely transactional lifestyle. She’ll never help someone unless she has all of their insurance information and the payment secure in her bank, and god forbid she ever accept help. It’s not like she can afford her own prices.

She’s very self-aware of her own corruption and proud of it, though she refuses to be exploited in the same way, suspicious of anything “free” but also doing her best not to pay for anything.

That said, she doesn’t much care for how good a job she does. In her eyes, asking for surgery is one thing. Asking for successful surgery is another. She has a variety of skills in both cosmetic and military medicine. She just wishes the license board would stop sending her “malpractice” letters. Ugh, stick to your own business. “Disappearing” all their messengers is becoming a pain.

3-Sentence Fics: Top 10 Favorite ‘Lees of 2021

So you may recall that I made a list of my favorite lees that I wrote about in my first year of being on Tumblr.

I’ve got a couple fic/headcanon requests that I’m working on right now (next up is a Xiaolin Showdown one!), but just to blow off some steam in between projects, I thought I’d come up with a few little micro-drabbles for characters I like. :)

Neytiri (James Cameron’s Avatar)

The blue Pandoran natives all gathered in a circle, their legs crossed, chanting and bowed in reverence to Eywa, and the bored Jake could not get Neytiri to break her concentration or pay attention to him…so he decided to have a little fun.

Slowly, the tip of his tail dragged across Neytiri’s bare foot, and suddenly, the Na’vi princess let out a loud, giggling snort and leapt into the air, blushing and bug-eyed.

The other Omaticaya stared at her in disapproval, and Jake chuckled under his breath as she furiously slapped his arm.

Ursula (Kiki’s Delivery Service)

“Wow, you’ve really never done a sculpture like this before?” Kiki asked with delight as she watched her artist friend slap wet clay into the shape of a dreamlike creature…another fantasy piece inspired by her.

“No, but I think it’s coming together well, so don’t distract me!” Ursula replied, but of course, her comment just inspired the giggly witch to reach forward and pinch her sides.

“Eh-HAA-Heheh, Heh…Hehey, no tickling, Heheh Ha-Ha Ha!” the artist began to laugh gleefully and squirmed around her sculpture, ticklish vibrations wiggling across her belly.

Kiki (same)

“AHH, Ha-Ha Ha-Ha! *gasp* Ha-HUH-Heh! *gasp* Ha-Ha Ha!” Kiki shrieked with hysterical laughter and flailed around in the grass.

Tombo and his punk friends were holding the poor witch girl’s ankles down and taking turns tickling her feet relentlessly, and she couldn’t do anything to hide her embarrassment despite her attempts to kick them away.

While the others laughed and teased Kiki about how absurdly ticklish she was, the widest, goofiest smile Kiki had ever seen was plastered all over Tombo’s face…he could only giggle along with her.

Link (The Legend of Zelda)

Once, while tumbling away from concussive laser blasts, Link was grabbed by the ankle and hoisted into the air by the claw of a Guardian.

The clunky machine had been programmed to seek out other Sheikah technology, and unsure of what it was doing, it extended another claw to ruffle through Link’s tunic as the hero dangled upside down.

Link fought to keep from laughing, but the Guardian was probing the ticklish spots on his ribs and stomach, and it took him a second to fire an arrow at the machine’s eye and break free.

Victoria (Cats 2019)

Jellylorum was fitting Victoria for a new pair of tap shoes so that she could join in Skimbleshanks’ dance routine, but every time the tape measure pulled against her lily-white foot, Victoria couldn’t stop herself from laughing…and Jelly loved it.

“Awww, what’s the matter…” teased the giggly orange tabby in her most brutally sing-songy baby voice, “…does someone have ticklish toes?”

“Mmmm, Hmhm-Hm-Hm!! *squeak* Wait wait, j-just give me a sehecond!” Victoria giggled, blushed, and pulled at her ears in a panicked frenzy, struggling to sit still, and it was obvious to her by then that Jelly was tickling her soles on purpose.

Lady Dimitrescu (Resident Evil 8age)

“HO-Ho Ha-Ha Ha! *heave* HA-HA HA-HA!! R-RELEASE ME! Ah-Haha!! I COMMAND YOU!!” came the loud, booming laughter that echoed throughout metallic halls.

Claire Redfield had wrapped her whole right arm around Lady Dimitrescu’s foot, mercilessly tickling it with her strumming nails, and it wiggled and flexed but couldn’t escape.

The tall vampire lady had been taken to a BSAA laboratory and restrained in the medical bay for scientific study, and (perhaps out of a warped desire to make her suffer) Claire was surprisingly eager to assist in the neural conductivity tests.

Luca & Alberto (Luca)

Alberto sat in the sand with his legs spread apart, biting his lip in determination, and Luca started tickling his left foot, which began to wiggle.

“Remember you gotta hold still for one minute; that’s the rule!” Luca laughed, skittering green fingers around his friend’s toes.

“PFFFF; Heehee-Heehee Heehee! *gasp* AHHHH!! ….Hnhn-Hn! *gasp* Hihih-Hihih! Heehee! *gasp* Ahhhh; it tick-llllllles!” the blue and purple fish boy couldn’t control his giggling as he thrashed around.

“Alright; now it’s your turn!” laughed the eager and vengeful Alberto as he grabbed the ankle of his reclining friend. Looking around toward a patch a grass nearby, Alberto saw a cattail plant dancing in the wind, and quickly seized it to use as a tickle weapon.

“…Heh! *gasp* Heheh-Haha Haha-Haha Haha! …Heh! Heheh-Heh!” Luca doubled over, giggling and clutching his tummy while the plant stroked up and down on his foot, much to Alberto’s glee.

Lisa (Ponyo)

Thanks to her chaotic schedule, it wasn’t uncommon for Lisa to collapse face-down on her couch and immediately start snoring…so she sometimes missed things. Sosuke called out “mom” multiple times in a row as if he were reenacting that famous Stewie Griffin moment, gently shaking her shoulders and poking her, but nothing had an effect until his fingertip casually jabbed her side.

Lisa immediately sprung to life, her bed-head all askew, giggling and tossing pillows aside, which was quite a fun discovery for Sosuke & Ponyo (who had no idea that she was that ticklish).

Toph (the other Avatar)

One of the fun things about Momo was his ability to noiselessly glide through the air…the better to sneak up on Toph and land on her back.

“GYAHH HA-HA HA-HA!! *heave* HA-HA HA-HaaAaAaAaaang, g-het your mangy fleabahag OFF ME!!” the Earthbender screamed and fell to the ground, pounding her fist and sending shards of rock everywhere.

Momo had been thrown at her and was scurrying around in a panic, his four limbs scratching and grabbing all over Toph’s back and sides, but unfortunately for her, the other Gaang members were having far too much fun just watching her get tickled.

I totally would have included Kate Bishop on this list bc she’s literally perfect, but unfortunately I didn’t start writing about her until after my anniversary post. 😆
