R.I.P. Kazuki Takahashi, as an artist and a person. + thought on Yu-gi-oh! (random rambling)

The creator for Yu-gi-oh!, Kazuki Takahashi, recently passed away on July 6. Feeling this sort of quiet sadness and tinge of disbelief, even though I don’t think it’s crazy that this can just happen. (like anything could happen in life, right?)

Rambling reflections on Kazuki Takahashi and Yu-gi-oh!:

I remember really loving the series, and I think it was the first anime that I liked that touched on the dark side of humans (which I continue to have some interest in, like the psychological aspect). Recently, a family member started watching the series. It’s dub and yeah, I prefer the original uncut version. But it was still pretty fun watching it again, even with the dub cut. 

His artwork (particularly like after the series, and recently had actually discovered his Instagram) struck me as dynamic and fun, which I like and hope to sometimes make mine like that too. Looking from a blog translating his posts, I feel like he was an artist who created freely. Which I really like and have been giving more thoughts to such a thing recently (like what does it mean to be an artist? What’s an artist’s spirit? What’s important when it comes to making art? etc). It was a delight to see his posts on creating his own games (designing the layout and 3-d printing it etc), and various other things that he made. 

Don’t really know the man, but he seemed like a chill and fun guy. I think his series really touched on becoming a better person, self improvement, pulling through the darker moments, friendships, and what the cycle of hate + inequality can do (probably more but these come to my mind. And I think these themes maybe speak about who Takahashi might have been as a person).

I like that he also wanted to personally stop creating the series after Yugi and Yami’s story ended. (Still was involved with the card games and like looking over/sort of supervising the continuation of the series, but far as I’m aware, not like hands on actually creating/working on the series like before). Yu-gi-oh! wasn’t supposed to be primarily a card game series and from what I read, his editor really wanted him to continue that way. Which he agreed/thought the same way(?), and reworked the series, but he told his editor how he wants to complete Yugi and Yami’s story. And he will consider having finish making the series after that happens. 

Yeah, it sounds dramatic hogwash for a series primarily aim for like teens that is based on magical monster card games with a protagonist that has that kind of hairstyle, but I don’t think it really matters how it looks or seems to appear, it could have still spoke to anyone. Just depends on who the viewer is and how willing they are to give it a shot to enjoy watching it. (I admit, the series was more like a fun viewing for me than something life ground breaking. But I enjoyed the moments of strong friendship and Yugi becoming a stronger person. Including seeing how Yugi turn out to be, from his illustrations for Instagram, it gave me some warm feelings). 

Anyway, I wish his family and friends well and the strength for handling any affairs due to his passing. Due to personal reason, I might put this post on private another time. Don’t know, but for now, I just felt like letting this out. (I think I could have worded some things better for this rambling, but well, it’s a rambling...) 

Rest in peace, Kazuki Takahashi. 🖤

1: share a song that makes you think of...

Did you have a specific one in mind you wanted to ask about? For this one though, I'll go with a more recent piece - both Godsmack's Under Your Scars and Seal's Kiss From a Rose both get me thinking about kintsugi. To get a little more specific, the former when Reilena notices the peek of one of Vincent's scars that he's tried to hide, and then when he gives her permission to undo his shirt and bare some of them to her, and the latter is when the piece turns more tender and sweet heat, the quiet end of the song going with Vincent's silent 'thank you' as they fall asleep in each other's arms.

5: what's a fic idea you've had that you will never write?

That is a very good one, because I'll generally jot down any idea I have, it just depends on whether or not it ever GOES anywhere, so I can't really say I'd NEVER write it, lol. I have notes for a werewolf AU - literally just a single scene - and then a random Tekken/FFVII scene that I still kinda want to put to paper just because I really like it (and it hammers in that Vincent Valentine would make more sense in the Tekkenverse than Akuma ever would, yes I am still very salty about him being randomly stuck in the Mishima storyline no I will not get over it, lol).

I have a bad tendency to put fics on indefinite hiatus more than just not write them - I have 3 multichaps that have been abandoned for different reasons, but I still have the notebooks and writing for them if I ever wanted to pick them back up (and I still know how one of them ends, even though I never wrote the actual ending, lol).

That said, I have a couple AUs with a former RP partner that I've put on a permanent backburner because they bring up pretty iffy memories. So I think we'll go with that. I'll never write (more) for those; the notes and scenarios that have been written will just stay in their folder for now.

18: what's one of your favorite lines that you've written in a fic?

'If it is a sin to love another, then may I be forever damned.' Wrote it in an unfinished Ancient Egypt Yuugiou canon/oc fic literal decades ago, and it still sticks with me to this day. Will I ever manage to work it into another fic? Hopefully, because I feel that it could work with Vincent and Reilena, too.

For You I Will - Honda Hiroto & Bakura Ryou

w00t!  First skin of the new year!

And it's a Protectshippy skin!  This is one of my favorite YGO pairings, but it's so underappreciated!  I'd been wanting to do a Honda/Ryou skin for a long time, but I had trouble finding an image...then, once I found it, I wasn't sure what to do with it. =P  So this skin was a while in the making.

I've hidden the open, shuffle and repeat buttons, because the skin looks better without them.  ^^;;

I used the solid background with borders look, which I borrowed from my Jou/Mai skin.  Since I suck at making backgrounds, this is an easy way to deal with an image that doesn't come with a background. ^^;;

The name is from a Monica song.  The text on the equalizer is a line from the lyrics.  I picked that line as a nod to the name of the pairing; Protectshipping.  Lyrics are included below.

Like all of my skins, this one's pretty simplistic, but then, that's what I like.  Plus, this is only the forty-ninth skin that I've made.  I'm pretty happy with it, though. ^_^

now i can work on adding things to the single coruscant map that i've managed to get hold of through the 2016 version of star wars: galactic maps because no, i couldn't just write self-indulgent star wars fic, i have to have things like a timeline, a catalogue of ships, a spreadsheet to track the order 66 temple siege, deciding which tangle of lineages to use (i'm very tempted to do connections with the high republic like maybe linking azlin rell or ady sun'zee through to lene kostana), and figuring out where the fuck everything in coruscant is in relation to the jedi temple, the senate, and whatever the fuck else exists in this ecumenopolis.
