Look I’m not trying to be shady but you can’t convince me that Steven wasn’t the biggest driving force behind this lol. The podcasts make him sound like such a finance bro + he grew up wealthy. I remember his response to someone struggling financially was to “get another job and save money”. Even his Instagram post about this is wildly out of touch. “For those who won’t be joining us in the next chapter”. My guy I’m sure plenty of people would love to but you’ve made it inaccessible now.

I think a lot of movie-turned-stage-musicals are mid but some are really good. I think my only problem with them as a whole is that there’s a lot of value to shows that would be difficult or impossible to adapt into a film, and they are inherently precluded from that category

#I do wish theater was more accessible though. have many other plays done the Disney + Hamilton thing? #also I wonder if there are adaptations that make big changes that would be impossible to mean-girls back into a movie #like teeth #though i didn’t really like what they did with teeth the musical

actually i’m gonna speak on the “versions” of newsies for a min

the only two “versions”. are broadway and 92sies. we do like actually know that right. because those are two different plot lines with different events and entirely different songs.

west end? not a version. it’s a production. it’s new staging and orchestrations which is different for us, and certainly fresh character interpretation, but at the end of the day that’s what it is— interpretation.

so the “livesies and west end are diff versions” (which already doesn’t make sense because then wouldn’t bway and tour be slightly different as well with that argument) is kind of. just. a weird separation in the name of—speaking as a writer here—maybe “keeping the work we already have”. like oh i wrote racer this way but now he’s this way.

guess what! doesn’t matter. it’s a character. there’s no- like no version besides bway script and 92sies script. what you draw character from are the actual words spoken- and yeah, staging will influence you bc if it doesn’t that’s weird, but it’s not a different character. are we. do you get me.

mainly my worry is othering, and personally this fandom cannot afford to do that w/ michael’s jack kelly, because then i’ll become violent and no one wants that :/ a new person playing jack doesn’t make it an other, different jack it just makes it yet another millionth interpretation of jack. yk. like do we get what i’m saying here

Especially bc "a lot of the stuff I do is geared around theater that is accessible" YES! Theater and accessibility is such an important topic, and it's not only monetary accessibility that needs to be talked about(even though that is super important, and absolutely should be talked about)

"Why is this art form increasingly only available to wealthy people?" PLEASE theater people talk about this more!

I just did a presentation on how theater benefits people in multiple ways, and the studies that I used were absolutely incredible. Theater is an art form that has insane emotional and mental benefits to both the artists and the audience. It DESERVES to be accessible to everyone.

I'd like to think in the hypothetical post-scarcity/capitalism utopia there would still be people who want to make movies and there would thus also still be people like me, who want to open theaters where you can go and watch them.

#sometimes I think in our desperation to imagine a better future #a lot of us forget that like #you CAN make movies and video games ethically #and people will still WANT TO DO THAT #and I don't think being like 'you're just gonna have to get used to not having movies and video games' is helpful #bcs yeah we probably wouldn't be able to have a marvel movie every 6 months or dozens of AAA games #but people still love telling stories #indie films and games exist and are often BETTER than huge budget ones #and they can be made in ways that don't harm the environment or the people making them #and so yea we will still have fun things in the future #it's not gonna be all books and nothing else #and idk I think there's something very special about going to a movie theater #and tbh if I had no profit motive at all #if I was super rich #I would love to run a theater that's accessible and ethical and environmentally friendly #and I know a lot of other people would love that too

even if you don’t play DnD definitely go see honor among thieves; it’s super fun and well-done and accessible to people who’ve never played. if you want a slightly enhanced experience, do what I did an go with folks who do play, and ask them some of their favorite settings, character types, creatures, or tropes on the way over so you can be delighted when you recognize something.

#I was so thrilled to know about the underdark #and owlbears and mimics #really enhanced my delight #dndhat #dadhat #idk how long it’s been since I went to the movies #years probably #but it was so much fun #i was really impressed by how enjoyable the movie was for me #not knowing any of the tropes or lore or such #very accessible. they talk in interviews about using structures viewers will be familiar with to ease them into the setting #and they do a good job of not getting bogged down in terminology and just showing what things are/do #at the same time there are tons of settings and creatures and items that the friends I went with could recognize and enjoy #most weren’t plot related but they obviously added to the atmosphere #fight scenes were great #dialogue was funny #and there were a few times where you could even intuit mechanics despite it not being part of the movie #j next to me in the theater: persuasion check #or the dm making a complicated puzzle or obstacle course only for the party to immediately break it or go around #rip thank you for your service

oh i forgot to say lol i went to the meeting thingie. and she was really sweet. and i was worried she'd be weird abt me being trans (bc the meeting took place in a religious area) but she was super chill. and we got everything done in one meeting instead of two so now i just gotta send her a few other things + give my psychiatrist other files to fill and then she'll pass everything along to the government. and she said there's no way they won't approve my request. so ig we'll see!!
