Leia & Vader: Rule of Law, beliefs and family

Another aspect I liked of Leia and Vader first scene in A New Hope is the different way in which Leia tries to appeal her case with Vader in constast to Tarkin. Lest remember Leia was trained as a diplomatic since a young age as a future Senator and member of the Organa monarchy so the way she wields her words there tells much about what she knows of the person she´s talking with.

With Vader Leia uses the "I am a member of the imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan" card when Vader mentions this wasn´t about a "mercy mission" and she was a rebel and a traitor.

This tell me two things:

1.- Leia believes Vader will respect the authority of the Senate on this matter.

Vader may be the Emperor right hand man but he´s someone Leia knows who at least tries to follow the rules and Vader response talks about previous experiences of this happening.

2.- "You werent´on any mercy mission THIS TIME" Leia and Vader meet before, possibly during one of Leia´s mercy missions and on the Senate.

Vader is impliying here if Leia was truly on a mercy mission from Alderaan then he would have not problem with it, he says she should stop trying to play games with him and to tell him where are the plans the rebels sent her.

What´s interesting for me here is that Leia is appealing to Vader´s sense of law and order because this has worked before, she has used many mercy missions to help the rebel alliance making it look like she was sending help to planets in trouble which Vader seems to not have a problem with.

Vader says to Luke on ESB about becoming leaders of the Empire to "put order in the galaxy" so Leia going on mercy missions to help the population in other planets falls neatly into Vader´s idea of order.

Leia also believes she can lie to him, which is understable, he´s someone Leia believes can be talked down to given how the Emperor treats Vader, he shares "Vader´s leash" with Tarkin and maybe other officials, so Vader may have some personal authority but she knows he´s completely subjected to the Emperor´s will and Tarkin´s, she doesn´t know why but know´s is the truth.

This is in complete contrast with Tarkin who Leia automatically starts insulting and says she´s surprised he´s going to take the responsibility for executing her, Tarkin is the Emperor proxy there narratively speaking.

Leia doesn´t try to appeal to Tarkin using the Senate, the diplomatic laws or the fact she´s on a mercy mission because she knows he doesn´t care for any of that but he may care for taking responsibility for killing her because she´s a member of a Monarchy from one of the Core worlds of the Galaxy and a Senator. She´s trying to use her power in relation to his own because Tarkin main motivation and what he responds to is power.

All this tells me Vader and Leia meet on the Senate and kind of had a rivalry for their respective political agendas but despite this fact, Leia still expected Vader to follow the Law when the Emperor and Tarkin would not if they didn´t choose to.

It´s a shame this period, the meetings between Leia and Vader before the Death Star is completely ignored and once Vader shows Leia his other face, the face of the executioner, he losses all credibility she may have given him previously and while she´s a aware Tarkin gave the order to destroy Alderaan she blames Vader by proxy because he was the only one left alive of the first Death Star and I believe their previous meetings makes this more personal for her and I think this plays perfectly later in ROTJ when Luke told Leia about Vader being their father.

Leia believes Luke, Leia wants to keep Luke´s safe but more importantly, Leia doesn´t think Luke is crazy for believing he can bring Vader back from the "darkside", she doesn´t think his self appointed mission lacks merit despite her having all the reason in the world to tell Luke he´s wrong for ever believing Vader could be other thing than evil or stop being the Emperor´s slave and I think the reason why she understands Luke´s mission is because she herself has seen this little light, this aspect of Vader many other people ignore but she cares way more about Luke´s safety so she tells him to run and hide while wishing she could go with him because they are family.

Leia´s actions here also oppose her rebel leader persona, as leader of the rebellion Leia could have the right to detain Luke because he plainly told her, "I want to make sure Darth Vader isn´t on the second Death Star when the alliance blows it up because he´s my father and I want to save him" Leia stays on her mission because she´s loyal to the alliance but truts Luke to do his self appointed mission and scape safe because he´s her brother and she loves him, even if it means the rescue of the second in command from the Empire. This is an amazing show of trust and loyalty from Leia to Luke, her trust that he may have a point in trying to save Vader.

I know Leia being Luke´s sister and Vader´s daughter wasn´t planned in a New Hope but this still connected neatly with the first movie because those subtlies were still there.

[DATING TARKIN - HEADCANON]

🌔It is not very easy to approach Tarkin. If you did, and there was interest in it, then you are part of the political elite. You are undoubtedly the daughter of a great politician or a renowned officer. You are something quite exceptional, combining cold beauty with great intelligence.

🌔He hates futility. You are not. There are probably other women before you who have tried to circle around him, but he saw nothing but pure interest and frivolity. The fact that you behaved with him the same way you would with anyone when you first met worked in your favor.

🌔Tarkin is a glacier. He will not show any gesture of affection towards you but will welcome yours without complaining. A simple caress on his cheek or the fact that you climb into his lap when he sits at his desk thinking could be enough to melt the ice.

🌔“I love you” is not part of his vocabulary. Not even a single tender nickname will come out of his mouth. Tarkin will show his affection by accepting your presence in times when he is isolated or by letting you take part in family rituals on Eriadu.

🌔Unmaterialistic, he does not see the point of offering you anything. However, if he does it – and it will always be for a useful reason – he will never offer it to you directly. He will arrange for the gift to be left in your room or delivered by a soldier. This prevents him from your outpourings of joy which he often finds disproportionate.

🌔He rarely accompanies you in public. Your meetings are often clandestine. In the shade of a candle in his private apartments where he has the best meals brought to him. Tarkin preserves his privacy and is aware that your relationship can have an impact on himself and the way he reacts. He considers you his main weakness.

🌔And that’s probably the best compliment we can give you.

🌔Tarkin can be jealous and possessive towards you. He might have a hard time seeing that other officers are lusting after you. Perhaps this idea will even end up convincing him that he must marry you, even if it means taking the risk of revealing his weak point to the entire galaxy.

🌔In principle, he is always right. You prefer to laugh about it because nothing can change his mind. You understood that each decision had to come from him to be accepted and you learned to use your charms to achieve your ends.

🌔It is difficult for him to comfort you when you are in distress. Tarkin excludes all forms of weakness, including when they come from you. He might sometimes be aggressive because he doesn't know how to deal with your pain. But quickly, he will make up for it by offering you a moment of relaxation somewhere or simply by staying by your side to encourage you to bravely face these trials.

🌔Don't expect him to apologize to you during an argument. He will do it in a deflected way by being softer with you. Maybe even in this kind of situation he could do something for you that would be akin to romance. But do not exaggerate, it will be nothing mushy.

🌔Contrary to what one might believe. Tarkin is extremely loyal to you. Loyalty is something that is close to his heart and in this area you are tied with the Emperor. He will never give in to the seductive parades of other women as long as he shares your life. Even if your relationship is secret.

🌔Although he lets you suppose otherwise, he takes into account what you say to him and criticizes him. You've caught him several times trying to work on some of his unpleasant attitudes just to please you. You don't have to try to thank him, for fear that he will get offended and turn away. But you found it adorable.

🌔He's a busy man. The little free time he has, he tries to spend with you. You are not safe from a furtive visit to your office or apartments. In these rushed moments, Tarkin can be very demonstrative, kissing you without even exchanging a word with you. The force of your frolics at these moments reveals that he is very upset.

🌔You often hear about Orson Krennic being blamed for almost all of his troubles. Moreover, you develop a deep hatred towards him and a touch of jealousy tickles you every time Tarkin mentions him. You have the impression that he obsesses him more than you and that is a valid reason to wish him dead.

“Lady,” he said. “Please adjust the biometric controls in here so I can breathe.”

She complied immediately and he sat on the single chair in this room, removing the helmet and then unclipping the mask, to peel it off and set it aside.

“This is what I am now, Artoo,” he said, his voice sounding weak and feeble to his ears. Well. What was left of his ears. “What Obi-Wan did. No doubt you think I deserve it.”

The blue droid swivelled his camera slowly over him.

[By my assessment,] Artoo told him flatly [you should have died. Why didn’t you?]

Ever gentle and considerate, this droid.

“That…is a good question,” he answered, willing to think about it more in depth for the first time in years. “The Emperor got to me in time. Got me medical aid.”

Artoo gave a blat.

[That bag of poodu can’t raise anyone from the dead . Even if he got you medical care right away, you should not have survived.]

For the first time, Vader could detect a little doubt in the droid’s tone.

“What are you saying, Artoo?” he asked.

[I do not have a conclusion,] his old friend said. [I am merely pointing out facts based on what I can see. Your ship can verify.]

Random Thoughts during the last two episodes of “The Wrong Jedi” Arc from “The Clone Wars”:

•Part three- Random thoughts during The Clone Wars S5:E19 “To Catch a Jedi”:

*Plo Koon knows that his baby daughter Ahsoka isn’t guilty.

*I get why Yoda chose Plo Koon and Anakin to go down to the lower depths to find Ahsoka; they would be the most likely candidates to talk her down from the ledge, but it still feels kind of underhanded.

*Ahsoka’s wanted poster is fierce AF. Just sayin’. Fierce AF.

*Notice that the first person Ahsoka thinks to call after the smoke clears is Barriss. Barriss seems legitimately concerned about Ahsoka’s safety. Don’t use the Jedi-com, Ahsoka. They’re watching.

*Oh Ahsoka, that cloak is not a great disguise. Your montails are literally sticking out of it. It’s adorable, but honestly… you’re not going to fool anybody.

*Ahsoka is a master of parkour.

*To hell with the bootlicking jerk on the train… Ahsoka is running from the cops because she’s being accused of a crime that she did not commit, and this dude is butting his nose in affairs that don’t concern him. Stay TF out of it.

*One should feel bad for Ahsoka at this point. She’s not thinking clearly at all. She’s cutting a hole in the roof of that elevator, and that Twi-lek kid is like, “um, use the button to stop it, dumbass.”

*Here come Ahsoka’s brothers again!

*Did Ahsoka get Ventress that pardon? That was a bold promise. I don’t think Ventress really cared. She felt bad for Ahsoka. It’s that gray coming through.

*Those looks that Ahsoka and Barriss give each other on that holo call. My god… the angst… It’s like they’re going to reach through the video somehow and kiss each other. I mean, look… look and give me one heterosexual explanation. I’ll wait:

It’s so gay, it’s ridiculous. Side note: Barriss has really f*^%ed up here. She’s still trying to save Ahsoka’s ass, but she sucks so badly at improvising that she has only succeeded in making everything monumentally worse for her.

*The hand-to-hand combat between Ahsoka and Ventress versus the Clones is so badass. Ventress goes straight feral. That move she does after Wolfe grabs her from behind…holy shit! She just growls, kicks the shit out of two clones and head butts Wolfe. Epic. “See? Didn’t kill a one. It’s the new me.”

*Barriss knocking Ventress out with the pipe to the head was savage. I still can’t tell if she’s trying to frame Ventress up as the mastermind behind the bombing, or if she thinks Ahsoka and Ventress are boning and she has decided to kick both their asses for it.

*Ahsoka has fought Ventress before. I think it’s odd that she doesn’t realize it’s not Ventress here even if Barriss is trying to mimic Ventress’s fighting style. Ventress does not stop talking shit when she duels someone. Barriss is silent.

*This is honestly a brutal ass-beating. It’s Barriss’s kicking Ahsoka into the wall over and over again for me. Ahsoka is clearly tired or something and is not fighting her best fight. Give her a break!

*Uh. It’s painful… Ahsoka just doesn’t know when to stop. She keeps getting up. Sometimes, I wish she would just stay down for a minute to recuperate.

*Aaaannnddd, Ahsoka falls right into the nano-droids. Barriss runs off as the Clones come to collect Ahsoka. *Face-palm* So either…

A.) Barriss loses her nerve, is afraid that she’s going to get caught and runs off leaving her girlfriend in an even worse predicament… because she is the worst improviser ever. Or…

B.) She’s convinced that Ahsoka is cheating with Ventress and has left her to rot. Either way, damn.

*Wolfe isn’t going to let you explain. Ahsoka is screwed.

•Part four- Random thoughts during The Clone Wars S5:E20 “The Wrong Jedi”:

*Padawan Tano is not going to get a fair trial. You heard it here first.

*Tarkin is truly awful. He has honestly had a problem with Ahsoka since The Citadel arc, and I know he’s loving all of this. F*^%ing fascist asshole.

*God, the Jedi council pisses me off here… I suppose it shouldn’t though. On the one hand, they are kowtowing to the senate. But, on the other, I mean, their hands really are tied. If it had just been the video recording of Ahsoka supposedly choking Letta, they may have been able to swing something, but between Barriss’s questionable improvising, and Ahsoka’s running, Ahsoka does look guilty AF.

*I tend to think Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Plo voted in Ahsoka’s favor.

*Ahsoka’s eyes are so sad. You can feel her stomachs drop. I don’t know why the temple guards had to be so rough yanking her padawan silka beads off either. Someone just please give her a hug and tell her that everything is going to be okay, even if you don’t believe it.

*Anakin having another Vader moment with Ventress.

*Anakin: How dare you compare yourself to Ahsoka!

Ventress: It’s true! My master abandoned me, and that’s exactly what you did to her… you and your precious Jedi Order.

Anakin: *Looking around like there are no lies detected in Ventress’s statement. Feeling that slippery slope.*

*Tarkin is aiming for the death penalty in this trial, and Ahsoka is only 17! He’s trying to put a kid to death for sedition. What a dick!

*You can tell Anakin is pissed when he gets to Barriss’s door. I’m surprised that he doesn’t kick it in, and force choke a confession out of her. He probably warned her before she and Ahsoka started dating. “Hurt her and I’ll end you.” Well, here we are.

*You are in trouble, Barriss.

*I love how Barriss is still trying to cast the blame back on Ventress. Like, no, baby, the gig is up.

*Anakin: *growling* Ahsoka trusted you and you betrayed her!

Barriss: I’ve learned that trust is overrated. The only thing the Jedi council believes in is violence.

That line… was it the cheating thing!? I’m so confused by that line. One thing that I do know about Jedi is that if they did decide to get into a forbidden relationship, they’d definitely be too autistic to cheat. Ahsoka is no exception.

*Barriss doesn’t fight with the same brutality against Anakin as she did with Ahsoka. It was almost as if she was toying with Ahsoka, and now she’s trying to save her own ass against Anakin.

*”Cease hostilities.” Oh Barriss, no.

*The end of the fight between Anakin and Barriss is my favorite part. It’s like Anakin grows tired of her bullshit, and starts raging. Like, the ONLY reason that he did not end her right there is because he needed her to go and confess to the crimes in front of the senate. You were warned, Barriss. You know you got that shovel talk.

*Anakin walks in right before that guilty verdict was handed down, and Ahsoka’s like, “Thank the force…”

*But…. It’s immediately doused with the realization that it’s…. “Barriss!? Oh shit!!”

*Someone help scrape Ahsoka’s jaw off the floor.

*Obi-Wan gives Barriss a death stare. He’s up in the peanut gallery thinking, “you stupid f*^%ing bitch.” Oh Barriss, you’ve officially lost the in-laws.

*You can tell Barriss is sorry immediately. The look she shoots Ahsoka *grits teeth*. Ahsoka is going to grow up to be the hottest lesbian in the Galaxy, and Barriss just fumbled their whole relationship. Ouch.

*Ugh, and you can tell Barriss just broke Ahsoka’s heart... I mean, look at her… she can’t even find joy in her exoneration:

This is the face of someone whose heart was just shattered into a million pieces.

*Ahsoka isn’t buying the Jedi council’s bullshit. I’m not confident that they’re knighting her here, but they did say that this was her great trial. Ahsoka doesn’t care. Ahsoka’s emotions are on 15.

*The moment Ahsoka “nopes” the return to the Jedi order still punches me in the gut. I’ve watch this arc half a dozen times, and it still hits. Jeeze. “I’m sorry master, but I’m not coming back.”

*Obi-Wan feels compelled to chase Anakin and Ahsoka down, but is stopped by Plo Koon. Oh, the emotion that Obi-Wan, Anakin AND Ahsoka would have had… knowing the three of them have zero control over their emotions combined would have been something else entirely.

*The look on Yoda’s face is brilliant, too. Yeah. He knows he has f*^%ed up royally. This is all going to end badly.

*I tend to think Ahsoka’s completely unchecked feelings are why she couldn’t remain at the temple as a Jedi. She had enough clairvoyance to know that she couldn’t stay because her emotions were completely off the charts. Not only did the Jedi council not trust her, her girlfriend betrayed her, and she’s feeling all kinds of negative feels in that moment. “I can’t stay here any longer….not now.”

*Also, Ahsoka knew about Anakin and Padme. It is confirmed here with this…

Anakin: I understand. More than you realize. I understand wanting to walk away from the order.

Ahsoka: … I know.

*Oh, Ahsoka’s tears as she walks down the temple steps towards the sunset with that music playing… Damn. Damn. Damn. 😭

*Then, you hear Ahsoka’s theme and that’s it… you don’t see her again until Season 7… where she’s smuggling drugs with her rebound girlfriend and Barriss is still living rent-free in her head. It’s art! Dammit! Art!!!
