I’m taking a semester off… This past school year was rather difficult as I was managing a strange group of ongoing symptoms which caused me to feel burned out, fatigued, and generally awful all the time. Unfortunately the cause is an extremely rare cancer called LCH, a form of Histiocytosis that occurs when cells that live normally in our skin divide uncontrolled and invade other organs forming lesions and causing damage. As a result my case requires treatment due to its multisystem involvement (there is no staging for LCH) that can be intense. Due to its rarity there are few centers that specialize in the condition, and I would not be able to get adequate care at school. On top of all of this, my financial aid changed and not for the better, even if I were healthy I would have likely stayed home this semester anyways due to inability to pay tuition that’s increased because of inflation. One positive of staying home is I’ll at least be able to get treatment in a timeframe that will allow me to return to school in the spring, and catch up on my to be read list.
