I’m taking a semester off… This past school year was rather difficult as I was managing a strange group of ongoing symptoms which caused me to feel burned out, fatigued, and generally awful all the time. Unfortunately the cause is an extremely rare cancer called LCH, a form of Histiocytosis that occurs when cells that live normally in our skin divide uncontrolled and invade other organs forming lesions and causing damage. As a result my case requires treatment due to its multisystem involvement (there is no staging for LCH) that can be intense. Due to its rarity there are few centers that specialize in the condition, and I would not be able to get adequate care at school. On top of all of this, my financial aid changed and not for the better, even if I were healthy I would have likely stayed home this semester anyways due to inability to pay tuition that’s increased because of inflation. One positive of staying home is I’ll at least be able to get treatment in a timeframe that will allow me to return to school in the spring, and catch up on my to be read list. Temporarily things may switch more toward bookish posting, we shall see. #studygram #studytips #studymotivation #studyblog #studynotes #studywithme #studyblr #studytime #studyhard #studystudystudy #studyaccount #studyspo #fuckcancer #histiocytosis #langerhanscellhistiocytosis #langerhanscellhistiocytosisawareness #histiocytosisawareness #lch #ayacancer #adolescentyoungadultcancer #thecancerpatient #ayacancerawareness #cancerawareness #raredisease #rarediseaseday #danafarber #studycommunity #chronicillness #chronicfatigue #chronicillnessmemes (at Boston, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChprtfnOEPg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#coloncancer #coloncancerwarrior #Repost @thecancerpatient with @get_repost ・・・ I’m thankful for each and everyone of you that made the decision to fight after you heard the words, “you have cancer.” I know at the time it didn’t seem like we had a choice and some of us have even heard it multiple times but it was still a decision to be made and you decided to fight and live. So for National Cancer Survivors Day, look at the mirror, pat yourself in the back and say “you are a bad ass motherfucker” — just because you fucking are. all you really need to do is take one look at an “explanation of benefits” from the health insurance company for one cycle of chemo and tell me if you’re still surprised why most AYA cancer patients are broke
*BONUS: add being Black (tap into #medicalapartheid), gay (the american psychiatric association removed being gay from being a mental disorder/sickness in 1973 aka yesterday tf.. so still rampant and ingrained) and already poor (yaw already know how poor folks and poor Black folks are mis/treated)! some of us have been living a “quarantine”/pandemic life except we have actually been + are devastatingly ill and there was nothing to prevent it like a vaccine. we will also continue to face other health challenges because of cancer and it’s world too. def ain’t get no stimmy checks. the same meds/barbaric ass “treatments” more like mistreatments that have killed our fellow cojourners didn’t/don’t give us EXTRA strength.  those same drugs and stigma/s are still harming and killing many of us. In some way or another. and being optimistic and hopeful and all that toxic positivity gets in the way. listen to us. like, really listen. deeply listen. no advice or fixing. be a friend. if you don’t know what a friend is look it up and ask someone what it means to be a friend to/for THEM! word to the wise .. don’t say to us, “i don’t want you to feel that way”... we don’t either. it ain’t about you. listen. listen. iLISTEN! 5 weeks post-surgery, this post from @thecancerpatient is me minus the boobs 🙋🏼‍♀️! Our goal to reach full range of motion before radiation begins has been achieved. Recovery is a process with many lows and highs. My days are filled with health-supporting appointments, stretches, and doing 15 minute intervals of activities. It is frustrating and humbling not being able to do most things with limited arm capacity on both sides. My bag lady ways are being put to the test! 🥴 I went from being super active prior to surgery to passive and not able to exercise for two months after. As a result neuropathy in my toes is worse, and sleep has been a challenge. I'm able to sleep on one side now, am healing well and tightness/pain are improving.
I have some new swelling in my chest under my incisions this week so am back to wearing the tight binder from my surgeon... I can now be grateful for not coming up in corsets of the Elizabethan era!⁣
After only being able to do 30 minute "saunter" walks, I can slowly increase my activity per my physical therapist and was very happy to take this longer hike today, which will improve my sleep and mental state. I've taken for granted all those wonderful benefits of regular exercise, wow, and won't ever again! It RAINED last night, which brought beautiful fresh air and blue skies, something else I no longer take for granted with fires raging.⁣
I start the final leg of my treatment marathon year on Monday of daily radiation for the next six weeks. I have another rock star female doctor to complete my team, who told me today that everything has gone as well as we could have hoped for. She is very thorough and data-driven in formulating the treatment plan recommendation based on my specific cancer presentation, and I was able to choose what feels like the best course out of several options. We have been testing out bandage tolerance on my arm in hopes of offering a bit more protection for my skin during treatment. Onward! 💪🏼⁣

Chemo #16! I was so happy to be at this last round of treatment! I was even early for the first time 😄 I won’t miss the middle of the night extreme dry mouth, endless crusty nose bleeds, sticky neuropathy toes, and hot flashes to name a few. I still have some of those, over a month out. I will miss the nurses, the front desk team, my medical assistant Gloria pictured here, the comfort and routine of being cared for weekly, with warm blankets, IV fluids and questions. A massive thank you to my friend Melissa who has orchestrated a food train for me by my wonderful tennis community and kept me going. Jen @jnewens surprised me with this beautiful and delicious gluten free, vegan cake (and later, ice cream!). The past month after chemo has been a challenging and overwhelming time of deciding what surgery is best. I didn’t have easy choices. Today I have surgery, first of the day at 8:00am Pacific time. Double mastectomy, no reconstruction. I have to have radiation on my right side so that limits options. I know I will have lots to process and it that it will be a process. I am choosing what feels the most right to me with the cards I’ve been dealt, with the least amount of complications and risk, so that I can get on with living my rich, vibrant life for a long time to come. I’m sure there will be more to share. Thanks for all the love and support each of you are showing me- it makes a tremendous difference in fighting this cancer. I am so grateful you are here! Repost from @thecancerpatient ... yes this was me at 9:57pm last night 🙊

Dr. Christina Iglesia | Mental Health Patient Leader
2019 Best in Show: Instagram Finalist
On October 10th, 2018 (World Mental Health Day), Dr. Christina Iglesia launched the #therapyiscool mental health action campaign. Dr. Iglesia launched this initiative after several patients disclosed how they don’t disclose the fact that they participate in therapy, even to the closest people in their lives. Statements shared, like “My parents don’t believe in therapy” or “People would think I am crazy or something” continued to make their way into the therapy room. The theme of these conversations kept coming back to stigma, this implicit agreement that mental health issues are not to be talked about. It became clear to Dr. Iglesia that people will continue to suffer in silence until we make it socially acceptable to partake in mental health treatment, such as therapy. It is with this in mind that Dr. Iglesia created the #therapyiscool mental health action campaign, with the intent to encourage authentic and open conversations about mental health.

@cinnamillie_ | Eating Disorder Patient Leader
2019 Best in Show: Instagram Finalist
After being diagnosed with the most deadly psychiatric condition (Anorexia Nervosa) at the age of 15, Millie went against all odds to become the inspiring young woman she is today. Born and raised in a little South Yorkshire town in England, Millie personifies the “she may be but little, but she is fierce” quote by Shakespeare. Since creating her Instagram account to go in-depth about her mental health struggles, Millie has amassed over 11.5K followers, as well as finding love through her account too. Millie explains the ins-and-outs of having anorexia, whilst also going into the nitty-gritty areas which are too “taboo” in society, such as the physical effects of eating disorders, the hardships that arise from weight restoration and the suicidal ideation; but, Millie manages to twist this into a positive, encouraging her followers to fight against the cruelty of eating disorders, revealing what her life is like with the illness (mostly) not in her life anymore.

Natalie Kelley – @plentyandwellwithnat | Ulcerative Colitis Patient Leader
“There were moments in that hospital bed I thought I would never be where I am at today – running my own business, helping other women with IBD and connecting with the most AMAZING IBD community on Instagram. But most importantly, I’ve learned that an autoimmune disease doesn’t make it harder to reach my dreams, it adds TO my dreams because without ulcerative colitis I wouldn’t have found my passions, I wouldn’t be a holistic health coach, I wouldn’t have the amazing community that I now have and I wouldn’t be able to change other IBD patients’ lives, and that is truly priceless.”

Megan King @thetravelinghaloofhope | Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Patient Leader
“Becoming an advocate for EDS happened by chance. My journey began in Sept. 05′ at 16. I can’t believe 1 decision changed the trajectory of my life forever. I’ve endured 35 surgeries due to EDS with the next 1 scheduled for Sept. 19′. Due to limited resources I wrote about my journey in the hopes to connect with others. I want to be a small part of the solution for EDS treatments. It’s classified as rare but it really isn’t. No two cases of EDS are the same. This can make diagnosis difficult because there’s no “face” to EDS. We are all unique individuals with our own unique presentation of symptoms. As I wrote, to my surprise, people responded to what I was sharing.”

Rachel Straining – @thenoglutengirl | Crohn’s Disease Patient Leader
“When I was first diagnosed, even though I knew it wasn’t true, I just felt like the only person in the world who had this disease. I didn’t realize that there were other people out there who were fighting battles so similar to one that was waging war within my own life. ⁣One day, I made the random decision to make an Instagram account to find some gluten-free food inspiration. That day, I also found myself searching the hashtag “Crohn’s Disease.” That day, I realized that, all along, I had never really been alone.”
