i was thinking about the borg queen today.
it's undeniable that the concept of a true inhuman techo-biological hivemind was watered down when the writers created the queen. suddenly they weren't an unfathomable entity; thousands of mine accomplishing the incomprehensible (to us) task of melding as one. suddenly they just became cyborg bees or ants or a cartoon of what authoritarian governments do. there's a queen and she gives orders. sometimes she cuts off your head to inspect for a corruption to 'perfection'. sometimes she weeps for the loss of 'her children'. this shift let whatever writer handled her turn her into whatever kind of villain they needed for the show or movie.
and yet i couldn't stop myself from thinking. a single brain holds multitudes. part of what makes the borg horrible is that the diversity of life and cultures is flattened into a mold of 'perfection'. also, by assimilating individuals they are killing the diversity that one mind can express separate to others.
and yet they are also a multi-species conglomerate that relies on the breadth of species they have assimilated to make themselves stronger? also, if the borg are truly one mind, one psychology at play, would the complexity of their collective not call for the expansion of their hivemind into different archetypes within itself? the borg are not just conquerors: they are scientists, they are explorers, they are parents and they are children. no matter how much the collective centers unity, singularity in their members, diversity is impossible to eradicate from the borg. this is true no matter how much they try. there is no thing as a true hivemind.
which brings me back to the queen. she is what allows the paradox of the borg to work. sometimes she's a despot, sometimes she's a grieving mother, sometimes she's a seductress, and sometimes she is a revolutionary. she is the impossibility of true unity put in a specific box so that the rest of the collective can embody one-ness to the best of its abilities. she is the voice that tells you to get up in the morning when most of you is screaming for five more minutes. she is the one who tells you the truth to your face when you don't want it to be true. she is a thought exercise for the collective. she doesn't exist except as attempt to juggle the enormity of the hivemind without letting it settle in stone and never move again in the contentment of its one-ness.
i wonder if the borg queen's original self had anything to do at all with what she became.

Doing a PhD at the Daystrom Institute, like
You wanted Dr. Maddox to be your advisor, but he disappeared, so you get Dr. Jurati
You find out a few years later that Dr. Jurati murdered Dr. Maddox, but she wasn't criminally responsible, so it's okay. You're okay. It's too late to change advisors now
(She is, however, clearly having a depressive spiral and keeps turning up drunk at your advising sessions over subspace)
(Whatever, just keep your head down; focus on how future hiring committees will react to seeing the words "DAYSTROM INSTITUTE" on your CV)
Except now you need to rewrite your whole "Research Ethics" section because it turns out that there's an intergalactic civilization of godlike machines who will annihilate all organic life in the Milky Way at the drop of a hat if they think that we're mistreating our AIs
It takes two years, and you need to go to Coppelius to do it, but you finally get the rewrites done; you just need Dr. Jurati to sign off on your final draft so you can do your defence; it's going to be alright. "DAYSTROM INSTITUTE", right?
Except it turns out that she's a Borg Queen now (and, due to a time travel accident, apparently has been for the last 400 years? No one can explain it to you in a way that makes sense)
Fuck it. Contact her anyway.
She's very apologetic, but says that she can't sign off on your dissertation because your theory was actually disproven by an alien cyberneticist that she assimilated two hundred years ago in an uncharted region of the Gamma Quadrant
She does, however, offer you a position as "drone"
You're honestly not sure whether this sounds better or worse than staying in grad school
25th century academia is a messed-up scene

The first half of season 2 of Picard really has a lot more pace until the back half. And the whole Picard-Mother thing kicked off and majorly slowed down the pace from a sprint into a walk.
(The part where Akiva Goldsman fully took over, I suspect. Plus, the whole COVID of it all.)
On the other hand, I really enjoyed the heist-y planning but mostly because of the judge-y and confused looks Rios, Raffi, and Seven were throwing at Picard for choosing Agnes to infiltrate and hack the system first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love that there was a second where Seven, Rios, and Raffi look so skeptical. And Agnes Jurati looked shellshocked. Because the first time they did something similar in Stardust City Rag, Jurati was A Mess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alison Pill was really, really funny in season 2 -- she's the Amy Acker of Picard Season 2 since season 1 really squandered her.
Tumblr media
(Honestly, I am so sad they broke up, I really like their relationship, and while I like Teresa, I do love Rios and Jurati dynamic in season 2. The ex-banter is amazing.)
Tumblr media
I love how Seven took Picard's 'she has all the skills' personally. Because Picard only knows the gun-toting Vigilante Pirate Ranger Seven of Nine and not the Know-it-All science-engineer!Nerd!Seven.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LOL. She even gave Jurati a Look.
Tumblr media
And Agnes doesn't even know the Look Seven is giving her.
Seven's Borg arrogance and vanity were pricked, remember when she had that Know-It-All, I was Right energy All the Time?
Tumblr media
I bet sometimes she missed those days.

Something not a lot of people are talking about is how disrespectful and insulting Season 3 (and Season 2 as well, let's be honest) of Picard is to the viewers who actually liked Season 1. How this show was such a dishonest fucking bait-and-switch. The way S2 unceremoniously dumped the orginal cast, either killing them off ignominiously or straight up firing the actors.
"Well, duh. The show is titled Star Trek: Picard, not Star Trek: Sirena"
Perhaps an argument could be made, but if you were me and meticulously following any and all news of this brand new shiny show that Santiago Cabrera was going to star in back in 2019, you would have noticed that they consistently marketed it as a new, fresh chapter in Picard's life with Patrick Stewart insisting that it had to be something new and different and not a TNG 2.0. All the interviews and cons the cast appeared in repeatedly assured us that this was not a Star Trek: TNG, Electric Boogaloo, but a different show with a different tone and a different Picard and a different crew. That was the idea they marketed us. That was the story they sold us. That was what compelled me to tune in to this show.
And what did this show end up being after Season 1? A fucking Star Trek: TNG, Electric Boogaloo
Fuck the writers. Fuck the producers. Fuck everybody involved in this decision
