I believed this happened a couple of years ago? But I'd thought it was a very peculiar experience for me to share.

So, I used to be in this traumagenic server with what seems like a lot of blacklists and claims to be POC friendly. It was one of our few DID/OSDD focused discord servers that we joined when we first suspected we have DID. (We got diagnosed a year later.)

I remembered being in a ticket with one of the mods because they looked at the names of our alters through pk. They then LITERALLY did some google research on the name origins and made it something like this.

" Hi! We noticed your names may be considered cultural appropriating blablabla

Casey = Irish

Ari = Jewish

Please consider changing your names!"

And then had the nerve to even ask me what my race is, but I felt so uncomfortable?? I said Asian. They want me to specify further. I said Southeast Asian. And if my memory serves me right, they wanted me to specify more than that.

When I looked at that message where I had to change my own and my alter's names, I felt like they were JOKING?? HOW IS CASEY A CLOSED NAME??? It's.. a generic name used by pretty much everyone in the world.

They mentioned how Irish is a closed culture, and I think they mentioned Irish discrimination during the US immigration and all. I understand, but at the same time, Irish itself isn't a closed culture at all?? Not to mention, I've been using Casey as my name for quite some time now.

Ari being linked to Jewish makes no sense to me either. People sometimes use it to shorten the name 'Ariana' for short, but I also see many non-Jewish people also using that name too.

Ari is an alternative spelling of our body's name, so we don't feel weird using our irl body's name (which is Arabic) to the people online. It's not a sense of shame of the body's name but more privacy concerns, easier pronounciation, and having our own individuality.

It's worth mentioning that a lot of Muslim and Christian names are derived from Judaism, too. The Muslim and Christian names just have a different spelling to it, so I don't know what the hell they were thinking.

I felt so mad and felt this was all too ridiculous. I had to keep my cool and leave because what kinda server is this??? That claims to be POC safe?? I'm sorry if I don't sound the most open-minded, but it's just a weird experience to me, really. When I think of cultural appropriating, I would think of taking a name from, let's say, a Romani name or a Tamil name, and then use it without realizing the significance of that culture just because it looks pretty for some aesthetic. Not whatever tf this server was pulling.

As an Irish system, what the fuck?? Casey is definitely not a "closed culture Irish name," LMAO?? You're not overreacting DW anon, that's just wild.

Is it possible to make a post with a chart of characters who have nicknames. I sometimes can’t tell who Floyd and Rook are talking about especially when they’re referring to someone not in the scene.

Yes! Here are the Nicknames Floyd and Rook give everyone.

A few notes:

All of the first years and short/cute characters like Riddle, Vil, Silver and Lilia, are addressed with "chan," all other students are "kun," except for the third-year Housewardens (Leona, Vil, Idia, and Malleus) who he addresses as "senpai."

Fan translations have also used "Remora" for Ruggie and "Flapjack Octopus" for Lilia. Both are accurate alternate names for the name that EN chose.

A majority of Rook's nicknames carry over well from JP to EN, but a few are just different enough that are worth pointing out.

Ruggie's is more or less the same, but Rook calls him using the Japanese term "tanpopo" for dandelion, instead of calling him something in French which is why I've kept them separate.

Similarly, Jade and Floyd's are given kanji with no French "pronounciation." While Jade's is almost a 1:1 localization, Floyd's is a bit more difficult. His nickname in Japanese more or less means "someone who takes delight in seeing how other people react to their decisions."

Jamil's was changed from Multi (meaning he has a veritable bounty of abilities) in JP to Pyramide in EN, a very drastic change compared to the others.

Ortho was originally Monsieur Marionette, but after Chapter 6, Rook calls him Monsieur Wonder. Wonder is spoken aloud, but his kanji is "miracle." Rook sees what happened to Ortho as something miraculous and wonderful, which is all thanks to their brotherly bond.

So if team board game night rotates, who would pick which game?

Jamie, somewhat surprisingly perhaps, tend to bring out trivia games. Things often get heated on those nights because the boys argue over the correct answers a lot. Jamie himself tends to do shockingly well in some categories and insanely, horrendously bad in others; his knowledge is spotty, to say the very least. He gets a kick out of arguing his absurdly wrong answer even after he gets they're wrong, and he gets incredibly smug when they hit upon a category that he can surprise everyone by being super knowledgeable about.  

Dani is a fan of Dixit because the pictures are gorgerous, and you get to make up tiny little stories, like poetry! He very rarely wins, however, because his associations just run very differently than the others. Dani doesn’t care, though; it’s the joy of playing that matters.

Sam alternates between table top roleplaying games (preferably in a fantasy setting because he loves magic!) and word games (which he is fucking brilliant at but which he knows that Jamie doesn’t really like, so he mostly saves them for evenings when our No. 9 can’t join them).

Colin likes a bit of everything but makes a point of bringing Welsh made games because Welsh pride they include Welsh names that no one else knows how to pronounce, that’s just an extra bonus. In fairness to the boys, they all do their very best with the pronounciation and does not mind Colin shaking his head at their efforts. Well, he only shakes his head at the English players, and then him and Jan Maas bond over how hard some people appearantly find it so very hard to make simple sounds.

Isaac arranges poker nights. He’s got a room for it at his house and all, and always dresses for the occasion. Once in a while, when they’ve really got time, he brings out Risk and all hell breaks loose. (Isaac is the Worst when it comes to snacks, though, so Richard has taken it upon himself to make sure there’s drinks and appropriate niblets. That way, Richard also get to claim co-host rights and gets out of having the team over to his place, which he just thinks is too fancy for this lot. Also, Richard doesn’t really care for board games.)

Bumbercatch is into cooperative board games, especially if the goal is to work together to solve some sort of real world issue, like Pandemic. Uniting rather than tearing each other down is the way to go if they ever want to overthrow the unjust world order!

Jan Maas also enjoys cooperative board games, except he tends to opt for the ones that include traitors (like Unfathomable), because it’s just fun to watch the rest of the team succumb to paranoia and chaos. Mafia is good too! Jan Maas tends to do well in those games because he takes full advantage of the fact that everyone expects him to be very blunt, making it easy for him to get away with lies.

Zorro is a Card Against Humanity guy. Those nights are rowdy and loud affairs, and the coaches (Roy in particular) don’t like it all that much, because it invariably lead to the team shouting weird fucking phrases and sniggering about it the day after.

The coaches aren’t invited to these things, but if they were Nate would have the team play the most elaborate strategy games and he would crush. them. ever. single. time.

You said about the pronounciation of Aeran's name that it's "AIR-ren. Similar vein to Aaron, Arin or Erin." - but I pronounce each of these names differently and I'm not necessarily sure of how they are pronounced in English.

I understand the "Aer" since you said it's like "air", but what about the "ran" - when you say "ren", is it "r-eh-n" or is it "r-ee-n"?

I've already been pronouncing the first half wrong haha... I've always read it "ah-eh-r-ah-n".

I don't think it's really all that useful to get hung up on sounding things out via text, even if it's a convenient shorthand. Regional dialects and accents will shift things too much. We can go down the path of using IPA (that's what it's there for!), but not everyone knows IPA.

Alternatively, there is this pronunciation guide I made it in 2021 with my own real voice in my very Canadian accent.

does anyone ese end up having a crackheaded call with ur bestie(tm) in which it you come to the conclussion, that witches, most likely having been evolved from humans, probably had a language (pre-Belos takeover) that had roots in some human language, and as both of you are eastern european you decide it should have roots in latin cuz thatd be either or something to figure out or make up or whatever, and then you derail to making random noises and google translating random words to latin to like change em up and say like "hey this word totalyyy naturally derived from latin, and i aint just changing up like the english pronounciation, and jesus christ what am i doing with my life".

but for a bit more context, this started with me explaining my general how bilesacs work hc, and then it derailed into how witches prepare alcohol and food preservation and stuff, and then we thought about how magic would effect alcohol and as such would create unique types of it exclusive to the demon realm, and so we needed to name it something, but to name it something we needed to figure out the basics of how witch language woulda sounded before Belos englishified everything. oh and btw Mehh (the h is hard btw) is also alternatively called veeneem. the destinction between which is used is basically this: peasants, and poor people in general where the ones to originally invent mehh, so they were the ones to name it, but then everything obviously gets marketed to the rich eventually, and well the rich aint gonna drink so peasant juice, so it was rebranded as veeneem, cuz they better be drinking them magic wine innit.

CN 2nd Anniversary Stream Translation

i’ve translated the cn subs of the whole 2nd anni stream, which can be viewed here.

this is meant to be something you can read while watching the stream… an accompaniment of sorts, but it can also be read as a stand-alone. and for the first reason, there is a severe lack of photos lol.

i received lots of help from my friends (the kanataP, the oddballsP and the ibaraP), so i’d like to thank them once again~ T^T

the voice actors in this stream are: →tsuchida reiou and yonai yuki (hosts/emcees) →hiruma shun’ya and takahashi hiroki (guests)

translator’s disclaimer:

-i’m bad with differentiating voices, so some of them are left as “???” because i don’t really know who’s talking

-for quite a few of the lines, i’ve added in some words so as to make the flow of the sentence smoother. it does not change the original meaning of the sentence, and only helps with sentence flow.

yuki: in that case, let’s ask hiroki-san what his first impression of (shu) was.

hiroki: first impression? “was it really a good idea for me to be the voice of (shu)?”

i had expected that i’d be voicing a character that’s… more eccentric (than shu) (tl/n: pun very much intended)

hiroki: because i was under the impression that there’d be characters that’re pretty outlandish… that’s why they got me to try voicing(?) the characters.

hiroki: but then, even though calling them “weird” isn’t very pleasant-sounding,

his conscientiousness…

yuki: he has a very distinctive personality

hiroki: even though shu is rather emotional, he does have this atmosphere around him which makes you want to keep a respectful distance

but (he) is a very orthodox idol

and was previously one of the top-notch idols in yumenosaki academy

and if i were to make an inference, these types of idols are extremely terrified.

that’s my first impression of shu.

hiroki: the result of my neverending hard work–

at which part did you experience/feel your character’s growth?

how has shu grown?

hiroki: in the end, it’s only after a very big setback

and from that moment, that he managed to pull himself together once more

even though his unit lost a member (lol)

when comparing it to the very first period/stage

an accumulation of various experiences and idol’s experiences (tl/n: i think he could’ve meant “going through things as a person, and as an idol” here), has allowed him to reach new levels

and (thus) widened the road to becoming an artist

how do i put it

he thinks being an idol as art-in-action

and when ‘being an idol’ is made into a classification (??)

we won’t really think too deeply about what it actually means to be an idol

it’s ‘someone who can sing’, ‘someone who can dance’, someone who ‘occassionally goes on television to perform’

but when you ask “what is it, exactly?”

we can’t help but say, “a singer”

but when it comes to itsuki shu,

(who has) a very clear definition of what it means to be an ‘idol’

so when everyone else has a murky understanding of ‘idols’

it will improve… the style/tone of this category(?)

hiroki: yes, yes. that’s how i think of it

yuki: indeed, shu has always retained the faith he had since the beginning, and took a step further and deeper

hiroki: that’s correct, he had experienced setbacks (before)

because of the things he believed in

yuki: well then, moving on… in regards to this kind of itsuki shu

it’s written here that for better or for worse

(tomoya) is really just an average type (of person)

and (i guess) people would say that/think of (him) as very ordinary (tl/n: literally “just some guy”)

but, looking at it from my POV, can he really be considered “normal”? (lol)

even though his senpai and the surrounding people are more “peculiar/eccentric” than not,

reiou: (he’s) surrounded by lots of bizarre people

hiroki: sorry

shun’ya: indeed, the role (character) that takahashi-san(?) is in charge of

hiroki: including me (shu), there are approximately five people who are like that

shun’ya: yessu, he’s always being dragged along by these people

in particular, there’s this senpai called “Hibiki Wataru-senpai” amongst them (laughter)

and… having received their influence

but he has also adopted Hokuto-senpai’s earnest personality

as a junior… but at the same time, he has a strong belief/conviction

(this point might be in relation to shu) other than some similarities (tl/n: for this line in particular, the “this point might be in relation to shu” was written in the CN subs.)

there’s a very serious and earnest personality, and embrace a strong conviction when doing things

so even if (his) senpai say this and that about him, he (tomoya) won’t admit defeat

even though the members of his ‘unit’ are kids that have a smaller physique, and look a little cowardly

(and) the image that they give people is that of (a fluffle of) rabbits. but what’s special is that… in the very beginning

even though he’d be dragged into all sorts of situations because of his senpai(s), he’d always

stubbornly and bravely confront the (difficult) situation

this is a charm that he possesses. i think it’s great

yuki: moreso after he’s been made leader (of ra*bits)

shun’ya: yes, yes. especially when we’ve come to Enstars 2 (!! era)

it really gave people the feeling of having inherited the title of ‘leader’

after having inherited the position (of leader) from nazuna-san

tomoya-kun is consciously (trying to act) leader-like

and demonstrate a kind of leadership style that tries to pull people together

his inner consciousness(? thought processes?) has also changed

when i’m saying his lines, i do pay (special) attention to this

(i) need to cheer myself up to do it(??)

like, i need to be even more invested in it than i was before

yuki: ohhh so that’s how it is

next up, we’ll ask the same question that we did for hiroki-san

firstly, hiruma-kun, what was your first impression of tomoya like?

shun’ya: i’d already mentioned it earlier on

(but) at the very beginning, i thought of him as a very cute and adorable little child

and that his relationships with others are very good

but then, even though he has his cute parts

at the same time, he has this very head-strong and cool (kakkoi) side to him

occassionally, this handsome side of him would emerge

and it’s fascinating. my impression of him gradually changed

and i’d think like, “woah, so he does have such a side to him!

even though he’s frequently written off as “normal / nothing much” by others, but he does have parts of him that surprise people

this character… has a very promising future

yuki: i see… (understanding noises) i think there’s a bit of overlap below and on top

over the course of the story, where did you think

your character grown the most?

shun’ya: i think i did bring it up earlier on as well…

at the very beginning when (he) debutted, it was just like in the anime

all the “WAAAAHHH~ I’ve been dragged into it, i don't want it, nooooooo”

but gradually, he would face any difficulties head on. and he would also be brave enough to make his own opinions/views known to his senpais.

and the latter resulted in (him) saying “i don’t like you”

yuki: he became brave enough to say it…!

shun’ya: yes, he dared to say it. i think… this is how he’s grown

yuki: so at the very start, he only knew how to hide in the dark and want to grow

shun’ya: speaking of which, one of Ra*bits’ most prominent themes is “growth”

and tomoya-kun has already embodied this sort of growth

yuki: that’s right…

shun’ya: if (you) follow the story’s progression, you’d be able to feel his growth

yuki: becoming the group’s representative and becoming more reliable

well, hiruma shun’ya-kun, when compared to tomoya-kun, what similarities do the both of you share?

shun’ya: (in a deep voice) similarities…

i suppose his confidence to try (new things)

or when he runs into obstacles and feels very dejected

i feel like there’ s some similarities between our profession as seiyuu

everytime a goal has been met, (we’ll) run into a new problem

during this process, (we’ll) continuously grow. this is also the main theme that underpins tomoya-kun’s story

his attitude of constantly breaking through barriers resonates with me

and i admire that a lot

yuki: as it turns out, there is a deep connection with one’s private life

shun’ya: right… though i’m not sure if it’s because i’m in charge of (voicing him) that’s why i think we’re similar

or it’s because we’re similar, that’s why i performed this role

somewhere down the line, the boundaries have blurred

yuki: what an interesting feeling of distance

in the end, i made the decision to do surgery

Patois is mostly an oral language, while it has no official spellings for words on paper there are still some words and articles that have a spelling or two that's accepted by local peeps to use in day to day writings like in text messages.

Muddah isn't the best way to write Mother, gets the pronounciation all janked up. Mada works best, shorter and sounds closer to the actual pronounciation. Or you could go with the other alternative of Mumma (pronounced more like muh-ma).

Pum-pum is incorrectly written. No upstanding jamaican is gonna take the time and use a - when you're cussing someone out over text. What is this school? You either slap those two pums together as one word or put a space between em. We ain't got time for proper punctuation here! And regardless, pumpum is still a rather soft way to go about it. Jamaican cussing out is harsh as fuck. Try pussyhole instead to really get your point across.

You used bumboclaat incorrectly! C'mon man! While there isn't a true and definite usage of bumboclaat it is odd to use it at the end of the sentence like that. Usually it comes before, it works almost like an adjective most times, and it can also work as a standalone being just said by itself, how fun! And there's also alternative to bumboclaat such as rassclaat, bumborassclaat, bumbopussyrassclaat, and so on and so forth. The cursing in patois allows for much versatility and endless combinations so get creative!

All in all i'd say your hatemail has seen much improvement from yesterday evening and i'm very glad you took my advice and did research. But still!

Your sentence is too bland! Too barebones! And it still has too much english in it! If I were to take your sentence and transform it to really make it work i'd take it from:

And transform it into:

Do you see how much a difference that makes? One's a lot more colourful than the other isn't it? Though you aren't a patois speaker by nature so i'm not sure if you can even read that properly.

All in all an improvement but still not enough to garner a much better grade i'm afraid. 5/10, you get the extra mark for attempt but didn't gain anymore for incorrect usage and a glaring lack of creativity.

Do you have any idea why Yam's name is left unvocalized in Atlus' translations? He's stuck as "Ym" even though Anat obviously isn't left unvocalized as "'nt" to stay true to the Ugaritic script rather than pronounciation like in his case. It's a bizarrely specific choice.

So he first appeared romanized in 2009 with Devil Survivor.

From my brief interactions with one of the Atlus localization editors at the time, they used J.A. Coleman's The Dictionary of Mythology: An A-Z of Themes, Legends and Heroes as an aid, so it could come from there. I can't find a version of it online to verify Yam's entry.

But even if that isn't the source, this was also the era where Atlus USA was seemingly intentionally using alternate spellings for demons, if available, and not necessarily what the Japanese spellings implied. Strange Journey introduced Ghede as Guedhe (logical), Gomory as Gemori, and, maybe most infamously, Mithras as Mitra. Heck, even Mastema instead of "Mansemat" (another good choice). It could have been a conscious effort to isolate SMT-related results in searches and perhaps Yam just got swept up in it as "Ym."

Alternatively, they would use the romanizations found in the Pandemonium books:

And that sure ain't it. This was probably more of a Nocturne-era practice (Gurulu as Gurr, etc.).

Not sure if this was pointed out already or if this matters to anyone, but the chinese character spelling for the city of July (and the reason for why there's an alternative romanization 'JuLai', to highlight to the fact they made the city an asian-cyberpunk metropolis in Tristamp) is 儒來.

The spelling seems to be purely phonetic (for pronounciation purposes only) and isn't supposed to mean anything, but the characters used for it are:

儒 (Jyu)- confucianism and 來 (Lai) - next, to become, to approach or arrive

hang 'em high - YEE THE FUCK HAW. a 100m sprint in song form. we NEED to make more fanart for this one maybe this is just because i've been writing a western for the past almost two years but we NEED to embrace hang 'em high's yeehaw punk. it is ESSENTIAL. manages to be its own self-contained story while also working within the context of the demo lovers; some of the songs on revenge work better as parts of a whole, but i think that hang 'em high's versatility isn't given its due because it stands alone in its' western influences (which is laughably fitting). some very fun vocals and weird pronounciations from mx gargling into the mic

How to learn kanji effectively and why people find it so hard + comparing with Chinese characters

Kanji is definetly hard to learn yet as someone who has studied Mandarin Chinese (simplified and traditional charecters / mainland China and Taiwan) I have never heard so many complaints for kanji as I have for Chinese. I find that interesting as Chinese charecters are clearly harder since they are used more but I think I know the reason why.

Chinese characters are essential and are used all the time; in Japanese there are 3 writing systems used and so people are more tempted to use the easier writing systems. Because of this, people tend to ignore kanji (especially as a beginner) instead of accepting it as part of the language, biting the bullet and learning it.

Of course I'm not saying kanji is easy, in fact even as someone who already knew a lot of Chinese characters before starting my Japanese studies, it was still very hard and often frustrating.

Now, for my tips:

*Note that these are just things I do or things I have found helpful. Everyone learns differently so don't take my words as gospel.

1.Never read a text that has charecters removed as that would not happen in real life; remember kanji is an essential part of Japanese that has to be learnt. When you don't know the meaning of a kanji, look it up (you may have to do it a few times in the future as well to properly remember it)

2.Make sure to look up the stroke order of every new kanji you come across. Also if you're interested, Japanese has different stroke order rules to Chinese which was hard for me to get used to at first. Plus, not every character has the same meaning in both languages and there are also Japanese-specific characters.

Examples:

Different stroke orders = 王，生，馬

Different characters (Japanese-specific)

Simplfied: 两 / 广

Traditional: 兩 / 廣

Japanese: 両 / 広

3.Learn the kanji in words as they come (don't try to memorise every pronounciation of the kanji and the associated words). For example, when learning the word for 'I' - you only have to remember 私 and the pronounciation in that context (wa-ta-shi) and not 無私 (for example) meaning 'selfless' where the pronounciation of 私 changes to 'shi'

And finally, enjoy the process. Kanji may be difficult but plays a massive role in Japanese culture and is used all the time. It's a beautiful writing system that actually makes it easier to read Japanese (as it takes up less space and the use of hiragana without any spaces as the alternative would be very annoying to read).
