She was quietly humming along to the radio before he cut her performance short, and had been gazing out upon the forest beside them, marvelling at the stillness of the trees and admiring the occasional wildlife that would step out into their moonlit spotlight.

Tucked in the passenger seat, she’s completely safe to watch him as he looks straight ahead. She observes him, notices his thoughts go through his mind.

They have a combined forty-three years of schooling between them, but there is little they can do in the face of a smoking black engine. Scully is half tempted to pull out her gun and shoot it, just for the satisfaction.
After the rental breaks down, Scully insists she and Mulder walk around until they find a signal.
20 Chapter 6: Six
He does not slow down. Neither does he answer her for a long moment. "Patrick Crump," he says finally, and she waits for him to continue. He maneuvers neatly around a slower car in front of them. "I can't shake that feeling. I feel that same desperation, Scully; I understand his intense need to keep moving in the face of inevitable doom."
She frowns and reaches for his head. "You have pressure in your ears?"
He ducks her touch. "Not there," he says. "Here." He touches his chest, and then looks quickly at her to see her reaction.
Post Drive Scully helps Mulder to realign his thinking.

They walked as fast as they could towards the car, and, upon reaching it, she dug into his pockets until she found the keys. She unlocked it as quickly as she could before easing Mulder into the passenger seat. With the overhead yellow glow of the car lights, she could assess just how bad the damage was. His entire torso was stained crimson and his pale skin was covered in a sheen of sweat.

Post Syzygy Scully wonders what her father would have thought of Mulder.

“Hey Scully,” he says from the passenger seat, with the back of his head resting on the headrest and chair reclined.
That’s his sixth hey Scully since they’ve left Tallahassee. Mulder has refused the EMT’s advice to visit the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, claiming that he’s got his personal doctor traveling with him.
Post Detour Mulder wants to see America from the backseat with Scully.
Fireworks
“No talking later, Mulder.”
Out of the blue, she announces.
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t want to be shouting back and forth. My throat’s been…hurting a little since this morning.” She rubs her eyes with one hand, looking like a child getting out of bed, “I might be coming down with somethin’.”
He bites his tongue so he won’t say, how come you didn’t say anything to me?
AU-- Post FTF Mulder drives Scully to see fireworks.
The Straightest Road in Texas
There is so, so much more to life, he now knows. And it’s right next to him, riding in this car, laughing at his memories. Well, laughing with him at his memories.
They have taken a lot of casualties last summer, but like the hero in the movies, he walks away with the girl.
Dating-- Mulder and Scully bond over a car guessing game.

He continues to drive, it’s so hot today that the asphalt could melt. There’s nearly no pedestrians around, and the sun is blaring so brightly that looking at it makes him dizzy.
Dating-- Mulder distracts Scully from fuming over the heat.
Barnes Corners
“Does a sailor’s daughter want to live at the same place as the fisherman’s daughter?” He keeps asking.
“That depends on which daughter you ask.” Scully admits that she has been thinking about Missy tonight as well. Both Pendrell and Max remind her of Charlie, who she hasn’t seen for a while....
“I’m asking the one that’s sitting in the car with me.” Mulder simply replies. “Would you like to live close to the water?”
Post Max Mulder fishes for future plans from Scully.
A Mother’s Choice
Scully did not put her baby down for the next five day. She felt like even William thought he had enough cuddling, as he began to look at her with slight concern, something so identical to his daddy when he worried.
“How ‘bout a trip, buddy?” She said to her baby, wondering how much an eleven-month-old could understand, and how crazy it was to travel with a baby, one who still needed his bottle at night, goes through diapers like they were bathroom tissues, and wouldn’t sleep unless she sang him a lullaby.
AU-- S9 Scully regrets the adoption; and TLG help her put her life back together.
The Old Man’s Choice
He went with the raspy-voice old man without telling anyone. He was a smart boy and knew he wasn’t supposed to talk to strangers, let alone getting into a car with him, but something told him that this old man, grandpa or not, really knew his birth parents.
AU-- S9 CSM takes William from his adopted family and hands him over to Mulder.

He was overly polite and it bothered her, but she could see he was remorseful even if he didn’t fully understand why he’d irritated her and she couldn’t turn him down no matter how hard she tried.
Post Syzygy Scully fumes to the airport, on the plane, and while Mulder drives her home.

“Scully, we are on a highway where a car has not driven past us for at least 15 minutes. Neither of our cell phones are working, it’s pouring rain outside, and we are at least a mile away from the motel. Please tell me how lightening the mood would make any of this any better?”
She stared at him, her eyes now as angry as his appeared.
Mulder stews over Kersh's case until Scully gets out, stands in the rain, and definitively changes his mood.

“I’m gonna need an explanation,” she said and he nodded.
“So the doll wasn’t the only thing I found.”
“Obviously,” she laughed as he looked at the car in his hand.
Post Empedocles Scully teases Mulder with the pizza man while he vroom-vrooms a little car over their soon-to-be baby.
A Patchwork Heart
He filled the silence in the car, chatting about everything. It was very different from any other man she had traveled with in the past. Jack usually had a topic planned ahead of time, thus the car ride was spent wisely, as he used to say. Ethan liked listening to classical music and for the short time they were together, she heard more Bach and Beethoven than she ever wanted to hear again.
But Mulder, though not her boyfriend, thus not an entirely accurate comparison, loved to discuss anything and everything.
Post Revival Scully ruminates over past driving excursions.

Once Dana is in the passenger seat, Mrs. Scully grasps my forearm and assures me, "I'll call you when we know something." It was only a momentary touch, but it somehow makes me feel completely at ease. All at once I understand without a doubt where Scully gets all her strength from.

Home from the Hospital
She smiled when she saw him. It lit her tired looking face.
"I'm free. Let's go." Dana picked up her small bag and they headed for his car. The ride to her home was silent. When they pulled up in front of her building, she turned to look at him.
"Would you come in for a little while, Mulder? I'll make you some of my gourmet coffee, and I know my mother left one of her chocolate cakes."

The Reprimand
Dana felt herself being moved or thought she did. Her face was no longer pressed against glass but rather against a familiar and comforting warmth. She felt something brush the top of her head, gentle lips. The words "I'm sorry," were whispered quietly. She was somewhere half between being awake and asleep in a twighlight world of incredibly pleasant dreams. It didn't feel like a dream though. The words were so distinct and the touch so real.
Post Paper Hearts Scully gets flak from all sides after Mulder's foolhardy decision.

She might know he needed sleep, but she would never convince Fox Mulder.
"Not a word, Mulder," she warned. "I'm tired, but you are exhausted. I'm driving."
Talitha Cumi Scully drives Mulder while Tena is being transferred.
Breaking the News
As much as he didn't like the idea of the older woman driving alone to Pennsylvania, he could see by the set of her mouth that she was determined. He had learned about that expression from her daughter. Unlike his mother, Maggie Scully was capable and sensible. And, though he hated to admit it, Margaret was right.

He held his throbbing ankle off the ground. All that driving hadn't been good for it. Scully would kill him if he couldn't walk tomorrow. "Mulder, Samantha *is* the X-Files. Nothing else matters, right?" She hated saying it, hated the rainy-night memory that flashed through her mind, full of innocence and closeness.

S4 Mulder tries to run off on a possible suicide quest-- Scully, however, won't let him go alone.

i thought it was interesting the way the show adapted this quote from the book in 3x03 (the parts the show used are bolded):
“I have never known [the alethiometer] so confused,” she said. “There was lots of things it said. I think I got it clear. I think so. It said about balance first. It said the knife could be harmful or it could do good, but it was so slight, such a delicate kind of a balance, that the faintest thought or wish could tip it one way or the other… And it meant you, Will, it meant what you wished or thought, only it didn’t say what would be a good thought or a bad one.”

in the book, the question iorek tells lyra to ask is whether or not he should repair will’s knife. in the show, the question he tells her to ask is whether or not she should go to the land of the dead once the knife is repaired, pivoting the moment from being only about will to being about both will and lyra - both of their thoughts and wishes that could tip the balance.
i liked that the show expanded the scope of the quote, but i was still a tiny bit disappointed that they left out the last bit: “...only it didn’t say what would be a good thought or a bad one.” the thought, the wish that tips the balance, that makes it fall - the inevitable fall - the alethiometer says, it’s not fated to be good or bad, it’s up to them, it’s their choice of what to make of it. it’s like in the beginning of the subtle knife when lyra asks the alethiometer whether will is a friend or an enemy, and it tells her, “he is a murderer.” the alethiometer doesn’t actually answer the question; it doesn’t tell her will is a friend or an enemy, because it tells the truth, and the nature of her and will’s relationship isn’t a set truth, it’s up to them. it’s their choice. (@amazalina explores this more thoroughly and eloquently here.) anyway so i do wish they had kept that last bit

damn it i unfollowed you opening your inbox it's the second time something like that has happened this week okay so!
i remember you said it's the scene that introduced you to it! is it the scene that you saw first or was it the scene that made you want to watch it, or are they the same thing? and what in particular would you say struck you in it that made you go OKAY i'm definitely watching that entire show

So I watched txf from the start but it was just a random show that I'd heard of and knew was a pop culture thing and also....Kate McKinnon is a vocal xf and Gillian fan so had been meaning to find out what the fuss was about for a while. I was literally hooked from the pilot,,,it was just my vibes, I obsess so easily - this was something else.
BUT I had no idea of the extent of the fandom and stuff until around this ep I think I started googling like if Mulder and Scully ever got together (to try and save some heartbreak like when I googled if Jim and Pam stayed together in the Office - RIP my xf optimism) and I remember an article talking about 'tcotr' and how it was like a huge moment in the show for OG fans. Like I always do, I watch things at a pretty speedy pace so can never pinpoint for certain when thoughts about the show occurred,,, but it was the start of me knowing that I was entering something much larger than I could ever have imagined before!
Maybe something about how electric and free the scene feels to me in a calm way like you could see the static in the air between them but they are relaxed? like you said about Scully talking about Ahab (and everything else you said) and not realising what she's projecting onto mulder there doesn't seem to be any awkwardness it's banter but It's sincere. maybe I sensed something different from what I'd been watching before. not even different just the change of setting and the focus on two lonely bodies in the dark just emphasises everything that's not being said between each thing that is? a couple of best friends in love causing me to internally scream in excitement as something started to shift maybe? the smiles, the gazes. I generally have no idea why I feel certain ways, I just do.
Then I still had no idea about people being around on Tumblr and stuff until I read someone's dissertation online about XF Lesbians and the Scully effect and I thought THAT is where I want to be. And now I'm here.
sorry I tend not to think too much in words it's hard and have never had a coherent thought connected to txf I don't think so enjoy my confusingly arranged letters of the alphabet.

currently reading: yesterday i finished the hating game by sally thorne, which maria recommended to me - it was fun! soon starting fiona and jane by jean chen ho, which someone (i think keepthemclose?) also recommended or had on their to-read list. reading the synopsis i think it will affect me deeply
last song: wish by choi yuree from hometown cha cha cha. i have yet to find an english translation that satisfies me but still "i only want to be loved poorly" in the context of the main characters hits hard
last series: twenty five twenty one (ep 13). crying. cannot articulate at the moment.
last movie: the hating game lmao watched yesterday after finishing the book and maria u were so right it's not that good :( it took the book's skeleton beats, quipped through emotional moments, and completely omitted all the couch scenes where they actually talk to each other?!!!!

tell me about field trip <3
it’s primal! I mean those two skeletons are in the same position mulder and scully are in on the bed at the end of “the truth,” and even if I don’t believe anyone other than vince was ever intentionally trying to do continuity, it’s definitely screaming something at me about how these two are going to be together at the end of it all. real hozier’s “in a week” vibes. mulder and scully are home with each other. I think this episode says a whole lot about mulder and scully’s insecurities around how they challenge each other, which they’re both starting to take personally (love this post from @thegrotesckque) because they don’t know where this relationship is headed. and I think it’s sweet that above all field trip affirms for them that they like being challenged by one another, and that it’s not a problem in their relationship but a strength of it. they push each other because they trust and care about each other so much. ultimately they’d each sacrifice everything if it meant the other could find what they’re looking for. field trip is high romance

what is your favorite thing to do when you come home from a crazy day at work?
great question! today i took a shower using my lavender soap <3 then i put on my fluffy slipper socks <3 all i really want to do is take a nap but i am just laying here on my couch relaxing under a blanket. trying not to go insane when i think about how i have no idea what my caseload looks like next year (im a speech-language therapist) because our work organization is restructuring and everything is a mess <3
