alsooooooo i haven’t done one of these in a while, so i wanted to do a “9 years of yuuya drawing” comparison under the cut! maybe i’ll do one of these for other characters too later....... but they won’t go back as far to 2015 because yuuya was my First Love...
2015: very early digital art era.... did not really understand how layers and coloring worked.... i also think this was drawn on firealpaca?? or maybe sai. one of those
Tumblr media
2016: got my own digital tablet!
Tumblr media
2017: big year of drawing... discovered the watercolor brush on sai and then went wild with blending colors everywhere
Tumblr media
2018: lots of practice and experimentation with colors. started making merch. but clearly i was still drawing a lot of “anime character at a 3/4 angle facing left” LMAO
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2019: less drawing happened this year. decided to go simpler with coloring, but i think lines/style improved.
Tumblr media
2020: no yuuya example for this year... i did do a couple yuuya doodles (and 1 yuuya commission) but mostly did other big drawing projects and so the yuuya drawing got put to the wayside : (
2021: no more fancy coloring here! but lines and style are probably better??
Tumblr media
2022: went through my egg yuuya phase
Tumblr media
2023: lines are better i think!

Vought R&D Lab
March 1st
There was a stir outside his office that made Jonah Vogelbaum look up from his reading to see Frederick Vought, founder, and CEO of Vought-American, crossing the lab accompanied by his first successful Comp V test subject, Liberty.
“Jonah, how did phase two of the experiment go?” Vought inquired of his head R&D scientist.
“Better than anticipated, I couldn’t have set up the introduction any better,” Vogelbaum said, leaning back in his chair.
“As previously discussed, we called Soldier Boy in for what he believed was routine testing and had the subject set up a predetermined spot so we could film the encounter. Let us move to the projection room so you can see for yourself how it went.”
Nodding his acquiescence, Vought got up and, holding his elbow out for Liberty to take, proceeded the researcher to the designated room.
Once the party was seated Vogelbaum signaled for the projectionist to start.
The film opens in the sterile white lab with scientists and others carrying out various tasks around a colorful area rug with cartoon animals where a thirteen-month-old girl in a sunny yellow dress sits trying to stack wood blocks her tiny hands lack the coordination needed.
A minute later a pair of men in deep discussion appears in the frame, “I was walking him out and, as prearranged, Ms. January accidentally drew his attention,” an attractive woman drops some files she’s carrying.
The man dressed in a military-style outfit gallantly helps pick them up, giving her his trademark smirk as she flirtily smiles back. Thanking him for his help he watches her walking away appreciating the sway of her hips under the pencil skirt when he gets a surprised expression and asks Vogelbaum something that made him laugh and waves for him to follow.
“As his physiological tests have indicated the unusual presence of the subject sparked his curiosity.”
The camera pans down to the girl then a pair of well-fitted brown and maroon boots appear in the frame before Soldier Boys squatting down.
“We made a good choice investing in the Arriflex 35 IIC, color quality is much better,” Vought offhandedly commented.
The camera zooms in for a closeup of Soldier Boy breathing deeply cocking his head puzzled.
“Seems the hypothesis of adding the attractants in utero came to fruition.” Vought comments sounding pleased.
The Supe makes an inquiry and Vogelbaum smiles gesturing for him to sit down before getting up and disappearing from frame.
“I find it reprehensible,” Liberty voiced with disgust.
“My dear, you sound jealous, like a jilted lover.” Vought’s observation made Liberty huff, “you were the one who decided not to pursue anything more than a brief fling with Soldier Boy during that orgy back in ‘52.”
“Soldier Boy has never shown a predilection towards pedophilia,” Vogelbaum comments, “in fact, despite his libertinism, he still possesses strong personal morality, an interesting holdover from when he was human, and becomes incensed when presented with scenarios that violate them. The reactions he is displaying are purely subconscious physical responses to pheromone attractants the subject is producing.”
The girl picked up the block and held it out to the Supe who mirthfully smiles when Vogelbaum, just in view, snaps a picture with a 35 mm camera.
“So what do your physiological tests say about his stance on incest?”
Tumblr media
Soldier Boy lay there unsure of what happened last night.
Butcher and his school-boy bitch leaving gave him the opportunity to fall back on a highly questionable but tried and true technique of extracting information because he had enough of Y/N’s evasiveness.
What he hadn’t expected was how fast it'd hit her and after being called out was left sitting there pissed off with a hard on when everything went 180.
After finding the shadow box she started having a conversation with someone the Supe quickly figured out it was from when he visited Vought over the years. Shaking her awake she suddenly bursts into tears, and without thinking sat down wrapped his strong arms around her began softly singing the tune she’d hummed.
He felt Y/N move, burrowing closer to his warmth, a leftover from the Russians tests, felt her leg brush against his morning wood making his hips twitch and rub against her cunt felt warm wetness dampen his sleep pants.
The Supe remembers how prudish women were expected to be when it came to fucking in the decades proceeding the sexual revolution, one reason he co-started Herogasm with Liberty, fucking firecraker that one.
Man, all those years the puss flowed freely in his direction, or did it?
He never lied all the times he told Crimson Countess he loved her but she’d been plain vanilla, almost never initiated relations, and going anal was an absolute no go so what was he supposed to do but find it somewhere else?
Now he couldn’t stop hearing Grace Mallory’s fucking annoying but maybe accurate assessment that women gave in to his pressure and manipulation of them. Were they actually scared of what he’d do to them if they didn’t let him fuck them?
~~~
You felt his hip rub against your snatch and crack an eye open to see the Supes morning wood tenting his sleep pants and for some unfathomable reason can’t resist some tit for tat for last night.
Nuzzling his neck, fuck his scents making you crazy, slip a hand under the waistband lightly brushing fingertips along the top of his hardening cock, teasing his slit before tracing the pulsing vein underneath ending by cupping his bare balls.
“I feel you took my advice,” you breathily whisper and nibble on his ear while firmly squeezing them making his hips jump, “umph yeah, my cock and balls look fabulous..” withdrawing your hand, ”..hey, the fuck?!”
“I didn’t suggest it to feed your fucking ego!”
“Who’s being a cock tease now!”
“Alright,” running your fingers through his treasure trail, “what’ll you give me in return for finishing you off?”
Soldier Boy subconsciously sucked on his bottom lip contemplating..fuck, no man should make that gesture so sexy you could come untouched just watching him.
 “Whatcha want?”
“Mmm, to frenchtoast me.”
His head popped off the pillow.
“Huh??”
You shift to look him in the eye, “I'm craving to frenchtoast and then have you whip the cream.”
Sitting up tugs his shirt over his head, “only if you get me off how I want first,” the Supe waits to see if you’ll take the proposition.
You move to kneel on the bed and unbutton your sleep shirt as he shoves his pants off and leans back on a forearm sliding his other hand down his broad chest, fingers trailing like yours did gather the precum he’s now leaking, and started bucking his hips up and down, fucking himself into his fist like it’s a fleshlight.
The recesses of your mind scream some things off but your craving is overwhelming and rational thought evaporates.
If he wants to tease, you can too.
Tossing the shirt, you spread your thighs and push two fingers into your sodden channel mimicking him.
 “Stop,” he harshly orders and your immediate obedience made him smirk before lying back on the pillow and growling, “bring it up here,” you knee up the mattress and when he circles his index finger, turn before straddling his face.
“Fuuck baby,“ his breaths warm over your bare skin, “so beautiful without bearded clam,” takes his time his calloused fingers explore your bare mound before parting your lower lips, “haven't even started and dripping with passion for me, have to have a taste..so fucking sweet,” his tongue delving deeply makes you keen loudly.
“Hmm, I like that,” he pushes you up enough to watch you kitten licking his drooling slit, “don’t worry, I won’t forget to whip the cream,” he teases.
Tumblr media
You’re sitting naked on the kitchen table, legs hanging off each side playing with your clit completely titillated by his assets: resplendent features dusted in cinnamon freckles, brawny shoulders, still feeling it in your hips where he stretched you to accommodate their breadth when he..
“I can’t hear how wet you are,” Ben casually but sternly comments when he finishes eating.
You can’t stop the full body quiver when pushing two fingers deep into your sopping, overused pussy making it squelch, vaguely aware no one but him has ever made you so lecherous you’re obeying everything he orders you to do.
“Never had such a cum drunk fuck duck like you,” he seizes both your ankles lifting up places your feet flat near the tabletop's edges, “show me that pretty plug.”
Laying back you lift your hips up and the change of angle makes your inner muscles clench your fingers as his play around the plugs' large, bejeweled end starts slowly withdrawing it, stretching your rim around its widest point then reinserts it, repeating the action again and again.
“I want you to squirt all over my hand and this table now.”
His command sent your overstimulated self off the cliff.
Tumblr media
The vibrating of your phone is incessant and annoying the fuck outta you.
Tossing back the covers notice the wetness coating your thighs and reaching down barely brush your pussy when a massive orgasm slams through you and collapse back onto the bed, unable to vocalize as your body’s pulsating for fuck knows how long.
When you're reasonably lucid again get up knocking the cell on the floor, its lock screen lit up displaying two days have passed and you had no fucking clue how but knew who to start with in figuring it out.
Finding Soldier Boy asleep in the recliner with several bottles of liquor on the end table pisses you off and gave into the impulse to slap the bejesus outta his face.
“The fuck was that for!”
“Wha’ yu’ guv m’?”  Your words are slurred and he squints, not initially understanding, “I ground up the leftover benzos in some apple juice for us to get some sleep because we’ve been non-stop fucking for two days and my dick needs a break!”
Shaking your head take a breath and try to enunciate, “wha’ the fuc ya put in tha’ bunt Ben’amin?”
“Reefer mixed with MDMA..”
You stupid fucking bitch, letting your guard down with Soldier Boy and shouldn’t be surprised at his duplicity.
Of course, it’s your luck he used the one drug that overrides the compound you take to keep your system functioning normally start panicking, wobbling in the direction of the kitchen get as far as the doorway when he grabs and presses you between him and the wall feel his hardening length against your bare thigh, “where the hell do you think you’re going?”
“Bas’mnt..need meds..stop ‘is..”
“Fuck me dead!” He scoop you up bridal style strides for the basement door kicking it inwards descends down the stairs and sensor lights flickered on revealing a small lab caught sight of the medical bed depositing you on it.
“Where’s the stuff?”
“Fridge, am’r bott’l,” Ben opens the countertop fridge retrieves the colored glass vile searches around for a syringe to draw it up.
“Cab’it, ster’l bag,” finding the right one grabs a steel tray with the bag laying in it deposits it on the swing arm table opens it, “what the fuck’s this?”
He picks up a funny-looking instrument with an attached light reminding him of a duck’s bill when it dawns on him.
“Can’t inje’t, skin like yor’s, ya hav’t go in cer’ix.”
Any other time the look of horror crossing his face would’ve made you laugh but now was sooo not the moment, “are you shitting me? I can’t do that!”
 “Not li’k I can re’ch.”
“I didn’t sign up for this,” you give him an imploring look, “alright, alright..good thing I already know my way around your pussy.”
He helps you place your feet in the stirrups, “you’re gonna have’ta talk me through this,” he holds up the speculum, “how the hell does the duck-thing work?”
Tumblr media
“I’m not a bad guy.”
Soldier Boys slouched in leather wingback lifts the liquor bottle to his lips draining a third before dangling it over the chair's arm between his fingers, watching Y/N sleeping in his bed.
“That’s what I told powder puff when he asked about midtown and you know the kicker, I meant it. I never mean to hurt anyone that doesn’t deserve it but shit happens, that’s life. I was the guy who stepped up and did what was needed, like a real man does.
Vought should’ve let me choose my own team. Fucking Payback..bunch of no-talent, second-rate wannabe hacks! Couldn’t even hit a fucking mark on the first let alone the tenth take and if it wasn’t for me, they'd been farmed out to some bumfuck city..fucking ingrates,” chugging another third.
“When they turned on me, all of them put together still couldn’t take me out, needed some fucking Commie nerve gas, and know what’s ironic, I wanted out, but they couldn’t let me graciously bow out, settle down and have a family, had to have a big, theatrical shitshow with me going out in a blaze of glory, turn me a fucking martyr.”
Fucking Vought.
“Don’t get me wrong, it was great at first; all the booze, broads, and bennies I wanted. Then after the war came the fucking acclamations,” he paused remembering, “yeah, it was great.  Then a couple of decades go by I began wishing I’d actually done those things my bio says,” takes a swig, “Omaha beach, killing Nazis by the dozen, being a real hero not used as a fucking prop, a pretty face to slap on their fucking propaganda and those stupid movies,” draining the bottle drops it.
“You think I wanted to make that cheesy calypso album in ‘57? Always wondered if I had strangled Legend, would it have got me outta it? Hell, I could’ve been the next Jerry Lee but noo, had to do what I was ordered because of my fucking contract.”
Getting up he staggers to a dresser where lying on top are a handful of files dating from 1965-1985.
“The evidence is right here,” he taps the files, “what’s happened between us since I walked through your front door..all your goddamn fault for hiding the truth!”
-Research assistant is scribbling notes when Vogelbaum joins them outside testing lab#4 viewing window.
-The subject is face-up on padded table, strapped down with the strongest restraints after destroying the original ones, somehow still twisting around in them.
-The subject's naked skin is splotchy and covered in sweat mixing with what written file states is vaginal fluids they are currently profusely excreting.
-Research assistant to Vogelbaum.
“The subject's fecundity schedule has been consistent, and, in this cycle, vials have stayed stable the last four days, a vast improvement since its initial induction.”
-Research assistant flipped some paperwork, “however, other tests still suggest waiting a minimum of three years for the subject to be physically mature enough for maximum yield.”
-Vogelbaum is nodding.
“I’ve been advised by Stan Edgar the upper echelons are deliberating a change of circumstance for Soldier Boy due to the uptick in his recent antics and we should consider developing alternative plans if they come to fruition.”
-Research assistant.
“Dr. Steptoe and Edwards have contacted us concerning our interest in their research and they have a test case that's looking very promising.” Researcher informs Vogelbaum, making him smile.
-Vogelbaum.
“Excellent. Continue monitoring the subject's vitals and as long as they remain stable, hold off giving the correctives, let’s see how long this estrus lasts.”
What if Comic Shorts...but Star Wars?
Random idea I had a little while ago to redesign Comic Shorts characters as if they were from the Star Wars universe. I started with Tailii, and eventually made the rest in Hero Forge, so that's what's going on in this post.
Tumblr media
Tailii Raisa, human female. Throughout her career as a "treasure hunter" she has built up quite a collection of curiosities such as a Nightsister sword, a beskar pauldron, a restored antique blaster, pieces of Phase I Clone Trooper armor (painted to match her look), and a "lucky vest" she stole from an auction (the seller dubiously claimed it originally belonged to a famous smuggler).
Tumblr media
Zanshlou, Mirialan male. Raised on exciting stories of bounty hunter adventures, Zan entered the profession at a young age hoping to find an epic story of his own to some day tell. Unfortunately, though he is competent, the ever growing number of bounty hunters in the galaxy is making it quite challenging to stand out.
---
I originally had Zan as another human, but I figured he needed a little something to be more Star Wars-y and not just "kinda cyberpunky version of his original design." Mirialans (usually) have greenish skin, dark hair and face tattoos, so I thought that'd be perfect for Zan who's trying to build his brand as a mysterious ninja.
Tumblr media
York, Duros male. An experimental treatment for the rare skin condition that robbed him of his species' typical blue/green pigmentation has left him with significant memory loss. After assassinating the head of the medical company responsible, York went on to become a prolific hitman preferring to take jobs targeting shady corporate officers who believe their wealth makes them untouchable. He is all too happy to prove them wrong.
---
York and Buddy were a challenge. In our canon universe, they're the same type of creature. (That being a faceless pale humanoid with large black eyes.) There's not really an equivalent in the Star Wars universe, so I had to get really creative here. I ended up making York a Duros since they *kind of* have the look I wanted to go for, but their coloration is in the blue to green range, so I decided he could just have a skin condition that makes it white. My main concern is he comes off as too Cad Bane-like with his signature hat and being the same species, but whatever. Everything's a ripoff of something.
Tumblr media
"Buddy," Umbaran male. The creature known to the group only as "Buddy" is an oddity among oddities. Unbeknownst to his companions (and even himself), rather than being simply "Force sensitive" he is actually Force *hypersensitive* to the point where his mind is completely overrun by a seemingly infinite number of voices constantly feeding him conflicting interpretations of the "will of the Force." While able to speak and understand Basic, the majority of his speech comes out as unintelligible gibberish, though during brief moments of near lucidity he does express a consistent delusion of being a Jedi Knight. Zan has given him a "lightsaber" (a metal pipe painted blue) to hopefully shut him up for a while.
Buddy wears a helmet of unknown make that seems to keep him in a constant state of audiovisual overload in an attempt to drown out the voices. Whether it actually works or not is impossible to tell, but he refuses to remove it under any circumstance. L3-K0 was only able to determine Buddy's species through a genetic scan.
---
If there's not at least one character in a mysterious face-concealing helmet, are you even making Star Wars content? Buddy's backstory was actually surprisingly easy to adapt to this setting. Just instead of "weird multiverse energy broke his mind and made him immortal" it's "The Force broke his mind and made him immortal." (And yeah, there wasn't really a good place up there to throw that detail in, but Buddy is basically immortal.)
I had a couple of ideas to explain the helmet, and it's actually the reason I decided to make him Umbaran. They're pale, extremely sensitive to sunlight, and also tend to be psychic, so I thought maybe he wears the helmet to protect himself from the sun and it helps keep him from constantly the minds of everyone around him since he's a lot more psychic than the average Umbaran.
Tumblr media
L3-K0, A.K.A. "Leko," droid. A prototype tactical analysis droid, L3-K0 gained sentience when his developers were unable to find a way to memory-wipe him without also resetting his analytical effectiveness. Reasoning that the best way to improve the droid's capabilities was to allow it to accumulate experience without limits, Leko convinced his creators to allow him to freely travel the galaxy with the goal of simply learning all there is to learn about it.
Throughout his travels, Leko met and recruited several interesting individuals to form a sort of mercenary team and perform various jobs across the galaxy.
-------
So there you have it! If you want the HF links to any of these for whatever reason, here they are:
Tailii
Zan
York
Buddy
Leko
Age: 19
Pronouns: they/them/he/him or essentially, anything but she/her
Triggers: explicit mentions of suicide/self harm
DMs(open, closed, ask):  Open!
Would you like the NSFW role in the server?: Not until I app a muse 18+ please!
IC Information:
Name: Bartholomew ‘Bart’ Henry Allen II
Source: DC Comics, primarily The Flash & Impulse
Abilities: Accelerated Healing - Bart is capable of healing faster and more efficiently from injuries. For example, he can recover faster from a broken limb than a normal human can.  Enhanced Senses - Bart can hear, taste, smell, feel, and see better than most people. For example, he can hear the sound of his friend talking from across a large room. Electrokinesis - Bart can conduct electricity through his body and on some occasions use it to shock people/objects (if he concentrates hard enough!) Phasing - By vibrating his molecules at a fast enough speed, he can phase through objects/solid materials like a ghost might through a wall. Photographic Memory - Bart remembers everything he has ever experienced or learned due to a photographic memory
DOB & Age: March 15th, 2002 | 19 years old
Faceclaim: Tanner Buchanan
Role color: Red/Orange
Brief Bio:
Bart Allen was the son of Meloni Thawne and Don Allen, born in the 30th century. Don Allen was the son of famous 20th century superhero/speedster The Flash, aka Barry Allen.
Meloni was the daughter of Eobard Thawne, otherwise known as one of The Flash’s most crucial enemies, Reverse-Flash. Despite the complicated histories between both families, Meloni and Don eloped and had their son.
Bart was born with his father’s meta-abilities of superspeed. Unlike Barry, who obtained his speed later in life, Bart was born with it and therefore had issues with it. Bart’s hyper-abilities forced his body to rapidly age, to the point where if there was no intervention, Bart would die at the young age of 12 or 13. His body aged faster than his mind, meaning even though he was chronologically 2 years old, he would appear to be 12.
Bart was kidnapped from his parents shortly after birth and experimented on by the government. To prevent him from dying of his powers, Bart was placed in a VR (Virtual Reality) program. It was similar to a video game where there were no consequences to his actions. This would affect him later on. Despite the intervention and experimentation, nothing was being done to prevent Bart from his fate of dying due to his powers.
His grandmother, Iris West-Allen decided enough was enough and snuck Bart from the future back to her previous time so that, hopefully, her nephew, Wally West, could teach Bart how to regulate and control his abilities so that he wouldn’t die. Iris successfully pleaded her grandson’s case to her nephew, and Bart was saved from his death. However, things didn’t end there.
Wally did not want the responsibility of his cousin on his shoulders because of Bart’s spontaneous and reckless behavior and impaired understanding of the world. Bart was placed in the care of a fellow speedster named Max Mercury. Under the guise of being uncle and nephew, Bart and Max moved to Manchester Alabama to start anew.
Under Max’s guide, Bart spent a few years in Manchester learning how to be a normal kid his age while also balancing his superhero life alongside it. He eventually joined a team of teenage superheroes called Young Justice and became close friends with the members of this alliance.
After Max had disappeared, Bart was then placed under Jay and Joan Gerrick’s care. Shortly after the fall of Young Justice, Bart retired the Impulse name and begrudgingly became Kid Flash as he became a Teen Titan for a short period.
Miscellaneous Stuff: -  I portray Bart as homosexual. And most likely on the ace/aseual specturm when he is older, though in character he’s still testing the waters. -  At the start of the Young Justice comic, he is 5”1 ft tall ( 154 cm) & weighs 90 lb ( 40 kg). I tend to use these statistics. Also, it is commonly noted across his comic and other ones hes featured in that he appears a lot “younger” than he is!
The Arcana Echoes of the Past
@arcana-echoes
Tumblr media
[Before and after Picrews of Nel made with Lully Icon Maker]
DAY 6: FRIENDS
Below, I will be introducing Nel’s lifelong friend, Winny! The bright and bubbly daughter of merchants who seeks to travel and continue her parents’ business. Nel’s best friend from childhood until the rainforest’s demise convinced Nel she had no one left.
Age: Early 30s  Height: 5′2″  Gender: Woman  Pronouns: She/Her  Orientation: Heteroromantic Demisexual  Place of Origin: El Yunque (tropical mountain rainforest north of Prakra, same place as Nel)  Languages: Native/Fluent in 3, basic skills in several others   Favorite Season: Summer
Tumblr media
[Picrews for approximate visuals: Scuff Scotch (hair color edited with permission from the creator), Makowka OC Maker]
Back home in El Yunque, Nel was a friend to everyone. That’s just how she was! Excessively polite and respectful, wonderful with the children, and a trusted member of her community (despite her frequent magical mishaps). However, Winny was a close and personal friend who grew up alongside her.
Magic doesn’t come naturally to her like it does for Nel, but that doesn’t mean she is incapable. She isn’t too interested in doing magic anyway, but she thinks it’s an incredible talent to possess. As Nel got better at controlling her powers, Winny was always there to cheer her on. But she was also there to cheer her up when things would go awry, as they often did.
As the two friends entered young adulthood, they had a brief experimental phase as partners as they didn’t have many other options of people in town to do so with. Although Winny had broader access to people from her travels as a merchant, that idea did not appeal to her at the time. She was already close with Nel, and that made her comfortable. Not long after they started, they decided they were better as friends, but the experience helped both of them realize their orientations and preferences.
Winny’s mother is from El Yunque and made her money by selling produce in other regions, but especially in Prakra due to its proximity. This is where she met Winny’s Prakran father, also a merchant. The pair settled in El Yunque where they raised their baby girl, keeping their business fairly local until she was a little older and expressed an interest in travel.
Due to the mobile nature of the business, Nel and Winny didn’t spend much time together in the years before the forest was attacked. In fact, she and her parents were far away when it was raided and burned to the ground. They returned to find nothing but blackened earth, piecing together the tragedy and losses from whatever details they could gather while making a new life in Prakra.
Roswell Sequel Series Outline
@anheiressofasoldier Hooooo boy, are you gonna regret saying that you would be willing to read my pitch. Mwhahahahaaaa! (but seriously, thanks. I’ve been meaning to write this out since it has been so vivid in my head, down to the song that they play at the end, leading to the credits of tasteful, retro animated graphics of tabasco sauce bottles, waitress uniforms, and flying saucers...)
So let’s see if I can keep this down, somewhat...
EDIT: HAH. So long. Forgive the typos. So late and I don’t want to read through all of this when I spent so much time writing it! Not done yet...
So we open in Roswell, shots of some of the old spots that bring nostalgic feels, but years have passed: the old highway/gas station, a football practice at Roswell high, the diner (and they’re still wearing the old uniform style), UFO center, through some neighborhoods until we get to a house. We vaguely recognize it, but it focuses on an older man at a few computers, and some gentle panning reveals law enforcement memorabilia until we close in on the man’s glasses and those pale blue, worn eyes. Why it’s our beloved Jim Valenti! And he’s typing away on some conspiracy message board with wacky avatars that convey that he’s probably conversing with younger persons. There is a message for him and someone wants to meet him, to get the answers he promised. He contemplates, is reluctant, but then responds to meet him in the place that they originally agreed upon, in two weeks. He sends the message, exhaling, maybe this is a mistake... but then he looks at a picture of Kyle, grinning that Valenti smile, winning ball in his hands. Jim nods to himself, it’s decided, and he gets up to get coffee...
That’s when men in black suits bust in through the door, armed. Jim drops his cup, hands up. He’s too far from his guns, says something smart-ass to distract them... while his hands charge and a blinding flash of light comes from them.
That’s right. Jim Valenti has mother effing powers!
The men stumble about, whilst Jim dashes to the computer screens, holding a hand over them to blast out the hard-drive with energy pulses. He picks up a handgun that was strapped beneath the desk and takes out two men before he is thrown against the wall. One of the MIB has his hand raised, a supernatural opponent. None of the other MIB look phased. Jim looks up, wincing in confusion. One of the MIB asks the attacker if they should relocate Jim to “the compound” with the “others.” But the leader decides that Jim is too old to withstand any of the rigorous testing... he’d only be dead weight. He raises his hand to finish Jim Valenti off...
And we see Jim’s gaze wander back to the picture of his son, as his assailant’s hand glows...
And cut to black with a flair of cliff-hanger: Cue Roswell theme song and Roswell graphics...as it morphs from Roswell to more recognizable location of midwest city, the coast, New York, China, India, London...all tainted with something extraterrestrial/galactic... promising more of the unknown at a broader scale.
And then we start up in Cleveland, Ohio, of all effing places.
(And now I’m going to get less detailed; just thought it was important to establish the mood and intrigue first ;) Oh, and I also have like NO final name decisions for a lot of these characters, so forgive the half-assedness with these names.)
The character that we will ride on the back of to get to the characters we know and love is a hispanic youth (mid teens), who is clearly living in poverty and trying to keep his nose clean. Let’s call him...Alex. (: I had too; to honor the original). Alex is special, because he has powers, And he is a co-mod on a message board that reaches out to others with abilities. The main mod, who has been very encouraging and helpful in avoiding attention while still developing the abilities, has finally okayed meeting up for the first time with Alex (It is... was... Jim ): The halfway point that they agree upon is Nashville in two weeks. Alex has no money, but he has to find out why he has these abilities. He was dying from a shoot-out when he was young, caught in the crossfire, he was healed... it’s too hazy a memory, and ever since then, powers.  and he’s not the only one.
In real life, Alex has 1 friend who moved from New York, (let’s call him Nicky) who also has abilities and shares a similar origin story... only it was a terminal illness while living on the streets. In his dreams, however, he knows Yen...a Vietnamese-American girl who can dream walk into anyone’s dreams. They’ve never met face to face, but they have bonded. Online, however, Alex is aware of 37 users who claim to have similar experiences with “the healer”, whether they remember it or not. Descriptions vary, so they can’t nail who he/she is. Alex, Nicky, and Yen (in dreams), decide to go on an epic road trip to meet the board mod, who Alex is CONVINCED is the healer.
So we have couple episodes of teen-powered shennanigans, meeting Yen in person, meeting up with some of the other “healed” (they have their own hand signal and everything); some awesome... some fake. So they reach Nashville, in the spot... and mod never comes. Alex knows something is up; the mod never would have pulled this (father complex issues). They do some investigating, looking for clues and they find something left behind. A floppy disk... which none of them know what the eff to do with. And then, someone seeks them out. Let’s call him...Greg. Late teens, maybe early 20′s...knows everything about Alex and is able to convince Nicky and Yen that he’s legit. (but he’s totally not legit). And Alex is wary, because he always got the vibe that mod was... older? With a full grown kid. Some simple questioning, and he’s able to trip up Greg, who also doesn’t have powers.
Outted, Greg shows his true colors and summons the MIB and takes the three youths after a brief skirmish (they put up a good fight, but the MIB are so experienced with their powers), they are taken to “the Compound.” (dun dun dun). The Compound is basically a hold and experimentation facility for HUMANS with extraordinary abilities; the “healed.” Alex and crew think it’s the dark government... but it’s actually aliens; Antarians, cleaning up human anomalies left over from their failed hybrid units. And, get this: they call “Greg”...ZAN. Oh yes. Very “human” Greg is Max’s estranged son, who bounced around in the foster system, has nice shiny baby memories of being the son of a king and queen and loved... only to face a very cruel world that recognized him as nothing. He’s mostly an icon, being the son of two hybrids, but he’s though of being less by the Antarians because of his powerless genetics. He’s out to prove himself to the elitist species.
Alex, Nicky, and Yen are able to escape from the compound with some clever thinking, and rallying beaten down inmates...on of the eldest being a man who was experimented on for 3 years. Despite his once peaceful ways and dry humor, he’s now a mind-warper with mad-skillz: Kyle Valenti (oh yeah. He HATES that that is his ability; self-loathing galore). The gang picks up another female, let’s call her Roxie (cause she got no-where to go!) and Kyle decides, after seeing what’s on the floppy disk (his dad, explaining why he started the website; because it was for the terminal kids who would grow up to have abilities, just like everyone else Max healed... but more people from the outside, all over, were getting abilities as Max and pod squad were on the run. Kyle is moved, and he decides that if the 4 want to meet the one who changed them to gain closure, he would be their guide. He explains the events of Roswell and the pod squad: the teens are floored that they are wrapped up in Alien stuff.
The plan is to go connect with Isabelle Evans, but on the way, Kyle diverts the trip when he sees an advertisement...for the singer Maria Deluca touring nearby (yeah, bear with me, I promise it will pay off). Nicky and Roxie are just rabid fans for Deluca so they are totes okay with this distraction. Touching reunion between Maria and Kyle. And Maria fills him in on the three years he’s been gone:
War is coming to Earth. Kivar diverted political tensions to Earth with a very brutal and militant species. Like this specious tears through planets like a plague. Upset with Kivar, Antar sent emissaries to find one of the royal 4, from either set of hybrids, but only found Zan... who was eager to be found. With the promise of giving him powers, Zan was enlisted to track a hybrid down. He had a lead on Micheal Guerin, who seemed to be around the corner, during certain times in his life... but he was able to use Micheal to get to Max. Max thought that a reunion was to occur arranged by Brody...but he was thrown into a portal and beamed to an Antarian vessel. That was a year ago.
Deluca declines going with the group to their next stop, unable to see LIz in the state she is in, getting pulled back into it all, and on top of it all...Maria is now a single mom of an adopted toddler: a boy. He’s her whole world and there was no room for anything else. Kyle and gang bids her farewell and continue  on.
I don’t know where Isabel is, but they arrive and she has a pretty nice house, job: picture of normalcy. But she’s a wreck... and she nearly falls to pieces when she sees Kyle after three years. Yes. They were a thing at one point; she she spent every night trying to connect to his mind and dream walk with him. She has a daughter, Cassie, who looks just like her mother and fully embraces her her alien heritage as a princess; she the worst. She gets to know Alex, Nikki, Yen and Roxie, and they are floored by her abilities... that she flaunts. (no, Kyle is not the father... and neither is Jesse: DUN DUN DUUUUUN)
After Kyle and Isabel have their well deserved moment, they decide that the kiddies can’t come along, because it’s WAR, so they are to stay at Isabel’s house. And not only that... but the Parker-Evans chldren (all 3 of them) are dropped off by SERENA, Liz’s work budy from the University Lab Research Team (WHO THE EFF IS SERENA???) Turns out Serena be cool, but she’s a human who doesn’t know about any of the alien stuff (but she’s like mad smart with theoretical science). So the adults leave to go on patrol, and the teens think this sucks, though the little Parker-Evans kids are happy to have new playmates. Cassie pipes up that she’s not going to stick around, since the eldest kiddo is 13 and can handle her younger siblings so she gonna go abuse her powers to go clubing. She coaxes Alex to go with her, Roxie is down... but Yen and Nicky decide to stay at the house to protect the kids. Yen isn’t so happy that Cassie appears to be sinking her claws into Alex.
Club shenanigans, but then Alex Guilts Cassie to give a crap about what is going on outside of her comfy life and she tags along with him and Roxie as they go to shadow after the adults. And what they find is is a Michael Guerin, Isabel Evans, and Liz Parker-Evans kicking some serious alien ass. They are trying to steal aboard a vessel to get access to the Antarian ship hovering over earth. Then this armored opponent appears and nearly smears Liz across the gravel, but Micheal and Isabel are able to hold him briefly, giving Liz and chance to get a clean shot... but she hesitates. She can’t do it... and the armored figure is about to break free. Things look dire for the three, so Alex and Roxie spring to action, getting in a good shot or two, but the figure retreats back to the ship in a beam of light. Liz, instead of thanking the teens, yells at them.
It had been Max. Stripped of his consciousness and replaced with the collective consciousness (see how I’m including some book stuffs???) of Antar: their memories of King Zan poured into the hybrid vessel, Max Evans. The idea was to have their reclaimed King challenge Kivar for the throne. But King Zan, a distorted version, as memories aren’t a replacement for a SOUL... and with the temperament of a human...straight up just kills Kivar. And leads Antar into a dark age. Wah-waaaaaah.
But there’s a problem: remember how Dupe Isabel made the comment that Max’s pod set are the defectives? Too human? Well, it’s true... and Max’s body, being too human, can’t handle the energies and massive power from the crystals that he’s wielding. (it’s all about the crystals, for Antarians: they bring people back from the the dead, serve as text messages, it’s great... oh, and some probably become huge ass weapons) So basically, Max’s body is dying from being too over-extended. It’s like a rubber band that can’t snap back into shape, but just get’s looser, and looser until it just TEARS.
Then of course we have to have an episode about how the main gang got to their current states: Liz and Max of course married right away, had their first kid a few years after Isabel had Cassie. Liz got an online education and worked her way up to a position at a research Lab, where she met Serena (WHO DAH EFF IS SERENA???) Meanwhile Max works a late third shift at a hospital, or rotates around, and heals the really desperate cases. Micheal is ever vigilant to protecting Isabel and Max/Liz’s families, being a hard as nails yet doting uncle.. but he’s kind of a bar fly, even though he can’t drink (he likes the ambience), but gets squirrelly whenever a Deluca Classic comes on the jukebox. He has regrets... many regrets. He wears down Max to give the kids a normal life, get a mortgage, enroll them in public school... cause they deserve the best life experience. Isabel had Cassie pretty early on...after Jessie...Isabel hit a low, especially when she facebook stalked him to find out he had moved on. So she goes out, grabs the nearest stranger, and... well...(but it’s kinda important WHO that person was... It was human-meat-puppet Kivar. Who’s never too far from his Valondra; he’s THE WORST) Meanwhile, Kyle bonds with Isabel during her pregnancy, provides for her, has a fling with her, but it is never fully realized because Isabel freaks and needs to have control over her life and her daughters, so he becomes a cool uncle to Cassie. He opens his own garage. Maintains highly secretive correspondence with his father, when he’s lured to meet up with his dad... which was never arranged by Jim. He was taken to “The Compound”. Max does get a house with a fence for his family, and just when they settled in, they get a visit from a mysterious boy: Ethan. And Ethan says “You’re my dad.”
But the thing is, Ethan doesn’t look anything like Max: it’s all Tess. The young man has a clear memory of his mother, that fits Tess’ description, and that she loved Zan. He’s a nice guy, sweet, but has had a slew of misfortune with abusive families. He grows on Micheal... in an annoying way. After a DNA test, at the insistence of Liz, they find that Ethan shares no DNA, and is certainly not human. And a simple alien connection reveals that this isn’t Tess’ son... but Ava’s...and Rath (WHA? EW! NO! But yusss. I’m not saying it’s a good match, but it happened) And Ava did love Zan, and wanted Ethan to find Max...because she wasn’t in a good situation and had to give up her son for his best chance (OUAT ALL OVER AGAIN) since Rath would probs chuck that full-blooded alien babe at Antar for brownie points. So Ethan is disappointed but willing to depart but Micheal is all “Stay with me, twerp. But get a job and help pay rent.” Ethan makes breakfast for his grumpy new big brother/dad everyday.
Feeling awful for her unwillingness to let Ethan in right away, Liz supports Max in tracking down his biological son. He’s afraid that the same fate fell on Zan Jr. Which, fyi, Zan lived a very average life... but he could REMEMBER the alien stuff, and his mother, and another world... so basically, he loathed his family and situation. So Micheal agrees to help track down Zan, because he’s become pretty good at that kind of thing, and reunites the two, with the help of Brody... and then... well... you know how that goes.
Okay. I have to stop for the night. UGH I’m almost thru. No, but this is GREAT, writing it down. Maybe finally this idea will be exercised from my brain permanently!
Foodie Coloring Books
Completely thrilled with the Foodie’s Colouring guide and what a terrific concept!
I obtain a lot of coloring books like this however not often do I get so excited once I begin going via the pages. I’m a Foodie and a Coloring Book Addict so the 2 passions in a single place are good. First, you get enjoyable and fanciful foodie footage to paint in, all with a singular model clearly hand-drawn, none of this throw it collectively in Photoshop stuff. Next, you get pages with quotes from notable Foodies like Julia Child to paint in and hilarious footage, a favourite is an octopus with totally different cooking utensils in all eight of his “hands” I simply acquired this yesterday and usually I wait to do a evaluate however not so with this guide.
As if the enjoyable footage to paint weren’t sufficient, within the heart of this guide are some wildly YUMMY wanting sweets photographs with the recipe included. I believe I gained weight simply them however will probably be heading to the shop for substances at the moment!
The footage are one-sided so no issues with bleed via. There can also be a enjoyable quiz to seek out out simply HOW a lot of a wild Foodie YOU are.
By testing my dad and mom’ persistence as a toddler. Things had been drawn on that shouldn’t have been drawn on, utilizing issues that shouldn’t have been used to attract with. I referred to as it my ‘experimental phase’, my dad and mom’ referred to as it their ‘blue phase’.
Who or what has impressed you?
For this guide, breakfast, lunch and dinner (aaand the various snacks in between) turned edible inspiration. Humble snack expeditions to the fridge started to take slightly longer because it reworked into 5 cabinets of (at some instances, decomposing) reference. A mere sandwich was by no means escorted to my mouth with no notepad as witness.I’ve a spatially inconvenient behavior of amassing massive quantities of youngsters’s image books, from which I additionally draw nice inspiration. A truth the shelving part of my native IKEA can attest to. Some discover inspiration in Tolstoy; I discover inspiration in Toy Story
.Do you want to paint in your designs or choose to have others do this? Others! I coloured within the cowl for The Foodies Coloring Book, and I can say at that time limit, I used to be experiencing little or no therapeutic profit that coloring in is thought for, figuring out that each line rebelling pencil stroke could be on present! As these illustrations had been created with the intent of being black and white, there’s nothing higher than seeing somebody breathe new life into them with colour.
What provides (manufacturers) do you advocate on your guide(s)? My favorite colored pencils are by a model referred to as LYRA. They are so lovely to carry, it makes you by no means wish to decide up anything once more. They are smudge-proof and waterproof too, particularly useful for these prone to a celebrational weep as soon as completed colouring!
Why Shoot Documentary Photography on Film?
Shooting a long term job, whether expert or individual, is a fantastic method to check out locations of photography you may not have actually formerly thought about. I understand of professional photographers who have actually explore various kinds of filters, post-processing strategies, real shooting approaches (long direct exposure, panning, unfamiliar/conventional focal lengths), and so on, as their tasks progress.
The quantity of time that can enter into a long-lasting job is actually worth benefiting from, utilizing early experimentation to establish a constant visual that can control the remainder of the job.
In my work, I have actually discovered that shooting my long-lasting jobs on movie has actually been exceptionally satisfying and a truly various experience from shooting my more instant projects digitally. It was something of a discovery to me that not all reportage work need to always be instantaneous. My early work and most of my customer based work needs a really brief turn-around time – – style, news reportage, wedding events – all of these take advantage of being shot digitally and be provided for publication within a couple of days.
However, enough of my work focuses on scenarios that can be treated with a little bit more calm and factor to consider. My long term BTS tasks in production and style, my expedition of celebration culture in the UK, and my street photography specifically are now all primarily being shot on movie. Other jobs like my work at conventions I will have both a digital and movie electronic camera, as particular images need faster publication whereas others can be reserved and examined in the future.
For deep dives like these into particular subjects and jobs, I believe that movie is a terrific choice, both for the completed visual and the workflow while shooting.
The nature of movie keeps me focused on what's occurring now and what might occur next. I can't fret about the image I simply shot, I need to constantly concentrate on the image I'm about to take. I can't examine them in the minute, and at the end of the day I'm not overwhelmed with post-processing, and can hence focus on other locations of the job in addition to my other work.
When it pertains to scanning and examining I'm able to devote a whole day to the procedure, truly offering the images the time they are worthy of, instead of relegating modifying to a night activity as it generally is for my digital files.
For jobs including travel, I discover that my movie setup is far less restricting than my digital video cameras, which need that I be connected by electrical energy to charge batteries, and disk drives to support, which I might not constantly have access to in remote locations.
Without the requirement for a quick turn-around, the advantages of movie actually do use a lot to a long term job. If it's an individual endeavor then movie can assist your state of mind, to take things more seriously and establish a much better understanding of the procedure on top of whatever story you are informing in the images.
The "procedure" likewise ends up being more direct which contributes to a much better series of work – – research study, shoot, establish, curate, release. When dealing with digital it seems like my procedure looks more like – – research study, shoot, modify, investigate some more, shoot more, modify, and so on. It is more untidy and diverse; less concentrated and with more space for interruption.
Film has a better workflow when it concerns archiving, and the procedure of examining negatives through contact sheets and scans can assist establish the instructions of a task. When it comes to last phases such as printing and looking at, the physicality of the medium is a fantastic property.
Film provides a consistency in the outcomes, which for a long term job can be important for combining possibly detached images. Choosing a particular movie stock/look to shoot a task is beneficial, and this can imply exploring to start with prior to discovering something that fits the subject.
There are numerous choices within movie to cover an ISO variety while keeping the exact same visual. Portra can presently be had as 160, 400, and 800, and the capability to push/pull suggests you can cover basically any color situations with it. Tri-X is referred to as being extremely flexible on it's own and can be pressed and pulled to fit practically any requirement. Personally, if I'm seeking to cover a series of choices in white and black I'm delighting in Delta 100/400/3200 at the minute, and discover my outcomes to be constant throughout these various emulsions as long as my direct exposure techniques are similarly constant.
I believe these factors are among the very best arguments for utilizing movie for street photography, which is perhaps among the longest-term jobs most professional photographers will carry out. There is seldom a rush with street photography both in producing and in releasing material. Without that seriousness, you have the flexibility to focus on what matters in regards to the work, the scene, and your understanding of the experience you are taking part in.
As with any approach in photography, this is a subjective subject, and although I hope I can motivate a few of you to attempt movie for the very first time or to include it in such a way you had not formerly thought about, I understand that the movie technique will not exercise for everybody. I attempt and motivate individuals to attempt a little bit of whatever, as you never ever understand what you might find, no one understands your photography much better than you.
So when it concerns deciding as considerable as this you must usually opt for your own experience, and do whatever is best for what you have the very best understanding and understanding of, and possibly more notably, what you delight in.
About the author: Simon King is a London based professional photographer and photojournalist, presently dealing with a variety of long-lasting documentary and street photography jobs. The viewpoints revealed in this short article are entirely those of the author. Bill MacKay & Katinka Kleijn: Stir and Shatter
Tumblr media
Bill MacKay (left) and Katinka Kleijn (right); Photo by Ricardo E. Adame
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Throughout their seven years of collaboration, guitarist Bill MacKay and cellist Katinka Kleijn have toed the line between composition and improvisation. “I felt like we had this strong chemistry right away,” MacKay told me a couple months ago. “Sometimes you go along for a while and you don’t know how it’s gonna build, but it seems like it has splintered into a few things.” Indeed, the duo have played together as part of countless bills, and Kleijn contributed to SpiderBeetleBee, the most recent Ryley Walker-MacKay duo record, back in 2017. What they do continues to be informed by their classical backgrounds and explorations into experimental mediums. “There’s been such a range,” said MacKay. “We’ll play a few songs, some will be compositions, some will be sketches for graphics. It’s fair to say that a lot of them have been free-form, but it feels so song-y to play with her. It feels like we’re drawing out long melodies and a lot of chaos, too, and all kinds of elements of things that are part of ourselves. It all feels like composition to me, but it’s not.” This dichotomy has formalized in STIR, the duo’s first record that came out last month on MacKay’s home, Drag City.
On paper, the album’s story is straightforward: MacKay wrote some themes, and the two played off of them. STIR was recorded at Experimental Sound Studio by Alex Inglizian, with just MacKay and his guitar and amplifier and Kelijn’s cello, with only four microphones, a couple in the room and a couple up high about 10-15 above them, in one pass through. They went through a few complete mixes with Nick Broste at Shape Shoppe to adjust to the album’s loud-quiet-loud dynamic, and then the album went on for mastering by Carl Saff. But like its labyrinthine cover, STIR is a record that rewards beneath the surface. Inspired by Hermann Hesse’s novel Steppenwolf, it shares characteristics of great novels, from its subtle foreshadowing to its callbacks that avoid wink-and-nod obviousness. Of course, the playing is as expert as you’d expect from these two, but it’s the album’s informal, yet strong narrative structure that impresses most, buoyed by MacKay’s writing.
Tonight, MacKay and Kleijn play a release show for STIR at Elastic Arts with visuals by Timothy Breen, and tomorrow at the Old Capitol Museum in Iowa City. (Brett Naucke opens tonight.) Read my conversation with MacKay, edited for length and clarity, below, where he touches on the making of the record, the history of his relationship to Hesse, and the gems in his current musical rotation.
Since I Left You: Was STIR at all informed by your and Katinka’s prior performances? Or were the songs totally new?
Bill MacKay: It was new in the sense that we had the framework and themes that I wrote for the pieces, and we had that going into it, but we also knew there would be a lot of jumping off points and we would glide around and shatter in a lot of different areas. But it was definitely our vocabulary together that was informed by prior performances. I listen to it, and even if it’s not specific thematic parts in the improvisation, it’s the colors of what we do together and this mixture that’s intriguing, of the classical elements and jazz and noise. It transcends the genres to me--it feels like a hybrid of some sorts.
SILY: You definitely have those different worlds in your contexts. Katinka’s in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra but also does noisy, experimental stuff, and you're in the folk and the experimental and jazz worlds.
BM: I [also] studied classical guitar as a kid. It was really brief, but certain things about it were so influential and stayed with me. The way things moved around, and keeping two melodies going. It made me appreciate classical music more. So we come from all these similar worlds, yet quite different at the same time. It feels unique to me. You don’t see electric guitar and cello all the time, either.
SILY: So you had the bases for the themes you had written. Beyond that, was what ended up as the final product mostly improvised?
BM: There’s a lot of improvisation on it. I suppose it would be like a lot of jazz records. You have the themes, some of them are more extended than others, and some are quite brief, but it’s the theme that informs or colorizes what follows. Sometimes we return to the themes, and sometimes we don’t. What sometimes bothered me about playing jazz is I would have a theme or melody I liked that was the head tune, but sometimes, the middle would have no connection to it. People would go off but not return to it or play threads of it. Sometimes, it was this weird sandwich, and everything was separate. On this one, we were cognizant of the melodic parts and the written material, so we came back to it. It threads its way in. Sometimes really subtly. I was listening to the other day and heard some stuff Katinka was playing that was related to the theme that was threaded in. I was happy about how it came out.
SILY: How did you go about deciding where one track ends and another begins?
BM: What we tried to do was follow what the plan of the composition was. I thought of it as the themes being separate ideas or entities that we would run together as much as possible, maybe with brief pauses. Most of it follows that: This is where the idea ends. Maybe we’d recap the idea. A couple times, the choices were definitely multi-variable.
SILY: There are groupings of track names that go together, and groupings of tracks sonically that go together, and they’re a bit different. “Hermine” and “The Hermetic Circle” and “No One Here is a Stranger”. Linguistically, the first two go together, and the idea of the third has to do with the first two. At the same time, “The Hermetic Circle” is where the record gets quieter and more playful.
BM: I was thinking about that: If people only hear the first couple tracks, they’ll think, “Oh, this is gonna be of this tenor. And it’s gonna be dark and crazy and I’m gonna be scared and all this stuff.” The phase and the dimension changes a lot with that third one. I don’t think our choices would have been drastically different, but there were parts where we said that the feeling of one went a little further or shorter because there were silences and pauses. That said, we were following a script. There was probably a moment where we would look at each other and think, “Are we plunging into this now, or playing a little more of something?”
SILY: Also, “Door to the Magic Theatre” and “A Series of Doors” go together linguistically.
BM: For something that’s as clear as that, I barely noticed it. Or I did and it went out of my mind or something. To some degree, the titles relate to Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf.
SILY: When were you first aware of that book in your life?
BM: I think it was probably as a teenager. I really got into his work so much as a teenager, Beneath the Wheel and Siddhartha and The Glass Bead Game and Steppenwolf and Demian. There was this range of books that I was reading.
SILY: At what point did you decide to make music inspired by Steppenwolf?
BM: I think it was only a little before it, but it had been on my mind for a long time. I wanted to return to Hesse more. It always seemed like his themes resonated with me. There was some kinship with his work. In that way, there was an aesthetic thing I was trying to reach for. I also felt I had already done it with others I felt the same way about. I think it was in the last couple years it really occurred to me and started writing these themes that worked.
SILY: Do you think the record follows a story or narrative?
BM: You know, I like to think that those things do in one sense, but maybe to people it would seem superficial. People often return to words and say, “A story must have words and is told in this way.” But then again, on the other hand, stories of ascension or spiritual discovery have been told so many times, like a story like Steppenwolf, but it’s his particular way of doing it that’s his identity. I hope or think that people get a similar story from what we’re doing. The beginning is like a prologue feel of setting a scene, there are feelings of chaos and struggle to some degree that enter into it, and some elegiac lyrical moments that imply certain states of mind. And there’s a feeling of a conclusion to me, and a drawn out part before that with a return of some of the themes. It feels symphonic to me in that way.
SILY: One cliche that this record avoids is the introduction as an overture. “Here’s my palate, here are all of the colors I’m going to be using throughout this album.”
BM: [laughs] I’m glad you said that. I kind of agree about those things. “Wow, this is weird, I’m getting a taste of these 4-6 themes that will be part of this long thing after.”
SILY: It’s like a rock opera.
BM: Is there a particular reason for that for you? Do you feel like they’re giving away the movie before you’ve seen it?
SILY: Somewhat. I feel like it’s just overdone and it has to be done really well. There are plenty of classic rock albums that do it that are fun and great.
BM: And plenty of symphonic works.
SILY: More than anything, I don’t inherently dislike it, but I like when things defy my expectations, especially in the context of it being a prelude or an intro. If it’s given that name or identity but then ends up not being what I think it’s gonna be, it’s a more fun experience, especially on repeat listens.
BM: That’s true. It’s something that can’t be valued enough. I got turned on to this book of stories by Denis Johnson, Jesus’ Son. It’s only 100 pages, but I got through the whole thing in like a day because I’m just so gripped. There are constant twists and turns and expectations being upended, and not in a blatant way or trying to hard or trying to shock you. It’s these completely natural occurrences. I love that, it’s so great.
Tumblr media
SILY: What’s the inspiration behind the album title?
BM: I can’t really figure out why we came to this word, but there was a lot of searching through different things. Sometimes finding titles for records is the most torturous thing. A song can be hard, too, but it’s only a chip. This is a more public, visible, longer-lasting thing. The pressure to get something that feels right is on you more. I’ll just have reams of pages of titles and things, in different combinations, on and on. Katinka and I liked [“stir”] when we thought about it because it had more meanings than we had thought of. When you think of many words, you do so only in the context of where you need it at the moment. With this, there were lots: stirring up trouble, things that stir in the night, stir your imagination, and really pragmatic things like stirring your coffee. It seemed like a good one that way.
SILY: What about the cover art?
BM: The cover art is by this fellow Marko Markovic. He’s an artist who is friends with folks at Drag City. We were looking around at a few different things, and his work was presented to us as an idea. We were looking around at different parts of it, and three felt possible, but we kept coming back to that piece. It feels in one way like it’s simple and very primal and has this square, but there’s so much going on in that woodwork and crazy labyrinth of lattice work. Katinka had a beautiful phrase: It was something that on the surface seemed really simple but as you looked closer had this intensely woven textured narrative. She said it more gracefully than me.
SILY: Is there anything that you’ve been listening to or watching lately that’s caught your attention?
BM: I just picked up this album in Burlington, Vermont at a record store by Syrinx, an band from the early 70′s. Prog rock, lots of Mellotron, a bit of Zombies and King Crimson, but kind of their own things. I’ve been grooving on that; I’m not even through it all, it’s a three-record box set. I’ve also been grooving on the last few Mary Lattimore records. And then Dead Rider. A good chunk of artists on Drag City. Whenever I go there, I often come back with a stack of records.
The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company.
Over the course of my senior year in college, I've been hard at work on a visual novel dubbed Streams of Nurture. As both a passion project and academic piece, Streams of Nurture represents an interesting case study for transforming one of my most ancient interests, food production, into an interactive affair that combines the dramatic qualities of an entertainment title with a real-world topic characteristic of serious games. In other words, I wanted to leverage the concept of "learning through play" to create a game that felt both purposeful and engrossing.
With my project officially submitted to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute database, I can now share with you the report detailing the development cycle for the visual novel. Throughout the coming weeks, I shall be publishing a subsection of the paper penned for Streams of Nurture. Each part will focus on a particular design and production aspect of the game, from the way the storytelling was conceived to the iterative art process that governed the title's presentation.
This week's post in a series of design articles explains the audiovisual development of Streams of Nurture. If you're interested in reading about the pre-production and narrative phases for my visual novel, feel free to peruse the first and second articles I published on my title’s development cycle.
NOTE: I didn't single-handedly develop the game. Although I handled the narrative design, coding and writing for Streams of Nurture, my partners Liam Miller and Dave Allen were wholly responsible for the art and audio respectively. As such, the pronoun "we" will be used to acknowledge their invaluable contribution to this project.
Artistic references
During the Fall 2016 semester, the team got together to discuss audiovisual possibilities that would complement the story and setting of the game. A lot of time was spent brainstorming ideas for the graphical layout of the title (see Figure 27), which had to be both practical and stylish, and trawling the Web for reference images that could potentially be used to nail down Streams of Nurture’s aesthetics and user experience.
Once all the pictures that closely matched our presentational vision for the visual novel had been gathered, the team winnowed the pool of references and ended up with artistic works that bore an experimental and/or ethereal style. Most of those pieces of art made use of oil painting, vivid lighting, and intermingling of color and shape to create a radiant image that effectively portrayed natural surroundings and the characters in it. This eventually led to the development of the tribal motif that adorned each of the visual novel’s backdrops and personalities.
Asset list
In order to uphold the audiovisual vision that the team crafted at the beginning of development and ensure that it remained consistent, a comprehensive asset spreadsheet (see Figure 28) was created at the end of the fall semester.
The asset list provided the in-game reference name, actual filename and a brief description for every piece of art created to implement the functional framework. URLs to images containing the intended features of each scene were also included, ensuring that Streams of Nurture would not suffer from incongruous-looking visuals that conflicted with the narrative.
Style transfer
As the label “visual novel” suggests, the artistic aspect of our game was critical, requiring a unique and compelling art style that would hold the attention of players and support the goal of educating them about sustainable aquaculture.
Some of the game’s characters are of Coast Salish descent, and many story situations mention the indigenous fishing practices that maintained their communities throughout generations. For these reasons, respectful incorporation of Coast Salish aesthetics into the “look and feel” of our project seemed both desirable and appropriate. This goal was achieved using a relatively new application of artificial intelligence (AI) known as style transfer.
The possibility of harnessing AI algorithms to apply the aesthetic style of one piece of art onto another was first brought to our attention by Professor Moriarty. We knew of no visual novel that had ever used this technology as the basis for its art direction, and decided to investigate its potential for our project.
Our first task was to identify a style transfer application that met the requirements of Streams of Nurture. Specifically, we needed an app with the following characteristics:
The ability to work with original, customized style reference art;
The ability to work with high-definition image files;
High style-transfer quality, with useful processing options;
Low per-image processing cost (preferably free), with reasonably fast turnaround.
Several style transfer applications were found, but most fell short in one or more of these areas. Many offered their services for free, but severely limited the size of image output, or did not support custom styling images. Others charged a per-image fee, utilized weak algorithms that produced inconsistent or unattractive results, or required a very long time (sometimes over a day!) to stylize each image due to overcrowded servers.
Eventually we discovered Alter, an Android app available on the Google Play store, which met nearly all of our requirements. It supported custom styling images, processed entire images (unfortunately not at full HD resolution), responded quickly, imposed no limit on the number of images processed, and (most importantly) proved capable of producing visually stunning results. Alter was therefore chosen as the centerpiece of our project’s art pipeline.
Using authentic Coast Salish art references, Liam created a single image that was used as the master styling reference for every background and character image used throughout the entire game (see Figure 29). Figure 30 shows the result of this style reference applied to an original photo.
Art process
Once the team had the asset list of images and a method for processing them, it was time to get started on developing character models and gathering images to be used as backgrounds. Primarily, the team needed to get out into the world and collect pictures, as over 200 environmental background images were required. These scenes would feature indoor offices, fishing markets, factories, Native American reservations, and fish farming sites. Liam took advantage of his trips home to Hawaii over the breaks to gather images that could not be taken back on the East Coast. He also traveled from Worcester to New York taking pictures, and undertook a photo-gathering pilgrimage to New England’s archetypal fishing village: Gloucester, MA. After cropping selected photographs and applying style transfer with Alter, a blur was added with Adobe Photoshop to enhance the separation of background images and superimposed characters.
Collecting background images of the processes used in salmon farming and preparation for consumers proved challenging. Many such scenes would be impossible to acquire while attending courses full-time at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. To produce artwork for scenes that could not be photographed ourselves, Liam turned to the collage technique, where he took simple aspects of reference images, cropped, edited and fit them together like a puzzle to create an approximation of the required scene. Applying style transfer and post-processing to these images effectively concealed their Frankenstein-like construction, allowing them to fit seamlessly into the rest of the game (see Figure 35).
Character production
Michel’s character templates supplied descriptions of how he envisioned their physical appearance and social tendencies. This made it relatively easy for Liam to produce character sketches for discussion and mutual approval.
One aspect Liam had to keep in mind while drawing these characters out was that some of them had true-to-life ethnic backgrounds and stories. For those who represented Coast Salish descendants, Liam strived to be both accurate and sensitive to avoid the possibility of offense. For those with impacting backstories, Liam had to capture the look and emotions of how someone in that position might appear (see Figure 36).
Figure 36. Original sketch of Daphne Crosby (left), and prepared for stylizing (right).
Original images by Liam Miller
A more tedious factor involved in creating these characters was the process of displaying them in at least three different positions: left, forward and right-facing. New to producing drawings of characters at multiple angles, Liam struggled to keep the characters looking the same at different positions. Defining a standard character size of 2160 x 800 pixels assisted him with controlling the relative size and height of the models.
Liam’s early experiments with style transfer on both background and characters produced results that made it hard to separate the characters from the backgrounds. Eventually Liam developed a method of “dialing down” the style transfer effect on the characters to preserve the detail on their faces and clothing, keeping them distinct from the background. Specifically, using percentages as strength levels of style transferring, the backgrounds usually ran from 16-23% strength and characters ranged from 11-17%, each depending on detail and depth of what was being portrayed (see Figure 37).
  Sound design
When it came to creating the soundscape and music for Streams of Nurture, the team hoped to suggest the serene, tranquil atmosphere of fishing towns. We also wanted the audio to complement the visuals and narrative on display without overpowering them. To achieve these effects, we sourced and listened to various tracks spanning several genres such as New Age and minimalism.
It wasn’t until the latter half of the spring semester that we managed to find an audio partner in Dave Allen, who was willing to lend his skills to the project. Upon joining the team, Dave was provided with the audiovisual references we sought in 2016 as well as an asset list of sound effects he had to produce for the beginning sections of the visual novel.
Figure 38. Screenshots of audio workstations.
Original images by Dave Allen
Given the scope of the project and the amount of time left in the academic year, Dave had to adopt a modular approach with regards to composing the tracks and sound effects for Streams of Nurture. Using digital mixers and synthesizers (see Figure 38), Dave wrote multiple pieces of original music, using a variety of strategies to capture the relaxed atmosphere of coastal life.
When writing the music and designing the soundscape, Dave found it important that the audio stayed in the background, as the visual novel format is focused more on narrative development than audiovisual spectacle. This led him to create a minimal soundscape based on layers of environmental ambiance, with each cue having its fade-in/fade-out values adjusted to properly reflect the change of locales.
And that's all she wrote (for Part III, at least)! As I mentioned before, more parts will be posted on a weekly basis.
Let me know what you think of my article in the comments section, and feel free to ask me questions! I’ll do my best to get back to you as promptly as possible.
Logan's Costume Changes In Every Phases Of Wolverine Movie (Best to Worst)
Logan hit cinemas now, there has never been a better time to obsess mutant symbol "Wolverine" was that says "bub". In this article, the goal is to focus on the segments. Wolvie, played by Hugh Jackman 99% of the time and Troye Sivan following X-Men Origins opening: Wolverine had his fair share of facts during his long life, big screen, tasteless Natty up. The black leather is how it all started, with the first X-Men fun movie "yellow spandex" a snarky line of dialogue. Years later, the legend came very close to a U-turn this. And, interestingly enough, the trend of super leather suits dropped a good deal over the same period. Each is the favorite Logan of his 17-year career in the theater they seek, and have decided to sort the suit are the signature of each film and some of the other notable ensembles that have appeared only a brief. Here, each costume is rated best Wolverine film getting worse. 1. YELLOW SPANDEX! (The WOLVERINE Scene Deleted)
And finally a little trap: never again see the yellow comic copy on the big screen, because it was in favor of cutting the Wolverine, the last part of the film, rationalize. First Yukio that Logan's suit is on the level before the final credits: Logan opened a suitcase, threw Technicolor clothes and raised an eyebrow at Yukio. The scene can be seen on YouTube. It may not be an officer, then the garrison, but this is something of pure beauty. After all the uniforms, leather jackets and misaligned Western magic, it is a pleasure to see what would stand the position of a purist comic about Wolverine costume in the form of live action. Maybe one day, when Logan's role is a makeover and extravagant costumes have become acceptable as a miracle, we see Wolverine with all his yellow glory on the big screen. James Mangold is not really interested in it, so if it ever happens, it will not be for a while. However, this fact is not used - with all its beautiful textures and precise comic colors - it is the best you will get.
2. Look worn Jacket (X-MEN)
As much as the original leather uniform was great, he gave us not to say as a sign about Logan as Professor X, who gave him too late X-Men. No doubt used before the Hugh Jackman costume which, when introduced correctly after the topless fighting cage, is more important. The first appearance of the film Wolverine consisted of a brown leather jacket, denim jacket, an old brown shirt and black shirt. It also has an old West-esque belt and worn jeans. (It's no different than your Logan cowboy costume actually.) It's a well maintained and outdated whole, suggesting that Logan is a man who does not care much about his appearance, and gently hinting that it was more than expected. When Logan first encounters Vampira, with her in the bar among puffs on his cigar grunts, you immediately get a sense of who that person is. It could be great fight, but you have nothing to fight. Not important enough. The clothes he wears help give that impression. The first action was of great importance Wolverine - I set the tone for the character, his cinematic journey of 17 years always started on the right foot - and is also one of the best.
3. UNIFORM LEATHER FIRST (X-MEN)
Bryan Singer's first 2000 Wolverine X-Men divisor uniform, is certainly still the best they've come with. Along with the cast of the Jackman role, Wolverine redefined for a film group. The animal was short and yellowish rage comics gone, and instead an Australian actor was 6'2 '' a mysterious amnesiac with claws and a leather suit suit. The idea was to tie the yellow jacket inspired to do enough to show that the filmmakers and designers were not playing thoroughly the comic canon. Two on the neck, one on each handle and the belt buckle: Hammered was this respect for the home material of no less than five X symbols. In addition, shoulder and arm padding in this first uniform is more like that of a motorcycle jacket, the useless-to-the-love-of-it texturing that came after. This is the costume that made the movie buffs Wolverine serious, and made sure that the comic book fans were kept happy. A master clock, actually. 4. All Black ALL (THE WOLVERINE)
Nothing says "this is waste cooler and less than the last Wolverine movie 'enough to make its protagonist in a black suit plonking everyone.What is surprising is how well it works because it sounds so extravagant as old socks On paper, as a deliberate attempt to make the film look grumpy and grown up. The reality of Hugh Jackman all in black, Wolverine Sport slightly flattened hair, claws stained with blood, is really unbelievably cool. He catered very well to the idea of Logan as a samurai and separates the effect of heavy leather vest / vest glasses we had seen before. Logan's views on a suit and tie should be shocking, but in fact it's one of the less grating elements of The Wolverine. It is certainly a better idea of the villain to give a shiny mech silver suit. This elegant selection is ideal for Japanese expedition Logan's suit, and his funeral reflected the dark morbid (though ultimately uncooked) morbid themes about Logan's desire to die and the death that follows.
5. Future Game (X-Men: Days of Future PAST)
The Board decided to pay the leather X-Men: Days of Future Past, designed a really amazing Wolverine costume run. Instead of the elegance of the old uniforms, Jackman has a promise of more tactical appearance that seems to be a bit more bulletproof than elegant. It has metal parts, and padding protection. It looks ready for battle. It also has blue and yellow manga, provides a return to the cartoon and cartoon series. Longtime character fans have a kick out of this design decision, and creates a brighter than the previous films of the X-Men, without compromising the integrity of Wolverine sand suit compromise. Unfortunately, it was not much with the future version of Wolverine. He was sent back to the past and then accused of lying to the rest of the film. But even this action is a great mix of cinema, realism and color comics. 6. SECOND LEATHER UNIFORM (X2: X-Men United)
What a difference a belt buckle makes. In many ways - the black color, textured shoulder pads, yellow lining - this is the same suit he wore Hugh Jackman X-Men: The Last Stand. But the X2: X-Men United version somehow manages to be much better. The differences are minimal, but they make a big difference. A yellow X badge on the belt buckle adds a bit more fun and a bit of respect to the comic show, and it looks like it could be different shades that are used in black leather sections. The X through Pecs Jackman certainly seems to be a bit more than he did in the next movie. The yellow lining also goes a little farther, shoulders, arms and abdomen accentuate more than the latest version of the brace. X2 is undoubtedly the best film X-Men Wolverine Magistrale in terms of material and has a strong fit equipment.
7. snazzy shirt and jacket 70S (X-Men: Days of Future PAST)
A suit does not always have a deep and meaningful history to win our hearts. Sometimes, just look as cool as hell. This is the ambience that 1970's Wolverine costume shines on in X-Men: Days of Future Past. It's really just a generic suit period, but Ronin's evil takes it so well. After all these years in black Hugh Jackman watch uniforms, waistcoats and leather jackets, it was a shock to the system to see something as colorful and playful as this. The funk standard shirt, collar collar, humungous belt and funky buckle is a striking phrase. If you with some of the finest hairstyles of the franchise and clutches of Pre-Stryker bone match everything, you have a really impressive look. In this film, change in the past have focused on, changing Jackman in the past was a real highlight.
8. SANS COWBOY (Logan)
For reasons that do not leave spoiler reasons to protect Western films - especially film Shane George Stevens 1953 - play a major role in Logan. Wolverine, of course, he always had the air of a lonely old western gunslinger in him, and Logan makes some interesting ones about this idea of building moves. One way to do this is, Logan dressing up with the outfit - a black T-shirt under a royal blue shirt under a brown jacket, literally score on a cowboy display. It does not choose to resign, but if you ever choose Logan this equipment, it can be read as growing as a sign. In addition to his dull workwear, Logan decides to dress up as a cowboy conscious. Unwritten words, but the implication is that he is willing to embrace a heroic identity. There can not be an X-Man, but you can still do good in the world. They may not be the most prominent Logan topics, but what makes this set represent important.
9. WOLVERINE Weapon X (X-Men: Apocalypse)
Except for the X-Men: First Class Cameo Bar and footage of Hugh Jackman's face in Deadpool, this scene in X-Men: Apocalypse, the shortest time Wolverine spent on screen in a X-movie. Was imitating the sketch created by this brief carnage. The city, with red eyes, the filmmaker must be intriguing looked but experimental comic readers recognized as an allusion to comic book Weapon X written in 1991 and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith. It is a simplified version of the suit as drawn - Comics to contain an integral head helmet with a Cyclops-like eye window - but the number was evident. In terms of practicality, it is discussed just one step up from the jeans-on-a-suit vest. You have to worry about the poor Wolvie when it works in the snow will use only a few cuts, a harness and a technical device. But still, it looks good. And that's the main thing, is not it?
10. GENERIC WORKWEAR (Logan)
It's something to see incredibly sad, Logan dressed in a poorly washed shirt and an ill fitting jacket, his hair and beard scruffy. It's like seeing an old friend at work unchanged and scruffy stumbled, the morning after a Christmas party at the office, which got out of hand. Except, of course, Logan is the whole society that has gone a little wrong. Here is the iconic hero Hugh Jackman is in a constant state of hangover line work even more difficult could not be created. There are only mutants, the X-Men have cartoon characters, and the most powerful heroes on Earth had come down to get a normal job. Working for Uber post-apocalyptic is a depressing life in Logan's big screen chapter, and this is the carefree and glamorous suit you fit. It may not be cool, but it's perfect for the opening of the latest Wolverine look grim movie. 11. UNIFORM LEATHER THIRD (X-Men: The Final Clash)
Best official uniforms Wolverine this is the especially gentle number of X-Men:. The Last Stand It is painfully simple, looking almost identical to all others with its black color and unnecessary textures around its shoulders. Beast, short lines and a proper X sleeves emblem have the only decent uniform on the film. The rest of the team gets the same standard edition of the gummy garbage, with the least hint of color for some of the seams. Wolvie had a yellow chest X, for example, but it's subtly that can only be seen in the finished film. Undoubtedly, this is the point when Leathersuits feel fresh stopped. Could have something a little more colorful things lively but fans had to wait until X-Men: First Class to. However, it is a fine line between the precision of modern comics and stepping acceptance. Purple Horror Psylocke X-Men: Apocalypse definitely proved that it can go too far towards the comics as The Last Stand showed that the source material can ignore for a long time to be annoying.
12. The view of LUMBERJACKMAN (X-Men Origins: Wolverine)
He is a woodcutter and well, his wife was not killed by mistake today. Undoubtedly the best Wolverine worst film costume (as the rest of his X-Men leather jacket never looked good), this tree-block set says a lot about the state of Logan's psyche at this point in the movie. For the first time Logan is at peace when in the woods. He works hard for a peaceful, working trees instead of cutting people for a change. It is in the garden of nature and really has a purpose in bleeding. Good for him. The plaid flannel shirt may mean a bit about the shape of the nose that since they were pictures of Logan felled trees enough would take away the view. However, it has grown to look great and significant than a vest, jeans or dress. Another easy for cosplayers, too.
13. COWBOYS and a jacket (other films)
One step up a half-suit team is another incredibly common look for Logan: Combined Jeans and Vest that if counted the minutes of the entire franchise, there may be more than the current X-Men uniforms are worn. A hand for lazy people, it is also very easy for fancy parties to recreate. That's exactly why this fact with the character has become synonymous with a bit of mystery. Maybe it's because it presents the hero Hugh Jackman as a humble man who likes beer among the superpowers to sit spectacular on a plateau with a few cans. Or maybe it's because it's cheap to repeatedly play for the costume department with additional blood splashes and bullet holes per movie. Curiosity: X-Men: The Last Stand, seems to have its own Wolvie vest of renewable energy. They were called peaks in the forest for life, ripping holes in their beloved huge piece of sleeveless clothing, but in the next scene, the holes disappeared. Or Logan has super powers or carries a spare. 14. Only minimal equipment (other films)
It would be at least a free topless scene Hugh Jackman a Wolverine movie without. Pants, but nothing about what is the most common form of filmmakers in his X-Film without shirt shirtless goat, but you could forget the time that the whole pig was and had a completely naked Logan lake alkaline leak and jump into a waterfall In X- Men Origins: Wolverine?
