I spent way too much time on this but here we go! (am willing to do other idols as well)

K has such a strong personality. To me its a beautiful thing. I think he is passionate, kind, hard working, and exudes natural confidence that I find very magnetic. However, I can see how some people may misunderstand that. So, in response to some “fans” who seem to not understand this beautiful creature for all his complexity and nuances, and armed with the information available on his profile, have researched and put together a breakdown of the facets of his personality.

(disclaimer, I cannot pretend to know K on a personal level. I used parts of articles and descriptions that I thought best described his interactions within ILAND and that could be supported by i-cam footage or clips from the actual show.)

Zodiac: Ox (1997)

Much like the image of an Ox, people born in this year tend to be persistent, honest, and straightforward. They are “talent leaders with strong faith, and strong devotion to work. This is most likely where K gets the image of being arrogant or stubborn. While this might be the undercurrent, I think the other facets of his personality are more often highlighted. Mind you Jungkook, Jaehyun, Cha Eunwoo, Mingyu, and Yugyeom are all Ox’s as well. These people hardly strike me as arrogant now, though I can see their stubborness and devotion (all positive ways).

Blood Type: A

K, according to his profile, is blood type A which is often described as sensitive, passionate, clever, loyal, calm, consistent, and perfectionist. However type A’s can also be stubborn and overly sensitive. Generally, type A’s are stoic, majestic and confident, three qualities that can often be misinterpreted as intimidating or rude when in actuality they are very sensitive and caring as well.

Also, ENFP’s are very creative, independent people who struggle to work within rigid structures and hierarchies. They hate being micromanaged and would prefer to have the time and space to do the work. Too much micromanagement can cause stress in an ENFP which often leads them to neglect their personal health and happiness. They tend to give more than others are able to reciprocate.

But above all, ENFPs are kind. They “are very emotional and sensitive, and when they step on someones toes, they both feel it.” (16 personalities). They love open communication and want to listen as well. They really believe that everyone should take the time to recognize and express their emotions.

Age Hierarchy in Japan vs Korea:

(I am not Korean or Japanese so I looked up scholarly articles to help me with this section. But, for context, I have been to both countries)

In broad terms, Korea and Japan both have a system of age hierarchy that stems from Confucianism. The general idea is that older people, or people in positions of power, are to be highly respected by the younger generation or my subordinates. However, Japan and Korea have different interpretations of this ideal.

The Japanese version is focused on “Senpai-Kohai” (student teacher) relationship. This is expressed in many contexts even outside of school. The idea is that the older generation is responsible for teaching the younger generation manners and skills. The Younger generation is expected to listen and learn all the lessons of their teacher or mentor. These roles aren’t always associated with age however. In fact, in recent years, the younger generations, especially in work places, have somewhat turned their backs on the idea that an older colleague is deserving of more honor simply because of their age. In some instances, Kohais will fake their respect for their senpais. Many companies have been forced to abandon this ideal all together, promoting and giving raises to workers who are more skilled rather than workers who are older, thus abandoning age in their hierarchy of honor.

The korean language is organized around the idea of informal and formal speech in reference to someones age. Older people must be spoken to with formal speech unless they give express permission otherwise. This is also enforced by military culture and the concepts of hoobae (subordinate) and sunbae (older/more experienced person). These roles have specific social expectations attached to them and carry significant weight.

K is physically intimidating, no denying that. He’s tall, athletically built, outwardly confident, and mature. He shows his emotions plainly on his face and takes up a lot of space with his body and energy. His presence is felt regardless of where he is in a room.

We are all humans who must grow and learn as we develop and we can only hope that grace is granted to us as well. So give K grace as he learns to adapt to his surrounding, just as we gave grace to Heeseung, Jay, Niki, and all the others.

Regardless, I will gladly answer as best I can. I cant promise it was be half as lovingly put together as her response about Louis, because that was truly so sweet, and genuine, and heartfelt. But I can try.

It feels so hard sometimes to put into words how Zouis make me feel because it’s very much an emotional drive when you love a pair so much. So it’s no surprise to anyone who’s tried to explain feelings into words, that its difficult. I need to preface by saying I love all the boys, obviously. And I find all their relationships amongst each other to be so important in their own ways. All are valued to me, and I love them all. I guess the only thing that stands out to me most with Zouis, is that at some point between just being a 1D fan with a Zayn preference, to noticing his connection with Louis, my realization had only grown to become more obvious to me that they really did have a natural chemistry.

I’m not sure I’m just projecting, or if the observation is clear to most, but once I saw how Zayn’s mood would just light up and turn around when his focus was on Louis, that really was what got me hooked on them. I just feel like I repeat myself a lot when I talk about Zouis, so pardon if you’ve heard all this before. I never tend to shut up about them, its a problem. But, take any interview the boys have done, where Zayn and Louis are relatively in close proximity to each other—which is often—and just observe Zayn. Observe how he answers his questions, where he looks at when he answers them, and how he passes his silence in interviews. Sometimes, yes, he looks around, half-hearted and not focused on anyone in particular. But most times, he is paying attention to Louis. If he’s answering an interviewer’s question, he likes to respond, not to the interviewer, but directing it to one of the boys, most often Louis. If I had to reason why, I think it’s just a reassurance thing. It feels less daunting to answer when he can say it like he’s speaking to Louis.

But aside from me initially realizing Zayn’s comfort in Louis, it was a world unlocked when I took notice of Louis, and how much life he had in his eyes. The really surprising thing about Zouis, is that you almost don’t expect them to be friends. You would never see those two together in any situation outside of the band and think, “wow, they look like they’d be best friends.” But, as we’ve all been taught—’don’t judge a book by its cover’. Louis and Zayn seemed to be drawn more by their personalities. They come from the same humble beginnings, they understand the value of family, their approach to life is a simple, laid-back approach, where they live in the moment and don’t worry too much about the past or the future; those times will come when they’re meant to. They’re both proud of where they came from, and proud of how humble they are. They want to do more than just be a celebrity, and show that in philanthropic ways. They still hold on to a sense of their youth, and embrace fond memories of their past. They even wanted to pursue being teachers, if One Direction had never come to. They wanted to be in a positon in life, where they were helping others. And that really shows how multi-faceted they both are, despite people not assuming anything beyond their exterior.

Even their differences compliment one another. Yes, Zayn likes his R&B, and Louis likes his rock. But, like any of us, we take observations and adaptations from out friends. Zayn may dabble in some more guitar-driven sounds now, like he wrote with Dragonfly; or embrace the rock & roll look, as much as Louis praises Biggie and loves listening to a bit of that gangster rap. A shared appreciation for a style of music that’s not the other’s first choice shows they can adapt. Zayn loves his leather jackets, Louis likes a tracksuit. But they both look handsome, don’t they? Louis likes an exciting night out every now and then, and Zayn is perfectly content with a calm night in. But wouldn’t you know, every once in a while, you saw Zayn going out with Louis, embracing that moment and taking it in strides. And when the mood called for a calm night in with deep conversations, Louis was just as attentive to be in the moment with Zayn, discussing any and everything they trusted the other to understand, without judgement.

And even while Louis was loud, and Zayn was reserved, I did always feel they meshed well amongst all that. They have bits of the other in themselves. Zayn’s not always a demure little woodland creature. His personality is just misunderstood sometimes. But Louis knew that, Louis could see there was a little part of Zayn that can be outgoing, and playful, and sarcastic, and lively. And I would say he was determined to pull that out of Zayn, so everyone could see as wonderful a personality Zayn really could give off as Louis saw in him. And equally so, Zayn had a calmness to him that could settle Louis. We know Louis is so much more than a loud, troublemaking goofball with no regard for structure and authority. We all love when Louis can be playful, but even the wildest boy needs a moment to relax and unwind. To be seen as more than just a spectacle; And really, Louis has much more depth to him that he’s given credit for. And that side of Louis was clear to Zayn, who knew the love and care Louis held for the most precious people and things near and dear to his heart. And knowing the depth of each other, it was easy to imagine how much they treasured the talks they had and the depths they took their discussions. To be able to both let their walls down entirely, that they had full trust in the other? That takes a lot of trust and a lot of faith. Sometimes, Zayn just needed to get outside of his head, and sometimes Louis needed to be brought back down to Earth.

So, I’m kinda getting away with this post. I just meant to explain that i think they connect intellectually more than anything. Funnily enough, they have been so in sync with each other for all these years, that they mimic their action, words, and even clothes similarly to the other. Do they intentionally do it? I’m not sure. Is it a purely coincidental byproduct of how close they grew into each other lives, that they adopt the others mannerisms? Sure! But that also shows how natural Zayn and Louis’ relationship formed for them. I never felt like there was a forced nature to Zouis. They hung out because they wanted to, they were affectionate and complementing because that how they genuinely felt, and there was no tension because there was trust. There’s a balance in Zouis that keeps them in sync and able to read a situation, so they never take things too far with the other. They have an ebb and a flow to them, a balance. And in addition to being incredibly connected thoughtfully, they’re also very playful and fun. They know the importance of embracing each day, and have no regret taking full advantage of that, especially when they know they have a confidant in the other, someone willing to take the bullet for you and stick alongside with you.

Anywho, I’m sure there’s more I could have said, or less I could have said. But It’s hard to encompass all of what makes Zouis so special to me. Because it’s not just the technicality of how they operate in their actions, its how they feel and act and are personality-wise with the other. I wholeheartedly believe that, although they’ve grown as individuals since parting ways, there still feels a feeling of incompletion to them, and up until recently, when they met up, I did always feel it was because nothing can quite fill the void of someone you grew and entangled your roots into. But, there’s always hope for the future, and having as natural a connection as they’ve had from the start, I have no worry in Zouis. I like to say they’re soulmates, but regardless of how I feel, I’m sure they’re meant to be in each others lives for the long haul. You don’t find someone you connect with so well all the time. So, when you find a relationship like the one Zayn and Louis have, it’s unique, and special, and so meaningful. I’m sure we could go on, and on, and on with this, but I will wrap it up here. Zouis are such a wonderfully simple relationship; but DONT underestimate a simple relationship as being less powerful or important, cause that’s definitely not the case. Sometimes simplicity of that love is the key. Thank you for the ask!

The Dis-empowerment of Beverly Marsh

TW: Discussions of rape, sexual assault, discussions of child abuse I am a horror writer, a horror reader, a horror watcher, and a rape survivor. Trying to balance these isn’t easy. Anyone who’s spent five minutes around the horror genre knows rape is a go-to plot element. To engage with the work I love I’ve learned to wait for reviews from others, often my friends or partner. I watch trailers or read synopsis. I’ve learned the signs, the common beats, and I can usually pick them up from a trailer, or five minutes into the movie. Being raped didn’t destroy my love of horror, so I had to learn to adapt, and I’ve gotten to the point where I am almost never surprised. It was learn that or struggle every day with being triggered, so I learned. ‘It’, a movie based off the book by Stephen King, took me by surprise. King has never shied away from rape in his books, and Gerald’s Game, soon to also be released as a movie, deals almost entirely with rape trauma and the effect it can have on your life. ‘Library Policeman’, a novella, is similar, though with a supernatural bent, and ‘The Stand’ has several heart rending scenes of abuse and survival.

The difference in this case is that the book version of ‘It’ features no sexual assault. What it has instead it a low level radiation of toxic masculinity that permeates all of Beverly Marsh’s life. Her father views her as property, and often accuses her of ‘letting the boys touch (her)’. The last scene with him features an attempt to beat her to death based on this belief, only somewhat influenced by the influence of the clown Pennywise. His interest in her is emotionally incestuous, there is no doubt, as he seems to see women as interchangeable, but his abuse is emotional and physical. The unsettling sexual undertone comes from a father believing his daughter, even at 10, is both a sexual being, and someone he has the right to have sexual control over.

In a culture where ‘Rules For Dating My Daughter’ can be found in every corner of Facebook and Father’s Day merchandise involves shirts like the one below, the story of Beverly Marsh is incredibly important.

The book is a very different portrayal of childhood sexualisation then what we usually see. It is the ‘I have a shotgun!’ speech taken to it’s natural conclusion (”I have a daughter, but I also have a gun, a shovel, and a backyard”), and it is horrifying. If you believe you own your child’s sexual experience, you sexualize them from the moment you begin to believe that. They are not a child to you; they are an object to control, someone who’s decisions about their own body will never be right unless you are involved. That means you must be involved, even before they are sexual beings, to make sure they do not make mistakes. In ‘It’, this leads a preteen to being shamed and almost killed over something she has not even begun to understand. This is one of the (many) reasons the new ‘It’ is deeply disappointing to me. Beverly lives with her single father, and her mother is never mentioned, playing into the stereotype of men ‘needing’ sex and seeking it from their children if they don’t have a partner or aren’t ‘getting enough’ from said partner, a false and harmful idea. The sexual abuse is discussed immediately after we see her interact with her father for the first time. All of the choices she makes in this movie regarding her body related to the abuse. Abuse survivors will often change themselves physically in some way, either as a way to reclaim their bodies, or, as in the movie, to make themselves unappealing to their abusers. However, this was not in the book. The nuance and subtlety is violently thrown out the window in favor of a straightforward sort of sexual abuse. Now the original story wasn't perfect, of course, not even close; but at the end of the day what I saw was one my favorite books and most beloved plot lines become something I did not recognize. Both the book and the movie follow a group of seven children, known around town as outcasts and losers, fighting a force that came from beyond our time and space. As they learn more about the creature that calls itself Pennywise they also discover that they are more than how others see them. The Losers, as they call themselves, spend one terrible summer discovering the unimaginable might of childhood belief and the evil that plagues their town. Unlike the book, the movie chooses to make Beverly a victim, and she is never allowed to leave that role. She is always ‘the girl’ to them; unlike the book ,there is never a single moment of camaraderie where all of the Loser’s are equals. Much like how Mike, the only black Loser, is diminished to a token, Beverly loses any elements of herself that are not connected to her ‘femininity’. She is struggling exclusively with her upcoming menstruation, her father’s abuse and control, the rumors of promiscuity that plague her in everyday life. This movie does not allow her to be the best shot in the losers, or a horror fan in her own right, or a friend, or a multi-faceted character struggling to survive in a world that doesn’t care about her. She is a love interest, and a sexual object for the other Loser’s, with the notable exception of Mike which leads to an yet another unfortunate racist undertone. The ultimate betrayal of Beverly, however, comes from an element unlike anything in the story that inspired it. In the third act the Loser’s begin to fight among themselves, and ultimately disband. After her father’s attack, where she is allowed to save herself, she is kidnapped by Pennywise to tempt the other Loser’s to the sewer for the final battle. She is not with them. The only reason the Loser’s get back together is to save ‘the girl’. She is the damsel for whom the men will forget their arguments. If they had to go with the kidnapping idea, Mike, who had the least amount of time with the group, or Richie, notorious loudmouth and impetus for the dissolution of the Losers, being the victim could have made the finale fascinating. Driven not by a strange chivalry or romantic interest, but by friendship and loyalty, it would have changed the tone of the movie almost entirely. As it is, the story ends not with seven Losers holding hands in a circle, equal and devoted to one another, promising to save a town that doesn’t care about them with a blood oath. It ends with Beverly kissing Bill, an uncomfortably long shot that shows us that once again Beverly is not allowed to be a person, that in this world she will always only be the girl.

Natsume’s Book of Friends Season 6 - Anime Review

Natsume’s Book of Friends Season Six (Natsume Yūjinchō Roku) was the anime that I was looking most forward to watching! I have been a huge fan of the series since it first aired back in July 2008. I decided to watch it on a whim and it has been one of my all-time favourite feel-good serials since then. The anime is an adaptation of the manga written by Yuki Midorikawa, which was published by Hakusensha (Viz Media for English speakers).

Natsume’s Book of Friends follows a young boy, Takeshi Natsume, who is an orphan child that sees yōkai, or Japanese spirits. Because of this unique trait, people treat him like he’s a mad child and no one wants him. We watch him in his adolescent years as he struggles with accepting who is and finding a balance with his normal, everyday life of being a kid as well as being someone special who can help beings that have no other means of getting said help. Season six is a continuation of the story!

In my First Impressions post for this show, I had mentioned that I initially believed the season would focus on motifs of Natsume growing up with unique capabilities and what life was like for him during these difficult times. It turns out that I wasn’t too far off on my hypothesis! Woot. Very much like the previous season, this new addition has been quite reflective in regards to Natsume’s past, mostly in relation to the obstacles that he faced as a child. We get to experience more concrete glimpses into the core facets via contemplative thoughts that our protagonist has about the person he used to be and the person that he’s become. This breathtakingly puts into perspective the character growth that he’s undergone over the span of the past 72-episodes.

Every single aspect about Natsume’s Book of Friends is a stunning masterpiece and a subtle ode to Japanese culture and spiritual beliefs. It’s presented in glorious animation, infused with the aesthetics of tradition and history. From the mannerisms and etiquette, to the way that everyone interacts with another-supernatural or otherwise-to the common dilemmas involving dysfunctional and complicated familial bonds, friendships steeped in misunderstanding, and the simple emotions of loneliness that’s blossomed from a deep loss–all of these come together in a marvellous, fluid way to create a story that’s highly engaging and compassionate.

Visually, the anime is just as lovely, if not more, as its predecessors. The natural surroundings of the forests, neighbourhoods, and mountainous regions are depicted with great detail while retaining an air of ordinary beauty. The characters are all natural and easy to differentiate from one to the next. Whenever it calls for it, the suspense, laced with ethereal affects, conjures just the right amount of tension without feeling heavy, forced, or insufficient.

The soundtrack continues to be wholeheartedly magical with melodies composed of piano, shamisen, and wood instruments that work together to instil warm-hearted emotions and empathetic responses. It’s tasteful, sophisticated, and so easy to listen to, making it the absolute perfect accompaniment to the classic aura of Japanese culture.

Regardless of all of these things to love and appreciate, the best parts of the season were the themes of friendship and family, the bonds that tie people together, which is inherent in every new instalment to the serial. It’s a show that really peels away all of the layers that make humans such complex creatures and reveals us for the simpletons that we are: individuals who fight our own realm of loneliness; people who just want to love and be loved and accepted, whether it’s romantic, familial, etc.

In conclusion, Natsume’s Book of Friends was one of the best shows out there for the Spring 2017 Anime line-up, and it will always be a masterpiece for me. It’s the kind of genuine feel-good series to pick up when you need it the most. I highly recommend this to all fans of anime, especially if you’re new to the medium. It can be enjoyed by anyone who loves a beautiful story.
