if you like crafting and also free things, might i suggest the antique pattern library?
it’s a not for profit that’s gathering books, patterns, and other materials related to crafting that are out of copyright (or getting permission from copyright holders in some cases) in order to share them online. they scan items, clean them up, then make everything available for free!
free things are great, especially when you’re just starting to get into something. like oh, i’m supposed to spend money on this hobby i just picked up 20 minutes ago???
the first time i ended up on the site, i seriously spent hours just trawling through everything. there’s the usual suspects like knitting, crochet, embroidery, but there’s also woodwork, calligraphy, and books on things like how to mount and frame pictures. with cross stitch patterns, they also make modern charts with the dmc colour codes available.

I found this absolutely gorgeous filet crochet pattern on the Antique Pattern Library! (And there’s a charted version on The Internet Archive)
It’s from Édouard Boucherit’s Grand Album de Modèles pour Filet No. 9
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at it! It’s so pretty!
But it’s 151 stitches by 87 stitches, so I need to be absolutely sure that I know what I’m doing before I start it, lol. It would be terrible to get halfway through and realize that my stitch height or something is off and warping the picture.
(For reference, one of my previous projects was 36 stitches by 26 stitches. That’s 936 stitches total. It took me about 6 ish hours to complete, and is 35cm wide.
This pattern, 151x87, is 13,137 total stitches. That’s fourteen times bigger than my previous project. If we assume that it’ll take me the same amount of time per stitch (I hope not. I hope I get at least a bit faster with practice) it will take me 84 hours to finish.
Also, assuming stitches are the same size as in my previous project, the finished dimensions will be about 85cm by 147 cm (or about 2 foot 9 by 4 foot 10)
So yea. Big project. But it’s SO PRETTY.

Patterns for Corticelli Yarn, 1922
Once commercial yarn was invented and women were not spinning it themselves, yarn producers realized it made a lot of sense to feed the hunger for new patterns. You see here a page taken from a free publication which you will find at the Antique Pattern Library online.
Because of black and white movies, and the modern tendency for movie directors to make everyone wear sepia tones in historical stories, we often forget that the people of the past lived with just as much color as well do. You see here 1920s sweaters with some very playful coloring especially the lower right-hand picture. But all of them have some color play if only tipping. Notice that the waists are not well marked, and belts tended to fall lower and looser. This is in keeping with the tube silhouette which became so popular during the 1920s and made women try to flatten out all of their curves. Dropped collars were also popular in the 1910s and in the early 1920s.

daily notes - April 10-11, 2024
Within the next month, I shall be making a drawstring pouch for someone's birthday, and I plan to embroider something on it. Tonight, I dug through a few stashes of fabric. Found a good fabric for the lining, but the outer fabric was more elusive. Perhaps it was where I was digging; easy-to-access places, aka not where the "good" stuff lives.
I wanted to stitch one of the designs from the Talismans pack from Urban Threads, then quilt the design to make it 3D. But I know going that route would require more brain-power than I can afford at the moment.
Instead, I'm going to cross stitch the person's initial as a monogram and do some blackwork designs to fill in the background. It won't be as fancy, but it'll be "my speed". And the more something is "my speed", the more likely I'll get it done in time.
These were the two monograms I liked, from the Antique Pattern Library: blue letters and black letters (search "C-SW004" on the page.

Going that route, I know exactly what fabric to use for that. Gotta iron it, but it's tucked in the folder where I stash my embroidery patterns. How convenient!

I was searching through the Antique Pattern Library and came across this embroidery pattern of a beast that seems to be a dolphin with three tail fins and an elephant’s head in Design Elements of Renaissance Embroidery

A transformation, of sorts.
I strongly recommend using the original (black and white on the left) if you’ve never done filet crochet. It’s a very easy pattern, you just have to make sure you keep track of the direction when you turn the piece, or work it in the round.
The pattern on the right is my modified version with a more open ground netting, more organic lines, and 500% more fuckery. Why, you ask? A, because I think it looks better, and B, because I would lose my fucking mind doing that many teeny tiny squares ad nauseum.

Sea serpent panel complete! - Nov 23, 2022
It’s almost 1am, and I’ve finished stitching my sea serpent. I started it back in 2020, stitching for about 10 hours up to the point I dropped it (Aug 1, 2020). Did about 5 hours of work today, and I’ve put in an hour or 2 before today. Shall I round it up to 16-17 hours of work?
Pattern is from the Antique Pattern Library, “D.M.C. Alphabet de la Brodeuse”, published in 1890. It’s the 2nd title on their cross stitch page, 3rd file listed: “DMCAlpha3″, page 7 of the pdf.
And now I’ve realized I left off the bottom of the trident. Goddamnit.
So here’s the other stupid thing: this is only the front side of the pillow I wanted to stitch. Now my options are 1) stitch the back panel’s text as planned, or 2) use a patterned fabric for the back. Considering this was to be personalized for someone... I still really wanna stitch the text.
(I can’t remember if I talked to the intended recipient about it or not. I mean, it’s been 2 years since I started it. Of course I’m gonna forget.)
It feels like the empty space around the serpent’s tail needs something. Bubbles? Waves? I already plan to outline the trident, as the gray I chose blends close to the dark green. I’ll also outline the “blank” squares and the outer edge of the whole design. Just a little sheen to highlight the edges. If it looks good enough, I might outline the mane, too.
