i watched astro boyd last night and almost cried so here are some moments that made me unnecessarily sentimental

“try being a kid for once, huebot” and then huey bonding with boyd immediately after? like okay you can compare me to a robot but ill just go find a robot best friend thanks. crying

“that doesnt make us robots, we’re just kids!”

“get this dangerous machine out of my lab!” referring to boyd when he literally did nothing wrong and is only dangerous because hes malfunctioning which is also kind of your fault, gearloose

”stop trying to make boyd something hes not!” tore me UP cuz thats so true!!! he was never made with the intention of being dangerous, he was supposed to be a normal boy, hes only dangerous when he malfunctions or when his settings and overridden, otherwise hes just a kid that really, really just wants to be treated like one

I'm not here to fearmonger or anything regarding the news about the site, but also everyone should come play on NeopetsClassic. It's like regular Neopets but the site is fanmade and the layout looks like the original from way back in the 2000s (which I, totally unbiasedly, think is an improvement from the current day layout).

It's still incomplete, due to them having to rebuild most of it from scratch, but it's still got a lot of fun stuff to do and also it's a great way to spend your free time. Plus they DO make pretty consistent updates on the regular and there's just a lot of love and care put into it!

I can't believe I actually finished a comic after years of wanting to do one (not for any specific content, just in general). 1/3 of me is wincing at the stilted ass dialogue, 1/3 is nervously waiting for reviews to roll in, and 1/3 is celebrating a pure unadulterated victory. unbelievable. kids, with a deadline, you can do anything.

astroboyd is the best ducktales episode literally ever. boyd gets a featured role, gyro gets a backstory, huey gets to be the main character For Once, its amazing. my roommate and i watch it over and over and over again, i think we've watched it a dozen times by now?? (keep in mind, we watched ducktales in january). it is one of the few ducktales episodes with a special title card, and it has very very good autism representation which is always a plus. also!! huey gets to stim!! it introduces some of the best one-off characters, like dr. akita and inspector tezuka, who both seem like very developed characters despite maybe getting a collective seven minutes of screen time. AND!! the animation!! during the battle scene at the end, they stylize the animation to reflect anime fight scenes, and i genuinely cannot think of another moment in ducktales where they do that. it's its own little self-contained story inside of ducktales and i absolutely adore it. i'll leave you with one more piece of propaganda (that i honestly should've started with, it's enough to convince you on its own):

what’s your opinion on DT17 Gyro? /gen

Ohhh boy let me try to find a way to coherently word everything.

So like. On his own DT17 Gyro is fine. Not amazing, but not the worst character in DT17. But as a Gyro, he’s incredibly. Not great? Like he feels like such a separation from every other iteration of Gyro to the point where if it weren’t for the hat I wouldn’t believe that they were supposed to be the same character (but even then the hat is missing the iconic strappppp). Even taking into account Barks Gyro, who is by far the most….. abrasive, DT17 Gyro still seems like a huge separation? Like whenever I see him on screen I just think “Oh, it’s Jim Rash!” instead of “Oh, it’s Gyro!”.

This is definitely not helped by the fact that Frank seems to think that a character arc is point a to point b (Aka never seeing gyro again after AstroBOYD). Like it would have been genuinely interesting to see how DT17 Gyro grows as a character from finally confronting his source of trauma, but we just. Never see him after that. (Look me dead in the eyes and tell me that you count Beaks In The Shell and his like one line from the finale. Even then in BITS he’s still. Incredibly abrasive. Like if you told me it took place BEFORE AstroBOYD then I wouldn’t notice)

Also the fact that he gets SHAFTED OUT OF THE FAMILY GRRR HATE THAT HATE HATE MAULING FRANK AS WE SPEAK. It’s like. Hhhhhh. In Glomtales having Beaks fight LP instead of Gyro while making a quip about it felt like the point of no return for me. Like in older canons he got invited to some family lunches and called grandma duck “grandma”, it was so heartwarming and yet. They just left it. Cant believe that Gyro got replaced with Fenton.

SPEAKING OF FENTON

DT17 FENTON JUST. ABSORBED ALL OF GYROS GOOD TRAITS WHILE NOT REALIZING WHY THEY WERE GOOD TRAITS??????? Like now he’s just the “default science man hurrrrr durrrr I know chemistry and am smartttttt” seeing Fentons past ancestor in the Klondike episode remake the gizmoduck suit made me consider manslaughter.

What also doesn’t help Fenton absorbing Gyros role is also just. My stance on reboot Fenton? I have a whole ass rant on why DT17 Fenton is my most hated duckverse character but that’s for another day. (I am. Definitely going to make enemies with this post lmao)

Anyways back to Gyro this post is about Gyro. If I had never seen any other duck media and only watched the reboot? Yeah, I feel like I would like DT17 Gyro. Growing up with the DT87 and knowing about other duck media other than the reboot? It just makes me sad that the cultural consensus on my blorbo is now just “asshole abusive boss”

Anyway this is a poll where every participant is just Boyd Drake in all his Definitely Real glory, because I think this is a very silly idea and I am here to do silly things. Also it will make my friend happy.

Rules:

Your submissions MUST be of Boyd Drake from the 2o17 reboot of Ducktales. You may submit your favorite screenshot, OR you can also submit art and edits, as long as you have permission from the creator.

I'm only leaving submissions open for a couple days, and I'll be accepting them through the inbox, but they must be marked as a submission or I will assume it's propaganda for why people should vote for Boyd.

Since I am a hater and also I am doing this to make my friend happy, we will not be accepting any Boyd Gearlooses in this competition. If your submission in some way implies that Gyro took Boyd away from his parents after the events of Astroboyd or that Boyd would rather be with the guy that tried to murder him than the people who took him in without question, it will be discarded and we'll probably make fun of you in the group chat to boot. Make your own tournament if you're so determined to be wrong.

One Boyd per submission, one submission per Boyd. I'm leaving anon off so there's no ballot stuffing going on. Also I'm probably going to stop once I get sixteen unique submissions I like anyway so. Numbers are meaningless.

Just to be clear, this is a very silly tournament that I'm doing while I get things ready for my next tournament, so don't expect anything grand. I literally just thought it would be funny.

AAAH THANK YOU ok I haven't worked on this fic in a hot minute (I'm so sorry sjsksa I promise it's coming)

1---I was super interested in Gyro's character after AstroBOYD (as was every Gyro fan) and I thought he had a lot of untapped potential. Honestly, it was just meant to be a short thing with Gyro and Boyd learning to become a family, and then suddenly there was a whole conspiracy and drama and?? Andy?? Idk I'd always loved him and felt like all the characters gave him SO MUCH undeserved grief that I really wanted to investigate him.

5--- Oh geez honestly I think a lot of the scenes with everyone just kinda chilling?? I'm much better at writing when there's something I really want everyone to say, so the scenes especially when Gyro and Boyd are just hanging out at their apartment or everyone hanging out and having fun - I honestly struggle a lot with that sort of dialogue lol. I also had a hard time during the scene when he stood up to his father for the first time just because ~projection~

14--- I want people to know that you can be better, you can be a good and kind and happy person, but sometimes that requires some effort. Things can get better if you try. Gyro has more support in his family, and found a new family himself, because he's trying now. He didn't just apologize and leave it at that. He's making an effort and reaching out to kids who need him because he doesn't want them to go through what he did. And that's making things better

15--- To nobody's surprise, Gyro and Andy are both characters I project onto A LOT (Boyd too, but to a lesser extent). In a weird way, I learned to deal with a lot of problems I've been struggling with through writing out their trouble and having them deal with it. It's helping me process a lot. The next chapter is kicking my ass because of this lol

RAPH AND DONNIE ARE MY FAVORITE UNDERRATED ROTTMNT DUO TOOOOOO AAOUGHGH !!! its so sad they were so underutilized as a duo within the show imo, like imagine if we could have gotten an ep of them being the main team up a la a repo mantis sort of thing !!! just set aside even the whole "brain and brawn" thing bc i think their potential is much richer than that, i mean raph is the big brother and donnie literally gets called out in the show for having "middle child energy !!!!" theyre also both like two of the funniest turtles imo like they would just bounce off each other so well

I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS WEIRD BOYD AND LOUIE NEVER INTEREACTED MUCH MORE AFTER HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOOFUS DRAKE ! as much as astroboyd and huey and boyd's friendships are both big favorites of mine within the whole show, louie also like. had a pretty significant influence on boyd's life too ? it seemed to me like they were setting up that louie felt kind of bad for him (especially with that shot of watching him just sink to the bottom of the pool after quote "conning him right out of sentience") so i think it would have been interesting to also have louie try to reach out and be his friend ! i also just like boyd having as many friends as possible. plus boyd is such a goodie two-shoes, it would have been funny and even kind of sweet to maybe see louie encourage him towards some mischief ! like he is also still just a kid. let him get into some little knucklehead trouble
