The history of the Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, dates to 1833 and Father Frederic Baraga. Construction of this particular building, however, began in 1875 and was completed the following year. The history is better explained here.

2001 Copenhagen - Number 26 - By The Way - "Svet okoli mene"

Diving headfirst into 2001 with a jury selection from the EMA final. EMA was trying something slightly new this year. There was a 22 song semi-final. The acts that finished in the top six of the televote got straight through to the final. From the remaining 16 songs, the six that finished highest with the juries got through. The final had two juries (one experts, one from the TV station itself) and a televote. These gave scores in the traditional Eurovision style which then combined to give a result. Wow. Complex or what?

Svet okoli mene (The World Around Me) by By The Way was one of those jury selected songs. It had finished 16th in the semi-final televote, which perhaps wasn't a good omen for its performance in the final. It did at least score points with all three sections of the scoring, but in total it received only five points and came 12th of the 12 songs.

I wish I could tell you more about this song. The only things that I've found out are that the band likely consist of Dragan Konstantin, Simon Baraga and Aleksandra Konstantin (not to be confused with Belarus's 2004 Eurovision entry), although this is not 100% and they may only be the songwriters. The band have one other song that I've found - Trenutek Pravi Je (The Moment is Right), but this exists on a 2002 Slovenian compilation album, not that I've heard this! There are no published lyrics for Svet okoli mene and I don't speak or understand Slovene.

The YouTube video for this song has, at the time of me writing this in 2023, 148 views and at least 10 of those views are from me. This has managed to reach this high in my chart purely because it's a competent, well-produced alt-rock/pop song with good vocals and good song-writing. This sort of soft, upbeat indie-infused music is the bread and butter of my late teenage years and I can't help liking it, especially as there's very little of in the national finals and Eurovision.

By The Way, wherever you are, you have a fan!

This has to be the most obscure song I've listed so far and if anyone knows anything at all about this band or song, please get in touch.

A year ago yesterday a neighbor and I rushed Todd to the ER in Ontonagon. He was lethargic and had been throwing up black bile. He was rushed to Marquette the next day (the 23) and they had to stop on the way cause he flatlined and was brought unresponsive into Baraga. That hospital got him back and from there he was rushed on to Marquette. He spent 3 days in ICU (one of which was our 9th anniversary). On Thursday he was moved to a recovery room and that Friday, the 26; he was able to go home.
