There have been other artists who have paved the way, ie. Vanessa Beecroft, why do you think it is still considered controversial and shocking for a female artist to portray her sexuality as outwardly powerful and/or vulnerable?
JS: While many women artists have displayed their own sexuality in their artwork, every girl and woman still has to confront this topic individually and form her own convictions. It's something we continuously re-examine as we age and deal with new personal  struggles. There are so many conflicting messages in society regarding a woman’s stance on her own sexuality and most women are still trying to figure it out for themselves. On one hand, society definitely rewards physical beauty yet, in many other ways, it can be an impediment. Increasingly, I think people turn to media figures as a barometer for their own morality. For the "Shock Challenge" I wanted to generate discussion about the way women are often criticized because of images they present of themselves – particularly the way certain female celebrities objectify themselves by posting sexy personal photos on social networking platforms such as Twitter. Often these photos are low-resolution and snapped from cell phones. I decided to photograph myself in this manner as a sort of contemporary “self-portraiture” and elevate the photos to fine art status by re-contextualizing them. I then displayed the images in the gallery and allowed the audience to physically alter the work in any way with sharpies, which draws attention to the way women are criticized online. I titled the piece, “Triple Self-Portrait in Bathroom,” which references Andy Warhol, an artist known for working with the idea of celebrity persona.
Another reason it may still be considered controversial is because of female competition, which occurs in part due to socially imposed myths of female worth. The scrutiny with which women can judge each other is incredible. Growing up, I wasn’t horrendously unattractive but I did go through an “awkward phase,” and for five years of my life other girls ridiculed me nearly every day. Now that I am older and have grown into my looks, I am condemned by some women because I keep up my appearance, when if I didn’t I would be put down for it. The world sets up a standard for beauty, then criticizes those who admit they struggle with it. I’m willing to honestly examine this contradiction through my artwork.
FP: You've also mentioned isolationism in your statement...a theme that seems to be prevalent in American culture today, particularly because of the internet, and our ability to be alone yet still remain virtually connected. Can you speak about how that relates to your work?
JS: I think the piece I did for the "Art That Moves You" challenge on WOA, "11x17", touches on the issue of isolationism in contemporary urban culture. It also examines voyeurism, a somewhat natural response to isolation.  While most people do not spy on their neighbors' with binoculars, voyeurism has transcended to the internet in a more diluted version, where many of us use social networking platforms and blogs to comment on the lives of those we see on Television and other forms of Media. The pseudo-anonimity of the Internet offers protection while potentially causing further isolation. I think this has affected women in a very specific way. Oftentimes women display sexy images of themselves in an attempt to garner attention or praise, yet this often backfires into “unwarranted” criticism. Too often photos or explicit videos are released without consent.
FP: In regards to the nudity on the show...it really was a missed opportunity as you said for the production to discuss the current state of feminism as it pertains to the art world. Such a HUGE topic and yet (for the sake of time constraints? titillation of tv?) Bravo chose to edit down your provocative "shock value" piece to a hot girl defaulting to her own voyeuristic sexuality more than anything else. How did you feel about that? What could they have done to further the dialogue? What do you think would have happened if say one of the male artists had asked to photograph you naked or had photographed themselves naked...do you think more or less would have been made of that episode?
JS: So far my character has appeared very one-dimensional. The fact is, I am not a "bimbo" in any capacity.  Instead of portraying my true personality, they jumped on every opportunity to dumb-down my character. I was very disturbed by the way my piece, “Triple Self-Portrait in Bathroom,” was depicted on Work of Art as well as the way my character and art making process were completely distorted. I don’t think this was done because of time constraints; rather, it was done to create a very simple story arch that any casual viewer could follow. This was problematic because it made me look like I default to nudity without any thought behind the concept of the work, which undermines my art process. I am not shy about my appearance as they suggest, but I did feel incredibly vulnerable being taped in the nude. There's a huge difference between presenting a photograph that I have carefully selected and composed, verses handing over raw footage that can be manipulated in any way whatsoever. I was very hesitant about doing this but I believed in the piece and the producers said they needed the footage only to display my process. Yet in the episode, the rest of my process was barely discussed, then it was falsely made to look as though I was not responsible for conceptualizing the final product.
The treatment of sensitive issues on set was different for the boys. A male contestant was not required to film himself ejaculating on a piece of art, which caused some tension on set.
FP: In The Art of Reflection: Women Artists' Self-Portraiture in the Twentieth Century, Marsha Meskimmon states: "If the task was to find oneself, then the crisis for the postmodern subject is that nowhere is home, everything shifts and changes. What is the reflection in the mirror that 'vanity' holds? She refuses now to be the 'site' of another's desire and reflects back to you the insubstantiality of your projections."1
Do you think it's possible for the physicality of an attractive female artist to ever be a separate entity from her work, particularly if she is the subject matter of her own work? Is vanity and the mirror important to an artist?
JS:  To answer the question, if the womans' chosen subject matter deals with nudity or sexuality in the form of self-portraiture - i.e. Marina Abramovic, Cindy Sherman - no, I don't feel the artist's appearance could be a seperate entity. If the subject matter involves sexy images of other women or the imagery is more illustrative - i.e. Lisa Yuskavage, Hillary Harkness - I think it will be much less of an issue. I think it can only be a non-issue if the artist completely plays down her appearance or doesn't acknowledge it in her work. Yet this doesn't necessarily mean it won't be an issue. At a college critique, a guest artist was invited to our studios and the minute he saw me, before he ever saw my work, he blurted out, “you are the artist”?  “You don’t look anything like an artist... YOU are as interesting as your work." This sort of thing happened so often that I made a decision to incorporate my appearance into my work.
FP: Another great quote from this same book: "One of the key issues in feminist theory has been that of women's voice in male language. To what extent is it possible to enunciate a truly different position when you are already within the structures which mark your difference?"2 Do you think the art world is still a predominantly masculine one or is it now equal...what has your experience been thus far?
JS:  While certainly more doors are now open to female artists, there’s no denying the highest paid artists are all still men. There’s also no denying that the vast majority of Art collectors are men.  I worked for Jeff Koons for two years and there were very few women who came in to purchase work. Granted, this may simply be because men still make more money than women and if women had more spending power, more of us would invest in contemporary art. I think it is a challenge to make work about women that can appeal to both a male and female audience on the same level. We respond to images of the female form rather differently, and it's hard to subvert the provocative aspect of a sexualized image.
FP: The high-low art status is interesting in your pieces --do you think anything can be elevated to art status by redepicting it?
JS:  Yes, it can, if done in a particular way.  Intent is important -- low art must be appropriated in an intelligent way. For instance, a high school student copying his incredible hulk comic book is entirely different than Jeff Koons appropriating the hulk into his personal iconography.
FP: You worked as a studio assistant to pop art icon Jeff Koons. Has he influenced your work? And who are your biggest influences?
JS:  Before I ever worked for Jeff Koons, I loved his Made in Heaven series as well as his Luxury/Degradation series. Speaking of Made in Heaven, that’s a prime example of low-art being successfully elevated to high -art. Jeff Koons is brilliant and there are very few people who love art as much as he does. Working at his studio was an incredible learning experience. It was so interesting to see how he spoke with visitors about his work and I learned an incredible amount of technical skill while at his studio. Jeff talked "acceptance" quite often. We must accept who we are -- our individual and collective pasts -- our shortcomings, failures, weaknesses, and strengths. As artists, we must be honest with ourselves in order to make work that is personal yet transcends to a wider audience. So many artists have influenced my work, but to name a few: Damien Hirst, Marilyn Minter, Laurel Nakadate, Liz Cohen, Vanessa Beecroft
FP: Where do you see your work evolving now that you've participated in Bravo's Work of Art? Has the show inspired you in a new direction? What's on the horizon? Where can we see your work next?
JS:  Participating in the reality show was an experience like no other. It really made me more aware of the internet as a portal for criticism and dialogue in fine art. It also opened my eyes to how incredibly critical and voyeuristic our culture is, and I think I would like to comment even further on these qualities in my new projects. The show also allowed me to branch out into other mediums when appropriate, something I think I may have been afraid to do before.  Since the show wrapped up, I’ve been continuing my series of figurative paintings as well as a new series of explosions that respond to the war and oil spill.

Below, I’m sharing a long outline of what was discussed in this wonderful interview, for those who can’t or prefer not to listen but want to know the content. It is very long and I don’t feel like finding pictures so you’ll have to just enjoy it like it is. It’s not a transcript but it is, in my own words for the most part, a recitation of everything Susana and Rebecca talked about: musicals, the upcoming movie, animation influences, and quite a few things you did not already know.
Susana introduces the interview by saying that tons of attention is paid to the diversity and the characters and all this great stuff in the show, but she wants to talk about the science fiction aspects and the society and worldbuilding Rebecca and her team have put in. She begins by talking about how the show seems so planned considering aspects of the show's beginning feed so well into the end, and she asks Rebecca to talk about that.
Rebecca opens by saying it was conceived as a coming-of-age story, so a ton of stuff that the adults know, Steven doesn't know, allowing it to be a story about things that happened to adults but remain child-friendly. Rebecca brings up a college class on the sublime that she took, about what's going on and implied to be going on just outside the frame of the art, so she was really taken with that concept.
Rebecca claims that her planning is pretty dry, and it's just a bunch of charts. She had stuff like Fusion names and weapons from the beginning, and of course she couldn't use them in her pitch because it didn't make sense without knowing the characters. Susana mentions that CN wanted the show to be aired in no particular order, and Rebecca mentions how it was hard to work with because she DID want continuity. Planting seeds in episodes and giving puzzle pieces that'd come together later worked for a long time, while still making each episode work as a whole and be satisfying. Later, when CN came to them wanting like eight related episodes, there they had the barn arc to give them--they had already planned to make this story related. She felt it aired in a "bizarre" way, but they comforted themselves on the Crew knowing someday people would watch it how it was meant to be watched. As a lead-up to the movie, CN IS going to air "every Steven ever," so people will actually get to see it in marathon format.
Batman: The Animated Series comes up and they discuss how censorship limited what they could do on that show because of problems with glass breaking. Susana says she actually really appreciates it when stories can still be told well despite the constraints put on them, and asks Rebecca if that applies to SU. Rebecca agrees that it does, and also that she loves stuff like video games that managed to function with ridiculously small space requirements. Developers still offered up such creativity, she says. So because of the beauty that arises from those constraints, she thought she should have constraints in her show on purpose, even if it isn't applied from outside. The most obvious one for this show was that we're trapped into only knowing and seeing what Steven knows and sees. "The Test" is a good example of Steven actually seeing something he isn't supposed to see: the Gems having a private conversation about him. According to her, plenty of stuff is written about what the Gems are up to outside of what Steven knows about them, and they can only kind of hint at it.
Coming from Adventure Time, there were some similar aspects. Rebecca got to work with some of her heroes from independent comics, and she got a lot of inspiration from them. On Adventure Time, it's our world but far in the future, and Rebecca would have loved to do something similar with Steven because she loved that aspect. Quite a few of the Adventure Time crew had come over from Flapjack and they thought it would be funny if the Adventure Time characters found a tape of Flapjack. As much as it would have been cool to take that idea for her show, that was theirs, so Steven's is more like it's our Earth but in an alternate timeline where Gems invaded 6,000 years ago. She rattles off some known similarities and differences of our two worlds, and elaborates on how Hollywood is in Kansas because in that world Disney never left where they started. Laugh-O-Gram Studio took off like it didn't in our timeline. She has a ton of other info like that but it won't matter to reveal it until or unless it matters to Steven. (She also throws in that Harman-Ising could be Ising-Harman in her world if they never figured out how cute it would be to have it the other way.)
When Susana asks about how she took so many details and managed to make a pilot with enough of them that she could get a show with it, Rebecca takes a turn into discussing working on Hotel Transylvania (for just a month!) with Genndy Tartakovsky. She had been planning to have a month off, but then Genndy asked, so she of course couldn't say no and felt she learned a ton. (She wrote the Steven Universe theme song in the car during that commute, by the way, given that she had a lot of time to sing and be alone.) When she hit Genndy with some of her ideas, he advised her to slim the details down and just boil it into its essence--who are the people and what is their relationship to each other? She still uses that advice, trying to condense things from macro to micro. She has succeeded since in figuring out how to keep the complexity and still assert the simplicity. Ultimately, you can keep those details but you don't have to emphasize them if they're not feeding into the main point. They'll drag the piece down. They discuss Genndy's role as the Animation Director on her pilot, which happened when she was asking if he knew anyone and he ended up saying he'd do it himself. She was so shocked that he agreed to direct her pilot that she was dazed and ran into a pole in the parking lot. The whistling of the wind through the resulting dent always made her giddy because she was thinking she would be working with Genndy.
Susana then turns to discussing Rebecca's influences and brings up Revolutionary Girl Utena. Rebecca mentions that she initially saw Utena because a person named Connie lent it to her in high school, so that's where SU's Connie's name comes from. Rebecca points out how hilarious Utena is in addition to being beautiful. She felt it was formative because Utena was "gender expansive and bisexual." Rebecca saw the movie first (which she doesn't recommend doing), then saw the series and then the movie again. She wanted to understand why the characters were turning into cars. (Chronicler's note: I was equally baffled by the Utena movie's car chase and car transformation stuff in the early 2000s. I did not know what to make of it.)
Rebecca elaborates on Utena and art influences, saying she loves to trace artists' influences to see where their pieces were coming from. She saw that Utena is very influenced by Princess Knight, and she was thrilled to visit places in Japan that influenced Osamu Tezuka. The Takurazuka Theatre is in Tezuka's town, and Rebecca describes how every show there is performed only by women. She felt that having this theater there influencing Tezuka certainly inspired him to include gender expansiveness in his work. The influences are so obvious when you look at the sources, and now all of this that came through Tezuka's work then through Utena then to Rebecca is so incredible.
When Susana brings up trends and how magical girl stuff influenced today's creators, Rebecca says she prefers not to think of it as a trend really because some of what's roaring out in popularity now was always around but was actively prevented from being made in the past. She talks about watching Tenchi Universe (the "Universe" part of SU came from Tenchi!) and Sailor Moon on CN, knowing it wasn't American, but she didn't really realize it "didn't belong" on the network, and felt that her access to influences was really unusually open--especially since her dad was an animation nerd and had a bunch of unusual stuff that influenced her, especially stuff that gave her a peek into how animation actually worked and knowledge that she could be one of the people making it. If she could call anything a trend now, it's that that sort of access is now available to more people because of the interconnectedness of the Internet and how we're so much more capable of influencing each other now.
They then discuss some anime stuff they had been exposed to and how Rebecca helped with an intro to Whisper of the Heart which is her favorite movie. She discusses how that movie (and Kiki's Delivery Service) are good representations of creative processes and sometimes what happens if an artist is blocked. She thinks the actual craft and work associated with the process is more important (and more interesting) than talent. Rebecca adores artists who take notes and figure out how to make their stuff good versus a specific moment of inspiration or an artist just "bleeding" their talent on everything. Art is a craft! You can study it! This is front and center in Whisper of the Heart. Rebecca discusses the Russian movie Film Film Film (which influenced the Zircons' design), and it has a writer character who is afraid that his process will destroy something inspired by a muse. She thinks it's a really interesting look at process.
Next they discuss a science fiction story in another format: the book The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin. Kat Morris lent Rebecca the book while they were roommates at the very beginning of when the show was starting. She loved seeing how the world worked in the book through the way they treated the main character. They also discuss the artist Jules Feiffer, who Rebecca had a relationship with because she carpooled with his nephews. They gave her a book of his called A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of Tears. She loved it so much, especially how it deconstructed fairy tale tropes. One story was about a prince whose special ability made people close to him laugh themselves senseless, so he really couldn't have a relationship with anyone. She considers this an influence on Pink Diamond as a character. The SU character Sadie was named after this book's character Plain Sadie.
Next, Susana asks about musical influences for the show. Rebecca names Patti LuPone first. She saw Patti as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd and remembers seeing her playing the tuba in this weird arrangement where the cast was also the orchestra. She was so impressed. When she later wrote to Patti asking her to be Yellow Diamond, she referenced learning from her that a person could be so dramatic that it's funny and vice versa. She also has a "chills" moment from a different show, during "Everything's Coming Up Roses," where the character she's playing is imagining an audience going wild but the actual audience IS going wild.
As they discuss how the upcoming movie is a musical, Rebecca talks about going home with Ian after work and putting on musicals or movies based on TV shows so they can "study" for what they're doing. She'd take notes about what works and what doesn't and why. She loves these old movies that dissolve into total weirdness by the third act. She references Ziegfeld Girl and Busby Berkeley movies, which were an influence on Homeworld's style. She subscribes to a philosophy attributed to Bob Fosse that characters have to be feeling something strongly if they're compelled to sing. She makes a reference to A Goofy Movie as a movie that moved from a TV show to a movie. She wished that movie had more songs.
Susana and Rebecca discuss the movie, some intense moments, the history of Goofy and how different some of the old versions of him are, and how a description of Goofy by Art Babbitt was influential on her. She loves that cartoons can be so many things, and she adores studying moments from them and incorporating them. There are some really horrifying discoveries you can make, but you can also reinterpret some of the beautiful moments and stir them together to get new brilliance.
Susana says many songs in Steven Universe become the centerpiece of an episode, but in "Mr. Greg" it's more like a typical musical even though it's an episode of a cartoon show. Rebecca agrees that it was great practice for the movie. She was more moved by that episode coming back than any other so far by that point. She also felt that "For Just One Day Let's Only Think About (Love)," the song, was a great practice musical song--especially since there's all that chatting in between singing. That song was really influenced by A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum's song "Comedy Tonight." She finds those kinds of musicals so much fun. She was influenced in "Mr. Greg" by Victor/Victoria--specifically the song "Crazy World" when the camera is panning around the protagonist (who's wearing a suit). They're of course dated, but they contain beautiful moments. She took home some of the Pearl drawings from "It's Over, Isn't It" when she went to the studio in Korea. (Yes, Steven Universe is animated on paper, though the color is digital.) Elaborating on "Mr. Greg," she says the episode became much simpler and sweeter--originally there was some intense stuff in there, like Pearl picking up cars and throwing them at Greg.
Back to the movie, Susana points out that Rebecca's been studying how to make a conversion to a cinematic story versus a really long TV episode. What makes something feel like a movie? Rebecca struggles to figure out how to talk about it without saying too much. She figures you have to dig into the fundamentals of the show--make a movie about something new, but something basic. She loved the Dexter movie and it was so smart. Rebecca has a weird connection to the Beavis and Butt-Head movie too (some of her crew worked on the movie!), but she thinks even that movie is smart because they're all about watching TV and in the movie their TV is taken.
Susana then asks about the movie length format and how it felt from going from a very short TV format to a movie. Rebecca's word to describe it is "terrifying." The episode "Change Your Mind" was 44 minutes and that was a ridiculously long format for them--but it carried the extra baggage of tying up so much of what they'd dumped into the show. Rebecca said they couldn't really even "feel good" about finishing it because the immediate next step was something that was so much more of everything hard about "Change Your Mind." Rebecca elaborates on the elements that were ramped up for the movie and concludes "What I'm trying to say is I'm really tired." She's really, really excited for us to see it. It's so different than a bunch of episodes tied together, even if it was eight "Mr. Greg" episodes. All the pieces have to be awesome and then tied together have all the pieces inform each other. She remembers being impressed by anime as a kid because it usually told interconnected stories, and she thought that would be really hard; turns out self-contained episodes are even harder, and she has to kind of do both on her show. She thinks of her songs like that too--they must be good on their own, but they enhance each other by all being part of the same work and building something better together.
Finally, Susana asks what comes next after Steven Universe--one day, when the show does end, what does Rebecca want to do? Well, take time off, write some guitar songs, write poetry no one will ever see, and so on. Rebecca says that her head is really in SU now though, and there's so much more to do--yes, there is more to tell that comes after the movie, and she wants us to know there are also stories that belong in that two-year gap between the end of "Change Your Mind" and the beginning of the movie, but she feels this is a good place to stop talking. She's so excited about everything we have yet to see.

What do you want to see in a joker sequel? Do you want a sequel? With Joaquin Pheonix
This is... an interesting question, nonnie. And I’m so sorry about the fucking thesis that I’m about to unleash, but hey, I’m an industry hopeful, so I think about this kinda thing a lot.
I mean. Here’s the thing, Joker is in a weird space because I think I could go the rest of my life without a follow-up to what has become my favorite movie of all time and be happy about it. It’s so rare in today’s industry to see such an incredibly well executed, self-contained narrative. ESPECIALLY a pop culture property. The likelihood that it would fall to the usual sequel pitfalls seems incredibly likely (studio pressure and time constraint being some), and to ruin a really good story for that just doesn’t seem worth it to me. I like Joker as the one comic book movie that stood on its own two feet. That didn’t try and force a moral or put its main character into a box, but rather told Arthurs story and allowed you to fill in the blanks about who his character is and what he means. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again: That is worth more to me than a whole decade of Marvel films (I’m not knocking them, but in terms of narrative quality, all the avengers combined will never hold a candle to this single film about one fucking dude).
... but also, I’m never one to say never. Where there’s an idea, there’s a solid 50/50 chance of executing it well or poorly, and that outcome depends entirely on where you focus your efforts in building the narrative off of what you’ve already done. Todd I think knows that as I’m pretty sure he said in an interview that it would have to embolden the themes of the first. Problem is that I don’t think he may know what that means
But I do, because I’m a fucking madman who has a whole notebook full of this shit. So with all that in mind, I have a few critera that I can think of off the top of my head thatTodd and the crew would need to focus on in order to make any sequel to Joker really worth it.
The narrative superposition that is maintained throughout the film that allows for narrow, but free interpretation of the characters within (this kind of stuff that allows you to come to your own conclusions about whether everything that happens in the movie is stuff that the joker made up while in the hospital or really happened, whether he really is thomas wayne’s illigitimate son or not, etc.). It’s positively the film’s best quality and following this up in a way that wouldn’t ruin the air of mystery of the first would be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. But I believe that if Todd stuck to his guns, didn’t reveal any answers to the original questions we’re left with in the first movie, and makes up NEW questions surrounding Arthur’s charater (and perhaps any other new characters that are necessary for the longevity of this depiction of the batman universe), then it can maintain some of the enigmatic, cinematically roarschach-y kinda quality that the first one had and make the sequel worthy of the name.
I think one of the greatest charms of this film is how heavily reminiscent of films like Taxi Driver and Network and other late 70’s/early 80’s indie flicks it was. But I think it doesn’t necessarily have to stick with those specific inspirations. I’d like to see it go in a different direction (my personal favorite and one that’s inspired a long fanfic of my own being early legal films with an emphasis on moral ambiguity and “the impossible court case” like To Kill A Mockingbird and Inherit the Wind). So another sort of tasteful repurposing of themes and aesthetics from classic films wouldn’t be too out of line, and it would be interesting to see what kind of personality this version of Gotham takes on because of it.
The music. It needs to follow in that period-appropriate tradition that gives a good feel for the person and the place. Hildur would obviously need to come back for the score (I cannot see a complete sequel without her, todd, lawrence sher and Joaquin honestly), but all the little music on the side would need to count just as much. I’ve got my own ideas to this end (in a playlist that I hope I’ll publish eventually), but the feel would have to feel classic but evolved from the previous soundtrack.
This is probably gonna get me a lot of hate, but here it goes: I don’t think Arthur Fleck should be the main character. Why? Well, it all boils down to that air of mystery again. The matter of fact is- this ain’t your granddaddy’s joker, running around like a mob boss and wreaking havoc in gotham for a thrill. This guy is down to earth with deeply rooted emotional motive and method behind the things he did. In order to appreciate his character even more, I would like to look at him from the periphery of another character. To know the depth of his actions not at an emotional distance, but rather at a physical distance. I think someone like perhaps The Riddler would be a good jumping off point for this kind of thing, or perhaps some other classic batman villains renewed in this gritty 80’s indie Gotham. Of course, Joaquin would have to reprise, but with someone else observing his actions he might have enough range to find some new avenues to take with the character. (And honestly, nonnie? I don’t think this one really hardcore falls into absolute sequel critera like the other two. This is only really ONE avenue that a sequel could take. But I can’t come up with all of them in one post.)

A Day in the Life at eWN
It’s now been sixth months since I started my journey with eWN. Prior to eWomenNetwork I spent 10 years in Business Development at Barnes & Noble, where I focused heavily on live events for major authors, book festivals, and more. In addition to that, I also have backgrounds in theater, creative writing, visual arts, STEM, and Public Relations.
While I’m usually a little embarrassed by how bizarrely diversified my background is, one of the things Kym told me back in July was that it was a perfect fit for eWN. He assured me that every skill I’ve acquired as I trekked across the world could be put to good use here. And as it turns out, he was right.
MORNING
I get up at the same time every morning. Even if I weren’t a creature of habit, which I am, my dog wouldn’t allow for anything else. I feed him, take him out, brush my teeth, then sit on the couch to do my makeup while watching Schitt’s Creek. When I collect my things to leave, Bailey sits on the couch with a look of resentment as I head out the door.
I’m very lucky I only live 4 miles from the office. Even without the tollway (like Sandra said at conference, I too hate taking the tollway when it’s not necessary), it only takes 11 minutes.
Our building is lovely and in a great part of town. I park in the underground parking garage and head up the elevator to eWN.
I settle in, catch up on email, and get into the groove for the day. Three days a week, we all have a slack call at 9am. The entire team from top to bottom goes over the main things they’re focusing on. It’s a nice change from other jobs I’ve had in that the team has excellent focus and does a pretty great job at staying on topic, so the meetings are quick, efficient, and informative.
LESSON: Quick and focused debriefs are the best.
I have an hour before our first zoom meeting and I take that time to confirm details for some upcoming Celebrity Science Photoshoots. By the time I reach out to the photographers, makeup and hair teams, stylists, and studios for each shoot, I’m pretty sure they all think I’m crazy because I have a tendency to over confirm, but better safe than sorry.
Our first zoom meeting of the day is an internal creative strategy session for a Break the Stale client. This is where the whole team (i.e. Kym, Briana, Graphic Designers, Copywriters, Web Designers, etc.) comes together after having read the client’s intake form and we have a deep dive strategy session on where we’re going with the project. These are always fun and it’s exciting to see how the before and afters turn out. These meetings last at least an hour, but often go much longer when the creative juices flowing.
LESSON: Don't put time constraints on brainstorming and creative, great things come from long sessions!
I hop straight into another zoom call to go over a Style Color Mood Narrative I created with Briana. Style Color Mood Narratives are kind of like a visual brand guide that outline your color palette, fonts, and the overall visual direction of your brand. Once we complete the SCMN, clients bring them to their designers and graphics people to implement that energy and style into their websites and other collateral for their businesses. All the years I spent painting in art classes means that I’m pretty good at creating these, but sometimes I get fixated on one image and Briana swoops in to yank me back into the bigger picture. It turns out pretty beautifully.

Texas Forever: Taylor Kitsch Is Doing Hollywood His Way (Exclusive) Taylor Kitsch isn’t here to impress. “I get so bored if I play the same or look the same in every role,” Kitsch says on a pleasant January afternoon in Pasadena, Calif. The 36-year-old actor is gearing up for the most transformative role of his career in Waco, the six-part Paramount Network miniseries about the 1993 siege premiering Wednesday, Jan. 24. The Kelowna, British Columbia, native plays David Koresh, controversial leader of the Branch Davidians, who, along with 75 of his followers, perished in a deadly fire following a violent 51-day standoff with the FBI. “Maybe it’s an older school mindset,” he theorizes, leaning back in his chair in deep thought, a cool, laidback confidence radiating from him. “I love the grind.” Kitsch first broke out onscreen in 2006, as brooding bad boy Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights, becoming a favorite among young female fans of the NBC drama. Since the show ended in 2011, he’s largely steered away from roles akin to the character that propelled him to heartthrob status, instead leaning into parts that weren’t exactly tailor-made for him to begin with: a gay activist in The Normal Heart, a villainous operative in American Assassin, a successful weed dealer in Savages and most recently, one of the elite firefighters battling the Yarnell Hill Fire in Only the Brave. “I grew up on these guys, like the Sean Penns and the Gary Oldmans. I think there’s a high to that. I love that challenge,” he says. “When I started studying acting that was kind of what it was about: figuring out your process to create these different characters.” As Koresh, Kitsch unlocks another hidden ability in his growing breadth as an actor, exuding a level of charm and magnetism in Waco that is both mesmerizing and mystifying, only because the man he portrays wasn’t a good man at all. “There aren’t many characters like this that exist. He’s enigmatic and crazy brilliant and crazy, period,” says Kitsch, who calls Austin, Texas home. In order to realistically embody the sect leader, Kitsch -- who also serves as an executive producer -- grew out his hair and dropped 30 pounds in four months; his 500-calorie diet consisted of egg whites, coffee, vegetables, a tiny bit of protein and, after 4 p.m., broth. “Losing weight when you already don’t have too much to lose, it’s no fun, but it’s just part of it,” Kitsch says of his transformation, adding that it played “a huge part in the cadence” of a “mad genius” like Koresh. “The way you walk, the way you feel… It reaffirmed how smart he had to be because it was never blunt force. It couldn’t be. He couldn’t intimidate that way.” It also required Kitsch to lose himself in Koresh’s world -- and he took it quite literally. For months leading up to filming in Santa Fe, New Mexico, last April, Kitsch devoted “eight to 10 hours a day” familiarizing himself with all facets of David Koresh’s intricate life. That included four hours of guitar and singing lessons, scripture readings, dissecting hours upon hours of Koresh’s tapes and researching his difficult upbringing. “It was almost laughable in the beginning. I would joke around about how much prep I had,” Kitsch recalls. There were moments during the production of Waco that proved challenging. Kitsch zeroed in on the sermons as being particularly “tough” to memorize and he became obsessed with nailing the improbable task. “I’m more known for saying less is more,” Kitsch says, alluding to his famous FNL character, Riggins, “so to be as talky as Dave… But when you’re mixing in scripture, it’s just so hard to infuse into my brain. I’d be in my house in Santa Fe and I’d have all these white boards all over the house of scriptures and psalms and everything that I had to remember in episode five, six or in a monologue. Everywhere in the house I could see it, I would say it out loud, walk over there, see it and say it out loud.” The most daunting part about playing Koresh, though, had nothing to do with memorizing nine-page sermons and everything to do with standing in front of a mic. “The singing and guitar was ******ing scary man,” Kitsch confesses, a nervous laugh escaping his lips. (Koresh performed with his band in local Waco bars and church services. Survivor David Thibodeau, whose 1999 book on which Waco is based, said Koresh recruited members through music.) “I’ve never been in a ******ing singing booth either, putting it on a track so we could go film it two days later. So I’d go in the studio with a real band, which is scary to begin with, and be like, ‘Hey, I’m about to sing ‘My Sharona,’ are you ready?’ and they’re like” -- he gives a knowing look -- “‘All right...?’ They were awesome and supportive, and I gained a lot of confidence from that.” There was once a time when Kitsch’s stardom was fast approaching elite status. Fresh off the success of Friday Night Lights, Hollywood came knocking with two very expensive tentpoles, Battleship and John Carter -- films that held the promise of proclaiming him the next franchise superstar. It just didn’t happen. Both films bombed at the box office and were panned by critics. “I’ll read articles, but I won’t go on Rotten Tomatoes,” Kitsch, who only recently joined Instagram, cracks. Though it didn’t seem that way at the time, in hindsight, his failures were blessings in disguise: Kitsch had the opportunity to redirect his career on a far more interesting path. “I feel I’ve stayed the course,” Kitsch says, analyzing his ups and downs with a refreshing candor. “I’m proud of the way I reacted to John Carter. I’m proud of the way I reacted to Battleship. I still have no regrets really. At the time in your life that these opportunities present themselves, I would have done it again knowing the circumstance and knowing what was going on. What I’m proud of is my work ethic throughout. I’ve never wavered. I feel like I’m getting better and better. I think Waco is a great example of that.” “When you have people who believe in you and give you these chances, I just won’t let go of that opportunity,” he adds, his steadfast loyalty and gratitude to those who have seen him as more than just a pretty face unwavering. “I don’t know if it’s something I’ve learned; it’s something I’m proud of -- that I’ve, in that sense, kept grinding. It’s kind of all I know now. I’ve always -- in sports, in life -- there’s a way I make it where I have to grind, you know what I mean? It’s the underdog thing. It carries me or I carry that with me, whatever that is.” Kitsch has rarely spoken about the much-maligned second season of HBO’s True Detective, in which he portrayed closeted highway officer and ex-military man Paul Woodrugh. He acknowledges that the 2015 season was far from perfect though his experience was “really, really positive” (“Obviously, it’s not the best case that people didn’t react to it that way,” Kitsch says). While it may seem, from the outside at least, to have been a contributing factor in the long gap between TV projects, Kitsch assures that wasn’t the case. “I remember watching season one [of True Detective] -- I haven’t told anyone this -- and sitting in bed and I was like, ‘If I could ******ing get on a show like that…,” he remembers. “You’re allowed to let go a lot easier when you understand you put everything you could that you had control over that you felt you knocked out. You can walk away a lot easier.” Kitsch still keeps in touch with creator Nic Pizzolatto (“I’d go work with Nic tomorrow”) and he’s looking forward to the third installment with Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (“They got an amazing cast”). There’s an ounce of disappointment in his voice when he eventually evaluates what went wrong. “Season one was incredible and I think it’ll go down as all-time, and that says a lot because there is some amazing stuff in the last 30 years. I think the bar was crazy high, which I have no problem swinging for, but there were some constraints in the timing of it,” Kitsch says. “Sometimes you’re on a movie or you’re in a relationship and the magic just isn’t there, or you are in one and everything just seems to play out the right way. I’m sure I could speak for the other leads in it -- man, we were all proud to be there. Everyone came beyond prepared -- you have to when you’re working with Nic -- and we swung.” Next for Kitsch is a tale that has stayed in his brain for the past several years, like an earworm that just won’t leave his head. Titled Pieces, Kitsch plans to write, direct, star and produce the feature film based on his 2014 short about three guys who grew up in the worst part of town with a sudden opportunity to change their kids’ and families’ lives. “It’s a bit savage-y. It’s a bit Western-y. It’s a grimy movie. Everything f***king goes crazy,” Kitsch says with a glint of excitement piercing through his deep green eyes. He’s never done anything this intensive before, executing his own idea from page to screen. Could this be Kitsch’s next chapter in his career? “We’ll see how this goes,” he says with an anxious laugh. Asked if he’s nervous about jumping into something so deeply personal that will truly be his, Kitsch didn’t mince words: “You should be. Hopefully, I’m nervous about my next job too. It’s a story that won’t leave me. I want to do this and I want to do it my way.”

Persistence & Gaming

If the next wave of social is built around gaming, then the lessons we pull from these formerly more distinct categories will likely lead to a game dynamic which pushes forward the tensions of social networks, with the expressiveness of digital worlds. This dynamic is persistence.
Over the past two years the games that have brought social + gaming thinking to the mainstream have been a combination of Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, and most recently, Animal Crossing. Each of these games have served a slightly different user base, with varying levels of social mechanics baked into the product that enabled weak to strong communication and expression across the platform.
The core thesis though of captive, synchronous experience has bled into many of these game-turned-social products over the years, as well as more traditional social products such as Houseparty (now part of Epic Games) and more recently Clubhouse. This dynamic has only further been amplified now that our synchronicity and schedules are all effectively the same while sheltering in place.
With Fortnite, the social dynamic is encouraged in ~20 minute sprints (or more if in the UGC-driven Creative mode) that often is filled with fairly monotonous activity (traversing the island) and broken up by spurts of action (battles).
With Animal Crossing, we see a continually monotonous core game mechanic of building out your island that puts the idea of self-expression (and the importance of sharing this expression with your friends) within a video game on steroids. Although Animal Crossing does have very strong social dynamics in the game today, it has poor social infrastructure, in that the execution of social play is quite cumbersome due to technology choices.

What Animal Crossing does have however is a feeling of a form of persistence, an illusion created by being greeted by Tom Nook giving his daily update each time you return, as well as game mechanics that require you to pass time in order to allow work to be done on your island. In addition the island boasts an asynchronous social experience that results in your real and digital world friends and family leaving you various notes and gifts while you’re away. They specifically hack the persistence + social dynamic by isolating each world into an "island", something that allows for individual instancing of these expression mechanisms.
This feeling of persistence creates an incentive to come back daily (along with other core game loops like bonuses for accessing the store, and the stalk market). But while AC is generally lauded for its mainstream success, I'd argue that we perhaps it was an exercise in a missed opportunity that has led to seemingly lower retention (a fine dynamic based on the business model of a $59.99 purchase). AC is a case study or precursor to the future of social and gaming due to it merely scratching the surface on many of the social dynamics that lead to multi-year usage of successful social networks or games.
DEFINING PERSISTENCE
Gaming in general right now is at an impasse where we have monolithic platforms and studios like Unity, Epic Games, Riot, and Rockstar (a subsidiary of Take Two), benefitting from years of R&D investment, paired with changing business models. As a result, companies across the entire ecosystem are investing billions to try to build the next game-turned-IP-turned-platform as they recognize the massive TAM expansion happening within their industry.
Because of these competitive dynamics, we should instead think of new behaviors or game dynamics that could create new types of experiences that play into each of these separate industry's strengths. We last saw the rise of Battle Royale as a gaming format take hold, birthing multiple major game successes. Persistence could birth the next wave of social + gaming networks.
But what does Persistence mean?
The familiar metaphor is that the modern MMO is a theme park. Players encounter each other in the concourses and queuing for the rides, but fundamentally experience every roller coaster alone, one at a time. And the ride always resets for the next rider

It is important to properly define "persistence" as it is an overused term within gaming. When building a game universe to take advantage of the social dynamics within 2021 and on, I mean world persistence. Specifically, I don't mean a given server where people go on the same quests, nor do I mean leveling up your character over time and building that identity. Just as our world does, the digital worlds that encompass a game universe, live and die, survive and thrive, at the whims of its players and agents, aided by the game/network developer. The world in which each user plays their role constantly changes, and thus, can effectively move on without any given user.

This isn't a novel concept. There have been examples of this in the past with open-world game such as EVE Online, special modded servers for games like Neverwinter Nights 2, as well as more quest driven games like World of Warcraft, however there is still much to be desired, including a lack of truly persistent world.

So, why hasn't this continually requested future arrived? First, let’s talk about technology.
The ask today feels more materially important as we've seen a confluence of factors on the technical infrastructure side make this type of scale and depth more achievable than even just a few years ago. In addition, in a world where our persistent world was in some way abruptly taken from us, it is only natural to want to recreate a dynamic that is similar, but with faster feedback loops and more vastness, from the comfort of our homes.
It is non-trivial to instance tens, let alone hundreds of players into an environment, with low-latency. Even today, Fortnite builds game mechanics in order to whittle down their players in a given game over time. The game starts with 100 players, creating material numbers of assets (builds) across a large, not fully-rendered at once environment, and then progresses to a smaller circle with far fewer players, all rendered at once. When game behavior doesn't naturally kill off as many players as Epic thought, they see considerable lag (mostly in competitive/pro formats).

The closest game in which I’ve seen progress on this is GTA Online due to some core innovations on both the RAGE engine by Rockstar, as well as their ability to build vast worlds and economies that have interactions across all players and NPC categories. With that said, GTA Online creates peer to peer instances with between 16-30 players max depending on console.
The cost and R&D required to build infrastructure to support these types of environments and interactions is incredibly high, which is a great argument as to why no startup will be the company that figures out this problem of persistence, but instead it will be born from the studios that own a proprietary engine (like Rockstar, Blizzard, Epic, and others), modifying it and making sacrifices first in order to break through the historical technical limitations. At a high level, we are seeing technology that can enable this specific use-case, ranging from cloud technologies to reach scalable instancing of a given world to breakthroughs in AI-driven Non Playable Characters (NPCs) or Agents, to more compelling ability to procedurally generate worlds, all the way to ML-driven asset creation.
Outside of pure technical limitations, the idea of building a truly persistent world is materially complex from a creative side too, and pulls on various tensions within game and world development broadly.
SOCIAL NETWORKS & PERSISTENT WORLDS: A SHIFT OF METRICS AND SYSTEMS CREATION
Instead of constantly working on new content, developers can focus on creating engaging, rich systems for players to interact with, creating their own emergent fun and meaning.
Thinking spatially: persistent worlds, Improbable
Improbable, with its SpatialOS, is one of the most well-funded players taking aim at these tensions (coherence.io is another player) and sums it up perfectly in the post above. While persistent worlds historically have enabled shared common space and continuous playing, they have underwhelmed on long-term creation of shared experiences.
Often game developers have a strong creative view on how to build stories, quests, and other creative dynamics within a game so that the player has a meaningful and enjoyable experience. This leads to a multitude of constraints that are put on these developers to create content. As games have moved into Games as a Service models, this tension is only more intensely felt as development shifts towards continuous deployment, and expectations continue to rise over time.
Social networks on the other hand have long understood that as your network reaches escape velocity, the only way to properly scale is to enable some form of UGC so that the network does the work for you. Thus, instead you must massage the loops around these various stakeholders of a network to enable more creation and reward for created content. The novelty problem is well understood as social networks have become more advanced in understanding their metrics to related to active users & retention, as well as usage, among other engagement metrics.
These metrics are partially driven by business model differences with games, where Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) could often sit at a singular chunk of a purchase that would function much more similar to the film industry today (which is undergoing its own business model shifts thanks to OTT platforms bringing a similar Entertainment as a Service model).

However, due to the notable shifts in continuous spending that has infiltrated games, and ARPU scaling up to instead mirror lifetime value (LTV) equations versus a one-time purchase equation, game developers too need to converge on metrics and thus, game dynamics, to optimize those behaviors and metrics that social networks have long-well understood.
Network effects is an interesting vector to think about related to this. What all networks understand at their core is the power of network effects as a core moat. While network effects have always been true for online games, very few games have material network effects that create the similar unbounded upside that social networks do. Rather, the network effects within games, i would argue, sit within micro-communities (do some of your friends play this game?) as well as outside of the game (is there a robust competitive ecosystem? Do streamers play this game?).
I'd still argue that these effects are far less material, as is shown in the replacement rate that games have versus social networks. All of this again, is a problem of scale and instancing but the concept of persistence introduces a new kind of scale of network effect.

With regards to social networks, we also can start thinking about retention within games. Specifically, re-engagement mechanisms are tried and true across both mobile games and social networks. As the world continues to change over time without you, there is a natural pull to return (this is where you begin to differentiate from Animal Crossing), out of FOMO. Due to the cross-platform nature of games today, as well as the connectivity we have relative to prior years when games like Neverwinter Nights were doing this on a small scale, we can re-engage users across multiple touch points and devices who opt-in to tracking what is going on in their worlds. Notably, IBM envisioned this with a patent they filed back in 2006, that was granted eight years later in 2014.
Because of this confluence of factors, it's likely that within a persistent world you must think about scale and how to enable large UGC to truly let the world rise and fall on its own. Many complain about persistence in this regard, but Improbable (not surprisingly) takes a view that meaningful persistence benefits the studios as your job shifts from content creation to system creation (Improbable has since largely become a studio on its own).

Roblox has hit on this in some regards and clearly understands the need to juice not only this model, but also the incentive mechanisms surrounding this model. As the company has risen over the past few years, the comms team at Roblox has been very careful to continue to tout not their revenue numbers, but instead the amount they've made for Roblox Creators.
While there are countless other examples to walk through related to this concept of where UGC can extend within the broader game ecosystem (GTA Online's UGC of role-playing is a fascinating corner of the internet) the core insight here is that game developers must be willing to take the gamble that many have made and been disappointed by in the past; allowing humans to utilize your system to in a relatively unconstrained way, build in your sandbox. The difference this time, is that those changes are permanent and send reverberations across the entire user base in a given world.

The aim of my research project is the merger of melodic and percussion elements resulting into one conglomeration. Drum sets become more tonal without loosing their characteristic noise-like sound. The ambition is to create entirely new sounds and complex forms driven by beat sequences which can be played via claviature.
During my scientific doctoral thesis I was driven by a passion to discover something new and to increase the understanding of complex molecular networks. In life sciences, hypothesis often have to be modified due to functional complexity of living things. Experimental results may disprove theoretical assumptions—a novel, surprising thought can appear! My curiosity and excitement of organic/natural complexity as a scientist also emerge as a musician when I perform sound studies.

• What are your inspiration sources?
That's really different. Sometimes I come up with new ideas while on holiday and sometimes on the train to work. Most of the time it’s about: How does it sound when I do this and that or change it?
I always benefit from my scientific approach to problems and their solutions.
At the moment, as already mentioned, I am busy with sounds that combine both tonally and tonelessly. In other words, all sounds should contain both characteristics.
I am also interested in the sound as something organic, living and changing.
In the real world, I am particularly inspired by percussion music from Africa and the South Seas. I find such complex rhythms really exciting. In addition, the percussion instruments also sound great and have this tone/toneless character, with which the musicians conjure very skillfully very sensitive melodies. Great!
I transpose this inspiration into the digital world and add to it the many possibilities that come into my mind—keywords: sequencing in sound and synthesis techniques.
• Tell us something about your workflow.
I’m building some instruments or sequencers in Kyma. Then I’ll learn to play them. I might notice one or two things that I would like to change or add to the instruments or sequencer. That's pretty much the short version of what I'm doing.
• How would creative rituals benefit your workflow?
I think that structured work is extremely important.
I mean by who you find out when you're the most creative in the day, then you should set up your main working time at that exact moment. Furthermore, I have noticed that distance or a break can also give a creative boost to your work. For example, just when I'm not sitting at the computer, important ideas come to me that I didn’t have before while working at the track.
• How do you get in the zone?
I don’t like constraints. A carefree train of thought that is not under pressure is the best. That’s exactly what I try to achieve with breaks, for example.
• How do you start a track?
I start with a rhythm that I like and then the whole thing is complemented with suitable sounds.
• Do you have a special template?
Yeah. My setup (see screenshot) is my template when I generate sounds. The individual instruments contain some synthesis techniques, which I can use not all at the same time but in combination. The mix is then mixed in Ableton, where I can record everything.
• What do you put on the master channel?
A dynamic EQ only.
• How do you arrange and finish a track?
At the moment I’m just recording my live session in the studio and leaving it at that. This means that the result corresponds to the recording.
• How do you deal with unfinished projects?
I take that as an inspiration for new pieces/projects.
• How do you store and organize your projects?
I can save the basic settings in my setup (top left of the screenshot) which can then be used for live improvisation.
With OSC commands I can then use Lemur-App to switch between the basic settings. In Lemur I built my remote control for the sequencer. Lemur is simply great when you need an individual controller.
• How do you take care of studio ergonomics?
As a live-orientated musician or sound arranger I make sure that my controllers (two iPads) are right in front of me. Exactly the same goes for my small Korg Nanokontrol, which allows me to adjust some volume levels.
In addition, I always try to sit in the optimal listening position (sweet spot). : )
• Tell us something about your daily routine, how is your day structured, how do you make room for creativity?
I have a part-time job so that I can have free days for the music. That’s where it starts tomorrow, because I am most creative in the morning. Then I take a little break and in the evening we continue. The important thing is to feel comfortable.
• Share a quick producing tip.
If a sound or sequence feels right the first time it is heard, it doesn’t change much. That means there’s already something there.

There are a few things about cloud gaming apps that seem at odds with some of the App Store’s rules, yet these rules are, of course, just guidelines written by Apple.  For Apple’s part, they basically said (full statement later) that the App Store had curators for a reason and that approving apps like these means they can’t individually review the apps which compromises the App Store experience.
To say that’s “the reason” seems disingenuous because the company has long approved platforms to operate on the App Store without stamping approval on the individual pieces of content that can be accessed. With “Games” representing the App Store’s most popular category, Apple likely cares much more about keeping their own money straight.
Analysis from CNBC pinned Apple’s 2019 App Store total revenue at $50 billion.
When these cloud gaming platforms like xCloud scale with zero iOS support, millions of Apple customers, myself included, are actually going to be pissed that their iPhone can’t do something that their friend’s phone can. Playing console-class titles on the iPhone would be a substantial feature upgrade for consumers. There are about 90 million Xbox Live users out there, a substantial number of which are iPhone owners I would imagine. The games industry is steadily rallying around game subscription networks and cloud gaming as a move to encourage consumers to sample more titles and discover more indie hits.
I’ve seen enough of these sagas to realize that sometimes parties will kick off these fights purely as a tactic to get their way in negotiations and avoid workarounds, but it’s a tactic that really only works when consumers have a reason to care. Most of the bigger App Store developer spats have played in the background and come to light later, but at this point the Xbox team undoubtedly sees that Apple isn’t positioned all that well to wage an App Store war in the midst of increased antitrust attention over a cause that seems wholly focused on maintaining their edge in monetizing the games consumers play on Apple screens.
CEO Tim Cook spent an awful lot of time in his Congressional Zoom room answering question about perceived anticompetitiveness on the company’s application storefront.
The big point of tension I could see happening behind closed doors is that plenty of these titles offer in-game transactions and just because that in-app purchase framework is being live-streamed from a cloud computer doesn’t mean that a user isn’t still using experiencing that content on an Apple device. I’m not sure whether this is actually the point of contention, but it seems like it would be a major threat to Apple’s ecosystem-wide in-app purchase raking.
The App Store does not currently support cloud gaming on Nvidia’s GeForce platform or Google’s Stadia which are also both available on Android phones. Both of these platforms are more limited in scope than Microsoft’s offering which is expected to launch with wider support and pick up wider adoption.
While I can understand Apple’s desire to not have gaming titles ship that might not function properly on an iPhone because of system constraints, that argument doesn’t apply so well to the cloud gaming world where apps are translating button presses to the cloud and the cloud is sending them back the next engine-rendered frames of their game. Apple is being forced to get pretty particular about what media types of apps fall under the “reader” designation. The inherent interactivity of a cloud gaming platform seems to be the differentiation Apple is pushing here — as well as the interfaces that allows gamers to directly launch titles with an interface that’s far more specialized than some generic remote desktop app.
All of these platforms arrive after the company already launched Apple Arcade, a non-cloud gaming product made in the image of what Apple would like to think are the values it fosters in the gaming world: family friendly indie titles with no intrusive ads, no bothersome micro-transactions and Apple’s watchful review.
Apple’s driver’s seat position in the gaming world has been far from a wholly positive influence for the industry. Apple has acted as a gatekeeper, but the fact is plenty of the “innovations” pushed through as a result of App Store policies have been great for Apple but questionable for the development of a gamer-friendly games industry.
Apple facilitated the advent of free-to-play games by pushing in-app purchases which have been abused recklessly over the years as studios have been irresistibly pushed to structure their titles around principles of addiction.
